Just a year ago, I assumed the role of President at Mount Saint Joseph Academy. The 2020-21 school year unfolded in the midst of a world still gripped in a pandemic and struggling with racial and political unrest. Nothing was business as usual. In this unprecedented year, the words of the familiar Mount motto spes messis in semine became the guiding wisdom for the year. If the hope of the harvest is in the seed, the seed must be broken open in order to grow. It was clear that a year of great growth was ahead for us as a community as well as individuals. We would not only survive, but thrive as we grew.

Despite COVID-19, the 2020-21 school year opened with a hybrid learning schedule. Students attended school in purple and gold cohorts while teachers mastered teaching in person and virtually with the assistance of OWL cameras. The annual fall musical successfully debuted in the spring, while Acadram and the Winter and Spring Concerts took on a virtual platform to display their talents. Students pressed on to successfully publish the Muse, the Campanile, and the Sheaf. We featured a tremendous show of artistic talent during Fine Arts Week. Fall, winter, and spring sports took place with extraordinary resilience on the part of our student athletes. Even though mostly masked in their competitions, individuals and teams distinguished themselves in their sport. The lacrosse team qualified for states for the first time in program history, and several track and field athletes set new school records.

Throughout the year, the Mount community began to take steps to engage the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Faculty, staff, and students participated in opportunities to raise cultural awareness and to dismantle racism. Alumnae, colleagues, consultants, and students have been helpful resources. While we have only just begun this journey, we are committed to the ongoing work that is needed.

The Class of 2021 brought the year to a close with a tremendous harvest. They applied to 208 colleges, were accepted to 167, and were awarded scholarships that amounted to $26,622,988! Now, they are moving into the classroom of the world, where they will share the fruits of their education. Our newest alumnae must be courageous in leaving their mentors and teachers to take what they have learned and become agents of transformation in our world. These young women have endured the pandemic through the end of their junior year as well as their entire senior year. They have not only survived, but they have grown as they were toughened to just the right degree to be strong to carry the fruit that they will bear.

We also recognize the gifts of Dr. Judith Caviston as she retires from the position of Principal after 11 fruitful years. We welcome Mrs. Elizabeth Blessing as she offers her unique talents and experience as the 21st Principal of the Mount.

Like the seed, the heart is prone to deliver its harvest in the same moment that it appears to be crushed. While the worries and anxieties of this past year were unlike anything most of us have ever experienced, we engaged our reality and were formed in ways that we could not possibly imagine. Despite discouragement and sometimes despair, God’s abiding love, care, and providence sustained us. As we look back at this past year with gratitude for the lessons learned and the new growth sustained, the Mount community is testimony that the hope of the harvest is in the seed. Let us look forward with great hope and trust that we might be faithful to all that we have harvested this year.

Letter from
President

Mrs.

Principal of Mount Saint Joseph Academy

We are delighted to announce that Mrs. Elizabeth Blessing will serve as the 21st Principal of Mount Saint Joseph Academy. She assumed the role as of July 1, 2021.

Mrs. Blessing brings to the Mount her commitment to the mission and vision of the Sisters of Saint Joseph springing from her Jesuit roots. Seeing herself called to the ministry of Catholic secondary education, she is student-centered and works to foster the engagement of faculty, staff, and parents in this ministry. Mrs. Blessing espouses her passion for academic excellence within the context of single sex education.

Mrs. Blessing, who is bilingual, comes to the Mount with the breadth of her local, national, and international background. She completed her undergraduate studies at Fordham University with a major in Spanish and minor in philosophy and business administration. For her graduate degree in education from Harvard University, Mrs. Blessing specialized in instructional leadership and serving diverse learners. She taught Spanish at two Jesuit high schools (Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. and Boston College High School in Boston). Additionally, Mrs. Blessing has had teaching and administrative experience at the Singapore American School, Singapore as well as the Boston Cristo Rey School. Most recently, Mrs. Blessing has come with her husband to Philadelphia and engaged in professional development coaching here with teachers and administrators in three Catholic high schools.

As a visionary educator, Mrs. Blessing stands on the shoulders of her predecessors while inviting all in our school community to achieve their best, meeting the future with competence and with confidence in God’s grace.

On The Mount

1Several students participated in the virtual Montgomery County Academic Bowl in March. Congratulations to the following students. On the senior team were Claire Hanycz and Selina Sithya. Representing the junior team were Christianna Johnsson, Olivia Forti, Sonia Marhefka, and Lauren Quirk 2

Junior Ring Mass is an annual tradition in which students receive their class rings. It represents the juniors’ shift from underclasswomen to mature young adults as they prepare to enter their senior year. The Mount class ring symbolizes a student’s accomplishments, experiences, hard work, and knowledge that will carry her through life, and serves as a reminder that she will always be a vital part of the Mount sisterhood. 3

Nydia Han, 6ABC Consumer Investigative Reporter and co-anchor of Action News Sunday mornings, and Pamela Hunt Gwaltney ’79, Deputy Director of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations, were keynote speakers in a virtual event on April 19 with the student body, faculty, and staff. They discussed the recent wave of violence targeting the Asian American Pacific Islander community across America. Han opened the event by sharing her experience as a victim of racially-targeted harassment, and shared ways students can be allies to the AAPI community, and Gwaltney provided guidance on what an individual can do if they witness a hate crime. The Mount wishes to extend gratitude to the speakers and those who helped plan this event, including Jennifer Lin ’76. 4

MagicTHON was held outdoors in April to benefit Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Students dressed up and had a nine-hour dance marathon and an afternoon of fun. They raised a whopping $102,890.19 for CHOP. Way to go, girls!

to Head Crew Coach Megan Kennedy ’92, who received the Joseph F. Brennan Memorial Coach Award in May. This lifetime achievement award is given to a rowing coach for outstanding dedication to the development of young rowers. The award was created to honor coaches in the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association and the Schuylkill River rowing community who have dedicated themselves to years of service to the sport. Each year the winner is chosen by a group of former coaches and officials in the Schuylkill Navy Community. The award is named after Joseph Brennan, a longtime oarsman and former coach at the Mount.

On May 27, the Academy held a commitment ceremony honoring Class of 2021 scholar-athletes who have signed on to play a sport in college. Congratulations to these students on continuing a successful high school athletic career in college!

Congratulations

to Emily Baer

Valedictorian, Class of 2021

The enigmatic author Kurt Vonnegut once said, “We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.” Of course, this quote is not meant to be taken literally— one should not spontaneously partake in activities such as cliff jumping, as doing so would be reckless and highly dangerous. However, when understood figuratively, these words contain a wealth of truth and wisdom. Some of the most prominent figures in history have taken risks and problem solved along the way to reach their fullest potential and change the world.

Exactly like those before us, we, too, must enter the “great unknown” to grow and progress, to find our wings.

At one point or another, each of us here today has had to take a risk and embark on a journey of an unknown outcome. Maybe that risk was applying to and attending the Mount, without knowing a single student. Maybe it was auditioning for the school musical or trying out for an athletic team. It could have been opening up to a group of classmates on our senior retreat or sending an application to a dream college. Many times, our attempts at something new were successful. Other times, the outcomes may not have been exactly what we had hoped, yet we have all survived.

Regardless of the risks we took or the results of our attempts, we have become the magnificent women we are today because of them. By attending the Mount, we have made friends who will last a lifetime and have gained an invaluable education. From participating in athletics, the arts, or robotics, we have become stronger, more creative, and more innovative. By being vulnerable with our classmates, we have connected in deep and meaningful ways. After spending months applying to various colleges, we have put ourselves on track to continue our education at institutions where we believe we will truly thrive and belong.

In our lives thus far, entering the “great unknown” or “jumping off a cliff” has been unintentional or unplanned. In March of 2020, we were forced to isolate ourselves as a result of COVID-19, a pandemic that changed our remaining high school experience and likely the rest of our lives. We all entered the pandemic uncertain of and probably unprepared for the challenges it would bring. Throughout this time, some of us have struggled with our physical and mental health, and others have lost loved ones to the virus. All of us have acclimated to a new level of unpredictability and unconventionality, a “new normal.”

Despite all the challenges we have faced, everyone here has grown from the collective experience of the pandemic. We have found new ways to connect and communicate with one another remotely, and we have adapted to learning virtually in new environments. Most importantly, each of us has gained a greater appreciation for our family, friends, and the value of time spent together. If COVID-19 has taught us anything, it is that we are an extremely resilient group of women, and we are all capable of “developing our wings.”

After looking back at everything we have achieved and every challenge we have overcome, we can and will accomplish much more in the future ahead. We are going to college to continue finding ourselves, to have new and exciting experiences, and to study the passions we hope to pursue. In what may seem like the “blink of an eye,” we will become doctors and teachers, lawyers and engineers. When we look to the future, we must promise ourselves that we will continue to take risks and “jump off” the metaphorical cliffs, which edge unknown territory. Each of us has the potential to change our world, whether through making a groundbreaking scientific discovery, repairing society’s injustices, or educating future generations. To accomplish these feats, we must recognize the risks we need to take, as well as the obstacles and opposition we will face. When we finally meet the inevitable challenges to our success, we must remember that we have been more than adequately prepared to overcome them by those who have helped us reach this very moment.

God, our creator and benevolent, omnipotent Father, has put each of us here on this Earth for a unique purpose. He provides us with the tools and strength to fulfill that purpose, and for these, we must be eternally grateful. Our families and our parents have been by our sides from our very beginning, and we owe a great deal of our success to their sacrifices and support.

Of course, we must thank the teachers and administrators of Mount Saint Joseph Academy for guiding us throughout our tumultuous yet transformative high school experience. During the past four years, they have instilled in us the importance of being women of “courage, conviction, and compassion” and have constantly reminded us of our institution-wide belief that “on the education of women largely depends the future of society.”

Finally, we must remember to show gratitude toward one another. As individuals, we have had the drive, determination, and stamina to reach this momentous conclusion to our high school journey. As the Class of 2021, we have pushed one another to accomplish far more than we could have imagined as freshmen, and we have encouraged and empowered one another every step of the way.

As we move on to the next stage of our lives, let us never forget how strong, bold, and capable we truly are. As we continue the lifelong venture of taking risks and “jumping off cliffs,” let us never forget that we possess everything we need to develop our wings— the wings which will allow us to fulfill our potential and make a lasting difference in our world. Thank you.

2021 Fournier Medal Recipient:

Mother Saint John Fournier, the founder of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, was a woman of high ideals, courage, and commitment. The Fournier Medal is awarded each year at commencement to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of Mother Saint John through distinguished service and loyalty to the Mount. This year’s Fournier Medal was awarded to Ann Marie Von Hacht Horner ’69.

Ann Marie joined the Board of Directors in 2015 and served as Chairwoman of the Board from 2018 through 2021. Her tenure on the Board included many challenges, including the death of S. Kathleen Brabson, SSJ, former President of the Mount, the search for a new President, and the Academy’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

She serves as a Class Agent and was instrumental in the success of her class’s 50th Reunion. Along with her husband, Terry, she has generously supported students through The Horner Family Foundation Award, which is given annu ally to two juniors, to be applied toward their senior year tuition.

As an alumna and in her role on the Board, she exhibited qualities that the Academy strives to instill in students: leadership, vision, determination, and compassion.

President’s Reception for the Class of 2025

Sister Charlene Diorka, SSJ (President) and the administration welcomed scholars and awardees in the Class of 2025 and their families to the Mount on May 6 for the President’s Reception. The ceremony celebrated their achievements, and students who received scholarships, grants, and other awards were recognized. We look forward to welcoming the entire Class of 2025 at the start of the 2021-22 school year!

PARENTS ASSOCIATION

What a year it has been! Events definitely looked different but we were able to host a full calendar of celebrations. COVID didn’t stop the Parents Association! Below is a recap of the 2020-2021 school year.

The school year began with incoming first-year students receiving handwritten notes welcoming them to The Mount. Traditionally given in their junior year, seniors received their class rings in September during the first-ever Senior Ring Mass. First-year students were treated to sweets and a takeaway gift in place of the traditional Freshman Tea. The Honors Convocations, held separately for seniors and juniors, whose event was cancelled the previous spring due to lockdown, ended with individually packaged treats and giveaways for all. In lieu of the traditional December ceremony, the socially distant Senior Tree Trimming allowed seniors to pick up their personalized Christmas ornaments and sweets. We certainly missed the annual Christmas celebration for faculty and staff, but were happy to offer them to-go sweets and spirits to celebrate the holidays with their families.

Through the service project Caring for Friends (formerly Aid for Friends), volunteers were able to prepare and distribute breakfast bags. Juniors received their class rings in March and were presented with ring holders bearing the Mount logo. This year we added Spirit Bags to celebrate the last 100 days of school for our seniors in February, March, April, and May. The Mount Magic Picnic was held in person in May. Luckily, we had a beautiful day outdoors! Pre-packaged food items were offered to both incoming first-year students as well as current first-year students who did not have their picnic last year. Several volunteers took to the road to surprise senior families with a lawn sign congratulating the Class of 2021. The end of the academic year brought us lifted COVID capacity restrictions, and we celebrated Senior Recognition Night with the entire class and family members gathered together. The evening ended with cupcakes, allergy-friendly treats, and balloons decorating the gym. Onto next year! The 2021-2022 school year will be here shortly. Please think about getting involved at school. An hour makes a difference! Contact us to sign up for one of the many events the Parents Association is involved with. Thank you in advance for your time and efforts!

Harvest Club Dinner

Parents, alumnae, members of the Board of Directors, and friends gathered to celebrate the annual Harvest Club Dinner. The evening honored individuals who gave to the Mount Fund at the Purple & Gold or Harvest Club levels, and who volunteered their time and efforts to the Mount during the 2020-2021 school year.

24 Summer 2021

With immense gratitude, Mount Saint Joseph Academy thanks our donors who helped the Mount Fund reach more than $515,000 in support. The generosity of the Mount community helped assist the current highest need: merit and need-based scholarship, as well as other student financial assistance.

We invite all members of our community –alumnae, current parents, past parents, faculty, staff, and friends – to renew or initiate your support to the Mount Fund this year. By making a gift to the Mount Fund, you are providing the opportunity for young women to experience the rigorous academic programs, which challenge students to shape the future.

Thank you!

letter

from

the Alumnae Board President

It is an honor and a privilege to be writing this first letter as new President of the Alumnae Board. As the oldest of four sisters to attend The Mount, this has been a special place for my family for more than 20 years. The days I spent in the hallways of the school, in the music room, and on the river prepared me for college and for life in ways I never could have thought possible.

While I always stayed connected with The Mount in one way or another, the past two years as the Chair of the inaugural Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee on the Alumnae Board reignited my passion to further the mission of the school through service, education, training, and community.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the tremendous challenges that the past year and a half presented in the face of a pandemic, a long overdue spotlight on racial and social injustice, and the political divide in our nation. For me, it caused me to pause and reflect on what is important and what I believe in, and just how much we all need each other. And it was no surprise to me that the students, alumnae, faculty, and staff rose to every occasion to keep everyone healthy, safe, and connected in the most unprecedented pivot in education in modern times.

Even though we were apart, the Alumnae Board managed to conduct virtual programming, education, and training with more than 264 alums attending from all around the country. But we know that with thousands of alumnae, we have work to do to reengage with those who have lost touch – for we are at our best when all alumnae are represented. We have discovered that many of our outreach initiatives are one-way: Mount Magazine, e-mails, and print mailers. In order to learn and grow together, we need to engage alumnae through two-way communication. Call us, write to us, tag us, join a virtual seminar. There are so many ways to interact with the Mount, tailored to make everyone feel safe and welcome. We look forward to resuming in-person activities and events fully this year.

If you are already an active alum, I would invite you to encourage two to three fellow classmates to participate alongside you. Your feedback on various programs affects the current students and helps us create the best possible environment for students and alumnae to thrive. We take all of this information to heart as we craft our vision for the upcoming year. We love seeing new faces, hearing your news, and seeing your photos.

It has been a challenging year that made many of us look outward for the physical connection we were lacking. Our communities are vital to our well-being. You are a vital part of the Mount community. Let us use what we have learned this year to reach out to our dear neighbor and to reconnect and reinvigorate our Mount community.

Along with Emily DePaul ’01 (Vice President) and Tara Hank ’12 (Secretary) and two dozen other talented and passionate Mounties, the Alumnae Board is here to serve you and support you in your days beyond the Mount. Spes Messis in Semine.
