From the Editor Greetings from the Mount! Summer has finally arrived! You would think the hallways would be a bit quieter without our girls, but it is much louder. The sounds of drills and sledgehammers echo through the hallways as renovations are underway to revitalize our science wing. We are looking forward to the finished product as much as our girls are! There are many students who have discovered their passions while attending the Mount. They will become the next generation of great writers, chemical engineers, lawyers and so much more. In this issue you will read about Meaghan Kiernan ’13 who hopes to become a veterinarian. Her enthusiasm for the sciences began when she took her first science class at the Mount. You will also read about a faculty member who inspired many of his students to pursue a career in the sciences. Mr. Bob Foell, who has spent the past 17 years teaching at the Mount, will be retiring this month. Mr. Foell’s journey is an interesting one. His story reminds us that sometimes our path isn’t always a straight line to our desired goals, but if we are open to opportunities we will arrive in places we least expect. Lastly, you will find a story about alumna Nikki West ’87. Nikki has used the skills she learned at the Mount to become a successful Principal at Lower Gwynedd Elementary School. The experiences that our girls have at the Mount shape them into young women who are empowered, compassionate, spiritual, and innovative. In this issue you will find highlights from the Class of 2013’s graduation. We congratulate our graduates on a successful and wonderful four years and we wish

them all the best in their new endeavors. We hope that you enjoy this issue of The Mount Magazine and welcome you to share your thoughts with us. Please send your letters and feedback to mount@msjacad.org. Go Mount! -Maryellen Anastasio Managing Editor & Director of Communications

Summer 2013

From the President

Dear Friends, In my remarks to the Class of 2013, I invited them to reflect on the words in our 21st century mission statement: “Faithful to ‘educating founders,’ Mount Saint Joseph Academy enables students to be agents of transformation in the face of moral and ethical challenges in an ever-evolving society.” While I believe every line of our mission statement is important, I think this phrase is particularly significant for the Class of 2013, because it is a direct and clear mandate to choose greatness. Please join me in congratulating the Class of 2013, as women who, in four years, had the opportunities to make conscious choices to shape their future and to focus on living greater, the magis. These are women who made unselfish choices for the dear neighbor. They are women who demonstrated their potential to choose greatness. Through their Unitas retreat, these women break out of their comfort zones and begin to deepen their relationship with God and one another. They are women who distinguished themselves academically by proving they possess the intellects needed to engage in deeper learning, and are capable of critical thinking. The 21st century is calling them to be global citizens and to accept the challenge of living differently. The Class of 2013 is ready to build a future of peace and justice in our world! These women established excellence in the athletic arena by stretching and strengthening their bodies to achieve on whatever playing field, court, or river they faced. They brought us to state, district, and local competitions. They recognized the importance of physical fitness in their pursuit of becoming a whole person. They are women who raised the quality of our experience in the fine arts by their performances, writing, and challenging debates. They enhanced our vision of what this world can be when it pauses to play and learn through the arts. In conclusion, let me restate the great pride I feel for the Class of 2013, and for the gifts they brought to this Mount community. We are better because of their talents, generosity, and example. They have lived our mission and now they must advance this mission in the world of college and beyond. I asked them to accept the clear and direct mandate of becoming agents of transformation that will found a future full of hope! I have no doubt they will, so please join me, in wishing them the best. Congratulations to the Class of 2013! All the best,

Sister Kathleen Brabson, SSJ President

Over Easter break, 40 Mounties along with six chaperones set off on a trip of a lifetime. ‘Buongiorno Italia’ started in Verona, Italy, and ended in Rome offering amazing experiences along the way. In Verona, students saw the setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Continuing on to Venice, they were able to gain appreciation for its unique beauty by riding along the Grand Canal passing gondoliers and colorful facades. The group then traveled south to Florence to beautiful Tuscany. In Florence they visited the Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio and encountered many other memorable sites. Upon departing Tuscany, they arrived in the quaint town of Assisi where they visited the Basilica of St. Francis, home to Giotto’s famous frescoes. Later, they experienced a gelato factory where Mounties took part in the making of gelato followed by a group tasting of the various flavors. Their journey then took them to the Bay of Naples where they visited Pompeii. Students were fascinated to see a city that was perfectly preserved when the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius had covered it in ash in 79 A.D. The next stop was the beautiful seaside town of Sorrento where they shopped in tiny artisan stores that lined the square. They visited the mountainous island of Capri where many Mounties and chaperones climbed their way to the top to enjoy spectacular views of the sea. It was on to Rome for their final days of the trip. They visited the Vatican Museum, including the Sistine Chapel. After touring the Colosseum and the Forum they

enjoyed a final evening in the lively area surrounding the Piazza Navona. Pictured Right (l-r): Hannah Keller ’13, Sarah Troy ’13 and Jamie Gallagher ’13. 4

The Mount Saint Joseph Academy robotics team, the Firebirds, won the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship Chairman’s Award for the seventh consecutive year. ARTS

8 Acadram’s 2013 production of Denise Deegan’s Daisy Pulls It Off parodied a British boarding school novel of the 1920s. Though the play is set in another country and time period, it clearly parallels the Mount experience with its high-achieving scholarship student Daisy Meredith. The cast and audience were able to easily connect with the exuberance, passions, and enthusiasm of the Grangewood girls. Produced and directed by Ms. Jean Korey, the show ran in March. Gina Nicoletti ’13 and Morgan Digney ’13 stage-managed the show. The 13-member cast featured, Grace Lynch ’13, Devin McGrath ’13 and Cassidy Peikin ’13. Christine Sedlack ’15 played Daisy. After losing five starters from the 2012 season, the Mount was ready to make an impact in the Catholic Academy League. This year’s team was highly adaptable and hard working. The Mount gained momentum with each win and overpowered top teams in the league. Their biggest win was at Merion Mercy Academy, the team rallied after a 0-3 start to win 16-13. This was the first time since 2008 that the Mount beat Merion Mercy. The Mount was seeded 11th in District play and dominated the first round of play. The Mount loses seven seniors, but with feisty and skilled underclassmen next year’s season looks to be a successful one!

veryone’s journey through life is different, and that journey often takes us to places we least expect. Mr. Bob Foell’s path took him to places he would have never imagined. One of those places was Mount Saint Joseph Academy. After 17 years of service to the Mount as a science teacher, Mr. Foell has decided to hang up his lab coat and embrace retirement. Though making the decision to retire wasn’t an easy one, he knew the timing was right. Throughout Mr. Foell’s life, timing has been pivotal. His arrival at the Mount in 1996 was the result of a series of personal decisions that led in many directions and makes for an interesting story. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1967 with a degree in Zoology. Shortly after graduation, he was hired as a science teacher in the Centennial School District of Eastern Pennsylvania. He taught Physics, Biology, Environmental Science and other science classes to hundreds of students in the public school system. After eighteen and a half rewarding years of teaching he was certain it was time for a change . . . a big change! Mr. Foell hopped in the drivers’ seat of an 18-wheeler and opened his very own trucking business. “I enjoy driving and traveling,” he said. “It was a great opportunity for me to travel across the country and see the United States.” During the five years he ran his trucking company Mr. Foell continually felt the pull from his first calling as a teacher. He couldn’t ignore it and began to apply for teaching jobs. “I thought I would go back to teaching science,” Mr. Foell said. He didn’t expect that the next leg of his journey would take him to a drug and alcohol facility for adolescents; again he was taking a leap into the unknown.

12

Summer 2013

“I taught eight to ten adolescents every morning,” Mr. Foell said. “The students were in all stages of education; some couldn’t read while others were studying French Literature.” Everyday he was faced with new challenges. Many of his students came from broken homes and abused drugs and alcohol to cope with anger, fear, and loneliness. He remembers struggling at times to connect with students, but when a co-teacher was hired, Foell learned from her example. “She had a mother-hen like quality about her,” he said. “It was like magic watching her work with the students. Her soft and accepting demeanor drew students in to listen and learn.” After six years of working together, she was involved in a fatal car accident and passed away. He knew that working at the facility wouldn’t be the same without her. He was again in search of a new beginning, but this time he had a better idea of what he wanted to do. “I had a desire to stay in education,” Mr. Foell said. “This time I was sure I wanted to start teaching science again.” Foell applied for science faculty openings at various schools in the Greater Philadelphia area, but nothing seemed to fit. One afternoon he received a phone call from a friend and from there things began to fall into place. “A good friend of mine was a teacher,” Mr. Foell said. “He had recently attended a meeting where Sister Karen Dietrich, SSJ, had mentioned an opening for a science teacher at the Mount.” He sent along his resume and was called in to interview. The process moved quickly and next thing he knew he was hired. During Mr. Foell’s time at the Mount, he has been a positive influence in his students’ lives. He attributes his

success in the classroom to his previous experiences. Though his students at the Mount are vastly different from those he taught at the drug and alcohol facility, his experience gave him the skills to be able to better identify when a student was struggling not only academically, but also emotionally. He learned the importance of understanding and teaching with compassion. “The students are extremely motivated here, but I have always kept an eye out for the students who seem down, or weren’t engaging with the material. I paid attention to how they were doing as individuals, and the Mount encourages concern for its students. It is a very warm community.” Since 2000, there has been an increased interest in the sciences for post-grad Mounties. Mr. Foell believes that it is due to the introduction of the Mount’s robotics program, The Firebirds. He spearheaded the program up until 2009 and continued to help with competitions over the years. “I am excited to watch the program continue to grow,” Mr. Foell said. “I am also looking forward to witnessing the science wing transform into a state-of-the-art facility where students can learn in up-to-date labs and perform hands on experiments in a safe environment.” Mr. Foell played a huge role in the planning and designing of the new science wing to be completed in late summer of this year. One of the most rewarding aspects of his job has been hearing from graduates who have pursued a career in the sciences. Recently, a former student emailed Mr. Foell and expressed her gratitude for his guidance while she attended the Mount. “It is nice to hear them say, ‘thanks for giving me the confidence to try engineering and for showing me how much fun it can be,” Mr. Foell said. He plans to spend retirement with his wife, their two children and their six grand children. His wife, Lois, also retired this year and they are planning to travel across America in the fall, once their grandchildren go back to school. Over the summer he has projects on his farm he is looking to complete, including finishing his barn and various other tasks he has been putting off. He plans to continue to spend time at the Mount, assisting with the Firebirds and subbing when needed. “It is bittersweet. I react slowly to things; I don’t think it will hit me that I have retired until September. Whatever happens in the future, I know I will land on my feet. I landed here, and this was a place I least expected, but it has been an incredible and rewarding experience.” Every journey has its twists and turns, but it also has people who inspire us along the way. Mr. Bob Foell has certainly inspired a generation of students with his passion for science. We wish him all the best in retirement! M

Farewell from Faculty & Students “Saying goodbye to Bob Foell is truly bittersweet. I will miss his wit, wisdom and charm. For over 17 years he has dedicated himself to our young women and to advancing their love for science. In the last ten years he has focused his attention on developing their engineering skills through our robotics program. He will be missed by many!“ -President Sister Kathleen Brabson, SSJ. “Bob is one of the smartest, wisest and most articulate people I’ve ever known. From my first day at the Mount he made me feel part of a team. One can’t ask more than that from a friend and colleague.” -Mr. Peter Alfonsi, Science Faculty “With his personal expertise in farming, sheep tending, bee keeping and truck driving, Mr. Foell has taught me many life lessons.” -Lauren Buben ’13 Quote Credit: Kaitlyn Loftus ’13 (Writer for The Campanile)

Class of 2013 Best In Class & Valedictorian Congratulations to Kaitlyn Marie Loftus who earned the BEST IN CLASS designation, awarded to the student who has earned the highest GPA as of January of her Senior year. Kaitlyn was also this year’s valedictorian.

“Both the first grader facing an inconceivable amount of learning ahead of her and the eighteen year old ready to step out of her kilt and into the real world are embarking on new, unprecedented phases of their lives. The difference in these transitions is the preparation. The Mount has enabled us to enter into the uncertainty with the capacity to be founders, to leave a lasting legacy, to embody the hope of the harvest.” -Kaitlyn Marie Loftus

Kent Roman

for Distinguished Service to Mount Saint Joseph Academy

The Mother Saint John Fournier Award is presented each year at graduation to a member of our community who has served the school with distinction and who has shown great commitment to the Academy. This year’s recipient, Kent Roman, has been a fixture at the school for many years. The proud father of three Mounties, Kerry ’06, Corin ’09 and Lisa ’13, Kent spent many days running from various meetings at the school to his daughters’ sporting events. His wife, Patti, also served as Parents Association President this year. Currently the Chair of the Board of Directors, Kent has been integral in the success of the recent Accreditation and the planning and implementation of the Founders in the Sciences Initiative. We are grateful for Kent’s commitment to the Mount!

Harvest Club 2013

A record number of Parents, Alumnae and friends of the Mount gathered in Fontbonne for the Harvest Club Dinner in May. The dinner honors those who have given to the Mount Fund at the Purple & Gold or Harvest Club levels, or who have volunteered their time at the Mount during the past school year. To make it even more special, members of the MSJA Culinary Club assisted Mount’s Executive Chef Dennis Littley in preparation and serving of the delicious fare.

Summer 2013

Dear Alumnae, As the 2013 school year comes to an end, so does my tenure as President of the Alumnae Association. As I reflect on the past four years, I am reminded of the words from a song in the Broadway show, Wicked. “I’ve heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason bringing something we must learn and we are led to those who help us most to grow if we let them and we help them in return…so much of me is made of what I learned from you, you’ ll be with me like a handprint on my heart…” At first, the thought of serving as President of the Alumnae Association took me out of my comfort zone of lace and pearls. I was following so many great presidents. How could I continue to carry on the “Mission of the Mount.” Yet as an alum, I embraced the challenge. With guidance from Sister Kathleen Brabson, the Alumnae Association was poised to take the next step. Thanks to Theresa Moyer’s innovative thinking and expertise, our Alumnae programs continue to be tremendously successful. The women of MSJA are truly amazing people. Your loyalty to the Mount has been an inspiration to me. Your dedication and support shines through and enables the legacy of Mount Saint Joseph Academy to continue for future generations. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve on the Alumnae Board. The association is grateful for the years of service from our outgoing Board members. Each of these women has contributed to the Mount in a meaningful way: Erin McClafferty Erfle ’96, Ellen Rosa-Bian Cericola ’82, Maria Fella Cain ’80, Lorraine Sukalski McGlynn ’52, Jeanine O’Brien Waldron ’92, Sheila Kropp McLaughlin ‘84, Charlene Keller Fullmer ‘89, Barbara Tumelty Kelly ‘00, Heather McKenna-Tausz ‘89 and Mollie O’Rourke Menapace ‘71. I am pleased to welcome the new officers and Alumnae Board members for the 2013-2015 term. They bring their enthusiasm, dedication and insight to continue the “Mission of the Mount.” President: Megan Osborne Romano ’94 Vice President: Meaghan P. Inspiring the next Generation: Nikki West ’87 by: Kelly Osborne Faust ’83

Jackie Robinson, a civil rights leader, is clearly known for breaking the Major League Baseball Barrier, yet his legacy is even more far-reaching. Jackie recognized the power of example and throughout his life, he applied his best effort to achieve the many goals set before him. Through his actions and philosophy, he demonstrated his leadership abilities and worked to make a positive impact. His work has inspired generations of leaders, one of which is Nicole West. Nikki West, Class of ’87, has dedicated her life to the education of children. Nikki learned the importance of education from her parents at an early age. They empowered Nikki, and her brother, Brett, to identify what they wanted to achieve in life and provided the structure and opportunities to help them reach their goals and fulfill their dreams. One of their goals for Nikki was to send her to Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Nikki’s mom, at the age of three, moved from Augusta, Georgia with Nikki’s grandparents. Mrs. West had a concept of education and knew that she wanted something better and different for her children. The guidance, personal sacrifice and hard work Mr. and Mrs. West invested in their children demonstrated to Nikki another visionary example of excellence and helped her become the leader that she is today. Reflecting on MSJA, Nikki recalled how this leadership academy instills in girls the desire to work hard. “The perseverance and confidence building help take you to the next level, whatever the next level is.” MSJA helped develop Nikki’s in-Jackie borne leadership skills and helped her feel that she could do anything. “We were provided the tools, skills, confidence and educational experiences to identify and pursue goals. We also learned how to navigate obstacles.” The friendships she created and nurtured helped further reaffirm her confidence. As Nikki’s classmate Debbie Reilly said, “Part of the bond of the Mount, that we often don’t realize until after we graduate, is that we know we can always count on our peers to be there.” After graduating from the Mount, Nikki attended LaSalle University and earned a dual certification in Elementary and Special Education. She went on to receive certifications from Chestnut Hill College ’97 and her Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania ’04. Of significance, Nikki graduated from Penn on May 17, 2004, the 50th Anniversary of Brown vs. The Board of

Nikki West at her 25th Reunion with Mr. and Mrs. Donohoe.

Education of Topeka, the landmark case that ended segregation. Nikki, the Principal at Lower Gwynedd Elementary School, is incredibly mindful of her position as a role model and every day works hard to inspire all of her students, especially the girls, with the motivation to work hard and give their best effort. She infuses the “YOU CAN” philosophy into her school and encourages her students to dream big and achieve their goals. The decisions she faces everyday, involving parents, teachers or students connect with the common goal of providing children the best education they can possibly receive. Thousands have benefitted from Nikki’s Robinson leadership and her legacy moves forward as three of her former students are teachers. Nikki remembers with appreciation the lessons learned from Sister Catherine John and Sister Marie Charlotte. She is deeply grateful for the wisdoms learned from Mrs. Mary Lou Donohoe. Nikki recalls how Mrs. Donohoe treated her like a member of her family. Not only did she teach Nikki how to write exceptionally well, she taught her perseverance, specifically how to be sensitive and strong at the same time. Mary Lou Donohoe’s impact and legacy, whether overseeing a classroom assignment or imparting a life lesson, perpetuates to this day for so many (author included). Nikki enjoys her role as a doting aunt to her brother Brett and wife Joy’s two children. She enjoys watching baseball and lives the philosophy of Jackie Robinson positively impacting others in any way she can. M

“A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

(l-r) Florence Narducci ’61 and sister Trish Zurgay Burkholder ’ 74 with their husbands.

The Rosemary McNally ’17 Alumnae Award is presented annually to an Alumna who has distinguished herself through consistent dedication and outstanding service to Mount Saint Joseph Academy. The recipient will have contributed to the welfare of the school and the Alumnae Association as well as have a record of contributing to the Mount Fund. This award has been named for Rosemary McNally ’17, a longtime friend and supporter of the Mount, whose commitment, service and dedication to the Academy serve as an example and inspiration to all Alumnae. The recipient of this year’s Rosemary McNally Award is Trish Zugay Burkholder ’74. Trish has dedicated her time, talent, treasures and energy to the Mount for many years. She has been an invaluable member of the Alumnae Board for the past eight years, serving as Board President for the last four years. She worked closely with the Parents’ Association on the annual mother/daughter fashion show. She was instrumental in the development of our Special Events Committee, serving as a vital member of this committee by volunteering at and attending countless events over the past five years. Trish served on her reunion committee, reaching out to classmates, urging their attendance and participation in the Mount Fund. You will find her at practically every event the Mount hosts – from the Golf Outing to Lunch with Santa to Celebrauction and Spring Fling! We are very grateful for her dedication to and passion for the Mount over the past 35 + years.

Hall of Fame Award Kate Groark Shields ’93

Kate Groak Shields pictured with her husband and three daughters.

The MSJA Hall of Fame was established to honor an Alumna who has exhibited service and loyalty to the Mount, who has made contributions to the Mount and whose efforts have made a difference in her community. The nominee should be a woman who has achieved a level of excellence in her profession or vocation while sharing the values of MSJA and its Alumnae Association, thereby serving as an example for all Alumnae and students of Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Kate Groark Shields ’93, pictured above with her beautiful family, is the 2013 recipient of the Hall of Fame Award. Since her graduation, Kate has kept the mission and vision of the Mount alive in her role as a wife, mother, business executive and volunteer. It is apparent that she has lived our motto, “the hope of the harvest is in the seed”. She has served as the Vice-President of the Mount Alumnae Association and currently serves on the Board at For Pete’s Sake. This honor is well deserved and fitting for a woman whose life’s work is about commitment and service to others.

This initiative is focused on exposing our current students to different career paths and opportunities in New York City. The Initiative will get underway next fall when our first group of seniors will visit the Big Apple. Kate hosted the committee along with S. Kathleen Brabson, Jill Gregori and Theresa Moyer in January at the Friar’s Club to finalize plans for the visit. Karen Mullane Bronster ’96 hosted a group of NY Mounties at her home in January. Over twenty alums attended to hear an update on happenings at the Mount given by President S. Kathleen Brabson. Keep an eye out for more networking events this fall! In Memoriam S. Muriel Mercedes Doyle, SSJ The Mount community mourns the loss of S. Muriel Mercedes Doyle, SSJ, who passed away on May 26, 2013. Sister Muriel was a fixture at the Mount for many years—she served as the Assistant in the Finance Office in the 1990’s and assumed the duty of school store manager from 2000 through 2005. She enjoyed her position at the “Magic Shop” and forged wonderful relationships with many students. Sister was an avid sports fan, especially the Phillies and Eagles, and could often be found in the bleachers cheering on the Mount’s basketball team. After suffering from some health issues, Sister went to live at the Villa, however, she continued her work at the Mount. She enjoyed coming to the Development/ Finance Offices each Thursday to help with various mailings or administrative tasks and having lunch “with the girls.” We are grateful for her many years of service to the Mount and will miss having her as part of our staff.
