A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT Sawubona! We see you. This Zulu greeting bolstered the Mount Saint Joseph Academy community as we navigated the 2022-2023 school year. The phrase was endearing to members of our community as it continually reminded us that in order to live the mission we must first see our dear neighbor and then be of service to them. Through our service, we live and work so that all people can be united with God and with one another – we see them and they, in turn, see us. This edition of the Mount Magazine highlights Commencement and invites us primarily to see the Class of 2023. However, it also helps us to take notice of our current students, our alumnae and staff members, as well as the generosity of our benefactors reflected in the 2022-2023 Annual Report. While Commencement 2023 feels as though it has come and gone in a blink, the impact continues to unfold. Our recent 121 graduates have transitioned to a variety of colleges and universities around the country. There is no doubt that they are making impressions out in the world, being seen and heard in many places and in many ways, as they share their gifts and talents. While the Class of 2023 has left the Mount, the Class of 2027 has just begun their journey. We see them, too. They are 136 strong and filled with the Mount spirit that has sustained so many classes since 1858. You’ll see the athletic talent and ability of the many students who participated in fall sports. You will see Mounties developing their skills and passions during their summer vacations. We love seeing the Golden Mounties as they celebrate 50 plus years since they attended the Mount. It’s an honor to acknowledge the Alumnae recently inducted into the Hall of Fame. You’ll even see me as I was inducted into my own alma mater’s Hall of Fame! There’s no doubt that the Mount has been seen. Nearly 300 prospective students and their families chose to come visit us for our Admissions Open House. Robotics were seen at GirlPOWER and at Tait Towers, while other Mounties were visible for their winning investment challenge at Saint Joseph University. And our commended students spotlighted the Mount through their tremendous academic ability. No matter who you are or what you are doing, we see you and appreciate you. Enjoy reading about all the dear neighbors at the Mount and beyond—each brings a unique perspective, personality, and preciousness. We count on each of you to help make the future better. Spes Messis In Semine. In Saint Joseph,

President

Founders’ Day Traditions On October 13, the Mount gathered in the spirit of unity to honor the founding of the Sisters of Saint Joseph (SSJs) in LePuy, France. The community gathered to celebrate the founding of the congregation and the Academy with a peaceful walk to morning mass at the SSJ Motherhouse, followed by a dance party at the school. The day ended with students writing Founders’ Day letters to the retired Sisters living next door at St. Joseph Villa.

SUMMER STORIES Julia Brandon ‘24 This past summer, Julia Brandon ‘24 participated in the Future Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) Program. There, Julia was able to learn about government structure, interact with various government agencies including the FBI, DEA, ATF, SSS, and the US Marshals. Julia attributed her success to the Mount saying, “I think the courage, leadership, and teamwork skills that I developed over my three years at the Mount helped me not only prepare for this program but succeed in it.”

Michelle John ‘25 Michelle John ‘25 spent her summer exploring careers in healthcare at The University of Pittsburgh Healthcare Career Scholars Academy. The program aims to educate high school sophomores and juniors in various careers in healthcare, including bioethics, interventional radiology, public/global health, and specialized surgery. Michelle had the opportunity to shadow a CRNA nurse, visit several operating rooms, speak with multiple surgeons, and observe ongoing surgeries.

Sine Thompson ‘24 During the summer, Sine Thompson ‘24 traveled to New York City to attend The New York Times Summer Academy for Creative Writing Program. The program, which is held at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan, has an admission rate of only 10% for its two-week international program. Sine described the application process as strenuous, similar to applying to a college. However, the most valuable aspect of the experience was the opportunity to meet and interact with peers from across the globe who shared her interest in creative writing.

VALEDICTORY SPEECH CONGRATULATIONS TO GRACE O’BRIEN Valedictorian, Class of 2023

The Mount Valedictorian selection is unique as the students are not selected by rank or highest GPA. Students voluntarily submit speeches for consideration by judges from the English department and administration. The winning speech is selected, without the judges knowing who wrote it, based on how well it reflects the Mount mission and exemplifies the graduating class as a whole. Most of you know that two years ago I sadly lost my father. I received a card shortly after his passing on which I reflect today. When I received the card, this card, delivered by a classmate, I had no idea the impact it would have on my life. I opened it during a time of darkness and grief, but this card was a beacon of hope and light because it was signed by each of you. Reading each of your signatures and little messages and looking at the little hearts you drew made me feel supported and gave me a sense of belonging. This card reminded me of the strong community we have; in both good and bad times, this community is a constant blessing. However, our sense of community was not always this strong; in fact, at one point, we did not even know one another’s names. We walked into Freshman Foundations with open minds, and slowly we became acquainted as we learned the Mount ideals. For the first time, we heard, “This school community, impelled by Christian values, emboldens young women with passion, confidence, and competence to find a future committed to justice and peace.” During the subsequent four years, we embraced the mission and grew into a strong community. In freshman year, we were naive, but through core classes and our first ever Founders’ Day and Charity Day, we made friends, learned, and began to coalesce as a community. However, on March 12, 2020, Covid-19 sent us home, not to return until the next year. This unexpected hiatus challenged our sense of community as everything became virtual and our classes became online ZOOM sessions. Nevertheless, we persevered and returned in sophomore year committed to enhancing our community in new ways. We enjoyed flex Fridays, we grew closer with our purple and gold cohorts, we had lunch outside, and we celebrated not having finals. At long last, we reunited at the end of sophomore year. Our classes and hallways were full as were our hearts. In junior year, our community really blossomed. We embraced our new role as upperclasswomen as we realized that we were halfway through our Mount careers, but we remained present and enjoyed the moments we had, such as Junior Week. In a blink, we were seniors. We started this year with smiles and our shiny new senior quarter zips as we listened to Annie Shields’s encouraging words about plants. She shared, “We are a very strong garden that has survived some extraordinary inclement weather. Now, we celebrate our strength, our growth, our beauty, and our survival as we are uprooted and share our unique beauty with a different garden.” Each and every one of us took Annie’s words to heart as we recognized we had come to the end of our Mount road. We celebrated this beautiful community we have created together as the Class of 2023 through many events, such as senior tailgates, retreats, senior nights, Founders’ Day, Charity Day, prom, and every other ordinary day when we were able to be together. We celebrated 121 friends. After spending four years together, we are no longer 121 separate individuals; rather we are one, one community composed of 121 beautiful souls, who have been touched by one another and whose stories intertwine to effect unity and reconciliation. We have all been helped by many people along our journey. We would like to thank God for guiding us to the Mount and through our career here, for allowing us to expand our knowledge, broaden our community, learn how to serve the dear neighbor, and strengthen our relationship with Him. Thank you to our administrators for handling all the activities and business behind the scenes that strengthen our community and better our Mount experience, such as our clubs, sports, and school events. Thank you to our kind, dedicated teachers who never gave up on us and went the “extra mile” to help us grow intellectually and personally. The teachers at the Mount take our belief statement to heart that, “On the education of women largely depends on the future of society.” During the past four years, our teachers have educated us and prepared us for our future through teaching us how to strive for “excellence tempered by gentleness and compassion” and how to find our inner confidence. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, teachers, for bringing us to this moment. Thank you to our staff colleagues who expanded our high school experience beyond an academic setting. Your extra support, guidance, and kindness gave us a fulfilled education and allowed us to be truly present. Having you “in our corner” allowed us to persevere. We would like to thank our dedicated facilities team. Whether their warm smiles as we dismiss from school, a cameo in a Founders’ Day video, or tireless efforts that keep our school functioning and beautiful, their presence is noted and their hard work is appreciated. We thank our families for sending us to the Mount, homework help, and endless support. Clearly, we would not be here today if not for you and your support; we look forward to your continued support and empathy as we continue our journeys. Finally, we should all thank ourselves. Although we had much help, at the end of the day, our perseverance and dedication brought us from freshman year to today. We have developed our characters during the past four years, and I am absolutely excited and curious to see us continue to grow and evolve as we embark on our college adventures. To commemorate the time we have spent together, all our accomplishments, and our bright new futures, yesterday I gifted you a memento, a card signed by 121 young women to celebrate the beautiful community we have created. As you embark on your next journey, no matter where it is and what you do, you can take this card with you to remember that you have 121 friends who love you and support you endlessly. Because we live the ideals of the Mount, I am confident each and every one of us will accomplish great feats and find our own inner happiness. Congratulations, Class of 2023. I am so proud of us. Spes Messis in Semine.

ALUMN AE N EW S

In the spring of 2019, I responded to a Mount Facebook post about personal or professional interest or expertise in a list of areas which later led to an interview for the Mount Alumnae Board and would kick off my first two years as the Chair of the Inaugural DEI Committee. We took an honest look at gaps in resources, training and inclusion among the alumnae population, and responded by providing programming and education on important topics that engaged several hundred alumnae, parents and faculty. And the work continues! I was humbled to be asked to serve as the Alumnae Board President in 2021 and am in my third and final year in the role. Third of a two-year term you’re wondering? Well, this past spring our Board accomplished something that hasn’t been done since 2007—we revised the Alumnae Board Bylaws that were approved by President Sister Charlene Diorka, Mount Administration and the school’s legal team, and we chose to keep the full Board intact for a “red shirt” year for this crucial implementation. With two dozen Mountie Board members and a subsection of dedicated folks on this project, we spent the better part of a year revising the group’s mission, purpose, expectations, term limits, and committee structure focusing on communication, collaboration and partnership with Mount Administration and our Alumnae community with the goals to create a more engaged Alumnae experience. As I shared in the summer edition, we exist to support the mission of the school and create a continuity of sisterhood that empowers women to go out in the world to be successful contributors to society and inspire them to feel called to come back to the Mount to give of their time, talent and treasure to benefit future generations. I feel strongly that our new bylaws and structure will set future Board classes up for success to realize this mission. I am eternally grateful for this experience to serve the alumnae community that has brought me back closer to the Mount, and I look forward to supporting the new Board in its transition. If you have been thinking about getting involved, there has never been a better time to re-engage with your alma mater. Please email alumnaeboard@msjacad.org to share your interest in joining the Alumnae Board. And to my class of 2004— what a year to roll over as we celebrated our 20-year reunion in April! MEGAN KENNEDY ‘92 ROSEMARY MCNALLY AWARD “It is an honor to receive the Rosemary McNally Award, recognizing service and dedication to the Mount. As I enter my 25th year as Head Rowing Coach at the Mount, I still feel the same drive and determination to channel the girls’ energies into rowing well and strong that I felt in the first, unproven years. Rowing serves as a vehicle to live Mount values of teamwork, trust, and hard work, and I am excited for the opportunity to continue to develop these young athletes.”

PAMELA HUNT GWALTNEY ‘79 ALUMNAE HALL OF FAME 2023

“When Sister Charlene shared the news with me that I was being inducted into the MSJA Hall of Fame I felt a rush of gratitude; it was a full-circle moment. I left the Mount as a self-aware, confident young woman: ready for college. I returned many years later with a heart to serve. My place in the Hall of Fame is an honor for which I am truly grateful. I hope that the work I am doing on the Mount’s Board and in my profession proves valuable in the long term and that seeds I have sown and will continue to sow, reap a bountiful harvest.”

MARY SABIA CIAMMETTI ‘80 ALUMNAE HALL OF FAME 2020 “Being named the recipient for the Mount Hall of Fame award was nothing I could have ever dreamed of in my lifetime. Honestly, I thought Sr. Mary Dacey called the wrong person! After losing my 20-year-old son Christian in 2015 from alcohol poisoning, I became aware of the critical lack of education for young folks focused on alcohol poisoning. Equally important is the need for students to learn what medical amnesty is, and how it can help protect them. Having a vision, bringing it to fruition by creating the nonprofit Don’t Stall, Just Call potentially saves lives each and every day. I am beyond grateful for this generous acknowledgement of our DSJC mission over the past 8 years, to be recognized with this honor is humbling. Spes Messis in Semine.”

LEGACY PINNING We welcomed back alumnae mothers and grandmothers of ninth grade students for our annual Legacy Pinning Ceremony on October 18. We are honored that so many of our alumnae have chosen to continue the legacy of Mount sisterhood.

GOLDEN GIRLS LUNCHEON On Friday, September 15, the Mount celebrated the twenty fourth annual Golden Girls Luncheon at the Whitemarsh Country Club. More than 130 alumnae from the classes from 1948 to 1973 enjoyed a lovely lunch, caught up with fellow classmates and friends, read letters from current Mounties, and ended the afternoon singing the alma mater together.

Brittany Fasy ‘03, an alum of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, has established herself as an exceptional individual in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Her journey began at the Mount, where she found inspiration from her peers and teachers. Being a Diocesan Scholar and excelling in AP classes, Brittany did not shy away from academic challenges. Brittany explains that the teachers at the Mount encourage students to ask questions and seek answers. This inspiration and mentality stemmed from former Mathematics teacher, Mrs. Dwyer, who inspired Brittany to pursue a career in Mathematics after enjoying her AP Statistics class so much. She earned her Bachelor of Science in 2007 at Saint Joseph’s University, double majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science. In 2012, she went on to earn her Ph.D. at Duke University in Computer Science.

ALUMN AE N EW S

ALUMNAE SPOTLIGHT

During her time at Duke University, she spent three years of the five-year program in Vienna, Austria, at IST Institute, and with fellow Mounties that were in the program too (Kait Clark ‘04, Jess Klusek ‘03, Kathleen Candando ‘03). There she researched in the areas of Math, Computer Science, and a little bit of programming. The main focus was topological data analysis, which is learning to find shapes in structures in data. She learned to use data to capture patterns, dimensions, and cycles. As well as algorithmic development and methods used to study the data. She joined Montana State after postdocs at Tulane University and Carnegie Mellon University. As a professor and researcher, she continues to excel in academics and the STEM world and embodies the Mount legacy of empowering women to follow their passion, especially in STEM. Mount offered such a well-rounded education that communication with peers and professors during higher education was easy, allowing her development as a professional and researcher. She took constructive criticism well as a way to continue learning and advancing her studies as a professional and researcher. Brittany learned to ask the right questions, and the Mount provided her the confidence of not only herself as an individual but also as a woman in STEM. Currently, she has a wide range of research interests such as computational geometry and topology, topical data analysis, statistics, and more. Her most recent research was featured this year on ABCNews about How artificial intelligence is being used to detect, treat cancer -- and the potential risks for patients. Brittany Fasy initiated the project in 2015 with collaborators from Tulane University and medical practitioners in Bozeman and New Orleans. Her research team developed computer techniques to identify visual patterns correlating with the grade of cancer in the tumors that physicians could use to determine the right treatment protocols. Her words of inspiration to those interested in pursuing a career in STEM is “No matter what you like to do, you can find ways to make it a career. Whatever the passion, you can find a way to make it work.”

A LETTER FROM THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM Dear Mount Family, We are pleased to share with you our annual Report of Philanthropy, which serves as a tribute and testimony to the financial support that you, our alumnae, parents, and friends, so graciously provide to the Mount for the benefit of our students. In Fiscal Year 2023 (July 1, 2022- June 30, 2023), your contributions to the Mount through the Mount Fund, the Maguire Foundation Scholarship Endowment, our annual Golf Classic, as well as our many other funds, was simply amazing. Your generosity encouraged and inspired others to become engaged or to renew their relationship with the Mount – and for that we remain grateful. We look forward to seeing you at Mount events and activities in the year ahead, celebrating friendships, reliving memories, and as always, supporting our amazing Mount students. Thank you to our alumnae who have volunteered their time to act as their Class Agent. The mission of the Mount’s Class Agent program is to empower volunteers to communicate, connect, and contribute. The Mount strives to have two Agents per class for 1960 and beyond to collaborate and share responsibilities. Classes before 1960 have one Agent. If you are interested in serving for your class or have any questions, please contact Kelly Keane Owens ‘04, Director of Development Services, at kowens@msjacad.org.

MAGUIRE SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT The Maguire Foundation has long been a supporter of Catholic education through its Scholarship program. The Maguire Foundation decided to shift from its annual distribution to the creation of a permanently endowed scholarship with the Maguire Foundation’s generous gift of $1,250,000. This scholarship will remain in perpetuity at the Mount, and will provide essential funding for young women who demonstrate strong academic promise, are dedicated to community service, and who participate fully in co-curricular life at the Mount. The agreement offered by the Maguire Foundation requires the Mount to match these funds over the five year period.
