Winter/Spring 2013

From the Editor Greetings from the Mount! The weather is starting to warm up and signs of spring are on the horizon. The hallways are buzzing with excitement for the prom, spring sports, Acadram, community service trips, graduation and much more! As I reflect on my first few months at the Mount, the first words that come to mind are “time flies!” I arrived at the Mount in early November after working at St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia. The transition from an all-boys’ to an all-girls’ high school was challenging, but it has been nothing short of rewarding. Mount Saint Joseph Academy is also transitioning. In this edition of the magazine, you will find an insert that delves into our strategic plan for the Mount as we look toward 2028. This plan shows the upward mobility and ambitious goals that the Mount hopes to achieve. My hope is that this magazine successfully documents what it means to be a Mountie. We have created two new sections in the magazine, “On the Mount” and “Go Mount”. On the Mount highlights school news and happenings from the past few months. Go Mount recaps our sports teams each season

and highlights their achievements. Another new feature, if you didn’t notice already, is the magazine is now in full color; we hope you enjoy the unique design and vibrant color this magazine offers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank and express my deepest appreciation for my predecessor, Beth Racine. Beth served as the Director of Communications at the Mount for seven years. Her dedication was apparent in the amount of time and effort she put into managing and maintaining the School’s communication and marketing office. Thank you Beth! Lastly, I would like to thank the entire Mount community for their warm welcome. We hope that you’ll enjoy this issue of The Mount Magazine, and welcome you to share your thoughts with us. Please send your letters and feedback to mount@msjacad.org. Go Mount! -Maryellen Anastasio Managing Editor & Director of Communications

PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) The EITC is a program which allows eligible businesses to direct up to 90% of their business tax liability to a privately run school like the Mount and receive a tax credit for the full amount of their contribution to the school. These monies then must be distributed as tuition aid to students from lower income families. For several years the Mount has received and distributed contributions of EITC funds from just a few companies. We are seeking to enlarge the participation of more businesses within the Mount community. EITC gives a business person the option of paying their business tax to the state or paying it to the Mount and receiving a full tax credit from the state. For more detail go to: www.newpa.com/EITC or call: Maggie Doyle, Director of Finance at 215-233-3177 Ext.316 or Mary Berko at 856-428-3599

From the President Dear Friends, By now our new look has caught your attention and you are smiling with favor! You have seen pictures, glanced at story titles, and made note of the latest Mount news. I have no doubt that your first impression is positive, and you are tweeting about our fresh appearance. The Mount’s long tradition of excellence and innovation continues to provide the impetus to keep us looking toward the future and on the edge of growth. By the time you read this letter many of you will have experienced Celebrauction XXIX: The Very Best of Philly! The evening was filled with fun, prizes, trips, concerts and a visit from the Philly Phanatic and the Uptown String Band. Suzanne and Ted Pacitti, our chairs are the very best of the Mount. They worked from morning to night, drawing out the talents and gifts of their committee chairs and parent volunteers. With each passing year I am inspired by the dedication and commitment of our parents in advancing our mission and by their support of this good work. Suzanne and Ted made this evening memorable for our guests, and gratifying, as well, for all who gave of their time and genius. Please accept my deepest gratitude. I am sure you will agree that our theme and the setting of the Campanile on the skyline of Philadelphia is one of the best invitations you have ever received. The work of Jim Paul of T.J. Paul and his creative marketing team is astonishing and truly sets us apart when it comes to quality. Jim, from the heart of the Mount I thank you for the endless hours you spend in devotion to the Mount. Every good city has an event planner, and this is true of the Mount. Cindy Moore is an amazing innovator and collaborative leader, who successfully challenged the Mount parents and guests to “go green,” and to defy the tradition of paper bid sheets for the new electronic Bid-Pal devices during the silent auction. Her contagious enthusiasm and upbeat personality welcomed all who came around the table over the months of preparation. Cindy, I am grateful for your innovation, dedication and commitment. Our masters of ceremony, the Comly Brothers kept us laughing and focused on the live auction. The paddles were lifted high and often in bidding for the best gifts ever! For 29 years they have demonstrated a belief in the Mount by their presence and generous support of this event. I am grateful and indebted to them for their outstanding and enduring service. This evening was first rate because we depend on the kindness of our sponsors. We could not do without the generosity of our individual donors and businesses whose gifts and donations enhanced the quality of this night. Please join me in expressing my gratitude for their generosity by choosing to do business with them whenever possible. “Celebrate the spirit that sets us apart.” The Mount, “where exceptional young women are emboldened with confidence and competence inspired to realize their fullest potential, and prepared to shape the future…our Mounties, the very best of Philly.” Each year I have seen our students redefine excellence and choose new ways to shape the future. I hope you felt the pride of being in their midst and knowing you helped them to believe they are the very best of Philly! With gratitude, Sister Kathleen Brabson, SSJ President Mount Saint Joseph Academy

Once Upon a Mattress

The Mount’s fall musical, Once Upon a Mattress, opened on Friday, November 2, 2012, in Fournier Auditorium. Talented singers and dancers from the Mount and other local high schools did not disappoint. In addition to the usual practice of learning music, dance and acting, the students did an excellent job of learning about comedy, comedic timing and even a little slapstick humor. With 92 students participating in all aspects of the production as actors, stage crew and orchestra, the audience was thoroughly entertained and left the theater laughing. Once Upon a Mattress was directed by Maggie and Fran Doyle, music directed by Don Holdren, choreographed by Kathleen Ochs, technical crew managed by Marybeth Competelli and artistic crew managed by Amanda Schreffler.

Walking the Walk The Mount’s “Walking the Walk” program is a yearlong experience that allows students to build connections with students of different faiths. Walking the Walk follows a curriculum developed by the Interfaith Center of Greater Philadelphia that is focused around creating relationships and deeper understanding among people of different faiths. Students and teachers engage in conversations about stereotypes, compare faith practices, participate in prayer experiences and build friendships. It has been an incredible, enriching and challenging experience in many ways.

20/20 Club hosts “Stop the Traffic” with Senator Greenleaf

The Mount’s 20/20 club hosted a “Stop the Traffic” night on February 7 to raise awareness for human trafficking in our region. Shea Rhodes, a former Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney and Michael Goodhue from the FBI spoke about law enforcement efforts to fight human trafficking in Philadelphia. State Senator Stewart Greenleaf spoke about legislation he is currently sponsoring to help law enforcement arrest and prosecute human traffickers. Profits made from 20/20’s fundraisers this year will be donated to “Dawn’s Place,” a shelter for women in Philadelphia who have managed to escape from sexual trafficking.

Team Alpha to Compete at State Mock Trial Competition

Both Mount Mock Trial teams Alpha and Bravo started their 2013 on a high note in the Montgomery County competition. Each team brought home back-to-back victories in their prosecution and defense trial in the first round of trial competition in late January. Team Alpha is under the leadership of faculty moderator Angela DiCocco and attorney coaches/parent volunteers, Jim and Claudia Black. Major Turner moderated Team Bravo, with attorney coaches/parent volunteer Bret Glenn, as well as Mount alumnae attorneys Kathryn Brady ’03 and Colleen McIntyre ’02. Both teams advanced to round two of playoffs in the beginning of February where they endured tough courtroom battles against Friends Central and Harriton High School. Team Alpha earned the point average and jury ruling to qualify for the Semi-Final Round, which took place Tuesday, February 19 against The Haverford School. The key student attorneys who argued in favor of the prosecution were Jane Black ’13, Caroline Dunn

’13 and Mairead Glowacki ’14. The three prosecution witnesses, Lauren Marconi ’13, Juliana Hart ’13 and Fabienne El-Cid ’14, shined on the stand. After this key victory, the team advanced to the Final Round on Wednesday, February 27, where they secured the Championship in Montgomery County. Jane Black ’13, Caroline Dunn ’13 and Fabienne El-Cid ’14 argued in favor of the “defendant” on trial for two counts of murder in the 3rd degree, played by Dena Habboush ’13, accompanied by Bridget Welsh ’13 and Annina Black ’15 who served as star witnesses. Team Alpha is only comprised of nine students. The verdict is in; Team Alpha is off to the State Mock Trial Competition in Harrisburg.

Columbro Receives District 1 Honors

Over the past 13 years Mount Saint Joseph Academy’s Athletic Director, Janet Columbro, has not only advanced Mount athletics, but has also advanced athletics at the state and local levels. She recently received the PIAA District 1 Athletic Director Award; Janet is only the fifth woman in the state to receive this honor since its inception in 1992. “It is an honor to receive this award,” Janet said. “It confirms that what I do on a daily basis is important; to know that my peers in District 1 see my hard work is very humbling.” Janet serves as a delegate representative from District 1 on the state level. Locally, she serves on the PIAA District 1 Committee, Lacrosse Steering Committee and is Vice President of the PIAA District 1 Athletic Directors Association. Janet serves as the AACA treasurer and chairperson for Cross Country and Swimming. She started at the Mount as a part-time athletic trainer in 1997. A year after she began, the health and physical education teacher went on maternity leave. Janet took over and began teaching. Three short years later, the Athletic Director also went on maternity leave. Janet was asked if she would be interested in stepping into the role as interim Athletic Director. “The idea was that I would cover for the athletic director until she came back from maternity leave.” Janet said. “The athletic director decided after her leave that she wouldn’t be returning to work and I was asked to take over from there.” The position ended up being a great fit for Janet. “I was ready for a new challenge at that point in my life,” Janet said. Since her appointment in 2000, she has built an athletic program that boasts three State Titles, 10 District titles and 41 Academy League Titles. There have been eight basketball players who have become 1,000-point scorers, 11 state medalists and two Olympians. It doesn’t end there; since she took over, crew has won 16 Stotesbury titles, one U.S. Rowing National and 12 Scholastic Rowing Association Nationals and has gone to Henley twice. “Athletics is more than just winning championships,” Janet said. “I have put a lot of time and effort into educating our girls on the importance of being respectful and responsible young ladies.” Janet is also a product of an all-girls education, having graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She knows first hand the challenges girls face in life and athletics. She received her Bachelors degree from West Chester State College in Health and Physical Education with a minor

in Athletic Training, and her Masters in Counseling from Shippensburg University, which aids her in treating and mentoring athletes. She also credits her success to great parents and coaches. “I am very thankful to our parents,” Janet said. “They are extremely supportive and always willing to help out when needed. Team parents help with the extras that I can’t get to. They plan kick-off gatherings and team pasta parties, help organize the banquet, run snack bars, organize senior nights and so much more!” “One of the payoffs as an Athletic Director is knowing I hired the right coaches,” Janet said. “I did what I needed to do to create a successful athletic program that was based on more than just talented athletes. I try to hire coaches who understand and believe in the Mount’s mission.” Janet has done more than just win championships and hire the right coaches. In 2003, with the help of the development office and generous donors, she played an active role in the construction of the fitness center, athletic training room and athletic stadium, which includes a track and grass sports field. In 2008, Janet created the Mount Saint Joseph Academy Athletic Hall of Fame, which honored five inductees in the first class and will continue to honor three outstanding athletes every five years. “The Mount is a place I enjoy coming to everyday,” Janet said. “ I love the mission and what the school stands for.” Janet never would have imagined that her journey would lead her to become an Athletic Director, but 13 years later she is happy that she said “yes” to the opportunity. Her hard work and never give up attitude is apparent when you take a look at what Mount Athletics has accomplished in a short amount of time. She is a true leader, committed to the betterment of athletics and student-athletes. We congratulate her on her achievements and look forward to Mount athletics continuing to thrive. M

Transforms Mount Runway by: Alyssa Hirst ’07

Ellelauri came to life at the 2012 Mount Saint Joseph Academy Fashion Show. Conceptualized by Mount alumnae, Elizabeth (Liz) Rymar ’00 and Laura Rymar Ferro’04, in conjunction with Louella Boutique of Wayne, PA, ellelauri was able to transform the Mount’s fall fashion show with color and unique design. After completing her education at the Mount, Liz went on to graduate from the University of Delaware with a degree in Fashion Merchandising. Upon graduating, Liz moved to New York City where she started working for various designers and developing her skills. On nights and weekends when she was not working, she took classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). In 2007, she was offered the opportunity to study at the London College of Fashion in the UK. While living in London, she was inspired, and began to write a business plan for ellelauri. “Most of my first collection was inspired by the time I spent living in London,” Liz said. Laura joined her sister after graduating from Manhattan College in 2008 where she majored in Finance. 12

winter/spring 2013

“I was working in the finance industry in Manhattan and at the same time was helping Liz with the business side of ellelauri,” Laura said. “It was an exciting time; we were continuously working on ideas, and both of us became consumed with the vision we had for ellelauri.” Once Laura joined ellelauri, it became a joint effort to make their brand a success. “We found ourselves doing everything together, from designing, marketing, sales and sourcing,” Liz said. “We worked out of my small New York City apartment. When we were not working at our fulltime jobs, we were devoting all our time to the brand on nights and weekends.” Fast forward a couple years, and they now have an office in New York City as well as one in the Philadelphia suburbs. They have sales reps from coast to coast selling the ellelauri brand.

Their fashions are in over 50 boutiques nationwide plus online boutiques. Their brand is also sold through their website ellelauri.com. They are not going to stop there; their goals for 2013 are to open up their first freestanding boutique and have their line carried in one of the larger department stores. Ellelauri may be young, but their fashions are getting attention in more ways than one. “We have been lucky to have some very popular celebrities wearing our brand,” Liz said. “Some of the most notable celebrities are Jessica Alba, Kim Kardashian, Kendal Jenner and Stacy Keibler.” “We also had the editor of a popular high fashion magazine personally order pieces from our fall 2012 collection,” Liz said. Some of the most gratifying moments for Liz and Laura have been seeing their line credited in magazines

such as People StyleWatch, Us Weekly, Life & Style, More, Redbook, Star magazine and on In Touch’s best dressed of the week. Ellelauri has also been featured on Oprah’s OWN Network, E! Network, Fox Good Day New York and ABC News 4. One of their most recent accomplishments was presenting the ellelauri brand at the Mount’s 2012 Fall Fashion Show. “It was wonderful to be able to share our fall/ holiday collection with everyone who attended the fashion show.” Liz said. “Being able to give back and share our designs with the Mount community was such a gratifying and exciting experience.” This year’s fashion show was not only a fantastic opportunity for Liz and Laura to showcase their fall/holiday collection, but a way to highlight their achievements. For those Project Runway fans, we all know Tim Gunn’s tagline “make it work”; Liz and Laura have done just that. M

Q&A WITH LIZ & LAURA Q: When did you realize that being fashion designers was the route you wanted to take? Liz: I realized it soon after I had started working for a swimwear designer in NYC. I was hired in sales, but had the opportunity to work closely with the designers. I loved being involved in the creativity of design and was more comfortable and passionate learning that side of the industry.

Q: Do you have favorite colors, patterns or textures to work with? Liz: Honestly, the patterns and textures change from each collection. As for colors, I tend to like either deep colors or pastels. Laura: I like working with neutrals like greys or beiges, and then add a bright ‘pop’ piece somewhere. We try to use a variety of textures, to give the line dimension. For example, we’ll work with a lot of silks, and then add in a heavier fabric like brocade or tweed.

Q: Did you know you wanted to be designers in high school? Liz: I always liked art, drawing and fashion but wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do. I did know that I always wanted to start my own company and work for myself. I didn’t know fashion was exactly what I wanted to focus on until my sophomore year in college.

Q: How would you define ellelauri? L&L: Ellelauri is a women’s contemporary clothing line; it is an affordable, luxury lifestyle brand. It is chic, unique yet timeless clothing at an attainable price point. ellelauri is stylish and on track with trends yet wearable everyday clothing for women of all ages.

Q: How has the Mount shaped you both? L&L: The Mount has taught us to be leaders, to have integrity, to work hard and to follow our dreams and passions. These are all values that were instilled in us while at the Mount, and they have shaped us into who we are as individuals and also in our work. Not to mention that being in the fashion industry we are working with women 90% of the daycoming from the Mount made that easy to deal with!

Q: Which Pennsylvania boutiques sell your clothes? L&L: Ellelauri is carried by Aoki Boutique, Pileggi Boutique in Philadelphia, Blink Boutique in West Chester, Boutique Belle Abielle in Newtown, Elizabeth Maar in Haverford and Newtown Square, and Louella in Wayne.

HURRICANE

RELIEF COME TOGETHER NOW HEEDING HER CALL TO ACTION by: Kate Groark Shields ’93

Jeanne Murphy Curtis ’93 understands how firefighters think. She came from a long line of them – grandfather, father and uncles alike. Firefighters get the job done – no questions asked, no time to waste. They are quick, efficient and laser-focused in successfully completing their missions. And Jeanne knew one thing to be very true. If firefighters have to ask for help, it means the need is dire – for they’d sooner exhaust their personal resources to help others before waving a flag for outside assistance. After Hurricane Sandy forcefully slammed into the Mid-Atlantic, Jeanne observed that fire departments throughout hard-hit coastal towns in New York and New Jersey were desperate for aid in getting basic hygiene supplies like diapers, toothpaste and deodorant to victims in their communities. With genetic firefighter blood coursing through her body, Jeanne felt a call to action. This call consumed her. One day, she made a routine visit to her grocery store to grab some items for dinner.

16

winter/spring 2013

Within minutes of walking the fully stocked aisles of the well-lit, heated and clean supermarket, Jeanne could barely contain her emotion as she thought of the many families like hers who were now without the very basics. Now living in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, Jeanne struggled with the disparity between light, occasional media coverage of Sandy in the Midwest, and the devastating details unfolding via national media. Conversations with friends and neighbors further confirmed her belief that no one in the middle of the country seemed to truly grasp the severity and scope of the crisis on the East Coast. Many seemed secure in the belief that the resources available through the American Red Cross and FEMA could address the needs of Sandy victims. But Jeanne knew better. Jeanne and two friends, Kim Stutz, and Kristen Johnson shared a passion to answer the call of those 1,200 miles away. HURRICANE

RELIEF

Mount Hurricane Relief Efforts by: Rachel Heller ’13 & Gwynedd Kieffer ’13 As Charles Dickens once said, “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” On January 19, 2013, over two dozen Mount students, along with moderators Sister Joannie Cassidy and Ms. Eileen Wilkinson, traveled to Belmar, New Jersey. Mouties were tasked with helping the students at St. Rose High School, which was severely damaged due to the disastrous effects of Hurricane Sandy. When we first arrived, we were filled with great anticipation and excitement. When entering the town, we noticed that damage had been done, but when entering the school, we were taken aback by the destruction. The water levels had risen above our heads. As soon as we entered the school and walked down the stairs, the stripped hallways and bare, water-damaged classrooms gave us the realization of the tragedy that these students have been suffering. The students of St. Rose were seeing the true damage of the school for the first time as well. Their expressions were of shock and pure disbelief. The walls were completely ruined, along with three science labs, auditorium, and numerous classrooms. Many of the students had not had electricity for over two weeks. Since the cafeteria was ruined, they were forced to eat lunch in the gym. And that is where we came into play. We were there to help paint their cafeteria and help fix the damage. We spent over four hours painting the walls in the cafeteria and hallways. A little bit of help goes a long way. Doing something as simple as putting a fresh coat of paint on some walls lightened the burdens of Sister Kathy, the principal of St. Rose High School. After working with the students at the school, Sister Kathy and Sister Joannie treated us to pizza at the local pizzeria where some of the seniors have been eating lunch for the last two weeks. It was nice to reflect about our day and to really appreciate our school and what we have. But the day wasn’t over; more was in store for us. Before getting on the bus, we walked to the beach, only three blocks from St. Rose School. After dipping our toes in the frigid ocean water, we reluctantly got back on the bus to return home with humbled hearts. M

Alumnae Dear Alumnae, Spring is here! It is a reminder of the vision and hope of Mother St. John Fournier and the Sisters of St. Joseph who started the Mount on its journey. With your continued support, the Alumnae Association can carry on this journey and become even stronger in the future. Joan, Nicole & Sheila’s

Wa y s t o S t r i k e a H e a l t h y Wo r k L i f e B a l a n c e by: Joan King Cavallaro ’97, Nicole Gryn Ksiazek ’90 & Sheila Kane Gorman ’82

When work life gets stressful, more times than not, it takes a toll on our personal lives. In a world where 70 percent of mothers are employed, we find ourselves striving to create a healthy work-life balance. Joan King Cavallaro ’97 raises two daughters under the age of four with her husband Mike. Each day she is challenged with the task of balancing her career and family. Nicole Gryn Ksiazek ’90 also raises two children with the help of her husband, David, who is proud and supportive of her career. “Family offers a strong support system,” Nicole said. “I was blessed with healthy children and decided to give back by joining the Kelly Anne Dolan Fund board, which assists families with sick and disabled children.” Sheila Kane Gorman ’82 and her husband, Kevin, feel that it is important to pass along the value of a strong education to their three sons. “My life experiences, including my education, family support and ability to remain engaged in my career working part time while raising our children, have played a key role in my life,” Sheila said. “I appreciate the education I received and the Mount’s focus on educating women to be strong, confident and successful.” Joan, Nicole and Shelia all work together at Fesnak and Associates, LLP –a full service accounting firm in Blue Bell, PA. Managing partner, Bob Fesnak, also knows the value of education, having sent his daughter Christine ’08 to the Mount. With a wealth of knowledge on how to strike a work-life balance, I asked Joan, Shelia and Nicole to give some pointers not only to working mothers, but also to young alumnae embarking on new careers and looking ahead to make a plan for the future.

Multi-task Effectively Being effective at multi-tasking is the key (as a mother multi-tasking is inevitable!). We have found that it seems like a good idea to talk on the phone, while working on the computer and trying to figure out the practice schedules. Sometimes by concentrating on the task at hand, it gets done much faster and more efficiently. The Mount offers great opportunity to learn about multi-tasking. If you were playing sports, in the National Honor Society and taking AP classes, you learned how to schedule your time so that you could participate and complete the tasks.

Create a Healthy Balance

Build your Network

Make sure to take care of yourself. If it means exercising, reading a good book or just plain relaxing, find the time to do it even if it is for only five minutes. Those five minutes will go a long way in relieving stress and keeping your mind fresh.

Build connections. Staying in touch with those we have met throughout our lives is important for maintaining friends as well as business contacts. In addition to friends we made during our Mount years, we have created many post-graduation relationships with fellow alumnae. Remember to mentor or otherwise help someone along your life journey - you’ll be surprised at how it will come back to benefit you in some way.

03

Ask about a Flexible Work Arrangement Ask and you shall receive. If your work place doesn’t have alternate schedules – give them the tools to show that it will work for your position. Joan and Nicole both have flexible work arrangements, which allow them to stay home at least two days during the week in non-peak season, and increase hours as needed during January through April. Sheila was able to work part time and be attentive to her family’s needs while her children were young.

04

Harness your Talents & be Passionate Find what you’re passionate about, harness your talents and use them in every aspect of your life! We each have focused our talents on a narrow set of skills and specialize in different areas of accounting. Our firm offers each of us opportunities to obtain further education to stay sharp and specialize in our respective niches. “It wasn’t until I focused my talents on accounting systems that I started to be excited about my work and excel at my career,” Nicole said.

06

Learn From Failure Make your desire to succeed stronger than your fear of failure. As your life changes, your priorities will shift. A life plan that worked five years ago may not work today. Don’t be afraid to make adjustments; eventually you will get to a place that feels right.

07

Prioritize & Organize Learn the strategic skill of being organized in order to stay on top of priorities. When you add being a mother to an already busy life, it’s vital to keep your priorities in order to aid in making decisions with the best impact. M
