A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Go to Joseph! This familiar expression among the Sisters of Saint Joseph reminds us that through the intercession of Joseph, one can endure faithfully in the face of adversity. Throughout his life of crisis, St. Joseph models for us that we must listen to and trust God. That’s what Joseph did time and again without a clue of the outcome. He simply trusted God and that was enough. couldn’t think of a better mentor than our patron St. Joseph to have guided us in the uncertain times of the past year. So, in conjunction with the year of St. Joseph delegated by Pope Francis, the Mount framed the 2021-2022 academic year with the example of St. Joseph. Using the theme, “Leadership Rooted in Gentle Courage,” we journeyed through the year emulating St. Joseph’s creative courage that invites all of us to interpret all things with a positive perspective. And that we did!
Despite the lingering impact of COVID-19 and the multiple variants, a transition in Principal and Dean of Student Life, faculty, staff, and the student body selflessly led by example every day. They labored hard in the spirit of Joseph, the worker. Graduating seniors, who number 118, are settling in at colleges and universities all over the country to engage in outstanding academic and athletic programs. Sports teams displayed continuing excellence in capturing Catholic Academy League Championships while breaking and setting new records. The lacrosse team made program history when they entered the PIAA playoffs for the first time. And the crew team continued to earn regional and national recognition with outstanding honors across many levels of competition.
Creative leadership abounded when students distinguished themselves in science contests, robotics competitions, a student-produced play, musicals and concerts, art exhibits as well as varied co-curricular activities. While our city, state, and country were plagued with violence and disruption, Mount students claimed their voices in the Women as Founders Forum.
Trusting that God would continue to lead us in our efforts regarding equity, inclusivity, justice and belonging, the entire Mount Community (past and present) had the opportunity to participate in an Immersive Climate Assessment. We desire to learn how to live more deeply our mission of unity as we discover who is our dear neighbor. Throughout this year, The Mount Community, like St. Joseph, chose to live fully. We embraced the chaos and crises of the times, listened to and trusted God, and then moved forward with creativity and courage.
St. Joseph, our patron and guide, was known mostly for his work as a carpenter, which called for creativity, resourcefulness, steadfastness and strength. Today, our work demands these same virtues each day. So, we go to Joseph . . for the creativity to see beyond our present reality; the resourcefulness to use the many gifts God provides; the steadfastness to stay with the tasks set before us; and the strength to meet the challenges that come along the way.
encourage you to delight in the gift of St. Joseph and, like him, be delighted by the presence of Jesus in the midst of your busy days. Go to Joseph!

The student body gathered in May to recognize students in the Women as Founders course and learn about their projects and passions that guided their coursework. The 2021-2022 Women As Founders senior honors course met before school under the guidance of Mrs. Katie Kennedy (former Theology teacher). This select group of students worked with a team of faculty to create and execute an advocacy project that connected to their own personal passions and interests. This year’s Women as Founders were Grace Eckert, Kendall Bocklet, Sydney Okeke, Liz Dolich, Ellie Devine, Sarah Powell, and Amilyn Thomas (not pictured).
Their projects were varied and complex, including Sarah Powell’s “Pedaling Against PTSD”—a Cyclebar fundraiser supporting K9s for Warriors (providing service dogs to veterans coping with PTSD); Sydney Okeke’s efforts went to destigmatizing menstrual health and work for menstrual equity, in partnership with The Spot in Germantown; and Kendall Bocklet’s work was with Souls Shot to raise awareness about gun violence in the Philadelphia area and to memorialize those who have been victims of gun violence.
Olivia Forti ’22, Valarie Rubinstein ’22, Margaret Murphy ’23, Ava Knaus ’23, Kaitlin Daly ’23, and Christianna Johnsson ’22 participated in the virtual Montgomery County Academic Bowl. The quiz-format competition tests students’ knowledge in a variety of subjects, as students buzz in to answer questions posed by a moderator.
Effective July 1, 2022, Jeff Kohler assumed the role of Chair of the MSJA Board of Directors. Jeff’s commitment to the Mount has been steadfast for many years. As a member of the Board, Jeff’s input was invaluable, especially through his contributions to the Enrollment Marketing committee. He and his wife, Maureen, have been avid supporters of the school community, regularly attending events and continually striving to live the Mount’s mission. He is the father of Emily ‘04, Katie ‘05, Clare ‘08, and Maddie ‘12.

CONGRATULATIONS
TO MARGAUX BARRETT
Valedictorian, Class of 2022
As the great Italian novelist Cesare Pavese once said, “We do not remember days; we remember moments.” This bold declaration stands out in contrast to the ways in which we, as social people, frequently categorize and address different events in our lives. For example, we remember holidays like Christmas or events like MagicTHON as a collective, grouping all the memories from that specific day under one umbrella because it allows us to organize our thoughts and experiences better. Yet, in truth, the idea that we can remember a whole day is impossible. Instead, as Pavese states, we remember the moments.
Each of us here today has experienced millions and millions of moments. These points in time may seem small and inconsequential, like opening the door for someone balancing her books and morning Starbucks, or they may be significant, like getting into college or meeting soon-to-be life-long friends. Whatever the case, the moments we have experienced at Mount have shaped us into the unique individuals we are today and will continue to influence the people we will become long after we graduate from this academy.
However, the moments we experience do affect not only us but also everyone else around us. Remember the girl for whom you opened the door? She was having a difficult morning, but your selfless act and warm smile “made her day.” In this way, we are all interconnected, each person feeding off the energy and good deeds of the other. Together, we learn from one another and grow as human beings, both in and out of the classroom. We share in one another’s successes and, more importantly, are supportive in times of failure. We understand that failure, though devastating and often frequent, is an opportunity for improvement. In fact, we race toward the unknown with the intent to try—even at the risk of falling. This instinct is the definition of sisterhood, the very definition of what makes a Mount education distinct from all others.
Unfortunately, not every moment we have experienced as a collective through these past four years has been positive. On March 12, 2020, we shared the heartbreaking experience of the unofficial last day of in-person school. At that moment, when we heard the announcement on the PA, none of us could have predicted such a defining moment in our lives. Remember we thought we would not be in school for only two weeks. How wrong we were! For the next two years, we watched as our nation grew divided, as people we loved fell ill, as the world seemed to morph into something that we, in the entirety of our young lives, had never seen before. Not two weeks ago, the noble pursuit of education itself was, once again, threatened by senseless violence, and even today, during this celebratory moment, an unjust, horrific war rages across the sea. Sadly, the list goes on.
As students of today, these harsh realities cannot help making us wonder what lies in store for not only our future but also the future of the world we are inheriting. We have learned throughout history that retreating into fear and doubt during these trying and terrifying moments is tempting, but our Mount education has always taught us to persevere.
We have a duty not only to our faith and sisterhood but also to ourselves to be women of change—to be founders—in today’s world. Through Mount Saint Joseph Academy, we have been granted an education of the highest quality that emphasizes the empowerment of women in a society that does not always mirror that same belief. Therefore, our duty is to utilize all of our experiences, talents, skills, and passions to define a more compassionate world for the generations of women—and Mounties—of tomorrow. Since our freshman year, the phrase, “On the education of women largely depends the future of society,” has been etched into our minds and hearts. Now, as we graduate and become full members of society, is the time to transform those powerful words into equally powerful actions.
After looking back on all of the challenges we have overcome, all of the memories we have made, and all of the achievements we have accomplished, we can and we will conquer and create more. Our Class of 2022, composed of 118 eager and brilliant students, is spreading out across the whole United States. From California to Massachusetts, we will inspire others with the “courage, conviction, and compassion” we will display each and every day as Mount alumnae. Our spirit will be infectious, and our passion even more so. We will study what we had always hoped to learn. We will pursue every path to reach our goals even if doors are slammed in our faces. We will shatter every “glass ceiling” we can find because, as a class, we are trailblazers, who possess a unique and indistinguishable fire. Our rare combination of ambition and empathy, without judgment or hesitation, is a recipe that truly has the potential to transform the world.
That said, we would not be sitting here today without those who have helped us along the way. First and foremost, God, our loving, omnipotent Father, has a plan for each and every one of us. Even in times of uncertainty, we trust in His great design and have faith that each moment He chooses to place in our lives will lead us somewhere remarkable. To our parents and families, whose love and support have been constant, we thank you for everything you have sacrificed that has allowed us to have the life-changing opportunities we have today. To our teachers and administrators, who saw promise in us even when we were blind to it ourselves, we are forever grateful for your belief in us and patience with us. Last, we are grateful to one another for all of the laughs, all of the tears, and all of the moments that have made the last four years ones we will forever treasure.
Before we embark on our own separate journeys, we need to remember every moment we have shared and experienced to this point and every one that is yet to come. Though our paths may diverge here, our purpose to create positive, lasting differences most certainly will never waver. Let us remember this beautiful June ceremony, not as a day, but as a moment that inspires the first day of 118 extraordinary lives.
Thank you.

VALEDICTORY
SPIRIT OF ST. JOSEPH Awards
Pope Francis declared a year of Saint Joseph that began December 2020 and ended in December 2021. During this academic year, while the formal year of recognition ended, the Mount Community looked to patron Saint Joseph as the theme for the school year. Community members collectively embraced the qualities and characteristics of Saint Joseph, most especially his gentle and creative courage to interpret all things from the best possible point of view.
This year Sister Charlene Diorka, SSJ (President) recognized at Commencement a student, parent, teacher, and member of the Board of Directors whose everyday lives exemplify that of Saint Joseph. Through their ordinary involvement at the Mount lived in extraordinary ways, they have been selfless, hard-working (often behind the scenes), a listening presence, and a leader every day. The Spirit of Saint Joseph Award honors how they have brought the mission alive through their humble service and supportive leadership in the manner of Saint Joseph.
SYDNEY OKEKE ’22
Sydney’s leadership qualities were evident, even in her early years at the Mount. Though her unmatched enthusiasm and curiosity in the classroom were noted then, the full scope of her leadership skills were displayed in her senior year. As Co-President of the Diversity Club, Sydney advocated for the student body and initiated inclusive programming as part of club activities.
For her Women As Founders project, she collaborated with The Spot, a local non-profit with the mission of ending period poverty, and led a donation drive that benefited individuals in need in the Philadelphia area.
KATIE KENNEDY
Theology Teacher, 2005-2022
During her 17-year career at the Mount, Katie Kennedy has been an advocate, trusted resource, and influential presence in the lives of many students. Educating with gentle compassion, she was an ally who offered unwavering support to students. She was a dedicated moderator of the Diversity Club and A4A (a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community and allies), and in collaboration with the administration, provided valuable insight on inclusive programming at the Mount.
BOB HAVARD, P’06, ’07, ’15 Chair, Board of Directors
Bob Havard served as Chair of the Board of Directors for 2021-2022. His commitment was steadfast, balancing his dedication to the Mount with his career at Johnson & Johnson, where he serves as Vice President of Business Development. Bob has been a vital member of the Mount community since his first daughter enrolled in 2002. His institutional knowledge and business acumen were priceless assets for the Board of Directors and the community as a whole. Bob led Board meetings and attended all Board committee meetings, providing valuable insight that will assist in securing a bright future for the Mount community.
JENNY FORTI, P’22, ’25
Jenny Forti served as Co-Chair of the Parents Association from 2020-2022. Jenny was instrumental in helping to restructure the Parents Association. She collaborated diligently with the Mount administration to reimagine events for students and parents through two years of learning during the pandemic.
2022 FOURNIER MEDAL Recipient BETH BROWN
Mother Saint John Fournier, the founder of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, was a woman of courage and commitment. The Fournier Medal is awarded annually at Commencement to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of Mother Saint John through distinguished service and loyalty to the Mount. The 2022 Fournier Medal was awarded to Beth Brown.
Beth is a proud parent of three Mount Alumnae: Catherine ’10, Emily ’14, and Claire ’16. She has served on the Board of Directors at MSJA for six years. She has made a tremendous impact on the Enrollment and Marketing Committee of the Board of Directors and has served tirelessly over the years in leading and supporting the annual Golf Classic.
As we continue to honor and recognize our patron, Saint Joseph, she emulates many of his qualities. She is a leader with gentle and creative courage, a down-to-earth hard worker, and utterly selfless. Her commitment to MSJA is outstanding, and the administration is grateful to Beth for her service.

22 mount st. joseph academy - fall 2022 23
Introducing the
CLASS OF
2022
24 mount st. joseph academy - fall 2022 25
We’re well underway for what will be a community-driven, philanthropically aspirational year for the Mount Alumnae community! Last year I called upon each one of you to encourage classmates to rejoin the community if they’ve lost touch, attend programming and events, and give us feedback on how we can best support you in your days beyond the Mount. This year will be no different and we look forward to continuing to set record numbers for participation in experiences and in philanthropic giving. Who can you invite back? How will you make an impact?
One of the ways to do this is through joining the Mount Alumnae Board which recruits each summer for twoyear terms, or to become a class agent. On the Board, we have a variety of professionals, class years and dedicated alums working in the areas of Diversity & Inclusion, Development, Membership, Signature Events, Marketing, Communications & Social Media, and Outreach & Engagement. We meet formally four times per year, with subcommittee meetings in between and participation in planning or execution of a few signature events is appreciated. Like many things, the experience is what you make of it, and we’re poised to make a major impact this year!
Why do we as members of the Board stay connected to the Mount after all of these years? And why do you as the reader subscribe to the school’s content? We are all here because we love the Mount and believe in its mission. Our Mount education is a privilege. The college opportunities, careers and lives we have are in part thanks to the days we had here. A catalyst for things to come. That opportunity comes at a cost, and the financial burden grows each year as the cost of education rises, inflation fluctuates, operating expenses increase, and families consider other options for their children. You have the opportunity to support the Mount Fund, days of giving, scholarship opportunities and more with a gift that is meaningful to you. We are all in different seasons of our lives with different responsibilities and please know that every gift matters and helps.
Along with Emily DePaul ’01 (Vice President) and Tara Hank ’12 (Secretary) and two dozen other talented and passionate Mounties, the Alumnae Board is here to serve you and support you in your days beyond the Mount. Spes Messis in Semine The hope of the harvest lies in the seed. We are planting seeds today for future Mount Alums to see themselves as Board members, volunteers, philanthropists, parents and more.
Class of 2022 INDUCTED INTO THE MSJA ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION
The Class of 2022 became members of the Mount’s Alumnae Association during the annual tradition of Alumnae Induction in late May. The ceremony opened with Emily Kohler Marbot ’04, President of the MSJA Alumnae Association, welcoming those in attendance. A pinning ceremony followed in which alumnae relatives of seniors affixed a commemorative MSJA alumnae pin on the lapels of seniors. Following the ceremony, seniors carried on the tradition of donning their spring uniform skorts decorated with the names and/or logos of their chosen college or university. They also enjoyed fare from food trucks and received their yearbooks.

KELLEY BRISBON HODGE ’89 NOMINATED AS FEDERAL JUDGE
President Biden nominated Kelley Brisbon Hodge ’89 a federal judicial nominee in summer 2022. Kelley was nominated to represent the U.S. District Court of Eastern Pennsylvania.
According to a White House press release, the candidates nominated are “extraordinarily qualified, experienced, and devoted to the rule of law and our Constitution.”
CAROLINE HARKINS GORMAN ’02 HONORED WITH M&A ADVISOR’S EMERGING LEADERS AWARD
Caroline Harkins Gorman ’02, Partner and Vice Chair of the business department at law firm Stradley Ronon, was named one of the winners of the M&A Advisor’s 13th Annual Emerging Leaders Award. This nationwide recognition celebrates the accomplishments of attorneys, investment bankers, and other professionals in the finance industry whose significant success while under the age of 40 establishes them as the industry’s emerging leaders.
In a historically male-dominated field, Caroline has broken many barriers: earning promotion to partner, holding a top position as vice chair of a well-known legal department, and achieving significant career accomplishments. An independent judging panel of members of the M&A, finance, and turnaround communities selected her from a pool of prominent nominees throughout the country for her accomplishments as legal counsel on public finance and all aspects of secured and unsecured financing.
Kelley rose to prominence locally when she was appointed Interim D.A. for the City of Philadelphia from 2017-2018. She was the first Black woman to hold that role.
Now a partner at Fox Rothschild LLC, Kelley was previously Of Counsel at Elliott Greenleaf in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania from 2016 to 2017 and 2018 to 2020. Prior to that, she served as the Title IX Coordinator and Executive Assistant to the President at the University of Virginia; the Safe Schools Advocate under the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency; and a public defender in Richmond, Virginia.
Kelley earned a J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law and B.A. from the University of Virginia.

ALUMNAE INDUCTION continued!
A LETTER FROM THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM
Dear Alumnae, Family, and Friends of the Mount, We are pleased to present to you this Annual Report of Philanthropy, which chronicles the 2021-22 fiscal year donations to Mount Saint Joseph Academy. We are most grateful for the generosity shown by you, our loyal and dedicated supporters.
This past fiscal year (July 1, 2021- June 30, 2022) brought a marked upsurge in support to the Mount for all purposes, totaling over $2,216,000 - an increase of nearly $800,000 above the prior fiscal year. Among the funding areas of interest was the enthusiastic support of the Investiture of Sr. Charlene Diorka, SSJ as the Mount’s third president, a notable uptick in EITC and OSTC support, amazing participation in our annual Golf Classic, and the awarding of a $75,000 grant from the Henry A. Quinn Foundation for the purchase of an Anatomage Table for the advancement of our science department’s curriculum.
At the heart of all philanthropy, however, are the gifts that come from our dedicated alumnae, parents, and friends. Every gift that was made in support of the Mount Fund – regardless of size – made an enormous impact by providing necessary scholarship and financial support to make the dream of a Mount education a reality for more bright, capable young women, When many join together with donations that are personally meaningful, the effect is amazing. The gifts in support of Mount’s academic program are what help give our students a competitive advantage on stage, on the playing field, and in the Robotics Lab. And it is the love and care shown to the Dear Neighbor through your support of our diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
Congratulations, Mount Community, on a wonderful 2021-22 year of philanthropy. We’re excited to see what the new year will bring to the Mount!

Thank you to our alumnae who have volunteered their time to act as their Class Agent. The mission of the Mount’s Class Agent program is to empower volunteers to communicate, connect, and contribute. The Mount strives to have two Agents per class for 1960 and beyond to collaborate and share responsibilities. Classes before 1960 have one Agent. If you are interested in serving for your class or have any questions, please contact Kelly Keane Owens ‘04, Director of Alumnae Relations and Giving, at kowens@msjacad.org.

The Sisiter Claire Helene Society has been established to honor those alumnae and friends of Mount Saint Joseph Academy who have remembered the Mount wih a planned gift or bequest. These gifts become a permanent part of the Endowment, providing a source of income upon which the school can depend and use for years to come. The Society is named in loving memory of a beloved Latin, French, and Theology teacher who inspired two generations of Mount alumnae.
For more information about the S. Claire Helene Society, please contact Mary Ravenfeld at 215-233-3177 ext. 389 or mravenfeld@msjacad.org.
