From the Editor Greetings from the Mount! Every morning when I arrive at the Mount I am in awe of the incredible achievements of our students. In the pages that follow you will read about the Mount’s nine National Merit Semifinalists, the Firebirds hosting their Fourth Annual GirlPOWER Robotics competition, our students serving their dear neighbor by raising $35,000 for the Four Diamonds Fund and so much more. When we began brainstorming ideas for this edition of the magazine, the academic offices were preparing to introduce the 1 to 1 iPad pilot program and our science wing renovations were wrapping up. With two major projects about to be unveiled, we felt it would be beneficial to highlight both of them. In this issue you will find our spotlight article, “On the Cutting Edge: Science and Technology Education.” In this article we highlight members of our science and technology faculty, along with current students who express excitement surrounding their learning experiences in the renovated science labs and technology classrooms. This year we have seen a pivotal change in leadership in the Catholic Church with the election of Pope Francis. Just months before Pope Francis was elected, Leigh Anne Tiffany ’11 had the privilege of singing with the Saint Joseph University Choir for Pope Benedict XV. Her experience proved to be valuable and illustrates another Mount alumna doing truly extraordinary things. Lastly, in this issue we honor those within our Mount community who contributed financially to the Mount in

2012-2013. We thank you for your continued generosity and your support of the Mount’s mission. We hope that you are inspired by this issue of The Mount Magazine and encourage you to share your thoughts and ideas with us. Please send your letters and feedback to mount@ msjacad.org. We wish you and your families all the peace and happiness of this joyous Holiday Season! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year, -Maryellen Anastasio Managing Editor & Director of Communications

Fall 2013

From the President Dear Friends, In my opening remarks to the girls in September, I spoke of a movement taking place throughout the world to educate young women, something the Mount is humbly and deeply proud to say we have been doing for 155 years. I asked our faculty and students to view the YouTube trailer, “Girl Rising,” where they saw young girls from all across our planet standing up and demanding to be educated. No doubt you remember the young Pakistani woman, Malala Yousafzai, who addressed the United Nations this past summer, and who was nominated to be the youngest recipient of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize. I feel a profound sense of pride for the vision and courage of our early sisters whose belief in the importance of educating women is only now rising on the world stage. The quote from our mission statement, “On the education of women, largely depends the future of society,” is as vital and essential today as it was in 1858. As our world expands through travel, and we become more connected through technology, it is imperative that women have the confidence and courage to claim their place. We must stress the ways women learn and provide opportunities to model collaboration when addressing the needs of an ever-changing world. Our Founders In the Sciences Initiative demonstrates the commitment of our Board of Directors, alumnae, parents, and generous donors in providing a state of the art facility for our students to embrace twenty-first century learning. Our students will have colleagues all over the world. Each day when I come to the Mount, I find that my certainty deepens in the women who I see using their intellects, talents, and gifts to stretch their potential to become the best at whatever they put their minds to. I have every bit of confidence that what has begun here will make a global impression and will change the future. I am grateful for the example of our alumnae who have fashioned their futures in a way that makes a real difference in the world. Thank you for your continued belief in our mission and for your generous support of our Mount Fund, Endowment, Founders In the Sciences, and Celebrauction, all of which make it possible for us to provide a quality education to deserving young women. We need you now, more than ever, and we depend on your partnership and philanthropy. God’s blessings and peace,

Sister Kathleen Brabson, SSJ President

Mount Saint Joseph Academy hosted its First Annual Mini-THON on Friday, October 25. The event took place

6

in the Mount’s Gymnasium where over 300 students gathered to participate in a 12 hour dance marathon. The Mount raised $35,000 for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey’s Children’s Hospital. The Four Diamonds fund was founded by a family that lost their son to pediatric cancer. The Four Diamonds Fund works to provide comprehensive care for both its patients and their families. The fund underwrites the cost of cancer treatment that insurance does not cover, while also funding innovative pediatric cancer research to make strides towards a cure.

EVENTS 4

On Saturday, October 12, Mount Saint Joseph Academy hosted its annual Stephanie Leonards Roman Breast Cancer Marathon. The event raised money for the Stephanie Leonards Roman Memorial Scholarship at the Mount, and also helped raise awareness for Breast Cancer. The day included food, music and games. Participants raised money by a flat fee pledge or per lap around the track. Student Council members sold t-shirts and sponsored a dress-down day to benefit the collection. Students were able to dress down in jeans and pink-shirts. 5

The Firebirds hosted the Fourth Annual robotics competition, girlPOWER (Preparing Outstanding Women Engineers through Robotics) on Saturday, October 12. Sponsored by FIRST Robotics, it is the only event of its kind. This event featured all-female drive teams—with participants from high school robotics teams across the East Coast. Spectators were able to see 120-lb robots, programmed and driven by the girls, perform amazing feats, and clash in the

arena. Visitors were also able to learn from the teams up-close, and were offered the opportunity to touch, handle, and even drive the robots as they learned more about the robotics program, and engineering. Also in attendance were robots from the U.S. Navy’s SeaPerch and the Whitemarsh Township Bomb Squad. 6

The Mount’s Fall musical, Legally Blonde followed the same story line as the movie, but being a modern musical, it was told thru song rather than dialog. The show was well written in that it had romantic and comedic songs that could fill the audiences heart with gladness. The cast, crew and orchestra did a great job with a “monster” of a show. What this means is, multiple times during the production, there were many set and scenes changes within a single song. All the changes on stage created a choreography of bodies, both actors and stage crew, as well as large and small stage pieces that had to be moved on and off stage all at the same time. Backstage there was a completely different show going from what the audience was experiencing in front of them. As always, the cast was remarkable. They had been working hard since late August, rehearsing. The orchestra had been in rehearsal equally as long and sounded incredible. 7 As Mount Saint Joseph Academy began its 2013-2014 academic year, three new senior Student Council officers took the helm. The Student Council installation ceremony was held on Friday, September 13, at which the newly elected leaders promised to lead, serve and support the Mount community during their tenure. Pictured right, during installation (standing l-r) Madison Kist (President), Alyssa Kist (Vice President), Rebecca Barton (Treasurer).

On the Cutting Edge:

Science and Technology Education

T

he Mount has always prided itself on preparing young women for an ever-changing society and an increasingly complex technological future. With technology advancing at a rapid pace and near daily breakthroughs in the fields of medicine, the environment and other scientific areas, it is imperative that we continue to refine the scope and quality of the education we provide our young women. Today, the number of women working in the fields of science and technology are increasing, but women still make up a small percentage of the workforce in comparison to their male counterparts.

Science

The Mount continues its proud tradition of staying ahead of the curve. Within the first 25 years of the school’s operation, the Sisters of Saint Joseph introduced a science curriculum. Fast forward to 2013 and the Mount is still on the cutting edge providing its young women with a first-class program in the sciences. “The Sisters of Saint Joseph always pushed for science education,” Kellyann Heck Cilio, Chair of the Science Department said. “With science constantly evolving, they were able to build a fluid curriculum based on the science of that time.” Today, the Mount does just that. As a result of the Founders in Science Initiative, our young women are now learning in state-of-the-art labs and classrooms. The physical space allows for faculty to teach in a safe, hands-on and cutting edge environment. “The overall level of interest in the sciences are higher than ever before,” Blanche Haughton said. “The girls are paying attention and the atmosphere is positive. I believe a lot of that is due to them being in a quality and professional science 12

Fall 2013

space. They take pride not only in the physical space, but in their work.” Students can also speak to the physical changes in the labs and classrooms. “I am taking honors chemistry this semester and it is a much easier environment to learn in than before,” Monica Goebel ’16 said. “Before, paint was peeling off the lab tables, there was no place to store your backpacks and there weren’t enough plugs at each lab table.” The updated labs and classrooms allow for faculty to teach biology, chemistry and physics classes in any of the five rooms. There are ample electrical sockets, gas outlets and sinks in every lab classroom. Other renovations that can be seen are the installation of technologically advanced fume hoods, eyewash stations, showers and upgraded lab equipment throughout the classrooms. These upgrades allow for safety standards to be surpassed as well as allowing students to have enough equipment for group and individual experiments. “The wing was designed to evolve as fast as technology is,” Cilio said. “It is on par with many college and university labs. Now when our students go off to college they have the confidence and understanding of how to operate the technology, all of the needed utilities and science instruments that we didn’t have prior to the renovated spaces.” The renovated spaces help enhance the student learning experience by familiarizing students with state-of-the-art lab environments before college. Even before the renovation of our labs, our faculty worked tirelessly to educate and prepare our students for the academic rigors of college. Now, they are prepared to study and work in the university settings. “Our graduates email us (the science faculty) saying ‘I used my high school notes from (your) chemistry class to pass a test I had in my college level chemistry class’,” Cilio said. “Receiving those emails validates that we are doing great

things and that our students were prepared well beyond the limits of the physical space in the old labs.” Though the percentage of women represented in science related careers is low, the Mount looks to educate its young women to fill the gap. With a hands-on learning environment that encourages students to ask why and how, our girls are receiving a top-notch education to help them tackle any challenges that come their way. “We challenge our girls to think critically and feel that it is important to teach quality over quantity,” Cilio said. “We are producing students of a very high caliber that are not just listening and taking notes, but experiencing the learning through hands-on application.” The science faculty encourages our students to consider careers in science and engineering. The Mount also partners with Penn State University’s Engineering Ambassador program to help introduce our girls to career possibilities in the field. “We invite a group of women from the PSU Engineering Ambassadors to take over the classrooms for the day and work with the girls,” Cilio said. “Our girls are able to see these women that look just like them, talk just like them and that have an active life outside of their major and this can help break down any negative stereotypes they once had.” With the field of science continuing to grow, the Mount is confident that its science wing can stand the test of time in educating our women on how to create, explore, question and investigate all that science has to offer! “It is hard to convey our (the science faculty’s) excitement, it has been like Christmas for us,” Cilio said. “We feel the support and encouragement of the whole Mount Community and we are so grateful for all those who made this renovation possible. Thank you.”

Technology

Like science, another evolving field is technology. The Mount is evolving in the field of technology education by phasing in the iPad Integration Program this year. Currently, students are being encouraged to use their iPads in the classrooms for note taking, textbooks and for research purposes. As the “soft” rollout of this program continues this year, next year will see a full integration of the iPad program in the classroom. “I think it will help with staying organized and with my backpack not being so heavy,” Claire Brown ’16 said. “I also believe it is important for us to evolve, with so many things changing in technology we need to learn about it (technology and programming) and with it (iPads, computers and emerging devices) from here on out.” The goal of this program is to allow students to utilize iPads in and out of the classroom. Having students on one common platform encourages collaboration and innovation. Our girls are encouraged to develop strong technological skills that will serve them well no matter the career path they choose. 1

“The Mount is always staying on the cutting edge of technology education, and we are often one of the first schools to integrate the latest and greatest,” Margaret Toth, Chair of the Business and Technology department said. “It is extremely important for us to stay current in the field as it is constantly changing.” For 14 years Margaret Toth has been educating students on the importance of technology. She works to break down barriers and teaches her students how to think outside the box when it comes to technology. “I rarely teach from a book in my classes,” Toth said. “I teach them valuable computer science concepts and have them put the concept into action so they can see and understand how programming works.” Today, computer science is one of the fastest growing fields in the United States. “While women are earning 57 percent of bachelor’s degrees, less than 13 percent of those degrees are in computer science.1” Like science, women are underrepresented in computer science-related careers. Mrs. Toth is working vigorously to increase the number of students in programming and coding-related courses. With Computer Science Education Week starting on December 9th and running through the 15th, she is working to build interest and awareness. “I have committed the whole student body to an ‘Hour of Code’ during this week,” Toth said. “I have also contacted a number of all-girls technology groups to find new ways to encourage our girls to get involved.” Mrs. Toth’s physical space has also been upgraded as part of the science, technology and math wing renovations. “My physical space is much easier to navigate, and I can work more easily with a larger group of students,” said Toth. Students have also taken notice of this positive change. “The technology room is much nicer,” Brown said. “It is a more fun and sophisticated learning environment.” In Mrs. Toth’s classroom, she has a poster with a quote by Mark Zuckerberg that she points out to her students at the beginning of each year. “In 15 years we’ll be teaching programming just like reading and writing…and wondering why we didn’t do it sooner.” As the Mount continues to advance in science and technology education, our hope is to inspire our young women to think critically and develop 21st century skills that will aid them in whatever they decide to pursue.

Fall 2013

From the Alumnae Association President Dear Alumnae, It is an honor for me to serve as the President of Mount Saint Joseph Academy Alumnae Association. I am excited to be a part of a wonderful team of women who are on the Alumnae Board. The Mount’s history is rich. From our founding in 1858, young girls have grown into women business owners, actresses, mothers, educators, entrepreneurs, physicians, attorneys, scientists and the list goes on. We have a connection and a bond that unite us and for that I am proud. As I reflect on my time at the Mount, I have many fond memories. Those memories are of the classes that I so enjoyed and, more importantly, the educators who impacted me. I remember the sporting events and the championships that we won. The leadership skills that were instilled in me, the focus on developing strong friendships, and the ability to grow into deep and meaningful relationships have enabled me to be the person who I am today. I am proud to share with others that I am a Mount grad and humbled to serve as the Alumnae Association President. I invite you to reflect on your memories while at the Mount. What is it that comes to your mind when someone asks you about high school? Is it a funny memory from retreat, a sporting event, a decorated locker or a teacher that impacted you greatly? It is my hope that you hold many fond memories of the Mount close to your heart and you will share those memories with us. The Golden Girls had a lunch full of laughter and shared memories as they dined together at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club on September 13. The Mount Golf Outing, held on September 30, was a tremendous success. (Many thanks to the organizers, volunteers, sponsors and all those in attendance who helped make that day one to remember.) Our Open House was held on October 20, and our alumnae, parents, administration and students welcomed many prospective families. Many new families visited our alma mater, while at the same time we welcomed siblings of students and daughters of Mount alumnae. On October 24 many Mounties, alumnae and friends gathered together for the Mount Fashion Show, another wonderful event that continues year after year. Pilgrimage to Italy: My Journey to Sing for the Pope by: Leigh Anne Tiffany ’11

W

hen I closed my eyes, I was transported back to the Mount Auditorium. I was standing with the rest of the Glee Club, a binder full of music in my hand and my Mountie sisters by my side. The orchestra tuned as we started clapping and swaying, grinning from ear to ear as we waited for our cue. But when I opened my eyes, I wasn’t looking at the Mount community…I was staring into the face of Pope Benedict XVI. When I started at Saint Joseph’s University, I joined the SJU Chapel Choir, wanting to continue singing after my Glee Club days. In my sophomore year, my choir director called me over after mass. She asked me if I wanted to join a group of students on a “Pilgrimage to Italy” to sing for the Pope. I honestly thought she was kidding. I mean, how many times have you been casually asked to hop on a plane to sing for the Holy Father? But when she handed me the binder of the music we would be singing, I realized that I was about to embark on the journey of a lifetime. In early January, I boarded a plane to Rome. After a long seven-hour flight my choir and I hit the ground running, making it our mission to experience all that the Eternal City had to offer. We saw everything from the Coliseum to the Trevi Fountain, the Vatican Museum to the Sistine Chapel.

Our trip included plenty of singing! The people of Rome warmly welcomed us as we gave a concert for the city at Sant’Ignazio Church. We also sang as the principal choir for a mass celebrated by the Vicar General at St. Peter’s Basilica. The highlight of this entire journey was singing for the Pope not once, but twice. We sang the responsorial for the Mass of the Epiphany, presided by the Holy Father at St. Peter’s Basilica. We then had the opportunity to sing for Pope Benedict XVI in a private meeting. Sitting in the seats where countless diplomats and religious officials had assembled before, we waited in nervous excitement for the Pope to arrive. As he entered the hall, we stood, took a deep breath, and sang at the top of our lungs. When we finished, the Holy Father offered us a special blessing and thanked us for spreading the glory of God through our voices. The spirit present in that moment was a remarkable affirmation of my faith, one that I will always keep close to my heart. As we boarded the plane to return home from this unbelievable pilgrimage, we knew we would miss Rome, but were excited to bring the grace from our journey back to our home on Hawk Hill. While this trip changed my life in ways words cannot describe, when I close my eyes before I sing at mass, I still feel myself looking at the spotlights in the Mount Auditorium with my Mount sisters by my side.

“When I opened my eyes, I wasn’t looking at the Mount community… I was staring into the face of Pope Benedict XVI.”

Golden Girls 2013 Margaret Barett Enoch ’63 & Joan Burger King ’63 Chairs of the 2013 Golden Girls Luncheon

Graduates of Mount Saint Joseph Academy have always had a strong bond, and the Mount’s Golden Girls (Alumnae who have reached their 50th anniversary), gather each September to reminisce and enjoy each other’s company. The 14th Annual Golden Girls luncheon was held Friday, Spetember 13, 2013, at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill. With over 130 in attendance, the room came alive with warmth and camaraderie, laughter and delightful conversation. It is hard to imagine that graduation was at least 50 years ago, and these ladies have maintained ties with one another and with the Mount that grow ever stronger as each year passes.

ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013 “On the education of women largely depends the future of society”

Dear Friends, It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I proudly present the 2012-2013 Annual Report of Gifts supporting Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Within the following pages, you will find those who are committed to the financial health of the school and who believe in “paying it forward” so that young women who desire a Mount education are given the opportunity to do so. Throughout the year, many organizations help to further the spirit and mission of the Mount. Their efforts on countless events help strengthen our community and raise funds critical to the operational budget. The Mount Fund surpassed its goal of $400,000 thanks to the many alumnae, parents and past parents who participated. We are especially grateful to the Class of 1988 whose collective gifts to the Mount Fund helped to purchase the new doors on the Alumnae Room, in memory of their classmate, Donna Hanson Woolman ’88. The Parents Association, under the leadership of Patti Roman, coordinated many activities throughout the year, offering warm hospitality at events like the Freshmen Tea and Open House, and serving our dear neighbor through Aid for Friends. Celebrauction XXIX – “The Very Best of Philly”, successfully brought Philly to Flourtown—complete with visits from the Phanatic and the Uptown String Band. This incredible committee, chaired by parents Suzanne and Ted Pacitti, worked tirelessly for months on this great event. The 20th Annual Golf Classic, chaired by parents Michael and Beth Brown, was a wonderful success and helped to support the endowment and the Eugenia Cooper Comerford ’37 Alumnae Grant. Under the leadership of Trish Zugay Burkholder ’74, the Alumnae Association sponsored many events to enhance our alumnae community. From our Golden Girls luncheon which honors those alumnae who have graduated 50 or more years ago, to Alumnae Induction which welcomed the Class of 2013 into the Association, there is an event for alumnae of all ages. The Association is excited that their regional networking groups are growing and encourages those from all areas to consider networking with fellow alumnae. The Special Events Committee, composed of alumnae, current and past parents, continues to sponsor successful events throughout the year including the Fashion Show and Spring Fling. We are grateful for their enthusiasm and fellowship that helps to build our Mount community. In addition to raising funds for the Mount Fund this year, the Academy also undertook a major project that the Board of Directors felt was necessary. The Founders in the Sciences Initiative sought to completely renovate the science and technology wing and add air conditioning to the first and second floors of the original building. The fundraising for this $2.5 million project began in 2012 and continues today. Because the Board of Directors felt that our students needed these improvements immediately, they voted to complete the renovations this past summer. We are proud to report that the renovations have been completed. We are hopeful and confident that our alumnae, parents and past parents will agree that this was a worthy, important project and show their financial support. I am grateful to Sister Kathleen Brabson and Dr. Judith Caviston for their leadership of the school and to my fellow Board members who volunteer countless hours to make sure that we have a fiscally sound school. On behalf of the Board of Directors, our faculty and staff and most of all, our students, thank you to all who are listed in this report. It is because of your belief in the Mount, your financial commitment and your prayers and support that we are able to assert that “on the education of women largely depends the future of society.” Kent Roman Chair, Board of Directors

Her students loved her from the first and delighted in her joy of teaching science - everything from dissections to creek sampling and DNA extraction! She had the gift of being able to connect with the students and instill in them the love of learning. Steph was a natural in the classroom, and with her presence the girls acquired one of their finest role models a young woman could have - as a professional, as a wife and as a mother. EITC Information Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit

The EITC is a program in Pennsylvania which allows companies a 75% tax credit for donations they make to a Scholarship Organization (“SO”), which is a scholarship program in a non-profit privately run school such as the Mount. In one year a company may contribute to the Mount up to 75% of what they owe the state in business takes. The Mount must then distribute this money to students from families whose yearly income is below $50,000 with that limit increasing by $10,000 for each dependent child. If a business pledges to contribute for two consecutive years, they may then contribute up to 90% of what they would have paid the state in business taxes. As an example: ABC company owes the state of Pennsylvania $100,000 dollars in business taxes for the year 2013. ABC may contribute up to $75,000 to the Mount to be used for scholarships to girls from families earning less than $50,000. This $75,000 is then credited to their business tax liability for 2013. A company must apply for permission to do this by submitting a very simple form to the Department of Community and Economic Development. (Contact Maggie Doyle, Director of Finance at Mount Saint Joseph Academy for this form.)

SOUND TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? It is a win-win for both a school like the Mount and the business owner , as it gives a tax credit which is equal to the amount donated. Had the owner, president or CEO not participated, then the company would have had to pay that same amount of money to the State of PA for business taxes. For additional information contact: Maggie Doyle Director of Finance at Mount Saint Joseph Academy (215) 233-3177 mdoyle@msjacad.org

Celebrauction XXIX Celebrauction XXIX, held on March 2, 2013, was a great success, raising over $230,000 for the Mount! This delightful evening was filled with excitement, fun and friendly competition amongst the bidders using electronic bidding. Thank you to our Auction Chairs, Suzanne and Ted Pacitti, along with an outstanding committee, student volunteers and Auction Director Cindy Moore, who transformed the Mount in an elegant atmosphere including many of Philadelphia’s historic landmarks. The evening ended with a very exciting live auction that was energized by the Uptown Stringband and the Philly Phanatic, making Celebrauction XXIX a night to remember.

Sister Claire Hélène Society Planned gifts and bequests play an important role in the voluntary support of Mount Saint Joseph Academy. The Sister Claire Hélène Society has been established to honor those alumnae and friends of Mount Saint Joseph Academy who have continued a tradition of remembrance at their alma mater. The society is named in memory of a beloved Latin, religion and French teacher who inspired two generations of Alumnae of both the “old” and the “new” Mount. Members of the Sister Claire Hélène Society are those who have left a bequest to the Academy, or have notified the school that they have created a provision in their estate plans to benefit the Mount. These provisions include trusts, arranging bequests and making gifts of life insurance, naming the school as a beneficiary. These gifts become a permanent part of the Endowment, providing a source of income upon which the school can depend and use to plan for generations to come. All those who have notified the school that they have created a provision in their estate plans to benefit Mount Saint Joseph Academy will become members of the Sister Claire Hélène Society and will be recognized in the Annual Report of Gifts unless they wish to remain anonymous. For more information about the Sister Claire Hélène Society and planned gifts, please contact Jill Gregori, Director of Development, at (215)-233-1859, via e-mail at jgregori@msjacad.org.
