THE WONDERS OF STUDYING IN PRAGUE – THE HEART OF EUROPE

THE CITY OF PRAGUE Prague is an outdoor museum filled with a rich heritage of art, architecture, music and history. The city centre is a medieval network of narrow cobblestone streets which will transport you back to the magical atmosphere of old Europe. Prague was off-limits for Western tourists for 50 years. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Prague opened up again as the capital of a sovereign democratic nation. Today this "City of a Hundred Spires" has regained its full splendour. Students in Prague have an opportunity to take full advantage of this marvellous city and its many possibilities. During the first semester students will get a genuine feel of this unique European capital and its people, customs, culture, cuisine and history.

Downtown

Transport

Prague's downtown area is well-known for its maze-like winding streets, old churches and stunning squares. You can find Czech dishes in most restaurants, but Prague also offers many types of ethnic cuisine, from Italian and French to Thai and even Mexican! An average meal, including a drink, costs around 150-200Kc. If you want to save some money but still enjoy delicious food, just take the metro and visit some of the restaurants outside the city centre. A preserved city centre such as in Prague is a rarity in modern Europe. Its architectural heritage includes an array of styles such as romanesque, gothic, baroque, neo-renaissance, art nouveau and cubist. The city is surrounded by dozens of castles, chateaux and historic ruins.

Prague has one of the best public transport systems in the world. Its network of metro-trains, trams, buses and boats (yes, boats!) makes it one of the most convenient cities in Europe to travel around.

Prague can boast many buildings by renowned architects, including Adolf Loos and Jean Nouvel. Among contemporary buildings the most world-renowned is the Dancing House, designed by Canadian architect Frank Gehry in 1992. Due to its glorious architecture, the Historic Centre of Prague was included into the UNESCO World Heritage Site as the largest urban monument in the world. www.msmstudy.com/en

A Prague resident can get anywhere in the city, at any time, without using a taxi. There is one very helpful website – www.dpp.cz – which can provide you with a schedule for all means of transport, including the night transport system. A handy way to look up how to get to your destination! Furthermore, all students are provided with a transport ticket for all types of transport during their stay.

Outdoors Prague is world-renowned for its parks and outdoor spaces. The city centre is surrounded by large green spaces perfect for walking, playing sports, reading and relaxing with friends. Most parks have cafes and picnic areas. A popular leisure activity in Prague is to take a walk along one of the picturesque bridges across the Vltava river. In addition, Prague offers a wide range of opportunities for hiking, with excellent trails right within the city limits.

Prague Zoo The Prague Zoo is by far the city's best kept secret. Despite being named the World's 7th Best Zoo by Forbes magazine, most tourists (and locals) never find the time to visit this paradise just north of the city centre. Unlike most zoos, the animals here are kept in open-air environments that are as natural as possible. Visitors are transported into a world which is entirely different from the city just beyond the gates. Don't miss it!

Outdoor Markets If you're looking for a trinket, a gift or just a very special atmosphere, head to one of the Prague's outdoor markets. The Christmas and Easter markets are the most famous, and rank among the best in Europe. The Old Town Square draws the biggest crowds, with over 100 vendors selling hand-made goods and delicacies. For food markets head for Namesti Miru or the Vltava river bank on a Saturday morning.

Sports Of all sports in the Czech Republic, soccer and ice hockey are indisputably the most popular. Both are represented in Prague by two rival teams - Sparta and Slavia. Sparta players have made their contributions to the greatest achievements of the Czech national team. Both teams are regular participants in the Champions League and European League. The International Football Academy in Prague works together with the Football Association of the Czech Republic and the best football club in the Czech Republic – Sparta Prague (www.sparta.cz). 9

Prague offers many fascinating activities: city tours, museums, boat trips, a world-famous zoo, an aqua-park, beach volleyball, live music, street festivals and many other events. The city is located in the heart of Europe and is very close to many other famous European cities. One-day trips to Berlin, Vienna, Dresden and Munich are popular among tourists, allowing you to visit more than one city in one trip.

19

6

TRIPS FROM PRAGUE During your stay, the International Union of Youth (MSM) will organise a cultural program, entertainment events and trips to foreign countries. Travelling is one of the greatest excitements that you can have! The Czech Republic is located right at the heart of Europe, which makes travelling to other cities easier and more affordable than anywhere else. Here is a quick overview of destinations and trips which we organise as part of our program:

centre for youth in Europe. Berlin is a city with an inspiring history, and undoubtedly one of the most progressive and impressive cities in the world. Many large European or international organisations have their head office in Berlin, and it is renowned as the hub of German and international business, politics and culture.

Dresden Berlin Berlin is the capital of Germany and a well-known centre of modern European history. It is one of Europe's most energetic cities, hosting a wide array of museums, art galleries, theatres and music halls. Many young Germans and international artists move to settle in this city, as Berlin has proved itself a globally-popular centre

20

www.msmsport.eu

www.msmstudy.com/en

Dresden is another city with an impressive background which is definitely worth a visit. The city was completely destroyed in the Second World War and the historical centre had to be carefully rebuilt based on old maps and plans which remained. Until the 1990's, Dresden was a part of East Germany and rejoined the rest of the country after the fall of the Berlin wall. Based on the banks of the Elbe River, the city is full

of forests, gardens and parks, making it one of the greenest urban centres in Europe. Dresden was home to Wilhelm Wagner, the opera composer who worked here in the 1800s. Today independent opera-houses continue his art by hosting classical and modern shows on their stages. Art aficionados will fall in love with the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) and the Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault) museum.

East and West. A visit to a neighbourhood coffeehouse might seem quite mundane to a foreigner, but is a special ritual and a part of their culture for the locals. It is very easy to get used to these palatial yet welcoming cafes, as well as their delicious coffee and Sacher cake – a luscious national desert. After such an experience, your local cafes seem beyond comparison. Between coffee breaks, visitors should explore Vienna’s Schonbrunn and Imperial Palaces. Another event you cannot miss is, of course, a concert in the world-renowned Vienna State Opera House.

This town was founded by Charles IV in the XIV century. According to the legend, the emperor built the city after the accidental discovery of the thermal springs. From the XVI century this spa centre was honoured by the visits of many noble families and wealthy citizens. One of the most popular social events in Karlovy Vary is the International Film Festival, which attracts professionals and Hollywood stars as well as amateurs and movie fans. Karlovy Vary also often features as a location for famous films, and many of their best scenes have been shot in the city streets. Casino Royal, one of the James Bond movies, is a striking example.

Vienna Vienna is a city of almost 2 million citizens, and since its foundation in the 11th century, it has been portrayed as the bridge between a thousand cultures. Vienna is situated on the Danube River, not far from the Alps. It is important to remember that Vienna lies at the heart of the EU, and for this reason could be described as a as a crossroads between North, South,

Karlovy Vary The town of Karlovy Vary is situated about 120 km from Prague and is a world-renowned health resort hosting the best and most famous spas in the world.
