BLACK ART AUCTION AVAILABLE WORKS
BLACK ART AUCTION AVAILABLE WORKS Thank you all for making Black Art Auction’s May sale exciting and successful! The consignors of these great works have been the stewards of this art as well as the supporters of art created by African Americans. In many cases they acquired these items directly from the artists, lending support in a time when that was not always common. Everyone wants to get a good deal and we all have budgets that demand responsible decision-making. I encourage creating good deals versus looking for good deals. Please let me explain: the record price at auction for a work by Norman Lewis ten years ago (2011) was $108,000; a new record was established in 2019 for $2,780,000. What we need to keep in mind is that the person that paid the record price in 2011 was not looking for a deal—in fact, he or she paid the most ever for that work. As it turns out, that was a good deal—and became one in a very short time. Yes, there are differences in those two works, but there is little doubt the one sold in 2011 has increased in value. Artworks by many African American artists have followed the same market trend. It isn’t necessarily required to pay a low price to get an incredible deal. The consignors did their part some time ago, and we can take that baton and continue to support this market. That will make all of the works good deals in the future. —Thom Pegg, BLACK ART AUCTION
