The Arrowhead region is the magical part of Minnesota with rushing rivers, rocky formations and views of Lake Superior. Ride from shore to woods to overlooks on North Shore trails.

21 NORTHWEST

The Northwest corner of the state is home to Polaris and Arctic Cat — little wonder that so many riding opportunities exist here. And it’s growing. Two new trail systems appear here: Wilton Trails Northwest and the Warroad/Roseau trails.

14 NORTH CENTRAL

The northern heart of the state has 450 miles of trail, much of it interconnected for numerous loops and trails to explore. These trails weave among the tallest pines in the state.

24 SOUTH

Ride amongst the beautiful blufflands and prairies of southern Minnesota. Whether it’s the ups and downs of the Mississippi River Valley or the endless views, this area has its own style of play and exploration.

STATE FOREST LANDS OHVs are generally permitted on the state forest roads and trails in accordance with state forest motor vehicle use classifications and regulations. Motor Vehicle Use Classification and Rules Minnesota state forests have been classified into three groupings for off-highway and motor vehicle use: Managed, Limited and Closed. • • •

In managed state forests north of Hwy. 2, OHVs may operate on mapped trails and other existing access routes that are not gated or posted closed. In both managed and limited state forests, forest roads are open to OHV use unless posted closed. In limited state forests, OHV operation is allowed only on signed and mapped routes that are open for that type of OHV use.

REGISTER YOUR OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE All-terrain vehicles (ATV), off-road motorcycles (OHM) and off-road vehicles (ORV) must be registered with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) unless they are registered in another state or country and not in Minnesota for more than 30 days. If a state does not require a registration, it must be registered in Minnesota. All OHVs can be registered at a deputy registrar of motor vehicles office (where automobile licenses are handled) or at the DNR License Bureau in St. Paul. You can also register or renew registrations online at www.mndnr.gov. Many ORVs are licensed for highway use. An ORV license for highway use that is also operated on designated public ORV use areas or trails must have both the regular vehicle license and DNR ORV registration.

NON-RESIDENT TRAIL PASSES All non-residents must purchase a non-resident ATV, OHM or ORV trail pass to ride on state or grant-in-aid trails. This pass is not required if the machine is registered in Minnesota. Non-residents do NOT need a pass if operating on a portion of a trail that is owned by the person or the persons spouse, child, or parent. Non-resident Trail Passes are available through the Electronic License System (ELS). ELS gives you three options for buying licenses: • online at www.dnr.state.mn.us/licenses/ohv/index.html • by phone : 1-888-665-4236 (1-888-MNLicense). Call any time of day or night, seven days a week. This toll-free call provides immediate licensing by way of a license identification number, which will be issued at the time of the call. The license identification number is valid until you receive an actual license in the mail. All purchases must be made by credit card. • or in person at numerous ELS locations across Minnesota including convenience stores and gas stations. All purchases must be made by credit card online or by phone. An additional convenience fee is added for sales via Web site or telephone Duplicates are also available via any of the purchasing methods.

SAFETY TRAINING REQUIREMENTS Ages 11-15: Training is available to youth ages 11-15. (Certificate is valid when student turns 12 years of age.) Must complete the ATV CD and attend and pass the ATV Safety Training class. Class information can be found at www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/ vehicle/atv/index.html. Ages 16 and Older: Anyone who operates an ATV and is born after July 1, 1987 must complete the ATV CD Training Course before operating an ATV. Contact the DNR Information Center to receive a copy at 888-646-6367 or 651-296-6157.

Soo Line South + Spur Trails

EC

Soo Line South The 126-mile Soo Line South trail passes through five counties and two states, between Royalton and Saunders Junction, south of Superior, Wisconsin. This former rail bed traverses farmlands, wetlands and woodlands. It skirts the south side of Mille Lacs via Isle and also passes through McGrath and Moose Lake, with the most scenic spots on the trestle bridge over the Kettle River. This artery offers diversions onto trail loops, including the Red Top ATV Trail, Solana State Forest and the Soo Pits ATV trails. In Moose Lake, it links to the Soo Line North ATV Trail (see page 14).

Solana State Forest OHV Trails & Solana Loop Three rivers flow through the 68,000-acre Solana State Forest: the Snake, Rice and Split Rock. The forest, with gently rolling terrain, has an extensive offroad system with 76 miles of ATV trails, 70 miles of OHM trails and 28 miles of ORV trails. Check trail conditions before going: the trails can close after a rainfall due to the heavy soils. Trails are accessible from the city of McGrath or via the Soo Line South, which cuts diagonally across the southeast corner of the forest.

Gandy Dancer Connections

Red Top ATV Trail

The Red Top ATV Trail is laid out in a series of challenging loops that have developed a reputation for abundant technical backwoods riding and plenty of rocky terrain. Enthusiasts can loop around on trails such as Sink Hole Road, the rugged Adventure and Ten Bruin and feel like they’re miles away from civilization, yet it’s a quick ride east to McGrath or west to Isle on the Soo Line South Trail to re-enter populated areas. There’s a shelter in the middle of the loops, and The two ends of 98-mile Northern Gandy access to the Snake River campground. Dancer rail trail are in Wisconsin (Danbury and Superior) but it cuts through 30 miles of remote Minnesota forest. Through the Minnesota portion, it connects St. Croix State Forest to the Nemadji and Matthew Lourey trails. The Gandy Dancer is open to ATVs, OHMs and ORVs. The forest-covered trail is a popular destination for a wide variety of riders and has very few road crossings.

St. Croix State Forest OHV Trails The St. Croix State Forest OHV Trails is a place to witness regeneration. The 18-mile Straight Arrows multi-use trail, in the northeast, features steep hills, tight curves and long straightaways. The Straight Arrows connects to more trails in Wisconsin’s Douglas County. NEMADJ I STATE FOREST

The Matthew Lourey State Trail also runs through the St. Croix State Forest and the Nemadji, but more inland from the Wisconsin border. The trail connects the two forests in the winter for ATVs, but not in the summer. Portions of the trail are open to ATVs in the summer in the respective forests. The trail is named after an area soldier killed in Iraq — this was a trail that he enjoyed. The trail is remote, and an observant rider could see deer, red fox, porcupine, coyote, timber wolves or even a black bear. Distance: 47 miles Difficulty: Easy to more difficult Parking/Trailhead Location(s): Parking in both Nemadji and St. Croix State Forest. Season: Open year round Vehicles Allowed:

The 64,000-acre forest area is a complex of wetlands and forest, complemented by several large shallow wild rice lakes, extensive marsh areas and wooded swamp. Trails are located in the northern and southern areas of the forest, with challenging loops connected via forest roads.

Heading northwest on the Soo Line North, the first diversion is Lawler Loops. This 16-mile scenic diversion shows a cross-section of Minnesota northlands. The trail consists of five loops on either side of the Soo Line. Boardwalks cross over wetland areas for a unique riding experience.

The Blind Lake Connector is the next trail spur heading northwest. This trail juts off in a southerly direction, heading 33 miles into western Aitkin County. The trail splits and makes a lap around Blind Lake. The trails are wide and weave through a range of forest habitat, past lakes and ponds. There are plenty of nice picnic areas and restrooms along the trail.

The most exciting thing about theBignew Hill Rice Laketwo City Trail is that it provides a link to more trail systems: the Rabey Line and the new UPM Blandin trails. And it does so with gusto. This is a challenging route Moose River and Connector with steep climbs in the Quadna Mountain Park area and a bridge that crosses 600 feet above the Willow River. In addition to linking trail systems, it also connects the towns of Swatara and Hill City.

Thistledew ATV Trail

This trail through the George Washington State Forest has both densly wooded areas and newly cleared areas of harvested pine that show the variations in the landscape. Look for abundant red pine, white pine, jack pine, white spruce, balsam fir and hardwoods. The trail passes by Hartley, Scooty and Wolf lakes and crosses the Prairie River’s west fork. Camp for free, or just use the restroom, at the Wolf Lake county campground.

Located in Itasca County, the 25-mile Thistledew ATV Trail features north and south meandering loops through thick sections of large Norway pine and aspen regeneration areas at varying stages of development. Loop options allow for rides of varying length. The densely forested north loop winds past Five Island, Buttonbox and Crumb lakes, while the south loop directs riders near the north end of Thistledew Lake. Both loops are shared with horseback riders. Camping is available along the trail.

Take the railbed to the end of the trail and work the loops back — or vice versa. Appleton Area Recreation OHV Park S

This old gravel mine was recycled into the 330-acre Appleton Area Recreation OHV Park. It opened in 2003 as southwestern Minnesota’s first OHV riding area, and expanded in 2007. The trails are narrow and technical with rolling terrain. Adding to the appeal of the area, the city of Appleton, in Swift County, is off-road rider friendly, meaning ATVs can travel on posted roads within city limits.

Superior and Chippewa National Forests Superior and Chippewa National Forests offer a great opportunity to enjoy riding. Though they are wonderful areas to ride, there are some restrictions. Be sure to call ahead or check the forests’ Web sites for specific information and updated maps. You can also call one of the several offices. Because some roads have not been regularly maintained, brush and windfalls might be encountered.
