18 NORTH CENTRAL If you’re looking for long arteries, endless connections and loops, the North Central region is the spot for you. With the addition of the new Emily-Outing Trail and the Miller Black Bear Trail coming this summer, there are over 500 miles of trail.
10 EAST CENTRAL
On either side of Highway 35, between Duluth and the Twin Cities, are the East Central trails. Made up of long stretches and shorter loops, the trails run through river wetlands and several state forests populated with northern hardwoods.
22 NORTHWEST
In the land of Paul Bunyan, everything is bigger. Trails pass through some of the state’s most beautiful state forests and wildlife management areas. Ponds, bogs and pothole lakes help shape the terrain, and several single-track trails cater specifically to OHMs.
14 IRON RANGE
The trails in the Iron Range area offer shaded riding in the woods, wide open areas to take in the landscape, and are dotted with lakes. It’s here you’ll find the popular Iron Range OHV State Recreation Area and the new Mesabi Mountain ORV Trail.
25 SOUTH
Wind and roll your way through the picturesque prairies, bluffs and the Mississippi River Valley in the Southern region of the state. Climb your way up to breath-taking overlooks, or hone-in your skills at one of the many practice tracks or scramble areas.

STATE FOREST LANDS OHVs are generally permitted on the state forest roads and trails in accordance with state forest motor vehicle use classifications and regulations. Motor Vehicle Use Classification and Rules Minnesota state forests have been classified into three groupings for off-highway and motor vehicle use: Managed, Limited and Closed. • • •
In managed state forests north of Hwy. 2, OHVs may operate on mapped trails and other existing access routes that are not gated or posted closed. In both managed and limited state forests, forest roads are open to OHV use unless posted closed. In limited state forests, OHV operation is allowed only on signed and mapped routes that are open for that type of OHV use.
REGISTER YOUR OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE All-terrain vehicles (ATV), off-road motorcycles (OHM) and off-road vehicles (ORV) must be registered with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) unless they are registered in another state or country and not in Minnesota for more than 30 days. If a state does not require a registration, it must be registered in Minnesota. All OHVs can be registered at a deputy registrar of motor vehicles office (where automobile licenses are handled) or at the DNR License Bureau in St. Paul. You can also register or renew registrations online at www.mndnr.gov. Many ORVs are licensed for highway use. An ORV license for highway use that is also operated on designated public ORV use areas or trails must have both the regular vehicle license and DNR ORV registration. NON-RESIDENT TRAIL PASSES All non-residents must purchase a non-resident ATV, OHM or ORV trail pass to ride on state or grant-in-aid trails. This pass is not required if the machine is registered in Minnesota. Non-residents do NOT need a pass if operating on a portion of a trail that is owned by the person or the persons spouse, child, or parent. Non-resident Trail Passes are available through the Electronic License System (ELS). ELS gives you three options for buying licenses: • online at www.dnr.state.mn.us/licenses/ohv/index.html • by phone : 1-888-665-4236 (1-888-MNLicense). Call any time of day or night, seven days a week. This toll-free call provides immediate licensing by way of a license identification number, which will be issued at the time of the call. The license identification number is valid until you receive an actual license in the mail. All purchases must be made by credit card. • or in person at numerous ELS locations across Minnesota including convenience stores and gas stations. All purchases must be made by credit card online or by phone. An additional convenience fee is added for sales via Web site or telephone. Duplicates are also available via any of the purchasing methods. SAFETY TRAINING REQUIREMENTS Ages 11-15: Training is available to youth ages 11-15. (Certificate is valid when student turns 12 years of age.) Must complete the ATV CD and attend and pass the ATV Safety Training class. Class information can be found at www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/ vehicle/atv/index.html. Ages 16 and Older: Anyone who operates an ATV and is born after July 1, 1987 must complete the ATV CD Training Course before operating an ATV. Contact the DNR Information Center to receive a copy at 888-646-6367 or 651-296-6157.

St. Croix State Forest Trails
30 miles of the 98-mile long Northern Gandy Dancer Trail are located in Minnesota, while the other 68 run through the lands of our neighbors to the east. The St. Croix State Forest Trail connects to the Nemadji and Matthew Lourey trails in our state, where riders will cut through remote wooded areas. With camping available in both the St. Croix and Nemadji state parks, the Gandy is a popular trail for riders of all levels.
Tour the State Croix State Forest via the scenic 26-mile trail that runs through it. The forest is heavily wooded, having cycled through several growth seasons after a wind storm toppled many of the trees in 2011. With its own campground and a connection to the Gandy Dancer Trail, the St. Croix Forest Trail is a great place to begin or end your day’s riding.

EAST CENTRAL Nemadji State Forest OHV Trails
Matthew Lourey State Trail
Composed of the Washington Ramsey ATV Trails and the Nemadji Straight Arrows OHM Trails, there are 100-miles of trail in the Nemadji State Forest, which is one of the state’s most popular riding areas. In the south, the ATV trail covers gently rolling lands, which transform into more challenging and steep valleys as you move north. The OHM trails are single track, and require riders to keep their head on a swivel through tight curves and steep uphills. Connect to the Matthew Lourey State Trail and the Gandy Dancer Trail to tack on additional miles.
The Matthew Lourey State Trail is named so in honor of Matthew Lourey, a local marine who lost his life while serving in Iraq ten years ago. Running through the St. Croix and Nemadji state forests, the Matthew Lourey State Trail offers 47-miles of wooded scenery. If you’re hoping to take-in some wildlife, deer, red fox, porcupine, coyote, timber wolves and even black bear can be spotted. The trail connects the two state forests in the winter, but not in the summer; there are open ATV trails in each forest in the summer.

For those wanting to hone in on their riding skills, there is also a large gravel pit, which provides a perfect practice space.

IRON RANGE Chisholm Trail
Little Moose ATV Trail
With its trailhead in the ATV-friendly community of Chisolm, which allows in-city riding from 6 a.m.10:30 p.m., the Chisholm Trail is a great place to start your day’s ride. The 11-miles of trail wind through the Superior National Forest, where mixed pines and hardwoods are abundant. Climbing hills and rounding hairpin turns add to the excitement of the trail, as does the chance to spot some local wildlife.
Lakes, woods and the Prairie River define the landscape riders can expect on the 18-mile Little Moose Trails. Dense variations of pine, white spruce, balsam fir and hardwoods make up most of the George Washington State Forest, although they give way to newly cleared areas that allow riders to look out on the vast surrounding landscape. Hartley, Scooty and Wolf lakes border the trail, and there’s a crossing over the west fork of the Prairie River.
Distance: 11 miles Difficulty: Easiest Parking/Trailhead Location(s): Half mile north of Chisholm to Sever Road, or access the trail at the intersection of Hwy. 5 and Connors Road. Season: Year round, with selected areas closed for deer hunting season Vehicles Allowed:

Soo Line North This series of trails, which follows the former railroad grade, is 150-miles long and passes through Aitkin, Carlton and Cass counties, with stretches from Moose Lake to Lawler, from Lawler to Shovel Lake and from Shovel Lake to five miles east of Cass Lake.
