ife happens fast, and this past week I was reminded the same can be said for the snowmobile industry. I’ve been blessed to be involved in the powersports industry for the better part of 30 years. During that span I’ve been fortunate to have had the chance to ride and evaluate just about every snowmobile produced – some were winners, others…not so much. But regardless of how “good” or “bad” those sleds were, each have played a valuable role in the evolution of the sport.
There’s little doubt today’s modern snowmobile looks and rides dramatically different and is far superior compared to one from 40-years ago. But what I realized recently is the same can be said for a snowmobile from just 10-years, even 5-years ago. You could say I’ve become comfortably numb to the incremental but often significant improvements snowmobiles have made and continue to make year-over-year. The same can be said for helmets, apparel, and just about everything else related to this sport.
I say this not to brag, but to recognize the hard work and dedication so many put forth to make the snowmobile one of the most remarkable and magical vehicles in the world. If you haven’t experienced the latest innovations, the new technology, the incredible ride quality, and the performance of today’s latest snowmobiles, you owe it to yourself to ride one this winter.
Whether you consider yourself an enthusiast, a casual rider thinking about returning to the sport, or maybe you want to become a new rider, make this the winter you rediscover or ignite the magic of snowmobiling. I can guarantee, you will walk with a smile that will be hard to erase and memories that will last a lifetime.
isma grant program reaches $1.54 million in awards
he members of the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (Arctic Cat, BRP, Polaris and Yamaha) are pleased to announce that this year the ISMA Grant Program will award over $44,000 in grants being distributed to 15 organizations in the United States and Canada. The organizations are active members of the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations (CCSO) or the American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA). The ISMA grants are awarded to the state and provincial associations based on their support of key issues of importance in the grant process.
The ISMA grant process includes but is not limited to:
Supporting efforts which enable snowmobilers to continue snowmobiling in regions and riding areas enjoyed by enthusiasts.
Supporting and participating in legislative enlightenment rides for elected local, federal, provincial, and state representatives.
Supporting introductory rides for non-snowmobilers have also been realized through the grant program.
The promotion of the Safe Riders! campaign and the Take the Pledge Program – highlighting snowmobile safety and staying on designated trails and legal riding areas.
In this year’s allocation of ISMA grants, ISMA was pleased to support search and rescue educational projects along with continuing to expand and support safe snowmobiling in avalanche country.
The ISMA grant program began in the year 2001 and to date ISMA has awarded over $831,000 in grants to state snowmobile associations and over $720,000 in grants to provincial associations! Well over $1.54 million dollars has been distributed to snowmobile associations in North America supporting key activities that support organized snowmobiling. The manufacturers of ISMA are pleased to note that matching funds raised by the associations in performing these activities has generated over $2 million dollars in economic investments in the organized snowmobile community. These investments help to improve our riding areas, our trails, and safety training. Our joint interaction on the grant program supports the snowmobiling community in so many important ways.
The ISMA grant program has been successful in accomplishing many small to mid-range construction projects, improving riding areas, trailheads, as well as dramatic expansion in the Safe Riders! You make snowmobiling safe campaign. Thanks to all who have participated in the grant program and who joined the manufacturers in supporting the continuation and expansion of the program.
SKI-DOO PLAYS IT SAFE
RP Inc. is committed to promoting responsible riding and increasing its efforts to empower all riders in the powersports communities to ride responsibly and rethink the way they approach safety, environment, and riding etiquette. Ski-Doo, a BRP brand, is doing that by engaging riders on four unique fronts focused on improving rider safety and preserving our sport for years to come:
Take the Pledge for our Playgrounds
Ski-Doo calls on the entire snowmobiling community to “Take the Pledge” — a collective effort to preserve access to trails on private and public lands and backcountry winter playgrounds. Trespassing and illegal off-trail riding is threatening snowmobile access. The brand encourages all snowmobilers to be responsible, and pledge their commitment to ensure the sport continues to flourish today and for future generations of riders.
and lent 14 snowmobiles last year, and will again this year, to help provide avalanche reports and real world data to all riders.
Protect. Access. Sustain. Support.
For a second year in a row, the Ski-Doo Snow P.A.S.S. program returned to help fund community-led projects that improve the sport of snowmobiling. As of today, it has provided funding toward more than 175 projects. In partnership with its incredible network of dealers, the grant program offers up to $5,000 in matching funds to grassroots associations and clubs engaged in the many activities that ensure the health of the sport.
The 2023 International Snowmobile Safety Week
From January 14-22, Ski-Doo and BCA will piggyback on safety week awareness messages to educate the riders on code of conduct to protect the social acceptability of the sport. To do so, ambassadors of the brands will be asked to create and share content with their communities, and reinforce the key pillars of Responsible Rider: safety — get the gear, environment — get the forecast, and etiquette — get out of harm’s way. Stay tuned on SkiDoo social platforms to view the content.

MICHIGAN’S WESTERN U.P. TRAIL
#2 REROUTE SUBMITTED
n a September 13th email, the Snow River Mountain Resort announced the resort would no longer allow snowmobile or ORV operation on resort property. The closure eliminated trail access between Wakefield and Ironwood which also affected the communities of Bessemer and Ironwood. Since this time, the Gogebic Range Trail Authority (GRTA) club volunteers found a solution for a pending reroute. Midwest Rider decided to call our friend, Steve Hamilton, who is the president of the GRTA to get his input. At the time of writing this MWR issue (December 1, 2022) this was Steve’s response. Visit GRTA’s website: gogebicrangeta.org.
PICTURE THE PERFECT WINTER ON A
“Attached is a mostly accurate map of the reroute. During the calamity of the trail loss, we had a private landowner, who also works at one of our sponsors where the conversation occurred, reached out to Victor Braun, our board member, and said they’d be open to hosting the trail if it would help and would also be open to an offer to sell a permanent easement, securing connectivity to crucial Old US Highway 2 and the rail bed, which Bessemer Township owns.
We are eager for the MDNR, local governmental entities, and our club to continue pushing toward protecting this vital corridor for good. The road-route section is unfortunate but we believe if you add up the other route’s 7 miles of plowed areas you will find
this 3.8 mile reroute having LESS pavement. Where it does run on the road, there is a wide shoulder and the city of Wakefield expressed sincere diligence in working with us to keep the shoulder snow covered and rideable.
We feel the travel time between Bessemer, MI and Wakefield, MI will decrease by 50%. There will be several stop signs on this road route with a signed speed limit that will be enforced regularly to protect the trail.
What’s more, our trail team led by VP Jerry Nezworski, is working on getting even more of the road-route, off-road, potentially bypassing the cemetery road corner/residences. Much discussion is required, but in the future, this route does appear to be the best shot we’ve ever had at protecting snowmobile connectivity in this difficult dynamic region.
As of 11/29/22 10am EST we do not have approval for this route from the MDNR yet. However, the re-route has been developed and planned alongside our critical partners in law enforcement, MDNR Law Enforcement Conservation Officer, Jennifer Hanson, and Gogebic County Sheriff’s office, Jesse Yesney. They sent an evaluation of the route to MDNR with their findings and commented on the improved visibility and safety this option brings to all users, snowmobiles and roadway.
This route eliminates crossing seven lanes of traffic on US Highway 2, twice. They expressed full support, so we feel, given all other documentation requirements necessary we provided, this should be approved soon.” -Steve Hamilton

BUDGET BEATER
With fuel-injected, 600 power in the most modern Ski-Doo platform available at a price under $10K - the MXZ Sport just might be the ultimate budget beater of the decade.
wo winters back, the editors here at Midwest Rider had the opportunity to grab a pair of then all-new, yet to be released snowmobiles for a weekend of riding and evaluating. At the time, it was the limited edition, turbocharged Mach Z with its Launch Control drag mode, that has us frothing in anticipation to ride. Joining the Mach Z was the MXZ Sport, a model that first hit news a year prior in 2021, when the company introduced the fuel-injected, 85-horsepower Rotax power package.
While the Mach Z had plenty of wow, it was the MXZ Sport that kept putting a smile on our face. Price tag aside, which is reason enough to smile, it was the performance and more accurately, the fun that this sled delivered that left a lasting impression. In more ways than one, this is all the snowmobile anyone will ever need. It’s fast, comfortable, predictable and oh yeah…did we mention fun.
For 2023, the MXZ Sport returns with no changes from the year prior, which is perfectly fine. This is a sled that fits so many different needs – it can be the primary ride for anyone; it can be the sled for someone that’s new to the sport; it can be the spare sled for guests – it’s just the kind of snowmobile that always has a place in everyone’s garage.
Built on the confident and precise REV Gen4 platform and powered by an 85-horsepower Rotax 600 EFI engine, the Sport delivers all the advantages of an ultra-responsive platform and a modern, easy to operate power plant. The freedom of the open cockpit design lets riders easily find their preferred style to ride as aggressively or as relaxed as they want thanks to a chassis that reacts predictably to rider input.
The MXZ Sport features the RAS X front suspension giving riders an advantage over rough trail conditions. Paired with
the advanced geometry of the SC-5M rear suspension, the MXZ Sport offers riders greater comfort in a wide range of conditions. Out back, the proven 129-inch track length blends nimble handling, traction, and comfort into a proven design.
With features like a 4.5-inch digital display, electronic reverse, standard electric start and a simple, choke-less, liquid cooled Rotax 600 EFI engine, the value of the MXZ Sport is simply too good to ignore. The fact is with a suggested retail price of $9,149, no other sled on the market today can offer up a similar package at a price this low.
(All these features are optional)
KEY FEATURES
REV Gen4 Platform: The trail version of the 4th generation REV platform is designed around the rider with a narrow, compact design giving the rider more freedom to move and influence the sled. The more centralized mass (especially side-to-side) make the vehicle ultra-responsive to rider input, delivering more fun per ride.
Much like everything on this sled, the gauge package does everything you need it to without the added frills or complexity of other gauges.
Rotax 600 EFI Engine: 600cc-class fuel injected engine delivering 85 horsepower and outstanding economy and value.
SC-5M Rear Suspension: Designed and calibrated for a smooth, controlled ride for one or two riders and their gear.
RAS X Front Suspension: Flatter cornering and precision handling. Developed in tandem with the rMotion X rear suspension. Wide 43-in. stance and long suspension stroke maximize stability, capability, and comfort.
Motion Control Shocks: High quality, high value gas cell shocks.
pDrive Primary Clutch: Fast and friction-free. Ultra-responsive shifting, impressive RPM consistency, lightweight and maintenance-free.
RipSaw Track: Provides traction in all conditions. 1.25-in. (3.2cm) lugs
Pilot 5.7 Skis: Dual keel/single runner design for aggressive bite in corners and virtually no darting.
Brembo Brake: Fade resistant stopping power featuring braided stainless-steel line for a more direct, solid feel and greater braking efficiency.
Rotax Electronic Reverse (RER)
Standard Electric Start
Compact Trail Seat: Designed for easy mobility around the sled with a wide and flat rear portion for added comfort.
4.5-inch Digital Display: All-digital LCD gauge cluster with flatter viewing angle for an easy to-read info center whether standing or sitting.
Accessory-Ready: One pair LinQ mounts installed on the tunnel.
Everything you could need, nothing you don’t. While the MXZ Sport may seem spartan compared to more popular or more expensive models, it doesn’t feel cheap.
Thousands of miles of trails. Great places to eat and stay. Everything you need for winter fun is waiting on Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range. Visit IronRange.org to download or request trail maps to plan your trip.

FIRST RIDE
2023 ARCTIC CAT ALTERRA 600 BLACK HILLS EDITION
rctic Cat and the fabled Black Hills of South Dakota both rose from the midwestern plains, and at the heart of every Midwest adventure rider, is an explorer wanting to tame every trail running through a scenic lookout, geologic formation and dense forest found there. For 2023, Arctic Cat introduced a new American Legend — The Alterra 600 Black Hills Edition and we were fortunate enough to get an early demo ride on one along with Arctic Cat factory officials.
The 600 Black Hills Edition takes its performance cues from the rest of Arctic Cat’s premier Alterra line, with high-end styling and performance to match its impressive presence. Standard luxury features include LED light accents in the dual halogen headlights, stylized over-molded front and rear racks with non-slip surface, 14-inch aluminum rims and tall 28-inch tires, premium color-matched front bumper and 3,500lb WARN winch.
Traversing terrain tattooed by Mother Nature’s restless winds, erosion and wide-open trail riding, we found they are all an easier task to conquer with the Alterra Black Hills Edition thanks to electronic power steering, lower gearing, an electronic locking front differential, high clearance front and rear lower a-arms and an adjustable handlebar riser system.
TECH
CVTech TrailBloc clutches provide the smoothest take-offs and the performance-spec clutching reacts quickly for pulseracing throttle response, rivaling larger big-bore models. Driving into corners at a spirited pace was very snowmobilelike and seamless with a lack of any weird backshifting in the clutch — give the throttle a little more jam mid corner and you were rocketing out of it. The Alterra bodywork challenges design innovation with narrow styling, enhanced bodylines and simplistic snap-fit body panels to gain quick access to the engine compartment which are all welcome features for the active riding we like to take part in.
A low center of gravity for the rider is an evolution of Arctic Cat’s trademark ride-in performance and leads the industry with 12.8-inches of ground clearance paired to large 28x1014 tires which are constantly grabbing traction. Electronic power steering aids in mastering the corners with fatigue-free handlebar input. Bodywork and color-matched seat design
are narrow where it counts throughout the cockpit — your knees, legs and hips will thank you after a full day of spirited riding. Spacious floorboards provide freedom for your feet to maneuver, and the single header exhaust is engineered down the center of the Alterra, exiting out the rear of the machine to direct heat away from the rider.
Alterra’s performance-engineered chassis also has a low center of gravity and near perfect weight distribution. The double a-arm front and rear suspension geometry, boast 9-inches of travel, and the high clearance lower a-arm designs are positioned on the chassis for the ultimate in additional ground clearance, precise handling and ultimate all-day ride comfort. Class-leading power comes from an equally new engine built at Arctic Cat’s world class facility in Minnesota. Before you bawk at the displacement, the 45-hp, 600cc, single-cylinder EFI engine has a lighter weight, more precisely balanced crankshaft to reduce vibration and provides a quicker engine response than the larger 700cc engine it replaces. (Riding is believing) We applaud Arctic Cat for the new design and answering the call for an overachiever in one of the most popular ATV engine size sales categories.
BEMIS HILL RIDING AT ITS BEST –NORTHERN MINNESOTA
DNR.STATE.MN.US
Located in Beltrami Island State Forest in northern Minnesota, we arrived at the Bemis Hill Trails offering more than 96 miles of riding. The trails travel along pine-covered ridges, large areas of low flatland and near peat bogs. Trails are provided by Roseau County and maintained by the Roseau/LOW Sportsman’s Club and Northstar ATV club. All the 2023 Arctic Cat Alterra 600 models were awaiting us, we would ride Alterra 600 EPS, XT, LTD, Black Hills Edition, Mud Pro and TRV. In the huddle, Pat Bourgeois discusses the plan to grab a handful of trail photos, then join back up as a larger group for a spirited trail ride so we had the opportunity to try out all the models back-to-back.
Our ride couldn’t have been more perfect for conditions. A bit cold (47 degrees) but once riding, you warmed up and there was NO dust, traction was awesome and we didn’t encounter anyone else out on the trails. Before heading home, our last stop was Winners Silo.
The area surrounding Hayes Lake State Park and Beltrami Island State Forest is rich with history. The area was extensively settled during the early twentieth century as European Americans continued to move west. At first, the area was popular with small towns established and loans for ditches to drain wetlands credited.
However, because of the short growing season and inadequate soils, the land was difficult to farm and many settlers went broke attempting to farm and relocated. The Great Depression was the final straw. Many farmers, unable to pay back loans for the ditch construction and their taxes, fell in to foreclosure. In 1934, the US Government began purchasing remaining lands under the Land Utilization Program. The government then restored the farmland to its natural wooded state.
Today, many of the former homesteads and town sites are still found on maps. Examples of the remaining standing remnants include the Winners Silo.
THE TRUTH ABOUT TRACTION
QUALITY STUDS AND WEAR BARS CAN HELP CREATE A BETTER RIDING EXPERIENCE AND HELP
SAVE OUR TRAILS.
he debate over studs and to a lesser degree, high-quality carbide wear bars has ebbed and flowed over the years. In fact, older riders will recall a period of time when there was a serious push to ban traction products for fear they would eventually destroy the growing popularity of paved recreational trails. Fortunately, those days are long past, and the traction industry continues to thrive. However, as track lengths, lug height, and track technology in general continues to improve, there’s a growing contingent of riders who don’t feel traction products are necessary. Additionally, as more new riders come into the sport, many are unfamiliar with the benefits traction products can deliver. Obviously, the category is named traction products due to their ability to deliver increased traction across a wide variety of snow and ice conditions. While this is certainly an attribute that appeals to performance riders, the truth is traction products can help to deliver a more enjoyable and safer ride for all types of snowmobilers regardless of their experience.
Increased Safety
Nearly three decades ago, when the stud ban was front page news, avid traction proponents and the traction industry succinctly thwarted the effort by illustrating the increased level of safety traction products can deliver. From more precise and quicker steering to decreased stopping distances, traction equipped snowmobiles are safer, especially in icy or unpredictable conditions. This is reason enough alone to consider traction products on your sled.
Increased Comfort
With increased control and safety, your confidence will also increase with every ride. When you’re more confident, you are also more comfortable. No one likes to ride with sweaty palms and tense forearms due to icy conditions or a snowmobile that is unpredictable. Traction products can dramatically reduce that uneasy feeling, and in return will have you and your passenger (for you two up riders), feeling more relaxed. Instead of worrying about making that next turn, you’re enjoying the winter landscape.
Less Trail Damage
This last benefit of traction products is one that the “old guard” often wants to disregard. Afterall, for years traction products, especially studs, have been associated with racing and highperformance enthusiasts — the same folks who often take the fall for “tearing up the trail.” However, traction products often reduce the amount of unnecessary track spin that often accelerates trail degradation. With a properly studded track and fresh wear bars, track spin is reduced, and you’ll hold more corners instead of pushing the berm further and further off the trail. The end result is less trail damage, not more.
So, is time to experience more control, more comfort, and more safety on your next ride? Here is just a sample of some of the more popular traction and control products available today. As always, do your research, ask questions, and support those companies who support our sport.
STUD BOY - Deuce Wear Bar
There are a lot of wear bars on the market, but Deuce bar from Stud Boy is one of our favorites. Based on the company’s unique “Shaper” host bar, which features a concave shape versus a typical round bar, the Deuce bar is a dual runner that delivers no darting while cruising down your favorite trail by creating its own groove — versus following others. This one-piece design is also durable and has proven its long life won’t clog
with snow, ice, or rocks, and it also won’t snag obstacles like other dual runners. The Deuce is available in 4.5”, 6”, and 9” of 60º cutting carbide to fit most current snowmobiles. Note: Deuce bars are packaged and sold individually, so order a pair. studboytraction.com
WOODY’S - Gold Digger Traction Master
Woody’s Gold Diggers are the Kleenex of push through snowmobile studs. For decades these studs have proven they are incredibly durable and hook-up time and time again. Featuring a robust carbide tip that won’t “break-out” and holds up to abuse, the Gold Digger has long been the stud of choice for cross country racers. This convenient kit gives you everything you need to ensure your sled hooks up this winter. Not sure what stud length you need, how many, or what pattern to use? Simply visit Woody’s website and check out their Hookup Traction Guide. woodystraction.com
SNOW STUDS – SledShine
With your buggy in the shop getting the full traction treatment from your favorite brand of studs and wear bars, it’s also a great time to give it a shine. Snow Studs is another quality manufacturer of studs and wear bars. More recently they also branched out their offerings when they introduced SledShine, an allin-one cleaner/polish designed by snowmobilers for snowmobiles! Now is the time to shine up your buggy for the season. SledShine contains no abrasives and is safe on all non-porous surfaces including paint, chrome, glass, fiberglass, acrylic, aluminum, plexiglass, plastic, Lexan, vinyl, and even leather.
FAST-TRAC - Air Lite Backers
Aside from the stud itself, another critical component is the backer plate. This plate ensures the stud penetrates the snow or ice surface, versus folding over. Many manufacturers use aluminum backers, but the Fast-Trac Air Lite is a polymer backer that is both strong and lightweight. This is no ordinary plastic, but instead a proprietary DuPont blend that went through many years of development before being released to the industry back in 1998. Not only do they reduce rotating mass, but with several colors available, you can add style to your traction as well. fasttractraction.com
Traction products not only deliver a more confident and comfortable ride for the driver, but for the passenger as well.
BITE HARDER – Carbide Sharpener
Here’s a great way to extend the life of your carbide wear bars and keep that edge for optimum control. With Bite Harder, you’ll enjoy that sure-footed feeling and cornering assurance of a fresh pair of carbide wear bars by giving you the ability to sharpen your existing runners. When used with a cordless drill, you can sharpen your bars anywhere, even trailside. With
IGRIP – Screw-In Studs
A newer alternative to traditional has emerged in recent years that offers reduced cost and easier installation. While these iGrip screw in studs may not deliver the same level of performance of a tradition stud, they are incredibly effective. Designed for a variety of application including automotive, ATV, boots, and of course snowmobiles, they are simple to install and effectively deliver increased grip and safety. For snowmobiles, simply identify your track type and lug height to find the right iGrip stud. Installation is fast and simple, and the overall installed weight is significantly lighter than traditional studs resulting in less rotating mass for increased performance. igripstud.com
All veterans are welcome to enjoy a day snowmobiling, including lodging and meals. Bring your own sled or if you don’t have equipment, there will be snowmobiles, helmets, and clothing available.
POLARIS RIDE COMMAND AND ON-X OFF-ROAD LEAD THE DIGITAL MAPPING SPACE
lope Angles and Avalanche Forecast are Latest On-X Features

THREE IN A ROW …LET’S GO
Come Celebrate Snowmobiling at Midwest Ride-In January 27-28
t might be one of our favorite snowmobile weekends of the year, and we may not even ride one mile. The Midwest Ride-In at ERX Motor Park in Elk River, Minnesota is the world’s biggest and arguably best antique, vintage, and classic snowmobile event. While the January 27-28 event is known for old iron, recently after making the move to ERX where nearly 500-acres of trails, racetracks, fields, ponds, parking areas, and first-class facilities await, Midwest RideIn has become something all snowmobilers can enjoy. From rear-engine antiques to the latest turbo-charged snowmobiles, Ride-In is a gathering of snowmobile enthusiasts who simply love the sport.
This year, Ride-In attendees will discover some significant changes. For starters, the event switches to a Friday and Saturday event, leaving Sunday a chance for participants to travel home. Ride-In has attendees from as far away as New Brunswick, and even Europe, thus the travel day will be welcomed change. Other changes include the elimination of the evening banquet, the addition of a second trail ride, and an all-new retro terrain race geared toward the popular 1990’s IFS snowmobiles.
Of course, there’s plenty of popular returning features as well, including the indoor showroom with the year’s featured snowmobiles, hundreds of silent auction items, a swap meet, the renowned show sled competition, Kids Pro Ice racing, and a Friday evening Ice Breaker party in the showroom.
This year’s featured snowmobile is not brand, like it often is, but instead a “kind” of snowmobile…the beastly and often formidable triple-cylinder snowmobiles. Appropriately themed “Triple Wars,” this year’s event will showcase three cylinder, and even four-cylinder sleds from the 70s all the way through the 90s and beyond. With huge, finned cylinders, bulging triple
pipes, and that unmistakable sound, Ride-In will literally be “buzzing” with multi-cylinder monsters.
Pre-registration for admission tickets, swap spaces, and the judged show are now available online. Save time at the gate and ensure your place at one of the best snowmobile events of the year. Visit mwvss.com to secure tickets and learn more. Here’s the full schedule and just a taste of some of the triplecylinder sleds you might see at this year’s event.
Need some garage art for the mancave? You can find it at the Ride-In swap.
