THREE SOO VIRGINS
EDITOR’S NOTES ’m fortunate to have a career that has allowed me to “work” and enjoy snowmobiling for more than 30-years. I’ve had the opportunity to ride in just about every snow-covered state and province in North America and attend every event, trade show, organized ride, and racing venue in the sport…almost. After being inspired by Rob Hallstrom, Paul Dick, and Rex Hibbert, also now known as the “3 Old Guys,” and their incredible snowmobile trip from Minnesota to Alaska, I decided I needed an adventure ride of my own. While my ride might not be as ambitious, or the destination as remote, I set my sights on Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and the International 500 snowmobile race, better known as the “Soo.” Despite the race being one of the most iconic in the sport, I’ve never had the privilege to see it in person. This year, that’s going to change. I recruited a couple friends to join me on my adventure - Kale Wainer, a long-time arctic cat employee and now owner of the website arcticinsider.com, and Tom Rowland, owner of one of my favorite Arctic Cat dealerships, Thomas Sno-Sports in Ogilvie, Minnesota. Ironically, neither Kale nor Tom had been to the Soo either. I guess you could call us the 3 Soo Virgins. Our plan is to embark on a multi-day trail ride departing from Tom’s dealership in Ogilvie and arriving in time to watch the race on Saturday. Along the way, we hope to make a few stops including the Top of the Lakes Snowmobile Museum in Naubinway, Michigan and a particular Northwoods Wisconsin supper club that has left my stomach rumbling in anticipation of returning since I dined there last. Whether it’s the anticipation of a new destination, a new trail, or simply a new perspective, our trip has rekindled a passion for snowmobiling that had unexpectedly waned over the years. The planning and preparation have reminded me why I love snowmobiling so much. Snowmobiles allow us to see winter in a completely different light than most. From the magic of fresh fallen snow and the connection we feel with the outdoors, to the thrill of the ride, and the comradery we share amongst friends, few things grant us the opportunity to experience adventure quite like snowmobiling. ON-X GRANT PROGRAM CELEBRATES 150 MILES OF TRAILS AND 150,000 ACRES OF IMPROVED ACCESS onxmaps.com
Wherever the trail leads, there’s an AmericInn nearby waiting to offer you friendly service and a comfortable and quiet night’s sleep. And always a place to park your sled.
n-X, the digital interactive mapping software geared toward hunters and trail enthusiasts, recently celebrated surpassing selfestablished access goals for the year. Thanks to every On-X member and a long list of grant recipients, On-X helped to open or secure more than 150,000 acres of land for recreation and restore or build more than 150 miles of trails this past year. That acreage is the equivalent of Zion National Park. According the On-X, the official numbers were 154,688 acres and 255 trail miles. This is no small task and is reason to celebrate given our public lands need stewardship now more than ever. Over the years, OnX has helped fund land acquisitions, restoration projects, easements, wildlife conservation, trail building, and more. This important work keeps our lands healthy and preserves all types of access for years to come. VOLCON BEGINS LOW VOLUME PRODUCTion OF STAG UTV volcon.com olcon, the first all-electric, off-road powersports company, recently announced it has entered low-volume production and is conducting production validation testing for its flagship product, the Stag UTV. The company’s manufacturer, GLV Ventures, is currently building production validation units of Stag LTD, one of four trim levels being offered. Early production units are being put through the last phase of testing with compliance testing already complete, marking a major milestone for the company. The beginning of low-volume production brings the company one step closer to achieving shipments in the fourth quarter of this year as promised. Volcon plans on making initial shipments of approved production units to the US Army Corps of Engineers as part of its recent collaborative research and development agreement. “Our move into low volume production marks a historic milestone for us, and we are looking forward to the coming ramp up and scale of our UTV business segment,” said Jordan Davis, Chief Executive Officer of Volcon. The company has been pleased with early results and continues to chart data to ensure the Stag performs as it was designed to, providing early purchasers with an off-road driving experience like never before. The Stag is showing promising results including 0-60 performance which has been recorded at the top of its class. For more information on the Stag or Volcon’s developmental process, visit volcon.com.

Combined with the 14 2023 Spring TRAILS GRANTS recipients announced in April, Polaris has awarded 25 organizations in 19 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces a total of nearly $250,000 through this year’s TRAILS GRANTS program. “The local riding groups are the backbone of the off-roading and snowmobiling communities,” said Steve Menneto, President of Off Road, Polaris. “The joy they find in riding and the work they put in so that others may have a similar experience truly embodies everything that is special about our industry. The collective impact of these organizations is far-reaching. Polaris is proud to amplify their efforts and celebrate those who are helping to preserve the outdoors for the next generation of riders through our TRAILS GRANTS program.” These 11 organizations were named Fall 2023 TRAILS GRANTS recipients and received awards up to $10,000 each. SKI-DOO SNOW P.A.S.S. PROGRAM SURPASSES ONE MILLION DOLLARS IN JUST THREE YEARS ski-doo.com hree years ago Ski-Doo established the Ski-Doo Snow P.A.S.S. grant program to help support grassroots organizations, clubs, and volunteers who enable all of us to enjoy riding across North America. The program is going stronger than ever as clubs were recently informed of projects selected for funding and total program donations surpassed the one-million-dollar mark. These contributions go directly to efforts that help maintain access, improve safety, and improve infrastructure of our favorite winter playgrounds. Ski-Doo works together with its network of dealers, whom without their support, this initiative wouldn’t be possible to provide funding to volunteer organizations. The grant program offers up to $5,000 in matching funds to community-led projects from associations and clubs engaged in activities that ensure the safety and sustainability of the sport and has funded over 245 projects to date. The projects chosen to receive funding allow hundreds of thousands of riders to continue to enjoy trails and backcountry access across North America. “With the support of our awesome dealer network, the Ski-Doo Snow P.A.S.S. grant program has made an impact in supporting those that are the backbone of our sport,” said Jeremy DoyonRoch, Manager, Global Marketing, Snowmobile and Cross Brand Initiatives at BRP. “Surpassing the million-dollar threshold 14 Midwest Rider 2024
is huge and shows our commitment to generate positive and safe experiences, but more importantly, what these dedicated organizations continue to do to improve trails and infrastructure for all snowmobilers across North America.” Ski-Doo, through its Responsible Rider program, recognizes the importance of preserving our winter playgrounds and helping people understand you can have an adventure in the great outdoors while remaining aware of and attentive to your surroundings and behavior. They also encourage all riders to Take the Pledge and ride responsibly to protect our access for future generations. Stay tuned to ski-doo.com and the Ski-Doo social media channels for updates on Snow P.A.S.S. project progress later in the 2024-25 snowmobile season. Year four of the Ski-Doo Snow P.A.S.S. program will open again for organizations to submit their projects for funding in summer of 2024. To everyone who donates their time and energy to help make snowmobiling possible, Ski-Doo would like to say a HUGE thank you!
MACCACHREN AND POLARIS CAPTURE WIN AT BAJA 1000 polaris.com or the second year in a row, Polaris was victorious at the Baja 1000, as Polaris Factory Racing driver Cayden MacCachren captured his first win of the season at the historic event. In addition to MacCachren’s UTV Overall victory, teammate Brock Heger finished in third place, earning the necessary points to capture the 2023 SCORE UTV Pro Open Class Series Championship. The Baja 1000 victory capped off a dominant first season for the Polaris Factory Racing team, scoring victories at each of the four SCORE events in which the team competed, including three UTV Overall wins. “Today we won a race that most teams dream of even finishing. The Baja 1000 is on every desert racer’s bucket list, and to come away with the win is absolutely surreal,” said MacCachren. “While this win may have my name on it, it’s just as much a victory for my incredible co-drivers Justin and Rhys, along with the entire Polaris Factory Racing team, and our pit and chase team that worked tirelessly over almost 30 hours to make this win a reality.”

FOR THE LOVER OF FOUR-STROKES Smooth, Quiet, and Efficient, Is Your Next Sled a Four-Stroke?
ewind 20-years and you’ll find a snowmobile industry facing stricter and stricter emission requirements. The future of our beloved two-stroke, carbureted engine was about to be phased out all in the name of clean air. Speculation at the time was that two-strokes as a category would also be eliminated, despite cleaner fuel delivery systems — such as direct injection found on E-TEC, or semi-direct injection like the systems found on Polaris and Arctic Cat sleds. For this reason and others, four-stroke engines were thought to be the long-term solution. Yamaha proved a formidable fourstroke engine could work when they unleashed the 2003 RX1, and soon the other brands followed suit with their own highperformance four-stroke offerings. This is not to say four-stroke engines were new to the sport. To be fair, the very first rear engine snowmobiles all employed four-stroke engines. Later on, Arctic Cat arguably introduced the first modern four-stroke snowmobile with their Yellowstone Special, a sled developed specifically to address the possible closure of snowmobiling in Yellowstone National Park. But somewhere along the way, the push for stricter emissions stopped, and the injected two-stroke lives on. However, the four-stroke engine did in fact find a home amongst a legion of dedicated snowmobilers who fell in love with the smooth power, quiet exhaust note with no smell, the long-lasting durability, and the greater fuel efficiency. For this reason, four-stroke powered snowmobiles continue to own a very loyal share of the snowmobile market. If long days in the saddle with a snowmobile that delivers smooth predictable power and is easy on the pocketbook at the pump is your jam, here are some of our favorite four-stroke offerings for 2024.

Polaris Adventure While the Polaris Adventure certainly isn’t new to the sledder fold, the addition of a new four-stroke powerplant in 2023 transformed this trail buggy into a top long-distance contender. Originally inspired by the adventure motorcycle category, the Adventure offers the versatility of one-up or two-up cruising, removable luggage, and the balance of traction and flotation found in its 137-inch rear track. Of course, the star of the show is the ProStar S4, a 1,000cc twin cylinder engine that features three throttle control modes giving you complete control of your riding experience.
Polaris Matryx Beyond the balance of the Matryx platform and the stunning good looks, the star of many Polaris sleds is the 7S gauge with Ride Command. Polaris has been perfecting their digital mapping technology for over a decade, giving them a distinctive advantage over other platforms. Once you experience Ride Command, you’ll wonder how you ever rode without it.

ProStar S4 The new Polaris ProStar S4 is based on the proven architecture that has powered several Polars off-road vehicles for years. To adapt the engine to the cold, Polaris engineers added a dry sump oil system to ensure the engine is lubricated in all types of terrain.
Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS The 2024 Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS was a spring only order option and represents the premium tier of four-stroke offerings from Valcourt. This year the Doo “strokers” made the move to the GEN5 Rev platform and gained more goodness with a more modern look, high-performance LED headlights, and automotive level fit and finish. Power comes on in smooth chunks thanks to the triple cylinder, turbo-charged 900 ACE under the cowl.
Ski-Doo Renegade Enduro For fans of the yellow-horde looking for four-stroke power in season, the Renegade Enduro is our favorite offering. Another GEN5 recipient, the Enduro package is built for trail riders, thanks in large part to the rMotion rear suspension with adjustable Air Control Suspension allowing you to tailor the ride for conditions from the saddle. You’ll also fall in love with the massive 10.25” full-color touchscreen display. 18 Midwest Rider 2024
900 ACE Turbo The smooth ACE 900 has been in the Ski-Doo stable for a number of years and is a perfect example of an engine purpose built to deliver optimum efficiency. Then when more power was asked for, the engineers answered with a compact turbo design that has transformed the smooth sub-onehundred pony triple into a straight-line threat when squeezed with confidence.
Sidewinder SRX LE We’ve said it before, and we will say it again…everyone needs a Sidewinder in their life. An absolute rocket ship, the turbo triple is ridiculously smooth, has incredible trail manners, and then can instantly set your eyeballs into the back of your head with one healthy squeeze. Yes, they do sell the Sidewinder to anybody… get yours before you can’t.
Sidewinder LTX GT EPS All the warp speed of the SRX with the added comfort and good looks found in the LTX GT. If we were heading out for a multiday cruise on groomed trails, this would be our weapon. The addition of Yamaha’s Variable Electric Power Steering (EPS) takes the fight out of muscling the powerful turbo through twisty trails. Power steering also isolates the rider from unwanted handlebar resistance and trail feedback. The resulting light steering effort and handling precision is unrivaled when it comes to long days in the saddle.

998 Genesis Turbo Yaa sure there are turbo two strokes out there thumping their chest, but when it comes to blistering a lake and getting to the watering hole on the other side first, nothing can touch this turbo-charged Yamaha 998. While Yamaha claims a modest 180-ponies (give or take), aftermarket dynos have this beast pegged in excess of 210-horsepower. Hang on!

However, if smooth, predictable, and a perfectly balanced platform is what you crave, the ZR7000 is your critter. The 1049cc 3-cylinder produces a harmonious 135-horsepower, putting it smack dab in the middle of the mid-bore class. NEW SLED NEW RADICAL LYNX SNOCROSS RACER ANNOUNCED
he new Lynx Rave RS racing snowmobile is poised to extend its European championship streak, with a radical new rear suspension, improved ergonomics, and even tougher chassis. The Rave RS has recorded the fastest lap times on each test track it was on earlier this winter, setting the table for what should be another podium filled season of competition. While there is no indication the Lynx RS will compete on this side of the pond, we’re keeping a watchful eye on the technology as it could very well be found on a Ski-Doo in the very near future. Here’s a taste of the make-up of the new Lynx terrain racer.

NEW rCTRL REAR SUSPENSION
New rCTRL rear suspension.
The design of the rCTRL (center-to-rear-linked) rear suspension focused on enhancing rollability and increasing damping capacity, enabling the Lynx Rave RS snowmobile to achieve faster laps on snocross tracks. Durability has been improved, and maintenance has been simplified.
Renewed LFS Racing front suspension.
The revolutionary rCTRL rear suspension is based on a unique coupling system where the center arm borrows damping force from the rear arm through the shock absorber to the center arm area. This unique solution provides the center arm with increased damping power without an excessively stiff center shock.

The LFS Racing front suspension of the Rave RS racing sled uses new, taller spindles. The change goes hand in hand with the new rCTRL rear suspension, bringing 27 mm more ground clearance under the lower A-arm. As part of the reform of the sled’s suspension, the swaybar has been removed, which contributes to the sled’s weight savings.

RENEWED RADIEN-RS CHASSIS The Rave RS 600RS E-TEC has also experienced significant reforms in terms of the structure of the chassis.
