The recent release of overall snowmobile sales for the 2024 season by the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has prompted a few phone conversations this summer from “worried” snowmobile enthusiasts. After what many would call a very dismal winter season, the sale of new snowmobiles slipped, dipped, or in some cases sagged from previous years. Total overall snowmobile sales for the season fell 9.7 percent to a grand total of 112,650 units.

To the casual outside observer, numbers like these would be cause for alarm, and plenty of internet prognosticators, bench racers, and beer drinkers put on their best “chicken little” costume on and proclaimed the sky was falling and the end was near. Let me be the first to tell you…it’s not.

While total global sales of nearly 113,000 units pales in comparison to the numbers of the 90s when sales exceeded 250,000 units annual; or of the late 1960s when estimated sales reached a half-million, there’s plenty of reasons to be optimistic. Obviously, things like a poor winter, rising costs, and limited time amongst growing families to enjoy the sport had and will continue to have an impact, and we all have a role to play in helping to overcome those barriers to entry. The manufacturers will need to continue to look for ways to manage and mitigate rising costs. The clubs, associations, and enthusiasts like us need to take personal responsibility in keeping interest in the sport vibrant by introducing snowmobiling to others, be it family or friends. And of course, like all good snowmobilers, we are and always will be eternal optimists. While it didn’t snow much last winter – “just wait till this year, it’s going to be a humdinger.”

But there’s another reason, a more powerful reason why I’m confident in the future of the sport of snowmobiling…FOMO. Fear of missing out is real. I know, because I’ve been inflicted by this powerful force when it comes to snowmobiles for more than 40-years. As I penned information on some of the biggest fall shows, grass drags, and swap meets in this issue, I felt it – I must be there… and you know you do too.

More importantly, when the cold and snow return this winter, the forces of FOMO will be even stronger. We will need to ride, we will need to plan that trip, and we will need to experience the incredible feeling only a snowmobile can deliver. See you at the shows.

POLARIS INTRODUCES FIRST OFFROAD ELECTRIC CHARGINg NETWORK IN MICHIGAN

olaris and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) celebrated the launch and grand opening of an electric off-road vehicle charging network in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Just under a year after Polaris received a Mobility Public-Private Partnership & Programming (MP4) grant through Michigan Office of Future Mobility & Electrification’s (OFME) program to develop and maintain an off-road trail charging network in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the off-road charging network is officially open. This first-of-itskind off-road electric charging network supports around 100 miles of scenic off-road trails in the Upper Peninsula.

“It is an honor to mark the opening of this unique off-road electric charging network developed in partnership with the state of Michigan and the local communities along this trail system. Polaris and Michigan are connected in our efforts to bring exciting innovation and the latest technology to outdoor recreation,” said Andrew Chasse, Vice President of Strategy and Partnerships, Polaris. “I’d like to thank the Michigan Economic Development Corporation in particular for allowing Polaris the opportunity to play a role in such an important initiative for the state and this standout milestone for the powersports industry.”

“Michigan is known as a Make-It State, leveraging our incredible talent pool that brings together innovation, grit, determination,

and visionary products of the future,” said Justine Johnson, State of Michigan Chief Mobility Officer. “Working in tandem with Polaris to launch an electric off-road vehicle charging network in the Upper Peninsula, exemplifies how working through public private partnerships bring ideation to fruition in every corner of Michigan. We applaud Polaris’s effort to support the growth of a reliable EV charging infrastructure in one of Michigan’s favorite ORV riding destinations.”

Michigan’s MP4 grant supports the modernization of the state’s mobility offerings and its massive outdoor recreation industry as it transitions to more electric and technology-enabled vehicles. In June 2023, Polaris announced it had been selected to receive a $700,000 grant to develop and maintain an off-road trail charging network in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Free to use, the EV charging stations enable the use of various electric off-road vehicles or other trails-approved electric options on the public trail system. There are four installed electric vehicle charging stations on state-designated ORV trails in the woods of Ontonagon County. The four chargers are deployed in Ontonagon, White Pine, Bergland and Greenland.

The 2024 Michigan Trails Experience Survey is now open to everyone in hopes of garnering constructive input. The DNR is looking for feedback about trail users’ experience on state-designated trials. People can share their input on things like biking, hiking and snowmobiling.

According to Michigan DNR Parks and Recreation State Trails Coordinator Tim Novak said it takes five to 15 minutes to complete. “To get feedback from our users about how and why they use our trails and where we can improve. Another area is keeping up with market trends and seeing how people recreate, changes over time,” Novak said.

INTERNATIONAL SNOWMOBILE CONGRESS WORKS FOR THE FUTURE AND HONORS THE PAST AT 56TH ANNUAL GATHERING

ore than 420 snowmobile enthusiasts from both the US and Canada gathered for the 56th International Snowmobile Congress (ISC) held in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The week began with an exciting car and motorcycle tour to beautiful Door County and back. It was a fantastic day filled with many laughs and smiles.

On Wednesday, FOSPAC (Friends from Snowmobiling Political Action Committee) hosted their annual fundraiser. This year’s event, the “Snowmobile Olympics,” featured a thrilling lineup of challenges including curling, pin the snowmobile, carbide, and spark plug challenges, and snowmobile races on a custom-crafted wooden snowmobile with wheels. The funds raised will support pro-snowmobiling candidates for the US Congress, enabling them to participate in informational sessions and networking opportunities.

Overall, the conference was filled with trade show participants and a diverse range of informative breakout sessions and meetings. Topics ranged from groomer tracking systems and social media tips to leadership, future snowmobiles coming into the market, tourism, groomer and trespassing round tables, committee meetings, and the highly anticipated ACSA meetings.

Friday’s Groomer Reception had a fun twist this year, putting everyone’s groomer operating skills to the test. A challenging maze was placed on the front blade of the groomers, requiring participants to carefully navigate a ball through it while being timed. This new activity was a hit with everyone, even those who had never operated a groomer before were able to join in and have a blast!

Oneida Nation Dancers showed us and explained their dances that were passed on from generation to generation at the “offsite” event.

The “3 Old Guys” were guest speakers Friday morning. They talked about their 38-day adventure of a lifetime traveling by snowmobile from Minnesota to Alaska!

The 56th ISC concluded with a banquet where numerous awards were presented to recipients from Canada and the US. Congratulations to these award-winners:

ACSA Snowmobiler Of The Year -

Frank Slawiak of Vernon, New York,

ACSA Snowmobile Family Of The Year -

All the AWSC ISC committee members and volunteers, including many members from Wisconsin’s youth leadership program KAOS (kids and adults on sleds) and members from the Next Gen Riders.

The first snowmobile was on display, built in 1924 by Carl Eliason. His Granddaughter, Jona Eliason was able to tell everyone the story of him building it and all sorts of history.

WI TRAILS

6 MUST-EXPERIENCE

WISCONSIN ATV TRAILS

ev your engines, get your adrenaline pumping and see the woods of Wisconsin from an all-terrain vehicle. Wisconsin’s ATV and UTV trails offer spectacular views of natural scenery, matched only by the spectacular thrills you’ll experience whether you ride for a day or for a week. Go off-road in a side-by-side or four-wheeler by day, then explore plenty of lodging, dining and after-ride activities for your overnight excursions with your crew. Here are six of our favorite, must-ride Wisconsin ATV trails.

Chippewa County ATV Trail

Like challenging hills and valleys on your ride? Head for Chippewa County in Northwest Wisconsin. Massive retreating glaciers carved an ATV-lovers paradise here. The Chippewa County ATV Trail cuts through a scattered string of 33,000 acres of county forestland that makes for heart-pumping adventures. What this 19-plus-mile Wisconsin ATV trail lacks in length, it makes up for in grit. Steep climbs and dramatic drops make it a Wisconsin ATV trail favorite.

Kewaunee County Riverview ATV Park

Just south of Door County, the Riverview ATV Park offers 20 miles of trails for riders of all abilities. When you’re done riding for the day, this historic community on the shores of Lake Michigan offers plenty to see and do. Forty buildings here are on the National Historic Register and the community’s maritime past can be explored at the Kewaunee Historical Society Museum in the original 1875 jail building.

Cheese Country Trail System

ATV through the Driftless Area of Wisconsin on the Cheese Country Trail System, which rises and falls rhythmically through Iowa, Lafayette and Green counties. Though much of Wisconsin was flattened by massive glaciers during the Ice Age, this region escaped that grinding action and remains a ripple of breathtaking ridges and valleys. Built on an abandoned railroad line, this Wisconsin ATV trail extends south and east for 47 miles and includes a 440-foot trestle that spans the Pecatonica River. When you’ve worked up an appetite, menus in this neck of the woods feature an abundance of cheese-filled dishes.

Iron County ATV Trails

Several clubs and local government officials have partnered to create an impressive 250-mile network of ATV trails in Iron County, with riders even welcome to share trails with snowmobilers in the winter. Riders will see gorgeous Northwoods nature scenes, lakes and even waterfalls. The trail system is so well-developed that you can visit nearly every major town in the county on an ATV, with plenty of opportunities along the way for food, gas and lodging.

Tuscobia State Trail

The 70+ miles of Tuscobia’s ATV trails are a can’tmiss for riders. It’s one of the longest rails-to-trails routes in the state, taking you through Wisconsin’s scenic Blue Hills. Picture tree-lined corridors with bald eagles soaring overhead and water views crossing multiple rivers. The entire route runs from Park Falls, passes through the Flambeau River State Forest, then through southern Sawyer County with several communities along the way, ending in Birchwood. A couple of campsites make perfect stopovers for swapping stories under the stars and a good night’s rest.

Just make sure to check trail conditions before you head out, because they can and do change quickly. For information on ATV and UTV registration, trail maps and trail systems by county, trail passes and other helpful ATV / UTV riding resources, visit the Wisconsin ATV/UTV Association (WATVA) website.

Washburn County ATV Scenic Tour

More than 100 miles of trails and 35 points of interest await Wisconsin ATV riders in Washburn County. Here, you don’t have to wonder what river you’re crossing or what the massive fish posted on the trail represents–the signs will explain everything. The Washburn County ATV Scenic Tour takes the mystery out of history, informing riders of notable homesteads, landscape features and many other fun facts to know and tell.

HOT PANCAKES, GREAT TRAILS, AND THE THIRD BEST CHILI IN TOWN

The Mille Lacs Drift Skippers serve up some of Minnesota’s best trails – winter and summer.

hen it comes to riding snowmobiles, last winter was a disappointment to say the least, and not just for riders, small businesses that rely on winter tourism were crushed. From little to no traffic, poor ice fishing conditions, and any other winter-based activity -nearly every hotel, lodge, bar, restaurant, and other businesses that rely on winter tourism suffered.

Fast forward to summer, and the riding spirit is back and stronger than ever. This past spring Midwest Rider joined Thomas SnoSports, the staff from ArcticInsider and members of the All-Terran Vehicle Association of Minnesota (ATVAM) for a day ride on the trails maintained by the Mille Lacs Drift Skippers located in Isle, Minnesota. With perfect weather on tap, an open invitation, complete with a new Arctic Cat Alterra 600 ready to go, and the chance to rekindle our ride enthusiasm, we were in.

In short, it was a great day, and the trails were fantastic. The Drift Skippers maintain some of the best snowmobile trails in

Minnesota, and the same can be said for their ATV and side-byside trails. Things kicked off with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Isle Fire Department, and we wrapped things up with a big burger, a cold drink, and the third best chili in town at one of our favorite central Minnesota cold beer and thick burger destinations - Mugg’s.

The ride was just what we all needed to get the summer season kicked-off. Here’s a look at our day of fun.

The day started with a fantastic pancake breakfast hosted by the Isle Fire Department.

Tom Rowland of Thomas SnoSports offered up a new ATV for us to ride, and we were reminded of just how good the Thief River buggies are, as evident by Tom’s smile.

Cold drinks, great burgers, and chili that makes the podium has made Mugg’s one of our must stop destinations in the area.

There are both Class 1 and 2 trails in the area, and we took advantage of the technical aspects of the ATV specific routes. Several groups of mixed rides took in the trails, and the Red Top Loops accommodated all of us with ease.

INTERNATIONAL SNOWMOBILE HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED

he International Snowmobile Hall of Fame located in Eagle River, Wisconsin, recently announced its 2024 class of inductees. This prestigious honor is bestowed upon the incoming class of annual recipients in recognition for their achievements for the sport of snowmobiling. Here is a brief look at this year’s inductees.

Ross Antworth – Trail and Program Developer, New Brunswick

Snowmobiling since 1972, Ross began his dedication to the sport as a volunteer. He assisted his local snowmobile club, the Keswick River Trailblazers as their vice president and president. His involvement quickly gained momentum, going from local to the provincial level. In October of 1996 he was elected to the New Brunswick Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (NBFSC) Board of Directors as

the Zone 4 Director. In 1997, Ross was appointed by the NBFSC as their General Manager and held this position until retiring in 2021. One year prior to becoming GM for the Federation, their fiscal year revenues were less than $350,000. Twenty-four years later and one year prior to his retirement. Ross presented the board of directors with a year-end audited financial statement of $4.95 million in revenue. The growth was credited to the numerous relationships formed, successful legislative measures and consistent lobbying done provincially and on a federal level over the span of more than two decades, of which Ross played a huge role. Mike Hetteen – Volunteer and Club Organizer and Industry, Minnesota

Snowmobiling has been a part of Mike’s life since he was born. Growing up in the “Polaris family” created the opportunity for him to learn and experience the sport from its early beginnings into what it is today. His childhood memories of Polaris go back as far as 1967. It was this very early era of snowmobiling when his father, Allan Hetteen would bring him along to all the major snowmobile shows, give a very young boy the task of checking out the booths of other sled manufacturers and report his findings to his father. By the early to mid-seventies, Mike worked many hours after school at his father’s Polaris Distributorship preparing parts to ship to dealers. As an adult, Mike worked for Polaris thirty-six years in all, for the first four years as a District Sales Manager for NW Minnesota and the Dakotas. These were challenging times for a young DSM and his dealers due to low snow years and an energy crisis resulting in many dealers and sled manufacturers going out of business. Fortunately, Polaris persevered. The next thirty-two years Mike worked in Purchasing holding various positions with focus on supplier management, product development and procuring chassis and powertrain components in North America, Europe and Japan. Mike retired from Polaris in 2016. (To read more visit ishof.com.)

Mark and Kent Lester – Publishers and Journalists, Ontario

Mark and Kent Lester are avid snowmobilers who discovered their favorite winter passion in the late 1970s, riding the trails thousands of miles across North America in pursuit of that next remarkable story or iconic photograph. It is this unbridled dedication to the sport of snowmobiling and their talent for

writing that lays claim to the success of Supertrax Media. In 1988, Mark and Kent Lester took advantage of an opportunity to combine their passion for snowmobiling with their skills as journalists, becoming co-founders of Supertrax Magazine. First published in late 1989 and only in Canada, they quickly evolved to a national publication known as Supertrax International Magazine by 1991. This rapid expansion was due mainly to the Lester brother’s partnership with renowned writer, photographer and publisher, the late CJ Ramstad. Mark worked alongside CJ shooting virtually all the photos for the magazine. This partnership launched Supertrax as the first true international snowmobile publication. Soon, other publishing opportunities were added to the bother’s portfolio as they expanded into the television market by launching “Snow Trax TV.” As the business continued to grow, by 2010, Trax Media Inc. was formed combining their publishing, television and digital entities under one umbrella. It is a family business that includes the next generation of Lesters, both Mark’s and Kent’s sons and their team of professional writers, photographers and videographers. Dave Newman – Volunteer and Club Organizer, Wisconsin Dave has been involved in snowmobiling since he was 16 years old. Starting out on the family farm riding his 1972 John Deere, he joined his local snowmobile club. Little did he know just how much his involvement would turn out to be not only on a hometown level but also county, state, national and even internationally. Still very young, he was club president for many years, then moving on to the county level he became the Clark County Director for the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs (AWSC). He was elected Executive Director which eventually took him to AWSC Vice President. Four years after that Dave became President of the AWSC, a position he held for nine consecutive terms, 2014 to 2023. He was the longest running president in AWSC history. He spent endless hours at the state capitol testifying on legislation for funding increases, trail rule changes, GPS trackers in groomers and worked with the DNR on snowmobile safety training. Dave, working with AWSC lobbyists, also testified on issues to protect snowmobilers’ interests in the state budget every year. Perhaps Dave’s most significant legacy as Vice President and President was his tireless pursuit in getting Wisconsin’s Snowmobile Trail Pass legislation passed and implemented. Brenda Welsh – Volunteer and Club Organizer, Ontario

Brenda Welsh was the quintessential snowmobiling volunteer at the local, regional, provincial and national levels. She was truly a representative of the many whose past and present volunteer contributions keep organized snowmobiling alive and well in Canada. As a 34-year snowmobiling volunteer from Huntsville, Ontario, Brenda made history in 2010 when she took office as the first female president of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC). In 2012, Brenda was honored by the Government of Canada as a recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for two decades of volunteering for organized snowmobiling in Canada. Brenda also served many years with the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations (CCSO) where she volunteered as vice president and secretarytreasurer. She also served as vice president then president of the National Trails Coalition. Starting out as a club volunteer in 1987, Brenda worked her way up through the presidency of both the Huntsville based Du-Ya-Wanna Snowmobile Club and the Muskoka Snowmobile Region before moving on to the OFSC, the CCSO and the National Trails Coalition. Brenda brought her love for snowmobiling to every position as well as a wealth of knowledge and leadership skills. (To read more visit ishof.com.)
