EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK CHANGING IT UP IS A GOOD THING KALE@MSPNINC.COM ast winter, I chronicled the ultimate ride of three longtime adventurer friends, Rob Hallstrom, Rex Hibbert and Paul Dick, who named themselves the “3 Old Guys.” They embarked, and completed, a 4,000+ mile adventure traveling from Grand Rapids, Minnesota to Fairbanks, Alaska via three equally prepared Arctic Cat snowmobiles.
L
I wasn’t the only one intrigued with the commitment these fellas were going to make, as nearly 40,000 people followed the 3 Old Guys Ride to Alaska Facebook page and hung on daily to read their journey updates and view their photos. Reliving the 3 Old Guys ride with a few of my longtime riding friends a handful of weeks ago, our conversation turned to how our group continues to ride the same trails, in the same areas, year-after-year. Although the riding is always enjoyable, we all agreed, this season, we should explore a new-to-us adventure ride together. Since then, a plan is being pulled together to ride across three states toward the end of January. The four of us will start in Minnesota, ride across Wisconsin, and end in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan in time to watch the SOO I500, an enduro race we’ve always wanted to attend.
Year-Round
(L-R) Paul Dick, Rob Hallstrom and Rex Hibbert Little did I expect, all the talk and planning of this new trip has reinvigorated my excitement for snowmobiling. I’m even looking at my snowmobile with a new fondness (apologies to my wife), as I prepare it for the distance ride by adding accessories for storage, warmth and navigation. If you want to change things up this winter, I suggest you go for it. Change is a good thing. If you need ideas for new events to attend, start by flipping to the back of this magazine and read through the two and a half page event calendar. You’ll surely find a few new events to attend out of the 80+ that are listed across Wisconsin. If you have a fun adventure ride planned this winter, drop me an email. I’d love to hear about it, and if you chronicle the ride, I’d love to share it in the pages of Wisconsin Snowmobile News.

PRESIDENT’S COMMUNIQUE
FOUR WAYS ISMA PROMOTES SNOWMOBILING By: Lori Heideman
H
ave you heard of the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (ISMA)? They are an organization representing the four snowmobile manufacturers. According to their website, they promote snowmobile safety. They promote a lifestyle activity of snowmobiling. They keep accurate statistics. As well as reporting the growth of the industry and the positive economic impact snowmobiling has throughout the world. 1. National Snowmobile Day - ISMA promotes a world-wide day of snowmobiling which took place at the end of October. This is fashioned after snowmobile day in Sweden. For the past forty five years, Sweden has celebrated snowmobile day. It was intended to create a family fun day that included many partners within the snowmobile community. It was meant for the clubs to work together with the alliances and dealers to create a fun event for all to participate in to kick-off the new snowmobile season. ISMA makes suggestions for this event to include vintage or custom sleds, or to get the groomers out and displayed. They also suggest holding safety classes or maintenance clinics on snowmobiles and trailers. Many clubs also include trail maintenance into this day to get the season kicked off. Clubs, county alliances and dealerships participate in this day, dealerships host open houses with a club presence and offer food to their customers and club members. ISMA will help out with these events. They offer grants to the clubs and alliances to host these events. You just need to go to their website to apply.
8 WSN - www.awsc.org
2. Snowmobile Safety Week - ISMA is also responsible for safety week in January, they set January 13 thru 21, 2024 aside to observe safety in snowmobiling. They have safety videos as well as safety information on their website. All this safety information can be used in safety classes and education. 3. Take a Friend Snowmobiling - ISMA is also responsible for the Take a Friend Snowmobiling campaign that takes place for a week in February, this year, the week is February 10-19, 2024. This campaign is meant for all snowmobilers to find a friend that has not experienced snowmobiling and take them out for a ride. The hope is to get these new people interested and perhaps they will purchase a sled and get involved. All to help this sport grow and prosper. 4. Take the Pledge - And lastly, ISMA is behind taking the pledge. The pledge is designed to ensure snowmobilers protect existing riding areas and trails for current and future generations and landowners who give us access to their property. The pledge was created to make snowmobilers aware of the importance of recognizing the ownership of land we ride on and the impact we have on our landowners. It also draws attention to awareness of legal riding areas and making sure all within the sport are aware of the rules. Thank you landowners for allowing us to use your property to ride on. It is so appreciated. If you are interested in finding out more information about ISMA, or what they do for our sport, please look on their website. As stated prior, they have so much information on safety, take a friend snowmobiling, taking the pledge, and next year when it comes to national snowmobile day, check to see if there are grant opportunities available for the snowmobile community. See you on the trail!

ello snowmobile friends. By the time you read this, hopefully most of you have the majority of your trails ready to go and only have a few loose ends to wrap up. That late October snow really got a lot of us thinking snowmobiling. So last month I introduced the VP challenge for everyone to find a new member for their club. Hopefully many of us succeeded, and all those new members will start showing up at meetings. Now’s the time to hook them for life. I’d like to share a personal story that I bet many of you can relate to. Well over twenty years ago, at our January meeting I noticed a guy about my age that had been at the last couple meetings but just kind of sat by himself. I went over and introduced myself and welcomed him to sit with several of us at our table. In February we went on a club snowmobile trip. Two couples with our four kids rented a cabin together, and we had a blast along with the club. Talk about outside your comfort zone. Two families staying together and we hardly knew each other. To make a long story short, we have maintained a dear relationship with this family and have enjoyed many, many club activities together. Not only the fun stuff, but the hard work too. Now to the moral of the story. Several years into our friendship, this guy, confided in me that his old club had basically fallen apart and he was looking for a new club. He said it was his third, and LAST meeting, if he didn’t meet and connect with some people. How many of us have seen new members come and go? I think many can say they have, and you have to wonder if maybe something could have been done differently to help get them involved. I’ll be the first to admit working on trails, sometimes showing a new member how we put our trail in added a whole new dimension to the work. Most of the time it paid great dividends! New members often bring new ideas and can reinvigorate slightly burnt-out members. I know they have for me. So, to any of the new members out there reading this, welcome aboard! Old and new, let’s all get ready to ride!

YOUTH PERSPECTIVES
NEW KAOS MEMBER ATTENDS WORKSHOP By: Macy LaGesse, Chippewa County Youth Rep.
I
’m Macy LaGesse, Chippewa County’s Youth Representative. I’m 14 years old, in 8th grade and belong to the Bloomer Sno-Hawks Snowmobile Club where I help as an assistant secretary and volunteer for countless events. Snowmobiling has been a huge part of my life, thanks to my parents and family who introduced me to drag racing when I was 5 years old. Being active in an organization (AWSC) that loves and appreciates snowmobiling like I do is truly amazing. The dedication of its members became more evident after attending the fall workshop in La Crosse for the first time. Here’s my account of all the “firsts,” including being accepted as a KAOS member and Youth Rep. I arrived Friday afternoon, checked in, and looked forward to the evening social hour where I met new people and could tell immediately the atmosphere was alive and cheery upon entering the large convention hall. The costume contest was very enjoyable and the Miss Snowflake contestants answered a question as a part of their judging. Saturday was a busy day attending meetings, breakout sessions and the banquet. I started my day by meeting the KAOS members and leaders, then listening to the guest speakers at the Directors Meeting. There were many good topics discussed, and many I had never thought about which furthered my learning.
12 WSN - www.awsc.org
After the Directors Meeting, KAOS met and discussed some of the subjects and attention turned to the toy and blanket drive hosted by KAOS for children in the hospital. There was an impressive donation turnout and all members took a portion of the items back to hospitals around their counties. You can learn a lot from the breakout sessions. We visited Platteville’s Clean Snowmobile SAE team room first. This group shared great information about their clean snowmobile builds and how they compete against other schools. Hearing them talk so passionately about their snowmobiles made me happy for the future of the snowmobile industry. A fantastic, and entertaining, banquet wrapped up Saturday evening with “Of the Year Awards” and the crowning of AWSC’s new Miss Snowflake. Sunday morning, the Directors Meeting had club members in attendance from all over Wisconsin. I couldn’t have been happier to attend the fall workshop. Getting involved with the AWSC was the right decision and this association has some great leaders. From here, I’m positive it only gets better! Thanks again!

MEET YOUR NEW MISS SNOWFLAKE By: Brianna Crotteau
H
ey everyone! My name is Brianna Crotteau, and I am truly honored and thrilled to be crowned your 2023-2024 AWSC Miss Snowflake! I am from Rice Lake, Wisconsin, and recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with a degree in Agricultural Business and Dairy Science. This past June, I was hired as a full-time Dairy Plant Project Coordinator in River Falls. I also work part-time at Gehl Acres Farm in Cameron, Wisconsin. At the farm, we milk 120-registered Holsteins and tend to about 850 acres of crops. I love cows, and I love my time at Gehl Acres with the Moen and Huth Families. When I’m not working, you can find me out in my deer stand, on the lake, at the gym, or enjoying some beautifully groomed snowmobile trails with my family and friends. I have been involved with snowmobiling my entire life
and I am very thankful for the opportunities I’ve had to participate in this awesome sport. My love for snowmobiling began as soon as I was big enough to fit into my first helmet, which was about three years old. I was gifted my first snowmobile when I was fifteen, and I thought that was the best day ever. From that day on, I have become more involved with volunteering and lending a hand to the Chetek Snow Flyers. I have helped with a lot of trail work including clean up days and signing, working with landowners, and my new favorite, grooming trails. Some of my other involvements include decorating our groomers for parades, fundraising efforts for the club, open house events and member recruitment. This year is going to be so much fun, and I can’t wait to visit many of the AWSC clubs across the state. Each AWSC club and member has a story to tell, and I look forward to hearing those stories while representing the
AWSC as the 2023-2024 Miss Snowflake. I would also like to thank my awesome support team. My mom, dad, sister, family, friends, the Chetek Snow Flyers and Barron County have been by my side since the very beginning, and I would not be where I am today without their endless support. Thank you to all the Miss Snowflake Sponsors: Donahue Super Sports, Braap Wraps, Floe International, DSG Outerwear, K+M Motorsports, Unique Signs and Designs, and Tyler’s Backcountry.

First-time snowmobilers can’t quit talking about how much fun the ride was. When you take a friend snowmobiling, remember this may very well be their first time on a snowmobile. Chances are, your normal ride would seem like a marathon to an uninitiated friend. Let your friend enjoy that first day of snowmobiling. Again, enjoy the ride, make it relatively short, make it simple, and remember that it is always a good idea to feed your guests.

Did You Know, Arctic Cat had a 4-stroke snowmobile in the 1970s?
A
lways a visionary, Edgar Hetteen saw a future for a small, low-powered snowmobile that focused not on performance, but fun. In 1975, Arctic Cat built a limited number of sleek snowmobiles called the Trail Cat, but early prototype photos show the unit badged with the name, Trail Scooter. Power came from a 10-horse Briggs & Stratton 4-cycle one-cylinder engine and only 229 were made, as the Trail Cat was part of a
long-term test to see how this type of sled would go over with the public. Several dealers got one to test and give input on how the Trail Cat worked. The Trail Cat featured a small undercarriage made mainly of steel with aluminum swing arms and running steel on track clips with no slides. There also were steel springs with no shocks. The track was special, and small, too. It used a 13-inch wide by 90-inch long segmented plastic design with 18 segments, each 5 inches long and held together by locking rods. Each segment featured an Arctic Cat logo molded into it. Power was the main issue with Trail Cat, which looked fast, but wasn’t. It came with a 100-mph speedometer, but reports claim it topped out at 25 mph.
WILDERNESS SNOWMOBILING ON THE GUNFLINT TRAIL It’s a wild place here. You could see moose, wolves, fox and deer...but not too many other people. Trails start just outside your cabin door. All services, food and lounge within a mile. Lakeside units available for large or small groups. Groomed trail system, connects to state trails and the Lake Superior loop.

FALL WORKSHOP
AWSC BRINGS THE FUN TO LA CROSSE
T
he AWSC brought the fall workshop to La Crosse, Wisconsin in late October. The AWSC Fall Workshop activities for attendees are many starting with Friday night’s favorite Halloween mixer where many well thought-out group costumes were showcased to celebrate the holiday while a live DJ provided entertainment and smiles for the crowd. Saturday’s event schedule was a packed one, starting with the general session meeting greeting a full conference center of enthusiastic snowmobilers. A variety of guest speakers were on-hand whose full presentations can be found on awsc.org. The afternoon was filled with several workshop learning classes, and an incredible banquet capped the evening when Of the Year awards were presented, and the excitement to see who would adorn the new Miss Snowflake crown was revealed. The Wisconsin snowmobile comradery of this event is incredible and can be experienced through many hospitality rooms, and seen in the generosity of giving to the silent auction and toy drive hosted by KAOS. If you truly want to know what’s happening with Wisconsin snowmobiling, attend an AWSC event. You won’t regret it.
The Clean Snowmobile Challenge students from the University of Wisconsin – Platteville led a breakout session to discuss their snowmobiles and the program.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MIKE HOLDEN
H
ere is a summary of the officer and committee reports from the Directors Meeting held on Sunday, October 22, in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
PRESIDENT, LORI HEIDEMAN Lori reported on things she has been working on. She, along with Stormy Hovey and Sam Landes, have been working with the DOT on how they can partner with the AWSC in the event of a winter emergency. She attended some Ride Safe Program events in northwest Wisconsin promoting helmet safety for kids. She talked about her desire to appoint an ad hoc committee to look at our “Of the Year” awards and how to improve the program and scoring the applications. Lori talked about helping KAOS with their bylaws. Sam Landes, Melissa Rhodes and Lori developed a power point presentation about the AWSC that will be available for directors and reps. Lori also asked Don Hamilton to develop a power point presentation explaining the AWSC Commercial sponsorship program. Both presentations were shared with the directors and are available on the website. VICE PRESIDENT, GREG ROSCIZEWSKI Greg thanked the presenters who held workshops on Saturday. He then talked about his Vice President challenge, and how everyone should work on getting one new member. SECRETARY, SUE SMEDEGARD As a member of the SRC, Sue explained how in spite of not being able to fund all the projects this fall, the program is not bankrupt. She reminded everyone of the SNARS/GTS training that was available the next day by Zoom. That session will be recorded and be available in the future. She reminded the directors to take some AWSC stickers along for your clubs and share all the information from the meeting.
Mike reminded everyone that you should be having annual elections for your county’s director and rep and to notify the office of the results. If a new director or rep is elected be sure to include their contact information. He recommended everyone sign up for DNR notifications. OFFICE MANAGER, STORMY HOVEY Stormy reported we had 413 attendees and served 285 at the banquet. She then presented three bids for the 2026 Fall Workshop. A vote resulted with the Holiday Inn in Manitowoc being selected. She talked about the need for clubs to provide a list of their officers and contact information. She recommended clubs send that information in to the office annually. We need to have up to date contact info for the office and for the DOT to use if necessary. Information about the winter meeting to be held in Washburn County in January was provided. MISS SNOWFLAKE, BRIANNA CROTTEAU Brianna was introduced as the new Miss Snowflake. Brianna talked about her background and interests and thanked the Miss Snowflake sponsors. AWSC COMMITTEE REPORTS SNOWMOBILE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY, TIA FUCHS Tia thanked Don Hamilton for putting on the workshop. This year’s applications will be available on the website on November 1, and are due January 5. NOMINATING, DAVE NEWMAN Anyone interested in running for office should contact him or a committee member for more information. They will be looking for candidates for Treasurer. Larry reminded everyone to get out early to brush and sign trails. He recommended meeting with your groomer operators pre-season to go over the equipment and make sure you have the necessary safety items on board, including a first aid kit. He reminded operators to turn off-road lighting off when traveling on or near roads. Make sure your GTS units are working and after going over your system the first time, check to be sure you were located inside of the geofence. After reviewing the program financials, he pointed out trail passes brought in $4,239,000, in addition to the registration and gas tax revenue. We have seen an increase in non-resident and non-club member trail passes over the past couple of seasons. This past year four counties exceeded the $900 per mile cap on supplemental. 27 counties went into supplemental for a total of $3.5 million. $2.7 million was available for projects with $4.5 million in requests. The committee recommended working with the DNR to increase the amount of the
supplemental payment in September to 75% instead of the 50%. They also suggested looking at increasing the user fee rates. BYLAWS, JOHN BROZEK / DAVE NEWMAN The committee is looking into making a couple of changes. The first is to change the dates of our fiscal year to match what is being used, July 1 – June 30. A discussion was held on the rules for membership and voting delegates. They reviewed the existing relevant bylaws and asked for input from the directors. The committee will draft the changes and bring it back to the directors at the January meeting. ENVIRONMENTAL, DAVE NEWMAN Dave reported on the regional property planning being done by the DNR. 8 regions have been completed, with 3 being worked on and 5 more to come. To sign up for notifications go to the DNR website under property planning. We need input from the local clubs for the individual properties in these plans. MEMBERSHIP, JIM MARKS Jim recommended clubs set up their own membership committee to help recruit new members and report back monthly. He recommended using the yellow poster and advertising in local periodicals and newsletters to get your name out in the public. The membership contest will take place again this year for clubs increasing their membership and commercial sponsors by 10%. YOUTH, KAOS MEMBERS They used their fall leadership weekend to work on creating bylaws for the group. They are looking for new activities and locations for their events. For their service project they collected stuffed animals and blankets for hospitals. They are working on adding KAOS information to the AWSC show booth. SCHOLARSHIP, THERESA BRAUDT Theresa thanked everyone for their support at the silent auction. They raised just over $5,000. There will be 14 scholarships awarded this year with the deadline for applications on January 5, 2024.

PROMOTIONS/PUBLICITY, KATE FUCHS Kate thanked everyone who helped with the booth at the Wide Open Wisconsin show. They are looking for some way to show the new power point at events. The trailer is available to reserve through the website. AUDIT / INSURANCE, WALLY THILL The audit committee met recently, and everything is in order. They will meet again in December before the next meeting. With the cost of equipment and buildings increasing, Wally reminded clubs to make sure they have the proper coverage in their policies. FUNDRAISING, DEAN WANDEL Dean reported 42 tickets were not sold for this year’s raffle. The committee is looking for input on what could help sell them. Possibly adding more smaller prizes instead of the $10,000 prize.

SAFETY & EDUCATION, BRIAN WOELFEL The committee is working on a signing workshop for next year. He reported there were 16 fatalities last year, with an average age of 54 and only three had taken a safety course. Remember to mark your trails as if you have never ridden them. MISS SNOWFLAKE PAGEANT, CHELSIE ENGELSON Chelsie thanked Rachyl for the fantastic job and congratulated Brianna. She thanked the sponsors and judges and she hoped to have more contestants next year. LEGISLATIVE, SAM LANDES Sam reported both bills, AB98/SB105 (business signs on state property) and AB130/SB136 (increasing the supplemental cap to $1500 per mile) have been passed by the Senate and are waiting to be scheduled by the Assembly. (Note: The Assembly passed AB98/SB105 on November 7). Once passed they need to be signed by the Governor. Sam talked briefly about trespassing. It is a complicated issue with no simple answer. Always looking for ideas and will continue to work with DNR law enforcement to see what we can do to help. He reminded everyone to sign up for legislative and DNR notifications and review the DOT 6-year plan to see the highway projects scheduled for your area. The committee will start the discussion on how to increase revenue for the program. But he reminded everyone it took several years to get the current trail pass program in place, and it is working. That increase in revenue funded a lot of bridges and new trails and we need to be cautious THE 2024 MXZ THEX-RS 2024 MXZ X-RS when proposing any changes.

ACSA continues to work to eliminate the reference to a 12” snow depth in winter travel management plans and are watching a proposal that would lock up 5.8 million acres in Montana, which is part of the Biden administration’s 30x30 plan to lock up 30% of the US land & waters by 2023. ACSA arranged a meeting between several state leaders and the manufacturer’s snowmobile ambassadors at Hay Days to educate them on issues we are dealing with at both the state and national level. INDUSTRY NEWS REMEMBERING BELOVED WINTER WEATHER AMBASSADOR AND METEOROLOGIST JOHN DEE JOHNDEE.COM Photos by: Shawn Malone
A
s this issue of WSN was going to print, we received word of the untimely passing of one of our favorite meteorologists, winter weather lover, John Dee, on November 14, 2023. While reasons of his passing are unknown as of this writing, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. John and his forecasts were treasured by all of us who love winter. Below, is a bit of history regarding John taken from his popular website, johndee. com -WSN Editor “Well, like most kids, I just loved the snow. Not just for the day’s off, but for the beauty and fun it brought to the neighborhood. I can remember looking outside at night, watching the flakes gently fall down through the beam of the spotlight, hoping it would never stop. As I got older, my love of the snow only grew and I believe it even lead me to my career choice. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago (Park Ridge) and spent my whole life there until time came to go away for college. My first stop in the land of higher education took me to the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Snows there were plentiful in the mountains, but void in the high basin where the university is located. While there, I decided on my major, which they did not have, so I headed back closer to home and to Purdue University where I received a bachelor’s degree in meteorology. I spent a year in Washington D.C. working for the National Weather Service, but for the past 18 years have been a private meteorologist working for myself and providing custom weather forecasts.
a year and as much as 390″ in 197879. The summers are also very pretty, with low humidity and temps in the 70s and low 80s. I continue to perform my meteorological duties, but am able to do them from our home in the beautiful Keweenaw. In November of 2002, I was introduced to a beautiful woman named Nora, and in June 2003 she moved to the Keweenaw to be with my dogs and I. On October 9th of 2004, Nora and I became husband and wife. TIME TRACKS
Grand Prix Not for Everybody
T
he early 1970s was both an amazing and unstable time in the snowmobile industry. The sudden popularity boom of the sport saw nearly anyone who could weld, fabricate, or assemble a simple snowmobile, jump into the fray as a “manufacturer.” As a result, the landscape was littered with snowmobile models, many of which barely lasted a couple of years at best. In hindsight, this vast array of snowmobiles has become a vintage collectors dream, especially for those looking to find, restore, and show a sled few have ever seen before. For most of these manufacturers the formula was very similar. Develop a tunnel and/or chassis, mold a fiberglass hood, and outsource the remainder of the components from vendors who were busy building and supplying parts for other “larger” manufacturers. For this reason, it wasn’t unusual to find similar engines, clutches, chain cases, suspensions, and tracks on many different makes and brands.
This was the case early on for Boatel, a Minnesota based manufacturer who was known for its houseboats, pontoons, and trailers. Located in Mora, Boatel looked to diversify its summer lineup with snowmobiles, and like other makers at the time, their first model, the Ski-Bird, was a collection of known snowmobile parts resulting in a rather “traditional” sled for the time. But with the market bursting with makers and options, Boatel took a bold step in 1970 when they decided to build the “ultimate” snowmobile named the Grand Prix. Unlike the “build what we got” mentality that most small manufacturers were employing at the time, Boatel went all-in with the Grand Prix, delivering every possible option imaginable, all wrapped up in a sleek design and all aluminum chassis. In fact, the Grand Prix was so over the top that the marketing campaign embodied the fact by boldly proclaiming it “wasn’t for everybody.”
“…it was far more expensive than any other snowmobile on the market” Debuting in 1970, the Grand Prix was more of everything…except weight (at least that’s what the marketing brochures claimed). Claims the Grand Prix was 60-pounds lighter than other competing wide track models may have been grossly exaggerated based upon ride reports from the time. The Grand Prix was quieter; had more traction, thanks to a 20-inch wide Gates polyurethane track; stopped quicker; had more top speed; more fuel range, thanks to a built in auxiliary fuel tank with a total capacity of 5-gallons; and of course more convenience. Yes, this was the sled of more…in every way.
TAKE CONTROL

WWW.STUDBOYTRACTION.COM 30 WSN - www.awsc.org
Perhaps the most unique feature of the Grand Prix was the butterfly style steering, with pull levers for both stopping and accelerating. There was under seat storage, a padded dash, electric start, full gauges, lighted switches and even a cigarette lighter… smoke ‘em if you got ‘em. Every Grand Prix also included a custom fit cover that was color coordinated to match the rich gold and chrome color of the sled. Yes, the Grand Prix was rich in style and performance, and the Boatel factory was targeting riders who wanted the best of everything. Just like owning a luxury car, Boatel was betting that upper echelon of snowmobilers would want the same in their sled. With a retail price of $1,850, it was far more expensive than any other snowmobile on the market by as much as $500 for an equally competitive model. It looked good on paper, and the sled looked equally great on snow, but the performance level failed to live up to expectations, and while some sledders did plunk down the added cash for the luxurious Grand Prix, the culmination of poor winters, constantly improving models from the much larger manufacturers at a fraction of the price, and a failure to live up to performance expectations saw Boatel exit the snowmobile business in 1971. Glarco Inc purchased all remaining Grand Prix models from Boatel and renamed the sled the GP Mark II (due to trademark issues). Glarco sold the GP until the 1975 model year when presumably the existing supply of GP units dried up and the oil embargo of 19731974 put a pinch on the entire industry.

SPIRIT LAKE NORTHWOODS RIDERS CELEBRATE 40TH ANNIVERSARY Submitted by: Joann Hanson northwoodsriderss@gmail.com Spirit Lake Northwoods Riders

elebration will take place January 27, starting at 1pm at Zondlo’s Bar in Rib Lake. Open to the public. All are welcome! Better yet, you can snowmobile right to the door (if trails are open). Don’t miss this fun day. Some original members will be there. Please thank them for all their hard work over the years! The snowmobile club came about in 1984. It was formed from the Spirit Lake Rustic Riders. The Spirit Lake Rustic Riders snowmobile club had disintegrated a year or two prior. Name was then changed to become: Spirit Lake Northwoods Riders. The original members were Al Schmudlach, Ron Eisner, Gary Becker, Matt Troiber, Jeff Mauch, and later Rick Schmitz and area local bar owners including Roger and Dawn Becker, Jim and Lu Mauch, Fritz Moore SR., Neil and Isabel Olkives, and Leroy and Audry Schmitz. As the club grew more people had joined. Back in the day there was no groomer so they had to break a trail to Timm’s Hill (the highest point in WI) with snowmobiles. The original drag was

probably an old bed spring. What ever it took, club members would show up to get this done. We also had outside help from other clubs such as the Prentice Bushbenders Snowmobile Club. Even though our club is smaller than some, we are very proud of what we’ve accomplished and all the hard work of trail maintenance. We groom a section of WI Corridor 21 and the famous “Rail Trail” around Ogema. It’s a fast old railroad bed converted to snowmobile use that’s a blast to run. Our current officers are President: Rick Schmitz, Vice President: Wayne Troiber, Treasurer: Royce Dieter and Secretary: Joann Hanson. Our Trail Boss is Jeff Mauch and three board members. We currently have 22 miles of trail in three different surrounding counties Lincoln, Taylor and Price that we sign and maintain (that all connect together) and we partner
ACCESSIBLE AFFORDABLE with the Prentice Bushbenders for the use of a groomer. We groom 8 miles in Price County including Timm’s Hill and the aforementioned “Rail Trail” by Ogema. Over the years we have tried many fundraisers including a Poker Run, a Brat Fry, and a Bobber Run on the river but what we have found the best and most unique to our club is our delicious All-UCan-Eat Fish Fry. This meal includes battered fish, homemade fries, coleslaw and rye bread. With a variety of many delightful desserts and hot coffee that’s all included. For this snowmobile season our Fish Fry will be held on Good Friday at Zondlo’s Bar in Rib Lake. Please join us for a warm meal and help support our local club. We have a great rapport with the community and it shows with massive turnouts. Mark your calendar! Like most snowmobile clubs, we are always looking for new members, especially younger members, as they are the future of our sport we love so much. If you’re interested and would like to join our team, please contact us and someone will gladly talk to you about it.

CLUB FLASHBACK
50 YEARS OF THE GRAND MARSH PATHFINDERS SNOWMOBILE CLUB Submitted by: Lisa Ems - Secretary, grandmarshpathfinders@gmail.com / 608-5479261
T
he Grand Marsh Pathfinder Snowmobile Club was formed on December 11, 1973. They currently cover trails in Lincoln, Adams and New Chester townships, and have about 36 miles of trails; 34 miles which are state funded, and 2 miles of club trail. The state of Wisconsin incorporated the Grand Marsh Pathfinders Club on January 17, 1974. The club was created by the local businesses and a county worker. Members on the initial board of directors were Donald Dean, Joseph Ems Senior, Jeannie Ems, Jerry Kotlowski, Anita Shaske, Bob Shaske, Harold Wolfert, Robert Wood, and Harriot Wood. Joseph Ems Sr. was an Adams County lawn/ snow care worker and the first club president. He remained the club president for approximately 20 years. His wife, Jeannie Ems, created the club’s first patch, which became the logo for the club. She is an honorary member of the club and has been a member for fifty years. Jerry and Marcie Kotlowski were the owners of the Sportsman Bar, and held the club meetings. According to the Register of Deeds, Jerry was the initial registered agent. Bob and Arlene Shaske of Shaske Welding provided welding for the club projects. Anita Shaske was the first treasurer and secretary. Harold Wolfert was the owner of Triangle Acres, selling and installing silos and barn cleaners with a passion for volunteering in the Grand Marsh community. Robert and Harriet Wood of Robert Wood Sales sold Vikings and Wild Cats snowmobiles and their parts, and had gas and oil available for purchasing. Joseph Ems Sr. did most of the grooming of the trails along with Dave Ferge. They started grooming trails that were about 5 miles, and progressed to 34 miles. The club’s first trail ride in 1973 started in Grand Marsh and headed to Brooks. Joseph Ems Sr. used bedsprings to groom the trail. Later, he assisted in creating pipes and angle iron to use as a drag and the club purchased two Mercury snowmobiles to pull it. Later, the club purchased an Oliver Cat, and Harold Wolfert, Dave Ferge, and other men helped in placing wooden blocks on the track to groom the trail. Then the club obtained a Bombee with drag. Later, that was traded in for a 1994 Tucker. Dave Ferge did most of the repairs/maintenance on it. Later, that was traded for a 1999 Tucker. Dave Ferge went with club president, Tim Ems, and the club county representative, Todd Stammen, to Idaho to look over the 1999 Tucker and purchased it. Grand Marsh Pathfinders have provided many community events over these 50 years. Dave Ferge (AWSC 2023-2024 Volunteer Groomer of the Year) was 36 WSN - www.awsc.org
also involved in making a cross-county racetrack in the 1970s. In 1976 through 1979, the club, along with Grand Marsh Lions Club, held a cross country snowmobile race each year starting, and ending, behind the Sportsman Bar. The races were held on groomed trails in New Chester Township that were on the club trail and the trail made on other land just for this annual race. Between Dave Ferge as trail groomer and the club’s equipment, some of the safest and most enjoyable trails in Adams County have been provided for snowmobile riders. The club participated in the Badger State Olympic Torch Run. The Badger State Torch Run Sled Ceremony took place on Jan. 7, 1996 at Cedar Shack. The club held an annual Labor Day Ball Tournament from the early 1980’s to 2012. A softball tournament over Memorial Day Weekend occurred once in 1994. In the 1980s, the club began dance fundraisers in July which ended in 2001. The dance date was moved to October (Halloween) which ended after October 1997. A spring fling dance was held in 1991 and the name was changed to January Thaw Dance in 1992 and then back to Spring Fling Dance in 1991 until 1999. Then the dance followed their Groundhog Antique Snowmobile Review from 1999 to 2001. From February 1999 to present day, the club holds the annual Groundhog Antique Snowmobile Review on the first Saturday in February at Connell’s Cedar Shack in Adams. In May 2015, Joey Seehafer, designed a logo for a first annual car
show to be held in June 2015. The antique car show continues to the present day and takes place on the second Saturday in June, in Grand Marsh, at the Harold Wolfert community park. In 1991, bars and local businesses were to become members of a club if a snowmobile trail passed nearby. Also in 1991, the club began hosting raffles of guns/snowmobile items/ cash/bonds/ certificates/ grills/ mini refrigerator, cooler/soda/beer/meat, and other donations which occurred each year either separately or along with an event. They also do silent auctions, paddles, plinko, and put the ticket in the buckets. The Grand Marsh Area Development, in 1996, asked the club to set up a craft section on their property and help with the food line in which the club did. Corn N Tater Craft show began August 1996 to present date. The flea marketers came to the club when the VFW no longer wanted to run their sites at the Grand Marsh Corn N Tater. So, the club began the setup and overseeing of those sites to the present date. In 2021 the club no longer was needed in the food line so the club stopped because most of the club members were already working somewhere on the grounds. They have the annual Grand Marsh Corn N Tater craft/flea market sites that are currently being held on the clubhouse property. December 1994 they began co-sponsoring/supporting Grand Marsh Area Development with money donations for games and prizes and members volunteering to help in The Children’s Christmas, Easter, and Halloween parties which continues to the present date. Dec 2023 37
In October 2008 thru 2011 the club assisted the Grand Marsh School PTA in the Haunted Hayride Night held at Roche- A- Cri State Park sponsored by Friends of the Park. The club purchased Snowmobile Discovery Books for the Grand Marsh 5th & 6th graders that Debbie Stevens, Brandon Stevens, and Scott Kotlowski presented on snowmobile safety starting in 1995 to 1997. Starting in 1995 the club pledged money to the Nancy Carlson Muscular Dystrophy ride until she quit a few years ago. The club occasionally held spring raffles, donated money to Alice Malarkey bookworm club, participated in the 4th of July parade, held or assisted in the snowmobile safety courses, and held attendance lottos over the years. In 1995 the club held 2 days in two months for the IGA brat sale each year until 1997. Throughout the years the club has done poker runs to different businesses either by snowmobiles or buses. The
club held an annual dinner at a supporting business establishment. In 1994, instead of having the landowners at the club member’s annual dinner, the club began giving a coupon to the landowners to use at an event which continues to the present date as an appreciation token. The club members have the dinner privately or in a designated area to present date. A place to hold the club meetings was a challenge. As it has been said the first meeting was at the Sportsmans Bar, County Road E. Grand Marsh. Once Jerry and Marcie Kotlowski sold the bar the meeting place became a challenge along with the date and time. In January 1991, meetings moved from the bar to the New Chester Town Hall at 7 pm. In January 1994, meeting changed to the second Sunday at 1pm at the New Chester Town Hall. February 1995, it was voted to have the meeting time changed to 4pm at Patrick’s Lake Resort (so the club did not need to have someone present to open it up like the Town Hall). Keeping the second Sunday of every month. No meetings in May, June, July, and August. October 1995 next meeting and following will be the second Sunday of each month at 11 am at the New Chester

Town Hall. January 1995 it was decided to have a newsletter each month to be sent to all members to use as a reminder or to inform those that do not make it to the meeting. Pathfinder News! In 1996 the club began holding the meetings at a business sponsor members’ pending space. By having the Pathfinder News, members received the minutes with the reminder in location of the next meeting. The club meetings rotated throughout each year so each business sponsor member obtained the club business. The club wanted a clubhouse to put the equipment and supplies in and also to hold meetings and parties. Most of the equipment and supplies were stored on Joseph Ems Sr’s property being the initial president and did the grooming along with Dave Ferge. Joseph Ems Sr. put the trail signs up either by himself or with assistance over 25 years. In 2007, the club purchased a lot from Harold Henning who donated the second lot to the club for a clubhouse and storage building. In 2010, the building began construction. They built it with a drive through bay, an office, a bathroom and a sign shop with storage. Three-quarters of the building is heated. Finally, May 18, 2019 open house occurred. First meeting June 2019 in the clubhouse. However, with inside construction and organization of equipment underway the club still held meetings at the business sponsor member’s establishment until May 2020 when all future meetings occurred at the clubhouse. Scheduled meetings every month on the second Sunday at 11 am except Mother’s Day and if Easter falls on the second Sunday. Then the meeting is held on the third Sunday. No summer break. The club began holding parties at the clubhouse. Currently they have about 46 members who follow the motto, “united we trail, divided we fail.” Club President is Tim Ems, since 1995, Vice President is Ken Trunk, Secretary is Lisa Ems, Treasurer is Mary Payne (an officer over 30 years), and Club Representative is Todd Stammen. Local businesses have club forms or interested riders can talk with a member about joining. The club currently has six businesses supporting them which gives the businesses advertisement in the AWSC magazines and Adams County Snowmobile Trail Map. The club’s existence would not have been possible without good members volunteering, supportive businesses, all the landowners, and public community attendance/participants.

LUMBERJACK MEMORIAL TRAILS (LMT) CELEBRATES 50 YEARS! Submitted by: Cal Schmidt, LMT Secretary
I
n the 1960’s, several small snowmobile clubs began establishing trails in Forest County. Although the trails were not long, nor did they meet today’s requirements, they were still trails, and they were rideable (we had a lot of snow back then). Like the rest of the clubs in the state during this time period, trails were “groomed” with bedsprings and home-made drags pulled behind snowmobiles. It was evident by 1973 that recreational snowmobiling was becoming very popular. It was also becoming a major driver of economic activity during the winter months. The smaller clubs would need to invest more time and money to keep the trails in good and safe condition. It quickly became evident to each of these small clubs that they did not have the financial resources to do this on their own. In January of 1974, the Logrollers, Carter Brush Monkeys, Hill Toppers, Sugar Bush Snow-Mo-Wheelers, and Freedom Winter Weasels met and agreed to form and fund one organization to groom and take care of the approximately 100 miles of club trails. This meeting resulted in the birth of Lumberjack Memorial Trails, Inc. The LMT has been in existence since April, 1974. The five small clubs turned all equipment over to the LMT. The trail system financing and operation functions fell under the direction of the LMT Board of Directors. The LMT is now a 501c3 organization and we are proud to be a 100 percent volunteer organization. We are also very proud of the 100plus mile LMT trail system. It is our belief that this system offers the recreational snowmobiler one of the safest, best signed and groomed trail systems in Wisconsin. The LMT Club has updated equipment on a regular basis. Today we operate three groomers. They include a 2020 and a 2023 Tucker
40 WSN - www.awsc.org
Terra 2000, and one New Holland tractor. We groom seven days a week depending on snow conditions. We have two groomer barns and a fully equipped work shop. The club members perform most of our equipment service and repairs. Groomers and brushing volunteers average 3,000 - 4,000 hours a year. The LMT club is one of five clubs that make up the Forest County Snowmobile Council. We work cooperatively and in conjunction with the Forest County Forestry Department as all state funding reimbursements flow through county coordinators. The five clubs in Forest County maintain over 400 miles of trails. Happy Anniversary to the LMT club!!! Please help us celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2024!!! YOU’RE NEVER TOO YOUNG! Submitted by Ann Swanson NWRRVSC Communications & Membership Chair

hat does an 80-year-old man and a 11-year-old boy have in common? They are both vintage snowmobile enthusiasts. Meet Bruce McMillin and Eli Yoder. Bruce has been interested in vintage sleds for years. He is one of the founders of the Northwest Relic Rider Vintage Snowmobile Club in Hayward, Wisconsin. At the age of 7, Eli bought his first snowmobile. He saved his birthday and Christmas money and eventually was able to buy a 1979 Arctic Cat Jag for $100. Eli had heard there was a club for snowmobilers who had vintage sleds. He contacted Darlene Mela, owner of Beechmore Restaurant in Stone Lake, WI, who was able to make the connection for Eli. With that connection, Eli became the youngest member of the Northwest Relic Rider Vintage Snowmobile Club! Bruce and I sat down with Eli Yoder and asked him about his interest in relic snowmobiles. How did you get interested in the older sleds? My mom’s relatives have a lot of old vintage sleds and I always liked them. Have you been able to join the Relic Riders on any of their vintage rides? I try to go to at least one of their Thursday’s Ride to Lunch. The first one I went to was great! They gave me a trophy and a sweatshirt. It was one of my best days ever. I would go to more but I have to go to school. I wanted to participate in the Run4Fun held in February. Just as soon as we got to Beechmore where it started, my JAG quit and wouldn’t go. Fuel pump problems, I think. Have you had to do any repairs on your JAG? Well, I did have to change the fuel pump and the choke. I got the fuel pump out of an old lawn mower so it didn’t cost any money. Another guy of the Relic Riders, Lamont Berendes, sent me a speedometer, a dashboard and some other stuff. That was neat! Have you put on a lot of miles this year? Yes. Probably five miles or so riding on our property. My dad starts my sled. It is great on a 10-degree day. I don’t have hand warmers. The suspension isn’t great but it is a comfortable ride.
Anything else you’d like to say? YEAH, HAVE FUN! A vintage sled is never dead! So, there you have it! You are never too old or too young to ride a vintage sled because after all, IT’S JUST FOR FUN! If you are interested in becoming a member of the NWRRVSC, Contact Ann Swanson (Swanie) at ann.m.swanson@att.net or (715) 634-9052 Website: www.relicriders.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/ relicridersclub
What is your favorite trail? Probably the lakes! Do you think you will buy another vintage sled? No, I am looking for a new sled! Do you have any advice for other kids that want to purchase an older sled? Yes! The Arctic Cat JAG is a good machine! It is not very tippy. It rides close to the ground. I really think it is better than a Skidoo! Dec 2023 41
