A JAM PACKED MARCH ISSUE
Idon’t want to believe it, but I have to — this is the last Wisconsin Snowmobile News issue of the season, and it’s a packed one! When you flip to the next page (6), make sure to read the President column by Dave Newman. After writing 91 of them for the pages of WSN, this particular one will be his last as President of the AWSC before retiring. I’d like to thank Dave for his dedication to making organized snowmobiling better in the state of Wisconsin, and have personally enjoyed working with him on the content and messaging shared in this magazine.
Dave also covered two stories in this issue — the first was a meeting report from his involvement with the Snowmobile Recreation Council (SRC). If you aren’t familiar with the SRC, for good measure, a bit of background information was included to get you up to speed. The second story included Dave’s involvement with the Badger State Snowmobile Torch Tour and its exciting 13stop journey starting in Wausau and ending at the famed Derby Complex in Eagle River for the World Championship races.
The middle of this issue contains a handy guide to the AWSC’s 1,200+ commercial sponsor listings spread over 72 counties. Make sure to patronize these businesses throughout the year who support organized snowmobiling and powersports in Wisconsin. To become a commercial sponsor, or see a digital listing, visit awsc.org. One of my favorite sections every year in the March issue is reading-up on the latest snowmobile models released by all the OEMs! Hopefully this section is a starting point to educate you, so informed spring order purchase decisions can be made. It’s important to note, we covered new models from Arctic Cat, Polaris and BRP, but Yamaha is visibly absent. This wasn’t on purpose — at the time of printing, Yamaha’s information had not yet been released. To make up for it, please visit mspninc.com to read the digital March WSN version which will include information on the 2024 Yamaha offerings. And while you’re there, catch-up, or reread, any of the seven WSN issues you may have missed this past season.
I was fortunate enough to be asked to attend the January Wisconsin Military Ride in Eagle River on behalf of Wisconsin Snowmobile News. You’ll find my story in the back quarter of this issue. This is quite the event, and one of the best veteran appreciation events in the state! I’d personally like to thank all the veterans who attended, allowing me the privilege to meet you, and I sincerely thank you for your service.
Rounding out this issue is a whole lot of Club News, a couple great Club Flashback stories and a thorough list of Wisconsin snowmobile club events. Thank you to all the clubs and volunteers who take the time to submit this information every season! Your contributions add to these pages and represent how truly incredible it is to snowmobile in the great state of Wisconsin.
Take care - Kale

MY LAST COLUMN — THANK YOU EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH THE AWSC
By: Dave Newman
As I started to write this, I realized this is my 91st column. No wonder I’ve been having trouble coming up with new topics to write about lately. Thank you, Kale (WSN editor), for giving me the space to make this last special column a little longer.
A LIFETIME OF INVOLVEMENT
As I look back, my involvement in organized snowmobiling all began in 1972 with a John Deere 400 snowmobile and joining my club at 16 years old. I’ve been involved in my club and snowmobiling ever since. Little did I know how much that involvement would turn out to be! It included 15 years as club president and numerous years as an officer on the county level before moving up to Clark County AWSC Director in 1996. In 2008, I was elected AWSC Executive Director, a position I held for two years before being elected AWSC Vice President for four years. In 2014, I was elected as president, an office I have held for the past nine years. Now, I’ve decided it’s time to step down and let Lori Heideman lead you as president. So, for this month’s column, I’ll reflect on my time as president.
THANK YOU MENTORS
I couldn’t look back at these years without recognizing all the mentors I had along the way. While there were many, I need to name a couple. Locally, I appreciate the support I got from the preceding Clark County Director, Howie Frane, and how he promoted the AWSC during his time. I need to thank past AWSC president, Donna White, for her guidance during and after her time in office. Most of all, I need to recognize and remember former Rock County Director and friend, Morris Nelson, who we lost in 2016. Without the knowledge he shared with me, and his encouragement, it is unlikely I would have ended up as AWSC President.
WORKING TIRELESSLY TOWARD AWSC SUCCESS
I’ve always said, as president, I dealt with something regarding snowmobiling every day throughout the year, and over the years, that covered a lot of different topics. After working tirelessly during my time as vice president on what we called CAP/STEP legislation that brought about the trail pass, it was passed in 2014. I spent a lot of time that first year as president working with our office and the DNR to figure out how to implement the brand new program. Much of my time was spent spreading the word about how it would work and answering questions from many club members. At the time, many had their doubts and some insisted it would never work, but that has been proven wrong. It has done exactly what it was meant to do which was to increase the amount of revenue into the state snowmobile program — the benefits of which we are now reaping. The increase in revenue resulted in funding of over 1,600 miles of new trail in the past four years and provided an increase in the amount of dollars available to clubs for the work they do. And it increased the number of club and AWSC members from 26,000 at the time to over 41,000 now.
Over the years I have testified numerous times at the Capitol and before the Natural Resources Board on several bills and issues. Some of the other bills I was instrumental in passing included increasing funding per mile from $250 to $300, eliminating the 40 foot rule for 2-way traffic on snowmobile trails near roads and covering the cost of the GPS trackers through the program. I have also worked with our lobbyist to protect snowmobile interests in each state budget and legislative session. I have enjoyed working with our lobbyist and attorney during my time as president and am proud of the work we have accomplished on behalf of our clubs and membership.
Beyond the many conventions, workshops and director meetings that I have helped plan and participated in, I have been involved in many other AWSC events over the years. Including several AWSC VIP Rides, Snowmobile Friendly Community award presentations and Badger State Games Torch Tours. I have been honored to represent the association at many International Snowmobile Congresses and ACSA Washington DC Fly-ins. Over the years I have represented AWSC at many DNR meetings and study groups which resulted in developing relationships with DNR personnel and representatives from many other user groups. I have attended every Snowmobile Rec Council meeting during my time in office, both as a member on the council and after I wasn’t reappointed. I have been a supporter of the KAOS program from the beginning and was instrumental in setting up the vintage/history committee.
WORKING WITH GREAT AWSC MEMBERS
I had the privilege to work with two great office/business managers. When I was elected, Lori Pohl asked me to promise I would stick around until she retired. I did and enjoyed working with her very much. When she did retire in 2019, I worked with the executive board to find her replacement. We hired and helped train our current manager, Stormy Hovey, who is serving us very well. I also was instrumental in hiring Don Hamilton as our association coordinator. Don has been very helpful and hopefully this position will take some of the load off those who volunteer for an AWSC office in the future.
It has been a pleasure to work with all the AWSC Executive Board members for these years, especially, Sue Smedegard and Lori Heideman, who have been involved for all of my nine years. One of my goals when elected was to involve the entire executive board in more of the decisions in the day-to-day operations of the association. I also threw a lot of information at them and hopefully educated them about many other issues involving snowmobiling. I also need to thank all of the directors and reps who participated in our meetings and the guidance they have provided. They all have been great to work with and many of them will be friends for life. And I need to thank all of the clubs and their members for their support over all of the years. I have met more snowmobilers than I can ever count and I appreciate every conversation I had with them.
EDUCATION THROUGH WSN AND FINAL THANK YOU
I also tried to educate our members with important information through my articles in WSN. I never claimed to be a professional writer, but hopefully I have accomplished that. I took on this job by committing whatever time it took to do it right, and I take satisfaction in feeling it was a job well done. I want to thank everyone who helped me along the way, especially my wife Brenda, for her support and for being my sounding board and proofreader. While this chapter of my involvement is over, I’m not going away. The AWSC and snowmobiling have been a huge part of my life and will continue to be. I will be here in the future to help the AWSC in whatever way I can.
6 WSN - www.awsc.org WISCONSIN PRESIDENT’S COMMUNIQUE
THE AWSC DECISION PROCESS DEFINED
Lori Heideman – Vice President
Have you ever thought about who, and how, decisions are made at the AWSC level? Have you ever asked your director or rep what their role is in the decision making process? Some issues are brought about by the executive board. Obviously, these issues are usually something the DNR or another partner is asking for, or looking into. The executive board usually discusses these and then bring them up in a committee meeting or in front of the entire board of directors.
If the issue is something a particular committee wants to discuss, they will make a recommendation to the directors. We will discuss the issue and the executive board will act on that discussion and recommendation. Sometimes, there is a lot of discussion and sometimes the discussion is a matter of agreement. Typically, controversial issues will have more lively discussions.
In the matter of workshops, conventions and directors meetings; the office brings a few bids to the meetings. The directors discuss the locations. Questions are asked and answered and then the location is voted on by the directors. The directors meetings are similar, only the office usually does not bring bids. These meetings are usually brought to the directors by a county association or a club wanting to host them. They are discussed and then voted on by the directors.
The AWSC does not get involved in electing a county director or rep. We will, or have been known to, attend county meetings to help counties who are deciding on new directors or reps. Especially if they are struggling to get someone involved. We can answer questions that may help with someone volunteering. So, If you want to get involved and have questions, please ask. Being a county director or rep can be fun and rewarding. This past weekend, I had the pleasure of riding with many club members. We held our annual club trip up north. There were many different riding abilities amongst us. We tried something a little different and met up with another club who invited us to ride with them. They provided guides and a great lunch stop. We made many new friends and rode many new trails. But as I reflect on a great weekend for our two clubs, I also think about how deadly the weekend was. I think about those involved in the numerous accidents that occurred.
We need to make better choices when we are out riding. Ride within your abilities, save the drinking for after the ride, and ride right. Do not be the cause of someone else not going home. ISMA (International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association) and the AWSC promoted snowmobile safety week in January, please listen to the safety message and keep it in mind when you are out riding. Stay safe!
See you on the trails!

JOIN US AT THE SPRING CONVENTION
By: Stormy Hovey – Office Manager AWSC.ORG
Here it is March and that means spring is right around the corner! Seems like only yesterday we started taking memberships and trail pass orders for the 2022-2023 season. I hope you all had a wonderful safe season.
The Spring Convention and Annual Meeting are being planned. The AWSC Annual Convention will be held in Green Bay, WI (Radisson Hotel & Conference Center), March 24-26, 2023. All clubs should have received convention information in a mailing sent to the club membership chair vis USPS, the end of January. The information was also emailed to all club officers that we have email addresses for. Of course, both these statements are only true if we have updated officer information for your club.
Convention registration forms and online registration will be available on the website at awsc.org.
DEADLINES for convention: Early bird registration ends March 6, 2023, after that registration will be $35. The hotel room block closes March 2, 2023. Voting Delegate for is due to the office by March 10, 2023.
Candidate profiles were highlighted in the February issue of WSN. Along with the mailing about the convention we sent club officer listings, club information forms and a club roster. Please take the time to update officer information including contact information / update your club information form and delete any members no longer with your club. This information should be returned to the AWSC.
As we near the end of the membership year, there are a few items I would like to point out.
Memberships both personal and commercial sponsor memberships will expire on 6/30/23.
Remember if you have members who are actually commercial sponsors, they should be listed as a commercial sponsor not a family membership. Business names are no longer being accepted under family membership.
We have listed on the website a current list of all commercial sponsors that is printable.
Consider the online membership application where the members can receive an email immediately when their AWSC membership has been renewed, along with the ability to print an AWSC membership card. This needs to be selected on a by club basis, have your club membership chair inquire with the office, to have this change made. Now is also the time to discuss within your club the change in the membership dates and the fact that you will need to renew your membership with your club so your AWSC dues are paid prior to purchasing your 2023-2024 trail pass. Those passes go on sale on 7/1/2023.
If your club elects officers in the spring, please have your officer list updated.
The Of the Year Award applications have been updated and are on the website. New this year a Young Groomer of the Year Award has been added. This award is to be given to an AWSC member that is between the age of 18-29.
There will be a silent auction for KAOS at spring convention, baskets can be donated at convention.
Raffle tickets are available – at convention and by calling the office. Have a wonderful end to the season and a safe and wonderful summer!!

Ican’t believe it’s already March! Fingers crossed we still have a few more days to enjoy the trails.
January and February were busy months attending a variety of events and sharing many smiles with both new and familiar faces. Be sure to check out my Facebook and Instagram pages for all the updates.
So far this season, I’ve fortunately traveled over 3,000 miles on Wisconsin’s incredible snowmobile trail systems. I was even able to put some miles on in the mountains hillclimbing and boondocking!
As KAOS President, I was honored to be invited to La Grande, Oregon for the Oregon State Snowmobile Association (OSSA) Convention. My sincere thanks to all the club members for your hard work and long hours to maintain the trails and keep them in great shape. Your dedication is very much appreciated!
On a sad note, my heart goes out to all who have been personally affected by the tragic snowmobile-related accidents this season. One accident is too many — before hitting the trails, please discuss with your group the importance of riding safely. We share the trails with many people who have a similar passion for snowmobiling. So, RIDE RIGHT and RIDE SAFE should be always at the top of our minds.
I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be your AWSC Miss Snowflake! Since my reign began in October, I have met a countless number of amazing people and I’m certainly looking forward to what’s yet to come. My thanks to everyone who has reached out and invited me to your events! Additionally, my supporters have been outstanding! Thank you Donahue Super Sports, DSG Outerwear, Floe International Trailers, K/M Sales and Service, Inc., Tyler’s Backcountry Awareness, Unique Signs and Designs and 1330 Wraps.

KAOS LEADERSHIP TRAINING
By: Madisyn Gates-Roehl
On February 10-12, KAOS members from all over the state traveled to YMCA Camp Nan A Bo Sho in Lakewood for our annual leadership training ride. At this event we had 17 youth attending! Youth were able to catch up with everyone since the workshop in October, do leadership activities, and everyone’s favorite part… RIDE!!
Friday night when people started to show up, Deb Uhlenbrauck, Oconto County Director had a taco bar all set up for dinner. To start off for the night, youth got to play Jenga block ice breaker, rock paper scissor contest, and were able to enjoy a movie.
For our full day at camp, we rode 126 miles in Oconto and Langlade counties. We split up into two groups which were led by Randy Murdock and Jay Thompson. For lunch we all met at Northwoods Inn where we got to see Judy Peterson and Tim Grall (Langlade County Director). After some amazing lunch we headed to Lily Sno-Birds Clubhouse to hang out and socialize. Once we got back to camp a pasta bar was all set up for us. After dinner we held our KAOS meeting and played lots of activities. For our leadership activity we got into two groups to write our own snowmobiling songs. It was a new experience for us all and we definitely had some great laughs. For the public speaking activity, we played “Tell me why it’s your favorite item.” Youth pulled an object out of the bag and had to tell everyone on the spot why it’s their favorite item. For a fun activity we played a bunch of small games.
Which included Trivia questions
Who can change the carbide the fastest
Who can pick up the most M&Ms with chopsticks
Stacking cups with a balloon
Scooping cotton balls onto a plate with a spoon and not using their hands
Who can wrap the most toilet paper around someone in a minute
For our last activity we played the annual snowmobile Jeopardy game. It really challenges us to see what we know about snowmobiling as a whole, not just about AWSC.
To end the night, we played Snowball Express and enjoyed some root beer floats.
Thank you to all our sponsors for the weekend and who all helped out:
Chaperones, Judy Peterson, Deb Uhlenbrauck (Oconto County Director)- for making breakfast and dinner for us, Tim Grall (Langlade County Director), Lily Sno-Birds Snowmobile Club, Oconto County Snowmobile Alliance, The Boarding House Supper Club, Skinny Daves, Lakewood SuperValu, Langlade County Snowmobile Council, Northwoods Inn

WHAT IS WISCONSIN’S SNOWMOBILE RECREATION COUNCIL?
The Snowmobile Recreation Council (SRC) met in St. Germain, Wisconsin on Thursday, February 2, 2023, with committee meetings starting at 8:30 am followed by a full council meeting. This was their scheduled winter meeting in conjunction with the St. Germain Groomer show. Below, is a bit of history on what the Snowmobile Recreation Council is, their duties, and a report from the February meeting.
ORIGIN AND APPOINTMENTS OF THE SRC
Created within the department of natural resources, a snowmobile recreational council consists of 15 members nominated by the governor, and with the advice and consent of the senate, are appointed for staggered 3-year terms. Commencing on July 1, 1972, ...all terms shall be for 3 years with 5 positions on the council to expire each year. At least 5 members of the council shall be from the territory north, and at least 5 members shall be from the territory south, of a line running east and west through the south limits of the city of Stevens Point.
DUTIES OF THE SRC
(1) The snowmobile recreational council shall carry out studies and make recommendations to the legislature, governor, department of natural resources, and department of transportation, on all matters related to this chapter, or otherwise affecting snowmobiles and snowmobiling. (2) The department shall prepare written minutes of each meeting of the snowmobile recreational council and shall make them available to any interested party upon request. (Those meeting agendas and minutes are located on the Wisconsin DNR website - dnr.wisconsin.gov)
WHAT THE SRC MET ABOUT IN FEBRUARY –A REPORT FROM DAVE NEWMAN
The Finance Committee received the DNR funding report from Jillian Steffes and reviewed the current financials.
The Infrastructure Committee received an update on SNARS and the Groomer Tracking Systems. Their discussion then concentrated on how to handle the expenses incurred by counties while clean up
trails following the December 15th storm. The storm left many miles of trails impassable by downed brush and trees and resulted in nearly 30 counties submitting their cleanup costs to SNARS. Some were minimal, but several had expenses putting them well over the $250 per mile cap for non-grooming under the supplemental program. The committee passed a motion to use the storm damage funds set aside in August and made a recommendation to the full council to have the DNR accept grants for the expenses relating to the storm damage clean up until March 1. At that time an ad hoc committee will review them for the Department and recommend payment. Counties need not apply if the expenses will be covered under maintenance or supplemental.
The Law Enforcement Committee received a DNR report from Jake Holsclaw. They discussed the need for additional law enforcement and how to handle the issue of trespassing. The AWSC reported it is working to increase the amount available for county law enforcement in the state budget.

The Tourism Committee approved snowmobile talking points drafted by Drew Nussbaum for use by the tourism department. Drew thanked everyone who reports to the Travel Wisconsin snow report website.
The full Council approved the recommendations made by the committees.

THE BADGER STATE SNOWMOBILE TORCH TOUR
By: Dave Newman, AWSC President
The 2023 Badger State Snowmobile Torch Tour was held on January 19 & 20. With the trails not open in Marathon and southern Lincoln counties, plans were made to use trucks and trailers for the first day of the tour and then ride the second day. The 6-12 inches of snow that showed up Thursday morning was too late to change the plans. The two-day event began at the Trailmates Club House with the club providing breakfast.
Following introductions and media interviews, we hit the snowcovered roads with trucks and trailers. Stops were made along the route recognizing the local clubs by passing the torch from club to club with pictures with local dignitaries and often included interviews with the local news media. By using trucks instead of snowmobiles, we were allowed more time for stops at some of the sponsors of the event, including the Incredible Bank in Merrill. From there, we headed to Tomahawk for lunch at the Tomahawk Sports Center and a tour of the Knight Owls new groomer shed. After stopping at the Hazelhurst Pub, we continued on to the Minocqua Visitors Bureau, Richie Lakeland Oil & Propane and Lakeland Powersports before ending the day at Bitters + Bull in Lake Tomahawk for Hors d’oeuvres.
Day two allowed the tour to continue via snowmobiles, with over 40 sleds at times, while enjoying some awesome trails through parts of Vilas and Oneida Counties. The ride started in Arbor Vitae at the Cross Country Cruisers club house with coffee and donuts. After stops in Sayner and St. Germain, lunch was held at the Snowmobile Hall of Fame. This year’s ride took us to Sugar Camp and added a stop to include the Hodag Sno Trails club before stopping in Three Lakes. We were honored to have the Wisconsin Tourism Secretary, Anne Sayers, join us on a portion of the ride again this year along with Regional Tourism Specialists, Drew Nussbaum and Jeff Anderson.
A huge thank you to all of the sponsors who make the event possible and to the organizers who made it successful.

MATT GOEDE WINS EAGLE RIVER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
The Formula III class at the 60th World Championship Eagle River Derby was an exciting one. With 30 entrants, the field was paired down to 12 for the final. When the checkered flag flew, it was Matt Goede from Mayer, Minnesota crossing the line first aboard his Ski-Doo. Goede put on a great show overcoming deteriorating track conditions, dulling traction products and limited vision due to the warm weather and freezing drizzle. Weather didn’t matter to the record crowds watching though, as Eagle River continues to impress with some of winter’s best snowmobile racing.
EAGLE RIVER’S HERFINDAHL TIES ALL-TIME I500 WIN RECORD
Team Arctic’s Pro cross-country racer, Zach Herfindahl, just raised the bar after winning COR Powersports Goodridge-Grygla I500. Herfindahl is the first cross country racer to win four of them, backto-back, and he also tied the all-time win record of five.

SNOWMOBILEHALLOFFAME.COM
If you are looking for a fun-for-the-whole-family winter snowmobiling event backed by star-power, we’d highly suggest attending the Snowmobile Racing Hall of Fame’s Ride with the Champs weekend in St. Germain, Wisconsin. This year’s event was stronger than ever with the induction of four major industry icons including Randy Karpik, Greg Spaulding, John Daniels and Tucker Hibbert. All were honored during a special induction banquet on Saturday and the SHOF filled the days leading up to it with a bucket list of activities including guided trail rides, a round table Q&A session with the famed Karpik brothers, a Scorpion reunion ride, autograph sessions and a Legend Lap event at the famed Eagle River Derby Complex. This annual celebration continues to grow by providing some of the best social interactions you can have with champs of the snowmobile industry.

Did You Know, Jeff Schwaller

WE’VE GOT BOTH.
If you want one sled that can truly do it all, you want a Switchback. New for 2023, the SnowCheck exclusive Switchback Assault is available with the world’s most powerful OEM 2-stroke turbo, the Patriot Boost, 650 or 850 Patriot engines. Knowing that it takes more than just an engine to build the ultimate crossover, it features the IGX 146 rear suspension with its proven on and off-trail handling. The Great Debate (Eliason Vs. Bombardier) –Who invented the first snowmobile? The first vehicle which could rightfully be called a snowmobile, as it possessed the ability to glide over snow, was invented in 1922 by Joseph Armand Bombardier, which spurred further innovation, eventually resulting in Carl Eliason’s one-person, single-track, engine-powered snow toboggan patented in 1927.
Carl Eliason of Sayner, Wisconsin, developed the prototype of the modern snowmobile in the 1920s, when he mounted a twocylinder engine on a long toboggan, steered it with skis under the front, and propelled it with a single, endless track.

In 1934, Bombardier’s young son died of peritonitis because the family couldn’t reach the hospital in time which underscored the need for effective winter transportation in rural communities. In 1935 he assembled a vehicle that ran on caterpillar tracks. The first “snowmobile” was steered by skis and could hold two or three passengers. The first buyers of his early snow machines were country doctors, ambulance drivers and priests living in remote areas.
It wasn’t until 1959 that Bombardier marketed the Ski-doo. Bombardier had started with larger snow vehicles and worked down to the smaller snow machines. Above is a patent filed in 1960.

FOUR FOR 24 –SKI-DOO
New technology continues to be the focus for Ski-Doo as they enter the 2024 model year. While more sleds will make the transition to the REV Gen5 platform, the news that will initially garner the bulk of the headlines and spring order interest will come from an over-the-top equipped turbo charged trail sled. Plus, Ski-Doo gives us a possible glimpse into the future with their first all-electric snowmobile.
TURBO FOR THE TRAIL
Last season it was Polaris making noise with their turbo-charged trail sleds aptly named “Boost.” Now for 2024 it’s Ski-Doo’s turn, and leave it to the kids in Valcourt to turn up the heat a notch further. The new 850 E-TEC Turbo R powerplant developed for the trail, produces a whopping 180-horsepower with a twist – an industry first water injection system. Using a calibrated mixture of methanol and water, the system sprays a cooling mist into the intake tracts after prolonged fullthrottle burns. The result, according to Ski-Doo, is more consistent power that won’t waiver when things heat up. We’ll be waiting for our test drive invitation to see if the claim holds true.
THE FIRST ELECTRIC SKI-DOO
They announced it was coming over a year ago, and the crew from Valcourt made good on that proclamation with the introduction of the Grand Touring Electric. According to Ski-Doo the new electric buggy will boast a recharge time as fast as 90-minutes to reach 80% charge; or 3-hours to reach a full charge. However, we have yet to hear about range or performance. The Grand Touring Electric will only be available to select outfitters and Ski-Doo’s own Uncharted Society locations.
BACKCOUNTRY GETS NEW LOOK
FOUR IS BETTER THAN TWO
Improved braking performance will be found on high-end XR-S packages. The new Brembo package increases caliper power and pad surface area, thus giving riders improved feel, feedback, and reduced lever pressure. Plus, with twice as many pads at work, brake fade should be dramatically reduced under high demand riding conditions.
The transition to the new look GEN5 bodywork continues in earnest for model year 24 as several models get the smoothed cowls and side panels including the popular Backcountry. While primarily a cosmetic upgrade, the new look gives the Backcountry a sleeker stance that’s ready to tackle the backcountry. The only model that will remain in GEN4 will be the Sport.

FOUR FOR 24 –POLARIS
Polaris has been on the gas like no other manufacturer over the past few years, pumping out new models, new innovations, and new engines at a rapid pace. Last year they dropped heavy hitters in both the trail and mountain segments with the Boost and 9R. For 2024, there’s less all-new, but still plenty of sizzle, as the migration from AXYS to the Matryx platform continues and a slew of improvements have found their way into the 2024 mix across the line-up. In addition, Polaris has added still more reasons to early order under their Snow Check program with a ship date guarantee that puts cash on the table if Polaris doesn’t get your spring order buggy to you before winter sets in.
LOVE FOR THE RED, WHITE, AND BLUE
Retro or throwback graphics have been a successful formula for the Roseau maker for many years, often as a Snow Check only offering. While several have caught our longing gaze, this year’s XCR red, white, and blue combo is our favorite yet. With a racetrack pedigree, the XCR is available in 850 or 650 power choices and 128” or 136” track lengths.
ALL-NEW SERIES 9 325 TRACK
Polaris just dropped the gauntlet on the deep snow track wars. For 2024 the company will offer a 3.25” tall lug track available on Boost and 9R RMK models and only during Snow Check. Polaris claims their new track will deliver newfound levels of acceleration and lift, thanks to a lightweight, quick to spool design. The Series 9 325 illustrates the company’s continued commitment and leadership in the deep snow segment.
RIDE COMMAND FOR THE WIN
Polaris launched Ride Command way back in 2012, which means the company has over a decade of experience, development, and enhancements to the interactive, GPS mapping, and connectivity technology. While others have introduced their own versions of Ride Command, as the saying goes, nothing comes close to the original. We’ve been touting the “game changing” attributes of Ride Command for several years, and every season, the Ride Command team keeps making it better. For 2024, the full-color touch screen display that accompanies the technology will make its way on to even more models, and if you have the opportunity to equip your sled with it…the answer is a no brainer. Ride Command is worth every penny.
BUILT FOR THE MIDWEST
There’s no question, the Midwest is home to the best snowmobile trail system anywhere, and the extended track lengths and storage capabilities of a crossover sled is more and more becoming the choice of riders who grace these trails. While there are a lot of crossover sleds to choose from to tackle the trails and the occasional unplowed forest road, our experience with the Switchback XC has always made it a favorite. Polaris likes to call it the perfect 50/50 on/ off trail snowmobile, and we tend to agree. Back for 2024 with a continuous influx of tiny improvements, the Switchback XC will have a reserved spot on our wish list for next winter.
March 2023 19 2024
FOUR FOR 24 –ARCTIC CAT
The all-new CATALYST platform powered by Team Arctic’s venerable 600 C-TEC2 engine precipitates the leading headline for Arctic Cat’s 2024 model launch. There’s a lot of newness to discuss beyond styling for the Arctic Cat faithful in the Trail, Crossover and Mountain categories. This riderinfluenced platform boasts dramatic weight reductions, all-new rear suspensions and a departure from the traditional chaincase with an all-new belt drive. If you are looking for a big-bore engine in this platform, you’ll have to wait, but the team in Thief River Falls has been pretty vocal about it, telling us an all-new big-bore is coming next year. If you want more ponies, you’ll find the 800 CTEC2 engine in the legacy ProCross and ProClimb platforms, and those yearning for four-stroke options, will be happy to see the 7000-series engine return while the turbocharged Thundercat continues to own the Performance Muscle category.
ARCTIC CAT BELT DRIVE (ZR CATALYST)
- The all-new Belt Drive system on all CATALYST models is a departure from the traditional Arctic Cat chaincase, but the benefits outweigh any of the unknowns. Eliminating the rotating mass and weight of a traditional chaincase allows the 600cc C-TEC2 engine to spool up quicker providing better throttle response, instantaneous acceleration and frees up horsepower to transfer it to the snow more efficiently. The belt drive also eliminates the hassle of checking and replacing oil levels within a chaincase. Once your belt tension is set, the new belt drive is nearly service-free and hands-off.
AWS FRONT SUSPENSION (ZR / RIOT / M CATALYST)
Arctic Cat pioneered the front Wishbone Suspension (AWS) and it has been synonymous with confidence-inspired handling for decades. For 2024, the CATALYST platform brings back the legendary name with two all-new segmentfocused designs (Trail and Mountain), providing two different suspension geometries. The outcome, are new AWS generations focused on the ultimate handling and control in all CATALYST platform models.
ALL-NEW 129-INCH SLIDE-ACTION REAR SUSPENSION (ZR CATALYST)
This next generation SLIDE-ACTION suspension design dials up the fun factor at any winter playground! Lightweight, playful and robust, this uncoupled suspension utilizes the long front arm from ZR race models and is designed to transfer weight – the ZR ride becomes fully influenced by the rider’s position. Rip a windblown ditch line with confidence, rail a trail corner by leaning forward and shift your weight rearward to loft the skis exiting it. A 3-wheel rear axle is standard and available with choice of IFP gas shocks or ATAC adjust on-the-fly packages.

2024 FOUR FOR 24 –YAMAHA
Yamaha launched their 2024 Snowmobiles and Spring Power Surge (SPS) Sales Program. Popular models like the LE, GT, SE and 400 series have all returned, complemented by Utility, Twoup and Youth models.
THE SRX MUSCLE
Yamaha’s 2024 Legendary SRX is back and paying homage to the 1980s SRX with its eye-catching black and gold colorway. Still one of the fastest muscle sleds on snow, this legend continues to build on its illustrious reputation year-after-year.
THE SOUGHT-AFTER SIDEWINDERS
The crowd-favorite Sidewinder L-TX LE EPS and renowned Sidewinder SRX LE EPS join other 2024 Limited Edition (LE) models for the Spring Power Surge period. This is the only time you can secure these sought-after snowmobiles.
ACT FAST – BUY THROUGH YAMAHA’S SPRING POWER SURGE PROGRAM
This year’s Spring Power Surge (SPS) program runs from March 14 through April 4, 2023 and is the best time to secure your ride for next season. SPS customers will receive great offers, including priority delivery and low interest rates with Yamaha Financial Services.
2023 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The AWSC offers a variety of scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are current members in the AWSC and plan to pursue further education at an accredited two or four-year institution of higher learning. RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS GOES BEYOND VOLUNTEERING
It’s 5:30 in the evening and I’m driving south of Marshfield, Wisconsin to a little town called Vesper, in Wood County, and that’s where my story begins.
David and Margie Straka live in Vesper, and I have never met these people, but when I pulled into their driveway, they opened the garage door, waved me in, and after a very long, much needed hug, Margie handed me the garage door opener and said, “The big button opens this door.” I was home.
To frame up how I arrived at the Straka’s, I should start at the beginning. My husband, Pete Schneider, and myself, live in Rice Lake (Barron County). Pete has been a Barron County director since the 1990s, and is president of the Rice Lake Snow & Dirt club. Due to some unforeseen health issues, Pete was air lifted to Marshfield Hospital on November 27, and this story started on December 20, five days before Christmas.
Pete had been in the Marshfield hospital much longer than we anticipated. My motel bills at this time were nearing $3,000 and being desperate and stressed to the limit, I decided to call the Wood County Rep (Straka’s) listed in the AWSC magazine (WSN). When I called, Margie didn’t answer, so I left a pretty desperate message regarding my situation and asked if she possibly knew anyone I might be able to stay with, for an undefined period of time.
Margie called me back and said she couldn’t decipher most of my message because it was cutting out. As soon as I told her my story about Pete, without hesitation she insisted I come stay with her and David.
The next morning, Margie texted me to see how I was doing, and asked if I minded a cat being in the house? I told her I was fine, but asked if it would be okay to come on Christmas Eve? (Talk about a big ask!)
Margie said I was very welcome and she couldn’t wait to meet me. In a later text, she asked me where I had been eating my meals. When I told her, I was eating very little because of stress and motel stays, she said I was welcome to anything in their refrigerator and also invited to eat evening meals with them.

The next day she and David were in Marshfield and called to see if I’d like to go to dinner with them, keep in mind, I hadn’t even met them yet!
Pete was just out of surgery that evening and I was waiting to see him, so I declined. The Strakas gave me their prayers, and again, I experienced a heartfelt connection to them.
Margie told me to come to their place any time that was good for me. I told her I might be a puddle when I got there and she said, “I’ll be here to wipe up the mess.”
So, on Christmas Eve I arrived. Who in their right mind allows a total stranger into their home at Christmas?! For this, and countless other reasons, David and Margie Straka are the most generous couple I’ve ever run into.
(David is the President of the Vesper Snow Drifters, and Margie is the AWSC Wood County Rep, the Auburndale Nite Owls secretary and the Wood County Alliance secretary.)
For two and a half weeks I stayed with these wonderful people who were always there to give a hug when needed, they fed a starving nervous wreck, and consoled me when all I could do was weep with fear and exhaustion. Placing a desperate call to a member of the Wisconsin state snowmobile association was the best decision I could have ever made. We are a family united by like interests (powersports), but beyond that, we are a great example of humanity.
When I told the Strakas I’d never be able to pay them back for all they had done for me, they said I owed them nothing and just, “pay it forward.” I felt a tangible, meaningful, bliss these two exuded. There is nothing random about it, David and Margie Straka are selfless, and both will be forever friends.
I’m very happy to report, after 46 days in the hospital, Pete is home recuperating with me.

WISCONSIN’S MILITARY RIDE –ONE OF THE BEST IN THE STATE
WIMILITARYSNOWMOBILERIDE.COM
Wisconsin’s military appreciation ride is a family snowmobiling event hosted at the World Championship Derby Complex in Eagle River, Wisconsin. The ride is designed to thank veterans for their service and grow the sport of snowmobiling. This is a free event for veterans to attend, and is also a way to educate about Wisconsin’s 600 snowmobile clubs and the great camaraderie enjoyed by thousands of club members who volunteer their time to create and maintain over 22,000 miles of public snowmobile trails in Wisconsin. This ride is possible thanks to all the generous donations provided by many local Eagle River businesses, snowmobile clubs and individual supporters. Thank you everyone for making this one of the best veteran appreciation events in the state.
Our first stop was the Snowmobile Hall of Fame in St. Germain, Wisconsin. (snowmobilehalloffame. com) This building is packed with representations of snowmobiling’s richest history. These little riders were ready to rip.
These gentlemen swap stories about a Fox-Trac snowmobile. Fox-Trac was designed by Fred Fox from Janesville, Wisconsin, who later founded the LeMans Corporation which housed Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties under its umbrella. Fox recently passed away at the age of 86.
On this mid-January day, Eagle River was met with some uncharacteristic and untimely rain, so the group was gathered at the Derby Complex and briefed we’d be touring the Snowmobile Hall of Fame, the Eliason Snowmobile Museum and the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame via the comfy seats of a tour bus instead of on snowmobiles.
(L-R) Organizers, Todd Achterburg, Dick Decker and Jeff Vollenweider welcomed the group and thanked everyone for their service and participation.

Sayner, Wisconsin is home to the Eliason Snowmobile Company, founded by Carl Eliason. Eliason is credited as inventor of the snowmobile.
One of the first Eliason snowmobiles is on display in a mini-museum at the Eliason Hardware Company in Sayner.
The final tour stop was the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame (ishof.com) in Eagle River. This museum represents and acknowledges the many machines and accomplishments of those within the snowmobile world. Pictured here is AJ Kreager’s Kitty Cat on display, one that the past AWSC Miss Snowflake would have raced at a young age.

AWSC AND KAOS VISIT OREGON STATE SNOWMOBILE ASSOCIATION
By Rachyl Burzinski, KAOS President and Tia Fuchs, KAOS VP OREGONSNOW.ORG
Rachyl Burzinski (KAOS President), Tia Fuchs (KAOS VP) and Lori Heideman (AWSC VP) had the amazing opportunity to travel to La Grande, Oregon for the Oregon State Snowmobile Association (OSSA) Convention!
We got to experience some of the best parts of mountain riding and honed our skills climbing, side hilling and boondocking! The views were absolutely stunning at Cathrine Creek and Ladd Canyon. Don with Prinoth also taught us how to operate a groomer and we were able to groom the trails with a tiller! We spent the whole weekend with the OSSA Board, Dennis Jordan, Lisa Burt, Lisa Mahoney, and TJ Reilly. We had great conversations about both snowmobile programs as well as KAOS.
We concluded our trip with a presentation about youth involvement in front of Oregon’s membership and were thoroughly impressed to have several young snowmobilers approach us after the presentation.
We enjoyed Oregon’s hospitality and camaraderie while we spent the week with them. Thank you to the OSSA for this opportunity, it was truly incredible!

HOOLIGANS HOST 3RD ANNUAL RADAR RUNS
Submitted by:
Lori and Rich Thiemer
Hooligan’s Snowmobile Club held our 3rd annual Tomahawk Radar Runs on January 28, 2023. We are a social club supporting the grooming clubs in the area with donations from our radar run proceeds. We had a total of 84 sleds registered to race which included our youngest racer at age 4 on a Kitty Kat! We strive to keep the event affordable and fun for families to come watch with no admission or parking fees and are accessible by car or snowmobile. Another local club serves food as a fundraiser throughout the day. The highlight of the day is the noon kids races. We are encouraging the next generation of snowmobilers by holding special kids classes for 60-200 cc machines and kids up to 11 years old. This year each kid received a Hooligan’s Tomahawk Radar Run winter hat and a medal. We hold several raffles the day of the event as well. Our track is a 660’ snow packed trail on land so we don’t have to worry about ice conditions. Come join us next year, the Radar Runs are held the last Saturday of January at Holly’s Bar and Grill, Highway N, Tomahawk.

Blake Chandler, member of the Viking Snowdrifters of Stoughton, has been an active groomer operator in training for the last three years. He can drive his snowmobile on the trail after completing his snowmobile safety operator course. Blake also comes to fundraising events and helps put in and maintain trails. Blake started riding a Kitty Kat when he was 4. I’m a firm believer if you get your youth involved when they are young, they’ll be lifetime enthusiasts.
2023 LANGLADE COUNTYWIDE SNOWMOBILE RIDE HUGE SUCCESS
Submitted
by: Steve Noskowiak- Trail Boss Antigo Sno-Drifters
On Saturday, January 28, 1,000-plus snowmobilers were fortunate to be able to gather for the annual Langlade County Snowmobile Countywide Ride hosted by the Langlade County Snowmobile Council and the Lily Sno-Birds Clubhouse.
The fun-filled day was comprised of longtime friends and family coming together from all parts of the state to reminisce and support the Langlade County Snowmobile Council and the Lily Sno-Birds. Many raffles were held and free food and refreshments were provided. All of the raffle prizes were donated by our ten area snowmobile clubs, many generous businesses, and other supportive individuals. We had some of our food donated and we had a very generous donation from Pepsi Products that helped provide our pizza, soda and water. Our wonderful members of the Lily Sno-Birds made the other delicious food provided for this event.
The day ended by helping our Lily Sno-Birds raise approximately $600 to go toward their well fund. The Lily Clubhouse is a memberowned establishment that was forced to replace their well a month before this ride-in event. If you would like to assist Lily Sno-Birds with their well fund, you may go on their Facebook page for further information.
This awesome event would not have been possible without all of the hardworking and dedicated volunteers and donors who helped make this event one of the most successful and recordbreaking events we have had in the last forty-one years! The turnout is a true testament to how much the snowmobile community appreciates our amazing county of trails here in Langlade County!

CALEDONIA SNO-LORDS DEDICATE MEMORIAL SNOWMOBILE TRAIL
Submitted by: Rhonda Lechner
The Caledonia
Sno-Lords dedicated a Memorial Snowmobile Trail near Highway G in Caledonia to Ronald “Ron” Willms. Ron joined the snowmobile club in 1971 and
later joined the Westfield White Trackers snowmobile club when he moved to Marquette County in 2002. Ron continued with the Caledonia Sno-Lords as an honorary member. Ron and his wife, Maria, were very passionate about snowmobiling and Ron became a trail boss for the Caledonia Sno-Lords. Ron cleared many trails, helped in the purchasing of three different groomers, groomed trails, and did maintenance on the groomers. At one time the Caledonia Sno-Lords had 59 miles of trail in Racine County. Ron and his wife Maria planned several club trips to Radisson, WI as well as participating in a variety of other club activities. Ron was well known to the Racine County Alliance of Snowmobile Clubs and won the Snowmobiler of the Year award in April of 1985. Ron was very active in both snowmobile clubs until his passing in June of 2019.
The Caledonia Sno-Lords dedicated their first memorial trail in 2012 to Fred “Sonny” Bauer and Gaylen Grundman who were some of the founding members of the club. The snowmobile club remains very active in the community and participates in highway cleanup projects. In addition, the club continues to raise funds through raffles and other events to continue improvements with trails and grooming equipment to maintain their trail system.

INLAND SNOWBLAZERS CELEBRATE 50 YEARS
MANITOWOCTRAILS.COM
By: Sandy Oswald, Secretary
The Inland
Snowblazers of Taus is located in northwestern Manitowoc County and will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary on Sunday, March 26, at their annual Dance and Landowner Appreciation banquet.
The club had its first meeting on March 24, 1973 with 31 people present. Many of the members were local families just starting out in the sport. In 1974, we helped add six miles of trail to expand the Manitowoc County trail from its original 32 miles. Manitowoc was the first county in the state of Wisconsin to put public snowmobile trails on private property. Over the years, our section of maintained trail has presently grown to 24 miles. All of these miles go over private property and we have a strong relationship with our landowners.
As the trails developed in the county, we relied on two neighboring clubs, the Viking Sno-Riders of Valders and the Lakeshore Snowmobile Club of Manitowoc, to groom our trails. In 2001, we made the commitment to groom our own trails by purchasing a used Tucker Sno-Cat. We currently groom our trails with a 2014 Tucker Sno-Cat and Arrowhead drag.
In our early years, we held snowmobile rallies and dances as our fundraisers. In 1982, we won a 1982 Ski-doo 3500 Citation through the AWSC Membership Drive. We turned that prize into a club fundraiser, selling tickets and awarding it. As the years have passed, we have continued to hold our annual dance as our main fundraiser. We include our Landowner Banquet on the same day, inviting the landowners as our guests at the dance. It makes for a great day to socialize with them.
We currently have five certified snowmobile instructors and have been conducting classes since 2000.
As one of the nine member clubs in the Manitowoc County Snowmobile Alliance, we have actively supported their fundraisers, provided members as officers at a county-level, and helped with planning for the AWSC Convention each of the 3 times when it was held in Manitowoc. We also provided a stop each year for the poker run buses as part of the Convention.
This year in anticipation of our 50th Anniversary, we have been doing a “Throwback Thursday” posting on our Facebook page. The posts include pictures from our early years of the 70s through the 90s to help provide a visual of how our club has progressed over the years. It has garnered a lot of interest and brings back some great memories that were made over the years.
While we haven’t had a lot of snow in Manitowoc County over the past few years, we keep a positive outlook that next year is going to be the snowiest year ever!

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

The club started August 22, 1972 when a group gathered at the Stapleton’s Hotel. The following meetings amassed ideas which were then presented and officers were elected. At the time, a total of two miles of trail were maintained, which has grown to 12.9 miles currently. Meetings take place the third Tuesday of the month from August through April at the Rustic Inn, Mapleton.
Our members, the landowners, trail master, officers and board members are all an important part of the club. To show our appreciation every year, we host a landowner’s dinner where they have the opportunity to participate in a raffle for great prizes.
Fundraisers for the club include meat raffles along with county raffle tickets sold at our Wisconsin Snow Show booth in Milwaukee. We have donated funds to the MS Ride, Honor Flight, A Child’s Smile, North Lake Food Pantry and local people in need.
We are the only club in the county with a clubhouse, and it’s an attractive feature setting our club apart from others. We host trail, Packer football, and Christmas parties there during the winter season. When not in use, it doubles as a storage shed for stakes and signs.
Many memorable club trips are held in areas of Northern Wisconsin including, Land O Lakes, Dunbar, Ladysmith, Carter, Mole Lake, and most recently, Lac Du Flambeau. When snow permits, our club gathers locally and rides for a Friday night fish fry which has turned out to be a big hit for members.
The mission of the club is to maintain and promote the great sport of snowmobiling and charitable needs in and around the Waukesha County area. We are a non-profit club comprised of volunteers dedicated to the sport of snowmobiling. Think snow and here is to another spectacular 50 years!
