WELCOMELETTER from GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY

WELCOMELETTER from the CLERC CENTER

Dear MSSD community,

Alumni, parents, and friends,

The Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) has been a vital part of the national deaf education landscape since it opened its doors in 1969. You, our alumni, who have come from near and far to celebrate MSSD’s golden anniversary this weekend, are living proof of MSSD’s success. You have become productive citizens. You have excelled in education, law and government, business and industry, the biological and physical sciences, mathematics and technology, the arts and culture, and much more. You have become leaders in the Deaf community. You have made MSSD proud. This weekend is a celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary–and it is also a celebration of you.

Welcome to MSSD’s 50th anniversary celebration! Our teachers, staff, and students are excited to have alumni and community members from the past 50 years join us to mark this special time in MSSD’s history. We are honored to be part of such a special place that brings together people from a great variety of backgrounds. Although we come from hometowns all across the United States and its territories, MSSD will always be home—both for those who graduated as proud Eagles and for those who saw the potential in each student and invested in their success. Seeing the many accomplishments of our alumni gives us continued inspiration for the next generation.

Throughout my tenure as president of Gallaudet University, I have seen the excellence, dedication, and caring of MSSD’s teachers, staff, administrators, and families. I have seen the palpable enthusiasm of MSSD’s students and alumni. In the classroom, in athletics, in extracurricular activities, and in service to the community, MSSD students have distinguished themselves over and over. Like you, they will become MSSD alumni, and they will carry on the school’s rich legacy.

We are thrilled to welcome so many alumni, employees, and families back to campus this weekend. Your willingness to travel from all corners of the world to be here to celebrate with us is a tribute to how special a place MSSD really is. We hope you enjoy every minute of your time here at MSSD’s 50th anniversary celebration. May it be a trip down memory lane as well as an opportunity to create new connections and be part of MSSD’s continued bright future.

Thank you for being part of MSSD’s history. Enjoy renewing old connections and meeting new friends during the many activities planned to mark this time in MSSD’s history. Reminisce with your former teachers and staff members, all of whom helped to make you who you are today. Most of all, bring home memories to last a lifetime.

We want to take a moment to thank the many people that have come together to make this celebration possible. They have worked tirelessly to create a celebration worthy of this occasion.

Congratulations! Sincerely,

Thank you for being part of our community!

WELCOMELETTER from the MSSD ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

HISTORYANDMUSEUM

MSSD MUSEUM

Dear MSSD community,

MSSD Front Entrance

In September of 1969, MSSD officially opened with 80 students. Our school has grown tremendously in just 50 years, bringing countless success stories in theater, athletics, academics, and in the lives of our alumni.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. 1 - 2:30 p.m.

The success MSSD has brought to its students over the past five decades is remarkable and a testament to the efforts of the dedicated staff and faculty who have educated and led our alumni to successful lives and careers.

We are here today to celebrate the accomplishments of MSSD and our alumni. Our alumni have worked on planning for MSSD’s 50th anniversary celebration with the Clerc Center for this memorable weekend. We did this because we all love our alma mater, and we are proud to be members of the MSSD family. We want to thank MSSD’s 50th anniversary celebration Clerc Center chairperson Nicholas Gould and assistant chairperson Aparna Lele and their team at the Clerc Center for their dedication and for working alongside us for the past year and a half. We also want to thank Phyllis Brooks, Don Cochran, Jeff Branch, and our volunteers who have worked with us to create this special anniversary weekend. On behalf of the Model Secondary School for the Deaf Alumni Association, Inc., we welcome you home! Greet your classmates as if you just saw them yesterday, give high fives to your old teammates, and create new memories this weekend. It’s time to celebrate what makes MSSD unique—all of us! Sincerely,

3

Chris Kaftan ’97 MSSDAA President

Kathleen Brockway ’89 MSSD 50th Alumni Chairperson

*Open to the public

With special thanks to the Museum Studies class that made this museum possible: Teacher John Borkowski and students William Lovette, Susanna McGlamery, Mackenzie Smith, Jorina Traina, Cal Trapani, and Clarissa Wojnar. Courtesy of Gallaudet University Archives

The many achievements of our alumni on the playing fields, in Theatre Malz, in academic competitions, and in their lives after high school is reflective of our tireless contributions and desire to be better citizens.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The students, teachers, and staff look forward to meeting you at the anniversary celebration! Please be sure to visit MSSD’s museum located at the MSSD front entrance. Take a stroll down memory lane with all of the pictures you will find there. We would love to hear about your school memories! The temporary MSSD Building, 1970-1976.

How did MSSD come into existence and why? In 1965, the Babbidge Report to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare described the situation in the education of deaf students as “abysmal.” Something needed to be done about raising the achievement of deaf and hard of hearing students in school and beyond. In response to this report, on October 15, 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Model Secondary School for the Deaf Act, and in May of 1969, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and the president of Gallaudet College signed an agreement authorizing the establishment and operation of MSSD on the college campus.

HISTORYANDMUSEUM

HISTORYANDMUSEUM

The U.S. Congress established MSSD with a dual mandate—to provide an exemplary education program for its own students while also developing and disseminating materials and developing programs for relocation in other schools and programs across the country. MSSD began its first year on September 8, 1969, with 80 students enrolled. The first (temporary) building was located on the site of the present Kendall Demonstration Elementary School. The school also leased a dormitory from The Catholic University of America for the 21 students who needed room and board. Mervin Garretson, the first principal, and Doin Hicks, the school’s director, supervised 12 teachers. Today, MSSD educates students from all over the United States and its territories. The first MSSD history class was created in the fall of 2018 by teacher Mary Ann Seremeth with assistance from librarian Ricardo Lopez. The MSSD history class focused on giving our students handson experience with researching, collecting, and documenting MSSD history. The digitalized collection of MSSD yearbooks available at the Eagle’s Nest Luncheon is an example of their hard work that will continue throughout the year. See page 27 for the list of students who have been involved with the MSSD history class.

©2019 Sorenson Communications, LLC. If you choose Sorenson as your default provider, you can port your existing 10-digit number to Sorenson from another provider or Sorenson can provide you with one for the geographic area where you live or work. If you later change your default provider, you can port your number to that provider. When selecting Sorenson, you must provide to Sorenson the physical address (i.e., the Registered Location) from which you are placing the call, so that Sorenson can properly route any 911 calls you may make. If you move or change your location, you must notify Sorenson immediately. You can update your Registered Location from your Sorenson videophone by calling 800-659-4810 or by visiting www.svrs.com/moving. Sorenson will confirm receipt of your Registered Location information. Emergency calls made via internet-based TRS may not function the same as traditional E911 service. For example, you may not be able to dial 911 if there is an internet-service failure or if you lose electrical power, and your 911 call may not be routed correctly if you have not updated your Registered Location. For more information on the process of obtaining 10-digit numbers and the limitations and risks associated with using Sorenson’s VRS to place a 911 call, please visit Sorenson’s website: www.sorenson. com/disclaimer. For more information on toll-free numbering, please visit www.svrs.com/tollfree.
