THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION

The tradition of the academic procession and academic apparel goes back to the early days of the oldest European universities, where gowns and hoods began to be required in the fourteenth century. Although European institutions continue to show great diversity in their specifications on academic apparel, current practices in this country follow the code established by the American Council on Education.

Academic apparel indicates the most advanced degree held by the wearer. Gowns for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees are distinguished by the variation in sleeve length and by the width of the edging. The color of the edging of the hood indicates the subject of the degree (e.g., white for arts, yellow for science, light blue for education, dark blue for philosophy) and the colors of the lining of the hood indicate the institution from which the degree was received. For Montana State University Billings the colors are blue and gold. Apparel for the doctoral degree is distinguished by the panels on the sides of the hood, the gold tassel on the cap, and the velvet trim on the gown.

Montana State University Billings’ baccalaureate candidates who have excelled academically wear honor cords. Gold honor cords (signifying summa cum laude ) distinguish graduating seniors who have attained a grade point average of 4.0. Gold and silver entwined honor cords (signifying magna cum laude) distinguish graduating seniors who have attained a grade point average between 3.75-3.99. Silver honor cords (signifying cum laude) distinguish graduating seniors who have attained a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.74. Blue and white entwined honor cords (signifying high honors, 3.75-4.0, and honors, 3.50-3.74) distinguish recipients of Associate degrees and Certificates. Honors designations are based on the cumulative grade point average which includes graded transfer work from other institutions.

The marching order for the Montana State University Billings academic procession is as follows: grand marshal, emeritus faculty, faculty, candidates for academic degrees, platform party.

New Professor Emeritus Dr. Keith Edgerton

Dr. Keith Edgerton Professor Emeritus of History

The Department of History is nominating Dr. Keith Edgerton for emeritus status upon his retirement based on the many contributions he has made to our students, department, College, and University over 28 years of service.

EXPLANATION

Dr. Edgerton earned his MA in History at the University of Montana and his PhD in American Studies from Washington State University. He joined the MSUB History Department in 1994 and has served the institution for 28 years. While at MSUB, he has served as Chair of the Academic Senate, President of the Faculty Association, on dozens of different committees and DRTCs, as Faculty Association Grievance Officer, on search committees, and as a formal and informal mentor.

Dr. Edgerton has taught a range of highly rated courses in American history from the Civil War to the present. His teaching has remained relevant despite his long tenure at MSUB. He continued to seek pedagogical development opportunities, such as through the John Gardner Institute, and has used supplemental instructors to help students succeed. He is an approachable professor, and, as a student noted, “his door is always open.” For decades, Dr. Edgerton has promoted research as a pedagogical tool. Indeed, Dr. Edgerton has pursued a rigorous research agenda. Most recently, he published an article in the peer-reviewed journal Montana, The Magazine of Western History on the famed “copper king” of Butte, William A. Clark. His monograph, Montana Justice: Power, Punishment and the Montana Penitentiary, has been recognized as an important work in his field. Dr. Edgerton contributes to the field through his numerous book reviews (over 150 professional reviews!), op-eds, and essays. He is widely respected as a prominent public intellectual and frequently provides historical context on contemporary issues.

His expertise in the American West has made him a favorite speaker in the community. He has presented to numerous local and state organizations, including the Billings Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary and Lions clubs, both television stations, the Carbon County Historical Association, the Montana Museum of Art and Culture, and the Butte-Silverbow County archives, among others. He serves as chair of the Yellowstone County Historic Preservation Board. Nationally, he serves as an editorial referee for several scholarly journals and presses, is a featured scholar for the “Road Scholar” program and consults with several educational agencies. Dr. Edgerton has earned many honors over his career, including the Cox Fellowship Award, Faculty Excellence Awards, and numerous grants and fellowships.

Dr. Edgerton embodies the true spirit of a senior faculty member — he is engaged, professional, thoughtful, provides crucial institutional memory and historical context to decision-making, and continuously advocates for faculty and students. As an Emeritus Professor, we have no doubt that Dr. Keith Edgerton would continue to serve and celebrate Montana State University Billings.

Adjunct Assistant Professor Emerita of Educational Theory and Practice

Upon the occasion of the retirement of Ms. Katherine Holt from Montana State University Billings, faculty in the College of Education wish to express their appreciation for her service to the University, the Montana University System, and the people of the State of Montana and recommend that the rank of Adjunct Assistant Professor Emerita of Educational Theory and Practice, be conferred on Ms. Katherine Holt by the Board of Regents of the Montana University System.

EXPLANATION

Katherine Holt earned her B.A. degree in Language Arts Education from George Fox College graduating magna cum laude in 1981. In 1986 she graduated with a Master of Arts in Teaching from Lewis and Clark College.

She has worked at Montana State University Billings for twenty-five years. She joined Montana State University Billings in 1997 as a part time instructor in the English Department in the College of Arts and Sciences. She also taught classes at MSUB College of Technology and supervised student teachers in the College of Education. In 1999 she joined the Department of Educational Theory and Practice in a full-time position as the Clinical Practice Coordinator for field experiences in the College of Education with additional teaching responsibilities. In this position she coordinated the placement and supervision of education majors in junior field and student teaching, worked with school districts, trained university supervisors, and conducted seminars for student teachers. She built relationships with school district partners both in the community and across the state and she has collaborated with field experience coordinators at other Montana institutions of high education. This work has been invaluable as the College of Education develops opportunities for teacher candidates in schools.

She had teaching responsibilities as a non-tenured Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice where she taught education courses each semester. She was an English and Language Arts teacher in Oregon for 8 years and an English teacher in the Billings Adult Education program for 4 years and was able to bring her own classroom experience to her college students. In addition, she has served on many MSUB college and campus committees, acted as the liaison between the Department of Educational Theory and Practice and the English department for secondary English majors and she has advised education majors in the College of Education. In recognition of her contributions to the university she was awarded the MSUB Faculty Excellence Award for non-tenured faculty in both 2012 and 2020. In recognition of Ms. Katherine Holt’s excellence in teaching, and service to MSU Billings, the State of Montana and her profession, the faculty of the College of Education are honored to nominate Ms. Katherine Holt to the rank of Adjunct Assistant Professor Emerita of Educational Theory and Practice.

TheDepartment of English, Philosophy, & Modern Languages is nominating Dr. Deborah Schaffer for emerita status upon her retirement based on the many contributions she has made to our students, department, College, and University over 40 years of service.

EXPLANATION

Dr. Deborah Schaffer received her BA in Linguistics and French from the University of Rochester (1976), and her MA and Ph.D. in Linguistics from The Ohio State University (1982). Since joining the English faculty in 1983, Professor Schaffer has made major contributions to her department, university and local and professional communities in teaching, service, and scholarship. In teaching, she taught courses in linguistics, composition, literature, and writing pedagogy and updated and created several linguistics courses for the English programs. She also directed the MSUB Writing Lab (1995-2001) and served as WRIT 101 course coordinator for the EPML Dept. (2003-2020).

In campus service, Professor Schaffer served on department, college and university-level committees, most notably as chair of the University Rank and Tenure Committee (1999-2000) and as chair/co-chair of the Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Curriculum Council (2004-2023). She helped edit many MSUB and other documents, including the annual MSUB Wine & Food Festival catalog. In the community, Professor Schaffer has been an active member, committee chair, board member and officer in the Billings affiliate of AAUW for 40 years. She also served other local organizations, including Congregation Beth Aaron, in various capacities and made presentations to classes and other groups in the area. Professor Schaffer provided longstanding professional service to the Popular Culture Association, chairing the Language Attitudes and Popular Linguistics interest area for the annual PCA conference for 15 years, 1991-2005. In addition, she has been an editorial advisor for the Shippensburg Journal of Modern Languages from 2008 onward.

Dr. Schaffer produced many scholarly presentations and publications while at MSUB. She presented at least one academic paper at national conferences every year since 1983, with the exception of 2020’s COVID-19 hiatus. She also published 13 academic articles in national and international journals since 1983, along with articles in other periodicals and conference proceedings, and chapters in edited collections. In addition, she co-edited two books, published numerous print and online book reviews, and was interviewed about her research on Radio New Zealand (2019).

Through the years, Professor Schaffer’s professional contributions earned her university and other local honors, including two MSUB Faculty Excellence Awards, the Faculty Award for Exceptional Support of Students with Disabilities, a studentselected Outstanding Faculty Award, and two shared Named Gift Awards from the Billings AAUW affiliate.

For these and other contributions, the Board of Regents of Higher Education is pleased to confer upon Dr. Deborah Schaffer the rank of Professor Emerita of English, Philosophy & Modern Languages at Montana State University Billings and wishes her well for many years into the future.

The Department of English, Philosophy, & Modern Languages is nominating Dr. Rachel Schaffer for emerita status upon her retirement based on the many contributions she has made to our students, department, College, and University over 40 years of service.

EXPLANATION

During 40 years of teaching and service at Eastern Montana College/Montana State University Billings, Dr. Rachel Schaffer taught a variety of linguistics, writing, and literature courses, first from 1984 to 1985 for Indian Career Services, where she focused on basic writing skills for Native American students, and then for the Department of English (Philosophy, and Modern Languages) from 1985 until her retirement in 2023. She served as Chair of the department from 2018 through 2022. She was the first recipient of the Cox Fellowship at EMC in 1988, and over the years, she also received two MSUB Outstanding Faculty Awards, three student-selected ASMSUB Outstanding Faculty Awards, an Outstanding Advisor Award, and a Chancellor’s Star Award. For 35 years, she served as faculty advisor for MSU Billings’ branch of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society, helping to organize the Writers Roundup book signing and sale to raise funds for scholarships for English majors and the annual campus poetry contest to give student poets a chance to have their talents recognized.

Dr. Schaffer received her BA in Linguistics and French from the University of Rochester, and her MA and Ph.D. in Linguistics from The Ohio State University. While her graduate research and dissertation focused on acoustic phonetics, after joining Eastern Montana College in 1983, her research interests shifted to mystery and detective fiction. She published more than 25 essays and reference articles on a variety of mystery writers and their work, along with delivering conference papers and editing a special issue of Clues: A Journal of Detection on Irish author Tana French. She has served since 2006 on the Clues editorial board, reviewing submissions and writing book reviews of critical works about mystery and detective fiction. As a lifetime member of the Popular Culture Association, she also contributed dozens of book reviews of newly published mystery novels to the Reading List newsletter of the Mystery and Detective Fiction Area and for several years led the Dove Award selection process to recognize outstanding scholarly contributions to the study of mystery and detective fiction.

In campus service, Dr. Schaffer coordinated the selection process for 13 English scholarships from 1989 to her retirement in 2023 and organized the Lyle Cooper Award selection process for the outstanding graduating senior in English. She also served four terms on the EMC/MSU Billings Foundation Board of Trustees, as well as on numerous university committees. In the community, she served on the Board of the YWCA; has been a member of the local Billings branch of AAUW since 1983, serving on the Board and Program Committee; and has also edited the Congregation Beth Aaron newsletter since 1988.
