ABOUT YELLOWJACKET ATHLETICS Home of the Yellowjackets, the Montana State University Billings department of intercollegiate athletics supports 15 men’s and women’s varsity sports which compete in the NCAA at the Division II level. MSUB is one of 11 full-time members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, which features 11 championships throughout each academic year. More than 240 student-athletes compete on MSUB’s teams, and members of Yellowjacket teams posted a collective 3.15 grade point average during the 2015-16 academic year. MSUB-sponsored varsity sports include men’s and women’s teams in basketball, cheer/ stunt, cross-country, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track & field, as well as baseball, softball, and women’s volleyball. Highlights from the 2015-16 season included a second NCAA West Region Championships berth for MSUB’s women’s basketball team in the last three years, as the Yellowjackets played their way to the title game of the GNAC tournament before advancing. Junior Alisha Breen led the GNAC in scoring with 17.4 points per game, and senior Janiel Olson broke the school’s career rebounding record. Senior Della Lyle stole the show on the track for the ‘Jackets, becoming the first All-American in school history on the women’s side. She was selected as the GNAC Newcomer of the Year in both indoor and outdoor seasons, and represented the Yellowjackets at the NCAA National Championships. On the baseball diamond, the ‘Jackets claimed their second straight GNAC regular-season title, setting a program record with 30 victories including their first-ever postseason win in the conference tournament. Junior Cody Cooper shattered the school record with 106 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings, and senior Luke Reinschmidt closed his historic career by earning first-team all-region honors for a second straight season. MSUB’s men’s soccer team also had a highlight year, posting its first winning season since 2012. Sophomore Ricardo Palomino led the entire NCAA west region in goals with 16, and earned first-team all-region honors. In women’s soccer, the ‘Jackets advanced to their third GNAC Championship tournament in the last four seasons, after posting a second consecutive winning year. MSUB hosted three conference championship events and an NCAA Division II West Region Championship for the first time ever during the 2014-15 year. The ‘Jackets welcomed more than 30 teams to Billings on Nov. 22, 2014 for the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Amend Park, hosted the 2014-15 Men’s and Women’s GNAC Basketball Championships from March 4-7, 2015 at Alterowitz Gym, and capped off the year by hosting the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships from May 7-8 at Dehler Park. MSUB also serves as the host of the largest NCAA Division II softball tournament, the Desert Stinger Classic, which was played for the sixth year in a row from Feb. 12-14, 2015 at Majestic Park in Las Vegas.

ABOUT YELLOWJACKET ATHLETICS The 2014-15 year also featured three All-American athletes from MSUB, including senior Kayleen Goggins (women’s basketball), junior Robert Peterson (men’s indoor track & field), and senior Brody Miller (baseball). Miller was also selected as the 201415 GNAC Male Athlete of the Year for all sports, just the second baseball player in the conference’s history to win the award, and the second student-athlete from MSUB to collect the honor as he joined women’s basketball star Bobbi Knudsen (2013-14). Capturing GNAC crowns during the 2014-15 year were MSUB’s baseball and softball teams. The Yellowjackets won the 2015 GNAC Softball Championships and advanced all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II West Region Championships in May. MSUB’s women’s soccer team also competed for a GNAC Championship title, finishing in second place in the conference standings and earning the No. 2 seed into the conference tournament in the fall of 2014. In men’s golf, senior Jake Hedge also represented the ‘Jackets at the NCAA Regional level, competing as an individual in the championships in Monterey Bay, Calif., from May 6-8, 2015. In 2013-14, the MSUB women’s basketball team made history by winning the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season title and advancing to the NCAA Division II west regional championship game. MSUB’s 2013-14 women’s basketball team joined the Yellowjackets’ 1998-99 squad as the only two in program history to advance to the NCAA regional title game. The latter continued on to the Elite Eight, marking the furthest-advancing MSUB team in the school’s history. In 2012, the MSUB softball team won the GNAC regular season title with a 32-18 overall record and earned hosting privileges for the 2013 conference softball tournament. The 2012 Yellowjacket men’s basketball team also earned a conference title, defeating the University of Alaska Anchorage 74-70 in the GNAC tournament championship game. Formerly known as Eastern Montana College, MSUB athletics stem back to the 1927-28 season, the year in which the university was founded. The Yellowjackets have competed in a number of different conferences throughout the years, and prior to the 1980-81 season the athletic department transitioned from the NAIA to competing at the NCAA Division II level. The MSUB Hall of Fame and Distinction inducted its inaugural class in 1990 and serves as a tribute towards influential figures on and off the court, in both current and retired sports.

‘JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITY MSUB’s men’s and women’s golf teams dedicate significant time each school year to give back to the Billings community through various service and engagement activities. The Yellowjackets visited local hospitals and worked with patients, lending a hand to those in need while representing the navy and gold.

The golf teams were major contributors to MSUB’s athletics department’s more than 1,400 community service hours registered during the 201516 academic year, and the ‘Jackets will continue their community service and engagement initiatives beginning again in the 2016 fall season.

Larson, Hafer aces in the hole for MSUB Golf Monday, October 12, 2015 Having already each hit a hole-in-one, freshmen Scott Larson and Shealyn Hafer are off to a roaring start in their young collegiate golf careers at MSUB. MSUB SPORTS – Scott Larson will never forget the first swing of his college golf career. Stepping into the tee box on the 11th hole at Heritage Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton, Colo., on Sept. 14, Montana State University Billings’ Larson wasn’t sure what to expect in his debut tournament. Larson has been competitively golfing since he was 14, but his ultimate goal of becoming a collegiate golfer was about to come true as he prepared to tee off. Gazing down the long, 192-yard par-3 hole, Larson reached for his trusty 6-iron as he had done countless times before. It was the same 6-iron he gripped as a junior at Glacier High School in his home town of Kalispell, Mont., when he connected perfectly on the par-3, sixth hole at Northern Pines Golf Club and watched his ball drop into the cup 192 yards away for a hole-in-one. This time sporting the navy and gold in his first tournament as a Yellowjacket, the setting – from distance to par to club selection – was identical, and what happened next was all but fate. Somewhere embedded in Larson’s muscle memory was a snapshot of his perfect swing two years earlier, a backswing-to-follow-through in perfect synchrony that his body was able to summon a second time. Same distance. Same club. Same swing. Same result.

8 | 2016 MSUB Golf Media Guide | @MSUBGolf | www.msubsports.com

After one hole, Larson was 2-under par with an eagle on the leaderboard. After one hole, Larson had drilled an ace in the most improbable, unforgettable, and unrepeatable fashion imaginable. “No one knew it went in, but when we all got down there we realized it was in the cup,” Larson said. “On this one I was a little more in shock than my first one. There was more emotion behind it since it was my first swing.” MSUB women’s golf freshman Shealyn Hafer was in the first tee box 30 miles north at Fox Hills Golf Club, in Longmont, Colo., getting set for the first shot of her career when she heard of Larson’s ace. MSUB head coach Shawn O’Brien was offering Hafer advice as she prepared to swing away, while checking the live stat updates on his phone from the men’s tournament. “He told me right before my first shot, but it didn’t really dawn on me until after the round,” Hafer said. “It is crazy cool to have your first college shot be a hole-in-one. I had never seen one; no one I had ever been on a team with had ever hit one before.” “I couldn’t quite decide if it was a typo, or if Scott had made a swing that he would never forget,” O’Brien said regarding his reaction to the live update on his phone. “It took me a second to process that they had started in a shotgun format, and that was his first-ever collegiate swing.” LATER CAME HAFER Fast-forward three weeks, to Sand Hollow Resort in St. George, Utah where Butte, Mont., native Hafer and the Yellowjackets were competing in their fourth-consecutive road tournament. Hafer had reached the 15th hole in Round 1 on Oct. 5, and an already frustrating round took a further turn south. Left of the green on the seemingly simple 110-yard par-3 chip shot was a drastic drop off surrounded by red rocks where ill-struck tee shots went to turn into double bogeys. Hafer knew she needed to aim small and miss small, but she winced as her Pro V1 released from her pitching wedge and faded short and to the left of the green. She knew immediately she had missed her mark, and four strokes later her scorecard threatened to give under the weight of her pen as she inked a frustrated ‘5’. Working her way through the course a second time the following day, Hafer had a chance at redemption on the hole that had cost her two strokes. “To the right, the green slopes and there’s a side hill,” Hafer said. “I figured that if I was able to catch that, it would be perfect.” Somewhat caught in between club lengths, Hafer elected this time to go with a half swing using her 9-iron in hopes of playing it safe. As quickly as she had lost two strokes the day before she gained them right back as her aim was true on the right side of the green. “It hit the side of the hill, and it didn’t even roll,” Hafer said. “It jammed into the hole really fast. I saw it go in and I started freaking out.”

Though O’Brien was at the course for the Yellowjackets’ second ace in as many weeks, it wasn’t until after Hafer’s round that he learned of her incredible shot. “I had seen Shea a couple holes prior to her hitting it, but when her round was over I was still on the course,” O’Brien recalled. “She sent me a text message and told me to come see her in the club house. I just had this crazy odd feeling, so I responded back, ‘hole in one?’” O’Brien’s hypothesis was right on the money, as he congratulated Hafer when she gave him the news. Meanwhile, Larson and his male teammates were in their hotel when fellow freshman Braden Luper made the announcement. “Braden said, ‘Shea just hit a hole-in-one!’” Larson said. “I had never been on a team with someone who hit one before so that was pretty exciting.” “I hadn’t been playing as well as I wanted to, and that hole-in-one was kind of a reassurance for me,” Hafer said. “Between my swing change and everything else I have been going through, it was a good boost of confidence.” ONE(S) FOR THE AGES “Hopefully it doesn’t take me another five years before we see this happen again.” – MSUB head coach Shawn O’Brien on his team’s two recent holes-in-one. A feat considered rare across the global spectrum of sport, the hole-in-one pops up from time to time as a reminder of the brilliant simplicity, incredible difficulty, and sometimes pure luck that goes into a golf shot. Any average golfer has the ability to hit an iron shot 100-plus yard: Brilliant simplicity. To analyze the number of factors from wind to slope to club range involved with a given shot is where it gets tricky: Incredible difficulty. Both of these combined with a degree of sheer luck play into the feat recently accomplished by Larson and Hafer. It’s impossible to say when those three factors may combine again and result in the perfect outcome. “The first hole-in-one I was able to witness was (alumnus) Jake Letman hitting one as a freshman in Hawaii,” O’Brien said. “I had to wait five more years to have our program hit two within two weeks of each other.” Perhaps it will be another five years or more before the next Yellowjacket hole-in-one. Perhaps it will come when MSUB resumes its season at the Yellowjacket Spring Invitational in March, as it nearly did on Friday at the Yellowjackets’ home course of Pryor Creek Golf Club. Another freshman on the team this year, Kortney McNeil made solid contact on the par-3 second hole of the Elmer Links Course, and watched as her tee shot punctured the green, kicked off of the pin, and came to rest a foot away from the cup. Awaiting the arrival of the ball in a golf cart just off of the green was O’Brien, who momentarily thought he had witnessed yet another ace. “I thought the ball flight looked good initially off of the club, I lost it for a little while, and then picked it up about 20 feet from the ground,” O’Brien said. “When the ball hit, it blew part of the back of the cup out. I jumped out of my cart because I was in disbelief that it hadn’t gone in.” Narrowly missing the opportunity to fish McNeil’s ball out of the cup, O’Brien settled for reconstructing the hole in advance of McNeil’s tap-in birdie putt. “In a matter of three weeks, our golf program hit the back of the cup three times,” O’Brien commented on the three incredible tee shots. The simple question that remains for the Yellowjackets: Who’s next? 10 | 2016 MSUB Golf Media Guide | @MSUBGolf | www.msubsports.com

3 from MSUB Golf earn academic all-GNAC honors Wednesday, April 20, 2016 Haley Shackelford earns academic all-conference for the second straight year, and Bailee Dexter and Connor Miele are first-time selections to represent the Yellowjacket golf program. PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior Haley Shackelford earned academic all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honors for the second straight year, and Connor Miele and Bailee Dexter also represented the Montana State University Billings golf programs by earning the award announced on Wednesday. “I am very proud of Haley, Bailee, and Connor for their academic honors,” said MSUB head coach Kevin Woodin. “They have done an excellent job of being leaders on the course and in the classroom. It is very hard to balance your time effectively but all of them have responded to that challenge.” Shackelford entered the 2016 GNAC Championships with a scoring average of 81.4 and had a pair of top-10 finishes for MSUB in her third season. Shackelford holds a 3.48 overall grade point average and is studying special education. She was inducted into MSUB’s Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society earlier this year, and she was one of eight golfers in the GNAC on the women’s side to be selected to the all-conference team for a second time. Dexter was the Yellowjackets’ top finisher at the conference tournament for the second year in-a-row, as she matched her accomplishment last year with another sixth-place finish. Dexter is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English and holds a stellar 3.91 grade point average. Miele was the top golfer for the ‘Jackets this year, leading the team with a 14th-place finish at the GNAC Championships in his first season competing at MSUB. Miele is a business management major and holds a 3.32 cumulative grade point average.

Yellowjacket AD Krista Montague Krista (Fjelstad) Montague is entering her 14th year of employment at MSU Billings and her fourth as director of intercollegiate athletics in 2016-17. Montague led the athletic department’s 240-plus student-athletes to another successful year on the playing field and in the classroom in 2015-16, as the cumulative grade point average surpassed 3.0 and 48 individuals earned academic all-conference honors. Montague will also serve as a mentor for the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association Mentoring Program starting in the 2016-17 academic year. In 2014-15, MSUB hosted several marquee championship events for the first time ever. In November, MSUB welcomed the 2014 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Region Championships to Billings, which included participation from 32 teams across the region. MSUB also hosted the 2014-15 GNAC Basketball Championships and the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships during the academic year. MSUB’s softball team advanced to the NCAA Division II West Region Championship game after winning the GNAC Championships title, and the Yellowjackets’ baseball team also claimed a conference title during 2014-15. During her first year at the helm of the athletic department, Montague successfully secured hosting responsibilities for the upcoming 2014 NCAA cross country west regional championships and 2014-15 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships. Montague began her employment with MSUB in July of 2002 as the department’s development and marketing director. Shortly after being hired, she was appointed to the position of senior woman administrator, making her the highest-ranking female administrator in the athletic department. When Montana State University Billings announced the hiring of Montague as its new athletic director on May 10, 2013, it became the first NCAA institution in Montana to have a female athletic director. In 2005, the titles of assistant AD and NCAA compliance coordinator were added to her duties, while she still managed the corporate partnership program and special events for the department. In 2009, Montague was promoted to associate AD. As associate AD, her primary responsibilities included overseeing and managing NCAA II compliance for each of the 17 sports and co-ed cheer, as well serving as a crucial member of the athletics administration team and academic liaison between the different campus constituencies and athletics. Montague, a native of Eastern Montana, received her undergraduate degree in business administration with an option in marketing in 1999 from MSU Billings. Montague was a four-year letterwinner for the MSUB women’s basketball team and left the program with the school record for career free-throw percentage. As a senior, Montague helped MSU Billings to the West Region Championship and the program's first and only Elite Eight appearance in women’s basketball. Montague is a member of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) and NACWAA (National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators), as well as various other state and local organizations. In 201112, she served on NACWAA’s Legislation & Governance Committee, and also served as a member of the NCAA II Softball West Regional Advisory Committee in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Before joining the MSU Billings athletic staff full time, Montague was the athletic department’s part-time corporate partnership director and held various positions for DD Marketing (Pueblo, Colo.), Norwest Bank, and Billings Clinic. Montague recently completed a master's degree in public relations at MSU Billings. She lives in West Billings with her husband Brent and two daughters Shayla (14) and Allie (12). 12 | 2016 MSUB Golf Media Guide | @MSUBGolf | www.msubsports.com

Interim Head Coach Kevin Woodin Kevin Woodin serves as the interim head men’s and women’s golf coach after assuming the role in December of 2015. He is also in his 13th year as the head women’s basketball coach at MSUB. In 2015-16, MSUB’s women’s golf team was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference academic team champion. Under his guidance, freshman Kortney McNeil broke MSUB’s record for a two-round score with a 146, and earned second-team all-GNAC honors. Woodin was also the head boys golf coach at Billings West High School in 2015-16. He was named the Montana coach of the year after his team set an all-time Montana Class AA scoring record with a 580 score at the two-day state tournament. He also led the girls’ team to a fourth-place finish in 2015-16. Woodin previously served as MSUB’s women’s golf head coach from 2007-09, a span during which he took the team from last place to second place in the conference. The second team Woodin coached also qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships, and he recruited one of the top golfers in MSUB history in Kalli Stanhope in the fall of 2008. Stanhope advanced to the national tournament in the spring of 2009 in Findlay, Ohio, and still stands as the only female golfer at MSUB to achieve that feat. Stanhope also competed in basketball at MSUB for Woodin. Woodin was also a three-time Metro League boys high school coach of the year at O’Dea High School in Seattle during his five-year tenure in the 1990s. His boys team won three consecutive league championships, which were the first in the school’s history. O’Dea High School is also the alma mater of former 1992 Master’s champion and PGA hall-of-famer Fred Couples. Woodin is currently a Montana State Golf Association board member and the Montana State Junior Golf director for District #4. He is also an active volunteer for Yellowstone County Junior Golf, and is still an avid golfer and member at Laurel Golf Club. Woodin played collegiate golf in 1982-83 at the University of Montana, prior to the program being dropped after his freshman season.

Assistant Coach Marcus Drange Marcus Drange begins his third season as assistant golf coach after serving in the same capacity since the beginning of the 2014-15 season. Prior to becoming a coach, Drange participated in the Yellowjackets’ golf program for three seasons. Drange was selected as the team’s most improved player during the 2013-14 season, and was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year and an all-conference selection in 2011-12. During his career at MSUB, Drange notched three top-5 tournament finishes, and holds a career-low single-round mark of 66. MSUB women’s golf season preview: Familiar faces look to build on historic season Monday, September 12, 2016 With all six of last year’s players returning, MSUB’s women’s golf team looks to take another step forward in 2016-17 after posting the best team average in program history in 2015-16. BILLINGS, Mont. – After a record-setting team average of 316.0 in 2015-16, all six players from the Montana State University Billings women’s golf team return to the roster and are primed to take another stride as the 2016-17 season starts this week. The Yellowjackets will play their traditional match-play rounds against Rocky Mountain College on Thursday and Friday, with this year’s women’s event being tabbed the Leslie Spalding Cup after one of Billings’ local golf legends. “I am excited Leslie accepted our offer of naming our annual match play trophy after her, and I am excited to see how our student-athletes compete in the upcoming rounds against Rocky,” said MSUB head coach Kevin Woodin. “Our golfers are really looking forward to the event. It is a unique and fun format for the players, and there will be a lot of great golfers participating.” The two-day event will feature action at Lake Hills Golf Club on Thursday starting at 1 p.m., and Peter Yegen Golf Club on Friday at 1 p.m. The format on the first day will include nine holes of 4-ball followed by nine holes of singles, and on the second day the teams will play nine holes of alternate shot followed by nine holes of singles. It will be preceded by a kickoff banquet at MSUB on Wednesday evening, where KTVQ’s Casey Conlon will serve as master of ceremonies. Pairings for the weekend and introductions will occur at the banquet. The women’s first full tournament of the year is scheduled for Sept. 19-20 at Western New Mexico University, which will be the first of four events in the fall season for the ‘Jackets. The team will also play tournaments at Rocky Mountain College on Oct. 3-4, Saint Martin’s University on Oct. 7-8, and at Western Washington University on Oct. 10-11.

Leading the six-player team of returners is sophomore Kortney McNeil, who garnered second-team all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honors as a true freshman in 2015-16. McNeil broke MSUB’s school record for a two-round score on three different occasions last year, and posted the second-lowest season scoring average in school history at 78.2 strokes per round. That scoring total ranked seventh in the GNAC, and she came within one stroke of tying MSUB’s single-round record with a 71 at last year’s NCAA Division II National Preview meet. “Kortney is a really strong golfer, and she played a lot during the summer,” said Woodin. “She has the ability to really go low, and I think she’s going to have an excellent fall season.” Back for her fourth year with the ‘Jackets is senior captain Haley Shackelford, who posted a scoring average of 82.0 last season. The Gillette, Wyo., native had one top-5 finish and tied her career-low with a 75 at the WNMU Spring Invite last season. She is a two-time academic all-conference pick, and was second-team all-league as a sophomore in 2014-15. “Haley is a lead-by-example kind of person, and she played some very good golf last spring,” said Woodin. “I will look for her to have another solid season, and she is a consistent player.” Juniors Sammy Walter and Bailee Dexter also return with experience, each contributing throughout the year in 2015-16. Walter’s peak, like Shackelford’s, also came at the WNMU Invite last spring as she too posted a season-best single-round score of 75. Walter finished the year with a scoring average of 81.4 for fourth-best on the team. Dexter led the ‘Jackets at the GNAC Championships for the second season in-a-row, as she had her second straight sixth-place finish at the premier event of the year. The Townsend, Mont., native became just the fifth golfer in MSUB history to average below 80.0 in a year, as she checked in at 79.6. “Bailee and Sammy both hit the ball very long, and when their short game is on, they can compete with anybody,” Woodin said. “They have improved a lot and have definitely put in the time, and they have a sense of composure out there on the golf course.” Sophomores Anna DeMars and Shealyn Hafer also return to the program, after promising seasons to start their careers. DeMars ranked third on the team with a scoring average of 79.6, and had three top-5 finishes on the season. One of those finishes – at the RMAC North tournament last September – earned her GNAC Golfer of the Week honors. The highlight of Hafer’s season was a hole-in-one at Dixie State during the fall portion of the schedule. Hafer finished the year with an average of 85.0 overall, while competing in 14 rounds over seven events.

MSUB men’s golf season preview: Mike Grob Cup kicks off this week Monday, September 12, 2016 MSUB’s men’s golf team kicks off its 2016-17 season this week with its annual match-cup play against Rocky Mountain College. BILLINGS, Mont. – Kicking off its fall season this week, the Montana State University Billings men’s golf team is getting prepared for a full slate of action over the next month. The Yellowjackets will begin their year with their traditional match play round against Rocky Mountain College, with this year’s event being titled the Mike Grob Cup in honor of the local golf legend. “I was very excited when Mike accepted our offer of naming our annual match-play cup after him,” said MSUB head coach Kevin Woodin. “He is a Billings golf legend and his career and contributions to golf have been remarkable.” The two-day event will feature action at Lake Hills Golf Club on Thursday starting at 1 p.m., and Peter Yegen Golf Club on Friday at 1 p.m. The team’s first tournament of the year is scheduled for Sept. 23-24 at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey, Wash. The men’s squad will also play tournaments at Western Washington University on Sept. 26-27, Rocky Mountain College on Oct. 3-4, and at Concordia University (Ore.) on Oct. 17-18.

Leading MSUB’s team this year will be returning seniors Connor Miele and Michael Porter. Miele led MSUB at last year’s Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, shooting a three-round total of 219 (72-70-77) to tie for 14th place. The Everett, Wash., native had a pair of top-5 finishes last season, and led the team with seven par rounds as a junior. Porter is another key returner, after leading the team with a scoring average of 74.6 strokes a season ago. The Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, native also had the team’s lowest individual round with a 67 last spring, and matched Miele with two top-5 finishes as a junior. “I expect a lot out of them, both as leaders and as players,” Woodin commented on his top returners. “Connor is our returning captain from last year, and Michael is a very consistent player who did a fabulous job as a junior.” Scott Larson and Austin Walter are MSUB’s other two returners who have experience, while sophomore Dylan Meccage is set to make his Yellowjacket debut after being sidelined with injuries. Larson stole headlines with his very first swing as a collegiate golfer, which landed in the cup as he aced his first-ever hole last fall. Overall on the year Larson ranked fourth on the team with a scoring average of 78.3 and had one top-10 finish. Steadily improving throughout the year, Walter put together his best round last spring with a 73 at the Western New Mexico Invitational. He averaged a score of 79.2 overall on the season, and competed in 21 rounds in his debut season with MSUB. The team’s two new additions figure to contribute immediately, with freshmen Caleb Stetzner and Garrett Woodin bringing impressive prep resumes to the Yellowjackets’ program. Stetzner, a native of Anaconda, Mont., won the 2015 Montana Class A state title in golf and was a twotime division champion. As of last fall, Stetzner had 13 tournament wins and a career-best single-round score of 70. Woodin, a Billings West High School graduate and son of Coach Woodin, placed in the top-5 in 6 of 7 events he competed in as a senior, and led his team to the Montana Class AA state title. Woodin won the Billings Invitational on Aug. 24-25, 2015, with a two-round score of 142 (70-72).

New Faces: MSUB golf freshman Kortney McNeil Monday, May 2, 2016 By: Rio Frame, MSUB Media Relations Intern Recently completing her first season as a Yellowjacket, freshman Kortney McNeil is already rewriting the school record books as one of the top golfers in program history. MSUB SPORTS – Kortney McNeil was a successful golfer long before she joined the Montana State University Billings women’s golf team. “I think one of my defining moments as a golfer was winning state my freshman year,” reminisced McNeil about her days at Billings Senior High School. “Winning got me more hooked into golf than any other sport. At that point I don’t think I had really realized how much I loved it.” After one season with the Yellowjackets, McNeil is already one of the best golfers in school history. She bettered the school record for a tworound score three different times in the fall season, and came within a single stroke of the Yellowjacket single-round record. Her 147 (71-76) at the NCAA Division II National Preview meet in October helped her team set a school record with an overall round of 297, the first sub-300 round ever for the women’s golf program. Her 2015-16 season average of 78.2 strokes per round was just shy of the MSUB record of 78.0 (Kalli Stanhope, 2011-12), and was good enough to earn her second-team all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honors with the seventh-best average in the league. “I chose MSUB because it seemed like a perfect fit,” McNeil said. “I knew I would be close to home and it had my major, so it just seemed like the right place to be.” McNeil is working towards earning a nursing degree. “I felt nursing would be very rewarding, yet challenging. Every day would present itself with something new and I enjoy helping people,” noted McNeil on her choice. This young athlete’s relaxed demeanor combined with her calming voice and presence is a perfect quality for the people that she plans to help during her nursing career.

36 | 2016 MSUB Golf Media Guide | @MSUBGolf | www.msubsports.com

“I’ve always been impressed with the way the Kortney competes,” commented MSUB head coach Kevin Woodin about his freshman athlete. “She impresses me with her calm demeanor and her ability to focus on one shot at a time. She had great freshman year.” “I’ve known Coach Woodin since I was really little, so having him come in as our new coach the second half of our season has been a really easy transition,” said McNeil. Coach Woodin was not the only person from the team that McNeil was familiar with coming into her freshman year. “I actually had played golf with Sammy Walter all throughout high school,” commented McNeil on her teammate. “She was kind of a deciding factor for choosing MSUB as well.” Walter was the lead golfer for the Yellowjackets during her freshman year in 2014-15. “Sammy is one of the people who I look up to most on the team because I’ve known and golfed with her so long that she knows my game and I know hers. If I’m feeling down I know that I can talk to her about anything,” McNeil stated happily. Walter is also a part of one of McNeil’s favorite memories playing golf. “We were in high school and we both shot really close scores to each other. We were at the same course, but we were like a group away from each other,” smiled McNeil as she recalled one of her favorite days. The two girls kept tabs on each other to see how each was doing. “It was exciting to be that close at the end of the day to each other’s score,” said McNeil. McNeil notes that not having any seniors on the team has not affected its abilities within the GNAC. “I think with how close we all are playing definitely makes us a stronger team overall,” said McNeil. The women had a good showing at the conference tournament in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho in late April, with McNeil earning the 18th spot in the tournament. “I wanted to go in with a lot of confidence and to know that I was capable of shooting what I could,” noted McNeil. Playing golf is difficult because of all the techniques, head games, and outside elements that can affect a player during her tournament. For McNeil she believes that her short game is one of her biggest strengths when she’s out on the course. “I would say that putting is one of my strengths,” comments McNeil. “I’m usually pretty good at staying fairly calm out there, and I don’t get too upset or up and down in my game.” However, if McNeil is having an off game she has a way to keep herself centered. “I think the main thing when you are having a bad round is to just try and stay calm. I’ve had some rough tournaments where I learned a lot about myself and how not to give up on myself,” McNeil commented. “Everybody has a bad day, but to see how you are as a golfer you have to come back the next weekend and play how you know you can.” McNeil is extremely knowledgeable and mature for her age, especially when she talks about how to handle tough situations. Namely, her battle with scoliosis has forced McNeil to constantly deal with adversity, and overcome challenges within her sports on a regular basis.

2016 MSUB Golf Media Guide | @MSUBGolf | www.msubsports.com | 37

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine and not something a golf player wants to have to deal with. “I’ve been trying to manage with doing physical therapy,” McNeil noted about the struggle to keep herself healthy. McNeil supplements her golfing with core workouts and back strengthening exercises. “I actually found out a couple weeks ago that I don’t have to have surgery for a couple more years.” Along with her back exercises, McNeil enjoys doing yoga to strengthen all her muscles. Not only does McNeil work on mastering her short game, but she focuses a lot on her longer game too. “One of my weaknesses is my long game. I’m not a super long hitter, but I’m usually pretty straight,” said McNeil about the focus she has spent working with her driver out of the tee box. “I think that Kortney has adjusted to collegiate golf really well. The courses are longer and tougher, but she is off to a great start,” commented Woodin. “I’ve never played golf in the spring before,” commented McNeil on her two-season sport. “That was kind of strange jumping into playing so early this year and not playing basketball either.” During her high school career at Billings Senior, McNeil participated during the winter sports season in basketball, as well as golf during the fall. “I did enjoy being able to focus just on one sport and give it all of my attention instead of a couple, like during high school,” said MSUB’s star golfer. To keep herself sharp for her fall and spring seasons McNeil spends a lot of her free time working on areas she needs to improve in her golf game. “During the off season you know your game and what you need to work on, so you can spend time focusing on that,” said McNeil. She is a frequent visitor to Mitchell’s during the colder months of the year when she is unable to actually hit the course. “You can also find a few tournaments here and there to play in to keep that competitive edge.”

38 | 2016 MSUB Golf Media Guide | @MSUBGolf | www.msubsports.com

The snow and frigid air during the winter months keeps a lot of golfers away from the courses, making it more difficult to work on their game, but during the summer months it’s a different story. McNeil spends a lot of her free days golfing. However, this dry and fairly warm winter gave the golfer the opportunity to play year-round. “I don’t think I’ve ever been able to play golf in January, but this year I did,” said McNeil excitedly. “The grass is still not the best during the winter, but you are still getting to swing your clubs.” McNeil started playing golf when she was a very young girl with her father and brother. “My older brother, Treven, and my dad, Brian, were always big golfers and so I’d always tag along,” remembered the freshman about how it all started 13 years ago. “It has always been a family thing, way before it was competitive.” Woodin believes that in the next couple years, McNeil’s successful career with continue. “I think if she continues to put in the time, the sky's the limit for Kortney.” McNeil’s family never could have guessed how successful the little six-year-old golfer would become as a Senior Bronc, winning state a couple of times, and then later being one of the best golfers that the Yellowjacket program has had at only the beginning of her collegiate career. McNeil has not let anything stop her, from a bad game to scoliosis, to keep her from her goals of continuing to do the sport that she loves.

Walters’ World: Sibling connection deeply rooted in Yellowjacket Athletics Wednesday, March 23, 2016 By: Rio Frame, MSUB Media Relations Intern MSUB golfers Austin Walter and Sammy Walter are the latest in a family connection to Yellowjacket Athletics, carrying on the legacy of older sister Chelsey Walter who is a volleyball alumna. MSUB SPORTS – The average height of a pro golfer is between 5-foot-10 and 6-foot-1. Montana State University Billings freshman golfer, Austin Walter stands at around 6-foot-7. He towers above the rest of his teammates who are all coincidentally either 5-foot-10 or 6-foot-1. A taller golfer theoretically has an advantage of a larger arc swing, however timing and control are more difficult to control. For Austin to decide that golf was the sport that he wanted to play and continue into college demonstrates that he is not afraid of a challenge and that he is extremely mentally tough. This toughness that Austin, and his siblings Sammy Walter and Chelsey Walter display could have been learned from a family trip to Canada where they all went golfing. The Walter family consists of 2015 graduate and volleyball player Chelsey, sophomore women’s golf player Sammy, and Austin along with their parents Chris and Otto Walter. On said trip it was the siblings’ mother, Chris Walter’s turn in the tee box. She took her first swing, missed, let loose her second swing, missed, and her third swing was another miss. By this time her family was trying to stifle its laughter behind her. But by around her 12th try and first actual hit, the four others were falling out of their cart in hysterics over Chris’ obvious frustration and determination. Any child who grows up around that type of determination is bound to gain some of his own like Austin did. The freshman stated, “I think my mental toughness is my strength in golf.” His family would have to agree. “Austin’s calmness will get him anywhere that he wants to go,” noted both his parents. As for getting through bad rounds, Austin said, “You just have to take it one hole at a time. I try not to get ahead of myself.” Not only does Austin have to contend with his own mind during golf tournaments, but all the elements as well. “There are so many factors that go into golf that makes it so hard. I thought volleyball was hard, but there is so much more into golf than anyone really realizes,” remarked Chelsey, a first-team all-GNAC star her senior season with the ‘Jackets. “It makes me have a deeper respect for my siblings. They work hard at their sport.”

There is an uncanny resemblance between the entire Walter family. Upon first impression this family of athletes would probably be stereotyped as basketball players for how tall they stand. Each family member even mentioned how basketball was a fun pastime, sometimes with it even getting fairly competitive. However, the only basketball player out of the five was Chris. As a whole the Walters have dabbled in all kinds of sports, such as soccer, baseball, softball, football, golf, and volleyball. Chelsey noted how golf was something that the whole family could do together. They even have a tradition of going out to golf every Mother’s Day to spend the day as a family. “My dad would get us to go out in the summer and spring to play, but I never played it like Sammy and Austin did,” said Chelsey. “Our cousins, aunts, and uncles play golf too.” “Sammy and I grew up playing at Par 3, a local Billings golf course,” remembered Austin. “Mom would drop us off there in the morning and we would just play little competitions with each other all day.” Sammy and Austin enjoyed playing on the same team throughout high school as well. All three siblings attended Billings Senior High. “I always try to beat her, but she beats me a lot,” commented Austin. It's no surprise Austin has difficulty competing with the family’s middle sibling, as Sammy played her way to second-team all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honors as a true freshman. One of the team’s most consistent players from start-to-finish in 2014-15, Sammy led the team with a scoring average of 81.2 and had three top-10 finishes overall in an outstanding first season. Austin chose to attend MSUB to be close to home as well as the opportunity to receive a scholarship. His parents decided that their children were responsible enough and mature enough to handle their finances on their own once college came into the picture. This philosophy has helped each of their three children learn responsibility and humility, and a down-to-earth sense of genuineness radiates from the siblings. When asked whether the fact that his two older sisters had decided to go to MSUB had influenced his decision to attend there, Austin responded accordingly. “Yes, Sammy and Chelsey going to MSUB made it a comfortable choice for me, plus I already liked everyone on the golf team.” “I told Sammy and Austin not to overthink the whole process of choosing which school to go to. I just let them know how much my time at MSUB meant to me,” commented Chelsey. “You can have all the same college experiences in your hometown, and get to meet all these new and exciting people.”

54 | 2016 MSUB Golf Media Guide | @MSUBGolf | www.msubsports.com

Chelsey had this to say about her time MSUB, “My MSUB experience was one-hundred percent sports and I’ve made some of my best friends from the experience. It is something that I miss every day.” She still tries to attend some of her former teammates’, as well as, her siblings’ athletic events since graduating from the university last December. She plans to go watch Sammy and Austin at the GNAC Championships in April with their mother in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. “Our parents try to get to as many tournaments as they can,” remarked Sammy. Austin’s siblings also help him strive to better himself academically. “They are all so smart, I feel like I need to work on that too,” commented Austin. Academically, Austin is trying to work through a lot of his general course requirements, and still supplement them with some accounting classes for his overall business major. “The transition from high school to college was a little rough first semester,” noted the golfer. “I feel like it affected my golf game slightly too, but this semester is way better.” Chelsey commented on how her brother and sister have come more out of their comfort zones since enrolling in college. “They have always been a little more on the quiet side growing up,” said Chelsey. Her thoughts correspond with her parents who describe their two younger children as having calm demeanors. Golf is the only sport that technically has two seasons. They start competing in the fall, but their championship season does not start until spring. With the offseason landing in winter, Austin spent a lot of time at Mitchell’s, a place that has a golf simulator for him to practice with. He likes the two seasons because it means more time that he gets to play and golf competitively. When he can get out and golf on the courses around town, Austin likes to go to Briarwood. He spends about 10 hours a week golfing. Recently finishing his first tournament of the spring season, Austin had his best round to date as he shot a 74 on his birthday on Monday in California. Austin feels like his biggest accomplishment so far came as a high-schooler when he shot a 68 at Meadowlark Country Club in Great Falls, which is four under par for that particular course. He doesn’t want to settle there though, as his goal is to get a win sometime in his championship season. “I have not had a win yet, but that’s what I’m striving for. I have gotten second though,” stated Austin. He’s also looking for his team to get some wins and to just have some fun out there. Chelsey understands Austin’s level of motivation to win. “I loved playing at that competitive level. It is hard to leave that behind,” reminisced the former volleyball player. Luckily for Chelsey she can still live vicariously through her younger siblings. “My advice for Austin would be don’t take a second of your playing time for granted, because it is going to be gone in the blink of an eye,” recommended Chelsey. “I remember hearing people say that to me all through high school and college, and I always thought I had plenty of time left, but then senior night comes and it hits you like a ton of bricks. I hope they know that these are going to be some of the best times of their lives.

“I know that Sammy and Austin are going to be successful people. They are easy going and thoughtful people. I see Austin continuing to do what he loves, whether it is golf or something else,” bubbled the oldest sister. “My proudest moment with Austin would be when he decided to play golf in college. He is undecided with a lot of things so it was cool to watch him choose to continue golf.” For Austin’s father Otto his proudest moment while watching his son golf was during a state tournament. “We were coming to the 18th hole and Austin had the defending state champion playing behind him. Austin hit the ball and we thought it went over the crick, but we couldn’t find the ball. Austin took the ball back and hit again. By the time that he had finished the hole, which was a par five, he took a 12 or 13, but he stayed calm during the hole,” comments his dad while trying to hold back tears. “I have never been so proud of Austin.” Father and son seem to be very proud of each other. “The most influential person in my life would have to be my dad,” remarked Austin. “He is a really hard worker. He is also the one who initially introduced me to golf.” Austin continued to talk about how his father would fly back and forth from California every other week for his job before he retired. Besides his father, Connor Miele, a junior from Austin’s team, has also been an inspiration. “He continuously reminds me that he’s happy that I am a part of the team,” notes Austin. “He’s a really good teammate and captain. I met him before the beginning of the season last year.” The golf team appears not to be very affected from not having any senior leadership this year. “I count Connor as a senior. He’s mature and a good leader,” commented Austin. Sammy also noted that all of the women on the team feel so equal since there are no seniors on their roster either. “We all play about the same and have the same respect for each other,” said Sammy. The golf team’s first tournament of the season was played in Washington during the fall. “I shot 79 for all three rounds, which I guess is consistent, but par is 72 so I wasn’t very happy with it,” said Austin. “I have normally shot around par for my golf career, but I was not doing that last semester. I would like to redeem myself this second semester.” The team’s next tournament is at home at the Yellowjacket Spring Invitational starting Monday at Pryor Creek Golf Club in Huntley, Mont. The three siblings have many things in common. They all chose MSUB to continue doing a sport that they love, and carry on the active lifestyle that their parents instilled in them from a young age. They are genuine and unique individuals who make an impact in many people’s lives. As a family they seem to never run out of positive things to say about one another and others. With that type of support system behind Austin and Sammy, they are bound to succeed in anything that they put their minds to.
