MSUB junior designated hitter Adam Cox is selected as an NCBWA preseason All-American, after earning preseason allregion honors last week. Austin, Texas – Adding to his list of preseason accolades, Montana State University Billings junior Adam Cox has been named a preseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association announced on Wednesday. Cox, a right-handed relief pitcher and designated hitter, was named a preseason all-region honoree last week, and earned all-region honors as a sophomore a season ago. “Anytime you get a preseason award like that, it’s a testament to what you’ve done in the past,” said MSUB head coach Aaron Sutton. “Adam has become a great baseball player, and he really proved it last year. Going into his junior year, I think he, his teammates, and his coaches are excited to see what he can do this year as well.”


Cox posted a .371 batting average and nine home runs in his first season as a hitter, while leading the GNAC with 47 RBIs. He also led the team and ranked second in the GNAC with a .629 slugging percentage, and held an on-base percentage of .460. The Encino, Calif., native was a two-time GNAC Player of the Week selection, and started 43 games as a DH while playing in 47 total. He led the Yellowjackets with 21 multi-hit games, and 22 of his 59 hits on the season went for extra bases. In addition to his prowess at the plate, Cox was the closer on the mound for MSUB the last two years, and already holds the MSUB career record for saves with nine. A season ago, Cox held a 4.94 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings pitched in relief, and logged five saves in 17 appearances. Cox was also an academic all-GNAC and academic all-region selection a year ago. He and Western Oregon University junior pitcher Brady Miller were the only two from the GNAC to earn preseason All-America accolades. In 2016, Cox helped MSUB to its best season in program history, as the Yellowjackets went 30-20 overall and captured their second straight GNAC regular-season title with a mark of 23-15 in league play. MSUB, is scheduled to begin the season Feb. 11-12 with a three-game series at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.
