MSUB’s longest road trip of the year continues this week with five games at GNAC-leading Western Oregon after the ‘Jackets win a series 3-1 over Concordia on Sunday. MONMOUTH, Ore. – Winning three of its first four games in an overall nine-game road trip, the Montana State University Billings baseball team is set to continue Great Northwest Athletic Conference play this week with five more games at Western Oregon University. Playing only three games in Billings, Mont., on March 26-27, the fourth game of the series between MSUB and WOU was postponed due to weather and will be made up on Wednesday. The single, seven-inning contest will start at 3 p.m. Mountain time, and MSUB will play as the home team at the WOU baseball field. The teams will then meet in a normal, four-game series scheduled for Friday and Saturday with 2 p.m. start times both days. The series will be played in the 9-inning/7-inning doubleheader format, with live video and live statistics available through MSUB’s Stretch Internet portal here for all five games this week. “Playing five games at Western this week will be a good challenge for us,” said MSUB head coach Rob Bishop. “They always have a great club, so we definitely expect a battle.”

The Yellowjackets (21-17, 15-14 GNAC) are coming off of a 3-1 series win at Concordia University, sweeping a doubleheader on Sunday to keep pace in the conference standings. The Wolves (25-16, 20-11 GNAC) hold a half-game lead over second-place Northwest Nazarene University (24-16, 19-11), after losing 3 of 4 to the Crusaders over the weekend. Central Washington (22-19, 18-14) occupies the third-place spot in the standings and is three games ahead of MSUB in the win column. The top-three teams at the end of the year convene at the site of the regular-season champion for the GNAC Baseball Championships. DURBIN STAYS HOT AT THE PLATE: Senior Kyle Durbin reached base 11 times in 19 plate appearances, including seven hits and four walks to help MSUB to a 3-1 series win at Concordia. Durbin had his first career five-hit game on Sunday, as he went 5-for-6 with two runs scored, a double, and an RBI in a 10-9 win for MSUB. Durbin scored five runs overall in the series, and had two doubles and two RBIs in the second spot in the batting order. The senior third baseman continues to lead the team in hitting and now ranks second in the GNAC with a batting average of .371 on the season. He also leads the GNAC in on-base percentage at .465 this year. Now five hits away from 100 in his two-year career, Durbin has a chance to become just the ninth player in modern-day MSUB history to reach the century mark in hits. MSUB Career Hits Leaders Rk. UPPER-CLASS STARTERS: While Winslow may have had the best start on the mound of the weekend, senior Tanner Johnson and juniors Cody Cooper and Matt Hape were nearly equally impressive in their outings. Johnson had eight strikeouts and just one walk, giving up two earned runs in 7 1/3 innings and taking the tough loss in Game 1. Cooper was robbed of his seventh win of the year by a five-run, game-tying rally by CU in the ninth inning, but he had six strikeouts and had a big lead when he exited after 6 2/3 innings in Game 3. Hape tossed his third complete game in his last four outings, and earned the win in the series finale with three strikeouts and four runs allowed in seven innings. With his eight strikeouts, Johnson became the sixth in modern-day MSUB baseball history to reach 100 in his career. Cooper is now two strikeouts away from breaking the MSUB single-season record of 79 (Brady Muller, 2015), and remains in third place in the career category with 136. He continues to lead the GNAC in strikeouts (78), and innings pitched (76 2/3).

CLEAN DEFENSE CONTINUES FOR STERNHAGEN: Continuing an errorless streak at second base that began 34 games ago, senior Colter Sternhagen has now made 142 consecutive plays without a miscue. He had eight assists in the seriesopener against the ‘Cavs, and he and shortstop Corey Morris turned three more double plays to push their season total to 17. With 15 assists on the weekend, Sternhagen jumped to sole possession of fifth place in MSUB history in the category with 233 in his three seasons. MSUB Career Assists Leaders Rk. Name Assists 1. MORE OFFENSE, DEFENSE FROM COREY: Adding four hits and three RBIs, on the weekend, Morris continued his torrid streak at the plate and is now 14 for his last 35 (.400). He also has 11 of his 16 RBIs on the year in his last 12 games, and has scored seven times in that stretch. Morris was one away from his season-high in assists with five in Game 3 against the ‘Cavs, and he is right behind Sternhagen among the career leaders with 220 in just two seasons. LEIGHTON TAKES ADVANTAGE OF STARTS: Freshman Alec Leighton had four hits in 10 at-bats against Concordia, including an RBI-double and two runs scored in the second game of the series. WOU is being led offensively by Trevor Podratz, whose .367 batting average ranks third in the conference behind MSUB’s Durbin. Podratz has 11 doubles and four home runs, and he is one of five players on the roster with at least 27 RBIs. Brandon Oliver (.356) and Jay Leverett (.329) have also been offensive catalysts, and senior Cody Sullivan is having the best season of them all. Sullivan is hitting .308 with team highs in doubles (14) and home runs (6). Oliver is tied for the team lead in RBIs with 29, and Kyle Vanderkin also has six home runs and 29 driven in on the year.
