Former soccer stars Samantha Boehm Milroy and Tom Milroy, and women’s basketball standout Tanya Petersen Hauptman will become the three newest members of MSUB’s Athletics Hall of Fame & Distinction in January. MSUB SPORTS – Three former Yellowjackets will be inducted into the Montana State University Billings Athletics Hall of Fame and Distinction in January, as the athletics department announced Tuesday that former soccer players Samantha (Boehm) Milroy and Tom Milroy, and women’s basketball star Tanya (Petersen) Hauptman will comprise this year’s class. Tom Milroy will be the second men’s soccer player inducted, after Sam Charles entered MSUB’s Hall of Fame last year. Boehm will be the fifth women’s soccer player honored, while Hauptman will be the 24th women’s basketball player to earn the top award for a former Yellowjacket. “We couldn’t be more excited for this year’s hall of fame class, which includes representatives from some of MSUB’s most memorable teams from the past,” commented MSUB athletic director Krista Montague. “We are looking forward to this year’s ceremony, and to spending time reflecting on the memorable careers of Sam, Tom, and Tanya.”
The 27th annual Hall of Fame and Distinction induction ceremony will take place on Friday, January 13, 2017, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Billings. The event will start with a social at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the induction ceremony at 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased through MSUB Athletics at 406-657-2369. Boehm is a former all-region defender, who is currently No. 9 in MSUB women’s soccer history with 5,976 career minutes played. Her playing career spanned from 2006-10. The Wilsonville, Ore., native was a first-team all-Heartland Conference pick as a freshman in 2006, and helped the team transition into the Great Northwest Athletic Conference the following season. By her senior year, Boehm was a team captain and again earned first-team all-league recognition, while piloting the Yellowjackets to their first and only NCAA Division II West Region Championships tournament.
A four-year starter for the ‘Jackets, Boehm is one of the top defenders in program history.
Helping MSUB to a record of 13-6-1 in her final year, Boehm led her team to a 1-0 upset of No. 19 Cal State Los Angeles in the opening round of the national tournament. Playing under head coach Don Trentham, Boehm was picked as the MSUB Female Athlete of the Year for the 2010-11 academic year and was her team’s most valuable player.
Boehm also earned thirdteam National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American honors following her senior season in 2010, after being a three-time academic all-GNAC selection. “What an honor it is to be inducted into the MSUB Hall of Fame,” said Boehm. “There is no question that my time as a student-athlete at MSUB changed my life. Not only did the school provide me with five memorable years of soccer, but it positively impacted my future by bringing some incredible people and relationships into my life. To be honored like this is very humbling, but it is also a great reflection on my coaches and teammates who made it all possible.” While Boehm was helping MSUB make history in women’s soccer, Milroy was putting together an equally-impressive career on the men’s side. Tied for No. 1 in MSUB history, Milroy started all 72 games in his four-year career from 2006-09. Milroy was a first-team all-Heartland Conference pick in 2006, before helping MSUB with the transition to the GNAC the following year. A midfielder from Aberdeen, Scotland, Milroy was selected as his team’s most valuable player in 2009, after earning all-GNAC honors in both 2007 and 2008.
Milroy started all 72 games during his four-year career, compiling a 39-28-5 record with the ‘Jackets from 2006-09.
Milroy led the Yellowjackets to 10 or more wins – a total reached only four times in program history – in three of his four seasons. Led by then-head coach Dan McNally, Milroy was a member of the best MSUB team to date, which went 13-4-1 (.750) during his sophomore year in 2007. Milroy was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District first-team selection in 2008, after earning academic all-conference honors three times. “It is a true honor to be inducted into the Yellowjacket Hall of Fame,” said Milroy. “I would like to thank my coaches, teammates, and the athletics staff for helping make my time at MSUB so memorable. I am so grateful for the experiences I had and the people I met in my time as a student-athlete. I am proud to be part of the Yellowjacket family and I am humbled by this honor.” Petersen competed for MSUB’s women’s basketball team from 200206, her career being highlighted by a 21-7 record that culminated in an NCAA West Region Championships playoff berth in 2002-03. A Billings native, Petersen helped the Yellowjackets go 9-3 and win the Heartland Conference, where she was an eventual first-team allleague selection. Among MSUB’s all-time greats, Petersen ranks third in career blocked shots (117), ninth in career field-goal percentage (.481) and rebounds (649), and No. 12 in career points with 1,264. Petersen also recorded the seventh-most blocked shots in a single season at MSUB, with 50 in 2005-06.
Petersen is in the top-10 in blocked shots and rebounds after a stellar four-year career for the ‘Jackets.
Petersen played under head coach Karyn Ridgeway for her first two seasons, and under current Yellowjacket head coach Kevin Woodin for her final two years.
“This is such an incredible honor and privilege to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, and is an accomplishment I will cherish forever,” said Petersen. “There is no way I would have received this honor without the amazing teammates and coaches I had over my career, and for that I will forever be grateful.” The 2017 MSUB Hall of Fame and Distinction induction class will bring the total number of inductees to 155, and the ceremony was first held in 1990.
