About Yellowjacket Athletics Home of the Yellowjackets, the Montana State University Billings department of intercollegiate athletics supports 15 men’s and women’s varsity sports which compete in the NCAA at the Division II level. MSUB is one of 11 full-time members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, which features 11 championships throughout each academic year. More than 240 student-athletes compete on MSUB’s teams, and members of Yellowjacket teams posted a collective 3.15 grade point average during the 2014-15 academic year. MSUB-sponsored varsity sports include men’s and women’s teams in basketball, cheer/stunt, cross-country, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track & field, as well as baseball, softball, and women’s volleyball. 2014-15 marked a historic year for Yellowjacket Athletics, as MSUB hosted three conference championship events and an NCAA Division II West Region Championship for the first time ever. The ‘Jackets welcomed more than 30 teams to Billings on Nov. 22, 2014 for the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Amend Park, hosted the 2014-15 Men’s and Women’s GNAC Basketball Championships from March 4-7, 2015 at Alterowitz Gym, and capped off the year by hosting the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships from May 7-8 at Dehler Park. MSUB also serves as the host of the largest NCAA Division II softball tournament, the Desert Stinger Classic, which was played for the sixth year in a row from Feb. 12-14, 2015 at Majestic Park in Las Vegas. The 2014-15 year also featured three All-American athletes from MSUB, including senior Kayleen Goggins (women’s basketball), junior Robert Peterson (men’s indoor track & field), and senior Brody Miller (baseball). Miller was also selected as the 2014-15 GNAC Male Athlete of the Year for all sports, just the second baseball player in the conference’s history to win the award, and the second student-athlete from MSUB to collect the honor as he joined women’s basketball star Bobbi Knudsen (2013-14). Capturing GNAC crowns during the 2014-15 year were MSUB’s baseball and softball teams. The Yellowjackets won the 2015 GNAC Softball Championships and advanced all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II West Region Championships in May.

About Yellowjacket Athletics MSUB’s women’s soccer team also competed for a GNAC Championship title, finishing in second place in the conference standings and earning the No. 2 seed into the conference tournament in the fall of 2014. In men’s golf, senior Jake Hedge also represented the ‘Jackets at the NCAA Regional level, competing as an individual in the championships in Monterey Bay, Calif., from May 6-8, 2015. In 2013-14, the MSUB women’s basketball team made history by winning the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season title and advancing to the NCAA Division II west regional championship game. MSUB’s 2013-14 women’s basketball team joined the Yellowjackets’ 1998-99 squad as the only two in program history to advance to the NCAA regional title game. The latter continued on to the Elite Eight, marking the furthest-advancing MSUB team in the school’s history. In 2012, the MSUB softball team won the GNAC regular season title with a 32-18 overall record and earned hosting privileges for the 2013 conference softball tournament. The 2012 Yellowjacket men’s basketball team also earned a conference title, defeating the University of Alaska Anchorage 74-70 in the GNAC tournament championship game. Formerly known as Eastern Montana College, MSUB athletics stem back to the 1927-28 season, the year in which the university was founded. The Yellowjackets have competed in a number of different conferences throughout the years, and prior to the 1980-81 season the athletic department transitioned from the NAIA to competing at the NCAA Division II level. The MSUB Hall of Fame and Distinction inducted its inaugural class in 1990 and serves as a tribute towards influential figures on and off the court, in both current and retired sports.

Team IMPACT
Yellowjacket men adopt 6-year-old with cancer through Team IMPACT September 24, 2014 Through Team IMPACT, a program that matches children with severe diseases with college athletic programs, the MSUB men’s soccer team has taken a 6-year-old with cancer onto the team. BILLINGS, Mont. – Making its newest and most valuable addition to the 2014 squad, the Montana State University Billings men’s soccer team partnered with Team IMPACT to welcome 6-year-old Sebastien Easton as its honorary guest for the remainder of the season. Sebastien is currently battling cancer, and was paired with the Yellowjackets when he was selected to MSUB’s roster on Draft Day Tuesday evening. “It’s just great that we can have Sebastien come out here and be part of the team,” said head coach Alex Balog. “This season he will be the 30th player on our roster, and we are very happy to have him on the team.” Sebastien made an appearance at the Yellowjackets’ practice, where he was greeted by players, took part in exercises, and was presented with an MSUB cap and a jersey signed by the entire team. “It’s great to welcome Sebastien to the team, and he’s a young fellow with a whole lot of character,” said sophomore Rhys Lambert, who presented the cap to Sebastien. “Having him here is going to be great for him and for us. For us to be able to impact someone’s life like that is incredible.” Sebastien and his family currently reside in Billings, and his mother Mandy Easton is a MSUB alumna who played volleyball for the Yellowjackets. The MSUB men’s soccer team will welcome Sebastien to a variety of events throughout the year, including training sessions, team meals, team activities and pre-game talks. “He is also touching our lives, because it helps our student-athletes put things into perspective,” Balog said. “When these guys see this 6-year-old show up, full of enthusiasm and happy that he can be here, it teaches our players that’s how they need to show up to the soccer field day-in and day-out.” Team IMPACT is a non-profit organization from Massachusetts whose mission is to pair children with severe diseases with college athletic teams. Through this partnership, the children gain strength and a sense of camaraderie, and are exposed to many of the valuable experiences that student-athletes regularly have.

Yellowjacket Athletic Director Krista Montague Krista (Fjelstad) Montague is entering her 13th year of employment at MSU Billings and her third as director of intercollegiate athletics. In 2014-15, MSUB hosted several marquee championship events for the first time ever. In November, MSUB welcomed the 2014 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Region Championships to Billings, which included participation from 32 teams across the region. MSUB also hosted the 2014-15 GNAC Basketball Championships and the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships during the academic year. MSUB’s softball team advanced to the NCAA Division II West Region Championship game after winning the GNAC Championships title, and the Yellowjackets’ baseball team also claimed a conference title during 2014-15. During her first year at the helm of the athletic department, Montague successfully secured hosting responsibilities for the upcoming 2014 NCAA cross country west regional championships and 2014-15 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships. Montague began her employment with MSUB in July of 2002 as the department’s development and marketing director. Shortly after being hired, she was appointed to the position of senior woman administrator, making her the highest-ranking female administrator in the athletic department. When Montana State University Billings announced the hiring of Montague as its new athletic director on May 10, 2013, it became the first NCAA institution in Montana to have a female athletic director. In 2005, the titles of assistant AD and NCAA compliance coordinator were added to her duties, while she still managed the corporate partnership program and special events for the department. In 2009, Montague was promoted to associate AD. As associate AD, her primary responsibilities included overseeing and managing NCAA II compliance for each of the 17 sports and co-ed cheer, as well serving as a crucial member of the athletics administration team and academic liaison between the different campus constituencies and athletics. Montague, a native of Eastern Montana, received her undergraduate degree in business administration with an option in marketing in 1999 from MSU Billings. Montague was a four-year letterwinner for the MSUB women’s basketball team and left the program with the school record for career free-throw percentage. As a senior, Montague helped MSU Billings to the West Region Championship and the program's first and only Elite Eight appearance in women’s basketball. Montague is a member of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) and NACWAA (National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators), as well as various other state and local organizations. In 2011-12, she served on NACWAA’s Legislation & Governance Committee, and also served as a member of the NCAA II Softball West Regional Advisory Committee in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Before joining the MSU Billings athletic staff full time, Montague was the athletic department’s part-time corporate partnership director and held various positions for DD Marketing (Pueblo, Colo.), Norwest Bank, and Billings Clinic. Montague is currently pursuing a master's degree in public relations at MSU Billings. She lives in West Billings with her husband Brent and two daughters Shayla (14) and Allie (12). 8 | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBMSoc | 2015 Media Guide

Feature Story: Senior Sam Butterworth
Butterworth supports the ‘Jackets, and that’s the way he likes it October 9, 2014 Maturing into one of MSUB’s most vocal and valuable leaders, junior Sam Butterworth wears his pride for Yellowjacket soccer and athletics on his sleeve. MSUB SPORTS – When the gates at Yellowjacket Field are locked tight and the turf is empty, the Montana State University Billings men’s soccer team is far from disbanded and quiet. While the team’s pride for its school shows more than ever in the midst of Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer matches, the dedication and commitment the players display towards MSUB off the field is at a similarly-high level. Their presence can be felt when the MSUB women’s soccer team takes the pitch at the City College campus, as well as back on the main MSUB campus inside Alterowitz Gym at home Yellowjacket volleyball games. The MSUB men have even been known to break into chorus inside the main cafeteria, serenading unsuspecting diners with positive cheers signifying their passion for the navy and gold. Not only is the group vocal – their antics perhaps best described as organized chaos – the men’s soccer ‘Jackets never lack for creativity while displaying their school pride.

Feature Story: Senior Sam Butterworth Leading the charge every time, whether MSUB is taking the field or taking charge of the Hive student section in Alterowitz, is Sam Butterworth, the most vocal and passionate figure of them all. Considering he grew up within the culture of European soccer, cheering on his beloved Manchester United for as long as he can remember, the fact that Butterworth’s passion is transferrable to his college team is no surprise. “When I grew up I first started playing football when I was three, so that’s when I really watched them and got into it,” Butterworth said regarding former Manchester United heroes David Beckham and Eric Cantona. “I have been to Champions League games, and I’ve always worn predators because of Beckham.” As it is referred to in Butterworth’s native town of Maidstone in Kent, England, football is very much a generational game that springs deep roots within his family. “My great grandfather Ken taught me how to kick a ball, and my dad and his friend started a team that I played on when I was younger,” Butterworth said regarding his father David Butterworth. Splitting his time between dawning Manchester United red and honing his own game on the pitch, Butterworth progressed as a strong technical player to the point where soccer at the next level began to present itself as a realistic opportunity. Partnering with a scouting company in England, Butterworth worked his way through a multifaceted player development process designed to pick out the best talent from the equivalent of the British prep ranks. “We went for an interview at Stamford Bridge, which is Chelsea’s stadium, played three games that were videotaped, and then went to a showcase which picked out the top players,” Butterworth remembered about the recruiting process. “That’s where the US coaches see you, and that’s when I first spoke to the head coach here at the time, Dan McNally.” McNally, also a native of England, liked what he saw in Butterworth and the decision was made to bring him into the Yellowjacket family. “My first time (in the United States) was my freshman year in 2012,” Butterworth remembered. “I have always been to smaller schools where football has been the main focus. Scholarship wise it was a great fit and it was also a completely different culture.” Having never even visited America before, Butterworth was unsure what to expect as he prepared to begin his college experience. It was not long before he began to draw parallels between Billings and his home town, citing the similarity in size as one of the main factors making the transition seem more natural. On the pitch however, the differences were numerous, and Butterworth went through a shift in mindset to help him adapt to the American game. “At home, we would end at 90 minutes if it was a draw, and playing 110 minutes shocked me when I first got here,” Butterworth said regarding the NCAA rule of an overtime period if a game is tied after regulation. “I’ve had to adapt to be more fit because of weather as well. At home I live at 80 feet (above sea level) and now I am at 3,000 feet.” Not only has Butterworth made the transition, he has embraced the American game and begun to thrive within an entirely new system of soccer.

Feature Story: Senior Sam Butterworth
“Sam has undergone tremendous growth as a person in his time at MSUB, and I know that the structure of the program has helped him with that,” said current MSUB head coach Alex Balog. “He has gone through the ups and downs of the program and has experienced a losing season and a winning season. He has the ability to relay those experiences to the younger players and explain to them the importance of what we as a coaching staff try to tell them.” Among a team of a dozen international players, Butterworth is one of two players from England. Tom Saltwell, who hails from Essex in London, has adapted to the game in a similar way as he starts along the Yellowjackets’ back line next to Butterworth. “Tom’s freshman year he played left center back and I played on the left,” Butterworth said. “Coming from England, you just know straight away how to play with one another.” Despite living just 40 minutes apart, the two never crossed paths as youth soccer players growing up. Now they are roommates, further tightening their bond off the field as friends. “Friendship wise, we both relate to our home and we talk to each other about the same things,” Butterworth commented. “We have the same sense of humor and he understands me.” Now in his third season as a starter within the Yellowjacket program, Butterworth cited several role models who he looked up to as a younger player on the squad. “My freshman year I didn’t think I’d come in and be a starter, but to play next to a senior captain it was nice because he was a very good player,” Butterworth said regarding former captain and now assistant coach Conner Moe. “Thomas Chameraud, who is now an assistant coach, was another player I looked up to because he created everything on the field and took responsibility for players. He battled in every game and put his body on the line.” Having former teammates as assistants has helped Butterworth hone his game, as the philosophy of MSUB soccer has been embedded into him and reflects within the way that he plays the game. “The fact that Sam has been a starter since his freshman year is something for our current freshmen to strive for,” Balog said. “He can give them pointers to help them achieve the same type of success he has experienced.” Since starting the 2014 season with a record of 0-3-2, Butterworth and the Yellowjackets have embarked on a four-game unbeaten streak and have won three games in-a-row to bring their record to an even 3-3-3. Additionally, MSUB is 3-1-1 in conference play and currently sits in third place in the GNAC standings.

Feature Story: Senior Sam Butterworth “We started the year poorly, but I think the change from last year is that all of the boys have character and the will to win,” Butterworth said regarding the transformation in attitude. “We need a team that stays together no matter what, and that’s how we will push forward this week and the week after on the road.” With four-straight conference road games coming up, there is nothing simple or easy about the task facing the ‘Jackets. “Seattle Pacific is going to be very hard this week, but we have the confidence of everyone on the team to gel together,” Butterworth said regarding Thursday’s match against the No. 6 team in the NCAA. “That character showed when we fought back to tie Simon Fraser, and now we are pushing on, unbeaten in our last four games.” While Butterworth holds strong as a defensive anchor for MSUB, a significant part of his value lies within his ability to push forward and bolster the team’s offense. Having started seven matches this season, Butterworth leads the team with three assists out of the back. “Sam’s instincts push him forward, so we expect him to contribute offensively from both the left back and left midfield positions,” said Balog. “Above all else, I want and expect him to give one hundred percent for the program day-in and day-out, and to take up more leadership responsibilities.” Midway through his third season of American soccer, Butterworth explained that the largest transformation has not come within his style of play on the field. “My footballing hasn’t changed, and I’ve always been that person who is loud on the field,” Butterworth said. “As a student-athlete, you really have that name ‘student’ and you have a responsibility to represent MSUB in the right way. We have to show others that if we can do well in school as student-athletes, then they can do well also. We are role models and they look up to us in a way.” “Coming in, Sam was used to a completely different scholastic system back home in England,” Balog commented. “It took him a little while to adjust to the American educational system, but I feel he is on par now.” Now relied upon as a leader by example both on and off the field, Butterworth will undoubtedly continue to have an impact on team chemistry as he further strengthens the bond that is the trademark of MSUB’s program. As for his passion for MSUB athletics as a whole, his unwavering support and commitment to the university relates back to his roots. The MSUB hooligans are alive and well contributing in a positive manner towards the game environment at all Yellowjacket home events, and no one cheers louder than Butterworth. “Culture wise, coming from Europe, that’s just what you do,” Butterworth said. “You go to the professional stadiums, and hear 60 thousand cheering. We give all of the other teams support, because we are all part of MSUB at the end of the day. We are all student-athletes and we know what that takes, and it is nice to help other teams strive forward in their seasons as well.”

2015 Season Preview After doubling its win total from the previous season in 2014, the Montana State University Billings men’s soccer team is poised to continue the positive trajectory this fall. The Yellowjackets, who finished in fifth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a record of 6-9-3, completed their 2014 campaign just one game under .500 in league play at 6-7-1 in GNAC games. MSUB’s 19 points were six more than it earned in the 2013 season, and as the calendar turns to August the ‘Jackets are set for another strong push up the conference table. “We feel good about the direction the program has taken since the spring of 2013,” commented third-year head coach Alex Balog. “Both on and off the field we have taken great strides towards improving the caliber of student-athletes we are bringing in, our team grade point average, and the number of wins. All three influence one another, and I believe that this upcoming season will show that we are on the right track.” A duo of four-year seniors will anchor the Yellowjackets defensively, as Cameron Lee and Sam Butterworth will suit up for their final collegiate campaigns along the back line for MSUB. Butterworth was an honorable mention all-conference selection a season ago, and led the team with six assists while starting 16 matches. Serving as a team captain this season, Lee is coming off a strong junior year in which he started 16 games and played the second-most minutes among field players with 1,441 as a central defender. “It has been brilliant to see the transition these two young men have gone through over the past three years,” Balog commented on Lee and Butterworth. “They have both grown tremendously as men, as students, and as players. For their senior season, our coaching staff is going to rely heavily on their leadership and experience with GNAC play. Both Cameron and Sam will be pivotal in having the great season we want to have.” In addition to Lee and Butterworth, MSUB welcomes back another experienced defender in junior Tom Saltwell, and a goalkeeper who started every game in 2014 in junior Tom Lohmann. After breaking out as a freshman in 2013 and starting a dozen games, Saltwell started 15 matches and has been a strong physical presence with his 6-foot-3 frame roaming the back line for the ‘Jackets. “If we can keep Tom healthy and fit, he has the potential to be one of the most dominant center backs in the GNAC,” Balog said of the Chelmsford, England native. “With his strong understanding of the game, we will be looking at him to help anchor the defense.”
2015 Senior Cameron Lee.
New to MSUB in 2014 was Lohmann, a transfer from Berlin, Germany who started all 18 matches between the pipes and notched a goals-against average of 1.46. Lohmann also came up with 73 saves and two assists on the season, and tallied three shutouts while playing the third-most minutes in the league in conference games with 1,235. 18 | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBMSoc | 2015 Media Guide
2015 Season Preview “Tom certainly proved to be an upgrade in goal for us,” said Balog. “He is a little older and more experienced than many of our players, so he is another student-athlete that our coaching staff is going to be looking at for leadership. Tom understands his role on the team, while at the same time knowing that last season is in the books and that he’s going to have to prove himself all over.” Returning to MSUB in the midfield this season will be second-team all-GNAC pick Rhys Lambert, who immediately impacted the program with five goals and an assist in 16 matches as a sophomore in 2014. In his first year with the Yellowjackets, the Australian ranked fourth in the conference in game-winning goals with three. “Bringing Rhys to MSUB is proving to be one of best decisions this coaching staff has made over the last few seasons,” Balog said. “Rhys brings passion and love to the team. He is hard as nails and is a good passer of the ball, and those are qualities that we will definitely need in order to be successful in the middle of the park.” Seniors David Loeung and Fernando Perez and juniors Julian Toenges, Garret Robinson, and Daragh Kavanagh will also factor into MSUB’s midfield this season. Loeung displayed his goal-scoring potential as he found the net twice, and he and Toenges combined for three assists for the ‘Jackets. 2015 Junior Rhys Lambert.
Perez started nine matches while playing in 13, and Kavanagh had his number called by Coach Balog in a dozen games.
“This group of players knows what the college game is about,” Balog said regarding the experienced returners. “They each understand their role within the team very well, and know what our coaching staff expects from them. They are players who we will rely heavily on over the course of the season. All five of them are slowly coming towards the end of their collegiate careers, and I know that they will leave everything on the field.” Along with starting eight games and playing in 16, Jorge Paez added the fastest goal in MSUB history to his resume as a freshman in 2014. Coming just 10 seconds into a September match against Colorado Mesa, Paez slotted home one of his two goals on the season. Niklas Schregel will look to boost his offensive output this fall, as he joined fellow sophomore Paez on the scoring sheet with a goal and an assist in his debut college season out of Freialdenhoven, Germany in 2014. “Jorge and Niklas have a very bright future ahead of them in this program,” Balog said. “However, they cannot rest on their laurels. They both had very good freshman seasons, but will have to prove now that they are ready to step up and increase their minutes by becoming even more important to the team. We will be looking at both of them to add goals and assists to our season tally.” The ‘Jackets return three more sophomores who saw action in 2014, with Billings Senior High School graduate Strom Nuernberger starting seven matches and tallying an assist as a freshman last year. He and Eli Williams will factor into MSUB’s defensive unit this year, while fellow sophomore Kyle Davis will have an opportunity as a striker in the Yellowjackets’ lineup.

2015 Season Preview “We are very happy with the development of these three guys,” commented Balog. “I know that all three are very hungry to see the field even more than they did last season. Strom and Eli will battle between the two of them for playing time on the left side, and Kyle will be in the mix for minutes up top.” With a dozen newcomers – including eight freshmen – MSUB’s primary focus during the offseason was to bolster its attack with hopes of improving on its 2014 goal differential of minus-five (23 goals scored, 28 allowed). The Yellowjackets’ revitalized offense will start with junior transfer Thiago Novis, a Brazilian striker who scored four goals at Fresno Pacific University. Novis will be complemented by Puebla, Mexico native Ricardo Palomino, another striker who posted four goals and six assists as a freshman at fellow NCAA Division II school Northeastern State University in 2014. “We looked long and hard to find the type of player we felt would bolster our offensive department,” said Balog. “These two guys will add a nose for goals, speed, technique, and strength to our team. Both of them will compete for extensive playing time and will be key factors in our offensive scheme this season.” Providing experience and stability in MSUB’s midfield will be senior Guido Riffeser and sophomore Eli Herman. Riffeser, an Italian, will play his senior season for the ‘Jackets after transferring from Nova Southeastern University. Riffeser figures to fill an attacking role in MSUB’s midfield, after scoring four goals with the Sharks at NSU. Herman, a Bozeman, Mont., native, helped North Idaho College to a second-place finish in the Northwest Athletic Conference in 2014 and will compete for minutes this season as a sophomore with MSUB. “Guido is a highly decorated player and with his NCAA Division Two experience, he will definitely be a leader on and off the field,” Balog said. “Guido is looking to finish his collegiate career on a high note and with his technical skill set, he will add to our offensive prowess. Eli is a player we had been recruiting awhile, and he had several Division One options. As a Montana native, he knows what it is like to represent his home state, and he will do so very proudly. Eli is very passionate and is another player who will leave everything on the field.” MSUB’s 2015 freshman class is comprised of four defenders, a trio of midfielders, a goalkeeper and a striker. Graduates of Century High School in Bismarck, N.D., Jacob Richter and Anthony Morrell are both expected to figure into the conversation for the ‘Jackets as true freshmen in the midfield and on defense, respectively. Also joining MSUB after being high school teammates are defender Blake Crutchfield and midfielder Tanner Corrie, who both graduated from Snohomish High School in Snohomish, Wash. Chris Box, a freshman out of Mountain Range High School in Thornton, Colo., will provide further defensive depth. Up top, forward Christian Geronimo could see action in tandem with Novis, Palomino, and Paez. A Pittsburg High School (Calif.) graduate, Geronimo will link up with fellow Californians Adam Hepburn (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Trevor Wildberger (Rocklin, Calif.) on MSUB’s roster. Hepburn will check in as a midfielder while Wildberger and junior Joe Scott will each compete for minutes in goal next to Lohmann. “This is the biggest freshman class we have brought in since I’ve been part of the MSUB men’s soccer coaching staff,” said Balog. “We feel that these guys understand what will be asked of them, and if they fulfill their end of the bargain, they, and subsequently our program, will be successful. They all come from solid soccer backgrounds, and were dominant players where they came from. None of these guys will be content to sit on the bench, and that is exactly what we want as a coaching staff. We will be looking at all of them to compete for minutes, but how much playing time they get is ultimately up to themselves.” 20 | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBMSoc | 2015 Media Guide

2014 Season Review
2014 Season Review: ‘Jacket men double win total from a season ago November 12, 2014 Displaying marked improvement during the 2014 season, the MSUB men’s soccer team doubles its win total from a year ago and competes with top conference opponents. BILLINGS, Mont. – Doubling its total amount of wins and moving up one spot in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings this season, the Montana State University Billings men’s soccer team took a large step in the right direction during the 2014 season. After landing in sixth place in the GNAC with a record of 3-10-5 and 3-7-4 in conference play a season ago, the Yellowjackets completed their 2014 campaign with a mark of 6-9-3 including 6-7-1 in conference action. After a slow start to the season, the Yellowjackets turned heads with a loud road trip against top conference foes Simon Fraser and Western Washington. Trailing the Clan 3-1 in Burnaby, B.C., on Sept. 25, MSUB rallied behind two goals from Colin Ralston to complete a 3-3 double-overtime draw. The comeback effort sparked a three-game winning streak, as MSUB toppled Western Washington 1-0 in Bellingham, Wash., two nights later. MSUB then returned home to defeat the University of Mary 2-1 and South Dakota Mines 2-0. Overall the team was 3-5-1 at home and an even 3-3-1 on the road on the season. The ‘Jackets played five overtime matches on the season, all coming within the team’s first six games of the year. The Yellowjackets lost by more than one goal only three times, while winning a pair of their games by multiple goals.

2014 Season Review Second-year head coach Alex Balog benefitted from a diverse new cast of players, including the likes of second-team all-GNAC pick Rhys Lambert. The sophomore from Gold Coast, Australia scored five goals in his first season as a Yellowjacket and had a major impact as a midfielder starting 14 matches. Another newcomer, Colin Ralston, earned honorable mention all-conference honors after tallying six goals in his first season while starting 11 matches as a forward. Returner Thorge Jess led the team with seven goals, and added a pair of assists to push his point total to 16. The fact that all 23 of MSUB’s goals this season were scored by freshmen and sophomores is promising, in that Balog has the players to build on offensively for seasons to come. David Loeung was another sophomore newcomer who had an impact, as he played in all 18 matches and scored a pair of goals with an assist. Freshman Jorge Paez found the net twice in his first season, and scored the fastest goal in MSUB history with a finish just 10 seconds into a match against Colorado Mesa on Sept. 14. Niklas Schregel, another freshman, was MSUB’s other goal scorer this season, as he scored and had an assist in 13 starts covering more than 1,100 minutes. Defensively, the ‘Jackets relied on a solid group of returning veterans, and allowed four fewer goals as a unit than last year’s squad. Along the back, Sam Butterworth, Matt Brink, and Cameron Lee each started 16 games and logged significant mileage with at least 1,300 minutes each. Butterworth earned honorable mention plaudits from the GNAC, after leading the team with six assists this season. His ability to push forward made him a true weapon out of the back, and the three-year starter will be an invaluable returner to the squad next season. Lee, also in his third season as a starter, helped anchor the Yellowjackets’ back line in the center for more than 1,400 minutes. Sophomore Thomas Saltwell stepped up to start 15 games as a center back, filling a significant presence with his 6-foot-3 frame in the back.

2014 Season Review In his final season, senior Matt Brink logged 1,501 minutes defensively and has been a fixture for the Yellowjackets throughout his four seasons in the program. Fellow Billings native Kyle Emerick, closed his career with five assists this season and earned honorable mention all-conference selection. Emerick finished No. 6 all-time in career assists with 12 total, and his career point total of 32 ranks No. 10 in Yellowjacket history. In goal, sophomore Tom Lohmann started all 18 games and made 73 saves on the season. The German transfer totaled three shutouts on the year and held a goals-against average of 1.46. Another German player who gained traction towards the end of the season was Julian Toenges, who emerged into a starter over the final eight games. The sophomore finished with two assists on the season, as he consistently created chances for the ‘Jackets as an outside wing. As a defensive midfielder, senior Grady Bryson played in 15 matches while starting one in his final season for the ‘Jackets. Fellow senior Andres Moreano-Enriquez also contributed in the midfield, with three starts and nine overall matches played. GNAC RANKS: As a team the Yellowjackets finished fourth in the conference in shots with 223, averaging 12.39 per game…MSUB ranked No. 6 in points (69), goals (23), goals per game (1.28) and assists (23), and was fifth in goals allowed (28) and goals-against average (1.47)…MSUB finished with a GNAC-third best 77 saves on the season, and the team’s three shutouts were fifth-best in the conference…the ‘Jackets were also third in corner kicks won with 98, an average of 5.44 per game. RECORD BOOK: The Yellowjackets’ 23 assists this season were the sixth-most in program history…the team’s goals-against average of 1.47 was also the sixth-best mark in program history…Butterworth’s six assists were tied for ninth all-time in a single season…with 69 career games played Emerick finished his career tied for fourth-most all-time. COACH BALOG: Among all-time MSUB coaches Balog is now No. 4 all-time with nine career wins in two seasons…he is three wins shy of the No. 3 spot and nine wins shy of tying the No. 2 mark…Dan McNally, who held the job for eight seasons from 2005-2012, holds the all-time wins mark at MSUB with 71 total.

Yellowjacket Soccer Field
The MSU Billings soccer field, known as Yellowjacket Soccer Field, is located on the College of Technology campus and is home to both the men's and women's soccer teams. The field is located at the corner of Shiloh and Central Avenue in west Billings. The field underwent a renovation prior to the 2007 season as a new artificial turf playing surface was installed in place of the original natural grass. A new press box, scoreboard and fence were added to the complex in seasons after, with the new 600-seat bleachers being installed following the completion of the 2011 season.
