Despite a comeback effort from the Bears on Day 2 of the event, MSUB’s men’s golf team wins the Mike Grob Cup by an overall score of 10.5-7.5 after the final day of action on Friday. BILLINGS, Mont. – In a matchup that came down to the wire, the Montana State University Billings men’s golf team held off a comeback effort by Rocky Mountain College to win the Mike Grob Cup sponsored by Dominos on Friday at Peter Yegen Golf Club. The Yellowjackets used a strong performance on Day 1 to build a 6.5-2.5 lead over the Bears. Entering Friday’s play needing 5.5 points to retain the cup, RMC came up just short, but the Bears edged the ‘Jackets 5-4 on the day. Overall, MSUB won the cup with a 10.5-7.5 final score. “Our guys played great at Lake Hills, but RMC definitely had the momentum early today at Yegen,” said MSUB head coach Kevin Woodin. “The key team win for us today was Garrett’s and Connor’s hard-fought victory, which went down to the final hole. Alternate shot is a very tough format, but I thought they had great chemistry today.”
On Thursday, the ‘Jackets used team wins from the duos of Caleb Stetzner and Dylan Meccage, and Austin Walter and Scott Larson, to take 2 of 3 matchups in 4-ball play. RMC’s Colton Murphy and Bobby Anderson held off the Yellowjackets’ Connor Miele and Garrett Woodin, giving RMC a win in the third matchup. Singles play on Thursday also fell into MSUB’s favor, as Woodin, Meccage, Walter, and Larson all won their matchups. Hunter Anderson and Murphy of RMC gave the Bears some life with singles wins, but MSUB proved to have a big enough cushion to withstand Friday’s push. “Caleb played extremely well in his singles match, which was highlighted by him sinking a 35-foot, breaking putt for birdie on the 13th hole,” Woodin said. “Both Dylan and Scott played some very good golf, despite losing some close singles matches today.” RMC turned the tables on the final day of competition, as Anderson and Ho Tae Kim defeated Walter and Larson 4 and 2, and Cody Tilton and Nathan Cachia matched the score against MSUB’s Stetzner and Meccage. It was the team of Miele and Woodin that put forth a stronger effort on Friday, defeating RMC’s Bobby Anderson and Murphy 2-up. In singles play on Friday, the teams split six individual matchups. Miele took down Bobby Anderson 2-up, Walter defeated Hunter Anderson 1-up, and Stetzner won over Cory Preshinger 4 and 3. For the Bears, Murphy beat Woodin 3 and 2, while Kim and Cachia each won their matchups 2 and 1. “Austin was very clutch today,” Woodin said regarding the sophomore. “After being down one through 16 holes, he won the final two holes to pull out a victory. His 12-foot, sliding birdie on Hole 18 was huge.” The win for MSUB brings the Grob Cup back into the Yellowjackets’ possession, as the Bears had claimed it at last fall’s annual match-play event. Miele was selected as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day.
