Garrett Love and Jorey Egeland complete top-20 finishes during the 2016 conference championships hosted by Western Washington on Saturday. BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Garrett Love and Jorey Egeland paced the Yellowjacket team’s results at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s cross country championships hosted by Western Washington Saturday at Lake Padden Park. Love, a senior from Billings West High School, and Egeland, a junior from Billings Senior High School were just steps apart at the finish line. Love covered the 8K course in 25:55.40 for 16th place with Egeland crossing in 25:59.00 for 18th place. Love improved his place by two spots from last year’s championships with Egeland moving up 20 spots from his sophomore season. As a team, the Yellowjackets finished fifth in the GNAC’s 11-school field. Alaska Anchorage won the event, placing three of its top runners in the top-10, and all seven in the top-20. The Seawolves’ Edwin Kangogo won the individual title, holding a punishing average of 5:00/mile, crossing the 8K distance in 24:54.80. The Clan finished second (60 points) with host Western Washington in third (86). MSU Billings totaled 157 points behind Western Oregon’s 105.
Josh Panasuk and Tyus Mendoza crossed the finish line together for third and fourth place with Mark Hovland placing in fifth for MSUB. Panasuk was 40th in the field, finishing in 26:36.20, with Mendoza on his heels for 41st place in 26:43.30. Hovland finished 50th in 26:51.70. Competing in their first GNAC championships, freshman Ronald Venema was 53rd in 26:55.00 with sophomore Ivan Colmenero 69th in 27:38.60. GNAC Men’s Special Awards: Athlete of the Year: Edwin Kangogo, UAA Freshman of the Year: Godfrey Kemboi, NNU Newcomer of the Year: Dustin Nading, WOU UP NEXT: The Yellowjackets will turn their attention to the home-hosted 2016 NCAA Division II west region championships on Nov. 5. The event returns to Billings after MSUB hosted the 2014 meet as competitors will race on the 10K course at Amend Park.
