Jessica Bagnell recorded a double in both MSUB games on Saturday at the Desert Stinger.
After falling in both games yesterday, MSUB rebounds with a split on Day 2 of the Desert Stinger. LAS VEGAS. – A 10-run seventh inning put MSUB ahead by double-digits in a 15-2 win over the University of Mary. The ‘Jackets held the lead through most of the game against Azusa Pacific before the Cougars pushed back at the top of the seventh scoring five runs to deliver a 10-6 loss, as Montana State University Billings finished Day 2 of the Desert Stinger with a split. “In Game 1 we played really well,” MSUB head coach Jessica Rayman said. “Maddy threw a really great game and did a good job of hitting her spots. Our offense was very consistent during that game and continued to get stronger as the game went on. Game 2 was a good game and we competed all the way until the seventh. We just need to finish. It is good to see the team learning from each other and continuing to make improvements.” Game 1: MSU Billings 15, Mary 2
Ahead 5-2 after six innings, the MSUB offense exploded for double-digit runs in the top of the seventh inning. The ‘Jackets scored 10 runs on eight hits. Cameron Cassinelli walked, Myrissa Prince singled and Jessica Bagnell loaded the bases by reaching first base on an error. A walk from Amanda Barham drove in the first run of the inning. Heather Tracy plated two runs with a long single into left field. Consecutive doubles from Bella Rovens and Megan Dettling added four. Third baseman Kelsey Devlin homered to left field scoring Dettling on the play. Batting through the lineup, MSUB returned to the first batter of the inning as Cassinelli hit a RBI single to add a runner. In her second at bat of the inning, Prince tallied two runs on one swing with a home run to left. MSUB posted one more single before Mary ended the inning. MSUB recorded five doubles in the win and two home runs. In addition to her home run, Prince earned a RBI with a sac fly in the fifth inning. Every player in the MSUB lineup had a hit. Devlin finished 3-for-5. Cassinelli was 3-for-4. Prince and Rovens had three RBI’s each. In the circle, freshman Maddy Lincoln earned her first collegiate win with a complete game on five hits and two earned runs with five strike outs. GAME 2: Azusa Pacific 10, MSU Billings 6 MSU Billings (1-3) had 10 hits in the game, but the ‘Jackets recorded five errors as four of the 10 APU runs were earned in the loss to the Cougars. The ‘Jackets took the early lead scoring four runs in the first three innings. Dettling and Rovens both recorded RBI singles. In the third inning, Barham walked in a run to push MSUB ahead 4-1. Azusa Pacific (4-0) responded with four runs in the fifth and sixth inning to take the lead 5-4. MSUB pinch hitter Nicole Tiffany reached base on a single to center field at the bottom of the sixth inning. With her third home run of the tournament, Devlin earned the ‘Jackets the lead back with a long ball to left center for 6-5. Closing out the game on a strong inning, APU earned five runs on three hits and three MSUB errors at the top of the seventh inning. Azusa Pacific had 16 hits in the game led by three each from Jenna Gorman and Erinn Jaramillo. For MSUB, Rovens and Bagnell had two hits apiece with Bagnell recording a double. Senior Taylor Tokach earned the start in the circle for MSUB tossing 5 and 2/3 innings with 11 hits and two earned runs. Lincoln (1-2) finished the game in 1 and 1/3 innings with five hits and two earned runs. UP NEXT: MSUB concludes the 2017 Desert Stinger with a game against Chico State at 12:30 p.m. Mountain time.
