About Yellowjacket Athletics Home of the Yellowjackets, the Montana State University Billings department of intercollegiate athletics supports 15 men’s and women’s varsity sports which compete in the NCAA at the Division II level. MSUB is one of 11 full-time members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, which features 11 championships throughout each academic year. More than 240 student-athletes compete on MSUB’s teams, and members of Yellowjacket teams posted a collective 3.15 grade point average during the 2014-15 academic year. MSUB-sponsored varsity sports include men’s and women’s teams in basketball, cheer/stunt, cross-country, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track & field, as well as baseball, softball, and women’s volleyball. 2014-15 marked a historic year for Yellowjacket Athletics, as MSUB hosted three conference championship events and an NCAA Division II West Region Championship for the first time ever. The ‘Jackets welcomed more than 30 teams to Billings on Nov. 22, 2014 for the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Amend Park, hosted the 2014-15 Men’s and Women’s GNAC Basketball Championships from March 4-7, 2015 at Alterowitz Gym, and capped off the year by hosting the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships from May 7-8 at Dehler Park. MSUB also serves as the host of the largest NCAA Division II softball tournament, the Desert Stinger Classic, which was played for the sixth year in a row from Feb. 12-14, 2015 at Majestic Park in Las Vegas. The 2014-15 year also featured three All-American athletes from MSUB, including senior Kayleen Goggins (women’s basketball), junior Robert Peterson (men’s indoor track & field), and senior Brody Miller (baseball). Miller was also selected as the 2014-15 GNAC Male Athlete of the Year for all sports, just the second baseball player in the conference’s history to win the award, and the second student-athlete from MSUB to collect the honor as he joined women’s basketball star Bobbi Knudsen (2013-14). Capturing GNAC crowns during the 2014-15 year were MSUB’s baseball and softball teams. The Yellowjackets won the 2015 GNAC Softball Championships and advanced all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II West Region Championships in May.

About Yellowjacket Athletics MSUB’s women’s soccer team also competed for a GNAC Championship title, finishing in second place in the conference standings and earning the No. 2 seed into the conference tournament in the fall of 2014. In men’s golf, senior Jake Hedge also represented the ‘Jackets at the NCAA Regional level, competing as an individual in the championships in Monterey Bay, Calif., from May 6-8, 2015. In 2013-14, the MSUB women’s basketball team made history by winning the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season title and advancing to the NCAA Division II west regional championship game. MSUB’s 2013-14 women’s basketball team joined the Yellowjackets’ 1998-99 squad as the only two in program history to advance to the NCAA regional title game. The latter continued on to the Elite Eight, marking the furthest-advancing MSUB team in the school’s history. In 2012, the MSUB softball team won the GNAC regular season title with a 32-18 overall record and earned hosting privileges for the 2013 conference softball tournament. The 2012 Yellowjacket men’s basketball team also earned a conference title, defeating the University of Alaska Anchorage 74-70 in the GNAC tournament championship game. Formerly known as Eastern Montana College, MSUB athletics stem back to the 1927-28 season, the year in which the university was founded. The Yellowjackets have competed in a number of different conferences throughout the years, and prior to the 1980-81 season the athletic department transitioned from the NAIA to competing at the NCAA Division II level. The MSUB Hall of Fame and Distinction inducted its inaugural class in 1990 and serves as a tribute towards influential figures on and off the court, in both current and retired sports.

'Jackets win 2015 GNAC Championship; advancing to west region tournament May 2, 2015 YAKIMA, Wash. – Second baseman Aubrey Conceicao drove in four runs, including three with a double in the sixth inning, as Montana State Billings rallied from a 5-2 deficit to defeat Western Washington 9-5 and win the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Softball Championship Saturday at the Gateway Sports Complex. The Yellowjackets (29-21) will now advance to the NCAA West Regionals beginning either next Thursday or Friday. The Vikings finished their season with a record of 30-18. The eight-team regional will be divided into a pair of four-team subregionals. The NCAA will reveal the participants and two sites Monday at 7 a.m. Pacific via a news release on the NCAA official web site (ncaa.com). MSUB will be joined in the regional by the champions of the PacWest Conference and the California Collegiate Athletic Association and five at-large teams. GNAC regular-season champion Saint Martin’s, which was ranked sixth in this week’s West Regional poll, hopes to receive one of the five at-large berths. MSUB scored twice in the third inning on a single by first baseman Emily Osborn to go ahead 2-1, but the Vikings countered with four runs in their half of the inning, three on a home run by first baseman Jordan Walley. The Yellowjackets, however, then climbed back to within one run in the fifth as Conceicao got her first RBI of the game on a single, then scored on a double by designated hitter Cameron Cassinelli, who was selected the Tournament Most Valuable Player. In the sixth still trailing by one run, MSUB loaded the bases on an error, a single by left fielder Amanda Barham and a walk. Conceicao then delivered her game-winning hit. She then moved to third on a single by Osborn and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cassinelli, who finished the tournament with seven RBI. All four of Cassinelli’s hits in the tournament went for extra bases including two doubles and two home runs from its early wins against Western Washington and Saint Martin’s.

MSUB added an insurance run in the seventh. Meanwhile Jessyka MacDonald (19-6) didn't allow a run over the final four innings in throwing her third consecutive complete-game win. In 21 innings in the tournament, she allowed 17 hits and nine runs, all earned as MSUB made just two errors. That was in sharp contrast to the Yellowjackets opponents who were charged with 14 errors in the three games leading to 12 unearned runs. Western Washington was charged with six errors in the championship game and four of the runs off losing pitcher Makinlee Sellevold (25-9) were unearned. Western Washington jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning as Autumn Isaacson led off the bottom of the frame with a triple – her league leading sixth of the season – and scored on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Alicia Fine. The Yellowjackets, however, took advantage of a pair of walks and a two-out error in the third to go ahead 2-1 on Osborn's single. MSUB finished the game with nine hits, two each by Conceicao, Osborn and third baseman Kelsey Devlin. Lead-off hitter Bella Roves and cleanup hitter Brittney Sanders each walked three times – and each scored three times without getting a hit.

Hoke named co-Player of the Year, 6 ‘Jackets on all-conference list April 27, 2015 PORTLAND, Ore. – MSUB’s Taylor Hoke was named Softball Co-Player of the Year the Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced Monday. A shortstop for the Yellowjackets from Chehalis Wash., Hoke is holding down a .390 batting average her senior season. Last week Hoke crushed her 10th home run of the year. The senior leads MSU Billings in hits with 57 and RBIs with 46. She also has 99 total bases and has scored 38 runs for her team. Hoke is second in the conference in slugging percentage at .678. She has struck eight doubles this year and two triples. She is second on the team in plate appearances with 165 and is tied for the most starts by a Yellowjacket with 45. She has been instrumental for the Yellowjackets this year both in the batter’s box and on the field. “I am very proud of Taylor for her accomplishments,” MSUB head coach Lisa Allen said. “She has worked extremely hard this year. She is one of the athletes that comes in multiple times a week to take extra swings or extra grounders, this is a very well deserved honor for her. “I also think it is an impressive accomplishment for her because of what we asked her to do for the team,” Allen continued. “Her junior year we asked her to move from third base to shortstop and to her credit she really stepped up and made that her position. Taylor wanted to make this year, her senior season, really special and I think through her hard work and dedication she has achieved that.” Hoke has previously been recognized by the conference as an all-GNAC honorable mention pick both her freshman and junior seasons. Joining Hoke with first team all-conference honors is senior pitcher Jessyka MacDonald. The Billings native is one of three GNAC pitchers awarded first team honors. MacDonald carries a 2.77 ERA in the circle this season. She has the third most wins in the GNAC this year with 16. In 139 innings pitched, MacDonald has thrown 118 strikeouts this year, second in the conference. The right-handed pitcher has made 34 appearances this season tossing 14 complete games. On Friday, MacDonald tied the GNAC 2015 single-game high of 12 strikeouts in the 4-1 win over Western Oregon. MacDonald was named to the GNAC second team as a pitcher her freshman year.

"Jessyka has stepped up in a really big way for the team for year," Allen said. "In the pitching circle we have her sometimes pitching three games in a series which can be really hard on a pitcher, but she has stepped up and battled hard when her team needed her the most." Three players from MSU Billings were awarded second-team all-conference honors. Seniors Brittney Sanders made the team as a catcher and Emily Osborn as a first baseman, and sophomore Bella Rovens as an outfielder. Sanders is batting .331 on the season with 48 hits and 26 RBIs. The vocal leader on the field for the Yellowjackets, the catcher from Kelso, Wash., is second on the team with eight doubles this year and has made 642 putouts this season. Sanders is also tied with Hoke for the most at bats this season for the 'Jackets with 146. Sanders was a first-team all-conference honoree her sophomore and junior seasons for the Yellowjackets. "Brittney has been really solid behind the plate for us this year," Allen said "She has done an excellent job calling the games and has really been a vocal leader of the team all year. The pitchers really trust her and I know she is focused on the field and in the batter's box on doing the best job for the team she can each and every game." Osborn, a four-year starter at first base for MSUB has had a standout year for the 'Jackets. The native of Las Vegas is batting .377 and leads the conference in home runs with 12 and slugging percentage at .703. She has 52 hits and 35 RBIs this season. Osborn has accumulated 97 total bases with nine doubles and scored 34 runs for her team. Osborn has been named a GNAC Player of the Week this year. She was a second-team all-conference honoree her freshman season and earned honorable mention honors her junior season. "Emily has been really clutch this year coming up with some really big hits when we needed them," Allen said. "This year she has been more consistent at the plate. She's always been a good hitter, but this year she is focused on getting on base, whether that is a line drive or something hard into right field. At first base her skills have continued to be stellar." Rovens is the reigning GNAC co-Player of the Week in the conference. The sophomore centerfielder from Sparks, Nev., picked up her second nod of the season batting 6-for-7 (.857) including two doubles and adding in an RBI and a run scored. Rovens is batting .393 for MSUB, the highest on the team right now. She has 55 hits this year with six doubles. Rovens has drawn 22 walks this season and leads the conference in on-base percentage at .488. Rovens also has 12 stolen bases and scored 44 runs for the team. She has made some spectacular catches in the outfield this season for the Yellowjackets and has been the leadoff batter in the lineup all year long for MSUB. "Bella has really grown up this year; she has truly turned into a leadoff batter," Allen said regarding her sophomore. "She knows her job her job is to see as many pitches as possible in the leadoff spot. She has also become more successful at being a left-handed slapper using all the tools she needs to be effective in her role. She has also continued to grow into her role in the outfield as a leader." Senior Aubrey Conceicao was named second-team all-conference as a second baseman. A native of Temecula, Calif., the infielder is batting .374 on the season with 51 hits and 36 RBIs. At second base Conceicao has just four errors this season in 137 chances carrying a .971 fielding percentage. Conceicao has five sacrifice hits this year tying her for first in the GNAC and 10th in the nation. Her junior year Conceicao also earned second-team all-conference honors. "Aubrey continues to be a consistent hitter at the plate for us," Allen said. "She has done a good job for us battling the pitchers and really done a good job with sacrifices, especially sacrifice flies and getting the run in from third. Aubrey is a great person to have either in the box or on the field because you know she is capable of making the big plays." This week MSU Billings (26-21) travels to Yakima, Wash., for the GNAC conference tournament. The Yellowjackets are seeded third in the tournament and will face the second seed Western Washington on Thursday, Apr. 30 at 4:30 p.m.

Yellowjacket Athletic Director Krista Montague Krista (Fjelstad) Montague is entering her 13th year of employment at MSU Billings and her third as director of intercollegiate athletics. In 2014-15, MSUB hosted several marquee championship events for the first time ever. In November, MSUB welcomed the 2014 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Region Championships to Billings, which included participation from 32 teams across the region. MSUB also hosted the 2014-15 GNAC Basketball Championships and the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships during the academic year. MSUB’s softball team advanced to the NCAA Division II West Region Championship game after winning the GNAC Championships title, and the Yellowjackets’ baseball team also claimed a conference title during 2014-15. During her first year at the helm of the athletic department, Montague successfully secured hosting responsibilities for the upcoming 2014 NCAA cross country west regional championships and 2014-15 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships. Montague began her employment with MSUB in July of 2002 as the department’s development and marketing director. Shortly after being hired, she was appointed to the position of senior woman administrator, making her the highest-ranking female administrator in the athletic department. When Montana State University Billings announced the hiring of Montague as its new athletic director on May 10, 2013, it became the first NCAA institution in Montana to have a female athletic director. In 2005, the titles of assistant AD and NCAA compliance coordinator were added to her duties, while she still managed the corporate partnership program and special events for the department. In 2009, Montague was promoted to associate AD. As associate AD, her primary responsibilities included overseeing and managing NCAA II compliance for each of the 17 sports and co-ed cheer, as well serving as a crucial member of the athletics administration team and academic liaison between the different campus constituencies and athletics. Montague, a native of Eastern Montana, received her undergraduate degree in business administration with an option in marketing in 1999 from MSU Billings. Montague was a four-year letterwinner for the MSUB women’s basketball team and left the program with the school record for career free-throw percentage. As a senior, Montague helped MSU Billings to the West Region Championship and the program's first and only Elite Eight appearance in women’s basketball. Montague is a member of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) and NACWAA (National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators), as well as various other state and local organizations. In 2011-12, she served on NACWAA’s Legislation & Governance Committee, and also served as a member of the NCAA II Softball West Regional Advisory Committee in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Before joining the MSU Billings athletic staff full time, Montague was the athletic department’s part-time corporate partnership director and held various positions for DD Marketing (Pueblo, Colo.), Norwest Bank, and Billings Clinic. Montague is currently pursuing a master's degree in public relations at MSU Billings. She lives in West Billings with her husband Brent and two daughters Shayla (14) and Allie (12).

Gasner was also an assistant coach during MSUB's regional appearance in 2012, and was a pitcher on the team in 2009 which broke the school record for wins (39) and advanced to the regionals. After finishing her career at MSUB among the top-five in career earned run average, strikeouts, innings pitched, and shutouts, Gasner played professionally for the Amsterdam Pirates in the Netherlands. She also spent time as an assistant coach at Billings Senior High School, before assuming her most recent position as MSUB assistant coach. Yellowjacket Softball Interim Assistant Coach Katie Mitchell Katie Mitchell, a graduate of Colorado Mesa University (formerly Mesa State) and a Billings West High School standout has been named MSUB interim softball assistant coach for the 2015-16 season. "Katie is going to be a great addition to our coaching staff this year," Gasner said. "She is a strong, defensive-minded coach who will be working primarily with the infielders and hitters. Katie has a passion for MSUB athletics and our softball program, as well as a true sense of Division II athletics." Mitchell, a Billings West High School product was a member of the girl's basketball program that won three state championships under head coach Kevin Woodin who is currently at the helm of the women's program at MSUB. At Colorado Mesa, Mitchell was a member of the 2008-09 team that finished 16th in the country, competing at the NCAA Division II super regional tournament. She was also the starting shortstop that made a return trip to the NCAA tournament in 2009-10. In the classroom, Mitchell earned accolades as a 2-time academic all-conference honoree. After earning a degree in exercise science and graduating with honors, Mitchell continued on to the coaching realm, being named the assistant coach at Colorado Northwest Community College in Rangely, Colo., in 2011. At CNCC she was responsible for practice planning and game preparation with a focus on defense, including infield and outfield fundamentals. During her time with the Spartans, she helped develop and administer a conditioning and weights program. She was also responsible for scouting and game preparation on opponents, including pitching and hitting approaches. Mitchell brings with her to the position at MSUB an immense knowledge of the game of softball and familiarity with the Yellowjacket program. For the past three years, she has been a member of the MSU Billings athletics department serving as a statistician, including being a part of the staff that travels to the MSUB-hosted Desert Stinger tournament located in Las Vegas, Nev. The move to the coaching staff will broaden Mitchell's involvement in the department while utilizing her player and coaching abilities.

At MSUB, Timoteo will play an extensive role in working with the three new catchers on the team, making sure they are comfortable behind the plate and ready to take command of the defense. "We are excited for the opportunity to bring on a new graduate assistant this year," Gasner said. "Maddison is joining us from Drexel University and will be working primarily with our catchers and assisting with the pitching staff. Having three coaches on staff will be beneficial as we move forward into the 2016 season."

2016 Season Preview
The 2016 MSU Billings softball team is looking to build off an impressive season from last year that included a conference title and deep run into the NCAA tournament. BILLINGS, Mont. – Looking to build off an impressive finish from the last season, the 2016 Montana State University Billings softball team may look a little different, but with several key returners and a team that understands what it takes to make it deep into the postseason, this year’s Yellowjackets are up for the challenge. “When I sat down with the team in the fall, I talked with all the returners about keeping the momentum from last season,” interim head coach Rebekah Gasner said. “We still have a lot of returners that know what it is like to play in a championship. I made a point of saying last year we were just four games away from making the national tournament. That is an exciting perspective, so my goal this season has been: how are we going to win four more games?” With seven graduated seniors from last season, including GNAC co-Player of the Year Taylor Hoke and first team all-GNAC pitcher Jessyka MacDonald, several key roles will need to be filled. “We will be relying a lot on our returners for what it takes to return to the GNAC tournament,” Gasner continued. “With their experience, they know every practice and game counts. With the academic schedule starting later this season, we were able to take advantage and work outside of practice. Also, the returners know to be efficient in practice in order to continue that momentum. They understand what it means to work for four more games.” One of those key returners is junior center fielder Bella Rovens. The second-team all-GNAC pick finished fifth in the conference with a .392 batting average. From the lead-off spot for MSUB last year, Rovens finished third in the conference in runs scored (51), seventh in hits (65), fourth in stolen bases (13), second in walks, and was just off the mark for the top spot in on-base percentage at .487. “We are very fortunate to have Bella as a returner,” Gasner said. “She has been with us for the last three years so she knows our program. She has had a well-rounded experience with the highs and lows and knows what it takes to stay on the high side. She is a good asset as a leadoff and a good leader both on and off the field. The team is always confident in her as a slap hitter. This season she is working on her full swing and short game as an addition to her arsenal.” In leadership, the MSUB team has transitioned to a new head coach in Gasner, and from seven four-year seniors to three seniors, two of which are four-year Yellowjackets.

2016 Season Preview “We have been learning a lot as a team this season,” Gasner commented. “Even though I have been a part of this program for the last five years, it’s very different to step into the head role, but I feel strong with our coaching staff. Maddie (Timoteo) has been a good addition for our four catchers this year as opposed to two. Katie (Mitchell) in the infield is great because she demands a lot of them, which is good as they are all new and need to be able to work together. As far as leadership from the team, we lost a key group of starting seniors, but we do have our group of returning outfielders. Our three seniors have had to grow quite a bit, but they are all growing into their individual leadership roles on the team.” In the outfield with Rovens is senior Cori Gammon. Appearing in 36 games for the Yellowjackets, Gammon batted .231, connecting for 25 hits and led the team in sacrifice bunts with 10. Gammon had a good NCAA postseason performance for MSUB finishing with six hits including three doubles. “Cori is an excellent lead-by-example teammate,” Gasner said. “Off the field she doesn’t say much, but she is learning to communicate to the team when they need it. On the field, one of Cori’s best characteristics is her accurate throw from left field. I also think she is just hungry, she knows she is a senior, and wants to be a consistent player for the team at the plate this year.” Also returning to the outfield are sophomores Amanda Barham and Heather Tracy. Barham played in 28 games making 51 catches and with just two errors finished the year with a .961 fielding percentage. She batted .301 with 25 hits. Tracy started 50 games for MSUB last season, finishing her freshman campaign with a .318 batting average, recording 49 hits and 22 RBIs. “This fall I put Amanda in our 3-spot to bat,” Gasner said. “Her ability to make contact and hit it hard in the gap is a key strength of hers. Heather stepped in and played a huge role for us last year. She earned a lot of respect from her team and hopefully she is respected in the GNAC as a ninth hitter that gets on base. The team looks up to her, she is smart in the box and light on her feet. Our outfield looks really solid with four strong returners.” Also, returning to the outfield is sophomore Alyssa Yaeger. “Alyssa switched from a right-handed hitter to a left-handed slapper in the middle of last season,” Gasner said. “She has an excellent short game and is learning more and more each practice. She has never hit left-handed before, but she is so fast and asks really good questions.” Junior Kelsey Devlin is the lone starter returning to the infield. Last season, the third baseman batted .356 with a .550 slugging percentage. At eighth in the lineup for the ‘Jackets, Devlin hit seven home runs for MSUB, sixth-best in the conference. She had 53 hits and was fourth in the team in RBIs with 34. Devlin also had eight doubles and five stolen bases. Against nationally-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay at the NCAA tournament, Devlin was part of a seven-run comeback to advance the Yellowjackets to the next round. She was 2-for-4 in the game, including a 3-run home run in the seventh inning as the ‘Jackets won 7-6 over the Otters.

2016 Season Preview “As our only returning infielder at practice she has been a leader to help out the rest of the infield,” Gasner commented. “Her bat will also be a crucial part of our season. It can be a game-changer when she gets up to the plate.” Returning as middle infielders to the program are Myrissa Prince, Jordyn Roark, and Katlyn Stringari. Largely from the DH spot in 21 at bats for MSUB, Roark finished with a .429 batting average, including nine hits. Prince made 10 appearances, and Stringari three, but all three are expected to play a much larger role in the infield this season. “These players had great role models in Taylor Hoke and Aubrey Conceicao,” Gasner said. “Myrissa has been very open-minded and learned a lot from Taylor. She is becoming a leader and more confident, and she has a lot of power to add to our lineup. Jordyn played a crucial role for us last year as a pinch hitter. She is very patient in the box, a consistent power hitter, and defensively has been working really hard on her range and being a communicator in the field. Kate is one of the hardest working members of our team, and is also a very positive person to have on our team.” Catcher Haley Rowe is the second senior on the Yellowjacket team. Last season, Rowe was a transfer from Williston State College. For MSUB, she was in just seven games, but this season looks to be an impact player on the field for her team. “I am really looking forward to Haley stepping into the role of starting catcher,” Gasner said. “She is stepping into a much bigger leadership position and wants to lead the team and be a vocal catcher behind the plate.” The Yellowjacket pitching staff this season includes the third senior on the team Amanda Roark. She is joined by sophomore Megan Dettling, and junior transfer Taylor Tokach. Cameron Cassinelli will also be an addition to this year’s staff. “I am really excited for Amanda,” Gasner said. “She is a senior this year and worked really hard this fall to become the consistent pitcher we need her to be. I am confident in our pitching staff this year. We have always had five pitchers and this year with less, each one of them will have to step up and get the job done. “Megan has come back extremely focused,” Gasner continued. “She has been very committed, and is ready to play a big role on the team. Since the fall, Taylor has mechanically grown the most of our pitching staff. She is making huge improvements and is a versatile pitcher, which I look to keep batters guessing at the plate. Cam has turned out to be a very good counter-balance to our pitchers that throw hard. She will play a big role for us at first base and as a power hitter in the lineup.” Cassinelli was named the GNAC Tournament MVP after all four of her hits in the tournament went for extra bases, including two doubles and two home runs in wins against Western Washington and Saint Martin's. This year, the ‘Jackets added three transfers to their roster. Katie Jackson and Nicole Tiffany were teammates at Bellevue College while Ryland Estrada joins MSUB from Chandler Gilbert Community College. Jackson is a catcher, Tiffany plays second base, and Estrada is projected to play third base. “Ryland has been a pleasant surprise,” Gasner commented. “She has a very fast first step which sold us at having her stay at third, because there is a lot of short game in the GNAC. Katie is very engaged in running the defense and has developed a good relationship with the pitchers. Nikki also came to us from the outfield, but has found a home at second base. She picks things up quickly and is a solid contact hitter at the plate.”

2016 Season Preview MSUB has five freshmen on this year’s team. Jessica Bagnell redshirted last season, and is working her way back to the shortstop position. New this season are Erin Watterud (2B, Billings, MT), Justyce Connole (OF, Butte, MT), Vanessa Almario (OF, Salinas, CA), Madison Kelly (C, Phoenix, AZ). A sixth member, Jensen Johnson (2B, Billings, MT), is redshirting this season. “We have a very large freshman class this year,” Gasner observed. “All of them have a really good attitude, are willing to learn, and are adapting pretty well to being a college athlete. Vanessa has a strong arm and is adapting her hitting style. Justyce is working on developing her power. Both of them are strong center fielders and I look forward to their contributions. Jackie is hitting really well, and Erin and Jensen are both eager to learn and develop their skills. “Jessica has battled a lot of adversity,” Gasner continued. “She has worked very hard and hopefully can stay healthy. She had a good mentor in Taylor (Hoke), is a good glove at shortstop, and is a smart player.” The Yellowjackets open their 2016 season by hosting the seventh annual Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas on Friday, Feb. 5, against Sonoma State. The team will play five games in three days in Nevada and then head to Dixie State for several individual games against the Red Storm before participating in a tournament that weekend. MSUB begins its Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule on March 5, at Simon Fraser. The first home game for the ‘Jackets is March 19, when MSUB welcomes Saint Martin’s to Avitus Group Stadium. All of the Yellowjackets' home games will feature live video and live statistics through MSUB's Stretch Internet portal here. “I am really excited for our schedule this season,” Gasner said. “We have a lot of really good competition this year that we need to take advantage of. We will take it one game at a time, but there are a lot of great opportunities. Our opening two weeks we play 13 games in 10 days with just two days off, but I know the team is ready to start. “All of the games leading up to GNAC competition will tell us what we need to work on,” Gasner said. “I think the GNAC will be really balanced this year, and I am looking forward to seeing what our team can do.” Joining the GNAC this year is Concordia (Ore.). MSU Billings will play 28 conference games against seven teams with the top-four teams advancing to the conference tournament April 28-30, in Lacey, Wash., hosted by Saint Martin’s

Around the Horn: MSUB Softball senior feature story series – Aubrey Conceicao, 2B April 29, 2015 | By: Evan O’Kelly, MSUB Sports Information Director MSUB SPORTS – Meet halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego and you’ll find yourself in the Southern California town of Temecula. Located roughly 90 minutes north of the border to Mexico, its winding dirt roads extend far into the distance and fresh grapes are in abundance in what is referred to often as wine country. More than a decade ago, twin brothers Brett and Bryant Conceicao were growing up in their parents’ tract home, experimenting with whatever sports they could and playing in the dirt every opportunity they got. Following close behind was their little sister Aubrey Conceicao, who only ever wanted to do what her brothers did and have fun alongside them. Soccer and tee ball were there for Conceicao from as early an age as she can remember, but she also got involved in horseback riding until a broken pinky prevented her from gripping a saddle properly. When her requests to her father Mike of creating a girls’ football league so that she could play too fell through, she settled for a Honda XR70 dirt bike so she could keep up with her brothers. When her brother suffered injuries in a crash, it was the end of the dirt bike line as Aubrey’s mother Linda Conceicao asserted her authority. “After that crash my mom said we weren’t allowed to ride anymore,” Conceicao said. “I just stuck with softball and soccer as my main two sports from there.” Conceicao’s days of horse showing and dirt bike riding with the boys had come to an end, but she was about to embark on a whole new career and a fresh start with softball. Since then, she has put together one of the most memorable careers in Montana State University Billings softball history, and is still composing her final chapter as she leads the Yellowjackets into the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships this weekend.

STARTING AT FIRST, MOVING TO SECOND Conceicao began playing travel softball when she was 12, electing to explore a new sport and commit to it instead of pursuing her soccer career. Her father had been her coach every step of the way and her mother had been at every practice from tee ball through travel ball. “When I got older my dad let the other coaches take over,” Conceicao said. “Then they became the team parents. They have always been so supportive. We would have tournaments every weekend and they would drive me everywhere.” As she learned the fundamentals of the game, Conceicao knew that if she wanted to differentiate herself and excel, that she would have to commit to her travel ball team and be willing to find the position that fit her best. For the first few seasons, Conceicao started in the outfield and experimented at first base. She built a strong skill set and felt herself progressing, but it was during her 14-year-old season when she remembered the first jolt of energy that ignited her passion in the game. “I had a coach named Brian Turang who came in for one season and moved me to second base,” Conceicao said. “He started teaching us some really cool things, and it sparked my interest for the game.” Turang, who played 78 games with the Seattle Mariners during the 1993-94 seasons, saw something in Conceicao that no one else had to that point. The ex-Major League Baseball infielder brought Conceicao’s potential to the surface, albeit only temporarily as she shifted back into the outfield the following season. When her senior teammate at Great Oak High School tore her ACL, the freshman Conceicao took over at first base and became a fixture over the next four seasons. By the time Conceicao reached her senior year, she had her choices for college narrowed down to schools in San Francisco, Hawaii, and Billings. “I had three schools looking at me, but when I went on a visit to MSUB I became more interested,” Conceicao said. “I was more sold on the team and the camaraderie compared with the other schools that I looked at.” During Conceicao’s recruiting visit to MSUB, she was asked to slide over and play second base. While Conceicao had grown comfortable at first base and running down balls in the outfield, she remembered the excitement she got out of the position during her brief stint there under Turang’s guidance. “It was definitely a learning curve for me my freshman year learning the ins and outs of second base,” Conceicao said. “Jenna VanEykeren was a senior who helped me a lot. I definitely tried to follow in her footsteps.” TOUGHEST TO STRIKE OUT The move to second base ended up being a natural fit for Conceicao, as she embraced her new position and had no problem handling the challenge of playing a middle infield spot.

“Aubrey was so successful because she asked so many good questions and was eager to learn,” said MSUB head coach Lisa Allen. “Jenna did a really good job of mentoring Aubrey in that position, and they worked well together. She helped Aubrey get comfortable at second and to know where she needed to be on every play.” While Conceicao played in just 10 games as a freshman behind VanEykeren, her .364 batting average (8-for-22) hinted that she was about to become a cornerstone in MSUB’s lineup over the next four seasons. Four hundred at-bats later, and Conceicao holds the third-highest career batting average in MSUB history at .367, and her 153 hits are eighth-most in Yellowjacket history. As a sophomore in 2013 not only did Conceicao hit .336 with two home runs and 26 RBIs, but she struck out just one time in 135 plate appearances. That mark led all of the NCAA Division II, as she was honored with the NCAA’s Toughest to Strike Out award. “I hadn’t realized she had only struck out once until it was brought up, and I don’t think Aubrey even knew,” Allen said. “She is still such a tough person to get out, and when she strikes out it’s a surprise. She battles so well and is good at putting the ball into play.” Entering this week’s GNAC tournament, Conceicao has struck out just 15 total times in 465 career plate appearances for the Yellowjackets, a figure that averages out to one strikeout every 31 times to bat. Conceicao’s toughness at the plate is a trait she developed as a child, as she learned how to face adversity through her family growing up. When Aubrey was in fifth grade, her mother Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer. “That was hard to go through as a kid,” Aubrey said. “Looking back it is kind of fuzzy and it was hard for me to fully understand what was going on. Even now I go with my mom to appointments for checkups and support her.” Linda is now cancer free, as the support she received from her daughter and family helped her overcome the disease. BECOMING SAAC PRESIDENT With as much as Conceicao has contributed to the MSUB softball program on the field, it’s difficult to find a player who has shown more dedication to the success of her team as a whole. That being said, it has always been within Conceicao’s nature to go the extra mile, and put forth a further effort to better herself and those around her. In her very first season with the ‘Jackets, Conceicao was selected to represent her team on MSUB’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which is an organization that serves as the liaison between student-athletes and students on campus.

Each team at MSUB has representatives on SAAC, with one student-athlete serving as president of the organization and representing the school as a whole for conference-wide and regional SAAC meetings. Conceicao was quickly interested in the creative community service projects that SAAC is tasked with developing, as she helped coordinate canned food drives at home basketball games. As a junior last year, Conceicao had the opportunity to travel to the GNAC SAAC retreat in Burnaby, British Columbia, convening with SAAC representatives from the other nine schools in the conference and brainstorming ideas for projects at their schools. This year, Conceicao has served as the president of SAAC at MSUB, a role she has taken in stride but one she admits pushed her outside of her comfort zone. “Never in a million years did I ever think I would be president of SAAC,” Conceicao said with a smile. “It has definitely pushed me out and taught me how to speak in public, and it has taught me a lot of life lessons.” Through her leadership role, Conceicao spoke this year at the MSUB Scholarship Dinner Auction in the fall and also at the Yellowjacket Hall of Fame and Distinction induction ceremony in February. Her considerate words provided audiences with a first-hand perspective of the importance of being a student-athlete, and her dedication to her position as president has made her a role model for teammates and fellow student-athletes alike to aspire to follow. “Aubrey has shown that you can be a good student, a leader on the field, a SAAC president, and be involved in many community events all while keeping a good GPA,” Allen commented. “Without SAAC and everything she is involved with, she might not be the confident, humble, and resilient person that she is today.” Maintaining a 3.40 grade point average while studying psychiatric rehabilitation, Conceicao was recently inducted into MSUB’s Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society, which recognizes students who participate in a varsity sport and maintain a 3.40 cumulative GPA. She was also picked as an academic all-GNAC honoree for the third year in a row this season. “The leadership shown by Aubrey through SAAC over the past four years is a true testament to what being a Yellowjacket is all about,” commented MSUB athletic director and SAAC adviser Krista Montague. “It has been a pleasure watching Aubrey excel on the field, within the classroom, and among her peers as a leader of SAAC. We want to sincerely thank her for her dedication to the overall student-athlete experience, and we will miss her leadership among the entire university. She is a true role model and no doubt has made a positive impact on those around her.”

AROUND THE HORN “She’s the quiet storm. She’s always there, and you never hear her, but she’s always just doing what she needs to do.” – MSUB head coach Lisa Allen on senior second baseman Aubrey Conceicao As Conceicao prepares to lead the Yellowjackets into the GNAC Championships, she has all of the tools possessed by a humble and respected leader. She commands the respect of her teammates by setting a prime example, whether it be snagging ground balls or doing her part academically as she pursues her degree. As a wide-eyed freshman in 2012, Conceicao looked on as the Yellowjackets stormed to the GNAC regular-season title and advanced to the NCAA West Region Championships. “When we were freshmen, we had a big group of seniors who had a big impact on us,” Conceicao remembered. “We are hoping to have the same impact on our underclassmen.” Now back in the postseason, it is Conceicao’s turn along with her fellow seniors to put on display what they have learned growing together over the past four seasons. Beside her is Jessica Campbell, the Montana native who Conceicao met on her recruiting visit and spent her freshman year rooming with, and fellow pitcher Mary Grace Bywater who she has lived with the last two years. In the circle is first-team all-GNAC pitcher Jessyka MacDonald, who has comfortably pitched to contact knowing Conceicao’s capabilities of handling anything hit in her direction. To her left is Emily Osborn, the first baseman who has caught more throws from Conceicao than any other through her four years. Behind the plate is catcher Brittney Sanders, whose voice Conceicao could recognize anywhere after countless times hearing it bark out defensive instructions and situations. Up the middle is Taylor Hoke, the sure-handed shortstop who has grown into the GNAC Player of the Year, and who Conceicao has turned countless double plays with. And in the dugout, looking on just as Conceicao did as a freshman, is second baseman Myrissa Prince. Whether she knows it or not, there is a lot of Aubrey Conceicao in her, and she represents the next generation of Yellowjacket elite who this year’s one-of-a-kind class will pass the torch on to next.

Avitus Group Stadium
Newly named Avitus Group Stadium following the 2014 season, the Yellowjackets’ softball field sits on the main campus of MSU Billings and has been the home of the Yellowjacket softball team since 2002. The field is also used for intramural softball. Bjorgum Field is situated just north of the PE Building, which houses Alterowitz Gym and the locker room facilities. The installation of bullpens is currently underway, and is expected to be completed prior to the beginning of the 2015 season. Bjorgum Field underwent a small renovation during the summer of 2010, replacing the drainage system and the entire infield. The dirt used in the renovation came from the same spot that is used for the infield dirt at Coors Field, home of MLB's Colorado Rockies.
