ABOUT YELLOWJACKET ATHLETICS Home of the Yellowjackets, the Montana State University Billings department of intercollegiate athletics supports 15 men’s and women’s varsity sports which compete in the NCAA at the Division II level. MSUB is one of 11 full-time members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, which features 11 championships throughout each academic year. More than 240 student-athletes compete on MSUB’s teams, and members of Yellowjacket teams posted a collective 3.15 grade point average during the 2015-16 academic year. MSUB-sponsored varsity sports include men’s and women’s teams in basketball, cheer/ stunt, cross-country, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track & field, as well as baseball, softball, and women’s volleyball. Highlights from the 2015-16 season included a second NCAA West Region Championships berth for MSUB’s women’s basketball team in the last three years, as the Yellowjackets played their way to the title game of the GNAC tournament before advancing. Junior Alisha Breen led the GNAC in scoring with 17.4 points per game, and senior Janiel Olson broke the school’s career rebounding record. Senior Della Lyle stole the show on the track for the ‘Jackets, becoming the first All-American in school history on the women’s side. She was selected as the GNAC Newcomer of the Year in both indoor and outdoor seasons, and represented the Yellowjackets at the NCAA National Championships. On the baseball diamond, the ‘Jackets claimed their second straight GNAC regular-season title, setting a program record with 30 victories including their first-ever postseason win in the conference tournament. Junior Cody Cooper shattered the school record with 106 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings, and senior Luke Reinschmidt closed his historic career by earning first-team all-region honors for a second straight season. MSUB’s men’s soccer team also had a highlight year, posting its first winning season since 2012. Sophomore Ricardo Palomino led the entire NCAA west region in goals with 16, and earned first-team all-region honors. In women’s soccer, the ‘Jackets advanced to their third GNAC Championship tournament in the last four seasons, after posting a second consecutive winning year. MSUB hosted three conference championship events and an NCAA Division II West Region Championship for the first time ever during the 2014-15 year. The ‘Jackets welcomed more than 30 teams to Billings on Nov. 22, 2014 for the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Amend Park, hosted the 2014-15 Men’s and Women’s GNAC Basketball Championships from March 4-7, 2015 at Alterowitz Gym, and capped off the year by hosting the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships from May 7-8 at Dehler Park. MSUB also serves as the host of the largest NCAA Division II softball tournament, the Desert Stinger Classic, which was played for the sixth year in a row from Feb. 12-14, 2015 at Majestic Park in Las Vegas.

ABOUT YELLOWJACKET ATHLETICS The 2014-15 year also featured three All-American athletes from MSUB, including senior Kayleen Goggins (women’s basketball), junior Robert Peterson (men’s indoor track & field), and senior Brody Miller (baseball). Miller was also selected as the 201415 GNAC Male Athlete of the Year for all sports, just the second baseball player in the conference’s history to win the award, and the second student-athlete from MSUB to collect the honor as he joined women’s basketball star Bobbi Knudsen (2013-14). Capturing GNAC crowns during the 2014-15 year were MSUB’s baseball and softball teams. The Yellowjackets won the 2015 GNAC Softball Championships and advanced all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II West Region Championships in May. MSUB’s women’s soccer team also competed for a GNAC Championship title, finishing in second place in the conference standings and earning the No. 2 seed into the conference tournament in the fall of 2014. In men’s golf, senior Jake Hedge also represented the ‘Jackets at the NCAA Regional level, competing as an individual in the championships in Monterey Bay, Calif., from May 6-8, 2015. In 2013-14, the MSUB women’s basketball team made history by winning the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season title and advancing to the NCAA Division II west regional championship game. MSUB’s 2013-14 women’s basketball team joined the Yellowjackets’ 1998-99 squad as the only two in program history to advance to the NCAA regional title game. The latter continued on to the Elite Eight, marking the furthest-advancing MSUB team in the school’s history. In 2012, the MSUB softball team won the GNAC regular season title with a 32-18 overall record and earned hosting privileges for the 2013 conference softball tournament. The 2012 Yellowjacket men’s basketball team also earned a conference title, defeating the University of Alaska Anchorage 74-70 in the GNAC tournament championship game. Formerly known as Eastern Montana College, MSUB athletics stem back to the 1927-28 season, the year in which the university was founded. The Yellowjackets have competed in a number of different conferences throughout the years, and prior to the 1980-81 season the athletic department transitioned from the NAIA to competing at the NCAA Division II level. The MSUB Hall of Fame and Distinction inducted its inaugural class in 1990 and serves as a tribute towards influential figures on and off the court, in both current and retired sports.

MSUB SOFTBALL INKS LOCAL RECRUIT BRIA KOCH THROUGH TEAM IMPACT

BILLINGS, Mont. – The MSUB softball program announced the signing of 10-year old Bria Koch to the Yellowjacket team the athletic department released Saturday. Bria became an honorary member of the Yellowjacket program during Draft Day when she was partnered with the Montana State University Billings softball team through the organization Team IMPACT. "Our team and the coaching staff are really excited to officially welcome Bria to our Yellowjacket softball program," MSUB head coach Rebekah Gasner said. "Today was the team's first time meeting her as a whole group. Our team advocates had introduced themselves and spent time with Bria earlier and they were able to come back with all of these wonderful things about her and so we were all very excited to meet her. "I also think it is special because it is signing week for our other Yellowjacket programs so I think that it is fitting that she is able to sign with us today," Gasner continued. "We are really looking forward to working with Bria the rest of the year and we are hoping to continue that relationship as well. It is a great opportunity for our program to experience this, and we are so excited that Bria has become a member of our team." Making her debut as a Yellowjacket, Bria was joined on signing day by MSUB director of intercollegiate athletics Krista Montague and Coach Gasner as well as Bria's parents Bonnie and Brad and all of her new teammates. "We are super excited," MSUB shortstop and Team IMPACT advocate Katlyn Stringari said. "This is the best opportunity I have ever had. Not a lot of athletes get a chance to work with someone like this. Bria is so positive about everything and I hope we can be good role models for her and people that she can look up to. As for the team, this is one of the most amazing experiences we have been a part of, whether that is spending time with her in the hospital or spending time with her outside of that. It makes us better people and a better team, and we feel very blessed."

Bria lives with a condition called Diamond-Blackfan anemia, a disorder of the bone marrow. Bria receives blood transfusions every 3-4 weeks and it was through her visits that the Koch family learned of another Team IMPACT member of MSUB athletics - Sebastien Easton. Bria is now the second member to join the MSUB athletic department as the MSU Billings men's soccer team drafted Sebastien in September 2014. The relationship between the soccer team and Sebastien has had an indelible impact on both the Easton and Yellowjacket families that has continued through the present-day. Bria will be joining the Montana State University Billings softball team for events throughout the season. During the doubleheader against Concordia (Ore.), Bria was on hand to throw out the ceremonial first-pitch. On signing day, the second grader was presented with a team jersey bearing her favorite number 12. Bria was also given a locker in the Yellowjacket softball team room and was able to warm-up before the day's games on the field. "We really think it's good for Bria to meet other girls who are in a team environment and foster those relationships," Bria's mother Bonnie Koch said. "All the women we have come in contact with through the (softball) program have just been awesome," Brad Koch Bria's dad added. "Bria has got that same spirit down in her heart." Team IMPACT is a non-profit organization from Massachusetts whose mission is to pair children with severe diseases with college athletic teams. Through this partnership, the children gain strength and a sense of camaraderie, and are exposed to many of the valuable experiences that student-athletes regularly have.

Sparks shining bright as Yellowjacket softball pipeline Tuesday, March 8, 2016 With six players on its roster from Sparks, Nev., MSUB’s softball team finds a niche of talent that figures to sustain itself for years to come. MSUB SPORTS – Take a trip down to the desert in western Nevada and you’ll find one of the unknown softball hotbeds, ridden with college-ready talent. The fifth-most populated city in the state at 90,000 inhabitants, Sparks is located roughly 15 miles from the border of California, and lies just west of Reno with the Interstate 80 highway cutting right through its center. It is here that the Montana State University Billings softball team has created a self-sustaining network of athletes who have become fixtures among the Yellowjackets’ roster. Now serving as interim head coach, Rebekah Gasner has been there since Day 1, assisting in planting the recruiting seeds in an area that has come to yield some of MSUB’s best players. “We are very fortunate to have developed such a strong recruiting base from Nevada,” Gasner said. “It just seems like the young players from that area are prepared for the commitment it takes to play competitive softball at the college level. They understand the importance of buying into the program and the goals we have in front of us.” Gasner alluded to the six players on MSUB’s roster who call Sparks their hometown, and who have brought a unique culture and diverse skillset into the Yellowjackets’ program. When now-senior Cori Gammon signed her letter of intent in 2011, she could never have realized that she was beginning a movement that would last for the duration of her collegiate career and beyond. Soon to follow her was Bella Rovens, the two growing from best friends in high school to inseparable now in their final year playing together in college. The wave continued with MSUB’s 2014 signing class, as Amanda Barham, Myrissa Prince, and Megan Dettling elected to continue their run as teammates by joining the Yellowjackets. Most recently, freshman Vanessa Almario committed to MSUB as the Sparks connection extended to its third class. www.msubsports.com | @MSUBSoftball | 2017 MSUB Softball Media Guide | 9

Rovens and Gammon are the team’s soft-spoken leaders, covering ground in center and left field, respectively, as well as any tandem in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Now a sophomore, Barham rotates into the lineup as well and when she’s in right field the sparks literally fly across the outfield grass and around the bases at Avitus Group Stadium. Entering the program as a freshman under 2015 senior Aubrey Conceicao is arguably the best thing that could have happened to Prince, as she has inherited the role of starting second baseman and will be a fixture there over the next three seasons. In the circle, Dettling is MSUB’s ace, her reliable right arm holding opposing hitters to an average of just .202 so far this season. Waiting in the wings is Almario, who is enjoying her first year and figures to be a frontrunner to fill into the outfield during her career. When any combination of the Sparks stars is on the field together, the unspoken connection they share is apparent. Though they are each excelling now for the Yellowjackets, their journey together began long before suiting up in the navy and gold. SPANISH-REED WAR

Standing divided: MSUB’s Spanish Springs players (left) stare down their old high school rivals from Edward C. Reed. “It’s pretty cool and I hope that it continues. I never really thought that Sparks girls were seen that much unless they played over the hill. Now that they have found this pool in Sparks I hope we keep going back to it to give players who aren’t seen as much a chance.” – Bella Rovens on the unlikely discovery of the softball talent pool in Sparks. Though Rovens and Gammon had different backgrounds for their letter of intent signings – the former at Spanish Springs High School and the latter at Edward C. Reed High – they had developed a close connection by their senior years through playing together on travel ball teams. As teammates on the Nevada Lightning, Gammon and Rovens quickly discovered the chemistry they had not only as outfielders together, but batting consecutively at the top of their team’s lineup. While Rovens’ job was to get on base for Gammon behind her, the teamwork quickly shifted to animosity when the two began playing against each other in high school.

10 | 2017 MSUB Softball Media Guide | @MSUBSoftball | www.msubsports.com

“Team and school wise we hated each other, but on the field there were times when Cori would get a hit and I’d have to tell her, ‘good job,’” Rovens commented on the long-standing rivalry between Spanish Springs and Reed. “Our schools went back and forth winning games, but I remember them beating us twice on championship day at regionals to go to the state tournament.” Gammon only shared the outfield with Rovens during travel ball, but her connection to Prince and Dettling runs much deeper into their childhood days. “My very first travel team was with Megan and Rissa, and all of our dads coached together,” Gammon said. “Megan and I went to the same school, but all the other girls went to our big rival high school.”

Gammon and Dettling as teammates at Reed High (left) and currently with the Yellowjackets (right). While Dettling and Gammon held the upper hand in the head-to-head series between the schools, Rovens was setting an early example in high school for the players she would call teammates into her college career. “I always looked up to Bella in high school, and we have both always been outfielders together,” commented Barham. “She is a well-respected player who carries herself well, and I look up to her in that aspect. I hope to become a great leader like she is.” Setting their high-school loyalty differences aside when it came time to commit to playing in college, Rovens and Gammon were interested in MSUB through the unique opportunity of both being recruited despite playing similar positions. Both entering the program as slap hitters, they couldn’t have predicted that it was just the tip of the iceberg and that many of their high-school and travel-ball teammates would follow suit in coming years. “It is weird that it has come full circle now, especially since I have known Megan and Rissa since they were nine,” Gammon said. “That’s who I started out with, and when I heard they could be coming here it was kind of surreal. Everyone’s ultimate goal is to end up playing college softball, but it’s amazing we all ended up here in Montana.”

www.msubsports.com | @MSUBSoftball | 2017 MSUB Softball Media Guide | 11

All of MSUB’s young stars cited the influence of their older teammates on their decision to commit to MSUB, knowing that the transition to life in college would be eased significantly by having familiar faces as teammates. “I remember Bella texting and calling me saying that MSUB was interested,” said Prince. “She was definitely trying to get me to come here. Amanda and I signed together, and it was really nice coming up here knowing my roommate already.” Almario is the first from Sparks to venture to MSUB without a companion in her graduating class, but agreed with Prince that the connection to the older players has helped dramatically in her adjustment to life away from home as a true freshman. “I just wanted to go to college where I knew some people,” Almario said. “I remember my freshman year of high school I definitely looked up to Bella, because she was the senior center fielder. I knew Myrissa and Amanda coming in and they were a big influence on me too.” A HOMECOMING, OF SORTS For the past seven seasons MSUB’s schedule has started with the Desert Stinger Classic softball tournament at Majestic Park in Las Vegas. Bringing together the top teams from across the west region, the tournament has become a fixture within Division II softball and provides the chance for the Sparks squad to open the year in front of their families. “The fact that we host the Stinger is really cool, and it keeps us near home with our parents and family friends,” Rovens said. “Having all of them there and being able to watch us at the beginning of the year is something we are really fortunate to have.” The eight-hour drive southeast from Sparks to Sin City is no jog in the park, but for many parents it is the best chance to watch their daughters compete. Gasner is quick to point out that the Sparks families have been some of the Yellowjackets’ biggest supporters since the connection began, a promising sign that there’s more where this quality group of athletes came from. This year’s Stinger is where Gammon and Rovens kicked off their final season together, and have since been one of just two tandems in the GNAC to start all of their team’s games batting in the first two spots in the order (Western Oregon’s Kelsie Gardner and Ryanne Huffman being the other duo). Through 17 games, Rovens leads the team with 10 runs scored and is second with Sophomore Megan Dettling has developed into MSUB’s key arm in the circle while also being effective as a hitter in the lineup a .390 on-base percentage. Gammon meanwhile has the most hits on the team this year. with 17, and is batting .321 with nine runs and a perfect 3-for-3 mark in stolen bases. Prince has taken on her role at second base in stride, ranking second on the team in RBIs (7) and playing perfect defense so far in 51 chances without an error. Now the team’s most dominant pitcher, Dettling credits Gammon’s family with getting her interested in MSUB’s program. “It all started with Cori’s dad bringing up that their team here needed a pitcher,” Dettling remembered. “That got me interested in MSUB, and coming here knowing people I could trust and have played with since I was nine made the transition easier than it would have been otherwise.” “Several of our young Sparks players had already seen significant playing time last year as freshmen and were able to experience the postseason atmosphere,” Gasner commented with reference to last year’s run to the Division II west region championship game. “Across the board, I am excited to watch all of our young players excel and I hope to continue recruiting from the Sparks area.” 12 | 2017 MSUB Softball Media Guide | @MSUBSoftball | www.msubsports.com

BEE THE LEGACY “Every time we go home and people ask us about playing in Montana, we only have positive things to say. They hear and see how much fun we are having up here and it is what they want. People keep coming so they must know we have something good going on up here.” – Myrissa Prince on the Sparks-Billings connection. In MSUB’s game against Dixie State on Feb. 13, the team’s lineup card featured Rovens, Gammon, Prince, and Dettling batting 1-through-4, with Barham batting ninth to create a series of five consecutive hitters from Sparks. Never before had all five been on the diamond together for the same team, and learning as a unit within the Yellowjacket program has been crucial in their growth as players and people. “A big thing for us is to make sure people keep having fun playing,” Rovens commented on her leadership role on the team. “Cori is done after this year and I only have one more year, and it just goes by fast. No matter what, we need to make sure we enjoy every second of it and make sure all of us are helping each other enjoy the experience.” Filling roles today with the ‘Jackets that haven’t changed over the last decade, Rovens bats leadoff and Gammon follows in a one-two punch of speed. Their communication is largely unspoken, often times eye contact on the bases or a Gammon (above) and Rovens were the first two from Sparks to discreet nod of the head signaling exactly what one’s next move will be to the commit to the MSUB program more than four years ago. other. “We don’t even need to talk,” Gammon said. “I just know the balls she can get to and she knows the ones I can get. I don’t think we have ever had a collision.” “Bella and Cori have made a significant impact on our program, not only as players but as strong advocates for MSUB softball,” said Gasner. “They truly bought into the program as freshmen, and opened up several avenues of positive communication between us and their younger teammates.” One of the team’s mantras for the 2015 season is to ‘Bee The Legacy’, a play on words encouraging players to dictate their own futures and take it upon themselves to leave the program in good hands. As a senior leader, this is a concept that Gammon has bought into and focused her energy on achieving. Her scope of influence expands even further than her own team, as other Yellowjacket programs are starting to pick up on the goldmine that Gammon and Rovens introduced four years ago. Alec Leighton and Dakota Tompkins are both Reed High graduates who are freshmen on MSUB’s baseball team, and Zack Lessinger is a freshman in the Yellowjacket men’s basketball program after a four-year prep career at Galena High School in nearby Reno, Nev. “The coolest thing was coming in with my best friend Bella, and we have lived together here all four years,” Gammon said. “We are like family and it is cool that we have been able to have this experience together.”

Yellowjacket AD Krista Montague Krista (Fjelstad) Montague is entering her 14th year of employment at MSU Billings and her fourth as director of intercollegiate athletics in 2016-17. Montague led the athletic department’s 240-plus student-athletes to another successful year on the playing field and in the classroom in 2015-16, as the cumulative grade point average surpassed 3.0 and 48 individuals earned academic all-conference honors. Montague will also serve as a mentor for the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association Mentoring Program starting in the 2016-17 academic year. In 2014-15, MSUB hosted several marquee championship events for the first time ever. In November, MSUB welcomed the 2014 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Region Championships to Billings, which included participation from 32 teams across the region. MSUB also hosted the 2014-15 GNAC Basketball Championships and the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships during the academic year. MSUB’s softball team advanced to the NCAA Division II West Region Championship game after winning the GNAC Championships title, and the Yellowjackets’ baseball team also claimed a conference title during 2014-15. During her first year at the helm of the athletic department, Montague successfully secured hosting responsibilities for the upcoming 2014 NCAA cross country west regional championships and 2014-15 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships. Montague began her employment with MSUB in July of 2002 as the department’s development and marketing director. Shortly after being hired, she was appointed to the position of senior woman administrator, making her the highest-ranking female administrator in the athletic department. When Montana State University Billings announced the hiring of Montague as its new athletic director on May 10, 2013, it became the first NCAA institution in Montana to have a female athletic director. In 2005, the titles of assistant AD and NCAA compliance coordinator were added to her duties, while she still managed the corporate partnership program and special events for the department. In 2009, Montague was promoted to associate AD. As associate AD, her primary responsibilities included overseeing and managing NCAA II compliance for each of the 17 sports and co-ed cheer, as well serving as a crucial member of the athletics administration team and academic liaison between the different campus constituencies and athletics. Montague, a native of Eastern Montana, received her undergraduate degree in business administration with an option in marketing in 1999 from MSU Billings. Montague was a four-year letterwinner for the MSUB women’s basketball team and left the program with the school record for career free-throw percentage. As a senior, Montague helped MSU Billings to the West Region Championship and the program's first and only Elite Eight appearance in women’s basketball. Montague is a member of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) and NACWAA (National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators), as well as various other state and local organizations. In 201112, she served on NACWAA’s Legislation & Governance Committee, and also served as a member of the NCAA II Softball West Regional Advisory Committee in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Before joining the MSU Billings athletic staff full time, Montague was the athletic department’s part-time corporate partnership director and held various positions for DD Marketing (Pueblo, Colo.), Norwest Bank, and Billings Clinic. Montague recently completed a master's degree in public relations at MSU Billings. She lives in West Billings with her husband Brent and two daughters Shayla (14) and Allie (12). 14 | 2017 MSUB Softball Media Guide | @MSUBSoftball | www.msubsports.com

Head Coach Jessica Rayman Jessica Rayman begins her first season in charge of MSUB’s softball program in 2016-17. Rayman has spent the past five seasons as the assistant coach at NCAA Division II Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. Rayman helped lead Washburn to conference tournament appearances in 2012 and 2015, and coached 25 all-conference picks. In 2014-15, her team was recognized with the third-highest grade point average in Division II at 3.65. Rayman also spent time assisting as the athletic department’s compliance officer at Washburn, in addition to handling the softball team’s travel arrangements and day-to-day operations. Prior to her time at Washburn, Rayman was the head coach at Otero Junior College (Colo.), where she led the team to a record of 29-24 in one season at the helm. Under her guidance, Otero reached the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX national tournament. Rayman competed in softball at NCAA Division II Colorado Mesa University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2009. She went on to complete a master’s degree in the same field of study at California University of Pennsylvania in 2012.

Assistant Coach Sara Allen Sara Mason was selected as the Montana State University Billings softball assistant coach in August 2016. The former NCAA Division I player and coach had been living in Billings, Mont., since 2014 and was looking for a return to collegiate coaching. A native of California, Mason was recruited to play for the University of San Diego softball program. A catcher for the Toreros, Mason was a 3-time all-PCSC honoree and a 3-time USD offensive player of the year. Mason finished her career at USD making 182 starts for the Toreros. She hit 159-503 (.302), with 33 doubles, 12 triples, 12 homeruns, 81 RBIs, and 79 runs scored. Her senior season, Mason was named the 2006 PCSC Scholar Athlete of the Year and a 2006 ESPN Co-SIDA Academic All-American. After her time in San Diego, Mason was a graduate assistant for the softball program at Georgia Southern University from 2006-08. After earning her master’s degree from GSU, Mason accepted an assistant coaching position at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where she worked with the Braves before being drawn back west to help build a new NCAA Division I softball program. In 2009, Mason joined the Weber State University softball program as the lead assistant. The Wildcats were adding softball as a NCAA program, and Mason was involved from the ground-up. She was part of a process that recruited a complete new team for the program’s inaugural year, and was instrumental in the first two foundational seasons at WSU. Mason earned a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from the University of San Diego in 2006 and a master’s degree in social and political science from Georgia Southern University in 2008. Most recently, Mason had been involved at the Triple Play Academy in Billings, Mont., where she provided individual lessons as well as serving as a youth team coach. “I’m honored to be offered the assistant coach position for MSUB softball,” Mason commented on joining the Yellowjacket program. “I love the atmosphere and the competitive expectations of this team, from both the athletes and the athletics department. Coach Rayman has a great vision of where to take this program and I’m really excited to dig in and help put that in motion!” www.msubsports.com | @MSUBSoftball | 2017 MSUB Softball Media Guide | 15

Avitus Group Stadium

Newly named Avitus Group Stadium following the 2014 season, the Yellowjackets’ softball field sits on the main campus of MSU Billings and has been the home of the Yellowjacket softball team since 2002. The field is also used for intramural softball. Bjorgum Field is situated just north of the PE Building, which houses Alterowitz Gym and the locker room facilities. The installation of bullpens is currently underway, and is expected to be completed prior to the beginning of the 2015 season. Bjorgum Field underwent a small renovation during the summer of 2010, replacing the drainage system and the entire infield. The dirt used in the renovation came from the same spot that is used for the infield dirt at Coors Field, home of MLB's Colorado Rockies.

2017 MSUB Softball Season Preview January 31, 2017 BILLINGS, Mont. – A new era began at MSUB in 2017 as head coach Jessica Rayman took over the reins of the Yellowjacket softball program. Rayman inherited a team that finished last in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in 2016 with a record of 6-22 overall and 14-36 conference action. In the GNAC preseason coaches’ poll, MSUB was selected to finish eighth based on last year’s results. Rayman, along with assistant coach Sara Allen, lost just three seniors and inherited five all-conference honorees and one all-region selection. After winning the GNAC tournament and advancing to the west sub-region championship in 2015, the core of five returning position players and three pitchers is looking to guide its team back to the top of the conference. “I am very excited about this group of young women and getting this season started,” Rayman said. “The team has been working extremely hard at practice and I am excited to see them compete in games this year. We have a large number of returners who have experience competing in the GNAC, along with five seniors who bring great leadership and knowledge on the field.” Two-time all-GNAC honoree Bella Rovens is one of the five looking to finish her career with a strong season. Already a multiple member of the MSUB softball record book, Rovens has a chance to move up in several categories including runs where she needs just three to tie the all-time leader Terina Stacks (118, 2006-09). Last season the centerfielder finished second on the team with a .357 batting average and led the team in runs scored at 35. Senior infielder Kelsey Devlin was third on the team with a .345 batting average and fourth in the GNAC in home runs with 11. Devlin has 19 career home runs which is eighth at MSUB. The native of Great Falls, Mont., was a GNAC honorable mention selection last season, ending the season fifth in the conference in slugging percentage at .681 Three transfers from last season make up the rest of the senior class. Nicole Tiffany (Bellevue College) hit .302 last season with 29 runs. Catcher Katie Jackson (Bellevue College) made appearances in four games for the Yellowjackets with an RBI. Right-handed pitcher Taylor Tokach (Chandler Gilbert CC) made 24 appearances for MSUB, earning 10 starts and three complete games. Tokach tossed 59 1/3 innings with 15 strikeouts.

18 | 2017 MSUB Softball Media Guide | @MSUBSoftball | www.msubsports.com

The six-member junior class brings a lot of experience and depth to the roster. Outfielder Heather Tracy earned second-team D2CCA all-west region honors and first-team all-GNAC accolades. She was fourth in the GNAC with a batting average of .429, sixth in slugging percentage (.662), and eighth in on-base percentage (.461). Tracy recorded 31 runs, 24 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases. Tracy has 26 career stolen bases, just behind Rovens at 28 with the MSUB career record at 35 (Jessica Frank, 35, 2005-08). Cameron Cassinelli and Megan Dettling also earned all-GNAC honors. Cassinelli finished with a .589 slugging percentage and .406 on-base percentage. She tied with Devlin in home runs at 11 and was eighth in the conference in walks with 20. At 17 career home runs, Cassinelli needs just one more to move onto the MSUB all-time list. Dettling was a right-handed pitcher and all-conference award winner, ending the season with a GNAC-leading .209 opposing batting average. She finished fifth in the league in strikeouts with 78 and a conference-leading 6.09 per game. Dettling made 21 appearances for MSUB last season with 15 games started and seven complete games. She earned wins over nationally-ranked Sonoma State and Dixie State, posting two shutout wins on the season. With 125 career strikeouts, Dettling has already reached the MSUB top-10 list, although the native of Sparks, Nev., has a ways before matching Joey Ehnes (672, 2002-05). “Megan returns on the mound this year and we are looking to her to really set the tone on the field,” Rayman said. “Also returning is Bella, who brings great leadership in the outfield. Offensively, we return hitters like Kelsey and Heather who will be large contributors to our order.” Juniors Myrissa Prince, Katlyn Stringari, and Amanda Barham all saw time for the Yellowjackets last season. Prince hit .338 and was second on the team with 33 RBIs. The second baseman earned GNAC Player of the Week honors batting 7-for-14 with four singles, a double, a triple, and two home runs in a four-game home series against Saint Martin’s. Stringari saw action in 17 games with eight hits and six runs. Barham made appearances in 22 games with six hits and two stolen bases. The Yellowjackets have eight underclassmen on the roster. Sophomore catcher Tylee Oxendahl is the lone transfer on the roster and is from Dawson Community College. Sophomore Jessica Bagnell had 11 hits in 26 games. At shortstop, Bagnell had 35 putouts. Joining Tokach and Dettling on the pitching staff is freshman Maddy Lincoln. The 6-foot-1 left-handed pitcher will be expected to provide immediate contributions in the circle for MSUB. “Along with our returners, we have three freshmen and one transfer,” Rayman said. “As a whole we have a great amount of talent and I am extremely excited to see us grow together as a team this season.” The 2017 season begins with a 14-game, nine-day road trip to Nevada and Utah. The Yellowjackets officially begin competition at the MSUB-hosted Desert Stinger tournament in Las Vegas, Feb. 3-5. The ‘Jackets open with the University of Sioux Falls on Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. Pacific time. At the eighth annual Desert Stinger, MSUB will face five teams. For the complete schedule visit the tournament home page here. From Las Vegas, the ‘Jackets head north to St. George, Utah to play four single games before taking part in the Dixie State tournament Feb. 9-11. Senior Bella Rovens.

“We begin our season at the Desert Stinger and Dixie State tournaments where we will face some very good competition,” Rayman commented. “This will be a good gauge to see where we are at and what we will still need to get better. We later jump into a tough GNAC schedule, which I am excited to see us compete for a spot in the conference tournament.” The Yellowjackets open their GNAC slate with a four-game series at Western Washington Mar. 4-5. The first home games of the year will be against Western Oregon Mar. 18-19 at Avitus Group Stadium. MSUB will head to California the following week for the Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State Mar. 31-Apr.2. The top-4 teams in the league advance to the GNAC tournament May 4-6 hosted this year by Saint Martin’s in Lacey, Wash. All Yellowjacket home games are contested at Avitus Group Stadium on the campus of Montana State University Billings. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for students and seniors. All MSUB students and children grade six and under are admitted free. A live video stream and live stats for home games will be provided on the MSUB Stretch Internet portal here. This includes all of the Desert Stinger tournament games as MSUB will be broadcasting a live web stream for all five Yellowjacket games in Las Vegas.

2016 MSUB SOFTBALL SEASON REVIEW

BILLINGS, Mont. – The 2016 Yellowjacket softball team ended the year at home in Avitus Group Stadium winning their last 4-of-6 games as MSUB sent its trio of seniors off in style. After coming off a Great Northwest Athletic Conference tournament title and deep run in the NCAA Division II tournament in 2015, this season the Yellowjackets struggled to find their team footing in the early going, often playing great against a tough opponent early, only to falter in the late innings. MSU Billings also had to contend with the loss of seven seniors from the season before, but the "Sweet16" team finished the year playing strong down the stretch, and with the loss of just three seniors, next season's outlook looks bright. With the departure of head coach Lisa Allen, assistant coach Rebekah Gasner stepped-up into the role of interim head coach for the Yellowjackets. The team was aided by interim assistant coach Katie Mitchell and graduate assistant Maddison Timoteo. The Montana State University Billings (14-36, 6-22 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) roster contained two four-year seniors in Amanda Roark and Cori Gammon. Haley Rowe transferred in last season after spending two years at Williston College. Gammon, one of six players from Sparks, Nev. on the team, started her career with fellow Nevadan, Roark, from Las Vegas, in 2013. The left fielder had her best season in a Yellowjacket uniform her final year. Gammon finished the year batting .317 with 53 hits, 10 RBI, and six stolen bases. She led the team in sacrifice bunts with seven and was second in runs scored at 32. Mid-way through the season, Gammon took over the lead-off spot for MSUB and was a strong leader for the team. For her career, Gammon finishes fifth all-time at MSUB in career at-bats with 515 and is tied for ninth in runs scored with 90. Across her four seasons, Gammon accumulated 140 hits, including 14 doubles. Her short game was exemplary as the outfielder logged 29 sacrifice hits during her time as a 'Jacket. Gammon was also a leader in the classroom, she finished a three-time all-conference academic honoree in business management and marketing. "Cori had an amazing senior season and I am proud of her accomplishments on the field and in the classroom," Gasner said on her first four-year member. "She became a solid leader for us all season and she really excelled in her role as our lead-off. She was extremely strategic at the plate, moving runners consistently and found ways to drive the ball through the 5/6 hole." Roark, a right-handed pitcher, made 71 game appearances in the circle for MSU Billings which is seventh all-time as a Yellowjacket. She completed 240 total innings of work which ranks ninth at MSUB. Her senior season, Roark made 35 total appearances which is the fifth-highest for a single season, tossing 133 and 2/3 innings which is seventh-most in a single year. Her final year with the 'Jackets, Roark tossed eight complete games and had one save. She also had 57 strikeouts, amassing 95 total in her career.

2016 MSUB SOFTBALL SEASON REVIEW "Amanda Roark became a true workhorse for us this year and grew tremendously as a senior pitcher," Gasner said on her four-year pitcher. "She really gained confidence and found her niche in the circle this year and despite throwing 133 innings, she still managed to save her best appearances for last, going strong against NNU for 3 of the 4 games." Rowe moved into the starting role as a catcher this season for the Yellowjackets. After having a year to adjust to the GNAC, the native of Billings, Mont., showed-off her quick release and accuracy from behind the plate. Rowe led the GNAC in runners caught stealing with 14 throw outs. She finished the year batting .263 with 31 hits, including three home runs. She stepped-up in several critical games and had a huge game against Saint Martin's at home, batting 3-for-3 with four RBI on two doubles. "Haley has been a great addition to our program," Gasner said. "She has been solid behind the plate for us this year, leading the GNAC in runners caught stealing. She has a strong, accurate arm and can throw out just about anybody and our team really fed off of her. She became a much needed clutch hitter for us in the lineup and was often times a spark plug that started big innings for us offensively." The Yellowjackets opened their 2016 season at the Seventh Annual Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. MSUB began the season with an upset, defeating No. 20 Sonoma State, 9-8, on Day 1. The 'Jackets played the longest game of the tournament, a 19-15 loss to Stanislaus State in the last game of the first day, but bookended their experience with a 4-0 shutout win during the last game of the tournament against Colorado Springs. Heading to St. George, Utah, MSUB took a game from No. 2 Dixie State, 4-1, and won two games at the DSU tournament before returning home. This season's spring break trip was a tough, rain-soaked affair, before the Yellowjackets opened their home season mid-March. MSUB took a game each from Saint Martin's and Western Washington at Avitus Group Stadium. The third game against the Vikings, MSU Billings won 20-14, striking a team-record 23 hits. The 'Jackets had four doubles and three home runs in the slugfest. At the Tournament of Champions in California, MSUB won a game against Cal State East Bay and played San Francisco State and Dominican to an extra inning. The last conference road trip featured a makeup series with Western Oregon as the GNAC had every team struggling to fit in games in the final weeks. At home, the Yellowjackets finished their year winning the series against Northwest Nazarene. Amanda Roark tossed the final two complete games and the final win for MSUB in sixth innings. Gammon scored the walk-off run in the 9-1 victory. "We had many great moments throughout the season and I am proud of the growth that we had," Gasner said on the transition year. "We beat some of the west region's biggest threats, and battled in a handful of extra-inning games during the Tournament of Champions. With only three seniors, we had a lot to learn about leadership and ourselves as a team and we finally started to put that together toward the end of our season. We have many positive things to look forward to for next season as we have a strong core of returners and as a coaching staff, we are excited about the direction we are headed." Supporting the senior upperclassmen, the MSUB roster carried six juniors this season, two starting as freshmen with the program and four that transferred this year. Bella Rovens is a four-year member of the team having redshirted her first season. The center fielder came on strong in the second half of her junior campaign. After registering a batting average in the .270 range midway through, Rovens had a big series at home against Western Washington, batting 9-for-13 at the plate. She also robbed two home runs from over the center field fence at Avitus Group Stadium, one of which would have a been a grand slam. Rovens ended the year a second-team all-conference selection. She moved up in the ranks, improving her plate appearances, finishing the year second on the team in batting average at .357 and second in hits with 56. She led the team in runs scored with 35 and was second in on-base percentage at .423. Rovens tied for the most doubles with seven and was second in walks with 18. She finished the year with one home run, but made it a statement hit, striking the ball hard in the final game of the season for a 3-RBI rocket against Northwest Nazarene. In her three seasons at MSUB, Rovens is poised to break records. She is already seventh at MSUB in career hits with 161, needing 51 to catch the leader Terina Stacks. Rovens is also fourth in stolen bases with 28 and needs sevens more to tie the record-holder Jessica Frank. She also has 462 at-bats and needs just nine more to break into the top-10. She is also capable of breaking the all-time record of 571 held by Emily Osborn, if she stays on pace with her previous season's totals. www.msubsports.com | @MSUBSoftball | 2017 MSUB Softball Media Guide | 63

2016 MSUB SOFTBALL SEASON REVIEW "Bella had another stellar season as a Yellowjacket and continues to be a consistent hitter for this program," Gasner said. "In the off-season, she spent time working on hitting from the left side and was able to use her power in key moments for us. Her speed in the outfield along with her overall awareness led to many key moments this year. She robbed two big homeruns over the centerfield fence, made multiple diving plays and had several outfield assists." Kelsey Devlin earned GNAC honorable mention accolades this season. The junior spent time as the designated hitter and in the infield for the 'Jackets this season. Her bat and command in the infield were a steady presence for the Yellowjackets. In California at the Tournament of Champions, Devlin ended the five games against west region teams batting .412. She had seven hits, two home runs, and five RBI against tough Division II competition. She was just the second player of the season to hit a home run off the leading pitcher in the west region and was 2-for-3 against the No. 2 pitcher. For her junior campaign, she recorded a team third-best .335 batting average, leading the Yellowjackets in slugging percentage at .681. She was third in RBI with 28. Devlin hit seven doubles and 11 home runs this year. Devlin's slugging percentage is the fifth-best at MSUB in a single season, just behind Steph Gosselin's .695 from 2009. Her 11 home runs ties her for the sixth-best year as a Yellowjacket. Devlin has amassed 19 career home runs which sets her in a tie for eighth all-time with Stacks. She needs another 11 next season to tie Osborn at No. 2 and 16 more to tie the all-time leader Kelly Parsons. Devlin has also struck 16 career doubles. Next season she will need an additional six to break into the MSUB top-10. "Kelsey's approach at the plate this season was key to her success as a hitter," Gasner said. "As the season wore on, she became more patient, started seeing more pitches during her at-bats, and adjusted well to timing. As a result, she was able to become even more of a threat in our line-up. Kelsey also had significant growth defensively and became more aggressive in knocking down balls in the 5/6 hole and drop-stepping to catch balls over her shoulder." The Yellowjackets picked up four junior transfers this season: infielder Ryland Estrada, right-handed pitcher Taylor Tokach, catcher Katie Jackson, and infielder Nicole Tiffany. Estrada and Tokach both transferred from Chandler Gilbert College. In the infield for MSUB, Estrada showed her athleticism and accuracy. At third base, the junior accumulated 26 putouts. Where the native of Arizona really came alive was in the batter's box and on the bases with her speed. Estrada made appearances in 21 games for MSUB, finishing the season with a .340 batting average, 18 hits, nine RBI, two doubles, two triples, and a home run. Tokach made appearances in 24 games for the 'Jackets. She started 10 games and tossed 10 complete contests recording one save. In 59 and 1/3 innings, Tokach struck out 15 batters while walking just 19. With a season of GNAC competition under her belt, the right-handed hurler will be looking to make her mark next year. Jackson, a transfer from Bellevue College, is from Kent, Wash. The catcher saw time in four games for MSUB. She had 10 putouts for the team and scored two runs on offense. From Nine Miles Falls, Wash., Tiffany spent her first two collegiate seasons at Bellevue College with Jackson. The infielder earned a starting role on this year's team with her consistency and accuracy in the batter's box. Tiffany played in 38 games this season. As either a pinch hitter or from the DH role, Tiffany finished the year batting .302. She had 29 hits, two doubles, three home runs, and 19 RBI. She scored 16 runs for the team and stole two bases. She had a big hit in the game against Dominican at the Tournament of Champions, tying the game with a 2-RBI home run in the sixth inning. She finished the season on a five-game hit streak, adding her last two home runs in the series at home against Northwest Nazarene. "We had four tremendous transfers this year, each of them stepping up and owning their own roles as Yellowjackets," Gasner said on the four junior transfers. "Ryland did a great job utilizing her speed at the plate to hit behind the runner and advance multiple bases and her quick first step became an asset at third base, keeping slappers and bunters at bay. Taylor had a handful of solid games for us on the mound and came in strong several times to shut down innings. She has a high softball IQ and uses it to keep batters off-balance. Nikki truly embraced her role as a designated hitter. She became one of our most consistent hitters with runners on base and the team looked to her on several occasions to get the clutch hits. Katie had some great games for us behind the plate. She has worked hard to build strong relationships with our pitchers this season."

2016 MSUB SOFTBALL SEASON REVIEW In her second season with the Yellowjackets, right fielder Heather Tracy broke open her collegiate career recording one of the best season's in Yellowjacket program history. The native of Boise, Idaho., was a first-team all-conference honoree and finished third in the GNAC with a .429 batting average. She led the team in hits (57), on-base percentage (.461), triples (three), and stolen bases (16). In the GNAC, Tracy finished in the top-10 in five major offensive categories and was the only player in the top-30 batting average with more than 15 stolen bases. At .662, her slugging percentage was just behind Devlin's for sixth in the conference and the ninth-highest in Yellowjacket history. Tracy's outstanding season has her listed seven times in the MSUB record books. Her batting average of .429 is the third-best ever in the Yellowjacket program. She tied the tenth-best season in hits. She is tied for first in triples with three and the most stolen bases in a single game with three (at Seattle, Mar. 9). Her speed helped the outfielder round the base paths and led to 16 stolen bases for the second-most in a single season at MSUB. For her career, in just two years, Tracy is tied for sixth all-time at MSUB in stolen bases with 26 and needs just nine more to tie the alltime record. Dangerous at the plate and on-base, Tracy also showcased her abilities in the outfield. She made just two errors for a .972 fielding percentage. She totaled five assists and on one occasion threw-out Concordia's lead-off runner attempting to turn a double into a triple, but Tracy made a dynamic throw from far right field to third for the out. "Although Heather is just a sophomore, she has already made an impact in our program and the GNAC," Gasner said. "She has become a tremendous triple threat in our line-up and has the capability to beat any defense. She puts pressure on opponents not only in the batter's box, but on the bases. She is a smart baserunner and takes advantage of both physical and mental errors. In the outfield, she has a strong, accurate arm, and has done a great job this season throwing runners out and keeping them from advancing to scoring position." While sophomore Megan Dettling struggled with a lower back injury this season, the right-handed pitcher earned honorable mention all-conference honors seeing time in 21 games. Dettling led the GNAC in opposing batting average at .209. She finished the year with 89 and 2/3 innings of work and the most wins on the Yellowjacket pitching staff with seven. In her second season, Dettling posted complete game wins over nationally-ranked Sonoma State and Dixie State. She also tossed the complete game 1-hit shutout over Hawaii Hilo at the DSU Tournament. Dettling struck out a season-high eight batters in the win over UC Colorado Springs at the Desert Stinger Tournament and went the distance in her last game at home – in seven innings she completed 158 pitches in a come-from-behind win over Northwest Nazarene. In just her second season, Dettling has climbed onto the MSUB all-time list at No. 9 with 125 total strikeouts. She was fifth in the GNAC this year with 78 total and had the highest average per game at 6.09. Dettling added her bat to the Yellowjacket lineup this year recording 11 hits in 39 at-bats. She scored eight runs, 8 RBI, and two home runs, including the first of her collegiate career in a game at Dixie State. "Megan has done a great job this season battling through adversity," Gasner said on the sophomore pitcher. "She worked hard this fall to become a dominate pitcher on the mound for us this year as well as a power hitter in our line-up. Despite being injured, she managed to gain the respect of the conference and still end the season with an honorable mention. I am hopeful that she is now on the uphill climb in her recovery and I am looking forward to seeing her back on the mound next fall." After earning GNAC Most Valuable Tournament honors as a freshman, Cameron Cassinelli returned to the MSUB roster a seasoned player taking second-team all-conference honors this year. In her sophomore effort, Cassinelli moved to not only a starting position at first base, but added the role of pitcher to her game. Cassinelli matched Devlin for fourth in the GNAC in home runs with 11 and was seventh in the conference in walks with 20. The utility pitcher made nine appearances in the circle for MSUB, tossing 19 and 2/3 innings. She recorded eight strikeouts and pitched a season-high 4 and 1/3 innings in a game at British Columbia. Cassinelli continued to be an impact player for the ‘Jackets at the plate. She finished the season with 38 hits and a team-leading 37 RBI. She was third on the team in on-base percentage at .406 and in slugging percentage at .589. She had two home runs in a single game against Dixie State along with a season-high five RBI. www.msubsports.com | @MSUBSoftball | 2017 MSUB Softball Media Guide | 65

2016 MSUB SOFTBALL SEASON REVIEW "Cameron has the power to change a game during any at bat and has become a feared hitter for any pitcher," Gasner said. "She is another key spark plug in our line up and is overall, just a fun hitter to watch in the batter's box. Defensively, Cameron stepped into new role for us this season as a member of the pitching staff and so far, she has been a great addition. She compliments our hard throwing pitchers very well. She has a lot of movement and a deceiving change up and is effective in keeping hitters off balance." Second baseman Myrissa Prince has the distinction of being the only player on the roster this season to earn GNAC Player of the Week honors. She accomplished the feat during the home series against Saint Martin's, batting 7-for-14 with four singles, a double, a triple and two home runs. For the season, Prince was fourth on the team with a .338 batting average. She was second in RBI at 33 and fourth in hits (44), home runs (6), slugging percentage (.554), and on-base percentage (.406). At second base, Prince had 101 putouts with six errors for a team fourth-best .969 fielding percentage. "Although Myrissa didn't see much playing time as a freshman last year, she stepped out on the field this season as if she had been there all along," Gasner said. "She showed a great deal of growth for us as a young leader and pulled the team together in tough situations. She accepted a lot of responsibility as a sophomore and in return, quickly gained the respect of her teammates." Sophomore Katlyn Stringari and Jordyn Roark were two of three players to see time at shortstop this year. With the loss of GNAC Player of the Year Taylor Hoke, the No. 6 position on the field was a tough one to fill. "Kate and Jordyn battled at shortstop all season, both working hard to take ownership," Gasner said. "Jordyn has a strong approach at the plate and capitalized in tough situations. Kate does a great job communicating out on defense; she is quick and aggressive and was able to knock down several hard hits this season." Stringari made appearances in 17 games for MSUB recording 39 at-bats with eight hits and four RBI. Roark saw time in 15 games this season. She recorded 33 at-bats with eight hits, including two doubles. Outfielders Amanda Barham and Alyssa Yaeger complete the sophomore class. Barham started 10 and made appearances in 22 games this season. At the plate, she had six hits in 32 at-bats. With her speed, Yaeger was primarily used as a pinch runner, scoring 12 runs with a stolen base. Amanda is an extremely smart and aggressive player," Gasner said. "She has a strong arm in the outfield and really knows her range well. At the plate, she has the ability to put the ball in play and use her speed to move around the bases. Alyssa continues to play a huge impact on our team. She works hard on the field, in the weight room, and in the classroom and finds ways to motivate her teammates to do the same. She scored multiple runs for us this season and became a reliable baserunner that we could look to in any situation." The Yellowjackets welcomed a large freshmen class with shortstop Jessica Bagnell, second baseman Erin Watterud, outfielder Vanessa Almario, catcher Madison Kelly, outfielder Justyce Connole, catcher Jackie Preciado, and second baseman Jensen Johnson. A redshirt freshman, Bagnell was the third member of the trio to see time at shortstop. She started 26 games, logging 11 hits in 53 at-bats with three runs. She also walked seven times and added two sacrifice flies and one sacrifice hit. Billings native, Watterud, played in three games, recording her first collegiate hit, a RBI single, in a home game against Concordia. Almario also saw action in three games, logging her first career hit against Saint Martin's. "We had a large freshmen class this year and they worked hard this season to build relationships on the field to help them find success," Gasner said. "Jessica had some great moments at shortstop this season, helping Haley throw out runners at second and committing to the tag. Vanessa had a few great pinch hits for us and earned her first start in a home game against St. Martin's. Erin is a strong second baseman with significant amount of range. Maddie grew a lot as a catcher this season. She has a quick transfer and a strong glove behind the plate and worked hard to build a strong pitcher/catcher relationship with Megan. Justyce brings a sense of positive energy to the team and is developing into a power hitter. Jackie and Jensen both redshirted this season and will be back ready for action in their second year." Seven Yellowjackets on the roster were named to the GNAC all-academic team. Along with Gammon, Rowe, Yaeger, Jordyn Roark, Stringari, Barham, and Prince were also honored by the conference for their work in the classroom. The final name on the 2016 roster may by the most special. After watching the MSUB men's soccer team develop a relationship with their team member Sebastien Easton, this year the softball team was able to draft their own player through Team IMPACT, Bria Koch. The 10 year-old was signed to the team at the end of the season, just before the last two series at home. During a special Draft Day, Bria and her parents Bonnie and Brad were part of a press conference announcing the addition of the newly signed player and welcomed to the team through activities that included being assigned a locker in the MSUB team room, warming-up before the Yellowjacket doubleheader, and throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. "In our short time of getting to know Bria, our team has already started to build a positive relationship with her and her family," Gasner said on the youngest member of the Yellowjacket team. "Draft day was especially memorable for everyone; the team was truly moved by Bria's presence. She has been a great addition to our program and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Team IMPACT. We plan to stay connected with Bria throughout the summer and I know the entire team will be excited to see her when they return in the fall."

Haley Rowe catches on quickly as beloved backstop for ‘Jackets Friday, March 18, 2016 In just her second season, Yellowjacket softball senior Haley Rowe has grown into a universally-respected leader as the team’s starting catcher. MSUB SPORTS – There’s something Montana State University Billings softball senior Haley Rowe has always enjoyed about catching. The command entrusted to the catcher as the field general, and ability to handle a team’s pitching staff stick out as the obvious necessities for the position. “It has always felt like an important role to me,” Rowe said. “I’m happy that I stuck with it and it’s what I really get to focus on here.” Rowe is in her second season with the Yellowjackets after transferring from Williston State College in North Dakota, and has been handed crucial responsibility as the team’s senior leader behind the plate. Being one of just three seniors on the team this season has necessitated Rowe breaking out of her shell and becoming a leader, and she has carried the task of guiding the pitching staff and younger players well. Now as Rowe and the ‘Jackets prepare to open their 2016 home season on Saturday at Avitus Group Stadium against Saint Martin’s University, her family’s presence will remind her she’s happy with her decision to transfer to MSUB. A Great Falls, Mont., native, Rowe’s parents Rhonda and Paul Rowe are Eastern Montana College alumni and have since relocated to Billings in time for their daughter’s final year of college softball. “It’s amazing to be a Montana player at MSUB, because it shows people that you can go on to play college softball if you’re from Montana,” Rowe said. “It’s just great to be a part of the town I grew up in, and on a team that I watched play in the past.” From calling pitches to cutting down potential base stealers, Rowe has lived through catching throughout her career and has set the stage for the next generation of Yellowjacket backstops for years to come.

BACK TO BILLINGS Originally growing up in Billings, Rowe became acquainted with the athletic programs at a young age through her exposure to Yellowjacket volleyball and basketball camps from her parents. Learning the ropes in everything from hockey, football, and basketball, Rowe was determined to keep up with her older brother Logan’s exploration of different sports. “I started playing teeball and then after little league I got into ASA softball around age 12,” Rowe remembered referring to her first Amateur Softball Association club travel ball team. “ASA really got me started into being more competitive with it.” Rowe’s father urged her to stick with catching, despite her desire to try pitching and playing shortstop. Paul recognized from a young age that his daughter had a strong arm and was quick with the ball. Most importantly, he knew that she was tough enough to handle the most physically grueling defensive position on the diamond. “His confidence in me really narrowed it down and made me feel like I was good enough to be a catcher,” Rowe said. “When I got to high school and lettered my freshman year, I started to think, ‘hey I’m pretty good at this.’” By her junior season, Rowe was apprehensive in continuing her softball career after high school, when Charles M. Russell High School brought in a new head softball coach in Lindsey Graham. The North Dakota State University alum immediately began shifting the culture of the program, and turned players like Rowe into certified college prospects. “She took me aside and told me I could do bigger, greater things if I continued with softball,” Rowe said on Graham. “She told all of us that this could be a future and that if we kept working hard good things could happen. She really believed in me that I could keep playing and that was very influential in my choice to continue playing softball.” Rowe soon garnered an offer to play at Williston State, where she put Graham’s advice into practice and gained two years of valuable college experience. By the time MSUB came calling after her sophomore season, Rowe was ready to get back to her roots and step up to the NCAA Division II level with the Yellowjackets. ROWE’S THROWS “Softball taught me to be strong and confident in my abilities, and to be very disciplined. It taught me to treat others with respect, and has made me an outgoing, confident, and allaround good person.” – Haley Rowe on how softball has shaped her. Though she was limited in playing time behind 2015 senior Brittney Sanders, Rowe has inherited the starting role as a senior this season. Rowe’s patience and understanding of last year’s situation with Sanders as the regular starter stood out to MSUB head coach Rebekah Gasner, who recognized that Rowe had the maturity and mindset to one day make the position her own. “Although Haley didn’t see as much playing time as she would have liked, she played a crucial role in our success last season,” Gasner said. “She knew and accepted her role at that time and never once complained. At the end of last season, I knew she was more than ready to take over as a senior catcher and leave her stamp on our program.” Not surprisingly, Rowe has adapted quickly and handled the task of becoming a leader well, explaining that her competitive drive pushed her to make the role as a starter hers.

Playing 17 games behind the plate this season, only one player in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has thrown out more runners than Rowe’s number of five (Simon Fraser’s Katherine Murnaghan, 8). Coach Gasner credits Rowe’s quick transfer and ability to throw from her knees as key skills that have led to her success in cutting down baserunners. Not many defensive situations have the potential to shift a game’s momentum, and a catcher throwing out a runner ranks towards the top among double plays or an outfielder nailing a speedster trying to advance. It is one of the moments Rowe longs for and plans her entire approach around. “In my mind, I’m just thinking that I have to catch everything, release, and throw if I see her going,” Rowe said regarding situations with a fast runner on base. “You just have to believe in your mind that you can throw out anyone who tries to steal. It is a great feeling when you get that speedy runner out, and you can tell it creates an excitement among your teammates.” Rowe’s leadership characteristics began developing in her time at Williston State, as she was called upon quickly to step up as a freshman on the squad. Being tested right away has helped her naturally fit in with the ‘Jackets, and her teammates have come to fully trust Rowe with calling the shots behind the plate. “Being with this group of girls is nice, and they are a great support system,” Rowe said. “When one of my teammates makes an amazing play I get pretty pumped. It makes me happy that I continued playing softball.” COACHING THE CATCHING CORE “Haley is extremely personable, so our younger catchers are very comfortable seeking her advice. With any young player, they are looking for someone to show them the ropes, and I think Haley is a positive influence on them.” – MSUB head coach Rebekah Gasner on senior catcher Haley Rowe. Catch a glimpse of one of MSUB’s practices and you’d never guess Rowe is not even two years into her MSUB career. As the players separate into their positional groups to work on defensive exercises, the senior confidently corrals the catching contingency and calls commands out to the group. One of four catchers on the team this season, Rowe is the lone returner as freshmen Madison Kelly and Jackie Preciado, and junior transfer Katie Jackson have looked to Rowe for advice and leadership. “I like having someone older to look up to, and to learn new catching skills that I can use in the future,” Kelly said. “Haley is a really hard worker, and I know I need to work that hard to potentially be a starting catcher.” Rowe’s approach to leading the younger catchers hinges on her open, calm attitude, displaying her commitment to ensuring the program is left in good hands upon her departure at the end of the season. From catching-specific advice to treating all her teammates with respect, Rowe believes she is displaying the traits that her successors will need to possess during their careers as Yellowjackets. While Rowe has gained the trust of her fellow catchers, the fate of MSUB’s pitching staff is often times in her hands as well. No player or coach has quite the impact that Rowe can have in terms of influencing a pitcher’s mindset when she’s in the circle. Particularly, the bond Rowe has fostered with fellow senior and right-handed pitcher Amanda Roark extends well beyond the pitches Rowe calls. “It’s awesome having her there because she knows my pitches so well and she’s very good at helping me fix things,” Roark said. “I love pitching to her because we mesh well. Haley is very down to earth and cares about everyone. She does her best to help the team and support them, and she always stands up for all of her teammates.”

70 | 2017 MSUB Softball Media Guide | @MSUBSoftball | www.msubsports.com

Having been a Yellowjacket pitcher herself, Gasner understands the importance of having a reliable catcher who can adapt to a variety of different pitchers. “Haley is a very calm, laid back person and has done a great job building strong relationships with our pitching staff,” Gasner said. “Having a close pitcher-catcher relationship is vital to the success of the pitcher and our team as a whole.” In addition to holding one of the top fielding percentages on the team at .963, Rowe has shown flashes of potential at the plate as well. On Feb. 12 against Cal Baptist, Rowe launched her first career home run with MSUB. SERVING A BIGGER PURPOSE Known to her teammates as ‘Hay Row’, Rowe is determined to help lead the squad towards a return to the GNAC Championships this season. She often reflects on the memory of last season’s tournament title, a run that taught her and her teammates alike volumes about camaraderie and working towards a collective goal. Rowe’s leadership within softball extends beyond her current Yellowjacket teammates, as her younger sisters Kylie and Kendall couldn’t have a better role model. Kendall is 11 and is exploring a variety of sports just as Haley did, while Kylie is a senior softball stud at Billings Senior High School and gets to watch her sister play up the street at MSUB. While Rowe’s short-term focus is on helping the team play to its highest potential, she has already created a strong vision for her career path in life after softball. Rowe will receive her bachelor’s degree in human services this spring, and will enroll into MSUB’s graduate studies program with hopes of pursuing a career as an elementary school counselor. If Rowe has learned anything through her career as a softball player, it’s to dream big and never limit her potential to grow. It is with this mindset that Rowe carries her ambition of one day opening her own adoption agency, her passion for helping others extending far beyond her role as a mentor on the diamond. “My dad was adopted so that really opened my eyes to it,” Rowe said. “I think kids should have the best opportunities possible available to them, and this would be a great way to provide that for them. I would like to give kids a chance to live with great parents and live good lives.” Roark is one teammate who recognizes that the manner in which Rowe carries herself extends into her personal life and is consistent whether she has the catching gear strapped on or is studying for one of her classes. “She’s very selfless, and she always puts other people first, not just in softball,” Roark said. “She just works hard, and is very nurturing and supportive.” Roark and her fellow teammates and coaches alike recognize they are in good hands with Rowe as their senior catcher, as countless others will soon be, in the impactful life she is destined to lead serving others.
