MSU Billings track and field is opening its 2016 outdoor season in Bozeman, Mont. BILLINGS, Mont. – MSU Billings track and field will begin its 2016 outdoor season at the Montana State University Open in Bozeman, Mont., on Saturday, Mar. 26. The Yellowjackets have not been to a competition since the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championship on Feb. 19. “This should be a good meet to open the outdoor season,” MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. “It will be fairly small meet, but the biggest unknown for us will be the weather. They are expecting snow through Friday so we’re hoping the track will clear up for Saturday morning. The temperatures will be cold, regardless, which could affect the sprints and jumps.”

At the meet, MSUB has twelve men and seven women entered to compete. Nate Vanderby and Austin Lindquist will be rejoining the squad after both redshirting the indoor season. Vanderby will be trying to better his MSUB 400 meter record (49.12) he set last year and Lindquist will be going after the 100 meter hurdles mark. Robert Peterson will be starting back-up after competing in the NCAA Indoor Championships three weeks ago. Peterson holds MSUB records in the 1500 meters (3:51.59) and the 5,000 meters (14:53.27). Last year, Peterson placed third in the 1500 meters at the GNAC Outdoor Championship. Vanderby placed seventh in the men's 400 meters in 49.30 and thrower Nels Flanagan added another point for the MSUB men's team with his second eighth-place finish at the conference meet, in the hammer throw with a distance of 44.97 meters. “Nate and Austin worked very hard over the winter and should be ready to go this outdoor season,” Coppock said. “Robert still feels pretty good coming off the indoor season and he’ll open up with the 1500 meters this weekend. Garrett Love looks in very good shape and will be running the 10,000 meters to try and hit a good mark early and get the conference qualifying out of the way.” Also, competing for the men’s team is senior Cameron Stanek in the 100 and 400 meters and the javelin. Distance runners Jorey Egeland, Ivan Colmenero, and Tyus Mendoza are set for the 5,000 meters. Freshman Quincy Wittman will compete in the 110 meter hurdles along with Lindquist as well as in the hammer throw. In the throws, Brady Ostermiller is entered in all three – discus, hammer, and shot put. Flanagan is competing in the discus and hammer throw. Cole Campbell is rejoining the outdoor team after redshirting last season and is set for the pole vault. For the women, in the sprints Blair Street will compete in the 100 and 200 meters and Bessie Gondwe is also entered in the 200 meters. Devin McDonald is entered in the 800 meters and Jinise Trueblood will compete for the ‘Jackets in the 5,000 meters. Amanda Nichols is coming off a sixth-place result at the GNAC Indoor Championship and will compete in the pole vault. Janessa Williams is entered in the long and triple jump as well as the 100 meter hurdles. Fellow freshman Shaniah Schwend will also double in the long and triple jumps. Della Lyle, who placed fourth in the 5,000 meters and seventh in the 3,000 meters at the GNAC Indoor Championship, will miss the meet while attending some interviews. Expected to compete at the meet are host Montana State University, the University of Montana, MSU Billings, Carroll College, Rocky Mountain College, and the University of Great Falls.
