The underclassmen put together a good opening showing during the first indoor track and field meet for MSU Billings of 2016. RAPID CITY, S.D. – The underclassmen put together a solid opening meet for the MSUB women’s track and field team as the Yellowjackets travelled to Black Hills State for the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open Saturday at the Young Center Fieldhouse. At the meet, MSU Billings and Black Hills State were joined by fellow NCAA Division II schools Chadron State and South Dakota School of Mines. Women’s Results Sophomore Josey Smiedala, the MSUB record holder in the indoor 400 meters, finished second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.72. Smiedala also ran the anchor leg of the MSUB team that won the 4x400 meter relay. Smiedala was
joined on the squad by Michaela Johnson (freshman), Jewlz Collins (freshman), and Janessa Williams (sophomore) as the Yellowjackets won the event in 4:17.21. Johnson, a product of Billings West High School, placed second in the 60 meter hurdles in 9.36, just .05 seconds off the 2015 MSUB record from Hope Reid. In the middle distance events, freshman Lydia Foster was fourth in the mile with a time of 5:53.89. Krysten Mossburg finished fifth in the 800 meters at 2:57.90. At the longer distances, Nikki Aiken was fourth in the 3,000 meters (11:58.21), followed by Sarah Beatty in fifth (12:58.81). In the jumps, Williams placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 33-4.50. Mossburg was third in the long jump at 15-11.50. In the high jump, freshmen Jaime Orme and Halie Warren tied for fifth at a height of 4-10.25. Freshman Hailey Steinbeisser led the Yellowjackets in the throws. The native of Sidney, Mont., placed second in the shot put at 37-1.75. Men’s Results On the men’s team, Jorey Egeland, Braden Rykal, and Chuck Carr turned-in top performances for MSUB. Egeland, a junior from Billings, Mont., was second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:04.18. The product of Billings Senior High School is transitioning from a strong season on the MSUB men’s cross country team. Rykal, a freshman from Boulder, Mont., finished fourth in the 60 meters (7:19) and fourth in the 200 meters (23.73). At those times, Rykal is .14 seconds from the MSUB 60 meter record, and 1.08 seconds from the MSUB record in the 200 meters. Carr, a freshman from Bozeman, Mont., placed second in both the high jump (6-.04.75) and long jump (20-.04.50). Just behind him in the long jump was fellow freshman Marcus Lindquist who cleared a mark of 20-04.25. Lindquist was also fourth in the triple jump at 41-02.25. Other top-5 finishes for MSUB included Josh Panasuk in the mile with a time of 4:33.80. In the throws, Nels Flanagan was fourth in the weight throw at 52-1.25, which is just behind the MSUB record of 52-2.75. In the shot put, Brady Ostermiller placed fifth at 46-0.75.
