The Yellowjackets are heading for the Dave Little Alumni Mile hosted by Black Hills State. BILLINGS, Mont. – The Yellowjacket track and field teams are headed to Black Hills State for the Dave Little Alumni Mile on Saturday, Jan. 21. Montana State University Billings is coming off a successful return to indoor competition after last week’s event in Bozeman. “We are coming off a good opener at Montana State,” MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. “The team looked better than expected after that long holiday break so we will continue to look for improvement each week.” Expected to compete at the meet with MSUB in South Dakota are Black Hills State, South Dakota Mines, and Dickinson State.

MSU Billings will be without the three record setters from last week as Sam Zook, Austin Lindquist, and Nels Flanagan will be competing at a big meet hosted by the Air Force Academy in Colorado. In Bozeman, all three athletes lowered their own respective MSUB records in the 60 meters, the 60 meter hurdles, and the men’s weight throw. “This week will still be a pretty competitive meet so we are excited to see what the team can accomplish,” Coppock continued. “We will be without Sam, Austin, and Nels as they will be competing at a large meet hosted by the Air Force Academy to see if they can possible attain NCAA provisional qualifying marks.” Close to a Yellowjacket record last week was freshman Chuck Carr. The 6-foot-4 freshman from Bozeman, Mont., placed third at the MSU Open with a height of 6-04.75, 1.25 from matching Mark Halland’s 1972 MSUB record of 6-.06. At the meet in Spearfish, Kaelen Shay and Braden Rykal will look to improve on their marks from last week. Both competed to top-5 finishes in the 60 meters with Shay in third (7.18) and Rykel fourth (7.20). They will be joined by freshman Beau Ackerman. Coach Coppock is also looking for strong performances from Landon Polkow and Nate Vanderby in the 400 meters. Brady Ostermiller will compete in the shot put. In the distance events, Garrett Love and Josh Panasuk are entered in the 5,000 meters. The women’s team opened with good results from their underclassmen. Michaela Johnson is set to compete in the sprints and hurdles in South Dakota. Jamie Orme finished fifth in the high jump last week at the MSU Open with a mark of 5-01.00 and will look to better her height. The MSUB record holder in the 400 meters, sophomore, Josey Smiedala is entered in the 400 and 800 meters. Freshman Brenna Beckett will compete in the long jump. Also in the jumps, Janessa Williams and Shaniah Schwend are entered in the triple jump. Freshman Hailey Steinbeisser placed sixth last week in the women’s shot put with a throw 35-04.00. “This meet should help keep us progressing before we have an open week next week,” Coppock said. “Then we will make the final push towards the Conference Championships in mid-February.” Dave Little Alumni Mile Black Hills State University January 21, 2017 Field Events: 10:00am Weight Throw (W, M); Shot Put to follow (W, M) 10:00am Long Jump (M, W); Triple Jump to follow (M, W) High Jump (W, M) Pole Vault (M, W) Running Events: (rolling schedule) 10:45am 5000m (W) 60m Hurdles (W, M) 60m Dash (W, M)
