Three men’s track and field athletes break their own MSUB school records and Sam Zook wins the 60 meters at the Montana State Open in Bozeman on Friday. BOZEMAN, Mont. – Sam Zook won the 60 meters, breaking the MSUB school record and two more Yellowjacket records fell during the Montana State University Open at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse Friday. Against competition from D1 Montana State and Montana as well as Carroll College and Rocky Mountain College, the Montana State University Billings track and field teams opened 2017 at an indoor meet in Bozeman. Zook, a 6-foot junior from Casper, Wyo., returned to competition for MSUB this season after redshirting last year, besting his own time in the 60 meters from 2015 of 7.05 with a time of 6.94 to win the event and lower the record. Zook began the indoor season at the Yellow Jacket Open in December by turning-in a performance of 7.29 in the 60 meters, but blasted through the event on Friday with a showing that has Zook with the third-best time in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this year.


“We had a great opener with our return to competition in Bozeman,” MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. “Our men’s sprinters and jumpers had a really great meet and at this point in our program, it really shows how far the entire program has come that the team is still breaking records.” In the 60 meter hurdles, senior Austin Lindquist lowered his own MSUB record, dropping his 2014 time of 8.78 with a fourth-best result in the event at 8.76. That performance has Lindquist at third in the GNAC this year. Completing the trio of MSUB records, junior Nels Flanagan placed second in the men’s weight throw with a distance of 52-4.75, displacing his record from last season of 52-2.75. Flanagan is holding the second-best throw in the conference this season. Along with Zook in the 60 meters, sophomore Kaelen Shay placed third (7.18) and freshman Braden Rykal fourth (7.20) as the Yellowjackets placed three in the top-5. In the long jump, Lindquist competed to a second-place finish with a personal best of 21-10.25. Brother Marcus Lindquist finished fifth at a distance of 20-07.00. Freshman Chuck Carr placed third in the high jump for the ‘Jackets at a height of 6-04.75, moving the freshman to third in the GNAC this season. Freshman Isaiah Girard placed sixth in the event at 6-00.75, and is fifth in the conference. Women’s Results Freshman Jamie Orme competed to a fifth-place finish in the women’s high jump at 5-01.00. A native of Helena, Mont., the 5-foot-5 first-year Yellowjacket has the third-best performance right now in the GNAC. The MSUB 4x400 relay team of Jewlz Collins, Janessa Williams, Brenna Beckett, and Josey Smiedala ran a solid time of 4:15.94. Williams finished sixth in the triple jump (34-00.75), just ahead of teammate Shaniah Schwend (33-09.25). In the throws, freshman Hailey Steinbeisser was sixth with a throw of 35-04.00.
