About Yellowjacket Athletics Home of the Yellowjackets, the Montana State University Billings department of intercollegiate athletics supports 15 men’s and women’s varsity sports which compete in the NCAA at the Division II level. MSUB is one of 11 full-time members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, which features 11 championships throughout each academic year. More than 240 student-athletes compete on MSUB’s teams, and members of Yellowjacket teams posted a collective 3.15 grade point average during the 2014-15 academic year. MSUB-sponsored varsity sports include men’s and women’s teams in basketball, cheer/stunt, cross-country, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track & field, as well as baseball, softball, and women’s volleyball. 2014-15 marked a historic year for Yellowjacket Athletics, as MSUB hosted three conference championship events and an NCAA Division II West Region Championship for the first time ever. The ‘Jackets welcomed more than 30 teams to Billings on Nov. 22, 2014 for the NCAA Division II West Region Cross Country Championships at Amend Park, hosted the 2014-15 Men’s and Women’s GNAC Basketball Championships from March 4-7, 2015 at Alterowitz Gym, and capped off the year by hosting the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships from May 7-8 at Dehler Park. MSUB also serves as the host of the largest NCAA Division II softball tournament, the Desert Stinger Classic, which was played for the sixth year in a row from Feb. 12-14, 2015 at Majestic Park in Las Vegas. The 2014-15 year also featured three All-American athletes from MSUB, including senior Kayleen Goggins (women’s basketball), junior Robert Peterson (men’s indoor track & field), and senior Brody Miller (baseball). Miller was also selected as the 2014-15 GNAC Male Athlete of the Year for all sports, just the second baseball player in the conference’s history to win the award, and the second student-athlete from MSUB to collect the honor as he joined women’s basketball star Bobbi Knudsen (2013-14). Capturing GNAC crowns during the 2014-15 year were MSUB’s baseball and softball teams. The Yellowjackets won the 2015 GNAC Softball Championships and advanced all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II West Region Championships in May.

About Yellowjacket Athletics MSUB’s women’s soccer team also competed for a GNAC Championship title, finishing in second place in the conference standings and earning the No. 2 seed into the conference tournament in the fall of 2014. In men’s golf, senior Jake Hedge also represented the ‘Jackets at the NCAA Regional level, competing as an individual in the championships in Monterey Bay, Calif., from May 6-8, 2015. In 2013-14, the MSUB women’s basketball team made history by winning the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season title and advancing to the NCAA Division II west regional championship game. MSUB’s 2013-14 women’s basketball team joined the Yellowjackets’ 1998-99 squad as the only two in program history to advance to the NCAA regional title game. The latter continued on to the Elite Eight, marking the furthest-advancing MSUB team in the school’s history. In 2012, the MSUB softball team won the GNAC regular season title with a 32-18 overall record and earned hosting privileges for the 2013 conference softball tournament. The 2012 Yellowjacket men’s basketball team also earned a conference title, defeating the University of Alaska Anchorage 74-70 in the GNAC tournament championship game. Formerly known as Eastern Montana College, MSUB athletics stem back to the 1927-28 season, the year in which the university was founded. The Yellowjackets have competed in a number of different conferences throughout the years, and prior to the 1980-81 season the athletic department transitioned from the NAIA to competing at the NCAA Division II level. The MSUB Hall of Fame and Distinction inducted its inaugural class in 1990 and serves as a tribute towards influential figures on and off the court, in both current and retired sports.

New Faces: MSUB track and field freshman Josey Smiedala
Published online at www.msubsports.com | Wednesday, January 27, 2016 By: Rio Frame, MSUB Media Relations Intern MSUB SPORTS – Three meets down and two to go in completing freshman Josey Smiedala’s debut indoor season as a Montana State University Billings women’s track runner. When asked about her first collegiate meet, Smiedala seemed very humble about her 61 second time in her open 400, as well as in her 4x400 meter relay later in the meet. “We had our first meet at Black Hills,” said Smiedala. “That went okay, but I was definitely not fully prepared for it. I think I was just kind of nervous racing again.” In her next two meets Smiedala showed up ready to race and improve her times. Her second indoor meet at Montana State University rounded out with a strong showing in her 400 meter dash on her distance medley relay team and a slightly faster time in her open 400 meter dash later in the day (1:00.92, fourth). The freshman runner was not done there though. In her third meet of the season, Smiedala dominated her race, beating her opponent by an easy four seconds. One could say that running is in her genes, as both Smiedala’s mother and father ran in their college years. Coming from a family filled with competitors, Smiedala has been involved in running since she was seven years old, along with her two sisters. Josie seems very fond and proud of her younger siblings, mentioning that one of her sisters had recently signed a letter of intent to compete for the University of Montana track team next year. This young athlete has not only competed in track for numerous years, but tried her hand at basketball, softball, gymnastics, soccer, and tennis, all in which her family supported her fully. After her dad’s diagnosis with cancer, Smiedala filled a more adult role and provided support by cooking, cleaning, and helping take care of her family until his health improved. She had to become more mature for her age, a trait that has stuck with Smiedala her entire life. “You just have to take one day at a time,” she said. “Everything happens for a reason. You need to have a positive outlook on everything.” The beginning of Smiedala’s summer after her senior year didn’t involve flip flops and swimsuits, but rather flying to West Point Military Academy in New York only a couple of weeks after receiving surgery on her knee. She had been battling with this injury almost her entire senior track season at Helena High School, but one fatal hurdle sent Smiedala to the ground and to the hospital. Doctors informed her that surgery was a must if she planned on attending basic in the summer. “I was predicted to win the 300 hurdles at state, so it was the hardest thing in the world,” said Smiedala. But, Smiedala knew that after a year’s worth of writing essays and sitting through interviews to be accepted into West Point, she could not give up now. 2015-16 MSUB Track & Field Media Guide | www.msubsports.com | @MSUBXCTF | #MSUBTF | 7
New Faces: MSUB track and field freshman Josey Smiedala However, she soon realized that maybe this was not her dream. “I don’t think my heart was really in it,” said Smiedala. “I was definitely doing it for other people besides myself. I was burnt out on it and running. That’s why I’m here now.” Smiedala is no stranger to the hustle and bustle of Billings. “I guess I could kind of say I was raised here in a way, because we were up here basically every weekend,” she said. Talking about Billings led Smiedala to recount her call from New York to head coach Dave Coppock informing him of her newfound interest in the school and the track program. Coach Coppock and Smiedala knew about each other through Smiedala’s dad, who Coppock previously ran with in road races. “She seemed really nice, which didn’t surprise me at all, kind of knowing her family,” Coppock said. “I heard a lot of other people tell me that she was a really nice girl and works really hard.” Coppock continued to watch Smiedala as she progressed through high school. “I watched her results and knew that she was doing really well.” Smiedala’s first semester at MSUB studying elementary education was full of trial and error, from learning how to deal with her new home, job, sport, social life, and class load. Her days included waking up to open the school’s Jackets & Co. Campus Store, where she would reside until class time, which turned into practice, dinner, and back to the store. “I would get back to my residence hall at like 9 o’clock and just want to go to sleep,” said Smiedala. “But I think I have more of a hold on it this semester just because I know what to expect.” Smiedala is working on getting her general credits done these first two semesters of her college career. For a runner with personal records of 57 seconds in the 400 meter dash, 2:24 in the 800 meter dash, and 46.2 seconds in the 300 meter hurdles, Smiedala carries herself humbly. She even stated with a laugh, “I didn’t have very good form. I was more the powerhouse of hurdles.” Smiedala always looks to compliment her teammates, and build them up before she celebrates her own accomplishments. When asked about her impact on the team, assistant coach Jonathan Woehl, who works primarily with Smiedala, stated, “It’s been really nice to have her as part of the team because every day she brings a nice, positive attitude. It’s contagious amongst her teammates.” With the two biggest indoor meets of the season looming in the coming weeks, Smiedala is focused on performing well within her relay teams, as well as attaining a sub-60 mark in the 400m. “No matter who we have running the relay, the team has a lot of potential,” Smiedala said. “We just need to be motivated.” While the freshman is less sure about her ability individually, both her father, who sent his encouragement in the form of the provisional national qualifying times in the 400m, and Coach Woehl are confident she has what it takes. “With the work ethic that she has, I can see her scoring at an all-conference level for us in both indoor and outdoor meets,” said Woehl. “I’ve raced so many times, that it is second nature by now,” Smiedala commented. “I always do specific exercises, but I don’t do a lot of miles. I’m totally mental for my warmups. I sometimes try to imagine what I am going to do and my race strategy.” Her teammate and co-worker, Bailey Bomar stated, “She can go from being silly at work, to being serious as soon as she’s at a meet.” Smiedala can be seen encouraging her teammates before, during, and after their events all the way up to the intense 4x400 meter relay at the end of the meet. “She is always up for and wants to run the 4x400,” says Coppock. The freshman tries to remind her teammates that every race they run helps with their training for the rest of the season. “Josie’s strongest asset as an athlete would be her desire to work up to her potential. She really wants to do well, and when you give her a workout, she’s all-in,” stated Coppock. Coppock plans on recruiting athletes to build the track program who have a lot of the same qualities that Smiedala displays. He expects that Smiedala will be one of the fastest, if not the fastest, woman 400 runners to come through the MSUB track program. Both coaches and teammates find Smiedala’s addition to the women’s track team as very positive. Woehl said, “My job is going to be to hold her back, because she is going to want to do way more than she should. That’s a good thing.” His thoughts are probably accurate since Smiedala has stated, “I really think that practice is important to push yourself.” The young runner says that she will attempt to keep up with the men when they are practicing with one another. “The way the track program is, you can be as good as you want to be,” said Smiedala. “I just like all the people here. Practice is so fun and I used to be so stressed out, but I’m just enjoying it, and I think that’s the most important thing.” Smiedala is back to running simply for herself and the pure love of it, as she starts her new journey as a Yellowjacket of MSUB following her philosophy of hard work, dedication, and a bubbly, infectious attitude. 8 | 2015-16 MSUB Track & Field Media Guide | www.msubsports.com | @MSUBXCTF | #MSUBTF
Yellowjacket Athletic Director Krista Montague Krista (Fjelstad) Montague is entering her 13th year of employment at MSU Billings and her third as director of intercollegiate athletics. In 2014-15, MSUB hosted several marquee championship events for the first time ever. In November, MSUB welcomed the 2014 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Region Championships to Billings, which included participation from 32 teams across the region. MSUB also hosted the 2014-15 GNAC Basketball Championships and the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships during the academic year. MSUB’s softball team advanced to the NCAA Division II West Region Championship game after winning the GNAC Championships title, and the Yellowjackets’ baseball team also claimed a conference title during 2014-15. During her first year at the helm of the athletic department, Montague successfully secured hosting responsibilities for the upcoming 2014 NCAA cross country west regional championships and 2014-15 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships. Montague began her employment with MSUB in July of 2002 as the department’s development and marketing director. Shortly after being hired, she was appointed to the position of senior woman administrator, making her the highest-ranking female administrator in the athletic department. When Montana State University Billings announced the hiring of Montague as its new athletic director on May 10, 2013, it became the first NCAA institution in Montana to have a female athletic director. In 2005, the titles of assistant AD and NCAA compliance coordinator were added to her duties, while she still managed the corporate partnership program and special events for the department. In 2009, Montague was promoted to associate AD. As associate AD, her primary responsibilities included overseeing and managing NCAA II compliance for each of the 17 sports and co-ed cheer, as well serving as a crucial member of the athletics administration team and academic liaison between the different campus constituencies and athletics. Montague, a native of Eastern Montana, received her undergraduate degree in business administration with an option in marketing in 1999 from MSU Billings. Montague was a four-year letterwinner for the MSUB women’s basketball team and left the program with the school record for career free-throw percentage. As a senior, Montague helped MSU Billings to the West Region Championship and the program's first and only Elite Eight appearance in women’s basketball. Montague is a member of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) and NACWAA (National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators), as well as various other state and local organizations. In 2011-12, she served on NACWAA’s Legislation & Governance Committee, and also served as a member of the NCAA II Softball West Regional Advisory Committee in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Before joining the MSU Billings athletic staff full time, Montague was the athletic department’s part-time corporate partnership director and held various positions for DD Marketing (Pueblo, Colo.), Norwest Bank, and Billings Clinic. Montague is currently pursuing a master's degree in public relations at MSU Billings. She lives in West Billings with her husband Brent and two daughters Shayla (14) and Allie (12).

Head Coach Dave Coppock Dave Coppock is entering his 27th season as head coach of both Yellowjacket cross-country teams and is entering his seventh as the MSUB track and field head coach since the program returned during the 2008-2009 season. A former cross-country and track runner at the University of Northern Iowa and University of Montana, Coppock has produced 27 all-conference (track & field) and five NCAA all-region runners in cross-country. He has coached 16 NCAA DII National Track & Field Championships provisional qualifiers with two automatic qualifiers and two NCAA appearances. From his track and field teams, he has produced eight champions, including three last season (Peterson, men’s indoor 1500m, Robinson, men’s outdoor 1500m, and Holm, women’s discus). He has also had multiple NCAA DII all-region track performers, including six last season alone (Indoor: Buehler, Campbell, Peterson and Montanez; Outdoor: Holm, Montanez). In distance running, Coppock has coached two former cross-country runners (Sarah Graves and Heidi Reider Schuette) who became U.S. Olympic marathon trials qualifiers. Under Coppock’s guidance in 2014-15, junior Robert Peterson became the first-ever Yellowjacket to earn a spot in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. He also earned USTFCCCA All-American honors after finishing 10th in the mile at the 2015 Indoor Championships. The Yellowjackets also hosted the 2014 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Region Championships at Amend Park in Billings in Nov., 2014. More than 30 teams from across the region competed in the event, which will be held at the same course again during the 2016 season. In 2013-14, under Coach Coppock’s direction, the men’s and women’s track and field teams produced a record number of all-conference and GNAC champions. At the GNAC Indoor Championships, sophomore Robert Peterson ran a meet record in the men’s 1500m to win the conference title. At the GNAC Outdoor Championships, it was senior Chase Robinson who took the men’s 1500 title, with Peterson .37 second behind. Corrie Holm was a conference champion for the women’s track and field team. She won the conference title at the GNAC Outdoor Championships in the women’s discus. In 2006, the Yellowjacket women won the Heartland Conference Championships and four men and women were named to the all-conference teams. The 2006 women were also ranked as high as 10th in the NCAA South Central Region. His teams over the years have placed as high as second in the Pacific West Conference (twice) and fifth in the NCAA West Region. Under Coppock's guidance, the Yellowjackets have also been ranked as high as No. 16 in the nation. In addition to the success Coppock's teams have had on the course, they have also been among the most successful teams in the nation in the classroom. Both the women’s and men’s programs have perennially been named to the NCAA Division II Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic teams and have maintained one of the highest team grade point averages in the nation. A 1979 graduate of Montana with a degree in geology, Coppock still runs competitively. He was named the 2006 Heartland Conference Women’s Coach of the Year and has been named the Montana USATF Road Racer of the Year two times.

Assistant Coaches Jonathan Woehl, Anica Knispel, and Mark Bolt Jonathan Woehl joins the Montana State University Billings staff after spending a year as the Southwest Minnesota State University assistant cross country and track and field coach. Prior to that, Woehl was the program’s graduate assistant for two years while earning his master’s degree in business administration and marketing. Originally from Ankeny, Iowa, Woehl attended Northwest College in Orange City, Iowa, where he was a 4-year letter winner in track and cross country. He is the school record holder in the half marathon for the Red Raiders, completing his undergraduate in 2008 with a double major in mathematics and art. Woehl was a national qualifier in the NAIA marathon in 2008, and was a leader on the team as the designated captain his senior season. During his time as a graduate assistant, Woehl oversaw the recruiting efforts of the coaching staff. During his stint at SMSU, Woehl coached the distance runners and horizontal jumpers. Anica Knispel is in her first year as an assistant coach for MSUB’s track and field team, and will work primarily with the Yellowjackets’ throwers. Knispel competed for the Yellowjackets through the 2012 season, and posted winning marks in the shot put in three meets in 2011. Knispel won the GNAC title with a conference-record throw of 14.04 meters, and had a season-best discus throw of 38.75 meters at the NNU Invite in April of 2011. Knispel was a USTFCCCA all-west region honoree in shot put. Knispel is a 2010 graduate of Skyview High School in Billings, where she was an all-state selection her final two seasons for the Falcons. MSUB alumnus Mark Bolt begins his first season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Yellowjackets’ cross country and track and field programs. Bolt was an all-state runner in high school at Billings Skyview and ran two years of cross country and track at the University of Montana. Bolt ultimately transferred to MSUB where he completed his degree and competed in two seasons of cross country and one season of track. Bolt continues to run competitively and recently ran a half marathon in a personal record time of 1:15:23 in 2014. Bolt spent the last 10 years coaching cross country and track at Billings Skyview. He coached numerous all-state runners as well as city champions, divisional champions, two state champions, and several school record holders. In the eight years prior to his arrival at Skyview, there had only been one boy and one girl all-state runner in cross country, and no state placers in track for the distance events. In his first season at Skyview, Bolt coached two boys and one girl to all-state honors. All three of them went on to place at the state track meet that following spring. Bolt helped Skyview’s men’s cross country team finish in third place at the state meet in the same year. In the 10 years prior to that they had not finished higher than eighth.

"This will be a good chance for the coaches to evaluate our new freshmen and transfers as well as try out some people in events they don't normally do," MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. "Our goal in these early meets is just to get an idea of where our strengths and weaknesses lie in order to plan out the rest of the indoor season. The challenge will be the long, 5-week period over the holidays until we face our next competition at Montana State on January 15. I'm hopeful that the Black Hills meet will serve as motivation for everyone to work hard over the break." MSU Billings welcomes back senior Brielle Davis and junior Rio Frame who are coming off team-leading cross country season performances. Added to that, sophomore Brianna Gray who as a freshman set the MSUB record in the 60 meters (7.97) and the 200 meters (25.81) is returning for her second season with the Yellowjackets. "Rio and Brielle will be looking for good performances in the middle distances after year coming off strong cross country seasons," Coppock commented. "Brianna, will be returning and looks to be in really good shape after the fall conditioning. She was a GNAC placer, scoring in both the 60 and 200 meters last season." “In the regular season meets leading up to the conference championships we want to show steady improvement each time out and establish some good marks and momentum as we head into the final meet,” Coppock said. “Our goal at the GNAC Championships is to place in scoring positions (places 1-8) in as many events as we can and hopefully come away with some all-conference or winning performances. Beyond that, we’d like to get at least one NCAA Nationals qualifier and hope for a few provisional marks, at least. We normally have three or four provisional National qualifiers each season.”

Yellowjacket Women’s Track & Field Season Preview Also competing for MSUB this season, sophomore Amanda Nichols will return in the pole vault where she placed fourth in last year's conference indoor championships. The Yellowjackets have added several key newcomers to their roster. Senior transfer Della Lyle will be competing in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. A native of Buffalo, Wyo., Lyle competed for the University of Redlands in California where she won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference cross country championships title in 2014 with a time of 23:40.8, propelling her to being named the SCIAC Cross Country Athlete of the Year. Two freshmen Coach Coppock is looking to add points for the Yellowjackets are Josey Smiedala in the 400 meters and Janessa Williams in the long jump, 60 meter hurdles and 200 meters. There will not be live statistics available for Saturday's meet. Results and the meet recap will be available at msubsports.com following the conclusion of the event. Teams expected to compete are host Black Hills State, South Dakota School of Mines, Chadron State, Gillette College, and Rocky Mountain College. Yellowjacket Men’s Track & Field Season Preview
Published online at www.msubsports.com | Dec. 5, 2015 BILLINGS, Mont. - The MSUB men's indoor track and field team opens their season this weekend at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open in Spearfish, S.D., on Saturday, Dec. 5. MSU Billings begins its track and field season with an indoor meet hosted by Black Hills State University. The fellow Yellow Jackets are welcoming South Dakota School of Mines, Chadron State, Gillette College, and Rocky Mountain College along with MSU Billings to its campus for the start of the 2015-16 track and field season. MSUB has attended the early meet since its inception, and head coach Dave Coppock sees it as a good opportunity to evaluate where the team is at and to use the competition for motivation over the holiday season. "We have five very competitive meets scheduled for the indoor season," Coppock said. "This opening meet is always a good starter for us to cap off the preseason conditioning we've been doing this fall and everyone is ready to get started." "The meet is fairly low-key and everyone there is just trying to get back in the competitive mode," Coppock continued. "There will be four NCAA DII schools competing out of the RMAC, so that will be a good challenge. We'll have about 30 athletes entered in most of the events. We have a few key people that aren't able to make the trip this weekend due to a number of things like interviews, lab finals or just needing a little more recovery coming cross the cross country season." Leading the returning members of the team is senior Robert Peterson. The Billings, Mont., native and Skyview High School graduate finished the 2014-15 indoor season as an All-American in the men's mile. Peterson is the MSUB record holder in the mile at 4:10.76 (2014) and the 3,000 meters at 8:28.68 (2015).

"Robert Peterson will be shooting for an NCAA qualifying mark in either the mile or 3,000 meters," Coppock said. "He had a strong cross country season and just missed Nationals by one spot, so he's pretty motivated to get a championship berth this indoor season. He gained a lot of good experience at indoor Nationals last season, so that will help him focus on getting there again this year." Also returning this season is MSUB record holder Nate Vanderby. The junior holds the fastest time in the 400 meters in 50.84. Senior Austin Lindquist tied the MSUB record last season in the 60 meter hurdles at 8.78. Peterson and Vanderby were members of the distance medley relay that raced to a 10:16.86 MSUB record-setting performance in 2014. At the GNAC indoor championships last year, the team of Jorey Egeland, Landon Polkow, Mark Hovland, and Liam McKay earned all-conference honors with a third place result. Coach Coppock looks for the relay team to improve on their time from last season "Our distance medley relay, which placed third, making all-conference at the GNAC indoor last year as an all-freshman team is returning. I'm also looking at Josh Panasuk to have some strong performances in the mile and 3,000 meters. He redshirted the cross country season and was able to really work on his endurance over the fall." Panasuk is a senior this year, redshirting the cross country season, but will compete on the track for the Yellowjackets. The native of Butte, Mont., should have fresh legs after the fall season as he returns to competition at the meet in Spearfish. In the field events, junior Nels Flanagan will compete in the throws for MSUB. He placed at both the GNAC indoor and outdoor championships and should be a factor again this year. There will not be live statistics available for Saturday's meet. Results and the meet recap will be available at msubsports.com following the conclusion of the event Yellow Jacket Holiday Classic December 4-5, 2015 Friday 4:00pm - Women's Pentathlon 4:30pm - Men's Heptathlon Saturday 9:30am - Men's Heptathlon (60m Hurdles, pole vault, 1000m) Field Events: 1:00pm Weight throw (M, W); Shot Put to follow (M, W) 1:30pm Long Jump (M, W); Triple Jump to follow (M, W) High Jump (W, M) Pole Vault (W, M) Running Events: (Men followed by Women) 2:30pm Mile 60m Hurdle Prelim (if more than 8) 60m Dash Prelim (if more than 8) 400m Dash 60m Hurdle Final 60m Dash Final 800m Run 200m Dash 3000m Run 4x00m Relay 16 | 2015-16 MSUB Track & Field Media Guide | www.msubsports.com | @MSUBXCTF | #MSUBTF

2014-15 Men’s Track & Field Season Review
Published online at www.msubsports.com | May 21, 2015 BILLINGS, Mont. – Seven school records broken and junior Robert Peterson competing at the NCAA Division II indoor national meet were some of the highlights of the 2014-15 MSUB men's track and field seasons. Peterson earned a berth in the indoor championships with a qualifying time at the Montana State Open on Jan. 16, in 4:07.50 (adjusted for track and altitude). At the national meet, he ran a 4:11.29 which was seventh overall in the preliminaries, but finished 10th on the track with how the qualifying system is calculated in the race. Peterson qualified for both the mile and 3,000m, but decided to focus on the mile at the national meet. He did finish ranked first in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in both events with a 4:16.18 in the mile turned in during the Montana State Open on Jan. 16 and a time of 8:26.68 at the Myrle Hanson Open on Jan. 10. Peterson's time at the MSU Open was the second fastest time in GNAC history at 4:07.50 (adjusted for track and altitude), earning the junior his third GNAC Athlete of the Week nod this year. In the indoor season, Peterson also turned in the second fastest time in GNAC history in the 3,00m completing the race in 8:15.52 (adjusted for track and altitude). During the GNAC Indoor Championships Peterson finished second in the mile, completing the race in 4:11.02. MSUB head coach Dave Coppock was pleased to see Peterson qualify for the national meet. During the cross country season this year, Peterson was the first Yellowjacket to also qualify for the NCAA Division II national race. "Robert was our first-ever national indoor qualifier, so it was a great experience for us and really sets a new standard of expectations for how we go forward with the program," Coppock aid. "He had a little bad luck going into the national meet with an injury, but he came away okay, adding a second team All-American award on top of everything. The injury sidelined him most of the outdoor season and he was barely able to qualify for the GNAC championships in the 1500 meters. But on race day, he really came through and finished third, making all-conference while running out of the slow heat which was quite an accomplishment." In the outdoor season, Peterson had to take some time coming back after working with an injury he picked up during the end of the indoor season. After barely qualifying for the 1500m at the conference outdoor championships, Peterson finished with a third place finish and a MSUB record during the final meet of the season for the Yellowjackets. He completed the 1500m in 3:51.58 breaking the school record and finishing with an all-conference result.

2014-15 Men’s Track & Field Season Review Two school records were set at the last regular season indoor meet. After being just shy of breaking the records in each event earlier in the season, freshmen Sam Zook in the 60m dash and Lonnie Sherman in the pole vault had break through days at the Birds and Bees Invite in Gillette, Wyo. Zook came away with a MSUB school record finishing the 60m dash in 7:05. Sherman completed a height of 4.38m breaking the record of 4.31m set by Brandon Martinez in 2013. At the GNAC Indoor Championships in Nampa, Idaho, it was the distance relay team of Landon Polkow, Liam McKay, Jorey Egeland, and Mark Hovland that tallied points for the Yellowjackets first. The team completed the relay in 10:24.32 for a third place and all-conference finish. Adding to the MSUB score was the 4x400 relay team of Polkow, Cameron Stanek, Hovland, and Preston Schubert. The team placed seventh in 3:29.71. Also at the conference championships, Schubert broke the school record in the heptathlon completing the seven events for a total of 4,236 points, breaking the MSUB record set in 2014 by teammate Stanek of 3,969 who finished just behind Schubert at the championships with 3,757 points. The Yellowjackets finished the indoor championships with 23 total team points. "We have a very young team and I think the indoor season really enabled them to step up to the competitiveness of intercollegiate track and field," Coppock said on the Yellowjacket squad. "The freshman and sophomores really came through this year and that carried over throughout the outdoor season." During the outdoor season three MSU Billings records were broken. The team finished with 17 points at the GNAC outdoor championships. Two sophomores who made progress this season were Nate Vanderby and Nels Flanagan. Vanderby in the sprints and Flanagan in the throws moved from being ranked in the double digits during the indoor season to competing and winning points for the Yellowjackets during the conference outdoor championships in May. Flanagan qualified in the discus and hammer throw for MSUB. At the GNAC Outdoor Champion2014-15 Sophomore Nate Vanderby. ships, Flanagan placed eighth in both events adding points to the overall Yellowjacket team score. Vanderby had a standout season in the 400m. The sprinter from Manhattan, Mont., crept closer to the MSUB record and ended up breaking the record twice during the year. Vanderby turned in a 49.12 performance to set the record and was seventh at the outdoor championships in 49.30. Coach Coppock is looking forward to Vanderby's continued career as a Yellowjacket. "Nate Vanderby has really established himself as a legitimate college 400 meter specialist," Coppock said. "He's still just a sophomore and he's definitely going to be a contender for a conference championship in the coming years."

2014-15 Men’s Track & Field Season Review Vanderby was also on the men's 4x400m relay team that turned in a sixth place finish at the conference championships. The team consisting of Vanderby, Tyler Delaney, Stanek, and Peterson ran a 3:21.60 in Monmouth, Ore., breaking the school record of 3:23.46 set in 2011. "I can't say enough about how well the relay teams performed this season," Coppock said. "Although the men's 4x100 relay didn't break our school mark, they were consistently close to that time all season. They really came through in the 4x400 relay at the conference meet as well. The team made a tremendous amount of improvement between indoor and outdoor in the long relay. The 400 meter runners worked very hard over the early spring months and made steady improvement over the entire season." A first-year performer for the 'Jackets, Dominique Holt a transfer from Carroll College, turned in some good results his inaugural season with MSUB. Holt was an automatic conference qualifier in the high jump and was the only athlete to finish the multi-events at the GNAC outdoor competition. Holt was one of three athletes from MSUB that ended the year ranked in the top-25 in the pole vault in the conference. Sherman finished 12th, Schubert 17th, and Holt was 23rd. Pulling through with some big improvements, junior Josh Panasuk finished eighth at the GNAC Outdoor Championships in 9:39.15. Panasuk continued to drop his time in several events, and also hit a conference provisional mark in the 5,00m before the championships. Overall Coach Coppock is pleased to see some standout performances from the student-athletes, and sees a good foundation to build on for the future. "We don't lose anyone to graduation for next season," Coppock said. "So we have a great core of experienced athletes returning for the 2015-16 season. Our underclassmen made a lot of progress this year and are setting up for a great year ahead." "I would characterize the year for the men's team as one of making steady improvement and gaining experience throughout the season," Coppock continued. "They peaked at the right time for the conference championships both indoors and outdoors. We all have a lot to look forward to next year." 2014-15 Women’s Track & Field Season Review
Published online at www.msubsports.com | May 21, 2015 BILLINGS, Mont. – The MSU Billings women's and track and field team broke eight school records and tied one during the indoor and outdoor seasons for the Yellowjackets this year. The records for MSUB were freshmen and senior heavy as six of the seven individual records were set by either a first or four-year participant at MSU Billings. "Despite having a relatively small group to work with this year, the women's team made great improvement in every area," MSUB head coach Dave Coppock commented on the 2014-15 women's track and field team. "By the time the GNAC Outdoor Championships had rolled around, the team had broken several records and recorded a number of personal bests." Right out of the gate in her first collegiate meet, freshman Brianna Gray broke the MSUB women's indoor record in the 60m dash with a 7.97 performance. The sprinter from Park City, Mont., continued to improve on her times, eventually breaking the 60m time again and setting the record in the 200m with a time of 25.81. Joining Gray in the record books during the indoor season were senior Nocona Frame in the mile, sophomore Hope Reid in the 60m hurdles, and a combination of Nocona Frame, Ashlynn VanVoast, Brielle Davis, and Rio Frame in the distance medley relay. Four of the five MSUB indoor records were broken at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championships held in Nampa, Idaho. Gray set both her records at the GNAC championships during the preliminaries on Day 1 of the meet. Likewise the MSUB distance medley relay team broke the record in Nampa, Idaho on Day 1, placing sixth in the event during the championships. Nocona Frame was seventh during the championships setting the school record in the mile. During the outdoor season, Frame placed sixth at the conference championships in Monmouth, Ore. The transfer from the University of Mary is also the MSUB record holder in the women's 1500m with a time of 4:35.75 which she set last season. Frame finishes her career as a Yellowjacket with her name on three records: the mile, 1500m, and on the indoor DMR team.

At the conference indoor championships, MSUB combined for 14 total team points. During the outdoor season, the 'Jackets broke three more school records and tied one. In the women's discus three MSUB student-athletes are among the top-10 throwers of all time in the GNAC. Leeza Henry (2012) holds the MSU Billings record and has the sixth best throw in conference history at 66.63m. Right behind her is senior Corrie Holm who threw for a distance of 44.00m this season at the Al Manual Open hosted by the University of Montana. Following Holm on the list with the eighth-best throw in GNAC history is Lexi Halvorson (2009) at 43.51m. Holm finished sixth this season at the conference outdoor championships. She earned all-west region honors from the United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and received her third consecutive academic all-conference honor and her second consecutive USTFCCCA academic all-region nod. Holm was named the GNAC Field Athlete of the Week after the meet in Missoula. She was the 2014 conference champion in the discus and has been a consistent performer for the Yellowjackets throughout her four-year career at MSU Billings.
2014-15 Senior Corrie Holm. "Corrie has had a great career at MSU Billings and accomplished a lot both athletically and academically, excelling in both areas," Coach Coppock said on his senior thrower. "Corrie is one of those student-athletes who put the most effort into and got the most out of the college experience as anyone could. I'm really going to miss the personality, leadership and dedication she brought to our program." Reid continues to make her mark on the Yellowjacket books. She is now the MSUB record holder in the indoor 60m hurdles and the outdoor 100m hurdles. Reid is also part of the 400m outdoor relay (Blair Street, Gray, Kaytlin Halle, and Reid) that broke the record at the Second Annual Yellowjacket Battlin' Bears Open. Besides school records being broken this year, this season marked the second time MSUB and Rocky Mountain College have teamed up to host a home track meet at the Laurel Sports Complex in Laurel, Mont. At the meet for the MSU Billings women's team, two records were broken as the Yellowjackets won eight events at their home meet. Gray won the women's 100m and 200m dash, Brielle Davis won the title in the 800m, and Nocona Frame won the women's 1500m. In the relays, the 'Jackets were first in the 4x100 and 4x400 meters. Freshman Amanda Nichols tied for first place in the pole vault with a height of 3.25m.

Nichols, a freshman from Billings, Mont., finished fourth at the GNAC Indoor Championships in the pole vault, and tied the school record in the outdoor season at 3.40m. "After struggling with some injuries her freshman year, Hope really came back strong this season and was making some big contributions in her events," Coppock said on the sophomore from Thompson Falls, Mont. "She's just such a good, all-around athlete and helped us in the hurdles, jumps and short relay." Continuing on with the younger athletes in the group, Coach Coppock is excited to see how well this year has prepared the 'Jackets for the next few years in the GNAC. "Amanda lived up to expectations in the pole vault this year coming away with a fourth place indoor finish at the conference meet," Coppock said. "I think now that she's got this freshman year under her belt, she'll really start to take off as a collegiate athlete. Brianna Gray had a great start to her career as well, coming away with school records in the 60, 200 and 4x100 meter relay. Hope, Amanda and Brianna will form a strong returning core group next year in the sprints, jumps and hurdles." Rounding out the school records this season was senior Melanie Bock who competed in the 3,000m steeplechase at the GNAC outdoor championships. She finished 11th in her event in a time of 11:59.81. At the final meet this season for MSUB, the Yellowjackets combined for 17 total points. Finishing up their careers with MSUB this season are multi-award winners Holm, Bock, and Nocona Frame. On his transfer student-athlete Coach Coppock was really happy to see such a great finish to her collegiate career. "Nocona really came through at championship time again. She's always managed to perform well at that final meet," Coppock said. "She had struggled a bit during the outdoor season with illness and we had to enter her in the championships with a wildcard, which allowed her in without a qualifying mark. She came away with a great performance and a sixth place finish, so she really ended her career on a high note." "Overall, I was happy with the seasons from two perspectives; one, that the underclassmen showed steady improvement and performed well for the championships, and two that the graduating seniors went out with great performances at the outdoor championships," Coppock said. "Everybody stepped up at the right time."
