Part 5 of MSUB’s women’s basketball blog detailing the trip to Barcelona, Spain, features junior Grace Weeks and sophomore Brina Hull. May 21, 2017 | By: Brina Hull & Grace Weeks BARCELONA – During our trip to Spain, Grace and I really enjoyed all the events that were held on Sunday, May 21, such as a Cava Tour, the Sagrata Familia, and a FC Barcelona soccer match. The Cava tour was really cool, we got to tour the ‘winery’ and hear the history of the Cava Freixnet. They explained how their wine is named Cava because the Spanish did not want them to call it champagne. We got to take a tour around seeing where they make the wine and where they store the old wine bottles. After the tour, we got to taste their sparkling, Cava wine - which personally I did not like but it was fun to experience a Cava tour in a different country (considering I have never been on one before).

Visiting the Sagrata Familia is definitely a sight worth seeing whenever in Barcelona. The Sagrata Familia is a beautiful Roman Catholic Church build for the people by the people. We learned many interesting facts about this temple, for instance, the building was first constructed in 1882 and was designed and led by Antonio Gaudi until his sudden death only partway through the construction. Because of this, the finished product is now being interpreted by the people as what Gaudi was planning. The outside was up for opinions. Some may have found the building to be beautiful, others not so much. However the inside was definitely gorgeous. Surrounding the walls were huge stained glass murals that had many different colors. The architecture inside was so unique, we never would have thought it looked so clean by the looks of the many textures on the outside. The soccer game was very exciting to go see. To be a part of the atmosphere at a professional soccer match was amazing to experience. To just be a part of it was a once in a lifetime experience for a lot of us, considering this was the first pro game most of us have been to. Getting Messi shirts and just being able to cheer them on during their last home game was incredible. Even when the crowd was chanting and we had no idea what they were saying (none of us knew Spanish), we would still try to join in and support the home team. The game itself was very slow to start, two goals were made by the opposing team. Then when the second half rolled around, the first home goal was scored by the opposing team, which brought the score to 2-1. Then the home team really picked it up and ended up scoring three more goals to the opposing two goals. One of the goals was a penalty kick by Messi, so the final score was 4-2.
