Shooting a team score of 336 on Friday, MSUB’s women’s golf team is in sixth place after the opening round of the Saint Martin’s Invitational. OLYMPIA, Wash. – Shooting a team score of 336 in the opening round of the Saint Martin’s University Invitational on Friday, the Montana State University Billings women’s golf team is in sixth place with one round left to play at the Olympia Golf and Country Club. Junior Bailee Dexter led the Yellowjackets with an 80 in her first round, and is currently in a tie for sixth place. Dexter is coming off of a second-place finish earlier this week at the Rocky Mountain College Invitational in Billings. Sophomores Kortney McNeil and Shealyn Hafer each shot an 82 their first time through the course, and sit in a tie for 13th place. Completing the field of five golfers for the ‘Jackets were junior Sammy Walter and senior Haley Shackelford, who are in a tie for 45th place after each shooting a 92 on Friday. A pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams are tied for the lead after Day 1, as Simon Fraser University and Concordia University each posted rounds of 323. Concordia’s McKenzi Stan was the top individual with a round of 77, and holds a one-stroke lead over Simon Fraser’s Erin Farner and Saint Martin’s University’s Chloe Read.
Saturday’s final round will begin at 10:30 a.m. Mountain time. McNeil was selected as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day for the ‘Jackets. “The Yellowjacket women saw that the course here does not play easy,” commented MSUB assistant coach Rhett Hightower with reference to the tournament leader shooting a score of 77. “We are in a good position to place and will come out ready tomorrow to make every effort to capture first.” Saint Martin’s University Invitational Olympia Golf & Country Club | Olympia, WA First Round Results | October 7, 2016 Team – T1.
