Inclement weather cuts the SMU Invite short on Saturday, as MSUB’s women’s golf team finishes the event with nine holes at Olympia Golf & Country Club. OLYMPIA, Wash. – Halting play at the mercy of inclement weather on Saturday, the Montana State University Billings women’s golf team finished the Saint Martin’s University Invitational with nine holes at Olympia Golf and Country Club. The Yellowjackets maintained their spot in sixth place, shooting a collective score of 166 over the last nine holes of the event. “The women played all day in the rain and fought hard,” said MSUB assistant coach Rhett Hightower. “The course was set up as difficult as I have seen in my six years of coaching. We are all excited for the next tournament in Bellingham and are hoping for more suitable weather.” Shealyn Hafer and Haley Shackelford each put together a score of 40 on Saturday, with Hafer finishing overall in a tie for ninth place at the event. Shackelford wound up in a tie for 39th place, after a first-round score of 92 on Friday. Sophomore Kortney McNeil was close behind with a 41 on Saturday, and finished the 27 holes with a score of 123 after an 82 on Friday. Bailee Dexter notched a 43 in her final nine holes on Saturday, and tied for 12th place with McNeil.
Junior Sammy Walter completed the group for MSUB, finishing in 48th place after a 48 on Saturday and a 92 the day before. Simon Fraser University won the abbreviated team title, following a round of 323 on Friday with a 156 on Saturday. The Clan held off second-place Saint Martin’s University and Concordia University by 10 strokes. Winning the tournament individually was the University of British Columbia’s Kat Kennedy, who carded a 35 on Saturday after posting a mark of 79 on Friday for a 27-hole total of 114. Hafer was picked as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day for the ‘Jackets. NEXT UP: MSUB remains in Washington for the Western Washington University Invitational, which kicks off on Monday at Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
