MSUB’s offense is limited to six shots in the match, while Central Washington scores three times on its 19 shots in the Yellowjackets’ first loss of the conference season. ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Limiting the Montana State University Billings women’s soccer team to just six shots on Saturday, host Central Washington University used goals from three different players to post a 3-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference win at the CWU Soccer Field. The defeat was the first in the conference season for MSUB, which fell to 2-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league play with the loss. The Wildcats improved to 8-2 on the year and jumped ahead of MSUB in the conference standings at 3-1. “I’m proud of how we played today, and it was a tough physical game,” said MSUB head coach Wojtek Krakowiak. “The team played hard with a lot of heart, and we created some decent chances. We just have to put chances away when we get them.” Whitney Lowe, Lexsi Manning, and Bailey Martoncik each scored for the Wildcats, who built on a 1-0 halftime lead with two more goals in the second period. Goalkeeper Emily Holt made a pair of saves to earn the shutout, while CWU kept on the offensive with 19 shots and nine on target in the match.

The ’Cats used a goal just before halftime to swipe momentum, as Allie Bohnett delivered a cross into the box from the right corner. Manning lifted a shot over MSUB goalkeeper Lili Delgadillo, making the score 1-0 in favor of the host. One of Delgadillo’s six saves on the day came just before the halftime break, as she deflected a shot by Kaysha Darcy over the crossbar to prevent the ‘Cats from doubling their lead. MSUB came out of the halftime break pushing forward offensively, as a shot missed wide by Claire Tevaseu was the ultimate result of movement into the attacking third. Alycia Wright missed with a shot in the 61st minute, and the ‘Jackets won a corner kick on the deflection. Both of Jessica Spang’s shots in the game came within two minutes of one another, as her first missed wide in the 66th minute and she had another blocked at the top of the box in the 68th. The ‘Cats doubled their lead shortly thereafter, as Martoncik got her foot on a loose ball in the box and tucked home her first goal of the year. Making Delgadillo work for two more saves in the 81st minute, it was after a rebound that CWU scored its third and final goal of the match. Lowe was left unguarded inside the box, and pushed across a deflected shot into an open net from around 10 yards away.

Freshman Claire Tevaseu played all 90 minutes for the ‘Jackets in Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Central Washington.

Alexa Iacolucci had MSUB’s first shot on goal of the game in the 81st minute, but Holt handled her left-footed strike from the left side of the box. The ‘Jackets won a last-minute free kick towards the end of regulation, but Dana Lubieniecki’s shot on frame was also held by Holt as she kept the clean sheet.

The Wildcats kept constant pressure on MSUB’s back line throughout the game, winning five corner kicks and conceding just one defensively. The Yellowjackets’ back four of Kari Kastelic, Amanda Hemmen, Kalin Sandow, and Courteney Shovlin once again played the full 90 minutes, as did Tevaseu and Lubieniecki in the midfield. “Claire was amazing, and she’s playing with so much confidence,” Krakowiak said, singling out the performance of the true freshman. “She is calm on the ball, wins a lot of tackles, and was playing some awesome through balls today. She was all over the field, and it is awesome to see her play that way. She’s an extremely intelligent player and that is now showing on the field.” THE BUZZ: Tevaseu was picked as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game…the loss snapped a three-game winning streak for MSUB against CWU…the Wildcats now lead the all-time series 12-11-1. HOME AWAY FROM HOME: With seven of the players on MSUB’s roster hailing from Washington, plenty of Yellowjacket supporters were in the crowd for Saturday’s game in Ellensburg. NEXT UP: The Yellowjackets complete their four-game road trip next week, with matches at Western Washington University and Simon Fraser University. MSUB takes on the Vikings on Thursday at 8 p.m. Mountain time in Bellingham,
