Senior Brielle Davis finishes first for the MSU Billings women’s cross country team at the MSU Invite

Brielle Davis turns in the top result for the MSUB women’s cross country team at the Montana State University / Bozeman Running Company Invitational. BOZEMAN, Mont. – After a week off from competition, the MSU Billings women’s cross country team competed at the Montana State University / Bozeman Running Company Invitational held at the Bridger Creek Golf Course in Bozeman, Mont., Saturday. The Yellowjackets were up against competitors from schools including: Division I Utah, Utah State, Idaho State, Montana State, and Montana. Also in attendance were individuals from NAIA Carroll College, Montana Western, Montana State Northern, and Rocky Mountain College. MSUB was the lone NCAA Division II institution competing at the MSU-hosted event.

Makena Morley from Montana won the women’s race finishing the 3-mile distance in 16:43.87. Utah won the team event placing runners in the 4-6-7-8-10 spots for a team score of 35. The Utes edged-out Utah State by six points for the team title as the Aggies finished with 41 points. Montana State was third with 80 points. Montana placed fourth with 120 points, just 1-point above Carroll College who was fifth with 121 points. MSU Billings placed seventh with 233 points behind sixth place Idaho State who checked-in with 131 points. Montana Western was eighth (254) and Montana State Northern finished ninth (272). Brielle Davis turned in the top-time for the ‘Jackets, completing the 3-mile course in 19:20.16 for an overall 59th place finish. MSUB’s top-5 placed 59-67-77-82-90 overall at the line. Davis was named today’s St. Vincent Healthcare Athlete of the Meet. Taylor Condon was second for the team in 19:41.25. Moving up for MSUB this week and finishing in the third spot was senior Jinise Trueblood who completed the race in 20:07.61. Sophomore Bailey Bomar crossed the tape in 20:38.53 while freshman Devin McDonald made her collegiate debut as a Yellowjacket with a fifth-place team result, finishing the race in 22:18.26. Overall MSUB head coach Dave Coppock was pleased with the team’s performance. “Our top-runner Rio Frame unfortunately is dealing with an injury this week and had to drop out of the race today. Jinise Trueblood moved up really well, so that is exciting for her and the team. Some of our freshmen are getting used to competing at a collegiate level and so are a little tired, but we will have a good week of training coming up for the Griak. I think we want to feel a little more rested for that. Overall, most everyone had a good race.” Davis ran with Frame until the latter runner had to halt her race. “My goal today was to stay with Rio as much as I could the entire race,” Davis said. “I was able to do that until Rio had to drop out. Overall I think it was a pretty good meet. It was a good test-run for us leading up to the Griak next week. I felt like it was pretty fast race for the most part. There was some really good competition, so it was good runners to go up against.” “I think we did really good work on our positioning,” Davis continued. “Overall I think most of our team was tired, but it was a good first meet for some of our runners and I don’t think we could have asked for a better race. It’s good to see where everyone is at during the first meet and how we might all work together for the Griak. I know that was one of our goals during the race today, so I think that we accomplished that.” Next Up: MSU Billings travels to St. Paul, Minn., next week for the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. The Griak is the largest event MSUB will compete at this season. The women’s team will race in the Division II competition, a 6K run on the Les Bolstad Golf Course against more than 35 NCAA D2 teams and 300 individual entrants from around the region. --@MSUBSports | #JacketNation--
