BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings women’s cross country team will compete on a course at the Buffalo Ranch at a meet hosted by the University of Colorado on Saturday, Oct. 1. Last week the Yellowjackets competed on their home course at Amend Park during the Yellowjacket invitational and NCAA Division II west region preview meet. MSU Billings placed fifth out of six teams at the 6K distance. The top-3 placers for MSU Billings crossed the finish line in a tight pack. Freshman Nikki Aiken led the ‘Jacket effort, finishing 14th in 24:49.03. A step behind was Rio Frame in 15th at 24:56.85 and junior Bailey Bomar covered the course in 25:15.93 for 18th place overall.
Behind the trio was freshman Lydia Foster. Like Bomar, Foster has been steadily moving up during the first half of the season, closing the gap between the top-2 finishers. The native of Gillette, Wyo., was 23rd over the distance in 25:33.82. A pack of freshmen have been working together this year in making the transition to collegiate competition. Moving into the fifth spot for MSU Billings this season is first-time competitor Catrina Schuchard. A native of Harlowton, Mont., Schuchard had not run cross country competitively before joining the MSUB cross country program, but has been a force for the team, placing in the top-5 for the Yellowjackets in the last three events. Working with Schuchard are fellow freshmen Krysten Mossburg and Ella McKenzie. Junior Kelby Wegner competed for MSUB for the first time last week and Sarah Beatty was also part of the Yellowjacket squad finishing the course at Amend Park. This week’s race in Boulder, Colo., will feature top competition spanning all collegiate divisions. Several NCAA Division II schools will be attendance on the cross country course at the Buffalo Ranch, and the Yellowjackets will have a chance to match-up with several regional teams. The women will run a 5.8K distance beginning at 9:45 a.m. Olympic Bronze Medalists Emma Coburn and Jenny Simpson, former members of the CU cross country and track & field teams, will serve as honorary starters for the races. Coburn medaled in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and set the American record in the process, while Simpson medaled in the 1,500 at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
