The MSU Billings women’s cross country squad is hosting the 27th Annual Yellowjacket Invitational and west region preview meet at Amend Park on Friday. BILLINGS, Mont. – The 2016 Yellowjacket women’s cross country team is hosting the 27th Annual Yellowjacket Invitational and NCAA Division II West Region Preview Meet on Friday, Sept. 23, at Amend Park. The women’s 6K race begins at 11 a.m., with the men’s event preceding at 10 a.m. The meet on Friday will serve as the NCAA preview event as Montana State University Billings is hosting the west region championships on Nov. 5. MSUB hosted the 2014 west region championships, so this year’s course at Amend Park will be familiar to two runners on the team, but a new challenge for the underclassmen who have yet to compete at a regional event in Billings. Expected at the event on Friday are Division II competitors San Francisco State, South Dakota School of Mines, and Northwest Nazarene. This will be the first time MSUB has seen a Great Northwest Athletic Conference team this year
and the Crusaders are driving over from Idaho for the west region tune-up. Also in in attendance on the Amend Park course will be teams from Montana State Northern, Gillette College, and Central Wyoming. “For the women, Rio and Nikki continue to lead the team,” MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. “Bailey and Lydia have looked very good lately as well. We’re still looking for that fifth runner amongst a large group of freshmen and sophomores. Catrina has been improving each week and moved into the fifth spot at MSU last week, so we’ll see how she does at the 6K distance this week” Junior Rio Frame was the team’s top finisher at the Montana State Invitational in Bozeman last week. The native of Glendive, Mont., covered the 3-mile course in 19:23.01. Behind her, freshman Nikki Aiken also finished in under 20 minutes with a final time of 19:41.59. Lydia Foster (20:05.16) and Bailey Bomar (20:08.72) were close behind at the meet contested at the Bridger Creek Golf Course. Freshman Catrina Schuchard was MSUB’s fifth runner last week. One place in back of Schuchard was sophomore Sarah Beatty. Fellow underclassmen Ella McKenzie and Krysten Mossburg completed the results for the Yellowjackets.
