Associated Schools of Construction, Region 4 Student Competition

Nebraska City, NE

If you are an alumni of our program, you likely remember the ASC student competition in Nebraska. This year we took two teams: Heavy-Highway and Commercial. Our Heavy-Highway team took home the championship, earning 1st place! Congratulations to students:

MSUM has a new President, Dr. Timothy Downs

Dr. Timothy Downs became the 12th President of MSUM on July 1, 2023. He has more than 35 years of experience in higher education and prior to MSUM, Dr. Downs was the President at Northern State University, Aberdeen, S.D.. Welcome to MSUM, President Downs!

Construction Management Industry Advisory Board:

Our program has an active industry advisory board that is comprised of 18 construction professionals in the region. These members meet twice a year and provide significant support that benefits the overall program, our students, and faculty. Thank you to our board members!

Outstanding

Educator Award

–Rachel Axness, ASC Region 4

CM faculty, Rachel Axness, was awarded the ASC Region 4 Outstanding Educator Award. This is given to a faculty member who has a minimum of seven years teaching experience at a 4-year ASC member school. This award recognizes the faculty member’s contribution to construction education, excellence in teaching, national service to the Associated Schools of Construction, and dedication to the construction profession.

Pursuit Competition:

This is our seventh year participating in the Pursuit Competition hosted by Ryan Companies USA. In this competition, students respond to an RFP. The design is complete, so a detailed schedule and estimate are part of the proposal. Blackstone Construction (Luke Kuntz, Caleb David, Gino Jablonecki, and Jack Riley presented in Minneapolis to Ryan Company judges on April 24. Congratulations seniors!

U Of M Quiz Bowl

Four seniors competed in Quiz Bowl, a Jeopardy-like game against other regional schools, in early October. This event is hosted on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. They took 2nd place this year, behind the U of M team.

RICE Companies is building the new MSUM Alumni Center

We have an active construction lab right next to our academic buildings! Rice Companies is building the new MSUM Alumni Center, which is slated to be completed at the end of summer 2024. Jesse Helland, project manager with Rice Companies, has played a vital role in allowing our students to see first-hand project management duties. He led numerous tours of the jobsite and also allowed our senior students to attend the progress meetings. Thanks, Jesse!

High Demolition Tour

Thank you, Ben Naylor, 2016 MSUM construction management alum from Gehrtz Construction Services, for the tour of the Demolition of the old Moorhead High School. Ben also gave a presentation on the planning and scheduling process of building the new high school and demo of the existing high school.
