HW # 3 Magazine Stippling Assignment
We have just learned 6 additional shading techniques aside from the standard tonal shading. One of those techniques is stippling. To the left is an example of the sphere we practiced using the stippling technique. Stippling is best done in fine tip PEN and not with pencil, as pencil smudges. Make sure to complete a stippling value scale (steps 1-‐ 10) BEFORE you begin this assignment.
For this assignment, you will need to use a fine tip black pen. A #8 pen would be great, any smaller would probably take you too long. You will also need a pencil to complete your initial sketching, and an eraser to erase all your pencil lines after you’ve completed all your dots with your pen. -‐You will find a MAGAZINE photograph and tear it out. Try to find an image without TEXT. It can be a landscape, an action photo, a portrait, it doesn’t matter what, it just should show all 10 value steps. -‐Find a magazine image that is going to challenge you the right amount. If you are a beginner, it would be wise to choose a magazine image that doesn’t contain too many small details, and if you can find an image in black and white, that would be easier. If you are more experienced, then I expect you to challenge yourself with an image with more detail. -‐You will then cut out about 1/3 of the A4 magazine page. I expect that 1/3 of your A4 sketchbook page is complete with stippling so be mindful of this. You can cut out circles throughout the magazine page, or a few stripes down the middle, it is up to you, but cut out the interesting parts that show values and details. -‐You will glue the magazine image on your sketchbook. Please use a glue stick, since the liquid glue may make your paper lumpy. -‐Use the cut out pieces as GUIDES and in pencil, sketch out the missing areas onto the sketchbook paper. Sketch lightly as you will erase your pencil lines at the end. You may want to lightly shade in the values to help you with the stippling. -‐Once you’ve finished sketching with pencil and you know where all the differing tones (values) are located, then you may begin in PEN.
