ello and welcome to Australian Tyre Dealer. In the last edition, we featured international tyre company Zenises, which entered the Australian market this year. The company raised eyebrows at the REIFEN show in May when it revealed the world's most expensive tyre. Featuring gold leafing and diamond inserts, a set of four will set you back US$600,000. Astonishing. You can find out more on page 19, but it's well worth checking out the video on the Z Tyre Global Official Page on YouTube. In industry news, Bridgestone has unveiled a new fuel saving tyre - the Firestone F01 Fuel Fighter. The company says the new tyre incorporates an advanced rubber compound which enables it to roll further than a standard tyre with the same amount of force applied, delivering better fuel efficiency. The tyre will be available in a number of sizes to suit a range of vehicles in Australia. Other product news in this edition includes the launch of the Pirelli Dragon Sport tyre and the BF Goodrich Advantage tyre range. The Dragon Sport tyre has, says Pirelli, been designed exclusively for the Asia-Pacific market. The company says it is its ‘answer to the growing needs of brand-sensitive owners of mid-range middle class and synergic vehicles, who are asking for a tyre that is safe and sporty’. BFGoodrich, meanwhile, has launched the Advantage T/A® Drive and T/A® SUV tyres range in Australia. The company says the tyre range has been developed to meet the specific demands of drivers in this region and will 'ensure they are in control, in any weather, or demanding road condition'. Elsewhere, carbon fibre gets into the news thanks to supercars from Ford and Lamborghini.

The Ford GT will now come with super-light, super strong carbon fibre wheels as an option from supplier partner Carbon Revolution. Bespoke carbon fibre product manufacturer Vitesse AuDessus, meanwhile, has announced the launch of an extensive carbon fibre package for the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce Coupé and Roadster. The offering includes every external body panel for both the coupé and roadster variants. Offered separately, or bundled as a package, are Vitesse AuDessus's lightweight carbon fibre wheels with available styles including a Veneno-inspired seven spoke, the Superveloce’s OEM-style wheel and several in-house, centre lock designs. Also in this edition of Australian Tyre Dealer, in auto industry news, we take a look at Nissan's firebreathing monster, the GT-R, which will be heading to Australian shores later this year. Once here, the 560hp beast will join another incredible machine, the 5.2-litre V10-powered new Audi R8. The fastest production car ever built by the German manufacturer, the R8 V10 is capable of reaching 100km/h in just 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 330km/h. Also in this edition, we have news from around the globe and, of course, we check out some of the latest news from the world of motorsports. I hope you enjoy this edition of Australian Tyre Dealer. Feel free to drop me a line if you have some news you would like to share with the industry. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kumho reveals Kia-based 2.5L/100km concept city car

D

uring the recent REIFEN exhibition in Germany, Kumho was involved in the launch of an innovative, environmentally-friendly concept city car – the ‘Coop-Car 3 for free’. Based on a Kia Picanto, the car is powered by 0.9-litre 3-cylinder, 2-stroke common-rail diesel engine capable of delivering a fuel consumption of just 2.5l/100km. Part of the reason for the car being able to achieve these figures are the tyres – in this case, Kumho KH27 ECOWING ES01 tyres. The tyre was especially chosen for its low

rolling resistance and low noise level, following the achievement of top marks in these disciplines in a tyre test carried out by ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club), Europe’s largest motor club, in 2015. The working group behind the

Coop-Car 3 was establihed by the consulting company TCU² and co-ordinated by the Friedberg-based Mittelhessen University of Applied Sciences. It investigated the benefits of a 2-stroke engine for modern passenger cars and how they could be combined with innovations in regard to engine management, charging, fuel injection, fuel and lubricants in order to achieve the aim of minimal NOx and CO₂ emissions and low noise. A range of renowned industry names are also involved with the project, including Shell and Bosch. 5

Ford GT showcases advantages of carbon-fibre wheels T he all-new Ford GT supercar will also offer an all-new carbon-fibre wheel as an option. This makes the GT the second Ford Performance vehicle to offer carbon fibre wheels after the technology was included as standard equipment on the 2015 Shelby GT350R Mustang. Now, Ford say the GT will offer the next generation in carbon-fibre wheels, with an advanced resin and fibre technology that offers designers more freedom while also showcasing the structure of the material’s weave. Ford GT wheels will be offered in two finishes - a matte or a glossy clearcoat. The company says the finishes ‘perfectly match the two exposed carbon finishes available on the sills, fascia and extractor of the all-new supercar’. Working with supplier partner Carbon Revolution, the new wheels are constructed with the latest generation of fibre and resin technology that permits greater design flexibility resulting in flowing, more intricate spokes. Ford says that the use of carbon-fibre wheels brings a wealth of advantages over traditional

aluminium wheels, including weight savings, improved vehicle dynamics and ride quality. Beyond simply reducing overall vehicle weight for improved acceleration, braking and dynamic performance, carbon fibre’s strong, light nature means a reduction in unsprung weight and rotational inertia, which benefits suspension action, ride quality and dynamic performance. The Ford GT arrives standard with incredibly light, supercarspec, 10-spoke forged aluminium wheels, sized 8.5 x 20 inch/front, and 11.5 x 20 inch/rear. The optional carbon-fibre wheels on the Ford GT are the same size but are structurally stiffer, and save more than two pounds of unsprung weight per wheel. Ford says that a lighter wheel can improve steering feel and dynamics and the carbon fibre provides for overall improved performance in terms of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and a quieter ride leading to greater comfort and refinement. Nearly one-third of Australian cars are at-risk or failing in tyre safety O nly 68 per cent of Australian cars on the road have sufficient tread depth appropriate for safe driving according to new research by Continental Tyres. A random tyre check assessment of 16,904 cars was conducted by the company at over ten suburban car park locations across Australia in March, and revealed 27 per cent of cars surveyed had tyres that needed to be replaced within the next three to six months, and an alarming five per cent of cars were not roadworthy due to their tyres. “Our tyre tread research shows that not only does a serious knowledge gap exist about what constitutes safe tyres but also that Australian drivers are potentially not taking action when they do know,” said Steve Brown, Continental Tyres Managing Director. “Drivers need to act now to replace at-risk tyres and reduce the significant danger to not only their own safety but also the safety of their families and other road users.” Continental’s research also found: • Queensland cars have the safest tyres with 83 per cent of tyres checked classed as appropriate for driving (in the safest range of above 3mm tread) • Western Australia had the highest number of cars that were not roadworthy at 7 per cent (cars with below minimum legal requirements for tyre tread depth) • South Australia and Australian Capital Territory were the worst, with 38 per cent of cars recording at-risk tyres or tyres that had below legal minimum tread • New South Wales and Victoria, both with 32 per cent of cars possessing at-risk or unroadworthy tyres, were in line with the national average, however NSW has a markedly higher proportion of illegal tyres compared to VIC.

“Our tyre tread research shows that not only does a serious knowledge gap exist about what constitutes safe tyres but also that Australian drivers are potentially not taking action when they do know.” The legal minimal requirement in Australia for tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, however Continental Tyres found that tyres with tread between 1.6mm and 3mm can significantly impact braking

distances, especially in wet conditions, and recommends tyres with over 3mm are more appropriate for safe driving. According to the company’s research, in summer conditions the difference in braking from 100 km/h to 60 km/h in a standard passenger car with tyre tread of 3mm compared to a car with tyre tread of 1.6mm is around 20 metres. Continental Tyres has been a leader in road and tyre safety for more than 100 years and has a global safety mission called Vision Zero – a mission with a commitment to zero fatalities, zero injuries and zero accidents on our roads. “Road safety begins where the tyres touch the ground and our commitment to safety goes beyond producing world-class, high-tech tyres but also to informing as many drivers as possible about why and how they should protect themselves,” said Mr Brown. 7

Federal Budget 2016-17: SMEs and the Motor Trades T

he 2016 Federal Budget included many changes, some quite substantial, in areas such as tax, superannuation and training to encourage youth employment. Here is a summary of some of those critical elements that will impact on small and medium enterprises and businesses working within the automotive industry.

BUSINESS PACKAGE: TEN-YEAR ENTERPRISE TAX PLAN From July 1 this year, the small business tax rate will be lowered to 27.5 per cent and the turnover threshold for small businesses able to access it will be increased from $2 million to $10 million. This will effect up to 60,000 businesses which employ some 1.5 million Australians. Including the reduction from 28.5 per cent to 27.5 per cent for businesses with turnover of less than $2 million, more than 870,000 businesses, employing 3.4 million Australians, will have their tax reduced. The turnover threshold for access to the lower company tax rate of 27.5 per cent will be increased over 12

5 per cent to 8 per cent and the turnover threshold extended from $2 million to less than $5 million. From July 1, 2016, access to instant write-off for equipment purchases of up to $20,000 will be extended to businesses with a turnover of less than $10 million. The tax break is due to expire on June 30, 2017. Phase two of the ten-year enterprise tax plan will extend the lower tax rate of 27.5 per cent to all businesses by continuing to step up the threshold each year until 2023-24. The Government says the tax rate will then fall to 25 per cent in 2026-27.

“From July 1, 2016, access to instant writeoff for equipment purchases of up to $20,000 will be extended to businesses with a turnover of less than $10 million. The tax break is due to expire on June 30, 2017.”

TAXATION

four years, from $10 million to $25 million in 2017-18, to $50 million in 2018-19 and $100 million in 2019-20. The government says that by 2020, more than half of all employees in Australia – around 4.9 million people - will be working at companies paying the lower tax rate of 27.5 per cent. The unincorporated small business tax discount is to be increased from

From July 1, this year, the upper limit for the middle income tax bracket rises from $80,000 to $87,000 per year. The Government will establish a tax avoidance taskforce of more than 1,000 specialist staff within the ATO to police and ensure companies, multinationals and high wealth individuals pay the correct amount of tax. These measures are expected to raise an additional $3.9 billion in revenue over four years.

The tobacco excise will have four annual 12.5 per cent increases, with the first to take effect on September 1, 2017. The luxury car tax is expected to return $580 million in 2016-17.

SUPERANNUATION From July 1, 2017, access to superannuation tax concessions for the wealthiest will be reduced by: • introducing a transfer balance cap of $1.6 million on amounts moving into the tax-free retirement phase, with balances able to increase above this cap, on account of tax free earnings, once transferred; • extending the 30 per cent tax on concessional contributions to those earning over $250,000; • reducing the annual cap on concessional superannuation contributions to $25,000; and • establishing a lifetime nonconcessional contributions cap of $500,000. A Low Income Superannuation Tax Offset from 1 July 2017 will be introduced to ensure that people earning less than $37,000 are not paying more tax on their superannuation than they are on their income. Flexibility and choice in superannuation will be increased to support how people work and save.

INFRASTRUCTURE $50 billion national infrastructure plan • $594 million in additional equity to the Australian Rail Track Corporation for land acquisition and the continuation of pre-construction works and due diligence activities • $2 billion Water Infrastructure Loan Facility for new investment in dams and pipelines across Australia, building on the existing National Water Infrastructure Development Fund and the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility. • Funding for 180 other major projects under construction or in the pre-construction stage,

including upgrades to the Bruce Highway and Ipswich Motorway.

TRAINING The Government is to introduce an $840 million Youth Employment Package called Young Jobs PaTH (Prepare, Trial, Hire) to assist jobseekers gain new skills and experience that will help them join the workforce. Commencing in April 2017, young job seekers will be able to undertake comprehensive skills training to prepare them for the workplace. Job seekers will have to register with jobactive - the government body designed to connect employers and job seekers – and training will take place within five months of signing up. In stage two, the Government says it

will introduce an internship program with up to 120,000 placements over four years to help young job seekers, who have been in employment services for six months or more, to gain work experience with an operating business. Job seekers and businesses, with the help of their jobactive providers, will be able to work together to design an internship placement of 4 to 12 weeks’ duration, during which the job seeker will work 15 to 25 hours per week. Job seekers will receive $200 per fortnight, on top of their regular income support payment, while participating in the 1 to 3-month internship. Businesses that take on interns will receive an upfront payment of $1,000. In stage three, Australian employers will be eligible for a Youth Bonus wage subsidy of between $6,500 and $10,000, depending on the young person’s job readiness, while existing wage subsidies - including those for parents, Indigenous, mature age, and the long-term unemployed - will be streamlined, making them easier for employers to access. From December 1, 2016, eligibility for the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) will be broadened to allow access to self-employment training and mentoring for job seekers who are not in employment, education or training and those not on income support. A total of 8,600 places will be available annually and the NEIS will provide eligible job seekers with small business accredited training, mentoring and business advice for up to 52 weeks. Also part of the package aimed at young people is the ‘Exploring Being My Own Boss’ workshop, designed to engage job seekers to explore self employment, and Self Employment Starter Packs aimed at helping young people develop their ideas into successful businesses. The Government says it will achieve a saving of $247 million over 5 years from 2015-16 by reducing the annual funding available under the Industry Skills Fund. Funding of $206.9 million over five years will continue to be provided to support the training needs of small and medium enterprises which cannot be readily met by the national training system. 13

The installment of a straight, solid tread rib at the outside shoulder helps to increase lateral stability as well as further reducing the tyre’s road noise levels. A folded belt edge tape has been incorporated between the two tread belts for an improved handling performance at higher speeds. The Laufenn G FIT EQ has been developed with a 4-rib tread design incorporating centre rib kerfs with optimised depths helping, Hankook

says, to provide a smooth and quiet drive across various road conditions. These centre groove sipes allow for faster water drainage and together with kerfs applied on the blocks of the inner shoulder, improve the tyre’s wet performance. A special base compound under the tread layer helps to reduce the Laufenn G FIT EQ’s rolling resistance providing high fuel efficiency. The optimised tyre contour supports a more even wear through the equal weight distribution over the entire pattern width which, in combination with the adaption of a hybrid tread compound, provides a longer tread life. The company says that variable stiffness in the tread blocks minimises vibration and low noise levels, improving riding comfort. The Laufenn tyres brand line-up incorporates a pattern for commercial vans. Hankook says the X FIT VAN

provides secure driving stability and durability through a special rubber material, enhancing its structural coherence. Together with the double layer carcass construction and the adaption of a reinforced cover belt, driving stability is improved - essential for sustaining heavier vehicle loads with its square shape foot print design providing better road contact. The company says that, with the adaption of a special tread compound, the X FIT Van provides long mileage and good fuel efficiency. The tyre’s centre ribs are equipped with 3D lateral grooves and 3D block edges to provide good traction and braking performance in both wet and dry conditions without sacrificing tread block strength. The center rib sipes help to minimise the block movement improving steering stability.

Avon launches the ZX7 – its first ever ultra-high performance SUV tyre A von Tyres has added an allnew SUV tyre to their high performance range, the Avon ZX7. Designed for medium and large SUV fitments, the ZX7 – Avon’s first ultrahigh performance SUV tyre – offers excellent ‘A’ grade wet grip and handling. The company says the ZX7 has been developed with a unique asymmetric tread pattern specifically designed to cope with the weight of large SUVs. Large circumferential grooves in the tread clear water efficiently from the contact patch to reduce the risk of aquaplaning in wet conditions, while a large central rib increases feel and driving response. The tread pattern of the ZX7 features 3D sipes, which have interlocking three-dimensional points inside the sipe. The 3D sipes provide the same benefits of a traditional sipe, including helping the tyre warm up and providing enhanced wet grip, but limit the amount of flex in the tread block which, in turn, helps control

the amount of heat generation in the dry and keeps the tread block stable. Avon says that amongst the new tyre’s advanced technological features

are Noise Damping Structures (lines), which help break up the noise or ‘pipe resonance’ that forms between the circumferential grooves in the tyre and the road surface – allowing for a quieter drive. With a lightweight construction and reduced rolling resistance, the ZX7 also provides 'outstanding steering response'. The company says that moulds for Avon’s high performance tyre range utilise the latest technology in spring venting design for a higher-quality styling. A new bead profile design has also been utilised on the ZX7 to 'improve the tyre/ rim seat interface and to ease tyre fitting'. “Extending Avon’s high performance range with our new UHP SUV tyre gives us an even stronger offering in the passenger car market,” said Jeff Schumaker, Vice President of European Operations / Managing Director, Avon Tyres. itesse AuDessus, purveyors of bespoke carbon-fibre products, has announced the launch of an extensive carbon-fibre package for the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce Coupé and Roadster. The offering includes every external body panel for both the coupé and roadster variants. Parts can be purchased individually or in packages. The Essentials Package includes the lower front bumper, side skirts, mirrors and rear diffuser while the Extended Package also includes the bonnet. The parts come in the factory twill weave with a glossy or matte finish. Each part is fabricated using the highest quality pre-preg carbonfibre fabric that is autoclave-cured in CNC-milled aluminium molds, is hand-finished, and inspected to ensure quality that meets or exceeds the factory fit and finish. "There is no doubt that the Superveloce is an absolutely stunning supercar. One of the car's few aesthetic failings lies in the use of highly-visible plastic bodywork. Several SV owners approached us seeking a carbon-fibre option for these parts, namely the lower front bumper, side skirts, rear diffuser and mirrors. Our offering completes the visual story," said Stefany Sanchez, CEO of Vitesse AuDessus. Offered separately or bundled as a package are Vitesse AuDessus's lightweight carbon-fibre wheels. Available styles include a Veneno-

Nissan’s new Godzilla bound for Australia T he 2017 Nissan GT-R will be arriving on Australian shores in September. The fire-breathing supercar has received extensive enhancements in key areas, including a significantly 2017 Nissan GT-R reinforced chassis and more power from its twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter 24-valve V6. Nissan says the car is also more refined and comfortable than ever before with a new cabin that is ‘more luxurious and upscale’. There is upgraded leather trim, and a simplified centre dashboard layout has seen the integrated navigation and audio controls reduced from 27 switches in the previous model to just 11 in the 2017 version. The paddle shifters have now been mounted directly to the newly designed steering wheel rather than the steering column and the navigation system layout has been improved, with the dials now machined from real aluminium alloy and an enlarged 8-inch touch panel monitor features large icons on the display screen that allow the user to easily manage

the audio system, navigation system, telephone controls and other infotainment. The seats have had a makeover too, offering improved comfort and support for a better ride experience. The GT-R has had a refresh to its exterior too and, Nissan says, nearly all of those visual changes were intended to improve aerodynamic performance; more specifically, enhanced aerodynamic efficiency in three key areas: downforce generation, drag reduction and improved cooling of vital vehicle systems. Under the bonnet, the output for the GT-R’s 3.8-liter V6 24-valve twin-turbocharged engine has been increased by 20 hp compared to last year’s model (it now delivers 419kW/560hp

at 6800 rpm). There is also a new titanium exhaust system, updated six-speed dual clutch transmission and improved all-wheel-drive. Nissan says the handling capabilities and athletic performance of the new GT-R has been taken to another level too, thanks to a refined suspension system and a more rigid body structure that results in improved handling and better overall vehicle stability and there is improved noise, vibration and harshness reduction capabilities and standard safety kit including the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System. Other standard safety technologies include Advanced Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) stability control system with three driver-selectable modes (Normal, R-Mode, Off), Electronic Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), RearView Monitor, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and automatic on/off headlights.

The all-new Audi R8 Coupe arrives in Australia

Audi R8 Coupe

T

he all-new R8 Coupe has arrived in Australia with sharper looks, more advanced technology, and enough power to make it the fastest production Audi ever. “The first R8 was a landmark vehicle for the Audi brand,” said Andrew Doyle, Managing Director of Audi Australia. “It put Audi Sport performance firmly on the map in the luxury supercar segment. “The new R8 is faster than its predecessor, and boasts technology that rightly positions the Audi Sport brand as an innovator, even among its highly desirable competition. “This second-generation R8 has lost none of the versatility that helped make it so popular in the first place. It’s just as comfortable and pleasurable to drive as an everyday mode of transport on urban roads as it is on hallowed racetracks around the world, or driven along some of our finest touring routes,” said Mr Doyle. The new 5.2-litre FSI V10 engine develops 397kW/540Nm in the R8 V10, and 449kW/560Nm in the V10 plus. Capable of reaching 100km/h in just 3.2 seconds, before a top speed of 330km/h, the new R8 V10 plus is the fastest 22

production car Audi has ever built. Audi says that despite this level of performance, intelligent efficiency solutions ensure that fuel consumption figures remain responsible. The new Cylinder-on-Demand system can shut down an entire bank of five cylinders under light throttle load, while the start-stop system is new to the Audi V10 engine. These contribute to fuel consumption figures of 11.4 and 12.3 litres per 100km for the V10 and V10 plus respectively. Audi says the quattro all-wheel drive system in the new R8 is a completely new design and engineering concept. An electrohydraulic clutch distributes torque between the front and rear wheels, controlled by sophisticated software. Unlike the previous model, there is no fixed distribution. The front-

to-rear torque transfer is fully variable, depending on Audi drive select and the driving conditions. The R8 has a 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission that delivers lightning-fast gearshifts. The chassis of the all-new R8 debuts a new concept in the form of the Audi Space Frame (ASF) and Audi combines aluminium and carbonfibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) to form the basis of the occupant cell, making it lighter and stronger. Elsewhere in the chassis, innovation can be seen in the new electromechanical steering system, Audi’s magnetic ride system and the double-wishbone suspension architecture that is derived from racing. Aerodynamic development sees a near fullysealed underbody minimising drag, and a rear diffuser and fixed spoiler combination that contributes more than 100kg of downforce at speed (V10 plus). Other features of the R8 V10 include dual-branch sport exhaust system with trapezoidal tailpipes, 19-inch forged aluminium wheels, LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, Audi drive select with Audi magnetic ride, Audi Virtual Cockpit, MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch, New Audi Music Interface with 2x USB ports, Bang & Olufsen sound system, and DAB+ digital radio. The R8 V10 plus gets additional goodies including Audi drive select with performance mode, 20-inch forged aluminium wheels, Carbon ceramic brakes, specially tuned R8 V10 plus sport suspension, R8 performance flat-bottom steering wheel, R8 bucket seats, additional carbon design elements in front and rear spoilers, as well as rear diffuser. The new Audi R8 Coupe is on-sale now at $354,900 for the FSI V10 and $389,900 for the FSI V10 plus.

Great Wall Motors begins new operation in Australia and NZ G reat Wall Motor Company Limited will assume control of its Australian and NZ operations on July 1, pledging continued service for the existing customer base and dealer network and re-entering the market with an all-new utility called the Steed. “This signals the beginning of an exciting new era for China’s most successful utility manufacturer in the region,” said GWMA Managing Director Parker Shi. “As demand for utilities continues to grow, Great Wall Motors decided now was the time to take the brand to the next level by establishing a direct OE presence here.” Mr Shi said the company would deliver solutions to any customer and dealer issues with the backing of the company’s impressive resources.

Great Wall Steed

“Our emphasis will be customer service. We have a car park of more than 45,000 vehicles in Australia and New Zealand, and we would like all past and present owners to join the new organisation as we start down this exciting new road. “We are having discussions with the entire Great Wall dealer network and we are confident the vast majority will become part of the new business.

“Those discussions have revealed an enormous amount of goodwill for the GWM brand in both countries.” The company has confirmed its new dual cab utility will be called the Steed when it launches later this year. “In its home country, the Great Wall ute is called Wingle, which translates to ‘horse’. That’s why it has been called the Steed in the United Kingdom and why we have chosen that name,” said Mr Shi. “With its tough, rugged durability, we’re confident the Great Wall Steed will become a new best friend for many Australian farmers and tradesmen.” The line-up will include three dual cab versions – a 4x4 diesel, 4x2 diesel and 4x2 petrol. Standard safety features will include ESP and six airbags as standard on all three models. The new Great Wall Steed will go on sale early in Q4.

Rosberg takes victory in Europea M ercedes driver Nico Rosberg recorded his fifth win of the season as he took victory at the European Grand Prix – a race that took place for the first time on a circuit that snaked its way through the streets of Baku in Azerbaijan. The course, twisting and turning and, in certain places, extraordinarily narrow, was a real test for the drivers. However, though there were concerns there might be clashes and crashes, especially on the first few laps, there turned out to be surprisingly few dramas. Certainly, there were no concerns for Rosberg. The German driver started on pole position, led at the first corner and was never headed as he claimed the victory. “I am so happy to win here in Baku,” said Rosberg. “I really felt at one with the car in a way I’ve never felt before. I didn’t have the feeling that something

would go wrong at any point today. The car was awesome this weekend . . . It was a pretty straightforward afternoon for me at the front. There was only one little concern when I felt that I was down on power a bit in the middle of the race. The engineers weren’t allowed to tell me what I had to do, so I had a look at my steering wheel and tried to fix it myself, which worked out well.

I look forward to Austria now!” Second place in Baku went to Sebastien Vettel in the Ferrari with the talented Mexican driver Sergio Perez of the Force India Team taking the third spot. For defending World Champion Lewis Hamilton the weekend in Baku proved trying. A pretty miserable qualifying round saw him start from 10th on the grid and

seconds per lap as a result of the new regulations. A part of this reduction will come from better performance from the tyres during corners and under acceleration. THE NEW SIZES: The front tyre, which is currently 245mm wide, will increase to 305mm. The rear tyre will grow from 325mm to 405mm. So the new sizes for slick

tyres will be 305/670-13 at the front and 405/670-13 at the rear (the total diameter will go from the current 660mm to 670mm). Wheel rim diameter remains unchanged at 13 inches. THE INCREASE: The new tyres are more than 60mm wider at the front and more than 80mm wider at the back. Consequently, the 2017 tyre increases in width by 25% compared to the current size. This is the case for all three types: slicks, intermediates and full wet. CONTACT PATCH: The contact patch (the area of tyre in contact with the ground, assuming equal tyre pressures) will be optimised not just in terms of size, but also shape.

REGULATIONS: In 2017 there will be new technical rules that include a significant increase in aerodynamic downforce. though he was able to battle through to 5th spot, he ran into problems with his engine and power unit. Though the problem was temporary, it was enough to prevent him from challenging the leaders and the gap between him and Rosberg in the race for the championship has now blown out to 24 points. “I have no idea what happened out there today,” said Hamilton. “I just had no power. I was in an engine mode which made it feel like I was driving without ERS for a long time. We have hundreds of different combinations of switch position on the wheel and, no matter how much you study, there’s no way to remember them all. I was driving

around looking at my screen trying to work out what was wrong – but I couldn’t see anything I’d done differently. It’s such a complicated, technical formula we have now and I don’t really see the benefit in preventing us from being able to fix these things out on track. If I’d been able to resolve it, I might have at least been able to be a part of the show and fight with the guys ahead of me. With about ten laps to go it sorted itself out but by that time there was nothing to be gained or lost as I was more than ten seconds behind the guy in front and the same ahead of the guy behind. I actually turned the engine down at the end to save it, knowing that I don’t have so many left for the season. "It wasn’t to be today, so the result is what it is. I’ve got points for P5 and now I’ll try to bounce back at the next race.” For Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who has been on the cusp of recording a GP win a couple of times this season – including in Monte Carlo where his chance for victory was scuppered by a disastrous pit-stop – his second position on the starting grid promised great things but, once again, things didn’t go his way. He took to the pits a couple of times to try different tyre compounds, eventually settling for the hardest available for the race, but still could manage only a seventh-place finish. eam Toyo driver Gustavo (Tavo) Vildósola, Jr. and Toyo Tires won the 48th Annual SCORE Baja 500 at the beginning of June, finishing first overall for four-wheel vehicles and first in the Trophy Truck class. The #21 Vildósola Racing Toyo Tires trophy truck relied on 40-inch Toyo Open Country tyres to get through the desert terrain. “Winning a race in Baja requires perfection,” said Vildósola. “We have spent significant time testing our tyres coming into the SCORE Baja 500, as we knew conditions were going to be extreme. “The course was technical and rough, and the weather exceeded 120 degrees. Thanks to the dedication of my team and Toyo Tires in preparing for this race we were able to capture the overall victory. This is a great victory in preparation for the SCORE Baja 1000 and other races in the future.” This is the first overall SCORE Baja 500 win and second class win for Vildósola, who joined Team Toyo in December of last year. He also has two SCORE Baja 1000 overall wins in his career. Toyo Open Country tyres have won the SCORE Baja 500 twice, and the SCORE Baja 1000 three times thanks to Tavo Vildósola, Robby Gordon and BJ Baldwin.

Marquez leads MotoGP in tight championship race I t’s tight at the top of the MotoGP standings as the big names of the sport continue to trade victories in the fight for the championship. Marc Marquez, the 23-year-old double world champion sits atop the championship leaderboard on 125 points, just 10 points clear of three-time champ Jorge Lorenzo with seven-time champ Valentino Rossi a further 12 points behind. Former 250cc champion Dani Pedrosa sits on fourth place on 82 points. After victories for Marquez at the GP of the Americas and for Lorenzo at the GP of in France and at the GP of Italy at Mugello, it was Rossi’s turn to snag the podium spotlight with victory at the Catalunya circuit in Spain. The race started well for defending world champ Lorenzo, who leapt to the lead and looked to be on course for another Valentino Rossi celebrates victory win during the early laps. However, he seemed to struggle with tyre grip issues and, after dropping to fifth place, was in a bingle with Andrea Iannone that took both riders out of the race. Rossi started from fifth on the grid and after dropping to eighth at the first corner quickly made his way through the pack and was in the top three with 22 laps remaining. He claimed second spot from Marquez on lap six and took the lead on the next lap from Lorenzo. After that, it was to and fro between Rossi and Marquez as Lorenzo lost pace. The two front runners rode brilliantly until Rossi MOTOGP CHAMPIONSHIP LEADERBOARD was able to finally make a small 1 Marc Marquez Honda 125 break to win by 2.6 seconds. 2 Jorge Lorenzo Yamaha 115 Rossi's first place earned him 25 points, keeping him well in touch 3 Valentino Rossi Yamaha 103 with Lorenzo and Marquez. 4 Dani Pedrosa Honda 82 “The race was great!” said Rossi. 5 Maverick Vinales Suzuki 72 “Though the start was not fantastic,

I was strong enough to come back, do some good overtaking and arrive in front. From that moment, I tried to push at 100 percent to go away alone, but unfortunately I wasn‘t fast enough to pull away from Marquez. I tried to stay quiet and ride well, because I felt I had a good pace and felt good with the bike. At the end I was ready for the battle, which was a good one, with a lot of overtaking . . . You can‘t wish for a better race, I think.” The GP was overshadowed by the death of rising 250cc star Luis Salom who died after an accident during a practice session. The young Spanish rider fell at turn 12, hitting the crash barriers at high speed. Severely injured, he was evacuated from the scene by ambulance to a nearby hospital but despite the best efforts of the medical teams he did not survive. Salom’s death was the first in the sport since the passing of Marco Simoncelli at the Malaysian GP in 2011.

Toyota falters on last lap as Porsche snatches Le Mans victory I

n an astonishing ending to the 24-hour Le Mans race, the No.5 Toyota TS050 car, that had been leading the race (though only just) from the No. 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid and its sister No. 6 Toyota car, spluttered to a halt with just three minutes left on the clock. It was an amazing and heartbreaking end to the race for Toyota and, as the No.5 car stopped, it was the No.2 Porsche 919 Hybrid of Neel Jani, Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb, that passed the stricken Toyota and went on to claim a famous victory – Porsche’s 18th Le Mans win. With more than a 90 second lead at one stage, it seemed that Toyota had the win in the bag but halfway round the penultimate lap the car, driven by Japanese driver Kazuki Nakajima, began to lose power before coming to a stop just past the finish line. Toyota would have become only the second Japanese manufacturer to win the race, after Mazda in 1991, but instead finished as runners-up for the fifth time when the team’s second car, the No.6 car of Stephane Sarrazin, Kamui Kobayashi and Mike Conway finished four laps behind the winner. The Audi R18 of Lucas Di Grassi, Loïc Duval and Oliver Jarvis took third spot. It was an agonizing end for

the Toyota team and British driver Anthony Davidson, who was partnered with Nakajima, tweeted: "I literally have no words. Kazuki on the radio as he crossed the line: 'I'm ready to cry guys.' Don't worry mate. I was already there. I'm proud of my team mates for putting up such a fight. We almost had it, but congrats to Porsche." The winning Porsche drivers were sympathetic in victory. “I feel heartbroken for the Toyota

drivers,” said Neel Jani. “I think every racing driver knows how this feels like. I still have no words to describe winning the 24 hours of Le Mans. This is really surreal. Still we drove a very good race with very few mistakes and pushed the car to the maximum. This win is really, really special.” For Mark Webber and his teammates Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley in the second Porsche, things did not go well. Webber had piloted the Porsche 919 Hybrid to the lead but a faulty water pump put paid to any hopes of a win. However, after a long stop for repairs during the night, the drivers' fought back to finish 13th overall and fifth in the LMP1 class. “I am very proud of the team, proud of the mechanics who worked so hard,” said Webber. “It wasn’t our day and we were unlucky with the water pump. That was the big problem for us, we lost a lot of time. But Timo’s and Brendon’s drives were awesome. In the end we all prayed for car 2 and of course I’m happy for our team mates and Porsche. But what has happened to Toyota today, is really hard to take and you have to feel for them.” In other categories, Ford made a triumphant return to the famous French course with victory for the Ford GT in the GTE Pro category.

nother demanding race, another remarkable ride from Toby Price. The Australian off-road motorbike racer, who won the Dakar Rally at the beginning of the year, recorded another victory on two wheels at the Finke Desert race, finishing the 450-kilometre, two-day return journey from Alice Springs to Finke in top spot to claim a record-equaling fifth bike title. Not only that, Price also made a valiant Toby Price attempt at winning the classic desert duel on four wheels, finishing second in the #487 6000cc Geiser Brothers Trophy Truck trophy truck. “It’s a bit of a surreal feeling to have tied the record out here for the most wins,” Price told the media. “I’m pumped, and just glad the whole program we put together went to plan, we podiumed in the truck and then won the bike leg - it’s been an amazing weekend. The pair were surprise winners – beating some big names along the way. It was another good weekend in the desert for BFGoodrich Tires too. BFGoodrich Tires’ partners saw them not only claim the top three positions outright, but also the top three in the Pro Buggy class and top two in the Truck class. "I'm stoked to have BFGoodrich Tires on board - they've given me the best tyres to get the job done. They feel amazing, great grip, we were sure they would not let us down and they didn't,” said Price after the weekend. “The BFGoodrich tyres worked amazingly well. oyo Tires knows how to show off its wares to good effect. Having been behind a number of excellent videos over the years, the company has produced a second episode of its Surprising the World series. The company says the video is ‘focused on celebrating life, the mesmerising driving performance of the two cars is synchronised with various scenes of everyday life to show the integration of Toyo Tires as a brand that enhances the performance of cars while also being a part of the daily life of people everywhere’. That’s all fine, of course, but the really great thing about the company’s videos is the incredible footage of drivers doing awesome things with their cars. This time, the 1000 horsepower Nissan GT-R Greddy 35RX and competition drift spec Toyota 86, both equipped with Proxes tyres and driven by D1GP champion Masato Kawabata and Hideyuki Fujino of Team Toyo Tires Drift, tear around the grounds of the Toyo Tires Japan factory. Headquartered in the decimated Miyagi Prefecture, Toyo Tires’ ‘Made in Miyagi’ campaign celebrates how far the region has come while restoring pride to its industry. Toyo Tires has longstanding ties with the communities of the Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures, having established its primary factory in the Miyagi Prefecture in 1962. THE MIRACLE KICK

I

t was a kick that stopped the nation. During the threequarter time break during the GWS Giant's 100th game, Sydney man Paul Waterhouse slotted home a kick that made him a household name and a rather tasty $100,000. Earlier that afternoon, Paul had participated in Toyo Tires’ on-site social media activation. Posting a selfie with his family of his best game face to Instagram with the hashtag #DRIVENTOPERFORM, he entered a contest with hundreds of other fans. First prize? The chance to kick a football into a stack of four Toyo tyres from 40 metres away at three-quarter time. Forty metres from his target, Paul lined up a drop punt and went for it. The ball, heading straight and true, stuttered on the top of the stack before dropping in. The capacity crowd gave him

the loudest cheer of the night. Appearing on television program The Project to discuss the miracle kick, Waterhouse was understandably jubilant. “I had plenty of kicking practice with my brother growing up, but I had no idea when I arrived at the game that I was going to be kicking in front of a full house for $100,000,” he said. After finding out he won the opportunity to have shot at quarter time, Paul immediately

went and practised his kicking. “When they put my name on the scoreboard at quarter time I was so nervous. I went and found a young kid outside with a Sherrin and practised kicking the footy with him. “When you get out there it’s a whole different world: the crowd’s around you, and you’re trying to adapt to the lights. I said to myself ‘you’ve got one shot, just go long and high’.”

Toyo Tires’ Sendai factory continues its yearly regional Friendship Fair, and the company has transformed rubble into man-made hills and carried out memorial tree planting projects, creating high natural refuges against any future tsunami. Toyo Tires is also labelling the sidewalls of tyres manufactured in the region’s factories with special ‘Made in Miyagi’ logos.
