Our cover story for this month revolves around Monterey Car Week. Taking place on California's Monterey Peninsula, several events - from auctions to display shows to the famous Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance - are held, almost all with a focus on the very high end of the luxury and performance flavours of automotive machines. And it's not just vintage and classic cars either. As our front cover shows with the Dodge Charger Daytona EV, manufacturers - which this year included, amongst others, Bugatti, McLaren, Aston Martin, and Hennessey - take the opportunity Monterey gives them to unwrap their latest, tastiest creations. . This November, on the evening of Saturday the 19th, MTA Queensland will be holding its annual Industry Awards Gala. It's a glamorous affair and the event at which the Association announces the winners of several business and training awards. The finalists for the business awards - which include the Community, the Women In Industry, and the Innovation awards - have been announced, and you can find out who is in the running for the prestigious accolades on pages 14 and 15. The other big award to be announced at November's gala will be the winner of the MTA Queensland Apprentice of the Year award. Our regular Divisional Committee meetings also continue to gain great momentum, with specially chosen guest speakers driving increased attendance and participation. Our latest RVID meeting was attended by the Qld Police, who discussed the ongoing threat of Diesel Particulate Diffusers (DPF/DPD) theft and shared possible countermeasures. We also had Tyre Stewardship Australia attend our APRD meeting to create awareness around the responsible management of end-of-life tyres (EOLT) and deliver a message on the value of joining the Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme.
One constant we have seen throughout these recent meetings is that many members are not taking full advantage of the value of MTA Queensland membership. Our full range of instant value and other member benefits are available on our website, and I will continue to delve into what is included over the coming months. Until then, take care.

Well, we must ensure we are doing everything to equip ourselves with the right facts and evidence to support our claims. We must understand what the impacts of electrification will be on the automotive industry, our economy, and on our way of life.
It is fortunate then, that much of this evidence is already available if we look outward at what other countries are doing. Germany, Norway, Sweden, the UK, and other parts of Europe are already thriving when it comes to EV uptake, which gives us a fantastic opportunity to learn what the driving force behind these changes are, and what barriers continue to impose themselves as the transition picks up pace.
This month I will be joining representatives from the other state’s MTAs on an expedition to Europe to meet with OEMs and industry heavyweights and gain first-hand insight into the strategies implemented to drive their transition. Equipped with this knowledge we can work with policymakers locally to build a pathway that benefits all. I look forward to briefing members on key learnings upon my return!

From the Desk of Management WITH LONGSTANDINGOUR vision to be Queensland’s most engaged industry body, we understand that genuine engagement starts with opportunity. This year has seen a focus on creating more opportunities for members to participate in industry discussions and present their views on the issues that impact them, while also engaging in conversations with fellow local businesses. We recently hosted members and stakeholders from the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and Toowoomba regions for a series of engaging discussion sessions. It was fantastic being able to connect face-to-face with so many members, and we were able to take away some great learnings about topics at their heart, including inadequate Safety Certificate fees for carrying out inspections, the integrity of inspections and safety of the vehicle, and written-off vehicles. A big thank you to all who attended.
The challenge remains, however, that much of the debate is based on ideology rather than evidence. As a result, some of the myths that continue to circulate can be difficult to challenge without coming across as part of the flat earth we as an industry deal with this misinformation and get the discussion back on track?

Jasmine and Steve Flanagan own and run Currumbin Wreckers - a one-stop-shop operation offering wrecking, parts sales, mechanical and towing services. As well as running a successful business, Jamine is also vice-chair of MTA Queensland's Parts Recyclers Division, focusing on trends, skilling needs, representation, and innovation opportunities for the sector. Motor Trader caught up with Jasmine to talk about her business, the Parts Recycling industry, and more.

What is your background in the industry and how did you and Steve come to own Currumbin JF:Wreckers?

JF: Steve is hands-on in all aspects of the business, from wrecking to sales to mechanical, and he is a used car dealer also. Most of my work now is behind the scenes in the daily running of our businesses as well as other commitments. I’m based at the workshop more these days but I still help in sales and other roles when needed. We have encouraged our 12 staff and put them through apprenticeships, trade certificates and micro-credential courses to give them more confidence, and certifications for which they deserve to be recognised. At this stage, we also have two employees engaged in an the automotive parts sales interpreter apprenticeship. You are vice-chair of MTA Queensland’s Parts Recyclers Division working on behalf of businesses in the sector. What issues is the parts recycling industry currently facing?
JF: I am passionate about automotive recycling and how we can get involved in reducing waste or continuing parts' lifespan in other forms. However, the costs of overheads to run a business, Government levies, insurances, waste disposal and fuel increases, to name just a few things, are getting higher. Tyres are getting harder to dispose of, although there are companies that have invested in this area and their results are great. Hard plastics used in cars, as well as fluff, has hardly any attention paid to it here compared to other countries such as Japan, and we are lucky to have Associations like MTA Queensland rallying our government, as well as entrepreneurs such as Safraz Ali who is doing a PHD at QUT focusing and educating people on how to solve this issue. It is clear that Australia is way behind in government initiatives and funding to reduce this waste, but I think we are moving forward. Electrified vehicles are making plenty of headlines at the moment. Do you expect them - and their components such as batteries - to have an impact on your industry?

We purchased Currumbin Wreckers in 2015 and after 20 years of working in of Dental Assisting, I joined Steve in this new venture. It has been seven years and we are quickly growing thanks to my husband’s entrepreneurialism, the support of family and friends, and the great team we have on board. You run a busy and successful enterprise. What roles do you and Steve have in the business?
JF: We are aware of the increase in the media about these vehicles, and I see a Tesla every time I’m driving these days. We know too that they will change the face of car dismantling in the future as there is a whole new aspect in dealing with the MTA | 2022
JF: We have trained our staff in many areas and recently Gordan, our senior mechanic, completed an Introduction to Hybrid and EV vehicles with MTA Queensland. At this stage, however, we have not seen many of these vehicles enter the workshop. There are more electrical components/ sensors [such as Lidar and Radar] in latemodel vehicles, but they can be difficult to identify and salvage accordingly. There may be an issue with dismantling which
different components, especially batteries and their disposal which is a safety minefield for small business and does not come cheap. It is not yet known what impact it will have for this industry, but a bonus of being involved with Associations such as the MTA Queensland is that we will be at the forefront of this knowledge and have the available resources to be prepared for what comes. Are you planning for the arrival of electrified vehicles in your mechanical workshop, and are there other new technologies that you are seeing and having to deal with across your businesses?

JF: We use a social media/SEO company to look after our website and social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. We do our own advertising on Marketplace and Gumtree for car sales, and Google is also a very important aspect of marketing. I have had personal experience with the Government's 'Business Station' program where they offer training for small businesses to learn how to improve their visibility on digital platforms. We are also a member and preferred supplier of Capricorn Society and, obviously, a member of the MTA Queensland. Word of mouth referrals are always appreciated, as is a good standing in the community. That is very important to us. When did you become a member of MTA Queensland and why did you decide to take on the role of Vice-Chair of the Parts Recyclers Division?
How do you market your business? What is the most effective way you have found to get your message out to the public?
JF: We joined MTA Queensland in 2021 and I became a committee member of the Parts Recyclers Division. I enjoyed learning about the innovations that were being discussed as well as the issues that we face in this industry and how we might solve them. I was inspired and felt great being involved in something bigger than one small business. I was asked by the division Chairman Lawrie Beacham to stand as Vice-Chair and accepted in 2021. During this time I have met some truly great people and learnt much more about our recycling industry. Together with Lawrie, Tracey Randall our Secretary, and the great team that makes up MTA Queensland, we disucss industry trends, skill requirements, automotive

What do you do with your spare time, if you have any!?
Obviously, spending time with family and friends is important. We all like to travel overseas, but since Covid we’re trying to see more of our country, whether it be through camping, motorbikes or 4X4. We go to car and bike shows and rallies too. A favourite in last two years has been the Rocky Nats and we are on the way to Bathurst this year. There's never a dull moment in our lives but it keeps us stimulated. We're tired but not complaining. Life is good! HAPPY, FRIENDLY AND KNOWLEDGABLE STAFF HAS BEEN A KEY ELEMENT TO OUR SUCCESS . . .”

This is truly an exciting age that we are entering for women, and it is an honor to be involved in any way I can. What does the future look like for Currumbin Wreckers?
JF: The future looks stable at the moment as people are always looking for secondhand parts, towing services and reliable mechanics. We aim to make things even more user-friendly and alter the stereotype of the wrecking industry which has been seen as intimidating to many people, especially women. Having happy, friendly and knowledgeable staff has been a key element to our success and customer referral base. Having women present in the office, on the phone and picking parts adds another level of comfort and service to everyone involved. It also adds another element to staff interactions and we are all great friends.
JF: Spare time? Yes we do have to make time for that, as hard as it may be!

A COUPLE OF HOURS south of San Francisco lies the Monterey Peninsula – a large and picturesque wedge of land that juts out into the Pacific Ocean. Some 60,000 people live here, split between towns and communities including Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach, and the area is known for its scenery and natural beauty, local wineries, seafood and, in the City of Monterey, a smalltown atmosphere, restaurants, and arts community.
THE ERA OF the extraordinary, monstrously powerful, iconic W16 engine is coming to an end. So says Bugatti, which has used the massive Volkswagendeveloped engine in a slew of its potent and record-breaking sports cars – from the Veyron to the Chiron to the Bolide, amongst others. The company is not, however, saying goodbye to the engine without one last hurrah, and that comes in the form of this, the W16 Mistral roadster. Built around the 1180kW incarnation of the W16 engine, the Mistral offers, Bugatti says, performance unlike any open top car that has gone before and one that will set the benchmark for open-top roadsters.
September 2022 Motor Trader | 19 Once a year in August, the area becomes a magnet for automotive enthusiasts as Monterey Car Week dominates the events calendar. And there is some epic stuff to enjoy for those with an appreciation of fine automotive craft. An abundance of car-related events are held - almost all favouring the high-end historical, luxury and performance side of the industry – including the worldfamous Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance and several auctions at which, if you have a thick wallet and deep pockets, you can pick up an exceedingly rare and classic motor or two. For example, this year’s Sotheby’s auction included a 1955 Ferrari Sport Spider which sold for an eye-wateirng $US22 million ($AU 32.2 million). But Monterey Car Week is not all about classics of the past, with manufacturers also taking the opportunity to unveil their latest luxury creations. And this year was a beauty, with some real stunners being unwrapped by, amongst others, McLaren, Lincoln, Bugatti, and Aston Martin. So, in this month’s Motor Trader, we’re going to take a look at a handful of these stunning, sometimes outrageous, automotive works of art.

The four-light headlights are a nod to the W16 Mistral’s four-wheel-drive and four turbochargers, but their threedimensional surface also functions as an aerodynamic aid that funnels air through the light and out through the wheel arch to improve aerodynamic drag.
There’s plenty to like here, of course. The Mistral, while inspired by the Chiron model, has many unique features. Bugatti says its design and engineering is completely bespoke, with the existing monocoque not simply cut off above the A-pillars to make way for the new open-top design, but re-engineered and reshaped – using composite materials, aluminium and 3D-printing technology - to create a ‘more rounded silhouette without compromising performance.’
The wider horseshoe grille up front allows the engine radiator to be fed from one intake, while the two side intakes provide air to the intercoolers. Oil cooler intakes are on the side while the engine air intakes now sit on the roof, just behind the occupants. Those intakes, fashioned from carbon fibre, are strong enough, Bugatti says, to support the whole weight of the car in case of a rollover.
The X-taillight at the rear, meanwhile, serves the function of venting the side oil coolers through ducts connecting the triangular space between the X lights to the side radiators. On the inside, there’s woven leather and carbon fibre everywhere and in a nod to the W16 Mistral’s predecessors, the gear shifter is machined from a solid block of aluminium and features a touch of wood and an amber insert. It is all pretty spectacular and looks like a fine way to farewell the engineering artwork that is the W16 engine.

ASTON MARTIN V12 VANTAGE ROADSTER ASTON MARTIN INTRODUCED the limited production V12 Vantage Roadster during Monterey Car Week. Just 249 units of the luxury Roadster will be built, and wellheeled buyers lucky enough to get their hands on one will get another splendid vehicle from the British manufacturer. paired with 4-piston calipers. The Roadster’s front bumper, clamshell bonnet, front fenders and side sills are made from carbon fibre, with the rear bumper and deck lid made from composite material. Additional weight savings have been made with the adoption of a lightweight battery and a aerodynamic balance, while increased cooling comes via the reshaped front grille and the ‘horseshoe’ engine vent in the bonnet. A rear wing can be specified as an option for the Roadster. 21-inch alloy wheels are offered in two finishes, satin black or satin black diamond turned. An optional lightweight forged wheel option is also available. Michelin Pilot 4S high performance tyres – 275/35 R21 front and 315/30 R21 at the rear – are standard fitment. The V12 Roadster is fitted with Sports Plus Seats trimmed in semi-aniline leather and featuring a ‘Wings’ quilt and perforation pattern. A carbon fibre performance seat with exposed carbon fibre shell and manual 6-way adjustment can be had as an option. Customers can use Aston Martin’s bespoke customisation service, Q by Aston Martin, to give their Roadster unique touches. Deliveries of the V12 Vantage Roadster are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of this year.

SPECIAL VEHICLES, the Texas-based hypercar manufacturer that has made its reputation on building phenomenally swift and powerful cars, has revealed its latest creation, the Venom F5 Roadster. If things hold to form, the Roadsterwhich is based on Hennessey’s Venom F5 Coupe - could become the world’s fastest convertible with Hennessey saying a top speed over 300mph (480km/h) is in its Powersights!forthis lightning-quick machine comes from a twin-turbocharged, 6.6-litre ‘Fury’ V8, mid-mounted in the carbon-fibre monocoque chassis. That engine develops a whopping 1817bhp (1355kW) and that grunt is sent to the rear wheels through an automated single-clutch gearbox. At the rear, the curious can get a good look at the Venom F5 Roadster powerplant through a tempered glass engine viewing window. The F5 Roadster’s body panels are carbon fibre, and its roof is a removable single-piece panel made from rigid carbon fibre composites and lined with Alcantara upholstery. Weighing in at 8kg, the weatherproof panel is secured with four quick-release bolts and a pair of high-strength latches to withstand high acceleration and the aerodynamic forces at extreme speed.

That petrol-powered line-up of Challenger and Charger will come to an end with seven heritage-influence variants for the 2023 model year, and each will share a connection to an iconic Dodge model from the past, reaching back to the dawn of the muscle-car era in the 1960s and 1970s, when the Charger and Challenger nameplates emerged. Instead, the Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust pushes its performance sound through an amplifier and tuning chamber located at the rear of the vehicle. Also fitted is an eRupt Transmissiona multi-speed transmission with electromechanical shifting delivering distinctive shift points, and for those times when an extra bit of juice is required there’s a PowerShot push-to-pass feature, activated by the push of a button on the steering wheel, that delivers a jolt of extra power for a quick burst of acceleration. A button on the steering wheel also enables the driver to pick from Auto, Sport, Track and Drag modes, which change the driving dynamics, instrument cluster information, Head-up Display content, performance sound and interior lighting features of the vehicle. The Charger Daytona SRT Concept looks great, like a muscle car should, with retro styling and futuristic touches such as full width lighting front and rear, flush door handles, and 21-inch wheels with a turbine-like design and red Fratzog logo on the wheel centre locks marking it as something a bit special. On the inside, the interior is suitably modern. There’s a 12.3-inch centre screen angled toward the driver, a 16-inch curved instrument cluster, and an 8-by-3-inch Head-up Display.

most famous nameplates in automotive history, and Porsche has unveiled another rip-snorting variant of its iconic model with the GT3 RS. Plenty of racetrack-derived tech has gone into the new car, including some clever aerodynamics and lightweight construction and the result is a road-legal highperformance sports car that, with its 4-litre, naturally aspirated, six-cylinder boxer engine running power through a sevenspeed PDK double-clutch transmission, generates 386kW and can rip to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds and top out at 296km/h. The aerodynamic features include continuously adjustable wing elements in the front and a massive swan-neck rear wing which consists of a fixed main wing and an upper, underneath.flowingthatthere’selement.adjustablehydraulicallywingUpfront,afrontsplitterdividestheairoverandFront wheel arch ventilation is provided via openings in the front wings. components of the double-wishbone front axle designed with teardropshaped profiles. The 911 GT3 RS offers three driving modes: Normal, Sport and Track. In Track mode, the basic settings can be individually adjusted. Among other settings, the rebound and compression damping of the front and rear axles can be adjusted separately and in several stages. The rear differential can also be adjusted via rotary controls on the steering wheel. Braking power is delivered by aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes with six pistons each and brake discs on the front axle. The rear axle is fitted with brake discs and four-piston fixed-calliper brakes. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes are an option. The interior is suitably racing-inspired, with black leather, Racetex microfibre material, and carbon-weave finish. The 911 GT3 RS is available with the Clubsport package at no extra cost, which includes a steel rollover bar, a hand-held fire extinguisher and six-point seat belts for the driver. A Weissach package, available at extra cost, offers much more, including more components made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) – including the roll cage – and lighter, magnesium forged wheels. In Australia, the 911 GT3 RS will be equipped with Tinted LED main headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), automatically dimming mirrors including rain sensor, front-axle lift system, ParkAssist (rear only), reversing camera, tyre fit set (sealant) and digital radio. THIS IS THE McLaren Solus GT, once a car that lived in the digital world of the Gran Turismo Sport video game but now brought to life as a fully-fledged, trackonly hypercar. A special commission for just 25 customers – with all cars already sold –the single-seat, closed-cockpit track car was unveiled during Monterey Car Week and will, McLaren says, deliver a driving experience ‘close to the engagement and sensation of driving a Formula 1 car. Weighing in at less than 1,000kg, the Solus GT is based around a carbon fibre monocoque, with front and rear chassis structures also made from carbon fibre and the engine and gearbox forming the rest of the chassis. At its heart, the car has a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine that revs to more than 10,000rpm and delivers 618kW and 650Nm through a seven-speed sequential gearbox. McLaren says the Solus GT should do the 0-100km/h sprint in 2.5 seconds and reach a maximum speed of more than 320km/h. Visually a striking machine – with a sliding canopy above the single, central seat being one of the more eye-catching elements – the Solus GT is all about on-track performance. The wheels - 18-inch forged aluminium wheels with centre locking nuts - are shrouded in aerodynamic pods. Braking is provided by 6-piston monobloc machined aluminium calipers and carbon brake discs and pads. A large front splitter feeds air into ground-effect tunnels before it exits the car via a full diffuser, and a motorsportinspired intake above the cockpit integrated into the design of the roll hoop cover feeds cold air into the engine. Race car design also inspired the sidepods which house the
Solus GT’s radiators. A twinelement, fixed rear wing is key to a downforce figure of 1200kg that can be generated. The suspension system incorporates double wishbones with inboard torsion bar damping, operated via pushrods at the front and pullrods at the rear. Both axles are linked by anti-roll bars, with tuning options available to the driver.
McLaren is offering a full ‘racing driver experience’ to Solus GT customers. This includes a driving seat moulded to the driver’s individual body shape; an FIA-homologated race suit, helmet and HANS device (head and neck restraint) bespoke to each owner, and radio-enabled ear inserts. A full driver-development coaching program will also be available. The McLaren Solus GT is currently at the track-testing stage of its development process with the first of the 25 cars scheduled for delivery in 2023.

From time-to-time Bentley will produce limited edition, uber-luxury creations, and these often fall under the care and direction of the company’s coachbuilding division, Mulliner. The division has created plenty of special editions over the years, including of Bentley’s Continental GT, the Flying Spur, and the Mulsanne, as well as such astounding cars such as the Bacalar that appeared in 2020.
Now, they have come up with the Batur Grand Tourer and it is, of course, dropdead gorgeous and dripping with all the luxurious appointments one would expect of a limited-edition Bentley.
Just 18 cars are to be built (all are already spoken for) and the buyers will get a supremely powerful, beautiful machine for their money.

As always with Bentley, customers will be able to access an almost unlimited array of options – from paint to graphics, from the colour of the 22-inch wheels to the interior upholstery and veneers to the material used for control knobs and buttons, anything is possible. In fact, for the Batur, certain controls, including the organ stops for ventilation, are available in 3D-printed 18K gold! While the Batur is a special, limitededition model, there is more to digest here than just a rare, luxury motor. Bentley says that the Batur previews the design principles driving the development of its first battery-electric vehicle, due in 2025, and the family of cars that will follow. If that’s the case and the Batur represents the future look of the brand, we reckon they’ve got it spot on.
WE ALL LOVE a good, futuristic concept car, and Lincoln – the luxury brand of Ford which has owned Lincoln for a century –unwrapped its very stylish Model L100 at Monterey Car Week. It certainly looks like it belongs in a future a few years (or decades) from now, with its streamlined shape, tapered rear, and illuminated wheels. Envisioned as an autonomous vehicle offering an ‘intelligent driving experience, connectivity and software-driven innovations’, the Model L100 Concept is designed to use next-generation battery cell and pack technologies but, just as importantly, gives an indication of what Lincoln designers consider when creating a cabin space which meets the requirements of its ‘Quiet Flight DNA’ – that is to say it is a ‘beautiful gliding human sanctuary.’ That’s a nice, flowery way of describing an interior that is all about comfort, ease and relaxation, and the Model L100 appears to do a fine job of that. “Concept vehicles allow us to reimagine and illustrate how new experiences can come to life with the help of advanced technologies and allow our designers more creative freedom than ever before,” said Anthony Lo, chief design officer, Ford Motor Company. “With the Model L100, we were able to push the boundaries in ways that evolve our Quiet Flight brand DNA and change the way we think about Lincoln designs of tomorrow." a jewel-inspired chess piece controller that replaces the traditional steering wheel; seating configurations allow for passengers to engage with each other - the front row seats are able to be flipped so front passengers can sit across from rear passengers; the cabin trim is created with animal-free materials and luxury alternatives; and the interior has been designed to create an immersive environment – a digital floor, canopy and ambient lighting are supposed to harmonise to create a personalised experience.Gettingin and out should be nice, easy and relaxing too thanks to an extraordinary set-up of huge doors and a roof canopy hinged at the back. Suitably grand and ambitious, the Model L100 Concept is what one might expect from a luxury brand, and while this is unlikely to be a production model, if this is where things are heading, those who can afford such vehicles in the future will have a very relaxing time during their daily commute.

QUEENSLAND AUTO INDUSTRY SWINGS INTO ACTION AT MOTOR TRADES GOLF DAY

S OME OF THE automotive industry’s best – or at least most enthusiastic – golfers took to the fairways of the Virginia Golf Club in Brisbane at the beginning of September to battle for the title, and a year’s worth of bragging rights, at the 72nd Motor Trades Golf Day. 16 teams, comprising some 60 players representing more than 25 businesses, swung into action early on the cool, overcast morning of September 2nd to play the 18 holes of the Virginia Golf Club course in a competition run under Ambrose rules – where the location of the single best shot from the team is used by all team members for their subsequent shots. There was plenty of talent spread across the course with no one team running away from the field. The result was a close-run thing, but it was the team from QG Auto Electrical & Air Conditioning comprising Quentin Gill, Wayne Gill, Allan Cutts, and Charlie Corser who came up aces, securing the championship title with a score of 52.
Not far behind, with a score of 55.25, was the combination team from EMoS Australia and Bartons Motor Group. The competition’s youngest player, 11-year-old Sam Proskefalas, was part of that team along with his father Harry Proskefalas, and together with Simon Wallis and Justin Bath, this group played a blinder to clinch the runner-up spot. A couple of ‘nearest the pin’ competitions were held on Hole 3 and Hole 12 as the teams played through the course, with Bruce Coates from Active Forklift Service picking up the win on Hole 3, and Peter Smale on Hole 12. It has also been holding meetings in regional centres across the state at which the MTA Queensland leadership team of Rod Camm, CEO of MTA Queensland Group, and Kellie Dewar, Deputy Group CEO and General Manager of Member Services, have been engaging with members to hear from them directly.
An example of what can result from these fruitful events followed a discussion on EV and hybrid vehicle training. MTA Queensland offers such training, including hybrid and EV inspection and servicing skill set courses that are delivered at the MTA Institute training facility in Brisbane. A member enquired whether that training could instead be delivered to their 16 staff on-site at their own workshop. As a consquence of this discussion, MTA Queensland is now committed to develop EV training that can be delivered regionally, and this will be done as a priority. “We had a very engaged group of members,” said Ms Dewar of the Gold Coast meeting. “The group of attendees was quite broad in industry representation, so we certainly had a wide range of topics discussed from participants in addition to our presenters. The meeting gave us detailed information on concerns and some proposed solutions and suggestions for our representations on behalf of industry.”

These meetings are also a barometer on how we as an Association are doing.” In August, more than 30 attendees, representing more than 20 member businesses from the southeast border region, were at the meeting held at the Oaks Hotel on the Gold Coast.
“We intend to cover as many regions as we can, with the Fraser Coast next on our schedule,” said Ms Dewar. “There will be various staff members and guest presenters in attendance, and it would be great to hear some suggestions from members regarding topics they would like us, or speakers we could engage, to talk about that are relevant to them.”
At that meeting, representatives of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) delivered a presentation on updated regulations and standards - including issues relating to the use of dealer plates, changes to the vehicle standards and safety regulations, the written-off vehicle scheme, changes to modification codes and documentation - and discussed various topics including the road vehicle standards act, changes to compliance plates, and electric vehicle (EV) labels.

Origin Energy is to supply 100 per cent GreenPower for the project, meaning all of the energy required to charge the vehicles will be matched with the equivalent amount of certified renewable energy added to the grid.
The trial aims to highlight there are currently no regulatory barriers to using existing infrastructure that already has power running to it, such as street power poles, and help to understand the impact of EV chargers on the electricity network. If the trial is successful, Intellihub says it aims to pursue a wider rollout of chargers to more local councils on a commercial basis.
OCAL STREET SIDE power poles will be turned into electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in a trial being rolled out across nine local councils in the Sydney and Hunter regions of NSW. 50 street-side locations will be selected for the EV Streetside Charging Project, with each EV charging station to be connected directly to the overhead electricity supply. The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) will provide $871,000 in funding to Australian and New Zealand based utility services company Intellihub for the project.

Ford in Europe is researching another new bit of ADAS tech and is developing headlight technology that will enable information such as directions, speed limits and even weather information to be projected onto the road in front of a vehicle, ensuring the driver can stay focused on the way ahead. Projecting information this way using high-resolution headlights could make driving at night a safer prospect. In the UK, Ford says, 40 per cent of collisions happen in darkness. This risk is increased whenever a driver takes their eyes off the road. A vehicle travelling at 90 km/h covers 25 metres per second, meaning even a short glance at the navigation on the in-car screen can result in “driving blind” for ten metres or more. On an unlit road, this could potentially mean missing an important sign or a bend in the road. This developing headlight technology could provide the driver with information not only about speed requirements, but about changes in weather such as snow falling, fog, slippery conditions, or an icy road ahead and connecting the headlight to the navigation system could display upcoming turns. The width of the vehicle could also be projected onto the road, helping the driver to judge whether the vehicle will fit through a gap or into a parking space.
Systems (ADAS) are a staple feature of new vehicle models. All manner of sensors and instruments are being utilised to make driving safer via features such as blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, parking assist, and the like.

HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP has launched the Boston Dynamics AI Institute, the goal of which is to make advances in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and intelligent machines. Hyundai and Boston Dynamics will make an initial investment of more than $400 million in the new Institute. Hyundai says the Institute will work on developing technology for robots and use it to advance their capabilities and usefulness and focus on four core technical areas: cognitive AI, athletic AI, organic hardware design as well as ethics and policy. In addition to developing technology with its own staff, the Institute plans to partner with universities and corporate research labs. The Institute will be headquartered in the US at Cambridge, Massachusetts and plans are set to hire AI and robotics researchers, software and hardware engineers, and technicians at all levels.

Ford claims projected information could benefit other road users too. One possibility could be showing a path for the driver to follow to ensure cyclists are passed at a safe distance. “What started as playing around with a projector light and a blank wall could take lighting technologies to a whole new level,” said Lars Junker, feature and software, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Ford of Europe. “There’s the potential now to do so much more than simply illuminate the road ahead, to help reduce the stress involved in driving at night. The driver could get essential information without ever needing to take their eyes off the road.” HEADLIGHTS
ERCEDES-BENZ IS WORKING to use end-of-life tyres in its production of components for its vehicles. The company says it is working with German chemicals company BASF and recycling company Pyrum to create plastics from used tyres that can be used for the production of parts such as door handles. Pyrum creates an oil generated from used tyres using its pyrolysis process – a thermal operation that separates components of a tyre – and this oil is combined by BASF with biomethane from agricultural waste. Using both of these materials together, it is possible, the companies say, to create a virgin-quality plastic that has the same characteristics as virgin plastic produced from crude oil. Mercedes-Benz says that this year, the EQE and S-Class will be the first seriesproduction models to be equipped with bow door handles manufactured using plastics sourced in this way. The S-Class will also come with a crash absorber based on this combination of raw materials. Forthcoming models such as the EQE SUV will be equipped with bow door handles made from this plastic as well.

Last year, Mercedes-Benz announced it will be ready to go fully electric by the end of the decade wherever market conditions allow. To reach its target, the company says it needs a total battery production capacity of more than 200 Gigawatt hours by the end of the decade and plans to build eight cell factories worldwide.
“This new state-of-the art European CATL plant in Hungary is another milestone for the scale-up of our EV production together with our key partners,” said Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of MercedesBenz Group AG, CTO responsible for development and procurement, “With CATL we have a technology-leader as our partner to provide us – as the first and biggest customer of the new plant’s initial capacity – with top-notch CO2 neutral battery cells for our next generation EVs in Europe, hence following our local-tolocal approach in procurement. The new factory expands a partnership between MercedesBenz and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) – the Chinese battery company that also works with BMW, Tesla, and VW amongst others – and fits into the German manufacturers Ambition 2039 plan to be CO2-neutral by 2039.
“On our journey to an all-electric future, we are rethinking the composition of all the materials in our vehicles. Every action counts when it comes to conserving resources,” said Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of MercedesBenz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer, responsible for Development and Procurement. “Through close collaboration with our supplier network, we are replacing raw fossil resources with pyrolysis oil made in part from recycled scrap tyres supplied by Mercedes-Benz. Components featuring this technology will enter series production in a number of our models as soon as this year. We anticipate being able to chemically recycle several hundred tonnes of scrap tyres from Mercedes-Benz vehicles every year and use the resulting plastic in our new vehicles. Together with our partners, we are closing the materials loop and actively driving the development of innovative recycling processes.”

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is scheduled to release a discussion paper this month regarding a National Electric Vehicle Strategy – a strategy aimed at improving the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) and improve affordability and choice by growing the EV market locally.
In Europe, where companies can be fined for missing the targets, the current limit, for example, on CO2 emissions for new cars is 95g per kilometre. In Australia, a report from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) in early 2021 showed that CO2 emissions in 2020 were 150g per kilometre for the passenger car and light SUV category.

MOMENTUM FOR THE SWITCH TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES GATHERS PACE
While pure EVs - that is those powered only by batteries - are often the focus around what can be achieved through fuel standards, it is important to recognise that hybrids will play a vital role here.

A central plank of this discussion will be fuel efficiency standards – something that was revealed by Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy, at the nation’s first National Electric Vehicle Summit, held in August. Fuel efficiency standards set an average emission target for manufacturers across the vehicles they sell. This means that while some new vehicles in a manufacturer’s fleet would not necessarily have to meet rigorous emissions standards, the manufacturer must sell enough vehicles that do – such as electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids - in order for its fleet of new vehicle sales to come in, on average, below the standard.
While two per cent of vehicle sales currently are pure EVs, they are forecast to reach 18 per cent of sales by 2030. However, factoring in electrified hybrid and plug-in hybrid sales sees that forecast percentage leap to 76 per cent.
It is argued that manufacturers focus on selling their electrified vehicles into markets where stringent emissions rules apply, ignoring other markets, including Australia, where weaker standards mean they are not required.
"Markets where auto makers face financial consequences for failing to meet targets are prioritised for zero emission vehicles. Volkswagen Group Australia wants binding regulations that compel our factories to consider us. Greater supply inevitably leads to greater affordability."

So why is a move like this important to anyone outside of California, especially as some countries and regions – as well as the federal US Government itself with regards to its vehicle fleet - have made similar announcements?
The truth is that California is big (its population is nearly 40 million), its economy is enormous (its gross domestic product according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, was $US3.5 trillion in 2021 (that’s just over $AU5 trillion, making California’s economy around three times that of Australia), nearly two million cars are sold there each year (about 10 per cent of all sales in the US) and it is the leading State in terms of EV sales (according to the Office of the Governor, more than 250,000 plug-in electric vehicles were sold in 2021, making up more than 12 percent of all light-duty vehicle sales for the year in California.Allthismeans that when California makes a move, other states in the US often follow, obliging companies that want to sell there to make the shift too. We will have to wait and see if such a move will eventuate (politics has a habit of getting in the way of such things) but the momentum continues to grow, at home and abroad, for the EV revolution to pick up speed.

The German manufacturer, which has a rich history in motorsport, has decided to enter the world’s premier racing category as the sport embraces new technical rules aimed at making it more sustainable and cost-efficient. The new rules, which will apply from 2026, focus on greater electrification and advanced sustainable fuel, and Audi will create a specially developed power unit for a racing car. The company will announce a decision on which team they will be lining up with by the end of this year, although there are plenty of rumours suggesting Sauber as the most likely partner. From 2026, the electric power output for the power units - consisting of an electric motor, battery, control electronics, and a combustion engine - will increase sharply compared to the current Formula 1 drive systems. The electric motor will, by then be nearly as powerful as the combustion engine, which has an output of about 400kW (544 hp). The 1.6-litre turbo engines will run on advanced sustainable fuel – also a prerequisite for Audi’s entry into the series.

exterior – it was the first Mazda to be powered by a two-rotor Wankel rotary engine, a type of engine design which Mazda would go on to use in many models through the years. The Cosmo was a ‘halo’ model for Mazda – a model that announced its styling, B ACK IN 1967, Mazda unveiled the Cosmo, a quite beautiful and stylish two-door coupe complete with sweeps and curves that easily rivalled its acclaimed ‘60s European counterparts. The Cosmo also featured something rather special underneath its elegant

rear-wheel-drive Eunos Cosmo had plenty going for it. It had a sleek design that more than hinted at its performance ability, its 2 plus 2 interior was epically luxurious with pillar-to-pillar leather, and it was stuffed full of cutting-edge technology. There were two engine options available – the 1.3-litre, sequential twin-turbo, two-rotor Wankel rotary 13B-RE that developed 175kW/295Nm; and the 2-litre, sequential twin-turbo, three-rotary Wankel rotary 20B-REW that pumped out 224kW and 403Nm. The 20B-REW variant was the world’s first series-production car with a three-rotor rotary engine. Both versions sent power through a 4-speed automatic transmission.The20B-REW variant, when able to stretch its legs, could sprint out to 255km/h, although it was speed-limited to 180km/h for the Japanese market. On the inside, the cabin, though swathed as it was in luxurious materials, was not a stuffy, smoking lounge-type interior. It may have been incredibly comfortable, but there was optional technology to be found here that, more than 30 years later, would still be considered a nice touch. The Eunos Cosmo had a control system that, via a colour touchscreen, enabled control and access to a built-in GPS system (this is 1990 remember), climate control, and other infotainment features such as phone, radio and TV. engineering and technological abilities – and the Cosmo would go through a number of revamps over the decades, morphing from that sleek early sportscar to include a fastback version and a fourdoor model. In 1990 Mazda unveiled the ultimate incarnation of the Cosmo with the fourth generation marketed under the company’s Eunos luxury brand. This was a pretty special car. Built on Mazda’s brand-new JC platform, the BUILT ON MAZDA’S BRANDNEW JC PLATFORM, THE REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE EUNOS COSMO HAD PLENTY GOING FOR IT. Today, it is most definitely a collectible and, perhaps surprisingly in an era when such cars can realise enormous sums at auction, a relatively affordable one – a quick flick through carsales.com.au (at the end of August) revealed three 20B-engine models available, ranging in asking price from $59,000 to $130,000. That is still quite a wedge of cash, of course, but you get plenty for your money and a real slice of automotive history too.

The concept was revealed in March as the Polestar O2, and the company says that bringing it to production is a response to the positive reaction it received.“Withthe overwhelming consumer and press response, we took the decision to put this stunning roadster into production and I am so excited to make it a reality,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “Polestar 6 is a perfect combination of powerful electric performance and the thrill of fresh air with the top down.” The hard-top 2+2 convertible will be built on Polestar’s bespoke bonded aluminium platform. It will be interesting to see how much of the concept’s styling and features will make it into the production variant. While we can expect it to look very similar, the concept included an unusual camera drone accessory – one that Polestar said at the time of the concept’s reveal could be deployed while the car is moving, operate autonomously, and could follow and film the car at speeds up to 90km/h. Sadly, there’s no sign of the drone feature on the Polestar 6 website pages. Those interested in getting their hands on one of the 500 ‘LA Concept’ variants can go to the Polestar site HERE and reserve a build slot for $US25,000 ($AU36,000). Polestar says the price of the car should come in at around the $US200,000 ($AU288,000) mark.

OYOTA AUSTRALIA IS to develop a right-hand-drive (RHD) of the Tundra full-size pick-up truck, with the possibility of this version being available locally in 2024. The company has confirmed an extensive development program in Australia for the Tundra, acknowledging that local experts are to re-engineer the pick-up in a RHD format and evaluate the vehicle against Australian conditions. The company has partnered with Walkinshaw Automotive Group to develop the model. Prototype testing on public roads will begin in September this year and Toyota says that starting from the fourth quarter of 2023, it will deploy around 300 of the Tundra models as part of the final stage of the re-engineering program. The Tundra will be equipped with a new inline hybrid system featuring a twin-turbo 3.5-litre petrol V6. In the United States, the Tundra Hybrid variant delivers 326kW and 790Nm. A UDI’S NEW PERFORMANCE RS 3 model is now available in Australia. Available in two forms – a sedan or sportback hatch – the RS 3 brings plenty of punch and tech to a local sector that recently lost the Ford Focus ST. Powered by an upgraded five-cylinder 2.5 TFSI engine which delivers 294kW and 500Nm, the new RS 3 models sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and top out at 250km/h – enough to keep even the most hardened hot-hatch enthusiast happy. Along with the uprated engine, the RS 3 has a new exhaust system which features a fully variable flap control system for a wider soundscape that can be experienced in the various modes offered by the Audi drive select dynamic handling system. There’s also a new RS torque splitter. It replaces the previous rear axle differential with an upstream multiple disc clutch package. The electronically controlled multiple disc clutch is used on each of the drive shafts that distributes torque between the rear wheels in a fully variable manner. A new RS Performance mode is designed specifically for the racetrack with its own engine and transmission setup, and there’s also an RS Torque Rear mode which makes drifting possible and works by transmitting up to 100 per cent of the engine power to just one of the rear wheels – up to a maximum of 1,750 Nm of torque.

The RS-specific blinking shift indicator in manual transmission mode changes the rpm display from green to yellow to red, blinking in a manner identical to that used in motorsports, to indicate the ideal time to change gears. That system can be used to adapt the engine and transmission characteristics, the torque splitter, steering assistance, the adaptive dampers, and the exhaust flaps,. There’s a sporty flavour to the interior of the RS 3. The standard-equipped 12.3inch Audi virtual cockpit plus displays the revolutions per minute in the ‘RS Runway’ design. The virtual cockpit plus includes displays for g-forces, lap times, and acceleration from 0-100 km/h, 0- 200 km/h, quarter mile, and eighth of a mile.

Available with seating for up to seven people and up to 1710 litre of storage space, the EQB has a 66.5kWh battery and the two-model range starts with the 250 variant, which is has a seven-seat option and which uses a single e-motor, delivering 140kW and 385Nm, to run the front wheels. A range of 371km is claimed. The second variant is the 350 4MATIC which has dual e-motors, a combined output of 215kW and 520Nm, and a driving range of 360km. The EQB can be charged up to 11 kW with an AC charging system, or up to 100 kW using DC charging. Both models in the EQB range incorporate a Type 2 CCS charging socket, while charging cables for use with Australian domestic sockets and public charging stations are also supplied with either vehicle. Standard specs for the range are, as you would expect, very high. A widescreen display features two 10.25inch, high-resolution screens. The driver’s instrument panel can be customised with a number of pre-loaded themes, while the central screen acts as the portal to access the MBUX infotainment system, which includes audio, telephony, and navigation controls as well as a number of vehicle settings. FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said the August result was encouraging. “The August VFacts sales are the best August result since 2017. This gives hope that the supply of vehicles to the Australian market is beginning to show signs of improvement,” Mr Weber said. “We have seen strong sales of battery electric vehicles in August, with Tesla alone selling 3,397 vehicles. In the month, EV sales were 4.4 per cent of the total market. This is the highest market share for pure battery electric vehicles ever recorded in a single month in Australia. Year-to-date EV sales are 2 per cent of the total market, hybrids are 7.6 per cent and plug-in hybrid vehicles are 0.6 per cent. Combined electrified vehicles are now just over 10 per cent of total sales in 2022.”

TOTAL OF 95,256 vehicles were sold in August according to data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). The result is 17.3 per cent increase on the same month in 2021 and brings the 2022 yearto-date total to 717,575. Sales across most States and Territories increased.

Of particular interest was the increase in electrified vehicle sales. 11,639 vehicles that were either battery-powered (BEV), hybrid, or plug-in hybrid, were sold during the month. 4,235 of these were BEVs, with Tesla selling a whopping 3,397 models, according to the data. This number placed Tesla at number seven on the biggestselling manufacturers list.

SALES FIGURES GROW AS ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES SURGE
Queensland increased 11.7 per cent with 21,379 sales; the ACT grew 49.8 per cent (1,410); New South Wales was up 40 per cent (30,501); the Northern Territory 4.2 per cent (816); and Victoria 18.4 per cent (25,053). Sales in the other States decreased with South Australia down 9.7 per cent (5,702); Tasmania down 3 per cent (1,611) and Western Australia down 6.5 per cent (8,784).Toyota led the market with a total of 20,616 vehicles sold. Mazda was next with 8,824 followed by Kia (6,780), Hyundai (6,643) and Mitsubishi (6,380). The Toyota Hi-Lux was the highest selling model with 6,214 sales reported. The Ford Ranger followed with 4,497. Toyota’s RAV4 was next with 2,482 followed by Tesla’s Model 3 (2,380) and Toyota’s Landcruiser (2,379).

1. The agreement indicated Deliveroo had a lack of control over the worker's performance of work including the worker could use any route that he deemed safe and efficient, and he had the right to determine what vehicle he used;
When the matter recommenced, Deliveroo claimed its 2019 "supplier agreement" with the worker comprehensively set out the parties' contractual rights and obligations such that there was no employment. The former worker maintained the agreement demonstrated he was an employee because: he was serving in Deliveroo's business, not his own; Deliveroo exercised a right to control his performance of work once he accepted delivery; and his performance of work was dependent on Deliveroo's business. Also, he said some of the agreement terms were "sham devices" crafted to avoid the relationship being characterised as one of employment, and he’d never clearly been given its delivery time expectations.

Even though Deliveroo exercised "a degree of control" over the worker's performance, the worker "presented himself to the world" as part of Deliveroo's business, and the relationship "was one of personal service", the contract was not for, nor of, employment.
The full bench found that Commissioner Cambridge "erred" in concluding the worker was an employee was meant only in a "formal sense", because "on the common understanding of the law at the time the Commissioner made his decision, his finding was correct". "The consequence of this conclusion is that [the worker] was not a person protected from unfair dismissal... Regrettably, this leaves [him] with no remedy he can obtain from the Fair Work Commission for what was, plainly in our view, unfair treatment on the part of Deliveroo."
Significantly, the full bench explained how it had to "ignore certain realities" about the relationship between Deliveroo and the worker, including • aspects of Deliveroo's 'self-service' booking system gave it a "significant degree of operational control" over its workers; • the worker being encouraged to appear with Deliveroo branded insulation bag, polo shirt, rain jacket and rain pants in return for a $220 bond (and he did so); and • Deliveroo created the various iterations of the contract without consultation, "and it might be inferred that this was done with an eye to maintaining [its] position that the delivery workers were contractors and not employees".

Payments are made in arrears, with the first payment payable to eligible employers three months after commencement, followed by the quarterly payments thereafter.
The Institute has also placed AUR22021 Certificate II in Automotive Accessory Fitting on scope and will begin taking on fee-for-service enrolments later this year. Some preliminary feedback suggests this qualification will be of interest to workshops that have accessory fitting as part of their business model.

We have completed programs in Brisbane and Rockhampton and will also be deploying in Oakey in the upcoming September school holidays.
For the automotive-style painting training, Phoenix attends scheduled days at the MTA Institute workshop. Training with the Institute, whose delivery model for instruction in most cases is on-site at the student’s workplace, has been, Phoenix said, a great experience.
“I’ve always enjoyed working on cars and doing them up, that was my hobby, and I definitely enjoy what I am doing now,” said Phoenix. “And I feel like I am slowly getting better, and I am always looking to improve.

“It is good. Alfio gets to see what we do and how we are progressing, as well as work with us on the modules directly,” he said. “That one-on-one training definitely helps you focus and concentrate more.”
The painting work at Allspec Coatings is a little different from the regular automotive set-up. The trucks are rugged and put through hard work, so the painting is more industrial in nature than the norm, enabling Phoenix to learn different painting techniques, including gravity fed, pressure pot, and airless processes.
The huge facility is where the company - Australia’s largest privately owned waste management company – builds its waste disposal trucks. The trucks, either Scanias or Volvos, arrive at the depot in basic form, without a body or any of the necessary hydraulics or other fitments. Those elements are fabricated and constructed on-site at Yatala, with the body going through the huge Allspec Coatings workshop for sandblasting and painting before being joined to the truck. It really is an impressive set-up.
The Allspec Coatings division numbers four employees, including two apprentices, and working here has given Phoenix the opportunity not only to learn the painting trade, but to get other tickets too, including his forklift and dogman (someone who is qualified to work on moving loads using overhead cranes and hoists) licences. While he has yet to work in the huge sandblasting booth, that also is something he is looking forward to being trained to do.

Richards has given him. “I definitely feel there is a lot they can teach me,” he said. “It’s a huge company and there’s lots going on. I definitely want to progress further here.”
“And there is also the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve made something look that good when its painted,” he added. “That’s especially true of the refurbs that we sometimes get. They can arrive looking pretty bad but then you sand it, get it all painted, and then it looks pretty mint going out.”

The tradition to date has indeed been to find that strapping youngster and sign them up for four years as an apprentice. They learn at your side and attend training until, eventually, you and the Registered Training Organisation are confident that you would trust them to fix your own vehicle unsupervised. That is four years you must retain their interest and passion for the industry before they can begin to earn you serious coin as an unsupervised trade-qualified mechanic.

Jerry first met Scott when Scott was delivering parts. For more than a year, Scott would stop by every afternoon with a van load of parts and a chat about the cars that Jerry was working on. Before long, they were catching up outside of work hours to talk all things cars.
In June 2022, Jerry signed Scott up with the MTA Institute as a first-year apprentice Light Vehicle Mechanic. Most apprentice mechanics clean up the workshop on their first day. The employer gets a solid, reliable apprentice, the apprentice gets a chance to learn new skills and be recognised for their life experience to date, and the Government gets to pay more incentives to see the automotive industry has skilled, trade-qualified technicians on the tools. The Institute delivers the Trade Skills Assessment and Gap Training Program to assist experienced workers in the industry to be recognised for their accomplishments and prior learning. This allows individuals to achieve a trade qualification through a formal assessment of their skills and work experience to date. Eligible candidates may receive a government subsidy to have their trade qualifications recognised, while ineligible candidates can choose to pay for the service directly.
While Jerry is very happy with his new mature-aged apprentice, the question must be asked, is Scott also giggly about being an apprentice? “Very much. This has been my dream since I was a teenager,” he said. “Finally I have an opportunity to get my formal qualifications, I am learning a lot through my MTA Institute training, and I feel proud that everything I have learnt in the industry to date is being acknowledged. Jerry is a fantastic mentor and I really appreciate the faith he has in me.”
The purpose of the summit was to move things toward what the Government’s stated goal ‘to build a bigger, better trained and more productive workforce; boost incomes and living standards; and create more opportunities for more Australians to get ahead and to reach their aspirations.’
VER TWO DAYS at the beginning of September, the Federal Government hosted a Jobs and Skills Summit at which some 150 representatives of employers, industry groups, and unions plus, of course, politicians, discussed the economic challenges facing Australia.

■ More flexibly utilising $575 million in the National Housing Infrastructure Facility to invest in social and affordable housing, and attract financing from superannuation funds and other sources of private capital;
A couple of headline-making takeaways included the proposal to tackle the workforce shortage by initiating a one-off income credit so that Age Pensioners who want to work can earn an additional $4,000 over this financial year without losing any of their pension; and an increase in the permanent Migration Program ceiling to 195,000 (from 160,000) in 2022-23.
■ Amending the Fair Work Act to strengthen access to flexible working arrangements, make unpaid parental leave more flexible and strengthen protection for workers against discrimination and harassment;

Regarding issues with the nation’s workforce, further discussions will be held regarding developing ‘a blueprint to support and grow a quality VET workforce’ and ‘explore options to improve the apprenticeship support system and driveupThecompletions.’migration system will also get further scrutiny. There was discussion around the idea that migration should not simply be about bringing in workers to fill workforce gaps, but about assisting them to put down roots, particularly in country towns and regional areas.
■ Extending visas and relaxing work restrictions on international students to strengthen the pipeline of skilled labour, and providing additional funding to resolve the visa backlog
The Government flagged that many of the ideas coming out of the summit would be explored further as part of the Employment White Paper, aimed at helping to shape the future of Australia’s labour market. It said it will release the terms of reference for the White Paper and begin accepting submissions later this month.Atapress conference following the Summit, Treasurer Jim Chalmers was predictably upbeat about the discussions and the outcomes that had resulted.
Partly with that in mind, the Government committed to expand pathways to permanent residency for temporary skilled sponsored workers, examine the potential for industry sponsorship of skilled migrants, and consider policies to address regional labour shortages and how to improve small business access to skilled migration, amongst other measures.

ASTON MARTIN HAS unveiled its latest concept - the spectacular DBR22. A V12-engined two-seater coach-built design concept, the model celebrates the company’s open-cockpit sports racers and was developed by Aston Martin’s in-house bespoke division, Q by Aston Martin. The company says the DBR22 design concept should form the basis of a production version for a small number of 'Q by Aston Martin' customers and, if that does come to pass, those customers will get something rather special. For a start, they’ll get a very potent machine with power coming from a 5.2-litre V12 Twin-Turbo producing peak outputs of 526kW and 753Nm – power that’s good enough to propel the DBR22 from 0-60mph (96.5km/h) in 3.4sec and on to a top speed of 319kmh. That power is channelled through an 8-speed paddleshift automatic transmission. Styling of the concept is, of course, stunning, with the look inspired by Aston Martin’s long lineage of two-seater open cockpit sportscars such as the DBR1 andUpDB3S.front, this inspiration can be seen in the front grille which incorporates a unique carbon fibre design. The bonnet features a horseshoe vent, recessed to aid airflow from engine that sits beneath it. This long, unbroken bonnet line draws the eye back towards the cockpit, where there is a lowline wind deflector and mirrors mounted to the tops of the doors on carbon fibre arms. The DBR22 sits on new 21-inch alloy wheels featuring a unique 14-spoke design created especially for the concept with a motorsport-derived centre-lock hub. The DBR22’s cockpit makes extensive use of both leather and exposed carbon fibre, with a layout defined by a new dashboard and infotainment displays. Rising from behind the seats are twin nacelles which smooth the airflow behind Aston Martin DBR22
104 | Motor Trader September 2022 the driver and passenger's heads. At the rear, the DBR22 has a horizontal light graphic courtesy of a slim, full-width light bar. Beneath it sits a perforated panel to allow hot air to exit the tail. There’s also an integrated diffuser and pair of large diameter exhaust tailpipes. Aston Martin says that, dynamically, the DBR22 targets ‘true driver connection, with a chassis honed to deliver precision, agility and tactility in equal measure.’ This is achieved through unique front and rear shear panels that increase tortional rigidity, and a bespoke calibration for the adaptive dampers. There’s also a 3D-printed rear subframe – the first time Aston Martin has introduced such a method – with that component made from multiple parts, printed from aluminium, which are then bonded to form the finished subframe. As a bespoke service department, Q by Aston Martin offers a vast range of paint colours and finishes, bespoke graphics, and can use tinted carbons and bespoke materials on both the interior and exterior. That means anyone with pockets deep enough to get their hands on a DBR22 will get something not only rare, but unique.
