ELLO AND WELCOME to the July 2019 edition of Motor Trader. Our cover story this month comes courtesy of Bill Key, an old friend of MTA Queensland who was my predecessor here in the editor's chair at Motor Trader. A real car enthusiast, and classic car owner to boot, Bill had the pleasure of visiting Germany in May to witness the Berlin E-Prix - the 10th round of the 2018-19 season of the all-electric Formula E motor racing series. Established in 2014, the Formula E series has shown that racing electric-powered cars is a truly exciting experience for drivers and spectators alike and might just be an indicator of a future where such racing is the norm.

Motor Trader is the official publication of the Motor Trades Association of Queensland. The role of Motor Trader is to inform members of current issues and legislation affecting the industry. As such it can be regarded as the business magazine for the Queensland motor industry. The role of Motor Trader is not to be in competition with the technical magazines already on the market. It will advise of new vehicles being released and of the latest technology incorporated into them; it will advise of latest technology affecting members in each of the MTA Queensland Divisions; it will keep members abreast of the latest in motor industry training and industrial affairs; and it will keep members informed of the latest technical aids available through MTA Queensland Member Services, which will assist members in staying ahead of the technological revolution presently being encountered within the motor industry. There are some clever concepts around audience participation and point scoring to make things even more interesting and it is, of course (as is all top-level motorsport), a test-bed of sorts in which manufacturers use cuttingedge tech that may well find its way into production road cars. You can read more about the event and the Formula E series from page 18. While our cover feature looks at the sparkling new of Formula E, our Classic Car feature looks at a car that is a deadset stunner even though it is more than 50 years old. The K-code Mustang, owned by Philip McCracken, is a real rarity and a feast for the eyes. Check it out from page 50. As always, we have bags of great stuff in this edition, from the latest in automotive industry and innovation news to a rundown on the Qld government's latest budget and plenty more. I hope you enjoy this month's edition. And if you have any news you'd like to share, or have a classic car, bike or truck you'd like to see featured, then get in contact with me. Cheers! MPLOYERS SEEK TO be members of the MTA Queensland because of what it stands for. The Association’s constitution in its Objects define this as advancing and protecting the interests of the motor vehicle industry; advocating and advancing the interests of employers connected with the motor vehicle industry; and encouraging all forms of education and training supporting the development of the motor vehicle industry and associated trades. These are at the heart of our existence, forming the foundation for the actions as diverse as service delivery, workplace relations and technical advice, advocacy and training in the best interests of our membership. Essential to the actions is their delivery, which pivots on a corporate office of skilled and loyal staff dedicated to achieving the aspirations of the Association and the membership. At a time when society at large demands high standards of transparency and accountability by business and institutions in their operations and customer service obligations, MTA Queensland is ensuring its governance and compliance obligations are of best practice. The 2019-21 Strategic Plan’s Key Strategy One is ‘service excellence’. This demands a
4 | Motor Trader July 2019
high level of corporate office governance and delivery competence. Longevity of staff equal to a tenure of eight years for all staff, indicates understanding of policies, practices, processes and procedures. This alone is not sufficient. Changing corporate social responsibilities and governance requirements demand ongoing learnings and understandings. To provide the ‘service excellence’ required under the Association’s 2019-21 Strategic Plan, Chief Financial Officer Kathy Winkcup and I attended a fiveday Australian Institute of Company Directors course to gain increased understanding of the duties and obligations associated with governance and accountability. Additionally, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) Kellie Dewar, Kathy Winkcup and Marketing and Communications Manager Lysa Dugandzic attended the Australian Society of Association Executives’ (AuSAE) annual AuSAE conference and exhibition. Its focus was on the concepts and mechanisms for organisations and leaders to create a new sustainable future and yet, uphold tradition. Vital to the Association’s ongoing sustainability is membership trust in the ethos of the corporate office and confidence in the delivery of the practices, processes and procedures that comprise the many actions. Trust is an earned trait. It is by maintaining up-to-date and relevant knowledge contributing to sound decision making that trust can be ensured. Globally, there has been a breakdown of trust across government, media, business and non-government organisations. A range of factors have contributed to drive trust nationally to five-year lows: the global financial crisis, the pace
of technological change, the growing impact of automation on the workforce and the banking royal commission.
THE DIARY STATE BUDGET On Tuesday 11 June, the Queensland Budget was delivered. Our pre-budget submission proposed priorities advantageous to the automotive values chain. The good news is that, in general, suggested priorities did emerge in the State Budget. The increase in the payroll tax exemption has been a longterm policy goal and the lift from $1.1 million to $1.3 million for all businesses is welcomed. Introduced too, was a special payroll tax rate of 3.75 per cent (down 1 per cent) for medium-sized regional businesses with a pay roll up to $6.5 million. We were pleased with the training investment of $5.5 million (over three years from 2019-20 to 2021-22) for a Micro-Credentialing Pilot to support industry-led skills development designed to address emerging workforce skills requirements.
of all female apprentices completing their trade in the last 10 years. At a time of significant innovative change in the automotive sector, and a skills shortage, the Association’s objective is to increase opportunities for women and use available Federal and State programs to encourage young female students to consider a career in the motor trades.
IP AUSTRALIA DESIGN SYSTEM REVIEW Earlier in the year, I attended the Queensland University of Technology Symposium regarding designs law and 3D printing. As a follow up, IP Australia sought a meeting to discuss a review of its designs system. The review’s purpose is to better understand the different roles people play in the designs process, the Australian designs industry more broadly and the role of intellectual property within it. I was keen to contribute from the perspective of issues confronting industry with new technologies, 3D printing, safety, and security of the new fleet.

From the desk of the CEO Voortman as the new CEO of AADA (national). James takes over from the respected David Blackhall who held the position from June 2016 and led the Association through a period of disruption. David will continue in an advisory and consultancy role until the end of 2019. On behalf of MTA Queensland I wish both James and David the best in their respective roles. In the coming weeks, meetings have been scheduled with some elected candidates ensuing from the recent Federal poll to discuss training and automotive issues. This follows the letters of congratulations and invitation to visit our corporate office.
CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES A significant achievement for the Association is the finalisation of the Australian Research Council Training Centre Agreement. This relates to the ARC Training Centre for Multiscale 3D Imaging, Modelling and Manufacturing. It is a fiveyear project to be overseen by Professor Mark Knackstedt from the ANU Research School of Physics and Engineering. MTA Queensland considers it to be one of the largest and most exciting projects relevant to the automotive industry.
MTAiQ The MTAiQ hub was established in November 2017 and whilst young, still needs to align with MTA Queensland’s goals and industry requirements. To ensure compatibility with the 2019-21 Strategic
Plan, the MTAiQ’s purpose has been reviewed to emphasise being connected to, engaging and working with members. The new MTAiQ purpose statement is ‘to lead innovation and provide solutions for industry to navigate emerging disruption.’ Coinciding with this, MTA Queensland is delivering a Small Business Digital Champion Project, designed to assist members in going digital.
AND THE LAST THING It is an honour to support Youngcare, MTA Queensland’s chosen charity partner. Recently, I went to Youngcare’s Wooloowin Share House’ 4th birthday, celebrating with all the appropriate trimmings and good wishes. The highlight was the turning of the sod for Stage 2. This is for another innovative share house for young people with disabilities, enabling them to live together in a supported environment that enables choice, individuality and flexibility. Our Cars and Coffee events, held in the car park of our corporate office, support Youngcare. 25 August is the next Cars and Coffee outing. Details are on our website. My priority focus for the next month is the end of the financial year responsibilities and obligations and preparing for the delivery of the new approach detailed in the 2019-2021 Strategic Plan. Until next month, as Henry Ford, the industrialist and founder of the Ford motor company said, ‘execute ideas with enthusiasm . . . as it is the bottom of all progress’.

KELLIE DEWAR DEPUTY GROUP CHIEF EXECUTIVE GENERAL MANAGER MEMBER SERVICES
I
N MID-JUNE I attended the Australian Society of Association Executives’ (AuSAE) annual AuSAE conference and exhibition held in Brisbane at the Convention Centre. Its theme was to explore ‘upholding tradition, creating the future’ and consider how membership organisations and their leaders can take the best of the past and create a new sustainable future. International and national keynote speakers addressed issues as diverse as ‘disruption’ to ‘getting women to the table’. The content of this conference meant much to me: learning from the addresses and creating a framework from which to view our service delivery to the membership. For the majority of my tenure I’ve been engaged with member services and advocacy. I’ve acquired a keen understanding of the meaning of ‘upholding tradition’ and ‘creating the future’ within the MTA Queensland’s architecture. Associations generally have issues in common such as the right membership model for growth, engagement and retention and product development. In addressing these, the proposition is that a strategy clarifies the priorities and inspires everyone to make consistent decisions within a culture of mutual respect. Here at MTA Queensland, we have the Strategic Plan 2019-21. Its value
8 | Motor Trader July 2019
is that it is the signpost to the future, and focuses on basic actions to achieve the future goals supported by a sound business model that includes partners and clients. I’ve initiated actions gained from the conference. In the coming weeks, some practices, processes and procedures will be refreshed to enhance service delivery to members and offset challenges to both the administrative and operating systems. The biggest change in the last decade is of course technology and its application in keeping our members informed. Postage and mail became redundant, replaced with electronic information and communication technology, the function of which is reliant on expert technology and information officers to ensure the messaging to members. The computer operating system is the spine from which information is delivered and is vital to communications with members. It does not and never will replace the inherent culture of service to members, firmly embedded into the Association’s long history. ‘Upholding the tradition’ is reflected in the Strategic Plan 2019-21. Key Strategy 1 is service excellence to the membership underpinned by a range of actions. We are committed to assisting members to make the digital transition in their business. As you would have seen in our recent news, MTA Queensland are one of 15 chosen industry associations announced as a Small Business Digital Champion under the Australian Government initiative to assist small businesses to engage with digital technology. We will bring you videos, news articles, resources, events and workshops to assist you with embracing technology. The first edition of our Digital Champion Newsletter will focus on technology trends and adoption. You can access our growing digital resources for industry on our
website; https://www.mtaq.com.au/smallbusiness-digital-resources/ Although all members will receive digital advice through our Weekly Industry Bulletin, by signing up to the Digital Program you will receive faceto-face advice and additional direct digital communications. Sign up HERE.
ADVOCACY The task of writing to successful election candidates, both House of Representatives and Senate, and to newly appointed Ministers and Shadow Ministers with portfolios relevant to the motor trades has been completed. These letters include an invitation to visit our corporate office and training facility to discuss policy issues. Already, there have been positive responses seeking to visit.
POLICY DISCUSSIONS The Service Station and Convenience Store Association Division (SS&CSA) Chaired by Tim Kane has considered the Department of Natural Resources and Mines Energy’s discussion paper pertaining to the Review of the Queensland Fuels Mandate. The significant issue for the division is the compliance obligations and the associated red-tape. These and other issues will be addressed in a submission in reply to the discussion paper. Also, on the SS&CSA agenda was the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) preliminary decision on the class exemption proposing to allow businesses with less than $10 million aggregated annual turnover to collectively bargain with customers or suppliers. This class exemption relates to collective bargaining – a process that allows competing business such as fuel retailers, to jointly negotiate with customers or supplies over common issues (e.g. terms, conditions and/or prices). A similar proposal was
considered previously by the division, but was not supported. The division is reconsidering the ACCC’s proposal.
WRITTEN OFF VEHICLE MANAGEMENTS REVIEW Written-off vehicles (WOV) has been an ongoing and significant issue for three of our motor trades divisions – Auto Parts Recylers (APRD Chair Lawrie Beacham); Automotive Remarketing (ARD Chair Peter Dever); and National Auto Collision Alliance (NACA Chair Ben Chesterfield). The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is undertaking a consultation process into the management of WOV in Queensland. Part of the review includes seeking feedback on the issues and problems experienced and TMRs management of the process and policy of the WOV. The APRD, ARD and NACA divisions will host the consultation process at the Sir Jack Brabham Automotive Centre of Excellence. It includes a presentation by TMR’s Vehicle Standards team and an open Question and Answer session. A survey questionnaire will be distributed through our weekly newsletter and I encourage participation. The review will cover the issues faced with both light and heavy vehicles; the ideal management of the WOV management by Vehicles Standards; and potential changes to the current scheme.
AUSTRALIAN TAXATION OFFICE (ATO)ALERTS MOTOR VEHICLE RELATED EXPENSES In the coming financial year, the ATO has advised that motor vehicle related expenses and dry cleaning will be closely scrutinised. Motor vehicle related expenses are one of biggest deductions people claim in their tax returns. In the 2017-18 financial year, more than 3.6 million people made work-related car expenses totalling $7.2 billion. The ATO assistant commissioner July 2019 Motor Trader | 9
Policy/Viewpoint warned motorists to be careful when lodging work-related motor vehicles expenses in their 2018-19 tax returns. Over-claiming will be detected and if it is deliberate penalties will apply. The ATO advises that there are two ways for taxpayers to make car expense claims: • Charging cents per kilometre at a set rate of 68 cents per kilometre. Receipts are not needed for claims up to 5000 kilometres. • Using a logbook based on the percentage of work for car use and the actual expenses. A logbook must be kept for a minimum continuous period of 12 weeks. Receipts to claim fuel costs can be used or to estimate expenses based on odometer readings. • Keep records to prove to prove the claim. THE BLACK ECONOMY The ATO has warned that from 1 July 2019, unreported ‘cash in hand’ payments made by employers to employees that do not comply with pay-as-you-go withholding obligations will not be tax deductible. In addition, payments made to contractors where the contractor does not provide an Australian Business Number and the business does not withhold any tax will be scrutinised. The new rules intend to be fairer on businesses that do the right thing whilst targeting the ‘black economy’ or in other words economic activity which is unrecorded and untaxed. The Black Economy Taskforce estimated that the black economy costs the community as a much as $50 billion per year or approximately 3 per cent of Gross Domestic Product.
ISMAA MENTORING The end of financial year also brings to a close the opportunity to sign new students to the Industry Specialist Mentoring for Australian Apprentices program for Automotive. We will continue to support all current students throughout Queensland under the requirements of the contract until the end of this calendar year. The Industry Specialist Mentoring for Australian Apprentices (ISMAA) program aims to increase apprentice retention rates, particularly in the first two years of training, improve completion rates and support the supply of skilled workers in industries undergoing structural change. The feedback from participants and workplaces has been very positive but also highlights an ongoing need for continued industry apprentice support.
FINALLY Whilst considering sombre issues, a timely alert into my inbox advises that whilst late model vehicles are increasingly being stolen in home burglaries in Australia, it is the older model vehicles being targeted for their ease of theft. In Victoria, the Nissan Pulsar N15 (manufactured between 1995 and 2000) has been the top theft target since 2014, with thefts rising exponentially over the past 10 years. In Queensland, car thefts since 2015 have increased by 47 per cent. During 2018, there was a rise of 13 per cent in car crimes across the State. It is estimated that vehicle crime last year cost $131 million. Until next month, take care and stay safe.

Small change. Big future. Matthew Webster (46) has a long way to go before he hangs up his hat, but he can already picture his retirement. He plans to travel around Australia in a caravan with his wife — once he convinces her that it will be fun! Matt has spent his career in the motor trades and is well on his way to making sure he has enough super to see the country in comfort. He joined MTAA Super as an apprentice in 1989 and now works in an automotive training role in NSW. “I’m really happy I’ve been with MTAA Super. It’s the industry super fund for my trade and has been supporting careers in the automotive industry for over 25 years.” “I’m still a long way off retirement, but I do think about what I will do when I stop working and how I will support myself and my family.”
Matt, like many Australians, is not alone in his concern. Thanks to changing work patterns and increased life expectancy, many of us will spend close to a quarter of our lives as retirees. For some, the age pension alone or relying solely on your employer’s super contributions may not be enough. Leeanne Turner, CEO of MTAA Super, says it’s important that workers do what they can to help grow their super throughout their working lives. “Too many workers are hands-off with their super. Retirement can feel like a lifetime away, so it’s easy to put super on the back burner. But there are a lot of ways you can actively grow your super now.” She says one of the easiest and most effective ways is to make regular extra contributions.
“Small amounts can go a long way. Putting as little as an extra $10 per week into your super can add up to thousands over a 30+ year career.” “This is because of the compounding nature of superannuation. With super, you don’t just grow your employer and voluntary contributions, you also grow the investment returns on these contributions. Every dollar you add to your super account boosts your super’s earning capacity.” Ms Turner also adds that making extra contributions is easy. “It’s simple. Just ask your employer to set up a regular (pre-tax) salary sacrifice into your super, or make direct (after-tax) deposits into your super whenever you can afford to put a little aside.”

Leigh Holman
MTA|Q&A
When someone is a car enthusiast, it is evident in every facet of their life. From their hobbies to their choice of home dĂŠcor, they make cars a part of their life. Leigh Holman is such a car enthusiast. His house is decked out with black, white and red furniture and chrome fittings that remind you of racing. On weekends, he is either behind the wheel of his turbocharged Subaru at the drag strip or supporting his local speedway. On weekdays he is on the tools and running the show at SVS Auto and Dyno in Cairns working on the cars he loves to build. WORDS: LARA WILDE

SVS Auto Repairs, Cairns
LW: On my first visit to your workshop I was amazed by the diversity of cars your customers have. There were old school muscle cars, fully optioned four-wheel drives and generic daily drivers. Tell us about the products and services offered by SVS Auto and Dyno? LH: The list of products and services we
offer is almost endless. SVS Auto and Dyno provides a very wide range of services beginning at general car and four-wheel drive servicing, general repairs and more serious repairs such as major engine and driveline repairs and rebuilds. We are a specialist dyno tuning centre concentrating on, but not limited to, fourwheel drive diesel engines. We also offer a large range of parts and accessories.
“SVS AUTO AND DYNO HAS
BEEN OPERATING IN CAIRNS FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS. WE HAVE BEEN AT OUR PRESENT LOCATION IN THE INDUSTRIAL AREA OF BUNGALOW FOR ALMOST EIGHT YEARS.” LW: When I talk cars to people in Cairns, the name SVS Auto and Dyno comes up in conversation frequently. How long has SVS Auto and Dyno been established? LH: SVS Auto and Dyno has been operating in Cairns for more than 30 years. We have been at our present location in the industrial area of Bungalow for almost

eight years. We were at our previous address for 20 years. This is our fourth location since we started due to our growth.
LW: Your passion for cars can’t be denied. What is your background in the automotive industry? LH: I have been into cars and mechanical things since I was a boy. Inevitably, I became a motor mechanic. Then, in July 1984, I began to build my own business. I think I have always been a better motor mechanic than a businessman.
LW: Working on a business is different to working in a business. Do you spend all of your time focussing on managing the business or are you still hands on with the tools today? LH: Running the business certainly takes up a lot of time and energy but yes, I do
14 | Motor Trader July 2019
“IT IS A CONSTANTLY
CHANGING INDUSTRY. IN CAIRNS ALONE THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 200 MOTOR MECHANIC WORKSHOPS, SO WE HAD TO FIND A WAY OF MAINTAINING OUR POSITION AT THE FRONT.” love to get into the workshop. I love to build engines and I am constantly helping out with problem diagnosis.
LW: With so much on your plate you must have a staff of exceptional people to make the business hum. Who is your current team at SVS Auto and Dyno? LH: I am very happy with our team. We have had as many as 13 in the shop, but
presently we are at 10 - three in the office and seven in the workshop.
LW: The first time I met you was at Springmount Raceway where you were making some excellent times down the quarter mile with your Subaru. What role does the heavily branded SVS Auto and Dyno drag racing car play in your marketing activities for the business? LH: Ah the “Subi”. It was our parts chaser,
but our young staff members were not legally able to drive the turbocharged car so, just for fun, we turned it into a drag car. The success of the Subaru has been noticed and yes, we do get some work from it. But really, it’s just there to satisfy the revhead in me.
LW: You are an active member of the local BNI (Business Network International) group in Cairns.
How effective have you found networking as a marketing and referral tool to attract new business? LH: BNI has been truly amazing for SVS Auto and Dyno and for me personally. The business generated, and friendships formed, from developing strong meaningful relationships with like-minded businesspeople has been fantastic. I encourage any business owners to take a look into networking and in particular, BNI.
LW: With more than 30 years in business you must be used to planning for the next phase. What are your plans for SVS Auto and Dyno for the next few years? LH: It is a constantly changing industry.
In Cairns alone there are approximately 200 motor mechanic workshops, so we had to find a way of maintaining our position at the front. With so many four-wheel drive vehicles these days, we are presently

turning our attention to the four-wheel drive upgrade and accessory market. We have been fitting out four-wheel drive vehicles for many years, but using the products sold by other retail suppliers makes it difficult to “Win the job”. To address this issue we have secured a range of simply amazing products unique in Cairns to SVS Auto and Dyno, such as Dobinson’s spring and suspensions, Dobinson’s range of accessories, LOVELLS GVM, GCM, BTC upgrades, Legendex Performance and off-road accessories, Stedi LED Lighting, UNICHIP, Safari Armax, and many other quality Australian products.
LW: Managing a successful business can be all consuming. What do you do with your spare time? LH: I am an avid car enthusiast. I love playing around with my project cars (I have a few), I like to cycle, motorcycle, dine out and enjoy the outdoors.
LW: After 30 years in the mechanic business you must have learnt a lot of hard lessons. 16 | Motor Trader July 2019
“THE INDUSTRY HAS
GONE THROUGH MASSIVE CHANGES . . . I SUGGEST THAT A YOUNG MECHANIC SHOULD SPECIALISE IN ONE AREA. BECOME THE BEST YOU POSSIBLY CAN IN ONE AUTOMOTIVE SYSTEM.” What advice would you give to a young Leigh Holman starting out in the industry? LH: The industry has gone through
massive changes since I began my journey. Whilst I pride myself on my broad knowledge and “have a go at anything” attitude, I suggest that a young mechanic should specialise in one area. Become the best you possibly can in one automotive system. Lara Wilde is a writer, motorsport commentator and car enthusiast from northern Queensland. TRIC RACING REVOLUTION
July 2019 Motor Trader | 19
Racing at Tempelhof Airport, Berlin
In 2014, a new motorsport racing series, Formula E, made its debut on the world stage. This was different from the norm. Something unique. There were no V8s or turbos here, no high-grade racing fuels, no replacement engines stored at the back of the pit lane garages. Here, the cars that tore around the Beijing street circuit were powered by electricity and a revolution in motorsport had begun. Five years on, Formula E is still charging along and in May the series landed in Berlin for the 10th round of the 2018-19 season. Bill Key, former editor of Motor Trader, was there to experience this special motorsport event. WORDS: BILL KEY 20 | Motor Trader July 2019

UILT IN THE 1930s, Tempelhof Airport is, at first thought, an unlikely venue for an all-electric motor racing championship. But that is exactly where I found myself at the end of May, as futuristic Batmobile-looking Formula E race cars reached speeds of up to 280km/h on the tarmac of the now closed Berlin airport. Tempelhof Airport was once one of the largest buildings on earth and with its grandiose architecture and checkered history it provided a dramatic backdrop for Round 10 of the worldwide ABB FIA Formula E Championship. So, what is Formula E? Before I was invited to Germany by
Michelin Australia, I had little knowledge of this new-kid-on-the-block racing event. I Googled it, I watched YouTube videos, and I discovered the high-profile names that piloted these amazing cars . . . my curiosity was piqued. After experiencing it first hand, plug me in and charge me up, I’m a convert to this all-electric, highly competitive form of ‘motor’ racing! It was in 2011 that the idea for an allelectric street racing series had its genesis. In a restaurant in Paris, FIA President Jean Todt and Spanish businessman Alejandro Agag scribbled on a napkin the original idea for the world's first all-electric international single-seater championship. July 2019 Motor Trader | 21
After that fateful meeting, the two businessmen further developed the idea into a championship series as a means to demonstrate the potential of sustainable mobility to help create a better, cleaner world and provide competitive and entertaining racing. Three years later, in 2014, Formula E had its debut in in the grounds of the Olympic Park in Beijing.
THE SERIES
With 11 teams and 22 drivers on the grid for its fifth season, the Championship has grown into a global event with some of the world’s best motorsport teams and talent. Nissan, Jaguar, DS, Mahindra, Audi and BMW are just some of the big names

already competing, and with Mercedes and Porsche both entering next year with factory teams, it will be one of the few series to have the big four German manufacturers competing against each other. All-electric-powered cars are not the only point of difference in Formula E. In fact, there are few similarities between it and traditional motorsport series. Three-time Le Mans winner, former F1 driver and current Formula E Team Principal for Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler, Allan McNish explains: “It doesn’t compare, it is a complete mind switch, as a driver, as a team principal, as an engineer . . . everything. “Formula E and the reason we are in it, is because it is different. “It’s all electric, it’s in city centres and it’s

As part of that entertainment angle, Formula E is the only event in the world that lets fans play an active role in influencing the outcome of the race. A feature called Fanboost gives fans the opportunity to vote for their favourite driver and award them an extra boost of power during the race. The five drivers who receive the Fanboost are awarded a significant burst of power, which they can deploy in a five-second on roads that you can’t predict. window during the second half of the race. “It is also a formula where they adapt the Fans can vote for their favourite driver rules to ensure that teams don’t run away in the six days prior to, and leading with the championship, to make sure CLICK TO up to 15 minutes into, each race. that it is entertainment. off the racing line and through the Activation Zone. Here they can collect an extra 25kW of power. Drivers that secure the extra speed, can use it for a few laps when they want to race harder, giving them the edge to keep ahead of the competition. The finer details of Attack Mode for each race are decided by the FIA one hour before the race, meaning the teams and drivers only have 60 minutes to decide the race strategy. I told you it was different, and it appeals to a different sort of fan. Carrera Cup Australia driver Jordan Love was with me in Berlin. He and his mates fall into the age demographic that Formula E are targeting and he was impressed with what he saw. “The whole event, with music, DJs and bands playing, the food trucks and all the different activities make it so easy to get into it, not only with what’s happening on the track but at the whole event. There are simulators everywhere, so the gaming

aspect really appeals to people,” he said. “I think the fact that they can hold these races in the middle of cities really opens it up to new fans. It’s easy for people to get to, so you don’t have to just be a diehard fan to travel a long way to experience live racing. You can come along for a day, see the race and enjoy all the festival atmosphere. It would be great fit for Australian sport fans.” The series is truly global, with 13 races in 12 cities covering five continents. And again, the locations have very little in common with traditional racing. Apart

A global motor racing series, Formula E is finding success across the world. Australia will, hopefully, be a stop for a future season
from the glamour of Monaco and the colour of Mexico, the other cities hosting the street racing series are new to this form of entertainment. Ad Diriyah in Saudi Arabia, Marrakesh, Santiago, Hong Kong, Sanya in China, Rome, Paris, Berlin, Bern and New York make up the race calendar. Sam Bird, in the Envision Virgin Racing team car finished in 9th spot in Berlin
It has to be asked - what about Australia? McNish was adamant with his reply. “Absolutely. Eventually we have to go to every corner of the globe. Australia is motorsport friendly and we know you can put on a fantastic show. At the moment it is not on the calendar but I’m very sure at some point in the close future it is going to be. And when it is, it will be fantastic.”
THE CARS
They look amazing and have the performance and power that many combustion engines would love, but let’s face it, where is the noise? The thunderous V8 roar or turbo scream synonymous with traditional motor racing is not there. And, you know something . . . it doesn’t matter. Instead, fans experience a futuristic whine - for Star Wars fans, it’s a cross between a X-Wing star fighter in full flight and a lightsaber duel. If you happen to be standing on the bridge that spans the main straight as 22 of these high-voltage cars speed beneath you, let me tell you, there is a noise and it is impressive. July 2019 Motor Trader | 25
Impressive too are the stats for the Gen2 car. 0-100kmh in 2.8 seconds, top speed of 280kmh, and 250kW, or 335bhp. These figures are big improvements from Gen1 and proves how fast the technology is advancing in the series. The most notable change is the battery which, interestingly, is supplied by McLaren. The Gen2 car now has double the energy storage capacity of the Gen1, which stops the necessity for drivers to make mid-race car swaps. The power is also increased by 50kW. All teams must use the same chassis, tyres and battery. Each team can develop and design their own powertrains. This includes the inverter, the motor and the transmission, and the secrecy surrounding these Serge Grisin, manager of Michelin Motorsport’s Formula E program elements are closely guarded by teams to try and gain that bit of extra performance over their rivals. All teams use the Michelin Pilot Sport all weather tyre, specifically designed for the demands of electric street racing. There are no tyre changes due to weather, so drivers need to adjust their driving style to suit the conditions. It is perhaps the tyre technology used in the series that has one of the biggest benefits to the everyday street driving car. “For Michelin, this Championship is a really important commitment. It is important to us to be involved in Formula E, we have worked non-stop to competitions that make sense in terms improve the tyre and technology.” of messages and rules, and how the With only two sets of tyres available competition is helpful to us to develop to each car for the entire weekend, the better tyres for the future and better financial, sustainability and logistical mobility for the future. road-going vehicles. They consequently have a direct impact on the distance electric cars can travel. In the world of electric vehicles, low rolling resistance tyres allow longer distances to be covered between battery charging stops. When the Pilot Sport EV2 was introduced for Formula E’s third campaign in 2016/17, it was calculated that it would have enabled the previous season’s cars to complete an extra lap with the same technology package. The new Michelin Pilot Sport continues to drive this progress and apart from its coloured sidewalls, the Pilot Sport could almost be mistaken for a mass-production tyre. Because of its 18-inch interior diameter – a first in the world of singleseater racing – and patterned tread, it wouldn’t look remotely out of place on a standard road car. The size and tread pattern also means that the data Michelin is able to collect at E-Prix meetings is fed directly into the development of the firm’s future road tyres.
There is no doubt the latest Gen2 Formula E cars look the business, and the design team at Spark Racing Technology have been responsible for creating a car that ‘does not look like any other formula racing car.’ “We believe we have succeeded in designing a car that, when you see it, you know immediately is a Formula E car,” said Pierre-Alain Michot from Spark. Although people make comparisons with the Batmobile, the original inspiration came from a different highperformance vehicle. “The first inspiration for the design was the F22 fighter plane. If you look, you can see some similarities in the design around the rear wings,” said Michot. Most of the downforce on these cars comes from the underfloor, with the huge diffuser providing grip even when behind another car. “We have much lower downforce than F1 cars, which is why there is no big single rear wing. A lot of the bodywork is designed to reduce turbulence to the car behind and provide close racing.” July 2019 Motor Trader | 27
THE RACE
In keeping with the different nature of Formula E, the race format is also something new to get your head around. The race, or E-Prix, begins with a standing start and lasts for 45-minutes. At the end, once the 45 minutes are up and the leader has crossed the finish line, there's still one more lap to go until the race finishes. For a traditional motorsport fan, it is a system that is weird to understand at
“THE RACE, OR E-PRIX, BEGINS WITH A STANDING START AND LASTS FOR 45-MINUTES. AT THE END, ONCE THE 45 MINUTES ARE UP AND THE LEADER HAS CROSSED THE FINISH LINE, THERE'S STILL ONE MORE LAP TO GO UNTIL THE RACE FINISHES.”
first - referring to minutes and seconds of the race as opposed to laps - but with all the little extras like Attack Mode and Fanboost, there is no denying it is an entertaining format to watch. Formula E follows a standard points system, as used in other FIA-sanctioned series - awarding points to the top-10 finishers. The driver starting on pole picks-up an extra three points, while the driver who sets the fastest lap during the race receives one additional point. However, the driver must finish in the top 10 places to gain the Fastest Lap extra point. If not, then the driver in the top 10 with the next fastest lap takes the honour. The majority of races take place over a single day in order to minimise disruption to the host city. However, where possible, some events stretch to two days with double the amount of action. These are referred to as double-headers. Before the race itself there is a shakedown session to check electronics and reliability, with the cars’ power reduced to 110kW. Lucas di Grassi of the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team was victorious at the Berlin E-Prix
There are then two practice sessions with full power available followed by qualifying and a super pole shootout. To further add to the entertainment, the qualifying session lasts one hour and sees drivers divided into four groups of up to six cars, defined by their position in the championship. Each driver has six minutes to set their best time, with the top-six drivers proceeding to the Super Pole shootout in a bid to secure pole position. During the Super Pole shoot-out, the drivers go out one-by-one, with the sixth fastest driver from the group stages going out first.
THE FUTURE
Many people told me over the weekend that ‘Formula E is a global entertainment brand with motorsport at its heart.’ This is obviously the corporate line, but it actually seems to be true. As an event person, I was as impressed with the whole set
up. The E-village with funky food trucks to cater for the thirsty and hungry, and first-class fan interactions that provided very good off-track activities to keep the punters entertained - DJs, bands, racing simulators all added to the buzz. The ever-present messaging of sustainability and innovation provides a platform for the big corporate names who want to be associated with clean and clever strategies for the future. And the lack of loud engines screaming past every few minutes is an obvious plus for those corporates discussing deals during the race. It’s this clever partnering and event management that is obviously helping Formula E stake it’s claim in the motorsport arena, targeting new fans in new cities with a new form of racing. I personally hope we see an CLICK TO Australian race added to the FIND OUT MORE ABOUT calendar sooner rather than FORMULA E later, this is the future lining up on the E grid and we don’t want to be left in the pits.

MTAQ Racing
MTAQ RACING TEAM INCHING CLOSER TO FIRST VICTORY
T
HE MTAQ RACING team returned from the 2nd round of the Hyundai X3 Queensland championship at Warwick’s Morgan Park Raceway on June 29-30 and it was, once again, a weekend of mixed results. While pleasing overall, the gremlins of bad fortune once again made an appearance, scuppering what was building up to be one of the most successful meetings for the youngteam. A cracking qualifying session saw driver David Wood pilot the speedy Excel to 2nd spot on the grid and, in doing so, break the lap record (a time subsequently bettered by the pole sitter). That represented a fantastic 1.1 second improvement on the team’s previous best at the track.
This tremendous improvement was a reflection of the hard work put into the development of the car and the qualifying result was a big confidence builder going into Race One. That confidence was well placed as David posted a 2nd place finish – equally the team's best ever result. “We didn't quite have enough race pace to run with the winner, our good friend Cam Wilson,” said David. “But we had a comfy gap back to the field and it was a straightforward race for us.” Race Two started as well as Race One had finished, with David pushing hard to catch the leader. But then the gremlins made their appearance. “Race Two was looking to be a copy of Race One until we had a problem with a fuel pump failing at mid distance,” said David. “This was a new fuel pump, so to have it fail was very frustrating. It wouldn't pump half a tank of fuel and we had to limp home with a crippled car and we ended the race 18th.” Sunday’s Race Three and Race Four were ding-
dong affairs. With the fuel pump issue fixed, the car was back to its best but starting from 18th in Race Three meant David was in for a real battle to get anywhere near the front of the pack. “We were able to tear through to 7th, but that was about as high as we could get. We got another 7th placing in Race Four after some of the most intense racing we have had in Excels to date,” he said. “The problem is that when you get back into the front group, the cars are so closely matched that even with a few tenths of a second of pace over your opponent, it is very hard to pass at Warwick. So, we had speed but got caught in the battles and this underscored the importance of qualifying and starting at the front.” Overall, the MTAQ Racing team scored 7th place for the weekend’s competition. A respectable result, but with the knowledge that the car is an absolute belter when everything works as it should, there was a tinge of disappointment. “We have been able to improve our championship position from 15th to 9th, but this wasn't reflective of our true speed and potential,” said David. “Without that fuel issue we should have had at least four 2nd placings, and maybe challenged for the win in Races 3 and 4. “It is slightly disappointing, but I am really buoyed by the fact that we have had our best qualifying and race finish, and we also broke the track record - these things we can take away from the meeting with a great deal of satisfaction. “Another pleasing aspect is that we have
“ . . . I AM REALLY BUOYED
BY THE FACT THAT WE HAVE HAD OUR BEST QUALIFYING AND RACE FINISH, AND WE ALSO BROKE THE TRACK RECORD - THESE THINGS WE CAN TAKE AWAY FROM THE MEETING WITH A GREAT DEAL OF SATISFACTION.” been getting a great deal of quiet applause from our peers in the pit lane” he added. “It is obvious that we don't have the resources some of the other teams do, but what we do put in the effort, make the absolute most of what we have, and try very hard. People see that even when we get knocked down with bad luck we don't sook but rather just dig in, keep trying and keep fronting up, keep thinking of the next tweak, and trying our best. “It is humbling when your competitors openly acknowledge this and admire you for it, especially in a class that is so intense. “The winning car on the weekend, July 2019 Motor Trader | 35

Now, ACM Parts is expanding that choice again. The business has added a new automotive parts search functionality to its website, allowing customers to search
and browse through more than 100,000 new and recycled automotive parts online for the specific item they need. “Consumer choice is paramount – it’s important to us that our customers can find the parts they want, in a way that works for them,” Mr Jones said. “ACM Parts’ customers can order all the automotive parts they need with one phone call, an email, or a few clicks of the mouse on our website or eBay store. It’s convenient, cuts down on delivery times, and means repairers can deliver better and faster for their customers.” As well as passenger vehicles, the business also stocks a large range of 4x4 and commercial vehicle parts. Mr Jones said the business has focused on creating one of the biggest inventories

This means they can select all the parts at once and don’t have to go back and forth for paperwork – yet another way we’ve managed to cut down on waiting times for parts.” Once the parts are ready to be delivered, ACM Parts’ twice-daily delivery service sees seven trucks – part of a fleet of 30-plus vehicles – busy delivering orders around the state. of automotive parts in Australia. An Eye on Innovation and many other sectors, the effect on traditional businesses - from the small, family-run, two-hoist workshop to the very biggest of corporate giants - will be very tough indeed. For all businesses, now is the time to be thinking about the future and how to adapt to the disruptions that are on the way. KATHY WINKCUP CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER GENERAL MANAGER INNOVATION
T
HE NEWS IN the automotive world continues to be a mix of stories reagarding incredible advances in technology and stories of adapting to those developments as well as a demanding market. Last month, that was highlighted by the news from Ford that while it is to launch new models in Europe and that every new Ford passenger vehicle nameplate will include an electrified option, at the same time it will be introducing efficiencies that will see the closure of some of its engine and transmission manufacturing plants in Europe. Reportedly, some 12,000 jobs will be impacted. Clearly, this is not happy news, but it is, perhaps, an indication of what the industry faces moving forward. The need to invest heavily in new technologies such as electric cars and autonomous tech has to have an impact somewhere along the line. It is what drove the proposed link-up between FCA and Renault, what drives the partnerships between the big players in general, and is likely, at least in part, behind Ford's move. This is not the last time we will probably hear of such news. As new technologies come on line, including in products (think EVs), manufacturing processes (think 3D printing) sales (think online services),

OUT AND ABOUT June was another busy month for the MTAiQ team as we continue to establish relationships and contacts across the innovation and start-up landscape. In mid June, we attended an Activator Launch held by SheEO, an organisation that supports female innovators. Held on the Gold Coast, the event gave an insight into how the organisation is working to change the landscape for female entrepreneurs. Their model brings together 500 women (Activators) in each cohort who contribute $1100 each in what is called an Act of Radical Generosity. The money is pooled together and loaned out, at 0 per cent interest, to five women-led ventures. That loan is paid back over five years and the money is then loaned out again, creating a perpetual fund. Fascinating stuff. Also on this month's agenda was the Start-up Redlands Pitch Comp, held on June 19, which saw start-ups pitch their ideas and concepts to a judging panel of Redlands CLICK Angel Investors. Like many TO SUBMIT YOUR IDEA such events held across the TO MTAIQ state, this is a fantastic way for start-ups, innovators, entrepreneurs and investors to meet and collaborate. Toward the end of the month, INNOV8 Logan held a meeting to discuss Onshoring by design, competing successfully
“THE IDEA OF COMBINING
CONCEPTUAL AND REAL INNOVATIONS WITH TANGIBLE SOLUTIONS THAT HELP BUSINESSES TO ADAPT AND EVOLVE IS CENTRAL TO WHAT WE DO.” against low-cost nations. Special guest was Ty Hermans, founder of the design-led manufacturer Evolve Group, who aims to win $400million of production back to Australia over the next decade. With manufacturing a crucial component of any nation's economic vibrancy, this was an interesting story to hear. Two other events definitely worth mentioning were the Hololens 2 event at which MTAiQ member Immerse Enterprise was present. A monthly event, the gathering of the Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) community looks at the latest developments in the VR and AR landscape – an area that is sure to play an important role in auto manufacturing, training and retail in the coming years, The other event of which to take note was the 2019 International Education and Training Summit: Changing the Narrative, held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre at the end of the month. Paul Kulpa, GM of the MTA Institute, was there at an event that explored issues relating to international education and training in Queensland. The annual IET Summit brings together industry and partners such as local government, tourism, community and business, to plan future activities and projects and initiatives for the future. We all know how key training and education is to the future of the automotive industry, so having a voice at a forward-looking event such as this is crucial.
GOT AN IDEA? LET US KNOW! At MTAiQ, Australia's first automotive
industry-focused innovation hub, we aim to be a leading voice in the innovation landscape and a muscular contributor to conversations around new concepts and ideas concerning mobility and the future of our industry. However, as important as that mission is, it is also our aim to assist industry and businesses that exist today to respond to the disruptions that are beginning to be felt and which will only grow over the next few years. The MTAiQ and MTA Queensland are constantly working on initiatives that can help members and the wider automotive industry community navigate this disruption. Examples of this would be in our delivery of hybrid/EV training courses through the MTA Institute, the delivery of the Small Business Digital Champion Project, our investment in fledgling businesses, and our partnerships with other associations and organisations that are similarly committed to our industry. This idea of combining conceptual and real innovations with tangible solutions that help businesses to adapt and evolve is central to what we do. With that in mind, I encourage those of you out there who have an idea, a plan, a kernel of a concept, to think hard about what it can deliver to the automotive community, and then get in touch with us. It could be a new product, a new piece of software, a new way of doing business or perhaps the adaptation of something that already exists and that makes it better. Whatever it may be, we can help develop it into something that, just maybe, could make a real difference to the industry. So, if you have an idea, let us know. As Shiv Nadar, Indian billionaire and tech entrepreneur said: "Adaptability and constant innovation is key to the survival of any company operating in a competitive market." I look forward to hearing from you. Until next time. July 2019 Motor Trader | 43

OLKSWAGEN IS ENTERING the car sharing sector with WeShare – a ‘free-floating’ system operated digitally via an app. Launched in Berlin in June with 1500 e-Golf vehicles, the WeShare will be a 100 per cent electric fleet and, VW says, all the vehicles will be operated on green power. They are to be followed by 500 additional e-up! vehicles at the beginning of next year and the first units of Volkswagen’s new full-electric ID.3 when it is
introduced in mid-2020. An expansion of WeShare, initially to Prague and then to Hamburg, is planned for 2020. Customers will need to have a smart phone and credit card, to be at least 21 years old, to have held a driving licence for at least one year and to be registered at an address in Germany. branches of food retailers Lidl and Kaufland. Following the launch of the system, the WeShare vehicles will be collected and charged by WeShare service employees when the battery level is low. In later operation, users will receive incentives for recharging vehicles themselves. VW says the number of car sharing users in Germany has risen 14-fold since 2010. Only about 180,000 people were registered as car sharing users in 2010 and the number had grown to 2.46 million by the beginning of this year. “With WeShare, we have tailored car sharing to meet the needs of users: easy to use with 100 per cent electric operation on green power,” said Christian Senger, Volkswagen Board Member for Digital Car & Services. “With such a consistent, broad offering, we stand out from the competition. We are outstandingly wellpositioned to participate in the expanding car sharing market.”
HONDA E PLATFORM AND BATTERY DETAILS UNVEILED HONDA HAS ANNOUNCED the details of the chassis, battery and charging details for the Honda e compact electric car - the first Honda to be built on a dedicated EV platform. The car will feature a watercooled 35.5 kWh Lithium-ion highcapacity battery that can be charged using either Type 2 AC connection or a CCS2 DC rapid charge with at-a-glance LED indication of charging status. The company says that with a full range of over 200km, the fast-charge capability will deliver exceptional usability to meet the demands of everyday commuting providing 80 per cent charge in 30 minutes. The e platform has been developed with a specific focus on urban environments. With the battery positioned centrally at a low level within the wheelbase under the floor of the car, the result is a 50:50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity. Power from the high-torque electric motor is delivered through the rear wheels. Honda’s compact electric car is a key part of the brand’s latest electrification commitment to feature electrified technology in 100 per cent of its European sales by 2025. EMC will be complemented by the recently announced Battery Assembly Centre near Birmingham, in supplying electrified powertrain systems to Jaguar Land Rover’s global vehicle plants. BMW and Jaguar say the agreement will enable both companies to take advantage of efficiencies arising from shared research and development and production planning as well as economies of scale from joint procurement across the supply chain. A team of Jaguar Land Rover and BMW Group experts will engineer the EDUs with both partners developing the systems to deliver the specific characteristics required for their respective range of products.
BRIDGESTONE INTRODUCES ENLITEN LIGHTWEIGHT TYRE TECHNOLOGY BRIDGESTONE IN EUROPE has launched Enliten, a new lightweight tyre technology the company says represents an ‘unmatchable reduction in material and rolling resistance performance to contribute to the reduction of a vehicle’s CO2 emissions, while providing the same wear life as a standard original equipment tyre’. Bridgestone adds that tyres with embedded Enliten technology also improve a vehicle’s handling and stability. The company says the technology reduces the rolling resistance of a passenger tyre by, on average, 20 per cent from a standard premium summer touring tyre, assisting in the reduction
of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in combustion vehicles, while also extending battery life and vehicle range in electric vehicles. Enliten enables passenger tyres to be reduced in weight by, on average, 10 per cent from a standard premium summer touring tyre, meaning less raw materials are used to manufacture the tyres, while also contributing to the reduced rolling resistance. Bridgestone says Enliten is able to achieve all this without any trade-off on tyre wear or safety. The technology combines a proprietary compound mix that enables improved wear performance and a decreased tread depth, a reduced and reinforced inner liner thickness, and a new dedicated mould design concept. Bridgestone says it will soon be announcing partnerships that will see Enliten technology applied to vehicles in the European market.

VOLKSWAGEN CREATES NEW SOFTWARE UNIT VOLKSWAGEN AG INTENDS to group more than 5,000 digital experts together in a new ‘Car.Software’ unit with Group responsibility for software in vehicles by 2025. The company says it plans to develop significantly more software in the car and for vehicle-related services itself and to boost the in-house share of software development from the current figure of less than 10 per cent to at least 60 per cent by 2025. In future, there is to be one uniform software platform with all the basic functions for all vehicles throughout the Group. This will consist of the vehicle operating system ‘vw.os’ and the Volkswagen Automotive Cloud. By 2025, all new Group models are to run on this software platform. The first vehicle based on this software platform will be the ID.3. Currently, more than 20,000 potential customers have registered for the pre-booking of this model. There are now plenty of electric motorcycle models either on the drawing board or being built and it seems inconceivable that BMW Motorrad won’t join the electric bike charge. If this is what they’re going to deliver, the future looks pretty good for motorcycle enthusiasts out there who want a piece of the electric-vehicle action. July 2019 Motor Trader | 49

NEW VW ID.3 TO BE EQUIPPED WITH HIGHCAPACITY BATTERIES AND EIGHT-YEAR WARRANTY
V
OLKSWAGEN WILL LAUNCH production of the ID.3 before the end of the year. The compact-class model is the first member of the ID. Family, and VW says its lithium-ion batteries will allow for a range of up to 550 kilometres. The company says it will guarantee that the batteries will retain at least 70 per cent of their usable capacity after eight years or 160,000 kilometres. Volkswagen will offer the ID batteries in different sizes. If an owner is not really interested in being able to drive long distances ( for example because they mainly only drive short distances in a city), they can opt for a battery with a relatively low energy content. This, in turn, will make

their vehicle less expensive. Those who frequently drive long distances can choose a larger battery. Depending on the battery and vehicle type, a maximum range of approx. 330 to 550 kilometres can be achieved.
Volkswagen ID.3
Volkswagen says it has also designed the batteries to be able to accommodate a charging capacity of up to 125 kW, meaning fast charging times. Volkswagen expects around 50 per cent of all charging operations will be performed at home and 20 per cent at work and a new range of wall boxes have been designed with that relationship in mind. These charging stations, which can be installed at home or at a business, work with charging capacities of up to 11 kilowatts (AC). The wall box has enough power to charge a battery up to full power overnight or in the course of a working day. Volkswagen also believes that 25 per cent of all charging operations will occur in public spaces and five per cent at recharging stations on motorways. Depending on the driving style employed, an ID.3 with the largest battery variant would only have to be charged twice on an 800km trip. If the battery is charged at a fast charging station with a high capacity, around 260 kilometres of additional range could be charged in 30 minutes.

What makes the K-code so special is not only its high-performance additions, but just how few were made. “The Mustangs had four different codes,” explains Philip. “T for the basic sixcylinder version, the base V8 model was the C, the A with a four-barrel carbie and then the K code.” While the K-codes shares the 289ci V8 of the other models, its four-barrel carbie has bigger secondaries, making 600 CFM 60 | Motor Trader July 2019
(cubic feet per minute of airflow) compared to the next code down’s 480 CFM. It also has, among other extras, solid lifters, screw-in studs on the heads, and conrods, pistons, heads and valves all designed to take high revs, delivering 271hp at 6000 RPM straight from the factory. That, Philip says, was a pretty hot deal off the showroom floor. “For the 1965 model, 7200 K-codes were produced, which was 0.7 per cent of the Mustangs built that year. “There is a world register of K-codes, which this car went on in 1981, and as of today there’s only 1500 on the register, so it’s a fairly rare bit of work.” In 2002, Philip went with a friend to look at Mustang - a 1969 coupe the owner had bought new in Canada and that had just
31,000 miles on the clock. While checking out that car, however, Philip spied something under blankets in the corner of the garage. That something was this K-code, the first Philip had seen, and a very different car to the one it is today. “We talked all afternoon and at the end he said he’d sell it to me,” says Philip. “I went away, did some research and learnt just how rare and special these cars are. Plus, it was going to be as close as I’d ever get to a Shelby, as these are the cars Carroll Shelby based his Mustangs on.” They made a deal, and Phil began a restoration of the car that would stretch over nine years. Thanks to VIN and data plates, plus online resources, it’s a relatively easy task
to establish what each Mustang sported when it rolled off the line, including paint colour and interior finish. For Philip, there was only one end game worth considering – restoring the K-code back to the original. That included converting it back to lefthand-drive from right-hand-drive, which was mandatory in Queensland to register a car in the 1970s. “It was a typical 1970s conversion, just swapping the steering and pedals over, basically, and Colin Chapman in Logan Village, who’s been doing Mustang conversions since the 1970s, did the work,” says Philip. “We sourced a left-hand dash from someone who’d done a RHD conversion, drilled out the original factory welds and put the new one in. “The car had not run since 1976 – the motor was seized and the bores very rusty – when it came time to do the motor, Shane Moran at SWC Automotive bored it out to 30,000 and then 60,000 and it was still leaching rust. July 2019 Motor Trader | 61
“He said we’d have to throw away the block and use a new one, but I said no, as the K-codes have a VIN stamped in the block and transmission – a close-ratio top loader – so that’s hen’s teeth stuff.” The previous owner bought the car in 1981 in Gladstone. It was painted yellow with black stripes, had flared guards and brackets on the sills indicating it had either side exhausts or a stoneflectors. Sadly, Philip ran into issues with the original panel beater tasked with the job of getting the body back to showroom condition, and the project was put back by at least 12 months with the car sitting idle at Robbo’s (Robert Haken) Logan Village Smash. “When work commenced, Robbo rang to tell me the car was so out of shape we wouldn’t be able to get the motor back in,” says Philip. “So, it was back on the rig, straightened up and then back to bare metal before being sprayed in the original colour, Rangoon Red. “Robbo used PPG paint and in the sun the colour just pops. The paint on the car now is exactly as it was when it came off the gun in 2007 and that is a real testament to Robbo.”
62 | Motor Trader July 2019
Philip got the rolling shell back towards the end of 2007 and then put the car back together himself in his grandmother-inlaw’s single-bay garage. “I’ve worked in a library for 32 years, I’ve no mechanical background but I’m pretty good at pulling things apart and putting them back carefully,” says Philip. “Plus you can buy factory exploded-view diagrams for absolutely everything, and I had a great resource in the online community at hipomustang.com.” Philip revealed there’s a few rarities on the car that required special treatment during the rebuild. “The fuel pumps in 1965 were crimped together, but in 1966 they went to a screw together so you could put a kit through them. A guy in the U.S. found a company that could uncrimp and crimp them back together, but they needed to do 50 at a time. “Word got out, and all these Shelby owners, who had original pumps sitting on the shelf, got excited and the company had 50 in three weeks! “I got in on the second lot and it came back like new. It’s never leaked, never missed a beat. “The carbie is another rarity, an Autolite
4100. In the 1970s the Holley carbies came out, and because the Autolites can be a bit finicky to keep in tune, a lot of them were replaced and lost. “When I bought the car, it had a Holley 600 with Weiand manifold, but the then-owner gave me a plastic bag and said, ‘I think that’s the carby’. “I’ve had a lot of luck with this car, but I also went to crazy lengths to get it back to original.” Come 2011, Philips pony was ready to gallop again, and he decided to debut it in grand fashion, entering it in the Mustang Owners Club Australia Nationals in Brisbane. He won a silver in what was his first time showing a car. “There were plenty of people saying that was a huge effort for a first car,” said Philip. “From there, we’ve entered State concourses and won gold, and in 2016 won another silver at the nationals. “I retired the car from concoursing after that as it’s a huge amount of work and, really, I did all this to drive the car more than show it.” The car’s been a regular on club runs as well as making a couple of appearances at Lakeside Park raceway ‘running at full noise, which is a lot of fun,’ Philip said with a grin. But now, Philip’s looking to pass this rare beauty on to another. It’s a matter of practicality in the main. “The K-code has a black interior and no air conditioning, and it gets pretty warm in a Queensland summer,” he said. “We also have a 1966 C-code coupe that was one of 161 Ford Australia bought in to promote the Mustang-bred XR Falcon V8. It’s pretty rare as well.
“So, the plan now is to sell the K-code and buy a new Mustang, so we’ll have a classic and a contemporary.” While the photos on these pages convey just how incredible this car is, seeing it in real life is another level. It truly is a testament not only to the many experts who worked on it, but to Philip’s singleminded passion to resurrect this rare Mustang and put it back on the road in a condition as close as possible to when it rolled out of the factory. Whoever owns it next will have acquired a Mustang that really is one in a million. • If you're interested in getting your hands on this piece of automotive history, it is for sale. Bentley Flying Spur Grand Tourer
BENTLEY UNVEILS ALL-NEW FLYING SPUR
T
HIS IS BENTLEY’S new Flying Spur Grand Tourer. It’s an all-new vehicle, a ground-up development that the company says ‘pushes the boundaries of both technology and craftsmanship to deliver segment-defining levels of performance and refinement’. A bold claim, but if you’re Bentley, then you probably have a strong argument there. Certainly, the new Flying Spur looks like it should deliver with Bentley’s new sculptural design language giving the car a modern, muscular flavour. Tech features include electronic All-Wheel Steering couple with Active All-Wheel Drive and Bentley Dynamic Ride. New threechamber air springs allow for a greater range of suspension

adjustment between limousine-style and sporting levels of control. Driver assistance systems include Traffic Assist, City Assist and Blind Spot Warning. The body itself features multimaterial construction. At the heart of the Flying Spur is an enhanced version of Bentley’s 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12, mated to a dualclutch eight-speed transmission. Bentley says the new TSI engine delivers 626bhp and 900Nm with cracking figures of 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 333km/h. Inside, as you would expect, it’s luxury mixed with technology everywhere. There’s single and veneer wood options, fluted leather seating
and three-dimensional diamond quilted leather door inserts combining with HD digital instrument panel display, a rotating centre console with a 12.3-inch digital touchscreen, and a remote-control touch
screen for rear passengers. The ‘Flying B’ mascot is given some tech treatment too – for the first time in modern memory, it’s retractable and rises from beneath a Bentley badge. Nice.

AM-RB 003 TO BE KNOWN AS THE ASTON MARTIN VALHALLA FORMERLY KNOWN AS AM-RB 003, Aston Martin’s latest mid-engined hypercar collaboration with Red Bull Advanced Technologies and Adrian Newey has been officially named the Aston Martin Valhalla. Named after the warrior’s paradise celebrated in ancient Norse mythology, Valhalla follows the Valkyrie and employs lightweight construction methods and the aerodynamics pioneered in that car. Valhalla will be propelled by a combination of high-efficiency, highoutput turbocharged V6 petrol engine and battery-electric hybrid system. Just 500 Coupe examples of the allcarbon fibre hypercar will be built. “Aston Martin model names always attract a lot of attention. They do so because they invariably capture an emotion or tell a story,” said Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group Chief Executive Officer. “In following the Valkyrie we knew the Aston Martin Valhalla needed to make a strong statement of its own, yet also offer continuity and a clear connection. Norse mythology contains such powerful language and rich storytelling it felt only right that the AM-RB 003 should follow the Valkyrie’s theme.” July 2019 Motor Trader | 73

FORD TO INTRODUCE NEW MODELS BUT WILL SCALE BACK EUROPEAN OPERATIONS
F
ORD IS LAUNCHING a new business model and fresh vehicle line-up as part of the most comprehensive redesign in the history of its business in Europe. The new European operating model and resulting organisation are effective July 1. Three new business groups –Commercial Vehicles (CVs), Passenger Vehicles (PVs) and Imports – are being established to facilitate what the company says will be ‘fast decision making centred on customer needs.’ The company will also introduce at least three new nameplates in the next five years. These will, Ford says, include the all-new Mustang-inspired fully electric performance utility. The new nameplates are in addition to all-new Kuga, Puma and Explorer Plug-In Hybrid coming by early 2020. Every new Ford passenger vehicle nameplate will include an electrified option.
CLOSURES The foundation of Ford’s new model in Europe is what the company says it 'a broad-based efficiency improvement program'. This program will, sadly, include the closure or sale of component manufacturing plants by the end of next year: · Proposed closure of Bridgend Engine Plant in South Wales 76 | Motor Trader July 2019
· Closure of Ford Aquitaine Industries Transmission Plant in France · Closure of Naberezhnye Chelny Assembly, St. Petersburg Assembly and Elabuga Engine Plant in Russia · Sale of the Kechnec Transmission Plant in Slovakia to Magna As a result, Ford’s manufacturing footprint in Europe will be reduced to a proposed 18 facilities by the end of 2020, from 24 at the beginning of 2019. In addition, Ford is implementing shift reductions at its assembly plants in Saarlouis, Germany, and Valencia, Spain, as well as a more streamlined management structure and marketing and sales operations. In total, approximately 12,000 jobs will be impacted at Ford’s wholly owned facilities and consolidated joint ventures in Europe by the end of 2020.

HE END OF financial year has come and gone and we’ve had a pretty productive year. We’ve seen our apprenticeship training numbers increase and we’ve maintained our high level of satisfaction for students and employers. This is great for the industry. However, the Australian Jobs 2019 report and, in particular, the breakdown of the automotive industry within the report, notes there’s some decrease in the projected employment change in the automotive industry over the next five years. However, I believe there’s certainly plenty of opportunity – it’s just where to focus. The foundation of the automotive workforce has been the apprenticeship model and I still believe this to be the best model moving forward. Learning while you work and achieving a trade qualification at the end of your apprenticeship is a great achievement. But it is what comes next that I believe determines an individual’s future and their employment chances. And that is

Training GM's Professional Circle perspective automotive industry. These are the MTA Queensland Auto Camp (three days), followed by an Automotive Prevocational Program ( five weeks). These courses will help people gain an insight into the automotive retail, service and repair industry and, hopefully, place them into employment following the automotive prevocational program. We are also thrilled this month to have representation from apprentices, trainees and trainers state-wide at the Queensland Training Award regional finals. The awards showcase all that’s great about Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Queensland. The MTA Institute celebrates our own VET Trainer of the Year nominee, Terry Palfrey, and Apprentice and Trainee of the Year nominees Jack Goodrich, Symon Meer
Axton and Shauna Milne. They will compete against three other finalists in their category and region. If successful, they will go on to compete for the State award and will face off against all regional winners in September. Good luck to all. As always, if you need any further information on workforce development, please do not hesitate to contact us.

’M WRITING THIS from the UK, where I have been visiting Bath University Department of Mechanical Engineering Powertrain and Vehicle Research Centre (PVRC). The PVRC conducts research that focuses on improving the efficiency and emissions of both diesel and petrol engines and all aspects of automotive powertrain engineering. My program for the day of my visit was organised by Dr Richard Burke, FIMechE, Senior lecturer for this department, and he gave me an overview of the work they are doing. It was a very informative discussion. Being a mechanical engineer, Richard gave a balanced view of how industry is going with electric power sources and I particularly liked the following idea regarding charging vehicles. In a particular car park at the university, they have approximately 10 charging
stations. If all of these were connected to vehicles, a lot of energy would be used. However, maybe not all the vehicles need to be charged at the same time. Richard gave me the following scenario: If one vehicle arrives at 6am and is due to stay until 4pm, and another vehicle arrives at 9am but has to go at noon, then by using a smart charging system, the vehicle that needs to go at noon can be charged first. And, potentially, vehicles that are already fully charged could be used to charge other vehicles that are connected to the charging circuit. Richard gave an excellent review of the new Institute for Advance Automotive Propulsion Systems that is being built just outside Bristol. This facility is a research centre designed to support the delivery of advance power sources for cleaner and more efficient vehicles. There are plans to build a battery research centre next to this facility at a later date. Dr Simon Pickering and Dr Andy Lewis - Research Fellows at the Department of Mechanical Engineering - then took me

HIS IS THE Audi AI:ME, introduced at Auto Shanghai back in April. The concept is, the company says, capable of level 4 autonomy and has a drive unit on the rear axle developing 125kW. No other performance specs are known as yet. The concept is designed as a 2 plus-x-seater and its layout relies on a variety of configurations for seat positions and stowage space. Plenty of high-tech business going on here, of course. The Audi AI:ME is designed for use in the city and level 4 autonomy means it is designed to drive automatically in a defined traffic area equipped with the corresponding infrastructure. Communication and interaction systems are operated by means of eye tracking,

voice input, and touch-sensitive fields in the door rail. There is a multifunctional, threedimensional OLED monitor that runs below and along the entire length of the windshield and is used with eyetracking control. Function menus such as navigation or infotainment can be activated with the eye.
There are even VR goggles on board for the visual output of the infotainment system. A high-quality audio system is coupled with noise compensation that can suppress the outside noise level by means of active noise control. Connectivity means occupants (via an Audi app) can access the entire Internet for the purposes of entertainment,
research, and service. Connection between the user’s home network and the Audi AI:ME even allows users to continue watching a movie using the VR goggles. There’s also electrochromatic control that, amongst other things, can shield the interior with continuously tintable windows. Crickey. July 2019 Motor Trader | 91

LACK OF MEANINGFUL inflation in the United States has caused the Fed to back away from further increases in the federal fuds rate for the moment. The move has seen risk assets move higher, anticipating a longer period of lower rates than previously expected. Market sentiment has, however, been reined in by the ongoing geopolitical friction between the United States and China. Failure to reach a trade deal has seen tariffs increase further as the two biggest economies trade blows in what is beginning to emerge as a struggle for power which goes beyond trade deficits. Domestically however, the Australian markets have been handed significant reprieve in the form of a rate cut and a favourable political landscape, courtesy of the RBA and the surprise Coalition election victory, respectively. The election has seen significant boosts to the banks, property and consumer sectors as the negative impacts of the previously proposed Labor Government’s policies impacts on the housing market are wound back. As always, it is important in times of market euphoria to maintain a focus on the bigger picture and we continue to position our portfolios with a quality bias, with the aim of outperformance through the cycle. 92 | Motor Trader July 2019
