ELLO AND WELCOME to the May 2019 edition of Motor Trader. A couple of big events in the automotive world - the New York International Auto Show and Auto Shanghai - are the focus of our cover story. The two shows are - along with similar events in Detroit and Geneva - perhaps the biggest auto shows on the planet and there was alot happening at both this year. While we can't cover everything that went on, we thought we might have a look at some of the interesting vehicles and concepts that were revealed during each event and you can view them from page 18. We also have other reveals from the shows sprinkled through this edition. They are pretty interesting showing the continued push

towards electrification and autonomy and the rise of China as perhaps THE big player in this future. Not quite as high-tech, but still very exciting was the MTAQ Racing Team's appearance at the Federal Tyres Excel Challenge at the iconic Mount Panorama circuit. It's always a thrill to be able to race at the home of Aussie motorsport and the team, led by driver David Wood, put on a battling display against the very best Excel racing outfits in Australia. See how the team got on from page 28. Also in this edition we have our regular MTA Q&A and Member Classic features. This month's member classic is a stunning 1934 Ford Coupe rod built by Grant Malseed from Superformance in Brisbane. It has been in Grant's possession for more than 30 years and is an absolute stunner. I hope you enjoy this month's edition, and if you have any news you'd like to share, or have a classic car, bike or truck you'd like to see featured, then get in contact with me. Cheers! OST INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIONS across the nation are closely monitoring the election policy releases of the major political parties to assess potential influences on the economy and their respective sectors. The MTA Queensland is no exception. We too focus on election policy content, particularly those relevant to the automotive industry which includes the motor trades, business and the skills and training sector. From the perspective of MTA Queensland, we have engaged in policy consultations with decision makers and policy advisers from both sides of politics to press the policy positions of the Association and the views of members on automotive, business and training issues. To emphasise these policy positions and views, following the calling of the election we submitted to Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten a framework of policy positions relevant to the growth of the nation’s automotive sector. These were reflected in our Queensland Motor Trades Priorities for an Incoming Government document which incorporated: industry skills and training; automotive; small/ medium business support; workplace relations; taxation; infrastructure and

energy policy. It is on the website for member’s interest. For good measure, copies were forwarded to the Chief Executive Officers of the Australian Labor and Liberal Parties thus enabling both the political and administrative wings of these parties to be aware of the Association’s contributions. In the election process, this communication is important. It means after the election, we as an industry body can be recognised as conscientious, consistent and credible advocates in the policy process, able to engage confidently in policy consultations with government and its agencies on behalf of members and the automotive industry. This is relevant, particularly as the revolutionary technological digital transformations wash through business, the automotive industry and the consequences for skills and training.

DOMESTIC PRIORITIES The primary domestic priority at present is finalising the end of the financial year accounts and processes and working with the senior executive team to develop the 2019/20 budget to align with the recently approved 2019-2021 Strategic Plan. This document sets out an ambitious agenda of actions that includes service excellence; corporate social responsibility, business excellence; expand our profile; workforce and skilling solutions; creativity and innovation; and grow and diversify. Key domestic duties are highlighted in the Q3 report card which is on the website. A critical analysis of the current and previous report cards indicates that we have achieved the goals stated in the 2016-18 Strategic Plan. It is my objective assessment we have exceeded the goals. For this, credit is due to our dedicated

corporate office team and the leadership of the MTA Queensland Board. Innovation was a priority action in the previous Strategic Plan; the recent third Carmageddon symposium which was booked out indicates the high involvement of the MTA Queensland membership and aligned stakeholders. The Q3 quarter report highlights too the primacy of service delivery and advocacy. There were 1,218 member engagements, 1,462 phone/ email industrial relation queries; and 66 ministerial, senior department, innovation, key industry meetings. Encouragingly, our profile continues to grow with some 4,000 Facebook followers and media print awareness generating a reach of about 964,000.

A NEW ACCOLADE FOR THE MTA INSTITUTE In October’s From the Desk of the CEO, I referred to The MTA Institute’s (MTAI) quality training regime being subjected to appraisal under the Australian Council for Private Education and Training’s (ACPET) Industry Certification Program (the Program), a 360⁰ peer review process. The result of that appraisal is in and the MTA Institute is the first trade Registered Training Organisation in Australia to be approved under the ACPET Program. It means that an ‘ACPET Industry Certified Member’ is recognised for student centric educational quality; ethical practices; continuous improvement culture and professional student services that exceeds regulatory outcomes and measures. This achievement builds on the awards and scholarships of MTAI apprentices. Elliot Lemmon, a former MTAI vehicle apprentice was selected as the winner of the Queensland Automotive Skills Alliance, Queensland Overseas Foundation Industry Partnership Scholarship.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES As mentioned in November’s From the Desk of the CEO, I participated in discussions with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) academics on the Association’s involvement in a proposed Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery project relevant to 3D printing - which is a central to our Innovation Hub. The original application was submitted some 18 months ago. Now, that has advanced to the extent that under the leadership of Australian National University’s (ANU), funding is being finalised for the ARC Training Centre for Multiscale 3D Imaging, Modelling and Manufacturing. Recently I met with ANU and QUT to finalise the partnership and role in the project. In total it will be a five-year venture in which there will be a number of research projects that will examine the future of industry in the space of 3D printing. The partnership is one of the largest and most exciting projects relevant to the automotive industry. The objective will be to identify new opportunities in micro manufacturing for our motor trades’ divisions. It will examine how sectors of our industry will benefit by considering issues such as, behavioural economics; circular economy opportunities, particularly to our recycler division; and where inventory holdings have historically been detrimental to cash flow. A key outcome through our participation and contribution to the venture is the development of expertise in highly skilled people to meet the needs of this emerging specialised sector. In previous From the Desk of the CEO, I’ve referred to discussions with Telstra about its Co-operative Intelligent Transport Systems. These collaborations are May 2019 Motor Trader | 5

THE DIARY I was invited to be a co-presenter with international guests at the Brisbane QODE event on the future of mobility with a particular focus on Australia’s electric vehicle (EV) status. QODE is a forum for visionaries, pioneers and innovations’ drivers, with speakers from diverse backgrounds. The session in which I participated was ‘Next-generation transportation – an emerging industry’. It was an interactive session allowed for elaboration on the exponential growth segment of EVs and Autonomous EVs. The prognosis is that the smart commute market is expected to quadruple in size within five years, with opportunities for innovation and economic rewards for early adopting cities and states. Jobs Queensland held a forum on its Future of Work project which I attended. It provided the opportunity to stress the views in our submission relating to skills and training. I reiterated that there needs to be major investments, reforms and 6 | Motor Trader May 2019

restructures to the formation and delivery of human capital for the automotive value chain if the state’s economic performance, competitiveness and standards of living are to be maintained at their present levels.

AND THE LAST THING I share with you some happenings that suggest our new goal to expand our profile under the 2019-2021 Strategic Plan is on track to be achieved. The MTAI has been short listed for the Queensland Training Awards for ‘Small Training Provider of the Year’. Final interviews will be held shortly which will determine the winner. We also have individual contenders for the Queensland Training Awards. Proudly I announce that our technical trainers Zak Zuiderduin, Terry Palfrey and Scott Gehrke are all finalists for ‘Trainer of the Year’ and Jack Goodrich, the MTA Queensland 2018 Apprentice of the Year, is a finalist for the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ Award. In addition, MTA Queensland is a finalist in the Australian Business Awards for ‘Business Innovation’ arising from the establishment of MTAiQ – Australia’s first automotive innovation hub. We have been advised that our nomination has progressed to the next stage of the selection assessment process. The Australian Business Awards are an allencompassing awards program honouring organisations that demonstrate the core values of business excellence, product excellence, sustainability and commercial success in their respective industries. The winners will be revealed on 5 July 2019 when we will know how we measure against the many other nominees. Until next month, as Henry Ford, the industrialist and the founder of the Ford motor company said, ‘execute ideas with enthusiasm . . . as it is the bottom of all progress’.

UTOMOTIVE AND MOBILITY have been in the spotlight, overshadowing the administrative products that the Corporate Office is quietly progressing. The concept for these derives from listening to views and concerns at divisional meetings and feedback from members. The products are not international showroom stoppers, far from it. They do, however, have the potential to assist members with business practises and cashflow if adopted into their operations. And once again, these products underpin the value of the MTA Queensland membership. The first is the GoPay service. In a nutshell, GoPay has two advantages. Firstly, it assists businesses who sign up for the GoPay service with cashflow and, secondly, it offers customers an interest free installment option for automotive bills incurred. Under the GoPay service, the automotive business will be paid for the total of the work within a short period at the start of the payment plan ensuring it with cashflow and the confidence to conduct their operations. Equally important is for customers incurring sudden, extensive or general automotive costs above a nominated amount. They

More details on the GoPay service is in this edition of Motor Trader. Please call us for more details on offering this product in your business. The second product is ‘still a work in progress’. I’d hoped to have it advanced to the stage that I could share it with you in this Viewpoint. I can give a hint however, to the extent that it will help members with their cashflow.

ELECTIONS No, this does refer to the current general Federal election underway. Under MTA Queensland rules, divisional and district representation elections must be held. I draw members’ attention to the Australian Electoral Commission’s (AEC) notification on the MTA Queensland website located here. Nominations to fill divisional memberships CLICK and district TO ACCESS representatives can be MTAQ ELECTION NOMINATION lodged with the AEC REQUIREMENTS Returning Officer from 1 May 2019. The closing date for nominations is 12pm, 3 June 2019. There are

five vacancies for each of the following divisions: Automotive Remarketing Division; Engine Re-Conditioners Association of Queensland; Service Station and Convenience Store Association of Queensland (SS&CSAQ); Rental Vehicle Industry Division; Auto Parts Recyclers Division; and one representative from the Central District and one form the Far North District. This is an important election. The automotive sector is in a technologically driven transition phase; the most significant since beginning more than a century ago. It is incumbent on divisional members to be proactive and represent their respective trades so that advocacy on their behalf to government and agencies reflects their issues and concerns. Further, as an Association we must strive to improve gender balance on the divisional committees. I urge women in the automotive trades to nominate and have input into their trade. Whilst thinking about nominations, Members’ attention is drawn to the opening of nominations for the MTA Queensland Awards, the details of which are here. The Award categories are: ‘community’, ‘innovation’ and the newly introduced ‘women in industry’. The winners will be announced at the Industry Awards Dinner on Saturday, 16 November 2019 at the Emporium Hotel, South Bank.

ADVOCACY The Federal Department of Environment and Energy is consulting on the recently released ‘Liquid Fuel Security Review’ interim report to which we will respond. Australia’s approach to liquid fuel security is to apply minimal regulation or government intervention in pursuit of an efficient market that delivers fuel to

Australians as cheaply as possible. The review considers the consequences of this approach. The intention from the consultation is to provide advice on the benefits and risks of a market-driven approach. In particular, it will consider the risk of disruptions impacting on supply or the price of fuel in Australia. Open for consultation is the Draft Queensland Transport Strategy. This provides the 30-year vision for the transformation of state’s transport system to ensure that it will have flexibility in responding to customer preferences, global trends and emerging technologies. I’ve invited our divisional committees to consider the strategy and provide viewpoints to supplement our submission due for lodgement on 24 May 2019.

MEMBER PORTAL 2.0 COMING SOON To ensure its versatility and friendliness, the member portal is being refreshed and we are still making refinements before our launch. This means when a member logs in, it will look different. The changes make it more user friendly and customer centric. It will be easier to navigate and incorporates tools for a member’s business to be easily located under the Find a Member section with the integration of google maps. MTA Queensland’s shop has had a makeover too. In fact, there’s some substantial changes to the functionality of the shopping cart and general shopping experience. When used to purchase industry products there is an improved preview of the products in which the business may have interest. I’ve tested it and liked the changes, finding it easier to navigate and review products. I trust you will share the same experience, and of course your feedback is welcomed. Small change. Big future. Matthew Webster (46) has a long way to go before he hangs up his hat, but he can already picture his retirement. He plans to travel around Australia in a caravan with his wife — once he convinces her that it will be fun! Matt has spent his career in the motor trades and is well on his way to making sure he has enough super to see the country in comfort. He joined MTAA Super as an apprentice in 1989 and now works in an automotive training role in NSW. “I’m really happy I’ve been with MTAA Super. It’s the industry super fund for my trade and has been supporting careers in the automotive industry for over 25 years.” “I’m still a long way off retirement, but I do think about what I will do when I stop working and how I will support myself and my family.”

Matt, like many Australians, is not alone in his concern. Thanks to changing work patterns and increased life expectancy, many of us will spend close to a quarter of our lives as retirees. For some, the age pension alone or relying solely on your employer’s super contributions may not be enough. Leeanne Turner, CEO of MTAA Super, says it’s important that workers do what they can to help grow their super throughout their working lives. “Too many workers are hands-off with their super. Retirement can feel like a lifetime away, so it’s easy to put super on the back burner. But there are a lot of ways you can actively grow your super now.” She says one of the easiest and most effective ways is to make regular extra contributions.

“Small amounts can go a long way. Putting as little as an extra $10 per week into your super can add up to thousands over a 30+ year career.” “This is because of the compounding nature of superannuation. With super, you don’t just grow your employer and voluntary contributions, you also grow the investment returns on these contributions. Every dollar you add to your super account boosts your super’s earning capacity.” Ms Turner also adds that making extra contributions is easy. “It’s simple. Just ask your employer to set up a regular (pre-tax) salary sacrifice into your super, or make direct (after-tax) deposits into your super whenever you can afford to put a little aside.”

Michael Daly

MTA|Q&A Third-generation Queensland mechanic Michael Daly followed in the footsteps of his dad Kevin and grandfather Eddie, who started his apprenticeship in the 1930s. Today with business partner Rodney Mann (Eddie’s former apprentice), Michael runs two Auto Stop workshops - both of which participate in the Repco Authorised Service Program - one at Salisbury in Brisbane and one at the Gold Coast. The pair apply to their twin shops a work ethic and attention to detail instilled in them decades ago by their mentors.

What products and services does Auto Stop provide? not too much that we don't do other than MD: Pretty much everything to do with a car the interior or panel work. other than panel and paint, so: mechanical servicing, logbook servicing, engine reconditioning, cylinder head repair, cooling systems, brakes, clutches, gearboxes, tyres, wheel alignments and suspension. There's 12 | Motor Trader May 2019

How did Auto Stop become established? MD: My business partner Rodney Mann and I started Auto Stop in December 1990 in a little shop in Stone's Corner

in Brisbane. We operated out of there for about 16 or 17 years until a development came along and booted us out. From there we were able to purchase a property in Salisbury – about twice the size of the original premises – and we’re still there today. And then about four or five years ago we bought our second workshop at Arundel on the Gold Coast.

What was behind the expansion to the Gold Coast? MD: I moved to down to the coast in

2003, and I always wanted to have a shop down here. I had a lot of friends and contacts that were asking me about doing something down here – for a while I was actually traveling in acquaintances' cars back to and fro between Brisbane and the Gold Coast to work on them. Then this shop became available and we thought “we’ve got an opportunity here; we'll grab it and see what happens”.

How did you and Rodney enter the industry? MD: It actually goes back to my

He was a mechanic in Queensland through World War II, and he never stopped turning spanners. He was not a businessman, he was bent over the bonnet doing mechanical work. And he was a people person – everyone loved Eddie. May 2019 Motor Trader | 13

Is that how your dad Kevin got into automotive? MD: Dad started as a milkman, then in

1974 he and Eddie bought the Mobil service station on the corner of Mains Road and Kessels Road, right across from QE2 stadium. From that point on they were both mechanics, right up until they sold in 1990.

So you grew up around your dad’s shop? MD: I was a bowser boy, I used to get

two dollars for a Saturday putting fuel in the cars. Rodney started there as an apprentice to Eddie at 15 and he stayed until the business was sold in 1990 and we became partners and opened Auto Stop.

Are your clients mostly private? MD: The majority of our clients these days

are private. We do have some fleet work in Brisbane, but that’s probably 10 to 20 per cent of our turnover. The rest is private mums and dads.

And being established that long, are you now seeing generations of repeat business coming through?

“IT'S FUNNY, YOU SEE

Unfortunately, now actually we're starting to go to funerals. We've got customers from as far back as the Mobil servo in the ‘70s that have followed us from site to site.

What sort of influence were your dad and grandfather on how you run the business? MD: A huge influence, because you see what they're doing and you want to be what they

are, essentially. I think the biggest drive I got from my father was wanting to run my own business. I wanted to prove to him that I could run a business. In mechanical knowledge, it was my grandfather. He was the mechanic that taught me and Rodney everything we know: old school stuff as well as new school. He taught us fundamental stuff we still teach our apprentices to this day, little tips to know so you don't miss details or forget things.

And how did the relationship with the Repco Authorised Service Program come to be and what does it mean to the business? MD: We started out as a total independent

back in 1990, but then I saw around 2000 there was a real need to be part of a group, with the way access to manufacturer information on the cars and everything was going. So whether it’s through our affiliation with the Repco Authorised Service Program, RACQ and MTAQ, we’re able to source the data we need to resolve an issue with the car.

Has right to repair been an issue? MD: It's getting very difficult. We've been

on a campaign for a while now with the automotive industry trying to get the right to repair. We finally had a win with that; getting information on a newer car’s electronics is now easier, rather than us having to track down the data ourselves or use generic information. We've got software here worth thousands of dollars that gives us information on the cars to be able to rectify them or repair them.

In the next 10 years I can't see things being too much different, other than that cars obviously doing a lot more work for the driver . . . and then obviously our job gets harder with servicing electronics. Electric cars are coming, but the cars still need suspension, they still need brakes, they still need diffs, they still need all that to get along the road.

always run the show. We've brought in family occasionally to help. My wife comes in a couple of days a week. On the Gold Coast we've got a manager, Gavin, and Cody the mechanic, and then I come in when needed. At the Brisbane store we've got Rodney, Brad the manager, and mechanic Tom, and Jayden our second-year apprentice. 16 | Motor Trader May 2019

like to relax and switch off. If I have the time, I've got a Valiant Pacer I'm doing up. I play with that occasionally when I've got the right head for it, and I’m about three quarters of the way through the restoration. I bought it from a client actually – they came in about five years ago to get a roadworthy and I asked if they'd be keen to sell.

EYES OF THE AUTO WORLD FOCUS ON SHANGHAI AND NEW YORK

I

T WAS A big month for motor shows in April, with both the U.S. and China vying to be the centre of attention with the New York International Auto Show taking place from April 19-28 and the Auto Shanghai Show taking place from April 16-25. Both are amongst the world’s biggest

shows and there were plenty of concepts and near-ready production cars revealed across the two events. Here are a few of the interesting vehicles spotted at the shows – and there are more dotted throughout this month’s issue of Motor Trader.

AIWAYS, THE SHANGHAI-based personal mobility provider, unveiled the U7 ion at Auto Shanghai. The U7 follows the introduction of Aiways' productionready U5 mid-size SUV into Europe at the Geneva International Motor Show in March. An intriguing vehicle, the U7 leans heavily into the use of artificial intelligence and includes an integrated self-learning robot mounted to a rail in the roof of the cabin that can automatically move around the vehicle’s interior. Aiways says the robot offers on-board sound recognition and passenger identification, amongst other features. 18 | Motor Trader May 2019

The U7 ion is equipped with 12 high definition screens, including a smart dashboard touchscreen integrated into the vehicle’s steering wheel to provide key information to the driver. There’s also a smart mobile console, which includes a touchscreen as well as table, refrigerator, air purifier and hot and cold cup holders that can be directed around the cabin. Pretty neat stuff.

BATHURST BATTLE FOR MTAQ RACING TEAM

I

N APRIL, THE MTAQ Racing Team headed down to the iconic Mount Panorama track at Bathurst to take its place amongst the elite of the Hyundai X3 racing category at the Federal Tyres Excel Challenge. The lead-up to the event, which was held on the weekend of April 19-21, had been an encouraging one and confidence was high. With the Federal Tyres Challenge attracting the best teams from around the country, the MTAQ crew were itching to battle it out with the elite.

28 | Motor Trader May 2019

“THINGS WERE LOOKING

GOOD, VERY GOOD . . . THE OTHER PLEASING ASPECT ABOUT THIS SESSION WAS THAT WE HAD IMPROVED OUR LAP TIME BY OVER THREE SECONDS FROM THE CORRESPONDING QUALIFYING SESSION FROM 2017, WHICH IS A TREMENDOUS IMPROVEMENT.”

At the same event in 2017, the team battled through some early challenges to take a brilliant third place in the final race. This year, however, things did not go the team’s way in the three-race meeting and some technical problems and a nasty prang in the final race paid to any hopes of reaching a podium position. In practice, the team found the suspension set-up for the car did not suit the undulating Mount Panorama track and a change was made for the Friday afternoon qualifying session. As with all X3 races, grid position throughout the weekend is determined by the result of the previous race, so getting a good spot at the front of the grid in the first race via qualifying is very important. With the suspension modified and the car seemingly in excellent condition, driver David Wood took to the track with a top qualifying spot in mind. However, the gremlins that have plagued the car in recent meetings returned on the first flying lap when the exhaust blew open at the extractor.

“WE MADE A GREAT START,

HOLDING OUR POSITION ON THE RUN UP THE MOUNTAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME AND RIGHT ON THE TAIL OF THE LEAD TRIO.” Even though the car was subsequently down on power, David piloted the car to an excellent 5th qualifying spot out of 53 cars. It was a fine effort. “Things were looking good, very good,” said David. “The other pleasing aspect about this session was that we had improved our lap time by over three seconds from the corresponding qualifying session from 2017, which is a tremendous improvement.” Some minor issues were dealt with on the Friday evening, including fixing the Excel’s exhaust and further tweaks to the suspension, but Saturday morning dawned with a top three finish a definite possibility. “UNFORTUNATELY, GOING UP TOWARDS THE TOP OF THE HILL ON THAT FIRST LAP, A GEAR SELECTION ISSUE LEFT ME WITH NO GEARS, AND IT TOOK WHAT FELT LIKE AN ETERNITY FOR THE GEAR TO FIND ITSELF - BUT NOT BEFORE WE HAD DROPPED BACK TO 18TH PLACE” “Saturday morning's Race One looked good for us, especially with the news of a disqualification elevating our starting position to 4th,” said David. “We made a great start, holding our position on the run up the mountain for the first time and right on the tail of the lead trio. “Unfortunately, going up towards the top of the hill on that first lap, a gear selection 30 | Motor Trader May 2019

issue left me with no gears, and it took what felt like an eternity for the gear to find itself but not before we had dropped back to 18th place. “Being gentle with the gearbox, but with our handling and exhaust now absolutely spot on, we were able to get back to 10th by lap 4 - setting our new Bathurst personal best of a 2:55.31 in the process! Unfortunately, there was an accident on that 4th lap and the race had to be stopped. “Under the rules of the stoppages, the race results are wound back to the

order on the last completed lap before the accident - which was lap 3. I crossed the line that lap in 13th so, under the rules, we were classified as having finished 13th - meaning that would be our starting spot for Race Two. Very annoying!” The team figured out and repaired the gear issue - the car had severed a gear selector cable – and headed out on track for Race Two as the light was fading on Saturday evening. The encroaching darkness forced race officials to cut the length of Race Two to just three laps – not enough for the MTAQ team to make meaningful inroads into the leading pack and the day ended with a 10th place finish. That meant it was going to be a tough ask for the final race on Sunday morning. And so it proved. The MTAQ Racing Team had to fix some exhaust problems early on during the Bathurst weekend

“Starting 10th, we made a good jump to slot into 9th on the opening lap,” said David. “The car was going splendidly, but then there was accident, and the race director was forced to deploy the safety car whilst it was cleaned up. “On the restart, our weekend was pretty much killed as I was hit hard from behind and spun around at turn one. Thankfully the field was able to avoid us, but the car stalled and was very slow in firing back up. When it did, we were dead last and the car was running rough - suggesting the impact had shaken something loose

“WE MISSED OUT ON THAT

PODIUM WE HAD BEEN CHASING, BUT ON THE POSITIVE, WE HELD OUR HEAD UP VERY HIGH AGAINST THE ABSOLUTE TOP FLIGHT GROUP OF EXCEL RACING IN THE COUNTRY.”

An Eye on Innovation

KATHY WINKCUP CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER GENERAL MANAGER INNOVATION

I

T HAS BEEN another busy month in the world of automotive innovation, but perhaps the most notable news stories of the last few weeks were a couple that concerned the electric vehicle sector and the race to develop fully-autonomous vehicles. Firstly, it was announced that Ford is investing $US500 million in Rivian, the U.S. based start-up developer of electric pick-up trucks and SUVs. As well as the investment stake, the Ford deal will see the companies work together to develop a new electric vehicle for Ford based on Rivian’s innovative Skateboard EV platform. If you think you’ve heard of Rivian before, you have - you may recall in February that the company had secured $US700million in an investment round led by Amazon. The investment numbers are mindbogglingly large and are evidence again, if more proof were needed, that electric vehicles are going to be a huge part of the automotive industry’s future. The other bit of interesting news came from Elon Musk, the man who could, through the establishment of Tesla, be recognised as the person who ushered in the current electric vehicle era. Tesla is obviously a leader in the electric vehicle field, but also is at the forefront of autonomous vehicle technology

36 | Motor Trader May 2019

development. However, it has taken a different tack to other companies on how to reach the ultimate goal of a fully self-driving vehicle. While most look to LiDAR (Light Detecting and Radar) as an essential component in that quest, Musk is somewhat dismissive of that technology, with Tesla instead focusing on the use of cameras (plus other sensors such as radar) and a neural network that is trained using data collected by the company’s cars. “Lidar is a fool’s errand,” said Musk at the Tesla Autonomy Day presentation on April 22. “Anyone who relies on Lidar is doomed. Expensive sensors that are unnecessary. It’s like having a whole bunch of expensive appendices. One appendix is bad, now we’ve got a whole bunch of them. It’s ridiculous.” It will be interesting to see which system wins out.

OUT AND ABOUT MTAiQ continues its mission to connect and collaborate with the wider network of organisations working in the innovation space and in April members of the innovation hub team attended a number of events and meetings. Most notable amongst these was the QODE innovation and technology festival held at the beginning of the month at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition. A fusion of festival and conference, QODE brought together leaders in innovation and tech, including our CEO, Dr Brett Dale, who took part in a panel discussion titled Next Generation Transportation – An Emerging Industry together with CLICK Constantin Schwaab, CEO TO SUBMIT of Wirelane in Germany. YOUR IDEA They explored the TO MTAIQ concept of the smart

commute market, which is expected to quadruple in size within five years, and which offers opportunities for innovation and economic rewards for cities and states that adopt the technologies early. The session elaborated on mobility-activated smart cities, transportation as a service (TAAS), flying cars and other aspects of this segment. Also on the agenda was the INNOV8 Logan meet-up, held at Logan-based tech start-up GO1. GO1 is one of the top online learning platforms in Australia and recently raised $30million in funding led by Microsoft’s venture fund M12. While the company has its headquarters in Logan, the company has offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth and internationally in the U.S., South Arica, Vietnam, the U.K., and Malaysia. Mid-April saw a briefing at MTAiQ from iMove CRC Program Director Jeff Kasparian. A consortium of 44 industry, government, and research partners engaged in concerted effort to improve Australia’s transport systems through collaborative R&D projects, iMove CRC researches the availability of data, emerging technology in vehicles and logistics, and the opportunities afforded by connectivity to find better ways to move people and goods around the country and the world. On the subject of logistics, April saw the eHealth Innovation Drones Showcase, which focused on drones emerging as a new medical tool that can help mitigate logistical problems and make healthcare more accessible. Speakers at the showcase included representatives from the Royal Flying Doctor Service, government, and companies including Swoop Aero, that operates high-speed autonomous airborne logistics networks, and Flyfreely, a Queensland-based start-up that is building software to allow any organisation to use drones anywhere in the world for any application. A couple of very interesting events towards the end of April included

a Visiting Entrepreneur Meetup in Toowoomba at which Alex Moss, Founder and CEO of Canaria delivered a presentation on her journey to being named 2018 Women in Technology’s Startup Entrepreneur of the Year Canaria’s technology allows for the continual monitoring of vital medical data without impeding on a person’s work, and it has found use in sectors from manned space exploration to predictive health care. MTAiQ are in discussion with Ms Moss to see if the Canaria Wearable Medical Device can be of use to MTA Queensland members and the wider automotive industry. The last event on April’s calendar saw MTAiQ Community Manager Nathan Nguyen take part in Mentoring on the Inside – a project in which mentors work with released prisoners from Borallon Training and Correctional Centre in building skills and confidence as they prepare for a life outside of prison and back in the community.

GOT AN IDEA? LET US KNOW! Part of our mission here at MTAiQ is to help develop the concepts and ideas that can help shape the future of the automotive industry and assist businesses to evolve and have a successful role to play in that future. Our team has assisted numerous startup and established companies to connect and network with the wider automotive and business community and find new avenues to develop their ideas. And we can do the same for you. As we all know, the automotive industry is evolving fast and as American businesswoman Jennifer Hyman noted, “Industries that are chaotic are ripe for innovation. They are open to anyone who has an idea.” So, if you have an idea that you think can be developed into a product that can be part of that evolution, then let us know. We really can help! Until next time. May 2019 Motor Trader | 37

VW TESTS HIGHLY AUTOMATED DRIVING IN HAMBURG

V

OLKSWAGEN GROUP RESEARCH has begun testing automated vehicles in urban traffic in Hamburg. This is the first time VW has begun to test automated driving to Level 4 at real driving conditions in a major German city. Level 4 means the vehicle has a high level of automation and the car can be used without human intervention in most situations. In VW’s case, a fleet of five e-Golf, equipped with laser scanners, cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radars, will drive on a digital test bed for automated and connected driving. The results of the test drives will be incorporated in the Group’s numerous research projects on automated driving. “The tests centre on 42 | Motor Trader May 2019

technical possibilities as well as urban infrastructure requirements,” said Axel Heinrich, Head of Volkswagen Group Research. “In order to make driving even safer and more comfortable in future, vehicles not only have to become autonomous and more intelligent – cities must also provide a digital ecosystem that enables vehicles to communicate

BMW GROUP AND MICROSOFT LAUNCH OPEN MANUFACTURING PLATFORM

with traffic lights and traffic management systems as well as with one another. A 9-kilometre digital test bed for automated and connected driving is currently being constructed in Hamburg, with completion scheduled for 2020. The city is upgrading traffic lights with components for infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication. The e-Golf have 11 laser scanners, seven radars and 14 cameras. VW says up to five gigabytes of data are communicated per minute during the regular test drives, each of which lasts several hours. A large amount of computing power in each car, combined with sensor technology, ensures data on pedestrians, cyclists, other cars, intersections, rights of way, parked vehicles and lane changes in moving traffic are captured over the shortest distances and in milliseconds. To analyse this data, VW says several different artificial intelligence approaches are used, including deep learning, neural networks and pattern recognition.

MICROSOFT AND THE BMW Group are aiming to create an open technology framework and crossindustry community initiative to enable faster, more cost-effective innovation in the manufacturing sector. The Open Manufacturing Platform (OMP) is designed to break down barriers that hinder production and profitability and it is expected to support the development of smart factory solutions that will be shared by OMP participants. The goal is to accelerate future Industrial IoT developments and drive production efficiencies while addressing common industrial challenges. Built on the Microsoft Azure Industrial IoT cloud platform, the OMP is intended to provide community members with a reference architecture with open-sourced components based on open industrial standards as well as an open data model. In addition to facilitating collaboration, this platform approach will, the companies say, unlock and standardise data models that enable analytics and machine learning scenarios. Utilising industrial use cases and sample code, community members and other partners will be able to develop their own services and solutions while maintaining control over their data. With currently over 3,000 machines, robots and autonomous transport systems connected with the BMW Group IoT Platform, which is built on Microsoft Azure’s cloud, IoT and AI capabilities, the BMW Group plans to contribute relevant initial use cases to the OMP community. BRITS LOOK TO THE GARAGE OF THE FUTURE IN NEW RESEARCH

B

Y 2050, AUTOMOTIVE workshops will be filled with advanced technology such as 3D printers, holographic and augmented reality systems, laser welding machinery and video communication systems. So says a new report coming out of the UK from insurance provider Direct Line Group. The Group carried out research into the British public’s perception of the auto repair business and teamed up with safety researchers Thatcham Research, smart city innovators DG Cities, and the Women’s Engineering Society to look at the changes that may become reality within the industry in the next 30 years. The research highlighted the perception problems the industry faces in the UK,

44 | Motor Trader May 2019

with nearly a third of Brits (29 per cent) admitting they don’t associate repair garages with engineering, demonstrating a lack of awareness that it is a highly skilled profession. The research also found that 26 per cent of Brits and less than 19 per cent of women said they would consider a job in a workshop. In a bid to help drive awareness of the diverse range of opportunities on offer, Direct Line Group and its partners list of high-tech innovations they predict will be a reality in auto repair centres be 2050: 1. Holographic and augmented reality (AR) technology 2. Advanced robotics to assist with manoeuvring and adjustment of vehicles

3. 3D printing of car parts to improve turnaround time for repairs 4. Ultra-connected workshops 5. Hyper clean work areas akin to laboratories 6. Self-diagnosing cars 7. Video communication technology for mechanics to speak with customers 8. Advanced laser welding 9. Space saving car storage 10. Innovative staff training areas for mechanics to learn as technology evolves 11. Mobile electric charging stations to keep vehicles batteries in peak condition Also considered were ultra-connected cars that could mean diagnosing car problems being as easy as the car itself telling the engineer what the issue is – sometimes even before anything has gone wrong. Professionals also foresee that driverless cars may even be able to drive themselves to the garage to be checked, meaning people won’t even need to leave their home to get their cars checked. Instead customers will be able to speak with mechanics via video calls. There are some interesting times ahead.

BRIDGESTONE JOINS INTERNATIONAL SPACE EXPLORATION MISSION BRIDGESTONE WILL TAKE part in an international space exploration mission together with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota). JAXA and Toyota have agreed to further cooperate on, and accelerate, their joint study of a manned pressurised rover that employs fuel cell electric vehicle technologies – a form of mobility the companies say is necessary for human exploration on the surface of the moon. The rover will, the companies add, have a total lunar-surface cruising range of more than 10,000 km. Bridgestone’s involvement in the mission will include researching the performance needs of tyres for use on these rovers. The company says says its knowledge will help explore mobility challenges, with the development of an Elastic Wheel to support the rover’s weight, acceleration and braking, minimise shock absorbance, and improve manoeuvrability. KIA HabaNiro Concept

KIA HABANIRO A SPICY NEW VISION FOR FUTURE OF EVS

K

IA MOTORS AMERICA (KMA) has unveiled its vision of the future of electric vehicles with this, the HabaNiro concept - a fully electric, all wheel drive, fourseater with a range of more than 480km with eAWD supplied by two electric motors, fore and aft, level5 autonomous mode, butterfly wing doors and some nice advanced tech. The team behind the concept say is it a

46 | Motor Trader May 2019

compact crossover utility vehicle only in terms of existing industry category language but it is actually an ‘all-electric Everything Car’ or ECEV – commuter, crossover, sport utility, state-of-the-art technology workroom and adventure vehicle. The EV chassis architecture allowed the wheels to be pushed to the corners and there are scissor-like butterfly wing doors that open to modern, high-tech interior.

Featured inside is a full-width front windscreen Heads Up Display (HUD) system controlled by an instrument panel that is a large interactive touchpad display with Sensory Light Feedback (SLF). A Technical Option Sharing System (TOSS) allows users to swipe and move vehicle options across the HUD screen. When HabaNiro’s part-time level5 autonomous driving system is engaged, Kia says the steering wheel and instrument panel retract forward to provide more room for the front occupants. Media or other entertainment can be displayed on the HUD video system. The concept features Kia’s new Real time Emotion Adaptive Driving (R.E.A.D.) System introduced earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show. Kia says that R.E.A.D. can optimise and personalise a vehicle cabin space by analysing a driver’s emotional state through artificial intelligence-based biosignal recognition technology. The technology monitors the driver’s emotional state and tailors the interior environment according to its assessment. R.E.A.D. also enables the HabaNiro’s Eye Tracking System (ETS) with 180° rear-view video display. The system uses its AI- based emotional intelligence to monitor when the driver looks up to the top of the windshield where conventional rear-view mirrors are located. The AI senses the driver’s need to see behind the vehicle and instantly activates the 180° rear-view video display.

RD COUPE MAKE: FORD MODEL: 1934 COUPE ENGINE: SUPERCHARGED 347 WINDSOR V8 OWNED BY: GRANT MALSEED

WORDS: LINDSAY SAUNDERS

F

OR ABOUT 31 years, this stunning 1934 Ford Coupe has been a part of Grant Malseed’s life. Buying the body of the Ford when he was just 28, Grant spent the better part of the next four years creating this rod, working in the cramped confines of a double garage at home. And in a testament to his skill and meticulousness, it was only last year that the car underwent a rebuild, and a pretty minor one at that. Grant is the owner and director of Superformance, one of the country’s top performance stores that’s been in business for 41 years. He took over the outfit in 2004, when he joined MTA Queensland, and has 52 | Motor Trader May 2019

evolved the business into a true onestop shop, handling every aspect of performance car builds and rebuilds. The business’ workforce, which has expanded from three to 17 since 2004, does motors, gearboxes, diffs, paint and panel, fabrication . . . the whole box and dice. They specialise in Australian classics and muscles, and American classics, pickups, street machines and muscle cars, and have worked on cars dating from 1923 to 2000. They’ve also further established their reputation as participants in two seasons of Rides Down Under Workshops Wars on the 7 Network nationally, with season three in the pipeline and expanding from a half-hour to hour format. The show has also now been sold internationally, so Superformance is set to be exposed to a U.S. audience, among

others, in the near future. Like many businesses, Superformance is a family affair with two sons involved; Todd, who runs the workshop, and Wade, who looks after stock control and ordering, and the website and eBay store, as well as wife Natalie, who takes care of the book-keeping and accounts. While his ’34 Ford coupe was not the first car he’d created, it was, at the time, the best he’d done so he held on to it – and he readily admits it’s partly a sentimental thing. “I started it when I was 28 and finished when I was 32,” says Grant. “I did it all single-handed in a double garage at home. “I’d done four or five cars before it but it was the nicest I’d done and I think that’s why I hung on to it. “In 2018 we did a rebuild – nothing May 2019 Motor Trader | 53

huge, more a basic cosmetic project. “We repainted the top half with the silver pinstripe and the green, plus swapped in a new engine. “It also has new tyres and rims, basically all to bring it up to date. “The car still has the original trim, transmission and diff. In fact, the black paint is original too.” And it’s looking damn good for a 30plus year old coat of paint. The car now boasts a 347 Windsor V8 with a 671 supercharger on top. It’s running a GM Turbo 350 transmission with a Ford adapter kit that Grant made, a Ford 9” diff, has rear-wheel disc brakes and sits on an independent polished stainless steel frame. It also has something you won’t see every day – Hurst Lightning Rods, multiple stick auto shifters that allow more control over the auto transmission and, Grant explained, are now somewhat of a collector’s item. The car also has a dickey seat so can legally carry four.

54 | Motor Trader May 2019

Unlike many of the business’ project, which average 18 months but can be closer to two years depending on the individual build, this update was a quick affair, with the car off the road for less than four weeks. Grant said the car had more than once played a role in illustrating why a top-quality build matters. “We show it to customers to demonstrate that if you do a build right, and look after the vehicle, it can last for many, many years,” he says. “It’s not a show car – the interior for example is still good but hey, its 28-plus years old – it’s a car to be driven, and while I haven’t been driving it as much as I’d like of late due to how busy we are with the business, it’s a car my wife Natalie and I use to go for a cruise, maybe to the Sunshine Coast, or on a club run.”

So what is it about these vehicles that keeps Grant interested and so obviously passionate about them? “They’re so much fun to drive – although they’re not very comfortable so on long runs you probably need to get out and

stretch about every two hours,” he says. “Tall guys usually only last about an hour. “The feet position is not great, as the well tapers in so there’s not a lot of legroom and you get cramped up. “But you don’t worry about that . . . it’s all about having a cool car and having fun with friends.” Grant’s love affair for performance began when he was just 14, helping his uncle, who lived next door in hometown Mt Gambier in South Australia, on an American Ford Fairlane. “We did a new engine, gearbox, swapped the swap, painted the car . . . the only thing I didn’t do myself was trim the car and I did that later with a mate when I was 21,” says Grant. “I still have that car too, although it is due for a rebuild.” Like the ‘34 Coupe, a Superformance rebuild will undoubtedly mean that Fairlane won’t be reaching the end of the road any time soon.

RIVIAN TO RECEIVE $US500 MILLION INVESTMENT FROM FORD

E

V PICK-UP TRUCK and SUV maker Rivian has announced an equity investment of $US500 million from Ford. In addition to the investment, the companies have agreed to work together to develop an all-new, next-generation battery electric vehicle for Ford’s growing EV portfolio using Rivian’s Skateboard platform. Rivian already has developed two cleansheet vehicles. The company’s launch products – the five-passenger R1T pickup and seven-passenger R1S SUV – will deliver up to 400-plus miles of range. Ford intends to develop a new vehicle using Rivian’s flexible skateboard platform. This is in addition to Ford’s existing plans to develop a portfolio of battery electric vehicles. As part of its previously

announced $11 billion EV investment, Ford already has confirmed two key fully electric vehicles: a Mustang-inspired crossover coming in 2020 and a zero-emissions version of the best-selling F-150 pickup. “As we continue in our transformation of Ford with new forms of intelligent vehicles and propulsion, this partnership with Rivian brings a fresh approach to both,” said Jim Hackett, Ford president and CEO. “At the same time, we believe Rivian can benefit from Ford’s industrial expertise and resources.” Rivian remains an independent company and the investment is subject to customary regulatory approval. Following Ford’s investment, Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president of Automotive, will join Rivian’s sevenmember board. May 2019 Motor Trader | 65

FASTEST NEWGENERATION LEXUS SPEEDS INTO AUSTRALIA

L

EXUS AUSTRALIA HAS announced the substantially revised RC F range will include a more affordable entry price plus sharp specs for the first RC F Track Edition. The entry price of the RC F has been reduced by $3600 to $134,129 while the RC F Track Edition is priced from $165,690. Three enhancement packages for the RC F will also be available, with the highest package offering upgrades otherwise exclusive to the limited RC F Track Edition. Lexus says that every new RC F features improved aerodynamics, stiffer and lighter suspension components, firmer steering control, a freer-breathing and lighter engine, more intuitive transmission and grippier tyres. New styling incorporates single-piece LED headlights and a wider grille with L-shaped mesh pattern. Enlarged frontside air breathers and new canard 'fins' on

the lower front bumper more accurately harness air. The RC F Track Edition has a front lower spoiler to further reduce front-end lift, and carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) side fins. The rear introduces sharper L-shaped tail-lights, vertical fins and a new diffuser - produced in CFRP for the RC F Track Edition, which further includes a CFRP fixed rear wing generating 26kg of downforce. The normally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 produces 351kW of power at 7100rpm and 530Nm of torque between 4800rpm and 5600rpm. Lexus says that a seven per cent-lighter machined intake manifold and new intake piping means the engine meets Euro 6 emissions standards while also providing more linear throttle response. A new, more solid rear engine mount has also

been developed which, the company says, enhances handling stability particularly at the cornering limit. The eight-speed automatic transmission debuts new AI-SHIFT control with greater intuition and, in Sport S+ mode, more aggressive downshifting. Lexus will offer standard launch control across the RC F range. The strength of the steering rack bushing has also been increased by 150 per cent to boost steering response and enhance front-wheel toe control, joining newly designed Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres to increase agility and driver feedback. The changes have also resulted in a reduced kerb weight of 15kg for the RC F. For the RC F Track Edition, highperformance Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brakes join 19-inch motorsport-inspired lightweight BBS alloy wheels to reduce unsprung mass by 25kg. A titanium exhaust further reduces weight of the RC F Track Edition by 6kg. The CFRP bonnet, roof, rear diffuser, lower rocker panel, front spoiler, rear wing and rear-seat brace also help deliver a 65kg total reduction for the RC F Track Edition, which has a kerb weight of 1715kg. The 0-100km/h performance of the RC F Track Edition is two-tenths quicker than the RC F at 4.3 seconds, making it the fastest Lexus offered since the LFA.

NEW VEHICLE SALES DECLINE IN APRIL ACCORDING TO THE Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), new vehicle sales figures for April 2019 totalled 75,550 units, an 8.9 per cent decrease on April 2018 when 82,930 sales were recorded. Sales figures so far this year totalled 344,088 units, an 8.1 per cent decrease on the same period in 2018. “The results for April are in line with trends for year-to-date 2019. We have seen a decrease of around eight per cent across the first four months of the year," said Tony Weber, CEO of the FCAI. “This decrease is the result of a number of factors in the Australian market, including the downturn in the housing market, the tightening of lending practices, environmental factors such as drought and flood, and of course the imminent Federal Government election." • Passenger vehicles totalled 23,816 sales or 31.5 per cent of the market • SUVs totalled 33,190 sales or 43.9 per cent of the market and • Light Commercial vehicles totalled 15,601 sales or 20.6 per cent of the market. Toyota claimed top spot with 15,135 sales, then Mazda with 7,644 sales, Hyundai with 6,469, Ford with 4,803, and Mitsubishi with 4,717. May 2019 Motor Trader | 67

ITH A FEDERAL election around the corner, there’s certainly been some focus on the Vocational Education and Training (VET) area, and in particular apprenticeships. Apprenticeships are the lifeblood of the automotive industry as it provides an entry point into the industry and develops skills for participants to make a prosperous career for themselves. I’d support anyone looking to get behind helping employers support more apprentices and helping apprentices themselves achieve their goal of getting a trade. It did get me thinking of what we offer to help achieve apprenticeship outcomes, and the services we put in place to meet our clients' training needs. Importantly, it’s the interaction we have with industry, and we achieve this by: • Encouraging feedback opportunities via our Weekly Industry Bulletin. • Encouraging client discussion and opinions via social media platforms.

A LEADER IN APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING AND THERE TO HELP EMPLOYERS AND APPRENTICES . . . IT’S VITAL THAT THERE’S A STRONG APPRENTICESHIP MODEL TO CARRY THE INDUSTRY FORWARD AND WE’LL BE THERE TO SUPPORT IT.”

Ultimately, this interaction has created a high level of performance in our training arrangements and we diligently measure success, such as independent validations and evaluations, industry recognition and business outcomes from training activity by: • Allocating an MTA Institute trainer to a student for the entire duration of their apprenticeship. This allows for strong relationships to develop, with majority of our trainers having been employed with the Institute for more than 7.5 years. • MTA Institute graduation ceremonies occurring bi-annually, celebrating the achievements of students who have successfully completed their apprenticeship. This is the only automotive graduation ceremony in Queensland for apprentices, their family and friends. • Monthly recognition for apprentices that have been performing at an exceptional level by awarding them the title of MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month. Apprentices of the Month form the candidates for the Apprentice of the Year award, which is announced at the annual MTA Queensland Industry Dinner. • Celebrating the success stories from our students. The 2017 Apprentice of the Year winner, who also volunteered on the MTAQ Racing Team Support Crew, had a dream to work in motor sport. He has since performed work experience at Triple Eight Race Engineering and has recently secured an overseas automotive scholarship – well done Elliot. I see the MTA Institute as a leader in apprenticeship training and there to help employers and apprentices. No matter who wins the upcoming election, it’s vital that there’s a strong apprenticeship model to carry the industry forward and we’ll be there to support it. May 2019 Motor Trader | 73

THE RISE OF MODERN VEHICLE DIAGNOSTICS MECHANICS TODAY ARE REQUIRED TO POSSESS A COMPREHENSIVE SKILL SET in order to service and repair the wide range of vehicles that are presented to their workshops. The key skill in the role of vehicle repairs is the ability of fault diagnosis. An analytical approach to the assessment of identifying a problem is a vital part of the job. Rapid and continuous developments in technology have seen the modern vehicle utilise advanced computer and electronic systems. The complexity of technology now integrated into vehicles requires the best diagnostic tools to obtain a trusted result.

SUCCESS IS BUILT WITH SP TOOLS SP Tools offers a broad range of high quality, accurate, and reliable diagnostic tools to provide the mechanic with precise readings and information for the vehicle system being assessed. 30 years of serving the automotive industry in Australia has seen SP Tools evolve into the market leader for automotive tools. By listening and taking on board their customer’s input, forging local and international links with world class manufacturers and suppliers, gaining invaluable experience in the participation with motorsport and a management team constantly researching to remain up-to-date with vehicle technologies, SP Tools brings to the automotive repairers market a selection of tools that outpace their competitors for quality, reliability, accuracy, features and value. Let’s look at a part of the range of diagnostic tools available from an SP Stockist, which include OBDII Code Readers, Digital Multimeters, Timing Lights, Circuit Testers, Battery Analysers, Battery Load Testers and Noid Lights.

DIGITAL MULTIMETERS A Digital Multimeter is an instrument that incorporates A/C and D/C meters, ammeter, and ohmmeter, and is a necessity for the Mechanic to troubleshoot a vehicle’s electrical system. The more common measured values are voltage (volts), current (amps) & resistance (ohms). Other circuits and sensors that can be included measure frequency (hertz), temperature (celsius), or test continuity and diodes. There are also multimeters that offer additional features specific for an automotive application that offer a tachometer (rpm), pulse (m/s), duty cycle (%) and dwell angle (degrees). TIMING LIGHTS

CIRCUIT TESTERS A circuit tester is a simple tool used to detect the presence (or absence) of voltage in a circuit. Circuit testers are designed to test up to a specific voltage (ie; 12v) or be able to check across a range of voltages (6v to 24v). Some testers have the added features of indicating polarity and being safe for testing computer circuits with no risk of damage to sensitive components. SHORT PROBE CIRCUIT TESTER

3-48v CIRCUIT TESTER

MEDIUM PROBE CIRCUIT TESTER

The two primary tasks of a timing light is for setting initial timing at idle to the manufacturer’s specifications, and setting total timing by using the adjustable advance timing function also set to the manufacturer’s specifications of rpm and degrees. The light is powered by the vehicle’s electrical system and a pulse is detected by an inducted pickup that clamps around the spark plug lead (normally the number one cylinder). An enhanced timing light offers extra features such as a tachometer, volt meter and dwell meter. ADVANCE TIMING LIGHT

It is called the ‘motor principle’ because this force changes electrical energy to mechanical energy via conductors placed within strong magnetic fields. These repel each other creating movement. Lines of force in the magnetic field force can be called flux. This force is created by groups of atoms aligning in the material. A bar magnet, for example, has the strength of the flux coming out each end, and these form close parallel loops in three dimensions around the magnet. Force does not move like electric current, but the lines of force do have direction. Magnetic flux cannot be insulated, and magnetic force will pass through anything if it is strong enough. However, there are materials that will slow down the

Materials that strongly resist magnetic force show what is known as reluctance. This can be compared to resistance within an electrical circuit. Air, for example, does not allow easy passage and can be considered to be high reluctance. Materials that allow magnetic force to pass easily through them are considered permeable. Iron, for example, is very permeable. Magnetic force lines tend to concentrate in permeable materials as force will always follow the path of least resistance.

HE ELECTRIC VEHICLE revolution continues to gather pace and the Italian car design firm Pininfarina has joined the charge with the astonishing Battista, an all-electric hypercar boasting not only stunningly good looks but some truly eye-watering performance stats that include a 0-100km/h time of under two seconds and a top speed of more than 350km/h. That performance comes courtesy of a whopping 1900bhp and 2300Nm of torque on tap. The lightweight Battista, which will have a range of 450km on a full charge, has a fullcarbon fibre monocoque with carbon fibre body panels. A 120kWh battery provides the grunt to four motors that independently distribute torque and power to each wheel. There are carbon-ceramic six-piston brakes front and rear and a brake regeneration system will, the company say, be built into the system. An active rear wing features an air brake system. The Battista sits on bespoke Pirelli P

Zero tyres and the driver will be able to electronically adjust the dynamic experience through multiple modes tuned to a range of driving scenarios. As is the case with many of the new generation of hypercars, there will be a limited production run – just 150 models in the Battista’s case. This rarity, coupled with top-of-the-line features and top-level performance will likely mean you’ll need the deepest of pockets to secure one.

MARKET WRAP

LOBAL MARKETS WERE up during March, outperforming domestic equities. The Chinese market was again the standout performer, as strong local PMIs indicated that the stimulus signalled by the central government late in 2018 is beginning to take effect. The UK market was also higher as they move closer to a potential deal to exit the European Union. The US continued its solid growth, with both major indices up on the back of optimism surrounding a potential trade deal. The Emerging Markets and Europe were less optimistic but still outperformed their Asian counterparts who struggled over the period. Domestically, the index was up again strongly, wrapping up its best quarter in nearly a decade. A-REITs were the strongest performers during the month as investors began pricing in lower interest rates for longer, with the potential for a cut in the near future. Communications and Consumer Staples also benefited from the bond-proxy-type trade, as the market rewarded companies with more predictable cash flows. Banks were the biggest drag on the index, as the lower interest rate environment adds to their list of potential headwinds. 88 | Motor Trader May 2019
