MESSAGE FROM ROYAL MTC’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the 29th Annual Lawyers Play at Royal MTC. We are absolutely thrilled to be back onstage LIVE after several years of disruption – from the cancellation in 2020, to our digital pivot last year! In fact, this will be the first in-person Lawyers Play since I became Artistic Director at MTC in 2019, and I’m thrilled to see what these thespian lawyers have in store for us! After many months of tireless preparation, singing and dancing up a storm, these lawyers are ready for this moment of glory when they finally meet their audience.
Kelly Thornton
Incidentally, before I came to MTC, I ran a Lawyer Show with the company that I led in Toronto. It was always one of my favourite events of the year and reminded me of why I got into the entertainment business in the first place. Seeing their passion and commitment is inspiring and it’s thrilling to see these lawyers walk onto the stage and shine. I salute our cast for stepping away from their desks and out of their comfort zone to thrill us with their talent. I am so grateful to the Manitoba Bar Association, 300 Main and Lawton Partners for all their support of the Lawyers Play; to Jillian and Danny for making the magic happen, and Chuck and Tori for helming the ship. This is a wonderful event for Royal MTC and the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, and for the entire legal community. Bravo and thanks for joining us!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE MANITOBA BAR ASSOCIATION I first want to welcome everyone to this in-person production of The World Goes ‘Round. With the backdrop of two years of social distancing and cancellation of in-person events, we should all take a moment to soak in how truly great it is to be able to attend and participate in this production. Second, I want to acknowledge the fantastic partnership which has evolved between the Manitoba Bar Association (MBA) and the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (Royal MTC) over the last three Ian Scarth decades. This year’s production is the 29th coproduction between Royal MTC and the MBA. Due to this collaboration, the show continues to go on and has become a celebrated event in the legal community. Each year, a cast made up entirely of lawyers, law students, judges, and other members of the legal community devote their time and energy to put their dramatic skills on display in a spectacular show. On behalf of the MBA, I would like to thank the cast and crew for their tremendous contribution toward the success of this partnership. It is because of your incredible volunteer efforts that we continue to raise funds for Royal MTC and showcase one of the ways the legal profession gives back to the community, for which we should all be proud. To date, the MBA has raised over $1,100,000 for Royal MTC. I would also like to thank the Director, Jillian Willems, Music Director, Danny Carroll, the staff of Royal MTC, the Lawyers Play Committee members and all the sponsors. Thanks to the support and efforts of all these people and sponsors, the show continues to go on. Finally, thanks to all of those in attendance for your support and the support of your family, friends, colleagues, the MBA and Royal MTC. Now, sit back and get ready for a great show! Ian Scarth

ARTISTS Kathrine Basarab
Jessica Cogan
Cast
Cast
After a seven-year absence, Kathrine is pleased to be back for her sixth MBA/ Royal MTC co-production. Past credits include Chicago (2008), The Producers (2010), Gypsy (2011), Legally Blonde (2013), and Spelling Bee (2015). By day, a Crown Attorney with the Manitoba Prosecutions Service. By night (at least for the length of the show run), a barista, Mama Morton, the object of Shirley Devore’s affection, and…a tap dancer? Maybe a couple of other surprises, too. But it would hardly be a surprise if given away here. Big thank you to the artistic team and the crew for their sunny optimism and tireless work. Bigger thank you to family and friends for once again supporting this creative adventure. Biggest thank you to Andriy, Adam, and Boris – love, love and love.
Jennifer Bird Cast
Jessica is thrilled to be performing in her ninth Royal MTC/MBA production after an 11-year hiatus. Jessica started her love of these productions 23 years ago by playing Chava in Fiddler on the Roof. Other favourite roles include Rizzo in Grease, Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Rachel in Inherit the Wind, Mama Morton in Chicago and Tessie Tura in Gypsy. Jessica has so enjoyed singing with her castmates and being creative with other people again after two crazy COVID-filled years. Thank you to the incredible production and artistic teams of Royal MTC and to the hardworking cast of TWGR for their long hours of rehearsal and camaraderie. Having to sing and dance while wearing masks is no joke and all of you are inspiring. A special shout out to Rachel, Cogie and Benji for your constant love and support. Joel, you are my rock and if there’s one thing we’ve learned together it’s that “...the planet spins and the world goes round and round.” The four of you make my world go round and I love you.
Jennifer is excited to perform in her second Lawyers Play. Many thanks to the wonderful creative and production teams, as well as to the cast, who persevered through COVID-19 restrictions to make this a fun and memorable experience. It’s great to be back doing something “live” like this! Jennifer would also like to thank her friends, family and WCB colleagues for their support. You really are an amazing group! And a special thanks to Malcolm, Alice and Frances, who haven’t seen as much of me during April and May – couldn’t do this without you. Enjoy the show! may 2022

ARTISTS Paul Cooper
Tashia Dreger

Cast
This may come as a surprise to some, but the last few years have been … weird. Although this is Paul’s ninth (I know, I know – “THIS guy again!”) show, it was the first with a Zoom audition, and rehearsals in KN95 masks. (If you’ve never sung in a non-surgical mask, try it – not gross at all.) It is also the first with no “acting” – or at least no more than the kind Paul does every day; acting like he knows what he’s doing. And if Paul carries off appearing like he knows what he’s doing, it is only a testament to the talent and enthusiasm of Jillian, Danny, Eric, Chuck and all the Royal MTC professionals who are expert at making things seem more than they are. Coupled with a committed, talented and fun bunch of legal professionals giving their all, any noticeable gaps in maintaining the illusion are his responsibility alone. So many thanks and so much love to Anne and Declan: you really do make my World Go Round.
Tashia joins the cast of The World Goes ‘Round for her fifth Royal MTC/MBA production. She could not be happier to be a part of live theatre again, and with such a talented group! She is so grateful to the cast and crew (especially Chuck, Jillian, Danny and Eric) for their dedication and care in keeping everyone safe, happy, and focused in rehearsals. When she isn’t singing, dancing, or skating, Tashia works in the litigation department at Canada Life. She can often be found in her home office with a cat in her lap. Feel free to find her after the show should you have any follow-up questions about the cat. Tashia wants to thank her friends and family for their love and support. Their patience is seemingly boundless, particularly during rehearsal season. Specific thanks to her sister, Natalie, who taught her that being an adult and being childish don’t have to be mutually exclusive, and that you should always make time to play. This one’s for you, Nat.
Phillip Cramer Cast
Phillip did not serve as an ambulance driver during the Spanish Civil War. However, he has worked as a journalist, power station operator, surveyor, construction worker, safety manager and lawyer. His interests include music, mathematics, physics, history and art. Phillip has two adult children who, amazingly, still speak to him.

Alicia is thrilled to take part in her very first Lawyers Play, fulfilling a lifelong desire to perform in a musical. When she isn’t singing, playing tennis or constructing LEGO with her six-year-old, Alicia practices civil litigation with the Department of Justice Canada. Alicia would like to thank her parents for playing Andrew Lloyd Webber on repeat throughout her childhood and paying for all those expensive music lessons. Also, she would like to thank her wife Jodi and son Felix for their support and never-ending love.

Cast
Caleigh is thrilled to be joining the cast of The World Goes ‘Round in her third Lawyers Play. Caleigh practices criminal defence at Brodsky, Amy & Gould. Prior to attending law school, she received a musical theatre diploma from Randolph College for the Performing Arts in Toronto. She has appeared in numerous productions over the years and is always grateful when she can return to the stage. She thanks Jillian, Danny, Eric, Chuck and everyone else working to make this event possible. Now more than ever, we need to come together in harmony. Love to friends, family, and hope you enjoy the show!

Benji is thrilled to be performing in her third Lawyers Play. She previously appeared onstage in Mamma Mia! and virtually in Picasso at the Lapin Agile. She is very excited to be back in person and to live out her longstanding fantasy of tap dancing on a stage. Benji recently left her criminal defence practice to work as an Investigator at the Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth. She would like to thank her family, friends, colleagues and cats for their support and congratulate the cast and crew on a great show!
This is Deanna’s first Royal MTC/MBA performance and she is thrilled to hit the stage to perform some of her favourite musical numbers. As her talents lie more in singing than dancing, Deanna is extremely grateful to the experienced and talented cast members and the Royal MTC crew for their patience and support as she took on choreography. A big thanks go to her family and friends who encouraged her to audition and who supported her throughout the rehearsal season. When she isn’t singing, Deanna practices law as in-house counsel at Manitoba Hydro.

ARTISTS Zilla Jones Cast
This is Zilla’s third Lawyers Play, following her hair’s star role in Legally Blonde and her turn as jury foreperson in Twelve Angry Jurors. As the holder of an Honours degree in vocal performance, she sang opera in four provinces and the US before law school, and she is always thrilled to be singing. When she isn’t practicing criminal defence and human rights law with Jones Law Office, providing anti-racist education to various organizations, or busy with her kids’ many activities, Zilla is also an award-winning fiction writer. All praise to the ancestors and the Most High.
Ashley Kaufmann Cast
Ashley is delighted to be making her Royal MTC/MBA debut in The World Goes ‘Round! After playing the role of “stagemom” to fiancé and fellow cast member Leo Palay during Mamma Mia! last year, she figured she had better put her money (money, money, money...) where her mouth is and join the cast of the Lawyers Play in 2022. Ashley is grateful for the opportunity to dust off her tap shoes and indulge her obsession with showtunes in front of a live audience. When she’s not in a noisy hall where there’s a nightly brawl, Ashley spends her days as Legal Counsel for the Public Guardian and Trustee of Manitoba. Ashley would like to thank the incredibly talented cast and crew, especially Jillian and Danny, for their hard work and patience throughout the lead-up to the 12
show. Special thanks to Ashley’s family and friends for their support from prep-steps to today, and to her loving partner, Leo, who leaves her feeling “How Lucky Can You Get?” each and every day.
David Kroft Cast
The World Goes ‘Round is not my first Lawyers Play (I think I sported hair as Mendel in 1999’s Fiddler on the Roof) but is the first to have emerged while masking, distancing, occasionally quarantining, and, to add to the joy, enduring a blizzard. A weird experience. Despite, and perhaps because of, these challenges it has been remarkably joyous to break free from two years of isolation to “put on a show” that, hopefully, will entertain and raise funds to further secure Royal MTC’s legacy as one of Canada’s most important regional theatres. Thanks to the creative team (the real talent) who managed to squeeze out of me what little I have to offer and shape an unruly hodgepodge of lawyers into something resembling, if only for a few nights, a cohesive theatre company. Ellen, Julia, Sam and Adam – love always and thanks for indulging me.

Cast
Melanie is thrilled to be part of her second Royal MTC/MBA production. She previously appeared in Mamma Mia! (Ali). Many thanks to the lawyers at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP who reached out and encouraged her to audition (read: told her she had to find a hobby). Prior to attending law school, Melanie was involved in the performing arts and has appeared in a number of productions. Thank you to the incredibly talented and patient cast and crew for embracing her “creative” energy and laughing along with her during both videoconference and inperson rehearsals. Special thanks to her friends and family for the support and for never complaining when asked to go over lyrics and their willingness to lie about how great her tap dancing skills are.
Catherine is thrilled to be appearing in her first MBA Lawyers Play! A current 3L student at Robson Hall, she is thrilled to be making her return to the stage as a graduate of the Music Theatre Performance Degree program at Sheridan College in 2016. Prior to returning home to pursue law school, Catherine was working as a singer/actor/dancer in Toronto with various local theatre companies. She is elated to be returning to Toronto this summer to article with Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP. Big thanks to mom, dad and all of her family and friends for their endless support!
Hayley Main Cast
Joel Lebois Cast
Joel is delighted to be reprising the role of “Grumpy Garbage Neighbour” in this production, a role he originated at his home institution (Joel’s Actual House Theatre). When not playing a caffeinated bellhop/ housecoat enthusiast, Joel can be found gaming, napping, floating very slowly on West Hawk Lake, and eating lots of good cheese. Back for his second Royal MTC/ MBA show, Joel is thrilled by the lack of high heels this time around, but saddened by the lack of sequins (and Gruyere).
14
Hayley is thrilled to be involved in her seventh Royal MTC/MBA production, and particularly happy to be back with this group of great people after a theatredeprived couple of years. When she has a break from tap dancing and learning to rollerblade, Hayley spends her weekdays as legal counsel with Manitoba Public Insurance. She is incredibly grateful to Scott for taking care of their three wild, awesome little humans while she attends rehearsals. Hugs and kisses to Fancy Face, Master Bodhi and Clarky Man.

Many lawyers are drawn to acting by their experience performing in the courtroom. Leo, a corporate tax solicitor at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP, was drawn to the stage by other means. Leo developed his taste for the performing arts at Camp Massad, a summer camp that emphasizes culture, drama, song and dance. Leo would like to especially thank the love of his life, fiancée, and co-star Ashley for joining him in this musical and teaching him the proper way to box-step. Leo thanks his family and friends for putting up with his singing practice and providing their support to Royal MTC!
Sandi Phillips
Jodi is honoured to be making her debut in the Lawyers Play. When not rehearsing or performing with this talented bunch, Jodi is attempting to stay sane in law school and just completed her second year at Robson Hall. Despite this being her first time performing as part of the Royal MTC/MBA production, Jodi is not a stranger to the stage. You may have seen her performing with the local Winnipeg band Yes We Mystic or belting Alanis Morrisette at Agit Karaoke Bar. Thanks to the cast and crew for being so welcoming, to her parents for forcing her into music lessons for all of those years, and to the rest of her family and friends for their support and patience.

Nalini Reddy Cast
This is Sandi’s fifth appearance in the Lawyers Play (previous shows: Spelling Bee, La Cage aux Folles, Twelve Angry Jurors, Mamma Mia!). It is always a joy and a privilege to participate in this show but especially so this year. Sandi is grateful to the Royal MTC team for their patience and encouragement. Her heartfelt appreciation goes to Chuck McEwen whose care and diligence kept us safe. She thanks her employer, Manitoba Hydro for supporting her volunteer efforts with a donation to Royal MTC and her biggest thanks go to her most important audience, James, Matthew and Laura, without whose love and support, she could not indulge her delusions of thespian grandeur!

Nalini, who practises immigration and refugee law at Gindin Segal Law, is appearing in her 10th Lawyers Play! Appropriately, this one encompasses a variety of characters, including her fave, Velma Kelly from Chicago. She is grateful to her parents for the music and dance lessons (who could’ve predicted they’d find their way to a stage populated by LAWYERS AND JUDGES??) and sends the giantest hugs to her boys – Brad Regehr (Q.C.) (really) (it had to be said), Kieran and Sanjay – for their support and patience. Finally, Nalini wants to thank everyone involved in the show and congratulate her castmates on their fantastic performances. Enjoy!

Darcia Senft Cast
In these strange and very troubled times, there are many existential questions, none of which involve how best to channel Michigan J. Frog (“Hello my Baby, Hello my Honey, Hello my Ragtime Gal”) on the stage of the Warehouse. But, after the pandemic taught us to never again take for granted the magic of live theatre, Darcia jumped at the opportunity to tread the boards once again with friends in the legal community. Previous roles include Roxie Hart (Chicago), Sally Bowles (Cabaret), Sandy (Grease), Rona (Spelling Bee), Paulette (Legally Blonde), Hodel (Fiddler on the Roof) and Sarah Brown (Guys & Dolls). By day, Darcia sings a different tune at the Law Society where she works as General Counsel and Director of Policy and Ethics. Darcia thanks Gary and her family and friends for encouraging her in all of her pursuits – musical or otherwise. To her Mom and Dad who are watching from above (the best seats in the house), she says a heartfelt thank you for the many

years of accordion lessons. She dedicates this performance to the brave people of her ancestral land, who play the violin in bomb shelters or sing their beloved national anthem while staring down the barrel of a tank. As the world goes ‘round, they inspire us with their fierce resistance and unstoppable resilience. Slava Ukraini!

Eric feels delighted and privileged to be on the bench for his 14th Royal MTC/MBA production. In his day gig, Eric practices as a child and adolescent psychiatrist. With affection and gratitude for Royal MTC and MBA’s co-conspirators in this project and my family. In loving memory of dear ones who are in the “place where lost things go.”
Music Theatre International Licensing Agency Music Theatre International (MTI) is one of the world’s leading theatrical licensing agencies, granting theatres from around the world the rights to perform the greatest selection of musicals from Broadway and beyond. Founded in 1952 by composer Frank Loesser and orchestrator Don Walker, MTI is a driving force in advancing musical theatre as a vibrant and engaging art form. MTI works directly with the composers, lyricists and book writers of these musicals to provide official scripts, musical materials and dynamic theatrical resources to over 70,000 professional, community and school theatres in the US and in over 60 countries worldwide. MTI is particularly dedicated to educational theatre, and has created special collections to meet the needs of various types of performers and audiences. MTI’s Broadway Junior™ shows are 30- and 60-minute musicals for performance by elementary and middle school-aged performers, while MTI’s School Editions are musicals annotated for performance by high school students. MTI maintains its global headquarters in New York City with additional offices in London (MTI Europe) and Melbourne (MTI Australasia). 24
