JOHN HIRSCH MAINSTAGE TOM HENDRY WAREHOUSE TOM HENDRY WAREHOUSE SEASON SPONSOR Adapted by Catherine Bush From the novel by Alexandre Dumas reWork Productions presents Written and Performed by Daniel MacIvor

The timeless phrase lifted from the pages of Alexandre Dumas’ iconic novel The Three Musketeers is, of course, “All for one, and one for all.” It’s been overused, but at its essence this message continues to resonate. Perhaps even more so today. Essentially, it’s a pledge of allegiance to each other; that each individual should act for the benefit of the group, and the group should act for the benefit of the individual. Or in more specific terms, if one person is facing problems, then it is a problem for the whole community. This care and commitment to each other is perhaps the reason this novel has remained so popular for over three centuries. Of the many themes in Dumas’ work: the idealism of youth; courage, bravery and justice; friendship and loyalty remain at its heart and reminds us of our collective responsibility to one another.

In Let’s Run Away this idea resonates in a different way, as Peter, the central character in the play has not benefitted from a system that has cared for him. Daniel MacIvor’s potent story sees the cumulative effect of abandonment and isolation. It’s a solo show about aloneness and its impact, even as he interfaces with a myriad of characters. But the art of Daniel and Daniel, and their long history of collaboration, lies essentially in an enduring friendship that has borne lush fruit. This commitment to each other and to the body of work they’ve created over several decades is a testament to the power of allegiance. To care for each other on our individual and collective journeys is at the heart of these two stories.

Thanks for joining us,

A Word About Alexandre Dumas, père and The Three Musketeers

Alexandre Dumas was born in 1802 into a world of possibility. Like many gifted young men of the 19th century, he didn’t have to inherit his life’s work — not his unscrupulous grandfather’s titles or his grandmother’s bondage. He also didn’t have to inherit his military father’s profession or his failures. But he inher ited the general’s penchant for telling a fascinating tale. From his mother’s stories of his father’s strength, cunning, and loyalty to France, Dumas may have developed his ideas about the emotional, even visceral nature of patriotism and its frequent one-sidedness. The country you love may not love you in return — a reality faced by so many black and

AND WILLIAM SMITH COLLEGES

brown soldiers in the last few centuries, including the father of Alexandre Dumas. Thomas-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie (1762-1806) was the son of a Marquis and his enslaved concubine, Marie Cesette Dumas. His military exploits, personal sacrifices, and sufferings were ignored by his country and by fellow general Napoleon once the latter attained political power. He died ill, denied his military pension after having been a pris oner of war. His son, Alexandre Dumas, may have learned to view concepts such as heroism and patriotic sacrifice with some cynicism through the awareness of his father’s tragic story.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS 8 Ovation november/december 2022
“Known for acts of reckless daring in and out of battle, Alex Dumas (père) was every bit as gallant and extraordinary as D’Artagnan and his comrades rolled into one.” — TOM REISS, AUTHOR OF THEBLACKCOUNT
The cast of The Three Musketeers, Mainstage 1983. PHOTOGRAPHER UNKNOWN

The Three Musketeers is the first install ment of a series based on a scrap of history, which he found in a novel and developed into four new ones exploring the character D’Artagnan who tries to live a heroic life in an age of cynical back-room intrigue. Instead of becoming a famous hero, loaded with benefits, he essentially becomes the sword of those who engage in intrigue but don’t fight. He and his spectacular exploits are routinely forgotten, and his extraor dinary shrewdness and daring are demanded, used, and wholly unappreci ated by the powerful. It’s a story Dumas knew well. It was, in many ways, the story of his father’s life and the novelist’s wry humour highlights the pathos that underlies the swashbuckling excitement and adventure.

Dumas’ most compelling character in this famous novel isn’t even a musketeer. In fact, he seldom uses a musket. Instead of riding triumphantly into the novel in a cloud of dust, our improbable hero lopes toward Paris on a skinny yellow horse. Initially, Dumas wanted to call the novel Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, after the characters he encountered in Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras’ Memoirs de Monsieur D’Artagnan (1700). Neither this title nor the one ultimately chosen

mention D’Artagnan, though adapters of this text universally present him as the lead character. The title wasn’t even Dumas’ idea, but its absurdity amused him and he decided it augured well for the success of the book, which appeared in the daily newspaper Le Siècle in 1844. There are four friends, not three and, though D’Artagnan becomes a muske teer by the end, Aramis quits the troop in favour of the Church, so there are still three musketeers and four friends whose interests and ambitions begin to diverge by the end.

Alexandre Dumas created famous plots and characters that live in books and in our imaginations. His most famous novels have never been out of print. In a plethora of forms, they have graced many a stage and screen. Catherine Bush’s adaptation of The Three Musketeers captures the loyalty, shrewdness, head strong nature, and adventurous spirit of D’Artagnan and his musketeer friends, and includes an entertaining moment near the beginning in which the narration of their last brawl becomes a story they can watch unfold as they create, step into, and inhabit it. Dumas, who once unsuccessfully adapted this work for the stage, would undoubtedly have approved the wit and complexity of the device.

SYNOPSIS – D’Artagnan has arrived from the country dreaming to join the King’s Musketeers, and is immediately swept up in the swashbuckling lives of the legendary three, Athos, Porthos and Aramis. When scandal threatens the French court, D’Artagnan and his friends must risk everything to stop Cardinal Richelieu, the second most powerful man in France, and his cunning spies Rochefort and Lady de Winter from revealing a dangerous secret. Swords and wits clash, and D’Artagnan learns that the world might not be as black and white as he once believed. With war (and love) on the line, it goes without saying, “all for one, and one for all!”

Falling in Love with Live Theatre

Every year, thousands of students fall in love with theatre just like you did – by attending a play at Royal MTC.

In our last full season, thanks to our incredible community of donors, we were able to welcome over 4,000 students to student-only matinee performances. Schools from all over Manitoba came to share in the act of imagining – including students from Nelson House, located 75km west of Thompson. Unfortunately, not every student has the opportunity to come to the theatre.

Will you be a hero for the next generation? Today, you can help transform the lives of young people by giving them the lifelong gift of theatre, no matter where they live and what they can afford. We are a community bound by our love of live performance, let’s invite young people to join us.

Let’s laugh together. Let’s cry together. Let’s imagine together.

With a gift to Royal MTC, you’re creating opportunities for students across our province to experience live performance. The students who come to shows today and partic ipate in youth programs are our future artists and audiences. Reduced ticket prices, bus subsidies, and free programs remove the barriers that keep young people from experiencing the joys of theatre. With your help we can keep these programs going.

Will you raise your sword and be a hero for the next generation? Students will have you to thank for transforming their lives.

You can make the impossible possible with your donation by mail, phone or at royalmtc.ca/donate. For more information, contact Brendan McKeen, Individual Giving Manager, at 204 954 6412 or bmckeen@royalmtc.ca.

Our Method

Daniel MacIvor and I began work on this play many years ago.

Our first title was 7, because that is all we knew about the show – that it was the seventh solo show we would create together.

Our work began in Banff in November of 2017. We worked in a studio at the Banff Centre, with a large window looking out at the mountains. Daniel sat in a chair, with a microphone in hand (for some reason we were attracted to the microphone, perhaps because it created a kind of artifice, or theatricality, where none existed). He talked and talked, and I listened and listened. I wrote down what he said, or at least what I thought interesting, editing, and perhaps changing some details along the way. Then I would tell Daniel what he said –another kind of editing process. Daniel would listen to me and then he would write down what I said he said, which became another editing process. We did this for days, talking and listening, and some of the content for what would become this play was born.

Some time later we worked in Toronto, and the title of the play became Good , and then A Good Week . Our work method (if it can be called a method) did not change. We would talk about ideas, perhaps analyze the latest stories told by Daniel, or I might suggest he further pursue a line of thought or character, we would laugh a lot and complain and enjoy each other, except when we didn’t, for the reasons people don’t enjoy each other, mostly fear. Material developed, became more focused, some

ideas didn’t last, and by the end of our work in Toronto, we had a new title: The Extraordinary Pickle and Tru . That title didn’t last very long either.

Our next work session was in Guysborough, Nova Scotia. We had the beginnings of the structure of the play you will see today. As structure forms, so do doubts, and fears mount – that we are on the wrong track, that we’ve missed something, misunderstood the material, the moment, the reason for doing theatre. As often happens, we, the creators of the show, were para lysed and fearful. At one point Daniel, standing on the stage, handed me his notebook with a phrase circled – “Let’s run away.” I said “good title.” That became the title, and some solid infor mation for Daniel to use as he continued to develop the story of Let’s Run Away.

I am often mystified as to how we do our work. I wonder if it’s all chance, if we have any method at all. How did we arrive at Let’s Run Away?

Recently I was on the phone with Daniel – we talk on the phone most days – and I was telling him about a very disturbing dream I had. I was aware of how silent he was as he listened to me, even over the phone I felt the depth of his listening, the stillness of his ears, his receptiveness, his love. He listened deeply. It struck me that the foundation of our method is deep listening.

One More

Some years ago I retired from doing this kind of work, solo shows. That was three shows ago and now here it is our seventh solo. Six years ago when we were winding down the run of our last – our sixth solo –Who Killed Spalding Gray? I approached Daniel Brooks and asked if he would be interested in doing one more. I always say “one more.” I suppose I’ve been saying that since after we did our first show House in the late ‘ 80s – that one more was Here Lies Henry. The one more after that was Monster and then one more was Cul-de-sac – and that was the really “one more” one more where I retired from the form and we shut down da da kamera, the company that made them all. But then life changed and dreams crashed and I got sober and woke up in a strange

new land and all I could imagine doing was going back to the thing I felt I knew best. The solo. Thankfully Brooks was on board for one more, and that became This Is What Happens Next – our “true story” solo of stories that weren’t entirely true but close. And then one more was Who Killed Spalding Gray? and that’s when something happened that had been coming for a long time – my heart opened up. Brooks had been pushing for that I think, all those years. It’s prob ably what kept bringing me back to the form, because the ironic thing is, of all the kinds of work I’ve done, the solo is where I’ve felt the least alone. It takes a lot of people to prop one guy up on stage – their names are all here in the program. And there is something about being here in the room, alone with you, the audience, where all is acknowledged – the reality of the artifice, the truth of the game, the lie we all believe in – that feels like the point. And I don’t just mean of theatre. But I’m not going to get precious and high-falutin – I’ve got in trouble doing that in program notes before. Since then I haven’t really written notes, but this time it seemed fitting. And so I just want to thank all the people who’s names are in this program and especially my brother Brooks for giving me permission all these years, for helping me to finally feel what I’ve always known. Here’s to one more.

SYNOPSIS – Peter is not the main character of his story. He has however lived a “colourful life,” (but it’s nothing to be proud of) with many treasured possessions to take us along on the journey. One thing in particular, is the manuscript of an unpublished memoir. He didn’t write it, but it belongs to him. Don’t worry, he’s not going to read all of it. Just the parts about him.

MANY THANKS TO OUR VOLUNTEERS!

Act Like a Star!

Everyone at the theatre is part of the show. Yes, even you. You want to be a star, don’t you? These tips will make you a stand-out performer (in a good way)!

Scents and Sensibility

Many theatre lovers experience adverse medical reactions from scented products. Please consider others before using scented products.

Park Your Mobile Device

We know something interesting is happening on social media. It always is. But your neighbours want to watch the play. Please turn off all mobile devices.

The Sound of Silence

Our theatre has great acoustics. So when you’re talking during the show, everyone can hear you. Your neighbours, the ushers and even the actors. We want you to talk about the show but at intermission or after the final bows.

We’re always happy to see you at the theatre. Thank you for coming!
