e were established in 2010, and our aim has always been to provide the med-tech industries with a platform from which device manufacturers – and in particular the design engineering community – can learn about the latest technology and services available from the allimportant supply chain. Additionally, we also orchestrate and match-make a number of other relevant industry stakeholders – this in order to help facilitate collaboration, funding, research, innovation and good business through the industry. Our publishing We still see a print publication as a very viable and much wanted medium. In an increasingly digital world our research overwhelmingly indicated that a print publication was the most desirable method of content delivery for the majority (over 80%) of our target audience in the UK and Ireland. Our subscribers in the UK & Ireland have the choice to receive a print copy or a digital edition to their inbox, both free of charge. We currently have over 6000 such subscribers, a figure which we shall certainly maintain in order to be able to deliver quality content to a quality audience. By virtue of our digital edition of the magazine and our new App, we also have a growing international reach from the USA to ASIA of around 2000 subscribers. These subscribers are typically generated via our leading website www.med-techinnovation.com which has a vibrant mix of news content, blogs, archive technical articles, jobs, events, and a suppliers directory.

Get vital research at the MTI EXPO 2016 Conference The UK’s biggest Med-Tech Event benefits greatly from a having a top notch conference on both days. We go behind the organising scenes with our partner Medilink East Midlands (MEM) to learn about the upcoming highlights on April 20-21. this conference, this will primarily be the owner/managers of Med-Tech businesses, but the event is also likely to attract a diverse range of delegates from across the life science sector. edilink East Midlands (EM) is a founding member of Medilink UK, a federation of regional organisations who have been providing business support to the life sciences sector for two decades. Digital health: the cost of acute care in the UK is becoming prohibitive, so care will increasingly take place in the community. Digital health is seen as a major contributor to reducing NHS costs, moving healthcare into the community, integrating primary and acute care and making NHS systems more efficient. The NHS Five Year Forward View and the Accelerated Access Review (AAR), both recognise the contribution of Digital Health to the future success of the NHS. During the conference Stephanie Parker, Digital Health Strategy Lead from the Office of Life Sciences will address the growing challenges that industry will face. Costa Philippou, Business Development Manager at Medilink East Midlands says that ‘getting the right balance between these elements is probably one of the biggest challenges for an event organiser. Places are strictly limited, however, so if you wish to book into a clinic session, please get in contact with us as soon as you can.’ The internationally recognized medical device industry quality management systems (QMS) standard, has been under revision since 2010. The published standard was available on 25 February 2016. The standard ISO 13485 (Medical devices) is a requirement for regulatory purposes and at MTI EXPO 2016, the British Standards Institute (BSI) will provide a free guide to all of the updates and changes. These are extensive. For example, the new revision ISO 13485:2016 will NOT align with the revised high level structure, Annex SL, used in ISO 9001:2015. For those medical device manufacturers who hold dual certification, you will need to be aware and start to consider and develop transition plans to allow for a smooth migration from previous versions of the standards to the two newly released versions. Cross referencing material will be available within the standard which will correlate the clauses of ISO 9001:2008 to the clauses of ISO 9001:2015. As with previous versions of ISO 13485, the standard will also contain cross referencing tables, i.e. ISO 13485:2016 with ISO 9001:2015. High value technology is another ‘hot button’ within the medical sphere. MTI EXPO 2016 is delighted to have secured the services of the UK’s High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult – who will outline some of their success and case study work in the med-tech sectors. The UK is a global leader in innovation, but much of this innovation ends up being commercialised and produced outside of the country. Bridging the highrisk and high-cost journey from innovation to UKmanufactured reality, is key to commercial success. Seminar lessons from the HVM’s seven centres across the country will illustrate the full range of manufacturing technology capabilities. Much of the technology innovation developed in sectors such as aerospace and automotive, now successfully transfers to medical technologies also. The HVM Catapult will therefore introduce the technology innovation opportunities it offers to the medtech sector, and will share the stage with a number of med-tech companies who successfully work with the Catapult. The HVM works with businesses of all sizes and many sectors in order to help turn ideas into commercial applications by addressing the gap in, and accelerating the activity between technology concept and commercialization. Boddingtons back to enjoy MTI EXPO Nowhere are med-tech manufacturing services as much in demand as in the highly specified world of cleanroom injection moulding.

ittle wonder then that leading practitioner Boddingtons returns to MTI EXPO 2016 for further business. The company has increased its med-tech turnover from last year, has garnered yet another Plastics Industry Award (for Braidlock - a med-tech device) and has high expectations for further enquiries and orders in the healthcare and medical fields. Andy Tibbs, Managing Director, says that ‘Boddingtons had a fantastic experience at EXPO 2015 last year. We attracted a very significant batch of interesting and solid enquiries, many of which entered into our gated product introduction process. The net result was an increased in new business that is now a healthy part of our overall company growth.’ Tibbs adds that ‘successful manufacturers today not only need to make a great product. Increasingly they need to master the art of marketing – to see and be seen – and to clearly communicate services, strengths and benefits to target markets. As a company we are therefore walking our marketing talk as part of our ambitious growth trajectory for the next five years. that ‘we are delighted to have a key player such as Boddingtons once again showing its services and capabilities at EXPO. The world of injection moulding – contracted manufacturing services for healthcare – is very much at home within the EXPO; exposed to all levels of the supply chain.’ Tibbs reflects that ‘most people realize that medtech business generally provides opportunity for better margins. The real benefit, however, is that once established, med-tech provides a much more stable and sustainable future.’ So what are the secrets in winning that med-tech business? ‘Open-mindedness is key,’ says Tibbs. ‘No company is too small or too big for us to do business with. Right from the outset we made a point of working with start-ups who specifically demonstrated both drive, initiative and strong intellectual property.’ And a number of these start-ups are now beginning to produce significant sales. This includes Arc Medical, on behalf of whom Boddingtons won the Industrial Product Design of the Year Plastics Industry Award. Boddingtons also makes it easier for clients by invariably handling legal responsibilities for the products it makes. ‘We do this for a variety of reasons’ notes Tibbs, ‘and it also sharpens up our own business and manufacturing practices to a very competitive level.’ One physical manifestation of this growth can now be seen in building work at the Marden-based site with a doubling of factory size. ‘Come and see us EXPO 2016,’ says Tibbs. ‘There is no aspect of med-tech product design and manufacture that we are not versed in. Sample new materials at MTI EXPO 2016 The field of new materials for med-tech and healthcare is a growing and important one. Newcomer to EXPO 2016, Dugdale, is please to be showing off its antimicrobial compounds at the show. These are set to open up new markets for PVC based medical applications and products.

owerby Bridge-based Dugdale has perfected its antimicrobial compounding technology and is now able to tailor grades of its Ducavin ABC materials to suit virtually any rigid or flexible PVC application requiring protection from bacterial attack. Andy Tombs and Stuart Hope will represent the company on both days at the show. The product lines are available in clear and opaque as standard, as well as colours. An additional benefit is the multitude of options for plasticiser choice in flexible PVC antimicrobial compounds. Materials can be produced with plasticisers that are non-DEHP, orthophthalate and phthalate-free, thus avoiding breech of the European Chemicals Agency as required under the REACH legislation. Whilst it is recognised that PVC products with antimicrobial protection offer considerable marketing potential in healthcare applications, Dugdale believes its extensive range of grades will enable manufacturers to increase market penetration and add value across many sectors including medical and healthcare. Micro-organisms that form naturally on plastics products can lead to product staining, offensive odours and in some cases loss of physical properties. Reducing these effects offers attractive benefits for many products, particularly consumer items such as footwear, flooring, clothing and waste containers. Equally appealing is the performance protection afforded as bacterial attack can lead to brittleness, shrinkage, loss of mechanical properties and integrity in some types of polymers. In addition to the above, the most emotive target applications are associated with risks related to crosscontamination through contact with multiple use items such as door handles, sanitary ware products and surfaces in public places. These risks can be minimised by using products incorporating antimicrobial additives. Although normal cleaning procedures cannot be replaced in such hygiene applications, these products offer an effective ‘second line of defence’. Dugdale also confirms that the active substances within this technology are supported for the inclusion on the BiocidalProducts Regulation. appealing in the market place, as well as leading to the creation of new applications for existing materials. Flexible and rigid compounds Anti-microbial rigid PVC compounds developed by Dugdale are independently tested and include standard and high impact, UV resistant, standard and easy flow injection moulding and general purpose and speciality extrusion grades. Flexible PVC compounds produced can be conventionally plasticised, DEHP-free, orthophthalate-free, phthalate-free and designed to impart additional anti-fungal properties. These materials can be offered in flame retardant, non-marring general purpose extrusion and moulding grades. Money for Med-Tech? – here’s how… Raising finance for Med-Tech is often the most important factor in product development – and often left until last. Dr Gugs Lushai of LifeSciences Healthcare once again talks to MTI Magazine about the issues at hand and the way forward
O
n the advent of the show we talk to Gugs about some of the global trends in healthcare, pharma and med-tech. The fact of the matter is that sources of med-tech funding are many and varied and require different understandings and different approaches. Here are the first eleven programmes that Gugs mentioned to us: Innovation Vouchers; KTPs; SMART; SBRI Healthcare; UKTI special focus - Export ; Apprenticeship; Industry Collaboration; Crowd funding; Loans for growth - Peer to peer lending; Capital Infrastructure funding – EIB; H2020, and many others. Med-tech funding is very much a ‘horses for courses’ Meantime Gugs notes that global trends and global financing cannot but be impactful everywhere. ‘Most analysts’, for example, ‘are talking about difficulties hitting us this year - so it’s a time for some battening down by Q4 2016. This may appear gloomy but it is more importantly viewed as a precautionary indication. The overall market shows some growth predicted for sales with some slowing down by 2019.’ Gugs adds that ‘the NHS spending review and cost cutting plans are the major influence on these trends in the UK. However, global trends are similar with pricing pressures in the US and unstable economic conditions in Brazil, Russia, and China also underpinning medium term trends. There are growth opportunities counterbalancing these trends including: the aging population, the rise of chronic diseases, and the advent of new and often expensive treatments (e.g. for cancer and evolving stem-cell treatments). Gugs notes that biotech drug sales posted an estimated $289 billion of sales in 2014 and are projected to grow to $445 billion by 2019. The majority top 10 pharma products by sales in 2014 are biotech drugs, including monoclonal antibodies and recombinant products (e.g. treatments for rheumatoid arthritis,

Hepatitis C, and cancer). Gugs points out that estimated global Med-Tech global revenues are now expected to increase from $369 billion to $454 billion in 2019, growing an average of 4.1 percent annually. In vitro diagnostics (IVD) is still medtech’s largest segment, generating $67.3 billion. As reported in a previous issue of this magazine, Gugs supports the idea of precision medicine as a healthcare model of the future (see graphic). ‘It holds out the promise of a more efficient and targeted intervention driven healthcare approach that should bolster some of the growth trends mentioned.’ Described as the new medical paradigm it includes: integration of more novel tests, imaging, better analytics incorporating multiple data sets and thereby enabling better understanding and implementation of therapies and solutions. njection moulding machinery supplier Wittmann Battenfeld will return to EXPO this year, offering a boosted range of medical injection moulding machines and ancillary equipment. Wittmann Battenfeld (WIBA) UK Managing Director Barry Hill says that the new equipment – first showcased at the Fakuma plastics exhibition, Germany in October 2015 – is ‘great news for injection moulders and for the med-tech sector generally. Our new med-tech machines are designed to be clean room ready from ‘out of the box’. As a first step it was decided to qualify a version of the all-electric EcoPower to clean room conditions. For this purpose, an ISO standard class 6 clean room from Max Petek Reinraumtechnik, Germany was installed at the Wittmann Battenfeld plant in Kottingbrunn, Austria and the new machine was developed there. The new med-tech moulding machines have been provided with a water cooling system with a closed cooling circuit, special alcohol- and solvent-resistant paint, nickel-coated clamping plates with covered threaded drillings and a laminar flow box, which supplies air with low particle content to the interior mould space. All openings in the mould area and the threading of the clamping plates are covered. The barrel insulation also minimizes emissions into the environment. reports a quantum increase in the company’s recent service and spares business. Within three years, Adrian’s team of five for the UK and Ireland has now grown to 12 engineers, including one apprentice. ‘Many moulders are increasingly bundling a number of non-urgent jobs together – and having them tackled via a monthly service contract. At the same time, our engineers are also able to offer some equipment training and support at these sessions – often to new personnel at customers. This scheduled monthly arrangement not only helps our clients avoid costly call out fees, it also helps us structure and plan our customer service.’ Meantime Connect 2 Cleanrooms (C2C) will be exhibiting its clean air solutions at Med-Tech Innovation EXPO 2016 (STAND: 64). The company is fresh from its success with Tex Plastics, having supplied the latter with an automated canopy system within its HEPA-lite™ range. Through an intuitive user-friendly touch screen interface, Tex Plastics is able to remotely activate actuators that slide sealed HEPA-lite™ canopies back to allow overhead crane access to tooling. This customer-driven requirement ensures that clean air is supplied at the critical point of production and reduces contamination by significantly limiting the areas of machinery that are exposed to the external environment during tooling changes. This feature also limits downtime for cleaning, reduces risk of contamination and increases productivity.

Turning the tables T
he use of radiotherapy has become established over the last 25 years as a major tool in the fight against cancer but it is acknowledged that its effectiveness is only as good as the tools used to deliver it. By far the most common is a couch on which the patient lies while the treatment is delivered from both above and below. The most important attribute of the couch top is its ability not to deflect or sag when mounted by the patient, ensuring the treatment is then delivered to precisely the intended location. For many years, the most common material for the couch top was timber, but it was becoming clear that even the hardest of woods was not able to offer the requisite strength, rigidity or consistency required. This meant the possibility that treatment may be inadvertently applied to the wrong areas, rendering it ineffective with considerable cost to the hospital. Varian Medical Systems, the world’s leading manufacturer of radiotherapy delivery systems, felt that a more advanced material was required, able to offer greater homogeneity with minimal but measurable deflection under pressure, while minimising weight as far as possible to enable advances in delivery capability The Varian team consulted the Composites and Defence Systems (CaDS) business of Morgan Advanced Materials (then NP Aerospace) who recommended the use of a carbon fibre base. Carbon fibre boasts a number of attributes making it ideal for this type of application. Morgan Advanced Materials is a global materials engineering company which designs and manufactures a wide range of high specification products across multiple sectors and geographies.The company has a global presence with over 10,000 employees across 50 countries. After the initial recommendation Morgan worked to develop a suitable solution and manufacturing process that met the exacting requirements of Varian. The company has invested in its research and development capability and cleanroom manufacturing facilities in 30 : March/April 2016
Coventry, UK, enabling it to offer the latest in material enhancements and manufacturing process innovation to Varian. They produced a moulded component with no inclusions, which offers optimised image quality. The two businesses have worked in partnership for more than 25 years, with Morgan supplying more than 11,500 carbon fibre couch tops to Varian during this time, making it one of the company’s longeststanding and most loyal customers. This longterm relationship was recognised in 2012 when Morgan was named as Varian’s UK Supplier of the Year, from more than 100 suppliers. The partnership has been instrumental in optimising productivity and performance in hospitals worldwide. Vital to its success has been Morgan’s quality, delivery and responsiveness, with the design of the couch tops evolving to meet the needs of ever-changing treatment methods. Extensive process development and testing has resulted in a high level of homogeneity, resulting in consistent, repeatable performance across components and batches. The couches are also highly radiotranslucent (x-ray transparent), meaning they only absorb a minimal amount of the radio waves, so that the highest quantity of radiation reaches the patient. Perhaps most important, though, is the strength and rigidity of the end product, meaning that it will deflect by no more than 4 or 5mm even when holding a very heavy patient. The current optimised structural design features a precise fibre orientation in lay-up, with highly accurate moulded geometry requiring minimal machining, reducing part costs for Varian. This success has led to the carbon fibre base becoming the material of choice for all of Varian’s linear accelerator treatment equipment in addition to the original application of imaging on radiotherapy simulators which help to assess the position of the tumour and the best means of treatment delivery. CFT wins more SBRI Finance Capillary Film Technology Limited (CFT), a UK based technology and product development company for life sciences and clinical diagnostics has received £1 million in funding through a Phase 2 Small Business Research Initiative for Healthcare (SBRI Healthcare) development contract.

FT will use the funding to work with partners to develop a prototype of its cost-effective and fully quantitative multiplexed point-ofcare (POC) microfluidic testing technology to diagnose acute coronary syndrome. The prototype will then be clinically validated in hospitals around the UK in preparation for regulatory approval. The phase 2 funding follows on from a successful £98K phase 1 SBRI Healthcare feasibility contract, which was awarded to CFT in April 2015 to demonstrate the feasibility of CFT’s micro capillary film in a POC setting in measuring heart attack biomarkers. The CFT technology is based upon a low-cost microfluidic fluoropolymer film with unique optical transparency that delivers extremely sensitive measurements within 10 or more microcapillaries. This allows fully quantitative immunoassays against multiple biomarkers to be performed from a single sample. Panels of existing or emerging diagnostic biomarkers can therefore be measured using MCF technology at the point of care with performance matching that of laboratory assays. MCF technology provides a cost effective and both highly sensitive and fully quantitative option for diagnosing acute coronary syndrome (heart attack), resulting in reduced waiting times and improved treatment for patients. Commenting on the funding, Dr Lee Smith, CEO at CFT, said: “In the UK and US, coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death. CFT was selected by SBRI to develop a test for use in NHS accident and emergency departments to diagnose myocardial infarction. Our

Lucideon investigates implants and longevity Lucideon has completed and published its white paper on the tribology and testing of orthopaedic implants.
A
uthored by Aia Malik and Dr Chris Pickles at Lucideon the paper references the continual state of development of the orthopaedic implant industry’ which is currently ‘witnessing an explosion of novel materials, designs, and applications.’ The authors note that ‘the biocompatibility of an orthopaedic implant is essential but, as an increased number of patients outlive the life expectancy of their implant, longevity is becoming a significant clinical problem. Thus, the bio-tribological performance of an implant becomes increasingly relevant. Bio-tribology as defined by Malik and Pickles is ‘the study of friction, lubrication and wear as they occur in the human body and, as such, are all important factors to consider in the design of implants. Assessment of an implant covers three areas - mechanical testing, debris analysis and surface analysis.’ The Lucideon white paper accordingly reviews the primary key techniques available, focusing on the value of generating a complete picture and an understanding of an orthopaedic implant in terms of how the design, base material or coating behaves under friction and loading. The white paper covers matters such as testing, simulation, surface analysis, debris analysis and AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) which produces topographical images of surface features too small to be seen in conventional optical microscopes Some of the conclusions in the paper assert that ‘designers must use better material coupled with higher impact, wear and corrosion resistance in order to achieve better prognoses for implant patients.’ Malik and Pickles also say that ‘pre-clinical mechanical testing is essential for evaluation of new implant products, their validation against old designs, and in the support of regulatory approval. An understanding of how an implant’s material and design will perform is crucial. However, to generate valid results, mechanical simulators must be accurately representative of joint movements in the body – the current methods go some way to achieving this but more robust and representative methods must be developed to improve this.’ The white paper also draws attention to improvements in surface analysis measurement. ‘The advanced capabilities of surface analysis can provide invaluable information on what is really happening at the interface www.med-techinnovation.com

Making it scalable Leading med-tech manufacturer Phillips-Medisize continues to weigh up considerations of design and manufacture when considering new med-tech projects. ‘A brilliant medical device idea, but is it technically feasible and scalable?’ Phillips-Medisize regularly addresses these questions when developers and customers discuss their first medical device design with the renowned outsourcing partner. The company currently has annual global sales of over $600 million with 80% of the total revenue coming from drug delivery, medical device, primary pharmaceutical packaging and diagnostic products such as: disposable insulin pens, glucose meters, specialty inhalation drug delivery devices, single use surgical devices and consumable diagnostic components. At the outset of a project the product feasibility often presupposes HCD (human centered design), DFM (design for manufacturing) and DFA (design for assembly) based on engineered-in scalability. Positive results ensure that production performance – derived from the feasibility condition of the first 3D-printed build or pilot batch – can be raised proportionally and/or linearly in a defined scale. At the beginning of the project – according to Phillips-Medisize – the customer and its outsourcing partner should consider whether commercial production volumes will achieve target cost when considering DFM and DFA analyses. The feasibility study leads the R&D

experts from the first reproduced pilot components to the preproduction series and finally to the scalability into millions of units of this medical device. The company estimates that some 80% of a product’s cost is determined during the first 20% of its development timeline. Scalability means that the production scale can be raised and/or varied from a basic low volume to the desired volume or magnitude. In the case of a specialised, niche drug-delivery device, for example, this may mean progressing from low-volume 3D-printed components assembled by skilled technicians to a ‘manumation’ (combination of manual assembly and automation) assembly process conducted by a trained operator.
More from polymermedics St Austell-based injection moulding company polymermedics has upgraded its metrology lab, delivering even more stringent quality controls for its plastic component parts. Additional atmospheric controls will enable the company to carefully regulate the temperature and humidity in the lab, as the quality team carry out micronlevel measurements using optical and probe sensing techniques. The investment move was prompted by an order from a world-class medical manufacturer, specifying precisely-fitting component parts to create a new device — and special fixtures were created by Verus UK to allow both sides of some parts to be scanned without removing them from the machine. The new measurement precision will prove especially valuable as the company monitors the quality of its micromoulded parts. Quality manager Derren Blewett says that ‘lives often depend on the medical and pharmaceutical parts we make, and we’ve worked hard to build a reputation for getting every product exactly on specification. We know there’s no room for error if these components are going to work, so we’ve decided to take our metrology to the next level.’ 36 : March/April 2016
Blewett adds that ‘it means that we can also submit our other products to the same high levels of scrutiny, get reliable, consistent moulding data and ensure our quality is always exactly where we want it to be — and that’s especially important with our growing micromoulding order book.’ The company also recently swept the board at this year’s Cornwall Manufacturing Awards. Nominated in three categories, the St Austellbased firm claimed the Community Engagement and Environmental Project of the Year titles, while Lauren Tregilgas was jointly crowned Trainee of the Year. Operations director David Yallop said; ‘I am really happy for everyone here; it’s great that all our hard work has been noticed. I had a feeling we might sneak one of the awards but I certainly didn’t expect all three, so that was a brilliant surprise.’ www.med-techinnovation.com

Gluing the surgical light together Medilink UK 2014 award winner Brandon Medical found a willing partner in Kidlington-based Intertronics when tackling some recent issues of product development. In any job of work it is a commonplace that extended curing times for adhesives can often create a production bottleneck. This was exactly the problem experienced by Brandon Medical Ltd. Technical Director Nigel Davill explained that ‘we had a problem bonding three polycarbonate lenses together in order to make the large front lens of our Quasar® eLite operating theatre lamp. The two-part epoxy we were using had an extended fixture time, so we were looking for an adhesive that allowed us to handle and position the parts easily with an unlimited open time, and then to cure quickly using UV light.’ Nigel adds that ‘the problem with this approach was that, although the parts to be bonded are visually clear, the material has UV absorbing properties - so getting the right amount of light curing energy to the joint appeared to be tricky. Fortunately, Matt Baseley and his colleagues at Intertronics came up with a simple solution that very successfully resolved things and saved us a considerable amount of time in the production process.’
Matt Baseley says that ‘our Dymax 3225-T-SC is highly suited to this application. It is a single part UV/visible light-curing adhesive which bonds to polycarbonate and many other plastics. It is readily dispensed, in this case using a benchtop robot, and typically cures in a few seconds. It has a colour change feature – this Dymax SeeCure® product goes from blue to clear when fully cured - so that dispensing and cure can be checked visually. Materials innovation for syringes ELASTO Sweden, part of the HEXPOL TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) group has expanded its range of Mediprene TPE compounds for plunger seals in single-use syringes. The new grades were among the materials showcased by the company at the 2015 Fakuma plastics exhibition, which took place in Southern Germany, October 13-17, 2015. Niklas Ottosson, medical technical manager for ELASTO says that ‘over recent years there has been a rise in demand for singleuse syringes and a clear move from rubber to TPE for plunger seals. To support this growing market, we have expanded our range of Mediprene TPEs specifically designed for syringe plunger seal applications’. Mediprene grades are sterilizable with gamma, EtO and steam and representative grades have passed cytotoxicity tests according to ISO 10993-5 and biocompatibility tests according to USP Class VI. The Mediprene grades are available in a range of hardnesses from 43 to 73 Shore A. The TPE seal, which is mounted on the end of the plunger, needs to provide a leakproof seal with the syringe barrel. The Mediprene TPEs also offer low compression set, helping to maintain seal integrity. ELASTO offer these grades as translucent or coloured compounds, made from medical grade raw materials. The colour masterbatch supplier has been selected with care, ensuring that not only the pigments and carriers are compliant but also that the masterbatches are manufactured under rigorous controls with regard to traceability, consistency and change control, thereby fitting the Mediprene concept at ELASTO’s ISO 13485 accredited facilities. Alongside material advantages, because of the cost and speed at which they can be manufactured, ELASTO notes that Mediprene TPEs are being specified as an alternative to thermoset rubber. They require no vulcanisation and are 100% recyclable. Consistent shrinkage also allows for tight dimensional tolerances with fewer process steps and without the need for additional operations such as trimming. echnology and design consultancy Cambridge Design Partnership (CDP) launched the world's first wearable device designed to measure and monitor the vital signs of multiple trauma patients for emergency response in disasters and battlefield situations. The First Response Monitor is designed to help medics monitor both heart rate and respiratory rate. Respiratory rate is often neglected by automated monitoring systems and has been described as the ‘forgotten bio-sign’, as many existing wearable monitors focus on heart rate alone. Those that do measure respiratory rate have often been found to have low accuracy or are difficult to use in an emergency situation. However, the benefits of accurately monitoring respiratory rate are clear, and when combined with other parameters – such as heart rate and body temperature – can indicate life-threatening conditions such as sepsis. When designing the new compact device, Cambridge Design Partnership interviewed a range of army medics about their needs and about the challenges in multiple casualty emergency situations. A clear and unmet need was identified for a low-cost device to bridge the gap between manual methods of vital signs measurement – which can be laborious and challenging amidst the noise and stress of a disaster or on the front line – and more expensive patient monitoring systems. The lightweight, robust and low-cost wearable biometric device not only monitors patients but collects and transmits data in real-time, enabling the medic to care for a greater number of casualties, providing more effective casualty triage to deliver improved patient outcomes.
The small device clips onto a patient’s nose and monitors breathing rate and heart rate, giving ‘at a glance’ indication of both parameters. This data is added to a trends graph showing how these measurements have changed over time. This not only enables the medic to focus efforts on providing care rather than taking measurements but also enables the care-giver to understand how the patient’s condition has changed over time. The data can then be transmitted using Bluetooth low energy to a smartphone app or tablet, enabling other data analyses such as multiple patient triage or situational awareness across the group. Although the device has been primarily designed with first response medics in mass casualty incidents in mind, it has applications in many other fields – such as civilian medicine where additional monitoring of conditions has demonstrable benefit in patient outcomes, wellness monitoring and within sports for training and performance monitoring. The technology can also be developed to provide a low-cost solution for low resource healthcare settings. Speaking about the new development James Baker, Partner, Cambridge Design Partnership says that ‘with the First Response Monitor we’ve combined our expertise in wearable connected devices together with our extensive medical experience. The result is a technology for effective measurement of breathing and heart rate. Graham Engineering and Conair target tubing As part of ongoing collaboration in extrusion process development, Graham Engineering Corporation and The Conair Group have agreed on an exchange of equipment that will be used in each company’s extrusion laboratory for development and innovation of technology for medical tubing. Graham will provide a 1-inch American Kuhne ULTRA CR extruder with AKcess touchscreen to Conair’s laboratory in Pinconning, MI. Conair will supply its latest MedVac™ vacuum sizing/cooling tank, a MedLine® puller-cutter, and a MedLine take-away conveyor to be installed in the new, dedicated medical laboratory in Graham’s 150,000 square foot (14,000 sq.m) headquarters and factory in York, PA. ‘Conair and American Kuhne have a long history of partnering on extrusion applications, not only on equipment, but also on expertise in process optimization, which is vital to the development and testing work taking place in our new medical laboratory in York,’ says Steve Maxson, Graham’s Director of Global Business Development – Medical. ‘Conair has been on the forefront of efforts to solve complex medical extrusion challenges such as non-contact and contact vacuum-sizing techniques for small bore medical tubing and cutter blade and bushing designs to effectively cut low durometer, difficult-to-feed small bore tubing.’ Maxson said the new medical laboratory will tackle

In Conair’s Michigan processdevelopment center, the new American Kuhne extruder will expand the complement of production-scale extrusion equipment installed, said Bob Bessemer, Sales Manager, Medical Downstream Extrusion. ‘This new extruder will expand our capabilities. It is specially equipped to allow us to process FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene), which is increasingly being used in tubing for critical medical applications.’ The extruder can also handle high-temperature materials like PEEK (polyether ether ketone) and other medical grade thermoplastics including polyamides and polyurethane. The Graham Group acquired majority interest in American Kuhne in 2012, followed by Graham Engineering Corporation’s acquisition of Welex in June 2013. Together, Graham Engineering, American Kuhne, and Welex create a convergence of leading technologies, people, and capabilities in extrusion.

Manufacturing products for health-care applications entails very stringent requirements on the acquisition, compliance with and documentation of process data. While liquid silicone rubber (LSR) injection molding (LIM) is well established in this field, the metering of additives and colorants has in the past been something of a ‘black art’. With the launch of a high-precision, automatically controlled multicomponent dosing system, Elmet now offers processors a scientific solution. The key element is a highresolution flow meter. Integrated as a closed-loop control instrument into the colorant and additive feeding system, it determines the dispensed volume with a resolution of 640,000 increments per liter. On the basis of these precise measurements, the
system accurately controls the supply of colorants and additives. At the same time, the corresponding values are made available for documentation. Elmet believes that processors of colorless functional additives, including certain active ingredients, will in particular benefit from such precision-controlled metering. Optically imperceptible and hence, potentially undetected deviations from the setpoint, e.g. due to wear, clogging strainers or changing properties (viscosity) of the additive charge, may cause significant extra costs. The Elmet system, based on exact volume measurement, ensures that the necessary metering accuracy is maintained throughout by continually readjusting the feed rate to the originally acquired and stored reference value. The new flow meter is part of ELMET’s TOP 3000 S multicomponent dosing system for LSR injection molding applications, which has energy-efficient pneumatic drives and supports the use of both 20-liter and 200-liter drums. www.med-techinnovation.com

Holoxica set to boost 3D medical imaging New 3D technology is set to pave the way for significant changes in clinical CT, ultrasound and MRI scanning
H
oloxica, the specialist holographic 3D visualisation company, has secured €1.28million ($1.43m) from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 SME Instrument in order to assist the development of pioneering medical imaging technology, using motion holographic video displays. The new technology will offer faster interpretation of 3D scan images, which will then enable better quality surgical procedures. A new medical market Holoxica will use the funding to build a prototype holographic video display for use in CT, MRI and Ultrasound volumetric scanning. Dr Javid Khan, founder and CEO of Holoxica says that the potential for this ground-breaking disruptive technology will be keenly anticipated by clinicians and surgeons and will tap into a market for medical imaging 3D display which is set to be worth an estimated $4.3bn by 2020. ‘We see holographic video displays completely transforming the field of medical imaging,’ says Khan. ‘In recent years, there have certainly been improvements in the clarity and detail of datasets produced by Ultrasound, CT, PET and MRI scanners, but whilst these machines generate 3D volumetric imagery as a series of 2D ‘slices’ scanned through the body using radiation, we can present the scans as wholly 3D images via holographic volume displays. The Holoxica display essentially performs the inverse operation and converts radiation into a photonic representation, showing the 2D ‘slices’ as a series of ‘light sheets’ suspended in free space.’ The Holoxica display is being designed to depict volumetric slices from a DICOM image stack, which will be accessed from a PACS database. The DICOM images can originate from any source, including CT, MRI, PET or Ultrasound. The display will initially work with Siemens scanners based at St Thomas’ Hospital / Kings College London. ‘The concept behind the innovation’, says Khan, ‘is simple: ‘3D images should be viewed in 3D easily and comfortably. Holographic technology offers a solution to this problem.’ When built, the holographic video display will be tested in three pilot scenarios for medical teacher/ training; diagnostics, review and monitoring of conditions and also for live surgery. Holoxica’s R & D has revealed that holographic video display technology is capable of producing excellent results with large, bright images effectively ‘floating’ in mid-air without the need for cumbersome 3D glasses. The breakthrough innovation will meet an urgent demand from medical professionals for a 3D visualisation solution that can match the performance of scanning devices. Horizon2020 funds researchers and innovators at the cutting edge of their research disciplines, working on the latest breakthroughs in technology. It supports projects across the cycle from research to innovation, using a range of financial instruments to facilitate their exploitation and access to markets.
