While planning for their wedding day, brides spend countless
hours preparing guest lists, seeking out and securing the perfect venue and may spend an entire day getting lost in the magic of finding their perfect dress in a store. Just as important as the elegant frame-fitting fabric of their wedding dress is the way their hair will be presented to guests on their big day. day are salons of the High Country. Mark of Eden in Ashe County, Shear Shakti in Watauga County and Battle Born Beauty salon and boutique in Avery County all have unique and hands-on approaches to ensure that brides are radiant and confident as they say “I do.” Mark of Eden, Jefferson, NC: Mark of Eden is a full-service hair salon located in Ashe County that offers cuts, colors, perms and more. The salon was named a finalist at the North Caro-
lina Wedding Awards 2020 for Hair and Makeup Salon of the Year in Northwest North Carolina. Owner and stylist Tera Blevins shared that Mark of Eden has a wedding contract with Twickenham House and Hall, which is a popular wedding venue in Ashe County. This is an open contract, which means that both Twickenham House and Hall and Mark of Eden can make any changes when planning for an event. Stylists will travel, depending on the size of the wedding. ding and will take several staff members to do hair and makeup, the staff will ask for them to come to the salon. Usually there is not much room at venues for multiple stylists and people to get ready at once, Tera says. When they do host large bridal parties at the salon, she says they go the extra mile to ensure that those in attendance feel special. Typically they will serve a brunch, including strawberries and sparkling wine, along with printed signs placed around the salon to welcome and celebrate the wedding party. Mark of Eden does complete a practice hair and makeup look for brides and their bridal parties. They can work with any hair type or cuts, including dreadlocks, Tera says. Mark of Eden follows a schedule while doing hair and makeup, typically smaller children, in-laws who are helping to set up and the bride go as close to last as possible. Having an itinerary and the order in which people will be getting ready helps both the stylist and the wedding party stay on schedule for the big day, Tera adds. In the past, Mark of Eden stylists have traveled to Myrtle Beach and Charleston, S.C. for destination weddings. Tera says they do charge a traveling fee since they will be out of the salon and are having to bring their equipment. If they travel to a venue that is located in Ashe County or its outskirts with a party of more than six getting their hair done, they will not charge a traveling fee. Staff are prepared
Shear Shakti, Boone, NC: Shear Shakti is a hair shop and massage studio that opened in December 2009 and is located in the heart of downtown Boone. Owner/hairdresser Charlotte Baxter and Manager/Wedding Coordinator Jamie Church shared some information about the business’ role in producing spectacular looks for brides on their special day. At the salon, Jamie and Charlotte focus more on the task of wedding hair while another team of stylists specializes in makeup and the remaining stylists focus on a little bit of both. Jamie serves as the main point of contact for weddings, which the shop discovered was the best way to tackle the large volume of weddings they service. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Shear Shakti was averaging about 50 weddings per year. The stark majority of the weddings they serviced were destination brides from other areas of the United States. At Shear Shakti, stylists have found that the more rules that are set and followed, the easier the process is for their staff and brides. The brides appreciate the strong contract the salon has fully with them, which allows both parties to form a relationship. Shear Shakti staff require a practice of the hairstyle a bride chooses for their wedding day Photo courtesy Sheer Shakti prior to the big day. Shear Shakti stylists do travel to wedding venues and will charge a travel fee. While they do encourage people to come to the salon, they mainly travel
to complete hair and makeup looks for weddings. If the wedding will be held in a location where stylists will need to stay overnight, Shear Shakti staff will ask that any hotel rooms or other fees be covered for them. Hair extensions are also available at the shop, which provides three different types of extensions to choose from. If a bride or other member of the wedding party brings their own extensions, stylists will install them for a fee. More information about Shear Shakti and its services can be found by visiting the website at www.shearshakti.com or Facebook and Instagram pages @Shear Shakti. Battle Born Beauty salon and boutique, Banner Elk, NC: Battle Born Beauty salon and boutique is located in Avery County and is ideal for those interested in hair extensions and bridal hair services. Owner/hairstylist, Alexandria “Allie” Oliver shared some of her expertise and the services offered by Battle Born Beauty. She says she found her passion in bridal hairstyling long before she even started beauty school. Hairstyling has always been a creative outlet for her and she says she loves being able to share her love for hair on such a special day. For Battle Born Beauty, services are listed individually and package pricing is offered for larger parties. The salon offers on-site services with a small travel fee, in which all tools and products are transported that are necessary for the convenience of the bride and bridal party. The staff loves hosting smaller groups at the salon if that is more helpful for their Continued on next page All About Weddings 2022 | 11

timeline. Pricing and other terms as well as establishing a timeline are discussed during a consultation prior to any commitment or booking. Allie says scheduling a hairstyling trial allows for an opportunity for stylists to connect with the bride and confirm details. A hairstyling trial opens lines of communication for inspiration including hair accessories, determining if the hair will complement the wedding dress, deciding whether to use or forgo hair extensions, and confirming the number of services and location. At Battle Born Beauty, Allie says she likes to utilize a trial session as a follow-up consultation while the stylist and bride “try on” different looks. Trends and Tips From Our Experts As far as current trends, Tera says Mark of Eden creates a lot of styles that incorporate braids. She says braids are a good choice for weddings as they tend to hold well. Other popular trends, which help add more volume and body to the hair, are both tied and clipped in extensions and halos, Tera adds. Tera also will take into account the position of the bride and groom during traditional wedding ceremonies. Traditionally, the bride stands on the left and the groom stands on the right. Therefore, she advises brides wear a style where the focal point will be on the right side of their face so it will be more visible during
the ceremony. Typically, stylists at Mark of Eden will exchange phone numbers with the bride and communicate via text. Brides will often share pictures of their dress and hairstyle ideas with the stylist who will also share recommendations with them. For example, if the back of the dress is a focal point it would be optimal to go with an up-do to show off the details of the dress. Charlotte and Jamie said that if Shear Shakti stylists feel that it is important to the bride, they will ask to see the dress beforehand and make an effort to match the hair to the dress. According to Charlotte and Jamie, hair trends vary by the year. The two from Shear Shakti said that the majority of brides turn to popular vision discovery engine Pinterest to find the style they want and share it with a stylist. aawmag.com
In 2021, Shear Shatki styled a lot of low buns for weddings, but did not see a single, defined trend. Both Charlotte and Jamie agree that wedding hairstyles are more of an individual choice based on what the brides and their wedding party prefer and are comfortable with. They see a fair amount of people who want to leave their hair down or half up/half down and about the same amount who opt to wear their hair completely up. One tip Charlotte and Jamie provided is to remember that when it comes to up-dos, sometimes less is more. It is not uncommon that brides may feel like they do not have enough hair to achieve their dream wedding hairstyle. However, many times it is the opposite and if soon-to-be brides have been growing their hair out for months or years, sometimes it is in their best interest to shed a few inches before it is styled for the wedding. Another observation Charlotte and Jamie made when it comes to bridal hair is that styles are less sleek and uniform in comparison to the foolproof styles that reigned in previous decades. Today, brides tend to lean more toward a whimsical, tousled and natural look rather than a structured look. Donning a style that is more free-flowing also works well for outdoor weddings when wind and other elements may be present. Allie at Battle Born Beauty also likes to take the weather into account when helping bridal parties decide hairstyles. “In our area, weather can be unpredictable. It is important to me to ask my brides whether or not they will tolerate their hair flying around their face, neck and shoulders if left all the way down,” Allie says. “In other circumstances, brides feel more comfortable and confident with their hair pulled all the way back. I have noticed that hair that is pulled all the way back, or even in a complete up-do with small pieces framing the face, really showcases the dress because it
takes away the distraction of free-flowing hair.” Allie adds that exposing the neck and shoulders, especially if the dress has a great amount of detail or sleeves, can be more comfortable since the hair will not get stuck on the embellishments. At Battle Born Beauty, Allie says her staff often incorporate delicate hair accessories, florals or heirlooms to make the hairstyle speak true to brides. The hair trends that Allie sees and hears being requested the most include a low, textured bun and/or loosely held half up, half down styles with a braid. Additionally, a couple of styles that she has seen grow in popularity over the last year are textured ponytails — high and low — and sleek and swept back face-framing hairstyles so the hair is placed towards the back. She loves doing styles similar to those because they look so classic. “Regardless of what the hairstyle inspiration is, the real trend is how it is executed,” Allie says. “In my experience, brides and bridesmaids often request a more natural and loose, boho and deconstructive approach to their hairstyle. What is really fun about this is that it allows me to have more creativity when combining the style inspiration to their hair.” As a hair extension specialist, Allie can guide brides through the process of
selecting hair extensions that would be suitable for them. If the bride is not committed to the process of maintaining hair extension methods that would require salon visits, then clip-in hair extensions are a great choice. It also depends on their willingness of investing in the hair itself. Hand-tied hair extension methods usually come at a higher cost; however, they are attached for up to eight weeks so the bride does not need to worry about taking them in and out daily, which is great for those who want to keep the bridal look throughout the honeymoon. These are also custom colored based on the bride’s actual hair, and are usually much more comfortable. Whether up, down, elaborate or more simple, the stylists from all three salons agreed that the hairstyle chosen is dependent on the bride and what is most important and comfortable for them. They all commented that making the bride feel their best on their big day is the ultimate goal.

Raise Your Glass Is An Open, Cash or No Bar Right For Your Wedding?
Endless opportunities exist for how to handle alcohol at a wedding. Figuring out bar options for a wedding reception can be overwhelming, but when handled well, an evening of fun awaits. Alcohol options at a wedding can range from serving just beer and wine to an open bar with full liquor options to even a dry reception. When coaching couples through the decision-making process, Megan Drake, local wedding planner and owner of The Elegant Event, helps brides and grooms think through issues such as the alcohol options provided by their venue, whether they can supply their own alcohol, what the costs for alcohol may be and other related topics.
Spice It Up For those with the budget to add some fun to their bar option, Megan said fancy mobile bars are an exciting way to spice 14 | All About Weddings 2022
up the alcohol experience for guests. These bars come in a variety of shapes and sizes. One mobile bar in particular that she enjoyed was a vintage truck that served drinks out of kegs in the back of the truck. However, the kegs were hidden under barn wood boxes to add to the aesthetic of the bar. Megan added that her favorite mobile bar from 2021 was a beautifully converted horse trailer. With most creative mobile bar options associated with companies outside the High Country, be sure to do research as early as possible. Though these bars come with increased prices, they can greatly add to the experience of guests. Signature cocktails are all the rage these days at weddings. With couples creating favorite or memorable drinks with a spin for their friends and family to enjoy, they’re able to share a part of their story with those in attendance.
Megan said she’s recently seen many couples choose to name their cocktails after their pets or mimic a drink from a local restaurant. “Whether it’s a favorite, whether it’s kind of thinking outside the box as far as what you would typically drink, or just trying to suit the particular season that you’re in — those are all fun ways of creating signature drinks,” Megan says. Frank Williams, food and beverage manager at Morchella Provisions — which provides the alcohol options at Twickenham House — helps couples think through signature cocktail choices if they are stuck deciding what to serve. An important tip to keep in mind when dreaming up a signature cocktail is to think about how easy it will be for the bartender to create the drink quickly. Though Frank said he is able to create a fancy, complicated mixed drink as a signature cocktail, the guests’ experience at the reception can be hampered by how aawmag.com

that’s one thing,” Megan says. “When they show up and see cash bar, that can be a huge let down; it puts a poor taste in their mouth for the wedding.” But if a cash bar is the best option for a couple, Megan recommends giving guests plenty of notice of this ahead of time. In addition, she firmly encourages couples to stay away from having an open bar during a cocktail hour and then switching to a cash bar during the reception. This confuses guests and can make their experience subpar. “I tell people if you’re going to do that, then let’s just go with a beer and wine
option all night and avoid the expensive liquor because if you’re that concerned about budget, let’s have alcohol available all night, but we’re avoiding really expensive liquor drinks,” Megan says. With many couples worried about over serving or their guests becoming unruly when alcohol is free and flowing, Frank encourages couples to only have an open bar for four hours maximum. Sometimes couples ask for a six-hour open bar, and with his wisdom Frank is able to explain the downsides of this request. Continued on next page
long they would wait in line at the bar. Also, in keeping with the times, Frank said Morchella Provisions offers hard seltzers and local craft beers as an appealing option for couples wanting to cater to a variety of guests.
What About A Cash Bar? When advising couples, Megan encourages them to steer away from offering a cash bar if possible. “I am not a fan of a cash bar and here’s why — most of the time, guests come to a wedding and they have certain expectations. If you let them know ahead of time, we’re going to have a cash bar available and they can go ahead and process, ‘I’m going to have to pay for my alcohol,’ then

Dry Doesn’t Mean Boring WeddingWire (weddingwire.com) states that there are several reasons why couples may choose not to have alcohol at their wedding reception such as religious reasons, cutting down budget costs or for personal reasons. While their occurrence may be infrequent, it’s easy to use creativity to make a dry wedding reception a fun time for all in attendance. Though 2022 is Megan’s 10th wedding season in the High Country, she can only recall one or two weddings where couples chose not to serve any alcohol. One stood out in her mind as memorable; a particular couple had a local coffee company set up a coffee bar with blended coffees and iced coffees instead of mixed drinks. “You don’t have to have alcohol to have a great wedding,” Megan says. “They had a wonderful reception and it was very much a party and people had a great time 16 | All About Weddings 2022
— they were hyped up on caffeine instead of alcohol.” WeddingWire suggests that couples could host their wedding earlier in the day with a brunch or lunchtime affair. To keep the wedding interesting, WeddingWire also states that couples could be creative with their non-alcoholic beverage selection and offer additional activities at the reception such as a photo booth, board/yard games or karaoke.
Tips for Success The placement of the physical bar is another thing to customize if the wedding venue allows for it. Chassie Stone, wedding sales manager at Chetola Resort at Blowing Rock, said couples she works with are able to use an app on their smartphone to create a custom reception layout and place the bar wherever they would like that is feasible. Another matter for couples to consider is the type of liquor to serve and the
quality of it. Megan said if cost is an issue, but a family member needs to have a top-shelf option for a particular type of liquor, it’s OK to ask the bartenders to only use that higher quality liquor for the designated person, thus keeping cost down overall. All in all, it’s important to remember, there’s no shame in asking the experts for help. It’s their job, and they’re more than happy to provide answers to questions. “From the couples’ side of it, (make) sure you ask a lot of questions if anything comes up,” Frank says. “Ask the question — the worst thing you could get is a no answer, but if you don’t know, it’s better off to ask than worry about it.”

DE-STRESS
During the Wedding Planning Process with The Care Collective Planning a wedding can make even the most calm, cool and collected bride turn into a ball of stress. According to wedding planning website The Knot (theknot.com), data indicates at least 2.6 million couples will throw weddings in 2022. Some of these were events that were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s no wonder that 2022 brides are feeling the heat. Megan Ward, the founder and owner of The Care Collective in Boone, NC, said that prioritizing self-care is crucial to maintain your wellbeing, especially during the stressful season of wedding planning. “It’s important to realize that only we can truly prioritize our own needs. When we take time to seek self care everyone in our lives benefits, not just ourselves,” Megan says. “Our mood shifts, we are able to handle unexpected stressors, and go through our days knowing we have scheduled, routine self care built into our lives.” The Care Collective was originally founded by Megan in 2010 as Everybody Massage and Bodywork. It opened in its current form in 2015, and now provides a variety of relaxation and wellness services, including massage therapy and sauna experiences. “The Care Collective is about self care and wellness,” Megan says. “We are more focused on listening, being receptive and making sure any pain issues you have are being focused on.” A massage is one way to de-stress and pamper yourself at The Care Collective. According to The Mayo Clinic, massages are proven to reduce stress and increase relaxation, making them a must for brides-to-be looking for some time focusing on themselves. Massages are also known to help lower the heart rate and reduce blood pressure, a helpful tool on 18 | November-December 2021

those days when wedding planning stress is in overdrive. Massage packages range from 30-minute focused sessions to 120-minute full-body massage experiences, and The Care Collective’s team of 11 licensed massage and bodywork therapists will personalize your experience to your needs. “Each of (our massage therapists) offer(s) a different experience, all focused on creating a massage experience specific to each issue presented by the client,” Megan says. The Care Collective also offers sauna experiences and herbal foot soaks to help brides-to-be unwind. Traditional and infrared sauna packages can help relax muscles and the mind. Red light therapy and salt add-ons can enhance a sauna experience and melt away the stress. If you want to spend meaningful time with your partner during the wedding planning process, Megan says that The Care Collective offers everything you need for a relaxing date. “All of our services can be done individually or as a couple,” Megan says. “The sauna is an amazing place to process your experience, talk or just simply relax. The couples foot soak and couples massage
is a fun way to have a shared experience, while being together in a deeply relaxing experience.” The Care Collective also has fun opportunities for brides-to-be to spend time with their loved ones amidst the wedding planning stress. “We have a yoga and sauna special on Sunday mornings which has been great for brides and their bridal parties,” Megan says. “Our traditional sauna can easily accommodate groups of 16. We have created a space that can be enjoyed alone, with a loved one or with a group.” Clients can continue group relaxation time in The Care Collective’s dedicated relaxation and solitude space. Here, clients can grab a specialty wellness beverage, like a hot oat milk lavender latte or a cold hemp-derived CBD beverage. Each drink has a wellness benefit — some help aid relaxation, others support immune function and some best energy. The wellness area and relaxation lounge are designed to help you forget all of your upcoming wedding to-dos and just breathe. Planning a wedding is one of the most joyful and stressful times in life. Megan wants to remind brides-to-be that they deserve some extra pampering during the process. “Seeking self care is transformative,” Megan says. “It is a basic need that should be honored and respected. The Care Collective is a space that is here to celebrate you and allow you time to truly take care of yourself.” The Care Collective is open seven days per week. Florists
of The High Country Flowers For Your Wedding Budget and Size Florists in the counties of Ashe, Avery and Watauga are prepared to deliver on whatever your wedding plans include. From a boutonniere and small bouquet for a quick trip to a local Justice of the Peace, to an elopement, or for a destination wedding for hundreds, there is a florist to make your dreams come true across the High Country. In West Jefferson, Four Gals and a Florist have seen it all, says Owner Nancy Reeves. Walk-in requests for flowers to accompany a trip to the Justice of the Peace can be handled for around $25. But they also have filled orders up to $8,000, once planning for a wedding request for 1,500 tulips, delivered straight from Holland. With a request like that, wedding plans need to begin up to two years in advance. The Village Florist in Jefferson is a full-time florist shop that also handles weddings of all sizes, from a few wearables for a smaller event up to an expenditure close to $7,000. Owner Julie Wyatt says they can cover it

all: wearables, arbors, patios and table pieces for both the rehearsal dinner and the reception. Bouquet Florist in Boone features a full-time wedding specialist, Aeriell Youngbar, who has been with them about 10 months. All bridal requests are handled, from a simple bride’s bouquet and a boutonniere to expenditures of thousands of dollars. A popular request has been their elopement package, which involves preparing for a small wedding party with no more than 20 guests. Although the larger wedding party might take one to two years of planning, elopements are handled within a two to three week window. Mountain Visions Florist in Newland can be found on Sugar Mountain No. 1 Road, and boasts their own mountain view. They average about 16 weddings per year, along with about 10 elopements. Owner Lori Benfield says that “people come here because they just want to be married in the mountains.” At the high end of the spectrum, Millefleuers of Banner Elk is the place to go for a destination wedding. They plan
the floral arrangements for the entire venue, including the rehearsal, aisle decorations, reception table arrangements and creating the mood in a location. Prices have ranged from around $3,500 to $25,000 for larger weddings and more expensive flowers. Owner Mason Heistand reports that almost any kind of flower is available for a fee. They’ve ordered some flowers from as far away as South America. Most of these florists have come to the industry through a family connection of some sort. Mason at Millefleuers began her career as a way to help her mom with a now 40-year business. Nancy, owner of Four Gals and a Florist, also worked with her mother in the now 30-year business. As time progressed, she earned her certificate in the field. Lori of Mountain Visions Florist built her establishment on land owned by her grandmother, where there were a few greenhouses for growing flowers. The property now houses not only the
aawmag.com
florists shop, but also a small greenhouse. Julie in Jefferson began growing flowers as a young girl, which she sold to the then florist of The Village Florist. When that florist took ill, Julie bought the shop. There’s one common thread with all of the florists — they love flowers. Aeriell came to the position of a florist via getting a degree in graphic design from Wilkes Community College. She began working in the floral department at Harris Teeter, and although she did complete her degree, she found a true calling in the floral industry. She was at Harris Teeter for 11 years before joining Bouquet Florist. There are many sources for flowers in the Cynthia Viola Photography area. There are flower wholesalers in the Charlotte area, and some of the florists also boast their own flower farms. Nancy says that brides “can get about 90% of what they want year around if they want to spend the money” for shipment. “Seasonal flowers” are bound to be “seasonal” somewhere, she adds. Lori plants flowers in her greenhouse early in the spring according to the wedding requests she has for several months down the road. There is typically seasonal colors in demand: iris and tulips for the spring; red roses and sunflowers in the summer; mums and bright oranges for fall; reds and greenery for winter. Although there has been a trend to preserve bridal bouquets and other flowers from the wedding, none of these florists recommend it. Mason says that “the flowers are prepared for that special day, and last about three to four days.” Some brides can hang their flowers upside down in a cool/dark place, but it may not be successful. All of the florists indicated that there are companies that specialize in this, as well as creating a pictorial design or even a paperweight. Couples are
likely able to search around social media or the internet for professionals to help them with ideas on how to preserve the flowers from their special day. Many brides often come to a florist with preconceived ideas regarding exactly which flowers they want, that they may have picked up from social media or other places online. But Aeriell recommends “working with a color palate in mind rather than with specific flowers.” A neutral color palate is very popular at this time, but she personally prefers working with a bolder color palate. Advanced planning is definitely key for the larger weddings. About one year of advanced notice will make the wedding go smoother and ensure that the desired flowers and/or arrangements can be obtained. The normal time for arranging an elopement is three weeks, according to the local florists. “Early planning is the most important part of wedding flowers,” Julie says. “Securing that date will allow the florist to be better equipped to discuss price once it can be established which flowers might be available.” Because most of these florists work out of a standard shop that offers floral services for many occasions, delivery capability comes with the job, even to the point of renting a large U-Haul on occasion. Regardless, finding a wedding florist in the mountains offers a mountain of available options in any season.

Wedding Based on The Time of Day You said yes! You have the ring
on your finger, you’ve set the date, you’re at the starting line and the gun is about to go off — ready set go! So much to do — your dress, venue, caterers, florists, photographers and the list goes on. One of the first things to do is get a timeline set up. You can find so many wedding helps online to get yourself organized. You will probably find that the journey to matrimonial bliss can be fraught with lots of stress and anxiety so it is super important that you also plan for your emotional and mental health. I suggest hiring the professionals to help you navigate these tricky waters. A good wedding planner can help alleviate some of the stress. If your budget is tight you can even hire a day-of planner. Leave it to the hair and makeup professionals to create your most beautiful you. Remember all eyes are on you so if you have to skimp, do it on the servings of champagne not on how you look. If you are really good at DIY, make sure you use good products with staying power. If a friend is doing it, ditto and please, please practice your look first — no day-of surprises. The focus on your big day will be you and you want to be beautiful, gorgeous, awesome, unforgettable and all the other adjectives that make your dreams come true on your day. Remember, long after the ceremony and celebration is over you will have captured those precious moments in pictures that you’ll be able to share throughout the years. Whether you want your look to be romantic, classic, glamorous or sophisticated, it is important to consider how lighting and the time of day will impact makeup intensity and color choices on your chosen look. The professionals know these little secrets to making you look amazing. The following tips are for you in case you’re not hiring one. I have classified brides into four cate24 | All About Weddings 2022
gories: morning, mid-day, late afternoon and evening. Morning bride: morning light is soft so your makeup should match the softness and coolness of the morning. A great light for those wanting a very natural look. • Foundation: Use very little, it can be reflective and dewy, use very light dusting of powder. • Eyeshadow: No bold colors, warmer soft shades that complement eye color, less is more. • Eyeliner: Define eyes in the lash line, not too dark, heavy or thick, avoid harsh black. • Lips: Soft and natural, not too bold. Remember, everything photographs darker than it appears to the eye because of the soft light so choose softer shades. Midday bride: Midday sun can cast shadows on your face and is the harshest light for photographs. • Foundation: Wear as little foundation as possible because it will be most visible and matte, no dewiness or shine. Use lightweight foundation and powder. Also matte blush, cream works great but not on oily skin. • Eyeshadow: Nothing dark or your eyes may look like dark hollows. Open the eyes with a slight shimmer. Highlight (not frost). This will prevent the dark hollow effect. • Eyeliner: Line as close to the lash line as possible. Long lashes help define your eyes without heavy liner. False lashes work well here. • Lips: Soft colors. Remember, this is the harshest light and every makeup line will show so blend, blend, blend! Late afternoon bride: This golden light is very forgiving and the most beautiful to be photographed in. You have more color choices and can go more dramatic.
• Foundation: You can use a little more to cover and conceal and still look natural. Always use powder because matte photographs better than shine, which can look greasy. Shimmer in the blush will give you a beautiful glow. • Eyeliner and eyeshadow: Can be bolder so go ahead and apply those dramatic shades. Shimmer (not frost) in shadow is beautiful but always make your mid-tone and/or contour shade matte. Never use shimmer over the entire eye as it will look super shiny in your photographs. • Lips: Go ahead girl and work those rich colors. Remember, photo flashes wash you out so make sure you have enough color and definition. Evening bride: This is great for the glam queens. More equals more, you can wear more to cover and you get more color choices. Everything should be more defined from lips to eyes to cheekbones. Bronzer will give you a glow and sculpting will add dimension so the flashing camera will not wash you out. Smoky eyes oh my, my, my — and oh yes, most definitely fabulous false lashes are a must for evening brides. Click, click, click, smile — beautiful! LIVING WELL
10 Quick Ways to
CALM DOWN
There are some things a brideto-be should resist; namely, the urge to fight or run. Yet, fighting and fleeing are what the body is triggered to do when under stress. It’s called a stress response. Face it, planning and conducting a wedding is stressful. Weddings signal a major life change. This happens while spending lots of money, dealing with loads of expectations and figuring out all those tedious details. On top of that, you are expected to be the happiest you have ever been. Talk about pressure. Fortunately, there is a way to counter the stress response with a relaxation response. Here are 10 proven ways to calm your mind and body in a matter of minutes. 1. Walk it off. A 10-minute walk can clear your head and boost the feel-good hormones. It’s even more effective if you walk in a park, along a beach or some other lovely place. As your attention shifts to the beauty around you, you’ll be distracted from the stressful situation and begin to relax. 2. Visualize. If you can’t get away to a beautiful place, think about a beautiful place. The National Institutes of Health recognizes the power of “guided imagery” to elicit a relaxation response. Simply make yourself comfortable, close your 26 | All About Weddings 2022
eyes, slow your breathing and visualize a pleasant scene — such as your honeymoon, walking barefoot along the beach, holding hands with your spouse and listening to the ocean waves. 3. Breathe deeply. Breathing exercises — or even just taking a few deep breaths — can help reduce tension and relieve stress. Shallow breathing triggers stress. Deep cleansing breaths calm you. 4. Groove to some tunes. You don’t have to be picky. Any music that you love will flood your brain with feel-good neurochemicals like dopamine. 5. Laugh. Laughter, like breathing, enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air. This increases the endorphins that are released by your brain. It first activates your stress response and then deactivates it, creating a kind of rollercoaster that leads to a feeling of relaxation. 6. Book a date with a friend. Having fun with your best friend, talking, walking and laughing together can keep things in perspective and bring down your anxiety. 7. Have a cuppa. Some teas have a long history of calming both mind and body. A warm cup of chamomile, lemon balm, passionflower, lavender or valerian root tea can help you unwind. 8. Munch on magnesium. Magne-
sium plays an important role in regulating neurotransmitters, which send relaxing messages throughout the brain and body. Pop some pumpkin seeds, eat half an avocado or a piece of dark chocolate — at least 90% cacao. These are all high in magnesium. 9. Tighten up and relax. To quickly transform from feeling up-tight into being chilled out, find a place to lie down on your back. Start with your toes. Tighten your foot muscles as much as you can, then relax them. Work your way up the body, tightening and relaxing each muscle – the calves, the thigh, the glutes, the abdominal muscles, the hands, the arms, the shoulder, the face. Stay in repose for a few minutes, taking deep cleansing breaths. Saving the best for last, enlist your beloved for the following: 10. Hug and pucker. Kissing and hugging relieves stress by helping your brain to release endorphins. This is, by far, one of the sweetest ways to trigger the relaxation response. In the stressful days ahead, use it liberally. bonnie church Certified Life and Wellness Coach Author/columnist, motivational speaker Certified Trainer for TLS Weight Loss Solution

YOUNG AT HEART
THE CHANGE GAME You’re getting married. Congratulations! If you are a woman in an opposite-sex relationship, and if it hasn’t happened already, one or more individuals will ask, “Are you planning to change your name?” When Roger and I were planning our wedding – 11 years ago – I recall being asked this question. I didn’t have a professional identity tied to my maiden name nor was I particularly attached to it, so I took Roger’s name. However, I must admit that while I was somewhat aware of the history of this custom, I gave little consideration to the patriarchal traditions associated with it. The practice of a woman taking her husband’s name at marriage dates back to 11th century Norman England and the law of coverture, under which a woman’s identity was erased upon marriage. A married woman could not own property, enter into contracts, and had no legal
28 | All About Weddings 2022
rights. While such laws seem absurd today, it wasn’t until the 1970s that a married woman in this country could get a driver’s license and/or passport or register to vote using her maiden name – in essence, forcing a woman to take her husband’s name. While there are no current laws that require a woman to change her name, the majority choose to do so. According to recent Google consumer surveys reported in the New York Times, around 70% of heterosexual women in the United States elect to take their husband’s name after marriage. Whereas, only around 3% of men take their wife’s name.
Weighing the Options There are reasons why a woman may want to change her name and reasons why she may not. For example, a woman may want to
change her name because: • The tradition is important to her. • She sees it as a symbol of commitment and/or a new beginning. • She wants to share a surname with possible future children. • She doesn’t like her maiden name. • She likes her future spouse’s name. And, she may want to keep her maiden name because: • She does not agree with the above-mentioned patriarchal traditions. • She sees it as an inherent part of her identify and/or is established professionally under her maiden name. • She likes her maiden name. • She changed her name after a previous marriage and doesn’t want to change it again. • She doesn’t feel connected to her future spouse’s surname and/or doesn’t care for it. And, also, have you considered, what aawmag.com
if your husband’s surname is the same or pronounced the same as your first name – for example, Taylor Taylor or Leigh Lee? What if your initials will spell something unfortunate – like SOS or, well, use your imagination. What if his name rhymes with your first name – such as, Mary Harry or Jane Payne? This was a gag in the 1998 movie “The Wedding Singer” – the heroine’s married name would have been Julia Gulia – and it struck me as both amusing and cringe-worthy. That being said, if Roger’s last name had been Feather, making my married name, Heather Feather that would have been amazing! Heather Weather or Heather Leather, less so. Joking aside and apologies to anyone with a rhyming married name that they love, my point is that you have options! As previously noted, you can keep your maiden name, or your spouse can take your name. Some couples choose to hyphenate both surnames; others choose a new, unique name that is meaningful to them. These options are becoming more popular now that all couples can marry, and as some women (and men) question why we continue to practice a custom that some see as outdated and sexist. I can only speak for myself, and I don’t regret taking Roger’s name nor do I feel that my identity was erased; however, I must acknowledge that changing my name was a lot of work. Ultimately, deciding to change your name is a personal decision – one informed by your history, culture and beliefs – so, talk with your future spouse, consider the options and do what’s right for the two of you!
If you have decided to change your name, expect to spend around 15 hours researching how to do so, according to Brides magazine (brides.com). While brides-to-be can easily find a checklist online to help guide them through the process, these are some of the things you’ll need to update once you have copies — yes, plural — of your official marriage certificate: • Social Security card • Passport • Driver’s license and other IDs • Tax information • Voter registration • Bank, credit card and investment accounts • Insurance policies • Titles and other legal documents • Utilities and other recurring payments • Direct deposits • Professional email account(s) • Social media accounts
If you are choosing another option, the process varies from state-tostate, so make sure to research what’s required.

logan & graham
June 18, 2021 Private Family Farm | Newland, NC For their eclectic boho-themed summer wedding, Logan and Graham wanted a free-spirited, stress-free environment filled with good music and family. The two chose pieces, items, furniture, blankets and other decor that were important to them or from those around them — such as church pews from a local church. Their ceremony took place alongside the Toe River followed by an outdoor reception with a bonfire under the night sky. P h oto s by M i c a e l a R a m s e y P h oto g r a p h y

Rhapsody of Love by H o l l i e E u dy
Logan and Graham shared a clear vision for their wedding: they wanted “good music, comfort food, and lots and lots of lights strung from trees.” They were not interested in tradition. They wanted their wedding to be “us,” and with the help of family and some fabulous venues they were able to pull off just that. In a gorgeous explosion of colors, flowers and unique details such as what Logan described as “worn and weathered” turquoise screen doors found in St. Augustine, Fla., the July 5, 2021, celebration of Logan and Graham’s vintage-boho wedding took place. With neither side determined as bride or groom, the couple’s families sat together during the service in a collection of mismatched chairs, couches and benches. Friends were surrounding them seated on church pews on loan from a local church. In this way, guests were reminded from the start “we’re in this together,” Logan says. The joining of these two families, however, began much earlier. As Logan explains, “There has never been a time that our families weren’t connected.” Beginning with their grandfathers’ lifelong friendship, Logan and Graham’s families have overlapped for more than half a century. Both born in Avery County and raised in Christian homes, Logan and Graham were taught to “love and respect others and that kindness always matters.” Both families operate their own businesses that are being passed on to their sons. And, Logan has followed in her mother’s footsteps to become an elementary school teacher. As Logan describes, “Graham and I are very fortunate to have come from a small town where community equals family.” Reaching out to extended family for help with wedding plans, Logan met with various members of both sides and in one planning session was able to create the vision for her wedding. “The planning process was so much fun. My family knows me so well — everyone brought different ideas to the table that they knew I would love. It was a collective planning process. So many brilliant minds come together, sharing, planning and creating off of each other’s ideas and opinions. My mom and aunt are masterminds with design and owners of “Junk Drunk.” Almost everything in our wedding was harvested from a yard sale or thrift store,” Logan says. Continued on next page All About Weddings 2022 | 31
From here, the nontraditional, vintage boho theme blossomed. Instead of the current trend to choose a fancy wedding venue for the ceremony, Logan and Graham knew without hesitation the place for their day. “We were married on the creek bank of Graham’s family farm in front of my grandparents’ house. It was the perfect place for our divine union,” Logan says. Each bridesmaid wore a different color of her choice, ranging from dark olive, rust, dusty mauve, sage and blue. Likewise, each also chose a different style for her dress from the website, Baltic Born. Rather than flowers, they carried tambourines that were decorated in various strands of macrame and ribbon. This color pattern was replicated throughout the ceremony and the reception with the cake also following this intricate style. Logan sent her baker — Cakes by Amy — a picture for inspiration, and was given a one-of-a-kind cake that incorporated the wedding colors. This suited the family and theme perfectly as Logan describes that no event is complete without an “Amy cake.” The wedding dress came as a surprise for the bride. She explains, “I did not choose my dress, my dress chose me.” Her original plan was a flowy, boho-type dress with lace and no sparkles. The dress she wore “didn’t have an inch of lace and was beaded with sparkly beads,” Logan says. She added that she knew immediately that the dress was the one. For shoes, she chose turquoise Roan sandals which were “relaxed and comfortable.” The music chosen for the day followed this same unique pattern of old and new, classic and country. Logan explains, “I love old rock and Graham loves country music. We wanted to incorporate a mix of both and our DJ, Cody Laws, did just that.” Logan’s walk down the aisle included Yoke Lure’s “Truly, Madly, Deeply,” and the couple walked out to Fleetwood Mac’s “You Make Loving Fun.” The couple’s first dance was to “When I Say I Do” by Matthew West. The couple chose not to feature a father-daughter/mother-son dance in order to keep the “whole wedding happy and joyful.” Logan says, “I did not want to have a father/daughter dance because I knew it would make me cry and I did not want to cry on my wedding day.” For food, guests enjoyed hot dogs, coleslaw, baked beans, kettle chips and various drinks in glass bottles in an effort to achieve the “laid-back family cookout vibe” the couple worked to establish.
32 | All About Weddings 2022
One of Logan’s favorite moments of the day was spent just before the ceremony with her dad. “After my dad drove me in, he and I stood behind the turquoise folding screens where no one could see us. He said ‘Look, sis,’ and pointed to all we had done. We took that moment to look at the reception area and the wedding area to see the beauty of it all coming together. I paused behind the old screen with my sweet daddy in the middle of my biggest and greatest dream and felt so much gratitude and love.” Of the colors, flowers, tambourines and vintage style cake, Logan says she will most remember “the vibe of the night was just as I wanted it to be — fun, family, friends, calm and magical. That’s exactly what I got!” She will also hold on to that drive with her dad in his old red Chevrolet truck “the rumble of the motor, crunching the gravel, knowing where we were headed and wanting my dad to drive faster, but also wanting him to slow down so that I could stay in that moment with him just a little longer, just a little longer.” Graham says he will vividly remember “seeing my bride walk down the aisle and knowing that our forever was finally here and wanting so desperately for it to begin.” It was a beginning that had been in the making for half a century when the couple’s grandfathers set up camp on either side of the creek, when their parents rode to school together and when Logan and Graham played team sports with each other’s siblings. It was a vintage-boho rhapsody of love, the wedding of Logan and Graham. As the bride describes, “We have always known each other — being together just felt right.” aawmag.com

Adventures by S o p h i a Lyo n s
Bringing together friends, family and their talents, Sarah and Andrew’s early-fall wedding
featured food, florals and music from their communities highlighting local flavors and themes. They met at church in Sylva, NC. Although they attended Western Carolina University at different times, they ended up having mutual friends and kept bumping into each other, going hiking and backpacking with different groups of friends. In January 2020, Sarah and Andrew went to Snowshoe, W.Va., with a group of other friends and they realized then “the rest was history,” Sarah says. While they were dating, Sarah moved to West Jefferson — she recommends Hole Lotta Donuts and Bobby D’s, a pizza restaurant, in the area — and they dated long distance for a year before moving close to Asheville. They still go backpacking and hiking together, in addition to playing soccer. They got engaged on Sept. 12, 2020. They’d planned to go backpacking with another couple, but they kept waffling on whether to go due to rain. They ended up going to the other couple’s house in Greenville where they went on a hike early on a rainy Saturday morning. At a waterfall, about two miles into the trail, Andrew proposed on the rock in front of the waterfall. Sarah said the timing was “a total surprise,” but he’d planned to go to the other couple’s house all along. The most stressful aspect of the planning, according to Sarah, was a comprehensive “day-of timeline” to include vendors arriving at the correct times, friends and family arriving from out of town, scheduling photos and time to just relax. But, the couple already knew folks who worked in the wedding industry, and the experience was helpful and made it more personal to have people they already loved and trusted involved. Sarah enjoys planning parties and events, and they had a whole year to plan the wedding; she said they’d take a bit less time, though, if they could do it again. To plan the wedding, Sarah and Andrew worked with a day-of planner, but not someone during the planning process leading up to the day. Quite a few friends’ talents were featured on their special day: their cake was baked Continued on next page All About Weddings 2022 | 49
by a friend who had previously baked wedding cakes, and the friend agreed to bake theirs, although she wasn’t currently selling them. One of Andrew’s friends, who’s a professional musician, put together a group of other musicians to make up the band for the day. The flowers came from one of her mom’s best friends from Alabama, where Sarah grew up; she drove up from Alabama to be part of the wedding. Sarah’s mom was also instrumental in helping arrange tables and keep the day going; she even made a memory table with pictures and candles of Sarah and Andrew’s family members who had passed on. They chose Sept. 25 as their date, knowing in the High Country the landscape would still be lush and green, but not hot and humid for their outdoor wedding. They toured several venues in the West Jefferson area, but landed on Appalachian View after hitting it off with the owner, it being more budget-friendly than some of the more expensive venues closer to Asheville. The venue was decorated in cabernet, rose gold and dusty rose with an emphasis on textural contrast — one bridesmaid even wore a rose gold-sequined dress. The two looked for different textures to emphasize the variety, even considering Pinterest boards full of prints before settling on a color palette. The mountain theme was subtle, but present, featuring mountain decor, a mountain cake topper and photos of the couple backpacking and hiking. A relative even gave them a portrait of them and their dogs drawn on top of a mountain as a gift. Their late-afternoon ceremony featured a piece of Sarah’s mom’s dress fashioned into a ribbon for her bouquet and the pillow for the ring bearer. They’d taken many of their photos in advance, so their reception began with a cocktail hour and lawn games before serving fried green tomato chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetables and mac and cheese. In addition to the cake, the couple also served miniature pies from Asheville Baked Pie Company, as Andrew isn’t a huge fan of cake. They’d even included a space for a pie flavor request on the RSVP to be sure all of the guests got a pie they’d like. The late-afternoon ceremony allowed the whole party and reception to conclude by 9 p.m. Their party favor was a trail mix bar, where guests could mix up their own blend, to go in bags labeled “happy trails.” Sarah also mentioned it functioned as an affordable snack bar as well. Their first dance was to “Stay with You” by John Legend, but the most special moment was at the end of the night. Andrew and Sarah made an exit, took their pictures, then while everyone else was leaving and milling around outside had a private “last dance,” just them and the band before heading out. “You get so carried away talking to other people,” Sarah said. “It brings you back together.” 50 | All About Weddings 2022

“PLAN A FEW SPECIAL MOMENTS for you and your spouse to soak in the day with some privacy! Have breakfast together, do a private last dance, sit at a sweetheart table for dinner (or) sneak away for sunset photos. This day flies by, so don’t forget to spend as much time as you can with the one you love!” - Sarah
“GIVE YOURSELF AT LEAST A YEAR, if not longer, to plan the event. Have a best friend to vent to. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Buy a wedding organizer to help you with to-do lists and coordination advice. Keeping it small kept it drama-free. Make sure you speak up for what you want, it’s your day. Don’t lose sight of what’s important. Have a good time.” - Judy
“DESIGN YOUR DAY based on what you — as a couple — want and not what you think is expected of you, what is considered traditional or trendy or based on the price tag. Also, spend as much of the day with your partner as you can! After all, it’s about your love and your story!” - Haley

“MY BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE would be to focus on each other. Yes, everyone is important and everyone wants to pull you aside and talk to you, but I tried my best to focus on my husband and remember that the day was about me and him. Honestly, I hardly remember who even showed up to the wedding, but I remember everything about him.” - Tenille “NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU PLAN, things will still happen on your wedding day, don’t stress on perfection but instead enjoy your wedding day with the people you love.” - Ana’e
TIPS
from our brides “FOCUS ON WHAT IS TRULY IMPORTANT - that is, you are going to be married regardless if something goes wrong. Do as many or use as many things that mean something to you. For instance, my family from Washington couldn’t be in attendance but sent a handmade quilt that we used by the bonfire at the night of the wedding. Don’t lose focus of what truly matters by getting caught up in trying to please everyone. Remember that it is your day!” - Logan
“A COUPLE PIECES OF ADVICE I would have is to not be in charge of anything on your wedding day. This is your time to take it all in and relax and enjoy getting ready with your best friends and family by your side and leave the rest to the professionals. There are going to be things that don't go perfectly, and that's totally fine, no one will care or notice so don't sweat the small stuff. And finally, it goes by so fast! That was my only complaint about the day, it just went by so fast. So do everything you can to take in those special moments, make it about you and your partner, and enjoy every minute of it.” - Taylor
“SCHEDULE SOME TIME with your spouse throughout your day! We had an early breakfast together, just the two of us, and it put my heart and mind at ease for the big and busy day that was ahead of us.” - Grace
“STAY CHILL AND MINIMIZE THE STRESS! Your day will be perfect no matter what happens. Go with the flow and embrace each and every moment. Those moments will become your unique and oh so special love story. Enlist friends and family to help you to avoid being overwhelmed and keep it as simple as possible. Have someone take photos of everything! The day will become a blur and you will want to relive every detail. Most of all, have fun and remember that your wedding day is about your love for each other and your friend’s and families’ love for both of you. Savor every second!” - Angela

Nick — who is not a fan of photos — and I planned it for April Fool’s Day, as we had camped in the mountains the year before on April Fool’s Day. I figured we could stay and camp in the mountains after! Some of my friends asked if I thought Nick would propose on the photo shoot, and I whole-heartedly said there was no way. He had convinced me our timeline was much different. It ended up snowing on April 1 and we moved the session to April 5, and Nick didn’t seem to mind at all that the plans changed, (another) reason in my mind that he wasn’t proposing. It didn’t seem like he was exactly jazzed for the day. The man knows how to keep it cool. We drove to the mountains and we spent almost two hours just having a blast during the session — hammocking, roasting marshmallows, cuddling in the tent and just being our goofy selves. Right at the end he popped the question. He got down on one knee and the rest is a blur.” Engagement Shoot Location “The Lump” on the Blue Ridge Parkway Photography Brianna Messer, Fern and Flower Photography 66 | All About Weddings 2022

We headed toward Atakule, which is a luxurious shopping tower in the center of downtown Ankara. At the top of the tower, there’s a garden that overlooks all of the picturesque views of the city. It was sunset, and Gülşah was very nervous because she was carrying the ring and waiting for the perfect moment to propose. As they sat together enjoying the scenic sites and people gathering in the garden, Gülşah started by sharing how she felt when she was leaving Turkey for the U.S. and how she was feeling in this moment with Vanessa. Gülşah then asked if Vanessa would share their life together and proposed. MOM’S WORLD
Fairytale Wedding ON A BUDGET Maybe you’ve had the same vision in your head since you were 5 years old of what your wedding dress would look like, the extensive floral decorations, all the guests dressed to the nines and catered food from the best fine dining chef. Along the same vein, I can still remember being a young girl and assuming that the only way you got married was if you had an available castle, floor-length poofy dress, white dress gloves to your elbows and awaiting carriage or limousine. When I decided to get married, I neither had nor wanted any of these things. I knew some people spent thousands of dollars on their engagement ring, venue, flowers, food and festivities surrounding their wedding. I was

about to start nursing school, was working full-time and was very much embedded in a community of women whose focus was not on the material aspects of life but rather on forging close relationships and honoring the sanctity of the natural birth process. Extravagance was really not in their vocabulary. Many of our friends were on budgets, in-school or recently out of college, and living paycheck to paycheck just as we were. So, when my husband and I decided to tie the knot officially, and do so cross-country in Virginia from where we were residing in Seattle, Washington, we had to be both practical and frugal. Thankfully, neither of us is terribly frivolous or picky. We knew we wanted an outdoor wedding, music, close friends
and family, and for everyone to have a good time. We didn’t want to break the bank or overstretch our budget or that of our parents. We started our wedding planning on a small budget with finding my husband’s suit and my dress. When the first venture into a Brooks Brothers store resulted in a condescending salesperson suggesting that none of their suits would be suitable to our budget, we marched across the street to another store with attentive staff who helped him find the perfect option. My dress was discovered at the first or second store I tried and was approximately $300 new at a Jessica McClintock store — all the rage while I was in high school. Despite being a tomboy at heart, I had always loved seeing the pictures of Gunne Sax and Jessica McClintock on the pages of magazines in the 1980s. Nowadays, I know that I could probably find an even less expensive option, given the number of wedding dresses I’ve seen online, at second-hand stores and Facebook marketplace for fractions of their usual cost. In addition, certainly traditional wedding garb is not necessarily everyone’s choice. My friend Mary wore clothes much like what one would see at a Renaissance Fair — beautiful in their simplicity and a style that was so completely her, I couldn’t imagine it any other way. Having found our wedding attire, our next personal purchases were our wedding bands that we got from the counter of JC Penney for approximately $100 each. While I have seen some amazing custom wedding bands, and

Friends, family, music and dancing were the highlights of that day, and putting those aspects at the center of our celebration and ceremony was meaningful and cost-effective for us. certainly love to support talented artistry, that was not realistic or important to us at that time. I truly believe that much of wedding budgeting is figuring out for you and your partner, what are negotiable and non-negotiable aspects for cost-reduction in order to stay within budget. For us, the ring was a symbol of our love and so it was important for it to be durable but not fancy. We are not particularly fancy folks. If you are, then the rings might be a larger portion of your budget but you might find ways to reduce cost for other aspects of the ceremony and festivities. The rest of planning involves food, flower arrangements and entertainment.
Friends and family often love to contribute in some way, as do church families. A dear friend of my husband’s family catered our rehearsal dinner, which we held at our house. Catering of the actual event was more costly but we were careful to select a caterer that was good but not exorbitant in price. Our flowers consisted of multiple buckets of fresh-cut flowers from a farm that were placed in vases and carried by myself and my bridesmaids. The venue had only a nominal fee for use of the grounds. We hired a local bluegrass band for $250 and, while the Virginia heat and humidity in mid-August was at its peak,
we danced and danced. The same friend, Mary, captured us at our reception in black and white photography with the joy of us doing what we loved to do. All told, I have never regretted not having a huge traditional picture-book wedding; rather, I figured out that the wedding I had was exactly the kind of book I wanted to open for the rest of my life. Friends, family, music and dancing were the highlights of that day, and putting those aspects at the center of our celebration and ceremony was meaningful and cost-effective for us. So if you are in the planning phases of your wedding and bemoaning the cost, think first of what parts of your wedding are the most important to you and work from there. With careful planning and researching your resources, your blessed day can most definitely be all you ever dreamed, even without the castle or the carriage. heather jordan, CNM, MSN Comments or questions? 828.737.7711, ext. 253 landh@localnet.com

MARRIAGE & FAMILY CORNER
Turn Toward One Another
Natural Craft Photography
One of the simplest and most powerful things we can
do is to turn toward our life partner for engagement. Research (e.g., by the Gottman Institute) shows that this simple habit is critical for happiness and health in long-term, committed relationships. In the early bloom of love, it can be hard to imagine a time when it might be difficult to remember and want to lovingly engage with our partner’s — and our own — dreams and strengths, as well as fears and vulnerabilities. It is easy to appreciate the shiny beauty of love in shared dreams and mutuality, and in coming together for a “happily ever after.” However, this ever 70 | All About Weddings 2022
after is a result not only of choosing a partner well but also of continually choosing to turn toward one another, even as we discover what we do not prefer about one another and as we change. Commitment to continually make this choice is simple and difficult, as well as foundational for health and happiness. It is important to practice coping, supporting and problem-solving together when the stakes seem low — such as about how to put the toilet paper on the holder, what to have for dinner and what to do on Saturday — so the foundation will already exist when dealing with sickness, hurt, loss and all else that ever after will bring. When the needs and wishes of one
person seem to be at odds with the needs and wishes of another, or when these needs and wishes are simply not understood, this tension can be difficult to navigate. Feeling misunderstood, unheard or hurt, or not understanding our partner may impede willingness to turn toward our partner with curiosity and hope. Ironically, the action of turning toward is necessary for greater understanding and often for uncovering new possibilities. This process can be messy and confusing. Fortunately, the commitment to use positive communication and self-calming skills benefits this process. John Gottman describes part of this process in “And Baby Makes Three: The Six-Step aawmag.com
Plan for Preserving Marital Intimacy and Rekindling Romance After Baby Arrives” (2007): “But we have to feel safe enough to pull our dreams out of the closet. When we wear them, our partner may glimpse how beautiful we are — fragile but shimmering. Then, with understanding, our partners may join us in being dream catchers, rather than dream shredders.” Glimpsing the “fragile but shimmering” beauty of our dreaming partner or self may increase understanding and motivate empathy for the dreamer’s fear and vulnerability, as well as energize and develop strengths and creativity for problem-solving. Turning toward this glimpse sharpens the view of beauty, thereby also promoting empathy and use of strengths. Intentionally turning toward our partner’s or our own dreams is an act of commitment and a loving process of clarification. Having had the privilege of working with hundreds of couples over the years, I have witnessed the transformation that is possible for individuals and relationships when commitment is given to wear our dreams and to glimpse our partner doing the same. The vulnerability of this process can bring anxiety or even terror. Usually, this transformation happens when a person intentionally makes this turn repeatedly across time in many small ways, instead of a romantic grand
gesture. That is commitment. Though the struggle to maintain commitment can be great, the benefits are far greater. Of course, the act of turning toward something includes the act of turning away from something else. When one thing comes into greater focus, another thing becomes more peripheral or moves out of view. Surely, we can only look or move in one direction at a time. According to T. E. Lawrence, “All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.” A wedding is a critical time to commit to this sort of open-eyed dreaming with our partner, to turn repeatedly to what matters most without sacrificing that to distractions, unresolved hurts or fears. Starting a new year is also a good time to build or renew this habit of remembering and of being curious about what is before us and within us. Simple, not easy, but worth it.
