Howdowerespondtotheemerging ideaofgender/sexfluidity,andmerging itwiththefunc�onalandprogramma�c constraintsofabathhouse?Howcan weusethequali�esofpicturesqueand ruintoamplifyandencourageawatery spaceofinclusionandconsidera�on?

Wewanttocreatealargevarietyof poolspaceswhich,havingdis�nct formalfeatures,wouldenablepeople tochoosewhichevertheyfindmost appropriatefromthemselves. Wetrytobreaktheideaofanideal throughthematerialityaswellby introducing“imperfect”featureslike weatheringandmoss,alongwith “welcome”featuresliketreesandplants inbetweengaps.Wedon’timpose anidealmindset,wejustenablethe possibilityofmanymindsetsweallow peopletoflowbetweenthesemindsets viathepools.

Theideaofamixed-incomeresiden�al isanestrangedconceptonitsown.It proposesthattwovastlydifferentgroups ofpeople,onoppositeendsofthesocial ladder,liveinextremelycloseproximity. Howisitpossibletobindthesegroups togethersuchthattheyworktogetherasa cohesivewhole?

Thisprojectproposesanembracingof thedifferencesofthesegroups,and incorpora�ngthesocietalstructureinto theprogramofthebuildingitself.An internalstreetiscarvedoutofanexis�ng grainsilo,andisconvertedintoaseries ofinterlockingpla�ormsthatallowpublic spacewherelow-incomeresidentscan takeadvantageof.Thebootstrapping effectofhavingaplacetoliveisamplified bythisspaceastheycanusetoeithersell goods,orpublicizetheirservicestoother residents.Higherincomeresidentshave incen�vetopurchasefromthem,dueto thecloseproximityandconvenince.

Thisbazaarmechanismisvisible punctua�ngthroughouttheapartments units,exposingthenatureofthesocial rela�onshipandremindingofhowbinding thepopula�onisasapeople.

Blocksthatareoccupiedbyvarious grassrootsorganiza�onsandcreate itsownresources;andaseach organiza�onmayfocusonmore specializedresources,aninfrastructure iscalledfortoequalizeandmoreevenly distributethemamongsteachother.

Thistransportinfrastructureconsists ofaseriesofnodes,placedabove theintersec�onsofroads,thatare connectedviaaseriesofwalls. Thenodesgeneratecommonizable resourcessuchaselectricityor urbangreenery,aswellasdistributes resourcesbetweenpreviously commonizedcityblocksviaamoving unitsystemhungbesidethewall.The spaceswithinthewallsthemselvesform ameansoftransportofpeople,aswell asprovidesanextensionofcommon spacesofthecityblocks.

Designofbridgesandnodes,andall imagesfeaturedherewerecreatedby theapplicant.

Architecturecano�enseem imprac�cal,anditmayo�enbedifficult toseehowitmightbeimplemented intoabuiltstructure.Indeed,paper architecturereliesheavilyonthe suspensionofdisbelief,theideathat certainaspectscouldbepushedaside forthesakeofdemonstra�ngasetof ideas,notunlikethepiecespresenteda fashionshow.

Therefore,thepurposeofthese exploits,whethertheybeprogramless orstructureless,istoexerciseavery specificpursuit;thatofuniqueness, originalitywithintheheightof sophis�ca�on,aswellastofulfill anylas�ngdesiresthatmaynot beotherwiseachievablethrough aconven�onalconstruc�on.The architectonicformstakeprecedent overcircula�on,program,orstructural efficiency;thus,itbestexistsonlyon paper.

Thearchitectureofthe�mesisthat ofacatwalk,wheretheexaggerated costumesparadeinanexclusiveview.

Buildingsaredesignedforpeople.As intellectuallyinteres�ngitmaybeto playwithcomplexgeometry,itisour experienceinthesedesignedspaces thatgivesthemostmeaning.

Architectureexistspassively, enablingtheseeventsbutdonot, andcannot,taketheirplace.As buildingsaredesigned,theybecome thestructureofhumanac�vity;they givepeoplefreedomofac�vity.Thus, architecture,initsmostidealstate,is invisible.

Theobjec�vewastodesigna residen�alunitwithana�ached officespace.Iproposedtotheteam thatacleardividebetweenthetwo differingspacesisessen�al.The finaldesignsimplysplitstheplan intotwodis�nctmassesconnected byabridge.Myrolewastodesign thefloorplansfirstbyhandandlater electronicallyinRevit,aswellas crea�ngdifferentpossiblefurniture layouts.Theteamsketcheditera�ons ofthefacades,andensuredthe buildingstoodsolidlyandadhered tothelocalaesthe�c.Together,we integratedthealterna�ngbalconies aswellasthecommongroundfloor planintothedesign.
